This is the basic reference guide to the international cinema. Put it next to your TV and VCR and you'll be able to answer the questions that inevitably arise when you watch a movie: "What other films has she been in?"; "Haven't I heard that director's name before?"; and "What in tarnation is a gaffer?" The Film Encyclopedia contains biographies and filmographies of actors, directors, producers, and cinematographers, as well as screenwriters, editors, musical directors, production designers, and critics. You can look up films by nationality and find a history of a given country's contribution to the art. Technical data is also indexed, so you can read not only about film stock and the apparatus of the camera, but also about the duties of the gaffer, the key grip, and the best boy. The book's introduction states that Ephraim Katz, who died in 1992, set out to write "the most comprehensive one-volume encyclopedia of world cinema ever published in the English language." The Film Encyclopedia contains more information than any other single-volume film reference and is also the best written movie guide of its kind. Because most of the entries were written by Katz himself, reading this book is like talking to a witty and learned film historian who has devoted his life to understanding--and loving--the cinema.
Book Description
A completely revised and udpated edition of the classic film reference which has sold nearly 150,000 copies in its previous editions.

– Directors, producers, stars, screenwriters, and cinematographers
– Styles, genres, and schools of filmmaking
– Motion picture studios and film centers
– Film–related organizations and events
– Industry jargon and technical terms
– Inventions, inventors, and equipment
– Plus, an index of Academy Award winning films and artists, top grossing films, and much more.

The International Film encyclopedia.......2007-05-14
This 5th edition is like all the ones before a very complete source of information on stars in the movie industie, but also about many others in de film industry.
The best
CINEMA ENCYCLOPEDIA.......2007-05-06
This encyclopedia is a MUST HAVE for those who enjoy films at home or at the theatre.
Hard to beat.......2006-11-28
Without a doubt this is still the best all-around film encyclopedia available to the general public. Actors and actresses, directors, producers, photographers, costume designers, composers, and screenwriters are all included, from the silent era to the present. Each person gets a short biographical entry with a fairly complete listing of all movies they were involved with (these listings can be quite extensive). Movie associations and film terminology are also listed and explained. Individual movies are not listed as separate entries, however. My only quibble with this 5th edition is with the statement on the editor's note page that claims "we continue to keep our word and do not eliminate any of the more than 8,000 entries" - which I assume means from previous editions. Yet in comparing it with the first edition (1979) in just the first 20 pages (out of over 1500) I count a half-dozen or so names that are missing that were included in the first. Perhaps these names were taken out in the 2nd or 3rd editions, but that still makes the claim hard to justify. But this is a minor complaint; this volume should be on every movie lover's shelf.
The Film Encyclopedia 5e....by Ephraim Katz.......2006-11-10
I updated from an earlier edition on this book. I consider this to be an esssential for the movie lover. Not a book with movie reviews, but a (large) volumn of info of all types. Bio's of the stars & performers list all of their films. Many articles on techniques, etc make this a 1 volumn source of info on just about anything movie wise.
My Finger-tip Reference Guide.......2006-11-04
This is the 3rd edition I have purchased, since the info continually changes. It's the most comprehensive guide to information about the movie industry and I will continue to buy each new edition. I highly recommend it to any one who enjoys movie history and trivia.
Book Description
Here is a revolutionary resource for all guitarists with over 2000 chords. Not only can you see each chord in an easy-to-read diagram, but clear, close-up photographs in full color make it easy to get your fingers into position instantly.

Great for basics.......2005-12-06
There are a ton of great chords in here. I love the fact that there is a photo of each one. It is hard for me to overlook the fact that the title calls this an encyclopedia, because it is missing many different chord extensions and variations.

Skin is In!!!.......2007-05-29
From cover to cover this book is full of usefull knowledge. You can search by actress, movie, or tv show. I purchased this book for my brothers birthday. I even had to buy my own copy.
Decent book, but the website is incredible!.......2006-04-10
This book is decent enough, but not the Skincyclopedia it claims to be. As others have said, it is not kept up to date, and doesn't have complete listings including times. Mr. Skin's website, however, is the absolute ultimate! For simple reference, it's absolutely free and complete resource constantly updated. For a fee, it will give you film clips and still photos of all the scenes mentioned!
So, this is a very basic reference, but the website is the ultimate guide.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!.......2005-11-19
Not sure where to start and I don't want to write to see how i write. Mr. Skin must be getting commissions on the orders readers make per his recos. He and his group don't see "naked" with the same criteria. Some descriptions are understated, most are overstated.
Book Description
Every chord you'll ever need to play shown clearly in diagrams and notation. Special section on inversions, substitutions, and progressions.
Customer Reviews:
Did not receive product.......2007-03-28
I never received the book. There should be a way to notify the customer when the package should arrive without the customer having to keep reviewing the email. The mail deliver did not leave a note that he was leaving the package elsewhere. I wanted the product.
Very complete chord encyclopedia.......2003-11-23
I purchased this book because it was the most complete book of keyboard chords that I could find. The chords for each note are ordered in an intuitive way. This book has every chord that I have ever tried to find. There is a chart in the front section that shows alternate names or symbols. That is, the chart shows that 13 may also be shown as 7(add13) or 7(add6).
One thing I particularly like about the book is the simple, uncluttered, and easy to read presentation. The pictures of each chord are large enough to see easily. While they do present 78 chords for every note, there are only 8 chords per page. This book measures about 12" by 9". It's very handy to open the book to the page I need. While I'm playing, I can quickly glance over to see the chord one more time.
I have found this book to be highly useful and recommend it to anyone looking for a keyboard chord book.
A review of Vogler's book.......2001-09-11
This book is a timely resource for anyone who has to deal with chord symbols--such as is found on rhythm charts and lead sheets-- and wants to know how to play them on the piano or keyboard. It even could help an arranger who has landed on a chord he likes but doesn't know what to call it.
This book has a Chord Construction section at the beginning, consisting of a review of the role that scales play, intervals, chords, inversions, altered triads and chord names. That's just 4 pages, so it doesn't bog down there. Next follows the major section of the book, which consists of *78* major and minor chords for each of the 12 notes of the scale. Each chord is depicted with what the chord looks like on a staff, what it would look like on a keyboard (the affected keys are shaded), and what its chord symbol typically would be. In the key of C, for example, you'd see everything from a plain old "C" chord to something like "C13 b5 #9" (whew!).
The final section of the book deals with what the left hand could do against the chords (whatever they are and against whatever rhythms your RH might be playing them). It provides info about such styles as boogie-woogie, funk, jazz & blues, swing, latin, rock and shuffle. There are multiple possible LH rhythms given for each of those, giving you variety in your possible choices. There also are multiple depictions of combination RH/LH patterns for rhythm & blues, gospel, country and rock.
This is one of those resource books that you like to have handy in your music library, for when you need it you'll probably REALLY need it right then!

With thousands of intricate and colorful illustrations presented in a browser-friendly paperback format, the new compact edition of The Macmillan Visual Dictionary is an easily portable follow-up to the popular hardback version. The dictionary connects each phrasing, key word, or key words to a grouping of finely detailed and descriptive pictures, all formatted into a series of sections assembled in an easy-to-follow index at the beginning of the book. With a depth that includes 12 kinds of mushrooms and 4 types of billiards, the Visual Dictionary also manages to keep a wide enough focus so that most anyone interested in contemporary life will find a section or two to capture their eye and attention--whether they're painstakingly searching the book for help with a research paper, tracking down a contested fact, or peering through the many vivid drawings for pure pleasure.
Book Description
From a castle to a cathedral, from a socket wrench to a telephone, from a working farm to a grapevine, from human anatomy to human ornamentation, unlock the entire universe in a single volume.
Customer Reviews:
Incredible visual reference source, especially if you're in the graphic design/illustration business.......2007-09-10
I remember I got this when I was about 12-13 years old... I was amazed by the quality of the illustrations... Note that NONE of the illustrations in this book are photographs, they are all computer-drawn illustrations (probably illustrated using adobe illustrator or coreldraw). The quality of these illustrations is top-notch, looking almost like photographs. I am still amazed at the amount of pictures this book contains, it has every single aspect of human life including industry, agriculture, lifestyle, sports, business, finance, and more... Anything that has a word on this planet is surely illustrated in this book. Take advantage that this book itself is relatively cheap if you buy it used (about 5 bucks... not bad at all considering that this book has over 800 pages of highly detailed pictures).
Suprisingly Useful Resource.......2007-07-22
I bought this book as a speach aid for a relative who suffers from aphasia and cannot speak clearly. Unlike a phonetic dictionary, this book is divided into subject areas that become familar after a few minutes of browsing. Each detailed illustration has identifying text names pointing to various areas. The user can quickly locate an appropriate picture, allowing the care giver to better understand the attempted speech. This technique would also be useful for a learning imparied person, and perhaps also for foreign language interactions. The main "downside" of this book is its large size, making it inconvenient to use in casual settings. A "lite" version that presents only basic illustrations (rather than including jet engines!) would be a welcome addition to this series.
Inspiration Found in a Dictionary.......2005-12-20
For thirteen years, I've been consulting my 1992 edition of "The Macmillan Visual Dictionary." Searching its publisher's web site for a newer edition, I got 0 results. If I ran the world, this fine work would be on the Internet, its entries updated daily.
To artists and writers: it's such a classic, I don't really miss the would-be updates. Using computer technology, the authors use vivid descriptive color, each component delicately outlined. You start by finding the term you're looking for within one of the general categories, each color tabbed for clarity. Or you may find the page numbers for it in the index. What is a fetlock? Within the animal kingdom, you will find two double-page spreads of the horse, its exterior and its skeleton. Or look for your term in the index: curb bit, page 649, how it fits in the horse's mouth, and page 650, pictures of nine types of bits.
Let's say you have a picture of a thing in your mind, but you don't know its name. Find this image in one of the 28 color tabbed categories.
For artists, this visual dictionary is loaded with sources for inspiration. Take gems alone. Sketching facets, I want to compare my imaginary world found in the facets of a sapphire to that found in those of an emerald. What medium would best represent your idea? Photography? What kind? Here you will find cameras and accessories, for both still and video. For writers, specific terms along with clear pictures of what you are writing about increase accuracy and help bring your poetry and prose to life.
Excellent Tool For Fiction Writers.......2002-11-03
This book has over 800 pages of visual items and then arrows that point to them and tell you what they're called. For example, on one two page spread an entire passenger liner ship is drawn with all the names of all the rooms and terraces and parts and compenents. just looking at the drawing inspires a mystery set aboard a cruise ship! Chapter Headings include "Astronomy" "Geography" "Farming" "Architecture" "House" "House Furniture" "Gardening" "Clothing" "Communications" "Road Transport" "Rail Transport" "Air Transport" "Weapons", and many, many more.
This an excellent tool and I'd recommend it for anyone who wants to know their way around places you might not already know your way around!
Fabulous and entertaining reference material.......2002-07-28
This fabulous book serves as an instant vocabulary enhancer and is packed with finely illustrated pictures that not only widen one's knowledge but also make for hours of wholesome entertainment.

Customer Reviews:
Worth It for the Film Credits.......2006-10-17
If you like films this is an invaluable book. The film credits alone are valuable and informative for cross-reference directors, writers, cinematographers and the like. The book covers sci-fi, fantasy, horror with an affinity for films of the like. Great text.
Fun pictures - Spartan information.......2006-08-21
Do the math 1,017-pages, only 700 dedicated to film the rest is an index of artists. Now in the 700 pages we have to stuff small four" square photos (about one per page), a few larger photos (all black and white), and 9,000 films (1896-1999); that leaves approximately one inch and a half page column to describe the title main actors and writing source.
Some of the pictures ar fun, just knowing the film is made is useful. However that is all there is.

Customer Reviews:
This One's Hard to Beat!.......2004-12-14
I bought this book for my son when he was about 14 months old, and he loved it from the first moment he laid eyes on it. Now, at almost 21 months old, he's still fascinated by it and can name about 75% of the pictures in the book. It is organized into categories so that kids learn which things go together (e.g., apples, bananas, and grapes are all fruit). We take it almost everywhere, but it is especially useful on long car trips. While in the car, we can find things we see outside and then figure out where they are in the book, or at least what category they might go into if they aren't in the book.
I haved tried to purchase this for friends' children, but to no avail; this version seems to be quite hard to come by.
Nearly as good is the updated "My Big Word Book" by Roger Priddy. I think the layout of that book is more attractive, but I worry about the durability of the spiral binding. All in all, however, I have yet to find a Priddy book that wasn't a big hit with my toddler!
Great book.......2004-06-17
My 18 month old twins just love turning the pages of this book and looking at all the pictures. I bought this book when they were less than a year old, and they would be overjoyed when I would sit down with them and point out and name the different objects on the page. Now that they are older, they want to hold the book and turn the pages for themselves and in the process have torn many pages of this much loved book. I think this book is a great teaching tool for parents of young children.
Worth the buy (again) for my younger children.......2004-01-22
This is the third time I am purchasing this book. The first two were so loved and worn that the pages eventually fell out. Now my two year old is interested in naming everything under the sun, and he deserves his own Big Book of Everything. If he wears through this one before my 6 month old is ready for it, I'd buy a fourth.
Not just for 4 and up..........2003-04-03
I've given this book (and its earlier editions) often as a new-baby gift for babies in the US and abroad. I feel that it's a great present for non-native speakers, because of all the words you only learn in your native language!
My granddaughter, age 22 months has loved it for about the last year, as have other very young children I know. For a while, she called it "a book" -- that is, the only one she really acknowledged. She's now branched out to other books but still enjoys identifying the photos in this one. She doesn't care if they're obscure, she likes discussing them, and her favorite pages vary over time. Like the other reviewers, I'll soon be buying a new copy as the first one is wearing out. Maybe the publisher should consider a hard-page edition.
Visual Journey.......2001-08-25
My first impression was that this book was overly stocked with pictures. However, on a second look I could see the benefit of grouping items together and putting many items on one page. You can teach many items that relate to other items you will find in your home or in the world as you travel.
This is a visual journey for children that includes 800 brilliantly colorful pictures. Even the inside covers are "covered" with pictures. For the young child, you can start with the familiar items around the home like a lamp, a vase, a telephone, bed, toothpaste and highchair.
The section on clothes teaches all the basics...then onto the toys. That will most likely be one of the favorite areas in this book. Cooking and baking might encourage more adventure in the kitchen. Maybe using this book to introduce a child to the names of kitchen essentials will get them interested in making something delicious.
Other sections include: Food to eat, Fruit, vegetables, In the workshop, Flowers and plants, Weather, and Seasons and times. Then onto: On the farm, In the countryside (love the meadow picture!), Big Animals, Small animals, Baby animals, Birds. The theme changes constantly and next you will see hot-air balloons and everything that flies in the sky.
Children who live in the city will love: In the sea, At the seaside, Noises, Animal noises (you have to love the mouse on this page!). Children in the country will love: In the city, Buildings, Building machines, Shopping (yummy markets and bookstores). In the jobs people do, children are dressed up in each of the main job descriptions.
"Me and My Body" is a section to explain the names of the mouth, back, eyelashes, teeth..etc. Things we do such as crying, touching, eating, throwing a ball, hiding, laughing are all pictured with the word of the activity. Shapes and patters lists the main shapes at the top of the page and then you can find the patterns and shapes in what you see in the pictures.
For instance, the red square looks like the windows and the star looks like the starfish. The counting section is especially tasty with all sorts of candies to count.
Then, the next page opens and you see hills, deserts, a waterfall, a river, a volcano and much more. Each word has a picture and each picture is a delightful look at the world around us. To easily find a word your child is learning...just use the handy index to look up words like store, toothbrush, jaguar, cyclist or even beach.

Book Description
For decades, Screen World has been the film professional's, as well as the film buff's, favorite and indispensable annual screen resource, full of all the necessary statistics and facts. Now Screen World editor Barry Monush has compiled another comprehensive work for every film lover's library. In the first of two volumes, this book chronicles the careers of every significant film actor, from the earliest silent screen stars - Chaplin, Pickford, Fairbanks - to the mid-1960s, when the old studio and star systems came crashing down. Each listing includes: a brief biography, photos from the famed Screen World archives, with many rare shots; vital statistics; a comprehensive filmography; and an informed, entertaining assessment of each actor's contributions - good or bad! In addition to every major player, Monush includes the legions of unjustly neglected troupers of yesteryear. The result is a rarity: an invaluable reference tool that's as much fun to read as a scandal sheet. It pulsates with all the scandal, glamour, oddity and glory that was the lifeblood of its subjects. Contains over 1,000 photos!

Disappointing.......2005-03-10
At first, I was very pleased with this directory, and I gave it a glowing review with 4 stars. I had deducted a star because of the bad editing, i.e. lots of typos and factual errors. There seems to be not one page where there aren't lots of typos, and the factual errors reflect a biogrsapher who seems to be just faking it. For example, Nina Foch's entry states that she played the secretary to a "suicidal businessman" in Executive Suite. This is incorrect - the businessman died of a heart attack, the daughter, played by Barbara Stanwyck, was suicidal. And this popped up on the first browse through the book.
Now, I must deduct still another star. I had compared this book favorably to the David Thomson "Biographical Dictionary," because Thomson's is neither biographical nor a dictionary, filled with the unauthoritative, opinions of a phony movie critic, and a mean spirited one at that. Well, alas, upon further reading, I found Monush's work to be equally mean spirited. For example, Mounsh gratuitously mentions a particular actor's homosexuality - something which had absolutely no bearing on his career or work. Of another actor's homosexuality which was was notorious and indeed affected his career, Monush makes no mention. Why Monush chooses to stigmatize one actor and then cover up for another I can only explain as personal favor.
Equally mystifying is are the omissions. Why does Monush include obscure character actors but exclude well-known feature players? For example, why does he exclude Erik Rhodes, who gained immortality in the Astair-Rogers classics Top Hat and Gay Divorcee ("Your wife is safe with Tonetti, he prefers spaghetti.")
Why does Monush exclude Bruce Bennett? Bennett wasn't just a player - he was a star - a minor star, but a star, one of those Olympic Athletes who, as Herman Brix, played Tarzan (some say superior to Weismuller), then changed his name and eventually became a headliner, co-starring with the likes of Crawford and Bogart. Couldn't Monush find a photo?
This directory claims to be encyclopedic, but it definitely is not. It has bad editing, poor fact-checking and unexplained omissions. Still, it is the only directory I know of, extant, which contains photos with the entries, and it does attempt to flesh out the entries. It is superior to the pretentious Thomson and perhaps less dry of a read than the essential and comprehesive (fewer omissions) "Filmgoer's Encyclopedia" by Ephraim Katz. This is a useful reference, but let us hope a better one comes along. So far, if you can dispense with the photos, the Katz is the best.
Best of All!.......2003-12-17
Barry Monush's "Encyclopedia of Hollywood Film Actors" is the best volume of its type. Other guides to performers tend either to be mean spirited or incomplete. This book is witty, informative and comprehensive. Each entry has some unusual or fascinating fact. This book has more complete credits information than most reference works, but this one is also fun to read. All the stars who became famous before 1965, including many of today's great stars, are here. Actors who came to prominence 1965->present will be covered in Vol. 2. The rare "headshot" photos alone are worth the price of purchase. If you know anyone who enjoys movies, they'll love this amazing book!

Customer Reviews:
A succinct, thorough guide to film theory and technique.......2007-06-25
Routledge Key Guides are typically succinct, thorough, and extremely useful - and this is no exception. The articles cover a broad range of topics from simple editing techniques to sophisticated Lacanian theory. Hayward's tone is authoritative, but never pedantic. These entries are not excessively wordy and are thus useful to beginning film students, or even regular film buffs. That is not to say, however, that the book isn't useful to more advanced students. While most film students will probably own Bordwell's "Film Art", you may need to do a little digging before you find exactly what you need. This guide is very straightforward to use, so you never have to hunt around for, say, how the concept of "agency" relates to the cinema. This isn't really a replacement for a larger volume on film theory and technique, but it is a nice companion for easy access to lots of information.
The articles range from one paragraph for terms where a straightforward definition will suffice to 21 pages on psychoanalysis. Again, Hayward's goal is communication, not a dazzling display of erudition. Nothing against dense scholarly texts - this is just easily accessible by comparison.
The book is cross-indexed and each entry includes helpful tips for further reading. Add to that an extensive list of references, and three indices (films, names, and terms) and you've got a handy reference that you'll return to again and again. Whether you're trying to get a handle on the rapidly expanding world of film studies, or you're working on a paper and you need a quick reminder of what a "parallel reversal" is, this is worth picking up.
Solid.......2007-05-13
A good book which gives an overveiw of the various topics of cinema. If you want to know what one of the ideas are, read this book. Great for writing papers in the sense that it is concise and accurate.
However, if you want a real in depth understanding of the topics covered, you'll need to look farther. This is a great starting place for any of hundreds of topics covered in the ook!
A little slow delivery, but good product.......2007-02-24
The item was new like advertised, but took a couple weeks to reach me. It is a school book and put me behind in the class.
An encyclopedia-style A to Z guide of critical cinematic concepts.......2006-07-04
Now in its revised, updated, and expanded third edition Cinema Studies: The Key Concepts is an encyclopedia-style A to Z guide of critical cinematic concepts, from "action movies" and "art direction" to "Italian neo-realism", "lap- dissolve", "30-degree rule", "widescreen" and much more. Each accessibly-written entry summarizes the concept in an amount of text ranging from half a page to several pages, and a thorough bibliography, name index, and subject index encourage quick reference. Enthusiastically recommended for students of film, anyone seeking a career in the movie industry, and even seasoned professionals looking for an easy-to-use refresher reference.

Book Description
In this major A-Z work, 'early cinema' refers to the first 20 or 25 years of the cinema's emergence at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries, that is from the early 1890s to the middle 1910s. Coverage of the pre-cinema period is also given in order to describe not only the apparatuses (and their inventors) on the basis of which cinema would develop, but also those mass-cultural forms and practices within which cinema was to emerge. With nearly 1,000 entries, the Encyclopedia presents information on the basic trajectory of early cinema history, with coverage of film production, filmmakers, film genres, and individual films; in addition, a major task of the work is to present information from the revisionist history of early cinema, with its focus on the changing nature of film exhibition and the changing patterns of reception. The Encyclopedia reveals that early cinema was inextricably bound up with other forms and practices of mass culture, that it emerged as a combination of existing and innovative elements, and that it was an unusually hybrid medium that only gradually coalesced into something more or less distinct.
