1 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2007-10-04

I am extremely disappointed in amazon and this book. You guys delivered it over a month late.I'm not paying for amazon prime so I can receive much needed books over a month late. I had to go to my College bookstore and pay $120. You wanna know the worst part? They don't accept devolutions. So I'm extremely disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Good.......2007-09-12

This book is very informative and it tries to explain so that there is not much confusion after looking it over.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful art.......2007-08-23

Loved this book for my Art class. I didn't think I would like the class, fell in love with art, and even kept the book afterwards instead of selling it.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive.......2007-02-16

I would recommend this to anyone who wants to better themselves in the region of art history knowledge and the ability to evaluate art's content as well. It was well worth buying and compliments any classes orientated towards the subject...maybe would even overshadow the required text.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting pictures.......2006-12-07

I purchased this book for my Art History class. Very interesting pictures along with non-boring texts. I really like the accompanied CD as it has all pictures from this text as well as other version of Gardner's art history books. Pictures are crystal clear. Although I finished that class long ago in 2002 and sold the book for school's book store with attractive price, I still have a copy of that CD and often reviewed whenever I saw some interesting stories of art history (such as female goddess from Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code). All pictures are under flash cards section. Besides a good text book, it should be kept as a reference.

Book Description

Drawing has recently experienced a renewal of importance in the art world; in fact, it has rarely been as widely represented in the biennials, art fairs, and exhibitions as it is now. Similar in concept, scope and structure to Phaidon's successful volume Vitamin P, Vitamin D presents, in A to Z order, the work of 109 artists who have emerged internationally since 1990 using the medium of drawing. Whether representational or abstract, small or large in scale, using only one line or rich in colors and pattern, drawings have a highly descriptive and meticulously detailed quality that is being explored by an increasing number of contemporary artists. Extending beyond the traditional image associated with this medium, Vitamin D hopes to illustrate the complexity, variety, and relevance of the practice of drawing today.

1 out of 5 stars Emperor's New Clothes.......2007-09-25

Anyone who would call this art is either lacking an objective sensibility or has some measure of vested interest in the sales of this book. The "drawings" (lol) in this book are fine examples of why mainstream Americans no longer care about the fine arts.

One reviewer actually used the word "refreshing" in describing the contents. Are you kidding me? Refreshing, perhaps, if I had only been exposed to blank pages my entire life.

This is not art. This is the Emperor's New Clothes.

5 out of 5 stars On reproductions.......2007-06-07

Vitamin D is an outstanding publication of drawings from contemporary artists which shows great depth in both subjectivity and theme, the one overwhelming issue seems to be the quality of the reproductions within. Context gives us the reason for this.. in that these are works by CONTEMPORARY artists and as such have not been digitized as throughly as say the often if not OVER reproduced imagery of Leonardo or Michelangelo, so yes some of the reproductions are less stunning however they are more than adequate and what is more important, they are reproduced well enough to spark interest in seeing the original. Artwork can never truly be reproduced, you must experience the original to truly appreciate the pieces. However Vitamin D does what it was designed to, as did it's predecessor Vitamin P, giving a contemporary overview of works and the artists who create them which have yet to be studied. These books are history in the making and that alone gives them more merit than most art publications. This series is more than worth owning and will prove to be volumes you will return to again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-04-03

If you are interested in a wide range of edgy drawings..this book is terrific. It is inspiring, informative and current...not a "how-to" but a survey of all the wonderful and strange drawings being done today.

5 out of 5 stars Collectable.......2007-02-04

Vitamin D, is complete inside and out. The binding is terrific, the type, the torn paper edges, the layout, everything that went into designing this book was well thought out. Its not only fabulous, but a pleasure to look through. The artists chosen are all exceptionally talented, and each with a unique edge. Nevertheless, all work presented will be a definite point of reference for many many years to come, including the work by my own mentor, and teacher.

5 out of 5 stars If you have any sort of an interest in art..........2006-11-12

Then you will absolutely fall in love with this book. This book is full of images from a wide range of media and artists. The short bios on the artists are short but informative and don't take up much space (more room for pictures). If you're something of an artist yourself then you can certainly pull lots of ideas from this book. I definitely am glad I bought this book.

    Book Description

Now in its Third Edition, Introduction to Animal Science: Global, Biological, Social and Industry Perspectives continues to present the most complete, up-to-date coverage of on nutrition, digestion, feeds, genetics, reproduction, disease, and animal behavior. Species-focused chapters include the major species (horse, dair cattle, beef cattle, sheep, goat, poultry, and swine) as well as the minor species (aquaculture, pets/companion animals, the lamoids, and rabbits). In addition, however, the study of modern Animal Science also requires a comprehensive, non-traditional approach that effectively introduces the discipline as an ever-changing and integral part of every aspect of human existence. For this reason, author W. Stephen Damron not only presents thorough coverage of the major species and their respective concerns - he also challenges the reader to consider the many pressing interests relevant to Animal Science as it influences and is influenced by society today. Four-Part Organization easily accommodates the three major approaches of animal science: biological, industry or species. A Global perspective discusses the impact of animals on humans throughout the world. Introduces readers to types of agriculture found around the world and the influences other countries have on U.S. animal industries. Introduces readers to concerns affecting industry such as animal welfare, animal rights, food safety, ethical resource allocation, and sustainability of agriculture. Includes highly publicized issues such as mad cow disease and bioterrorism. Anyone interested in or involved in animal science.

    Book Description

Hervé This (pronounced "Teess") is an internationally renowned chemist, a popular French television personality, a bestselling cookbook author, a longtime collaborator with the famed French chef Pierre Gagnaire, and the only person to hold a doctorate in molecular gastronomy, a cutting-edge field he pioneered. Bringing the instruments and experimental techniques of the laboratory into the kitchen, This uses recent research in the chemistry, physics, and biology of food to challenge traditional ideas about cooking and eating. What he discovers will entertain, instruct, and intrigue cooks, gourmets, and scientists alike.

Molecular Gastronomy, This's first work to appear in English, is filled with practical tips, provocative suggestions, and penetrating insights. This begins by reexamining and debunking a variety of time-honored rules and dictums about cooking and presents new and improved ways of preparing a variety of dishes from quiches and quenelles to steak and hard-boiled eggs. He goes on to discuss the physiology of flavor and explores how the brain perceives tastes, how chewing affects food, and how the tongue reacts to various stimuli. Examining the molecular properties of bread, ham, foie gras, and champagne, the book analyzes what happens as they are baked, cured, cooked, and chilled.

Looking to the future, This imagines new cooking methods and proposes novel dishes. A chocolate mousse without eggs? A flourless chocolate cake baked in the microwave? Molecular Gastronomy explains how to make them. This also shows us how to cook perfect French fries, why a soufflé rises and falls, how long to cool champagne, when to season a steak, the right way to cook pasta, how the shape of a wine glass affects the taste of wine, why chocolate turns white, and how salt modifies tastes.

4 out of 5 stars We're that much closer to Jetson style food pills.......2007-06-19

Herve This is a genius and should be respected simply for the fact that he approaches cuisine with something other than blind awe of traditions that regarded as fact but are little more than a step up from superstitions and old wives' tales. Already a bit on the dry academic side and then translated from French to English, it can occassionally be a difficult read, but the unique nature of the subject makes sure it says a fascinating read. The book is broken up into sections each a few pages long asking if and why a preconceived notion regarding food is true (Does the juices of meat really contract to the center when you cook it?, Does it matter if you slowly heat your stock or use hot water from the beginning?), the nature of flavor (how salt affects sweet and bitter flavors), just what goes on with the food before we eat it (What causes cheeses to taste the way they do tracing it all the way back to the diet of the cow), and theoretical ideas to make the culinary field better (Developing new cooking techniques involving technology such as artificial vacuums and electrical fields). While the book uses specific examples, it's easy to take This's basic technique and apply it to anything food related, which you could imagine is his goal, having founded the field sharing its name with the book.

    2 out of 5 stars good, but.......2007-05-20

good, but, not very complete, inaccurate and simplistic. if you have read harold mcgee, it is a bit simplistic, un-scientific, and extremely biased. good for the beginner or home cook. short stories (and lack of scientific guidelines) are good for those without the patience for "on food and cooking"...

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-05-11

I was hoping to find something along the lines of Harold McGee's "On Food and Cooking". If this is what you are looking for, look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Trick in the kitchen.......2007-03-20

This hardcover is divided in small paragraphs which are dealing with the different topics in kitchen science. The first section is dedicated to the tricks in cooking and is the one I like better. Then the author goes through the new discoveries about how do we perceive taste and flavour.
Good start to get in the argument of molecular gastronomy;)

4 out of 5 stars Good but overrated.......2007-03-09

This book is supposed to be the bible on molecular gastronomy. While the book is interesting, the book is bit lighter on some of the topics than I would have hoped. While I must admit that in comparison to the other books on the subject, this is probably the best out there (except for maybe the El Bulli book), I just keep feeling that this could have been more.

    Book Description

Perspective is easy; yet, surprisingly few artists know the simple rules that make it so. Now they can remedy that situation with this step-by-step book, the first devoted entirely to clarifying the laws of perspective. Using over 250 simple line drawings, the author leads the reader through every important concept. 256 illustrations.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Precision drawing basics........2007-01-09

This is a book that teaches precision drawing. It is easy to read in that the text seems like it is written for elementary school age, but at the same time it doesn't "talk down". It's just simple and direct. This would be an excellent book for a kid (age 10 or so) or an adult to learn about the basics of drawing - vanishing points, eye level, horizon line. At the end of each chapter is a "Remember" section which reviews the main points covered in the chapter and a "Problems" section which is a list of exercises to do to practice what was taught in the chapter. Another plus is that this book covers Perspective Downhill, Perspective Uphill, Reflections, and Mechanical Perspective which I have not come across elsewhere.

Although it does a great job in explaining what the basics are and has many very good illustrations, compared to other books it lacks in explaining the exact mechanics of what to do when you draw your own drawing (e.g. how to use your pencil to figure out angles and lengths).

Bottom line is that because of the simple explanations and the unique topics covered this, I want this book in my art book library. However, this is more of a supplemental book. If you're looking for only one book that will teach you to draw, it would be better to get a different book such as Perspective Without Pain by Philip W. Metzger or Drawing Sharp Focus Still Lifes by Robert Zappalorti.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful little book........2006-11-14

A wonderful understandable little book on the basics of perspective. It is not meant to be overly technical, rather it's goal seems to be to aide artists quickly through the most common perspective issues and then some.

5 out of 5 stars A promise that is fulfilled........2006-11-12

As a representational painter I find that a sound knowledge of perspective is of paramount importance and I cannot blame modernist art enough for the damage it has done to generations of painters by ignoring and teaching to ignore perspective .
Over the years I have collected an impressive number of books about perspective, from 15th century manuals to modern textbooks. All of them are fascinating but rather complex and tend to discourage the reader after a few chapters.
Norling's book, on the contrary, is beautifully simple without being superficial. It teaches the aspiring artist all the tricks with a simple language and without burdening him or her with exceedingly complicated rules and formulas. It is equally useful to the experienced artist that wants to refresh some difficult points.
An honest book that delivers all that it promises, that is how to make perspective easy.

    5 out of 5 stars Artist's review.......2006-11-10

I bought this book, because, as an artist, I was having trouble putting the right perspectives on my paintings. Perspectives have always seemed difficult to me, so I was looking forward to finding a text that would be able to educate me on this subject quickly and easily. This book fills the bill. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to get up to speed on perspectives.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!... It's my #2 choice in my Top 5 perspective books..........2006-11-08

Simple & effective! These drawings might look somewhat dated, but there's a consistent *simplicity* to the style & teaching here that really grew on me over time. Simplicity is the *main* reason I like it now. So many books get overly complicated or provide lots of information that may be good but not really necessary. This book keeps very much to the point. And it's surprisingly effective! Created in 1939- not many books can survive the test of time like this. Still, I wouldn't go so far as to say it's the only perspective book you'll ever need, and as much as I like this, I have other favorites too. My current Top 5 perspective books: Perspective Drawing Handbook; Perspective Made Easy; Perspective! for Comic Book Artists; Basic Perspective Drawing: A Visual Guide, 4th edition; and then Creative Perspective for Artists and Illustrators. 4 out of 5 stars Needs a good instructor to go along with it.......2006-05-09

An excellent reference, but it is an embarassment of riches, and as such it can't completely cover every area exhaustively. This would probably be extremely frustrating for a casual reader to absorb. I used this as a text book for a class with an extremely good instructor who backed up the material in the book very well. As such, the class and the book were a joy.

    1 out of 5 stars Hard.......2005-10-28

Even though the topics of this book are absolutely great and crucial for any CS student, I dislike the entire book !, its hard to follow the writer, i find it hard to keep with him !
too many complicated information with either Tiny explaination or more complicated explaination ,
its a very big book with many topics , i prefer reading seperate books with specific topics rather than this book,

    4 out of 5 stars Nice Book!.......2005-05-25

I just completed a college course using this textbook... the course was tough, but the book was very good and useful. This is one textbook I won't be selling any time soon!

The practice problems provided in the book were usually very good, and the programming problems distributed with it were fun and educational, including topics like Buffer Overflows, Memory Optimizations, and Debugging with GDB, among others.

There are *some* problems with this book, but it doesn't suffer from the devastating flaws that plague most computer science textbooks. Some sections lack thorough explanations and examples, and the writting is a bit unclear at times. Some solutions to the practice problems are vague and don't really provide much insight on how to solve the problems. Luckily, these flaws only creep up in a few places.

Compared to most technical textbooks, however, this one really shines. It's not quite perfect, so I think 4 stars is appropriate.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know as a programmer.......2005-03-25

What a splendid book! I wish I has gone to CMU and take this course. This book is written by CMU professors after teaching Computer Systems course for few years. This book covers broad spectrum of topics from Operating Systems, Compilers, Computer Architecture, Assembly Level Programming, Kernel internals, Linkers, etc from a programmer's perspective (as the title aptly says).

I am searching for words to describe the usefulness of this book. In my experience, I have had hard time learning some of the topics where Operating systems, Processor and Compilers intersect. For example, Linkers and Loaders, program disassembly using reverse-engineering, virtual memory in Kernel etc. After all the hard work, I found the right book which grinds all the famous books in different areas and gives the right juice for the real programmers to taste and digest.

    Those famous books are:
[1] Computer Organization and Design Second Edition : The Hardware/Software Interface by David A. Patterson, John L. Hennessy
[2] UNIX Internals: The New Frontiers by Uresh Vahalia
[3] Linux Kernel Development by Robert Love
[4] Linkers and Loaders by John R. Levine
[5] GNU Binutils (GAS, objdump, ar, nm etc) Documentation

Excellent job. I really appreciate the work and content of this book.

    Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

    Book Description

This combination rhetoric/reader helps readers develop strategies for critical reading, critical thinking, research, and writing that will help them argue clearly and convincingly. It teaches them to identify and develop arguments, to read and form reactions and opinions of their own, to analyze an audience, to seek common ground, and to use a wide, realistic range of techniques to write argument papers that express their individual views and original perspectives on modern issues. The Rhetoric portion includes clear explanations and examples of argument theory and reading and writing processes, research and documentation skills, and offers engaging, class-tested writing assignments and activities. The Reader portion includes 75 reading selections covering seven broad issue areas and 18 more focused areas, all of contemporary concern. Unique chapters discuss argument styles, Rogerian argument, and argument and literature. Material covered includes engaging with argument for reading and writing, understanding the nature of argument for reading and writing, writing a research paper that presents an argument and visual and oral argument. Readings cover a range of issues including those concerning families and relationships, education, crime and the treatment of criminals, race, culture and identity, freedom, war and issues concerning the future. For anyone interested in a clear presentation of argument theory applied to written, visual and oral forms.

1 out of 5 stars Perspectives on Argument.......2007-10-02

The basics of academic writing are fairly straightforward. We need clear reasoning, hence a clear explanation of the basics of logic and of fallacies. We need to explain to students how to select research materials, how to distinguish trade books from academically kosher texts, and so on. And we also need an efficient writing guide that addresses these issues. This is not such a text.
Firstly, the text gives thin and often confusing advice on logic. Where Wood discusses critical thinking and fallacies, the explanations are very short (just five pages of a 750 page text concern fallacies, for example) and there are no real- world examples of the fallacies discussed. As such, the relevance of basic logic to the art of critical reading is not really obvious to the novice. This is bizarre, given that many of the (non- academic) reading examples in the text(such as Rush Limbaugh on 'femi-Nazis') are basically wall to wall fallacious, and much of the right wing conservative nonsense in the text's reading section is simply not diagnosed as such. Further, Wood's explanations of basic logical concepts are inexplicably confused- she gets inductive and deductive logic quite the wrong way around (p.201)- an error that would get any critical thinking tutor fired. This paucity of clarity is evident in some truly shocking advice given the student: advice that rather rejects the whole principle of research and cogent argumentation in the name of some muddled epistemic relativism that holds that everyone has a unique perspective that deserves respect. In particular, she advises authors to not clearly articulate their arguments for a given proposition because "a stated warrant [premise] negates the rich and varied perceptions and responses of the audience by providing only the author's interpretation and articulation of the warrant" (p.139). This emphasis on such irrelevant issues as 'establishing common ground'and 'establishing the rhetorical situation' makes much of the text worse than useless in trying to teach what college writing entails and requires. In suggesting that the misreadings of the reader are more important than clearly articulating one's own argument, Wood is, quite frankly, talking rubbish.
The text does include some solid examples of argumentative writing (such as Martin Luther King Jr's "Letter from Birmingham Jail") but there is no real explanation as to why such texts are persuasive without being fallacious. Further, many of the better essays in the text are far more sophisticated than the body text, making the overall work feel quite unbalanced.

4 out of 5 stars Really nice book.......2007-07-31

I got this book for my life drawing class and I really like this book. It does not teach anatomy or proportion. It shows the classical way of doing figure drawing and how to do finish rendering. It's more traditional approach and really helpful. I have learned a lot from it.

5 out of 5 stars Good for drawing "live".......2006-07-17

Very usefull, very pleasant to read. I was expecting more explanations about the relationship between anatomy and the human pose, but it's more about how to look at the model to draw it well.

4 out of 5 stars Thank God for an excellent figurative painter!.......2006-03-04

Ryder's book is a delight to leaf through, looking at the excellent life drawings in red earth, done with the same accuracy and passion as the masters of the past.
He gives a very clear account of how to tackle the drawing in phases, until it is finished.
I would have rated the book a solid 5, were it not that in my opinion Ryder spends too little time giving advice on how to measure proportions, which are the basis of a successful life drawing or portrait. He is undoubtedly a masterful draftsman, but the less experienced artist reading his book would expect to be led step by step on such an important aspect of drawing from life.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent, but..........2005-11-05

The general consensus of the reviews I've read is that this is a fine book, but not for beginners. My take is somewhat different.

First of all, I think this is a fine book for a beginner if she or he is not (unlike most beginners it seems) indignant at the idea of having to have exercise patience and concentration.

Anthony Ryder is a fine draftsman and, to judge from this book, a fine teacher as well. He explains his method quite admirably. How others can think otherwise is a mystery to me. As far as I'm concerned, he does an excellent job of combining instruction in mechanical technique with broader insights into the process of drawing. While I have never met him, I find he comes across in this book as quite a likeable person.

I do, however, have a reservation. The author seems to have little understanding of, or at least does not convey, the limitations of the method he teaches.

For accurately conveying the appearance of still subjects in controlled lighting, I think this method is without better.

Many subjects, however, cannot be portrayed accurately using this method. You simply cannot make a good drawing of a living deer or chickadee, for instance, using this framework. Nor can you portray human subjects that are impractical for studio sessions, for instance a battle scene with many people (try paying just one model for 8 hours of posing) and in positions that no model can hold for very long or at all. All the work of A.R. that I have seen is either of inanimate objects or of human models in relatively leisurely poses, and his method reflects that.

Nonetheless, learning to draw accurately from still life is an essential skill for those who want to do realistic work, and this book is an excellent foundation. However, if you want to work with subjects other than lounging models and objects on table tops, you will need to go beyond it.

    5 out of 5 stars Figure Drawing.......2005-08-12

Mr. Ryder has compiled wonderful book for the figure drawing beginer that includes many types of drawings and drawing media, from pencil to charcoal to pastels. It is extremely well ilustrated with many great tips for the beginers. This is a book that I highly recomend for those just starting to those are already on their way.
