Customer Reviews:
Book has given me some ideas.......2007-03-30
The book is well illustrated and true to the topic. I thought a little too much time was spent on the dimensions of the illustrated work in how the book need to be adjusted for the size of the book and not any time spent explaining how the woodworkers of the time accomplished the work, Example how was a flute cut with the top end round and the bottom end flat. How are tongues added to a fluted column? There are no explanations of the wonderfully illustrated woodworking just where the work is located and how to measure the work.
A Great Book for Sure, Including Strong Support from Authors.......2007-01-22
"Federal Style Patterns 1780-1820" is the culmination of an astounding research project. The detailed drawings are based on design elements from homes built during the Federal Era in the New England region, and include detailed images of cornices, door and window casings, chair rails, baseboards and more.
All drawings are captured in a variety of formats on a CD-ROM that comes with the book, which is a helpful tool for modern day designers hoping to faithfully reproduce the elegance of Federal Style architecture.
For some time now, I have been fascinated with the Federal Style, so much so that I decided to decorate and furnish my new office as if it were a page from history, circa 1815. I was a bit confused how to adapt a door arch to my particular circumstance, so I e-mailed the authors of this book, MaryBeth Mudrick and Lawrence D. Smith, for advice. I was most pleased with the prompt and professional reply I received from them. Throughout the duration of my project, which stretched out for many months, MaryBeth and Lawrence provided invaluable guidance at many critical junctures, always with patience and a friendly touch. With my copy of their text close by at all times, these pros led me toward a Federal Style look that far exceeded my original expectations. Thomas Jefferson would have felt right at home!
Elegant, exhaustive and authoritative.......2005-09-13
Oh, this is an elegant book, with highly detailed drawings of every molding, mantels, doors, room designs, etc. that you can imagine, all in the beautiful American Federal Style. In this book, you can 'invade' historic homes and 'walk out' with measured detailed drawings of all of the best features -- without anyone catching you in the act.

Book Description
The Civil War era was a time of great tragedy and triumph, and for a diverse group of women it was a distinctive thread in their lives and their quilting. Quilters and historians alike will appreciate the timeless lessons shared through actual diary entries and 121 related quilt blocks featured in The Civil War Diary Quilt, from Rosemary Youngs, author of the innovative book, The Amish Circle Quilt.
This reference incorporates instructions, list of supplies, a photo gallery, and 121 quilt blocks inspired by actual diary entries from 10 women living during the Civil War. Readers meet a variety of women including Mary Austin Wallace through her stories about running a 160-acre farm in Michigan, while her husband is away at war; 17-year-old Emma Florence LeConte as she recounts the day the Union army set a path of destruction through Columbia, SC; and Rachel Young King Anderson who moved away from Tennessee with her husband and children to start a new life. In addition to the 121 blocks that make a full quilt, this must-have reference includes smaller projects that use the same blocks.
-Actual diary entries of 10 women living during the Civil War create a unique historical reference
-Includes 121 full-size quilt block patterns that can also be used to make smaller additional projects

Civil War Diary Quilt.......2007-08-17
This is a lovely book but not as good as i thought it would be. I have wanted it for over one year and now that I have it, realise I could live without it. The illustrations and overall appeal ie. colour, setout and feel are lacking. Not a really appealing book in my opinion. Overall it is a lack-lustre offering. Some good facts re: real life stories from the Civil War however.
NIce book.......2007-08-11
This is a great thick book of blocks that coincide with letters from the Civil War period. A group of us made quilts from this book. ITs a keeper.
History in the making.......2007-07-12
I really enjoyed the stories, just wish that there were more. Good book for quilter's who like to take patterns and recreate them in EQ6 or other software to print out hard copy patterns. You could trace and draw out patterns in the book and do English paper-piecing too.
Civil War History and 6" Quilt Blocks.......2007-07-03
This is an interesting quilt book and history book rolled into one. The blocks pictured are 6 inches square, with a CD of patterns available from the author to help you print or resize them. The diary stories reveal much about the day-to-day life of a diverse group of Civil-War era women. Becoming involved in Rosemary Youngs Yahoo group has added much to my enjoyment of the history portion, and helped me with the actual piecing of the quilt. Her previous book is Amish Circle, and her follow-up book (just published) is Love Letters. I own them all!The Amish Circle Quilt: 121 Quilt Block Patterns That Tell A StoryThe Civil War Love Letter Quilt
Civil War Diaries.......2007-06-02
If you enjoy history and quilts, this is an excellant book to combine both. Interesting reading and I'm anxious to start the quilt blocks. Pictures of the quilt blocks are very clear but do need to know the basics of quiltmaking to make the blocks as there are no instructions with the blocks.

Customer Reviews:
Best Resource Available!.......2006-11-13
Whether you sew doll clothes or Victorian costumes, this book is the best resource to have! It covers the entire Victorian era, describing the chosen costumes in great detail. It discusses the general shapes of each period, what undergarments were used, what fabrics were popular, what details to add, what accessories to use.
There is a wonderful section on handsewing, showing you how to use period sewing techniques, plus sewing specific to the Victorian period, such as piping. Another section shows you how to finish your seams -- French seams, flat felling, etc. The patterns are clear and easy to size up or down. The diagrams are excellent, clearly showing you each step.
I make oaak fashion dolls, and sew Victorian costume for myself, and I find myself opening this book at some point during every project!
A Rave Review.......2006-05-27
Sewing Victorian Doll Clothes is a wonderful source book for historical costumes with a wide range of workable patterns.
It is a wonderful reference for the doll collector who is interested in recreating historically correct clothes for china or bisque dolls. The range of styles in broad, and the instructions are clear even for the novice at sewing. Without question, this is one of the finest books on this subject that it is possible to find. It is worth every dollar spent.
Delightful and Helpful - a must for Heirloom sewing!.......2001-12-27
This is a wonderful book with many illustrations. There are extensive patterns, wonderful details, could go a little more in-depth with the patterns and have a little more variety of Victorian clothing. A wonderful book, it is a must for the heirloom sewing library!
This is the pattern book I have needed for years!.......2000-08-23
I have now tried most of the patterns in this wonderful book, and even with my limited sewing skills, I have been very pleased with my results. I have particularly enjoyed the tips for constructing clothes without patterns. The simple smock dress idea works well for my Ginnys, as well as for my composition baby dolls and small antique bisque dolls. I'm looking forward to learning to make hats and purses. I have a stack of old leather gloves just waiting to be made into the darling shoes pictured in the last chapter of the book.
The BEST book on sewing doll clothes on the market!.......1999-07-27
The book is a must-have for anyone wanting to sew reproduction clothing for dolls. This book includes wonderful color plates of the antique dolls chosen for the study. You can clearly see every detail of the wardrobe. There are many underwear items included : corsets, hoops, bustles, etc. There is a large detailed explaination of each dress, listed by the color plate. Then, there is a large section which not only tells you how to sew a duplicate of the original, but which includes much useful information about the period of time the dress represents. Finally, there is a wonderful bibliography and an excellent section on how to hand sew the items, carefully detailing descriptions of each stitch used.

Disappointing color reproductions.......2004-06-05
Anyone interested in good color and sharp outlines should definitely avoid this book! Reproductions are sometimes dull and outlines often fuzzy. Very disappointing. I returned it immediately.
Great sampling of Morris' work.......2003-07-03
I truly like this book! It is a 9.5" X 12.5" book in size, with 41 pages, 40 of which have full page with exception of 1" border designs. Only one pattern (Rose Pattern) is narrower. Copyright free designs for personal use, important! and very useful at the copy shop, because the printing is so good that one can extract and enlarge copies at will, this book will not let you down in that respect. Dover gives you wallpaper, tile, fabric & carpet patterns by photograph, very clear, as well as several tapestry designs photographed. Have already enlarged and traced the Cherwell design as well as the Acanthus leaves design for a future tapestry pattern. Perfect! Perfect! Perfect!
Patterns are: Angel With Scroll(painting),Rose Pattern(tile),Daisy Pattern(tile), Daisy design(for wallpaper),Trellis design(w), Marigold(w), Vine(w), Acanthus(w), Apple(w), Ceiling Paper designed for St. James' Palace, Wallpaper(same), Wild Tulip(w), Bruges design(w), Pink Rose(w), Honeysuckle(chintz), Bird & Anemone(chintz), Strawberry Thief(c), Wandle(c), Rye(c), Acanthus(velvet), Cherwell(velvet), Velvet broche, St. James design for silk, Kennet design(s), Cross Twigs(s), Tulip & Rose for tapestry, Anemone(tapestry), Bird&Vine(t), Peacock&Dragon(t), Dove&Rose(t), Lily(t), various carpet designs.

Customer Reviews:
Great patterns.......2006-08-23
A fabulous book for quilt history lovers. The stories behind these magnificent quilts and the patterns to make some as well. What more could you want! Instructions from the authors are easy to read and execute.
wonderful quilts, great instructions.......2006-03-22
this book would be worth buying for the photos of 19th century quilts alone--especially those of susan mccord. that the instructions are first rate, and full-sized patterns are included, makes it even more fantastic.
the only reason i do not give it five stars is the inclusion of instructions for so many variations of log cabin and other well documented and frequently presented designs. i would have been happier if the space had been used to present less common quilt designs. i love log cabin and many of its variations, but you can find instructions for them everywhere.
that being said, this book is still a great addition to any quilter's library.
Great new book.......2006-01-30
Having been a member of The Henry Ford for many years, I eagerly awaited this book. I was not disappointed. The photography was lovely, and the quilts chosen were beautiful, especially the section on Susan McCord's amazing quilts. I was lucky enough to see these quilts up close and although the majesty of her masterpieces is not as obvious in these photos, they do give one a great idea of how wonderful these quilts are. Many great chapters in this book including a textile timeline. Would highly recommend to anyone interested in quilt history or any fan of The Henry Ford.

Customer Reviews:
The Lack of an Index - moan and groan!!! .......2006-12-27
Ditto to the above review of this book! "Index, Index, Index!!!" I am a relative newbie to antique glass and started a few months ago trying to identify family pieces. Because of the volume, extensive research, pictures, etc... of this source, I bought it a couple of months ago. What a waste of time and money. This book ***only*** has an alphabetical listing of patterns in the Table of Contents - no index. As I am trying to ***indentify*** a glass pattern - do not know the pattern name, the Table of Contents is useless. I have to laborously search page by page (500+) in hopes of stumbling on a black and white pic or sketch of the pattern. Granted several other glass books only have alpha listings of patterns but they are smaller in volume making it a bit easier to thumb through them. Now Warman's Glass by Schroy does have an index which lists not only pattern names but catagories with sub-levels. Why couldn't this book have taken a little more effort and added an invaluable index?
Index, Index, Index!!!.......2006-12-13
I'm sorry to say this book makes me want to stick a fork in my eye every time I use it.
That's because mostly I need to identify an unfamiliar piece of glass, so I don't have a pattern name yet, and for some reason the authors chose to assume that anyone using this book would already know the pattern name of what they were looking up! Even the table of contents lacks any organization other than alphabetical pattern names.
But most of all, identification is made hair-pullingly difficult by the lack of even a rudimentary INDEX.
The authors have provided no way to look up patterns by characteristics such as 'star and circle,' or 'ribbed with lattice,' etc. The authors of books on marks have managed to come up with organization systems like this - so why is it so lacking in pattern identification books? This is not the only book without an index, even Mauzy's excellent book on Depression glass forces you to look at every pattern on every page when you're researching an unfamiliar piece.
But, what makes this book's lack of index particularly egregious is its enormous size and complexity. Having to look at mostly black and white line drawings of patterns on EVERY SINGLE page of this book's 498 (!) pages of patterns is so discouraging I have yet to actually id a piece. I keep just giving up, which makes this book a waste of money.
In fact, if you have a pattern name, you've already GOT identification, haven't you? All you really need to know is the price and what else is available in the pattern line, which YOU HAVE ALREADY IDENTIFIED YOURSELF!! The use of the word "Identification" in this book's title is an outrageous lie.
The only way to make this book valuable to the majority of collectors, who have not managed to memorize thousands of EAPG patterns, is to buy another better organized book of patterns and use this one for the exhaustive listing of all pieces produced or reproduced under each pattern name.
Obviously, the authors put a lot of hard work into this huge volume (which is the only reason this torture device still got two stars) but expecting anyone to access all that info without an index is ridiculous. This is a reference book after all, and reference books are meant to be WELL organized.
If the authors had done more than just part of the job, and included at least an index and/or at least one other organization method than alphabetical pattern names, this could have been THE definitive guide to EAPG. What a disappointment.
This was my first book on EAPG so I don't have any alternative suggestions, but perhaps someone else out there does?

This book helped in the identification and listing the ages of different flatware I have found at yard sales, flea markets and thrift stores. I have shared it with several friends.
Thank you

Hagan Silverplate book is complete and easy to use.......2006-03-15
I found many of the patterns I collect covered in Hagan's book. The drawings are large and easy to use to identify your pieces. I also bought Hagan's Sterling Flatware which is set up in a similar manner. You can also use both books to note which patterns you want to search for. The dates given in the books allowed me to note which patterns were contemporary with the china I collect.
I've looked at other silver identification books and I liked these best.
Great reference book.......2006-01-09
I have owned this book for at least 3 years, it is the most used book I own. If you are interested in identifying many pieces of silver plate, this is the book for you. Very easy to use. I was just on Amazon to see if there was an updated version yet, or I am trying to decide if I should buy a new one. Mine looks ragged, I have used it so much.
Helpful, but so much more is needed!.......2005-03-14
I collect silverplate - mostly flatware, and have been studying it for several years. I'm not the authority - that's why I want to learn more!
First of all, this book needs to be updated. I think that there are many more collectors today with the advent of Ebay. My favorite pattern, Rogers Exquisite 1940 is listed as "S" or seldom collected but let me tell you, it is a hot commodity on Ebay. Conversely, my aunt's pattern, Rogers Ambassador 1919, is listed as "C" or collectible but the items do not bring as high a price as my Exquisite pieces do.
The index needs to be better cross-referenced, as others have noted. Photographs instead of line drawings of the patterns would be nice. Also, a bit more on the history of silverplate and the reasons for its peaks and dips in popularity would be nice.
I use my silverplate for everyday use and put it in the diswasher every day. It still looks great. I am not looking to preserve it but to use it to make my life more beautiful and gracious. Others would be more willing to buy it and use it if they knew the truth about this marvelously inexpensive collectible. It's so easy to quickly polish it up for a special occasion (and if you use it, it never tarnishes!) and - well, I almost feel like I should write a book myself!

Absolutely Awesome! A+.......2004-04-12
After seeing and being totally impressed with the quilt on the front cover of Quilter's Newsletter Magazine's March 2004 issue I had to purchase this book! The quilt on the cover of QNM is designed based off of the patterns in this book, only it is not red and green--it is pink, magenta, teal, purple, and blue (beautiful!). One of the most important things that I look for in a pattern is versitality. This book has many patterns in it and though the book is about red and green quilts, these patterns are very versitale and could be made from any color pallett.
Traditional quilts are very beautiful and Ms. Kimball guides you thru the meanings and histories behind each symbol in each block. The book is very well written with a lot of color pictures for examples. Another thing that I really enjoyed about this book was that Ms. Kimball, unlike many other authors, wants you, as a quilter, to use your own creativity and imagination. She even tells you to use her blocks as starting points and encourages you to expand on them. She also includes numerous small diagrams of quilt blocks with the same name but different layouts. Examples of this are the Rose of Sharron, Pineapple, and American Beauty Rose to name a few.
This book is an extremely worth while investment! A+ all the way!
EXTRAORDINARY!.......2003-09-14
Packed for the price, this book has easy to follow directions and fabulous applique designs typical of the red and green antique quilts from the 1800's. If you have a passion for antique quilts, applique, or red and green, this book is for you or any quilter - beginner or seasoned. ONE OF THE MOST EXTRAORDINARY aspects about this book is that Ms. Kimball has taken the time to not only provide a large pattern for a particular block, but provides SCORES of drawings of particular blocks with changes to the designs so that one is not confined to the pattern offered. An example of this would be for instance, the popular Single Rose Wreath. Ms. Kimball provides the layout and applique patterns for a 16" x16" block; then offers 16 OTHER rose sketches (not enlarged, however) to give varitey. The smaller sketches are even documented designs (or spin-offs) from other quilts in books and musemums.
The book has poignant information about antique quilts and the quilters themselves, history of Red and Green Quilts and the patterns. Ms. Kimball includes a gallery of photos which includes antique and modern reproduction quilts, one of which is her own; a stunning Hexagon Rose Wreath quilt.
The book even goes so far as to give instructions for making an impromptu light box! This is a perfect book for the beginner who wants to learn how to applique because directions are in the book. It is fitting for a seasoned quilter who wants to expand her/his knowledge of American quilt heritage and reproduce an heirloom. A very valued publication in my libray. Thank you.
red & green a delight.......2003-01-26
As a beginner in the art of applique, I found this book clear and easy to follow. This have also sent my senses into overdrive thinking of the quilts I can do in the future.
And to think I almost didn't pick up this book.......2002-11-23
Although I appreciate applique, I didn't used to be a huge fan of doing it myself. I had always appreciated the instant gratification of rotary-cut strip-pieced quilts. Kimball's "Red and Green: An Applique Tradition" has helped change that.
"R&G" focuses on red-and-green applique quilts from the mid-19th century, but also includes photographs of earlier whole-cloth and medallion, to show the progression of quilt-making styles, and several modern quilts that beautifully reproduce this traditional look. Most fascinating to me was Kimball's discussion about how red and green became popular colors for these applique quilts: Around 1850, aniline dye produced more colorfast cloth. Green was produced by overdying yellow with blue. The green fabrics almost always changed color, since the two dyes did not have the same degree of colorfastness, but quilt makers found the resulting colors pleasing. At about the same time, "Turkey red"--using a dye that was much more colorfast than other reds--became fashionable--and commanded three times the price of ordinary calico.
A red and green applique quilts usually was a woman's "best quilt," Kimball explains, and a woman generally made one of these labor-intensive quilts either just before her marriage as part of her trousseau or later in life, after her children were grown.
"R&G" contains many stories about the making and use of these applique quilts. My favorite is about a circuit-riding preacher whose young wife defied tradition by joining her husband on all his overnight trips, instead of only on special occasions. Her repeated presence presented problems in the southern communities he served since a visit from a preacher's wife dictated that the hostess must thoroughly clean the house, wear her second-best dress and a white apron, and use her best quilt on the guest bed. If the preacher were staying over, food and bed were sufficient. After a while, the frustrated women on the circuit decided to stop putting out their best appliqued quilts on the guest bed when the preacher's wife came to visit. "She was pretty headstrong, that girl, but even she couldn't ignore what the absence of the best quilt signified," Kimball quotes from an earlier work on quilts.
For quiltmakers interested in reproducing one of these traditional quilts, Kimball provides two dozen full-size patterns as well as ideas for other designs. Her instructions for how to assemble these blocks seem very easy to follow. What I liked best was that she doesn't just give instructions for one or two "cookie cutter" quilts, but instead emphasizes that quiltmakers should follow their own inspiration, using the design elements and ideas from the depicted quilts. "R&G" contains plenty of inspiration, from the historic quilts and biographies of their makers in the front section, to the numerous rose, tulip, fruits and berry patterns in the middle, to the gallery of historic and reproduction quilts at the end.
Even if you aren't a fan of making applique quilts, "R&G" is interesting reading, and it might entice you to try a project.

Once in a while I pick up a book and actually feel afterward that I got every penny's worth. This is one of those. Jeana has combined the best features of great books on traditional applique forms - history, numerous quality photos of antique quilts, modern tradition-based creations, and patterns. If you haven't caught the traditional, red and green bug - fasten your seat belt because this book will leave you hungry to learn more. Thanks to Jeana for a really USEFUL contribution.

Good read, Nice old patterns.......2007-05-27
Although most of the patterns are in my collection, the author includes stories of the rescued treasures which only adds to the charm of the old patterns. I found "Missouri Daisy" a lovely addition to my favorite vintage patterns.
