4 out of 5 stars Beautifully Drawn.......2007-06-15

I found this book to be beautifully rendered with with many drawings of examples face types, features and body language gestures that were clear and easy to understand. But the descriptions were very general and didn't cover all of the variations that exist in reality. (I suppose one is supposed to take one of the authors face reading classes for more info. listed in the back of the book.) Still, it was a facinating read, and a fun topic to try among friends.

1 out of 5 stars Phrenology for the '90s.......2007-02-01

If you wish learn to identify people's personalities or how they may be feeling or may be thinking at a given moment then his book is a waste of your time and money. The ideas in this book are nothing but pseudoscientific nonsense. The text is full of glittering generalities and vague statements which nearly anyone would agree were true about them, regardless of face shape. If you wish to truly read people, your time and money would be much better spent on just about anything by Paul Ekman or any of the books by Desmond Morris on human social interaction. Avoid this book.

1 out of 5 stars save your money!.......2006-12-13

I am a trial lawyer with 26 yrs experience. this book is a joke. there is no science to back up his opinions, which are about as "scientific" as reading chicken guts. It's basically a rehash of the "science" of divining character from the shape of peoples skulls.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2006-03-19

I had the immense pleasure of having my face read today by Mr. Fulfer, and very accurately, too. If his book can teach people even a tenth of his skill, then it is valuable indeed. I plan to read my copy very carefully.

4 out of 5 stars Good Reference book; Check out Rose Rosetree, too.......2003-12-30

What I like the most about Mr. Fulfer's reference book is that the information is well organized, so it is quick and easy to find the data on, say, a nose which has a bump in the middle and large square nostrils.

I have also read Rose Rosetree's "Wrinkles are God's Makeup," which focuses on personality changes which out-picture on the face over time. It is a fascinating book, though not quite as well organized as "Amazing Face Reading."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guide!.......2007-09-28

Face Off is an excellent step by step guide to analyzing a face and creating great caricatures. I've been an artist for more than 20 years and was always amused by caricatures, but never developed a knack for creating them . . . until I got this book. After only 6 weeks of following the step by step guidelines I've developed my own style and I'm creating hilarious pictures of my friends and family. I highly recommend this book to both beginning artists and more experienced professionals looking to branch into caricatures.

5 out of 5 stars Great Modern Caricature How-To.......2007-08-04

"Face Off" is one of the better books on basic caricaturing, in part because of its modern, graphic-heavy approach. Also, in my opinion, this work is more up to date than most other books on the subject, even explaining how to color your drawings in PhotoShop without screwing up the original artwork.

This book covers a lot of ground, although out of necessity it isn't always what you would call "in-depth" in its information. For a broader understanding of caricaturing, I would suggest that you get this book along with another more detailed work such as Len Redmann's How To Draw Caricatures and/or Let's Toon Caricatures by Keelan Parham. I have found all of these books to be extremely helpful, especially when taken together.

Overall, this is a fun and informative book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2007-06-19

Well when I got this book in the mail, I was very excited. Only to have my bubble bust when while flipping through the pages i realized that these are more cartoons than caricatures. None the less the information presented here is invaluable to any aspiring cartoonist or caricaturist. (I strongly believe theres a difference). However i'm not really complaining I would still recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn to draw caricatures. I belive by mastering this book one would have obtained the skills to produce both caricature and cartoon portraits. So in my final analysis I would have to give it a 4/5 stars (due to my initial disapointment).

5 out of 5 stars The Book I've been looking for........2007-05-22

This book combines both great artistic skills with instructional skills to create an excellent book for the less experienced caricature artist. I found much that I could use in improving my own caricaturing within this book's pages. The author shows step by step partial drawings along with the completed black and white caricature, as well as the colored in version. I like the author's caricaturing style, not over exagerated, but very recognizable as the person pictured. This is the book, that I think I will get the most use out of, of the 4 books that I purchased together. I really love it.

5 out of 5 stars You gotta get this BOOK!.......2007-02-24

I cannot tell you how long I have waited for a book with this much insight. If you are an aspiring caricature artist this book is a M-U-S-T. I have been doing caricature art for over ten years and this book filled in all the gaps. Harry Hamernik tells it all and does it step by step.

Buy this book and close your account because this is all you need to grow in your craft. Well done Harry, well done.

This book is out of print. But it is one of the best on the subject of the frontiers of human psychic powers such as teleportion, levitation, and black magic. The author's experiences and anecdotes about his travels through Africa, Haiti, Indonesia, etc. definitely have the ring of truth. Especially for an expat like myself residing in Indonesia, I have come to understand that people in other cultures focus their human abilities based on a different set of priorities than Westerners

Book Description

All of the topography of planet Earth is comprised of a series of easily recognizable pictures. Each picture links to the next and together they substantiate the validity of scripture. The placing of these images appears to be deliberate. The story told through these topographic images appear to link to the Bible with what is possibly a decipherable message from God.That is the thesis of this book. Anyone interested in this amazing discovery should be forewarned. The facts are nothing less than startling. The evidence may change the way you think about Science, Philosophy and Religion.

This book is scholarly, easy to read, well endorsed and happens to concern The largest single feature on Earth.

The Face on the Pacific Ocean Floor makes up almost 1/2 of this planet! The book begins with an overview and analysis of the Face on the Pacific Ocean Floor. It explains how modern mapmakers used sonar and satellite technology to help them in creating some of the most accurate maps ever made. Then there is a brief history of ocean depth soundings and some details concerning why we can trust the accuracy of these modern ocean floor maps. Then after some basics about how the map tracings used in the book had to comply with specified criteria, the author begins to unravel A Great Mystery.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Astounding!.......2007-05-12

The fact that scientists cannot and do not deny that the Earth is a series of images, all the scientific data proves this is real. The only thing I disagree with are some of his religious interpretations, but he invites everyone to try and find the meaning. He does not claim to know why or have all the answers, he's only searching for the truth and asks that all of us help figure out what this means for us.

1 out of 5 stars Like Seeing Faces in the Clouds.......2006-01-30

I'm glad to hear that this author at least admits that his theory is greatly influenced by his religious beliefs. He has used a hodge-podge of science facts to support a contention based on nothing more amazing than the tendency of the human mind to put some kind of order to random information, be it visual, auditory or otherwise, like looking at the clouds and seeing faces, animals or other objects. I have the feeling that God would have created a face that doesn't need additional illustrations and outlining to see it.

5 out of 5 stars dressing the emperor naked... now what about that burning Bush? .......2006-01-29

True or False?

Looks to me like another brilliantly slick and subversive cyber-reality project; intended to make a joke about how silly and gullible we all can be?

If this is not the case, I will eat all the SPAM in central Alabama. Promise.

neko

p.s. A very similar looking "face" happened to come up on a random scanography I set together the other night < no joke...

5 out of 5 stars Valuable insight.......2002-09-24

The author has the talent to combine topics from different fields in an astonishing and interesting way. The face on the Pacific Ocean and the other geographic features combined with the God of the Bible is a very strong hint for non-believers that God is reality. The book shows profound proof for God's existence - however, some ignorant people will probably say "I can't care less" or " Oh - that's interesting". I recommend this book for any person who is interested in real facts - it shows valuable insight in a topic which a generation ago could not be written about due to lack of technological advance.

5 out of 5 stars There Must Be Sight To See Light.......2002-07-11

I was immediately impressed with this work. It follows that God would do this since He put the story of redemption in the star constellations, why not also in the earth? "Deep calleth unto deep..." Many people will not see it (admit it) no matter how obvious it is. I also think it interesting that the band "YES" has an album from 1973 called "Tales From Topographic Oceans" which I think is exactly what this is. And like two of that albums four songs titles say: "The Revealing Science Of God" and "The Ancient Giants Under The Sun" I'd say YES to both. It's for real.
I have put a map of the world up on my wall and bought several map books. I even showed the people working in one book store the face in a very good map book as I was checking out, where the ocean floors were displayed and showed them the Kneeling King. I don't think they were convinced but I am. My roommate thinks I'm off on yet another flight of fancy because I believe this is true. Well, I just see God's handiwork. I see also Lloyd Carpenter's sincerity in all that he says and how he presents everything. I believe God has revealed these things to those who are humble and hidden them from others. I will never look at a map of this Earth the way I used to but now with tremendous awe and wonder and humility and thanksgiving to our glorious creator who loves us so much. To me the figure of Jesus is so clear. I spot it every time I see a map of the world and I say, "There's Jesus!"

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Unlike any other Paradox Press Factoid Book.......2003-07-26

I picked up the Big Book of Martyrs because I love all of the Factoid Books. As a series, they are irreverent, concise, witty, and always interesting.

As mentioned by a few other reviewers, the Big Book of Martyrs treats its subject matter with more respect than other subjects covered by the series. Check out the chapter on Princess Di in the Big Book of Scandal to see Paradox Press at its most scathing. But while poking fun at the foibles of the British monarchy can be entertaining, mocking people who died for their faith is tasteless. So I was relieved to see that the martyrs were not depicted as ridiculous.

However, these are not wholly objective descriptions of the saints' lives. The book seems to have been written by Christians for Christians. I myself am not a Christian, and I was hoping for a more secular approach.

It is still worth reading though. There are plenty of weird stories, such as the woman who woke up with a beard, after praying to be made unattractive. The beard caused her arranged husband-to-be to reject her, allowing her to keep her sworn virginity intact. St. Christopher's story is pretty strange, as well.

I do not recommend giving this book to children, since there are some graphic images, such as St. Stephen being stoned to death.

5 out of 5 stars Clever Way to Retell the Lives of Christian Martyrs.......2002-04-10

While many students might find reading about the lives of early or memorable Christians boring or time-consuming, the stories of religion's greatest heroes must not be forgotten. "The Big Book of Martyrs" is an excellent book to have especially if you have children or young adults who find reading a comic book much more interesting and entertaining.

Illustrated in the form of comic strips, The stories of many great and memorable Christian martyrs such as Joan of Arc and St. Paul are told in a respectful, interesting manner. Using dialogue and excellent pencil drawings, the lives of these martyrs comes to life as the reader becomes very interested with every page they turn.

Illustrated by over fifty of the world's top comic artists, "The Big Book of Martyrs" is an excellent companion book to have around when studying theology. It hits all the right spots when covering the lives of every subject featured in the book, and it is overwhelmingly entertaining. The book should be popular with the young adult crowd due to the fact that the book is composed of comic strips, however adults shouldn't rule it out of their reading lists.

Overall, this is a great book to have. It will provide countless times of very inspirational and educational reading to anyone who picks it up.

5 out of 5 stars Informative.......2001-05-29

It is my experience that this is the least popular of the Big Book series, usually because it treats its subject matter with a more serious tone than all the other books. However, being an information junkie who also appreciates good art, I feel that this book does a good job of delivering on both.

While I have never been accused of being the best of Christians, it is my opinion that this subject matter deserves to be treated seriously and respectfully given that it often involves telling the stories of people standing up for their message of love and peace at the threat of violence (a lesson less tolerant Christians can learn from).

Many of the saints should not be subject to criticism, regardless of the imperfect record of the Catholic church. That being said, not everyone who has been granted sainthood is really a saint. For example, some were mere barbarians respected by the Catholic church for their zeal in slaughtering innocent people of different faiths. But this book, while being respectful of the title of saint, does not cower from pointing out these occassional pieces of hypocrisy. Also included in this book is a chapter dealing with saints who were purely fictional (and are even recognized as such by the Catholic church) including the still popular St. Christopher (of the medallion fame), but I'd be surpised at anyone taking this as an attack on their faith.

Since this book is about the history of saints and the process (and politics) of cannonization, it is factual regardless of one's personal faith or lack thereof, but I am sure it appeals to Christians the most. But the interesting stories and artwork are worthwhile for anyone to experience, and, yes, even the nonreligious can find inspiration in tales of people standing up for their beliefs in the face of persecution, including those who have been targeted by the Catholic church.

5 out of 5 stars You Don't Have To Be Christian To Like It!.......2000-06-22

In "The Big Book of Martyrs," Paradox Press takes a look at religion. Many saints of the Christian church have led amazing lives, and this volume covers some of them. It should inspire you no matter what you believe!

5 out of 5 stars A well-made change of pace from the usual big book series.......1999-05-30

While the rest Big book series handles subjects with more than normal dose of irreverance, this book shifts gears and handles the subject with all reverance due to the subject, while maintaining the seperation of legend and fact. The artwork is also respectful of the subject, and in all cases fitting. Noteworthy entries are the first Martyrs of Rome, with Gahan Wilson's appropriately grotesque images of Nero's atrocities, and Trina Roberts' good girl artwork for St. Agnes, the ultimate good girl.
