This book will capture the attention of boys and girls. It is a wonderful story about a young girl fighting to be herself despite the gender roles of her era. Lots of adventure and history are included in this captivating story. A must!

5 out of 5 stars History and gender roles as a great story.......2007-05-02

It would have been easy, I suppose, for this to be a "preachy" book about women's role in history: Charlotte Darkey Parkhurst is believed to be the first woman to vote in an American presidential election (albeit illegally, as a man). She chose to live her whole life as a man -- the "Mountain Charley" of California lore -- which either speaks to her inner strength or to the contortions she had to endure to survive in late-1800's America. Whichever it is, Pam Munoz Ryan doesn't "take sides", but weaves an engaging story of a girl who loves horses, the people who befriended and helped her, the difficulties she faced, and the amazing events of her life.

My 10-year-old son got this book at an event where he met illustrator Brian Selznick, but hadn't read it until he picked it for a book report this week. What a fine choice it turned out to be. After he read it (much of it aloud to his mom), we all became interested in the true history of Charlotte "Charley" Darkey Parkhurst. It turns out that he spent the last days of his life not too far from us on what is now Freedom Boulevard in Santa Cruz County, CA. I wonder if the Boulevard is named after the horse of the book's title?

I thought that this was a good book that gave a lot of perspective to what life might have been like for a woman in the 1800's. It had a interesting plot and many challenges for the characters. I was not bored reading this book. I was shocked when she cut off all her hair. Charlotte was a real person who lived in the 1800's. Reading a story that had real people made the story more captivating. It made me feel like the events of the past came to life. I liked it because it was not too long and I could finish it within a week. I thought that the author created lots of different scenerio's for the characters. It really kept my interest. I liked this book and would recommend it for any young teenager to read.

Riding Freedom takes place in a town in the south eastern part of the United States. The book is about a girl's life as she becomes a young woman in the 1800's. Charlotte (the girl) was in the orphanage when she was a kid, because her parents died when she was only two years old. Charlotte's favorite horse, Freedom, died after a race that the two won. Then, Charlotte got banned from the stables and lost her best friend, Hayward. Since she was so miserable, she ran away diguised as a boy (named Charley) with the help of an elderly man named Vern, who worked at the stables in the orphanage. Charlotte then begins to work for a man named Embeezer. She cleaned the stalls and was a stage coach when she was only twelve. She had to work hard for food and shelter. Then, Embeezer, Charlotte, the other workers and horses moved to Rhode Island. Years later, she travelled to California to train horses as a stage coach. But when she was cleaning the hoof of a wild horse, he kicked her in the eye. Then someone took Charlotte to the hospital. She had lost all control of motion in her left eye (that the horse kicked), so she wore an eye patch. Since she had one good eye, all she was able to do was clean the stalls and feed the horses. She no was longer able to work with the wild horses or remain as a stage coach. But Charlotte had not lost hope. She started training two horses by herself, and then started training six horses. She wanted to prove to James (a stage coach at the stables) that she could train six horses, even with one good eye. And she did. So now, Charlotte was riding horses again. Then, one day, it was so stormy out, you couldn't even see the roads. However, she needed to take a group of people to another town. The other workers told it was too dangerous, but she promised that she would get them there safely. So Charlotte started off and came across a bridge. When she reached the bridge, Charlotte tested it to see how sturdy it was (not very). So, she escorted each person once at a time over the bridge until one stubborn man refused budge. Then, Charlotte said, "If you don't want to move, I'll just have to help you move, Sir." Still grumbling, the man to the other side of the bridge. A few minutes later, Charlotte tried to ride the horses over the bridge, but right slab-dab in the middle of the bridge, Charlotte had a flashback of her mother and father dying, as well as the words they said before they died. Moments later, Charlotte zoned back to what was happening, trying not to fall off the bridge, into the rushing water. As soon at the back wheels touched the ground, the bridge collapsed. Everyone cheered and yelled, and the stubborn man said, "You saved my life." After this, everyone heard about what Charlotte had done. They threw coins at her, in hopes that she would run over them. If she did, the thrower of the coin would have good luck. Later on, Charlotte was going to have a passenger who she despised, named Mr. Millshark. She hated him because he was the mean owner at the orphanage. He was the one who had banned her from the stables back at the orphanage. Then, Charlotte felt a "kiddish revenge" going through her body. Charlotte got the wagon stuck in a massive mud pit on purpose. And she then asked him if he would go in the mud and lift up part of the wagon so she could drive the horses to pull it out. But after he was done, she took his boots and hide them from him in order to give them to Embeezer. After she got the people to the stop, she went to look for private property and stables where she could live with Embeezer and her best friend Hayward. One night after she bought the property and house, she saw a sign that said PRIVATE PROPERTY. Then, she turned around and saw a young man petting Charlotte's kittens. She finally noticed, it was Hayward! Hayward stayed at the house for a couple of hours and then he left for a year. But he came back. Months later, Embeezer came to the house. Then, one of Charlotte's horses was going to have a baby. So Embeezer and Charlotte helped the horse give birth to the baby, but there wasn't just one. There were two! After giving birth to the babies, Charlotte and Embeezer found out that one was a girl (filly) and the other was a boy (colt). Finally, Charlotte decided on names for the two foals. The colt was named Vern's Pride and the filly was named Freedom.

    Book Description

The donkey (Equus asinus) is both ancient and mysterious and is called by many names: donkey, burro, wild jack, hinny, and ass. Donkeys and their relative, the mule (a donkey/horse cross), have lived with humans for thousands of years. References to mules date back at least 3,000 years. In the Bible, Genesis 36:24 refers to the mules in the wilderness. In Homer's Odyssey a mule cart transports Princess Nausicaa to the seashore. Mohammed rode upon a mule into battle. Jesus' family on a donkey during the flight into Egypt was a favorite subject of Renaissance painters. By the time of Don Quixote, the donkey was one of the most beloved animals in all of European literature. In Cervantes, the donkey is stubborn and faithful, loving and intelligent. Today, the humble and elegant donkey is becoming a popular companion animal. In the Western states, one can see donkeys grazing peacefully alongside horses on private land. Miniature donkeys are especially popular pets. There is also a growing awareness of donkey abuse and neglect, and donkey rescue societies have sprung up to offer aid. Along with wild horses, wild burros are part of America's heritage. Complete with history, lore, science, ecology, and inspirational stories celebrating the spiritual bond between humans and donkeys, Donkey: The Mystique of Equus Asinus expresses the joy that these saintly creatures with big, furry ears bring to our lives.

    5 out of 5 stars Don't Miss This Book!.......2007-03-17

There are many great things about the book. The images - photos and artwork are outstanding. There are lots of surprising facts about donkeys, mules, and the history of civilization. There is beautiful writing - weaving between the personal and the universal. There is rigorous, careful scholarship, a treasure trove of careful citations to explore. The book has a majestic sweep and keen attention to detail and accuracy. Any one of these aspects of the book would make it worth the modest price. But The truly wonderful thing about this book and the beast it describes, is that it makes you think. The book nudges the reader into unanticipated realms of philosophical reflection. It is deep and rich and wise, but like the burro, humble, sensually centered and honest. You are, for example, reading along - facts about donkeys - and then, all of a sudden, you get something like this: "What do we really know about animals? What can we say with accuracy about ourselves?" Chew on that a while! The book has dozens of such moments, opportunities to step out of the crazy, violent, acquisitive struggles of our historical moment to consider some fundamentals of the mammalian and human condition. It's a great book about a great animal and our connection to the animal world. I own two burros and have long looked to them for council. This book is utterly accurate in its portrayal of the species. It's affectionate and respectful, happliy missing the kitsch and anthropomorphism that most writers bring to books about their favorite animals. Don't miss it.

When I was young and fragile, I lived in the foothills of central California. Across the street from my trailer lived a donkey. His name was Mr. Sissy and he was pissed all of the time, except for Christmas Eve. Why? I never knew but I have my suspicions. I once tried to feed him a carrot, and a sweet carrot mind you, orange and crisp. He would not accept...I tired again...nope, he backed up...I climbed through the fence...he brayed and ATTACKED. I threw the carrot and it did nothing to phaze him! Why me? Now? Years later I read this book and it did nothing to help me understand Mr. Sissy. He is still out there. Some where.

5 out of 5 stars Donkey: the surprise book of 2006.......2006-12-19

I was skeptical when I was handed this book by one of my fellow lawyers in the office. Why on earth would I be interested in a book about, of all subjects, Donkeys, unless it happened to be about the Democratic party? But the images throughout the book were so enticing I decided to invest my time and read this book. Well, what a surprise! I had no idea of the rich history, elogence, complexity, culture and travails of what I had always perceived of as the simple, stupid donkey. And perhaps the most interesting fact of all: if you are referred to as a donkey, (or its more popular pseudonym), is that it is actually a compliment, not an insult! Turns out that donkeys are really smart. Who knew? I would highly recommend this book if you want a fun, interesting, and eye-opening read. How Michael Tobias got on to this subject is baffling; what he did with his "tail" will enchant you.

This is for my daughter who needs some career direction. It is helpful regarding education, who to contact, and expected salary.

My daughter aspires to be a mounted police officer; this particular career description is very vague. The book just suggests that interested parties contact the local law enforcement agency for details . Even though it lacked info regarding mounted police officer, just about all other imaginable careers are listed and described.

    Book Description

Cherry Hill, the best-selling author of Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage, the classic book that has guided thousands of horse owners in establishing farms, now shares her expertise in an important, related topic: equipping the horse farm.

Hill provides in-depth information on every aspect of selecting, maintaining, and using the two most essential pieces of equipment — tractors and horse trailers. Accompanied by photographs and illustrations, she guides the reader through an evaluation of the options available in tractors, from horsepower and transmission options to tires and appearance. A checklist is included detailing what to look for if considering a used tractor.

On trailers, readers will find the answers to all their questions, beginning with the kind of trucks and hookup required for towing various capacity trailers to selecting the appropriate truck hitch. The thorough discussion of trailers details options in floor plans, loading entry, suspension, and accomodations for both horses and owners: tack room, living quarters, windows and vents, lights, feeders, and more.

Hill also discusses the smaller farm implements found on many horse farms, including loaders, discs, harrows, manure spreaders, mowers, post-hole diggers, hay balers, and wagons. Equipping Your Horse Farm is an authoritative, comprehensive handbook that every horse farmer will want to consult before investing in these critical items of farm equipment.

    Book Description

Horses communicate with remarkable accuracy in a language of posture, gesture and sound. They express their needs, wishes and emotions to each other and to the rare human being who understands them. After reading this unprecedented, exciting and up-lifting book, you will understand the equine language. You therefore will know how to recognize:

A happy horse. A frightened horse. An angry horse. A bored horse. A grieving horse. A frustrated horse. A horse horse in pain. A playful horse. A proud horse. An eagerly competitive horse. And many horses more!

Moreover, you will know how to reassure the frightened, calm the angry, comfort the grieving, divert the bored -- and deal with most other human-equine difficulites. You will know how to educate a foal or rehabilitate a rogue. You will know how to look at race horses on their way to the starting gate and differentiate the likely winners from the losers.

You even will know how to buy a horse.

But best of all, you will finally understand what these grand animals are all about, and you will know better than ever before how they (and we) fit into nature's scheme of things.

5 out of 5 stars This book was a fantastic find!.......2007-02-09

Wow! There are 45 horses who are personal friends of mine, and after reading this book, I feel that I know them so much better now! I had already figured out many of their quirks and cute personality traits, and now I have a whole new insight. For example, now I understand that the reason Image is "attitudinal" is because his mama was lead mare when he was born, and he's not about to let anyone forget it. And Casanova is the "class clown" who, if he likes you, will entertain you for hours with his (sometimes annoying) antics like knocking the hat off my head, over and over again -- and if he doesn't like you, don't turn your back on him, or he'll nip you in the butt (but never hard), and by the time you turn around, he's looking the other way, as if to say, "Who did that? Not me!" There are stories in the book to match and top any I have to tell, including a senior horse who liked to play jokes on cows. It's a terrific read and very educational as well. If you are looking to buy a horse, there are tips for selecting one. And for those who enjoy horse racing, there are tips for betting on horses, based on observing their behavior before the race. There's something for everyone in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the short amount of time it takes to read--.......2006-11-27

I personally felt that this book is an awesome introduction to horses and their behavior. No, it does not go into great detail of body language, and it is not for the experienced horseman (I only bought this book because it was required for a class), BUT the book is worth your time. I think that this book offered an excellent perspective on undertanding the horse and why they do what they do. For example, just because the horse isn't doing what you want, doesn't necessarily mean that it's being a "bad" horse- there is an incredible array of things that could be the 'problem'; even though as I said this book will offer no new insights to experienced horsemen and women, it can be a very good reminder of why our horses do what they do. All in all, if you are a beginner to the horse world, pick this book up, and take a few hours to read it, it'll be worth the time and money.

4 out of 5 stars A different view on horses I've read thus this far........2006-06-28

I'm a young horse lover and I spend much more time reading and studying horses in books, magazines, and other sources of trustworthy media than I do actually experiencing these beautiful animals up close. Nor am I lucky enough to be able to regularly work with them. I recently received "The Body Language of Horses" and I have blazed through this small book and found that it is very informative, observant, and suitable towards an aspiring horsewoman or horseman. It gives out clear, though thick, digestible pieces of horse psychology and body language offering ways to understand and `connect' with the equine. I give it a rating of four stars out of five because there is further searching in different books about horse language I have yet to discover and the horses themselves.
    Thanks!
    Sarah

3 out of 5 stars The Body Language of Horses: Revealing the Nature..........2006-02-23

This is an excellent resource for a person who hasn't had much exposure to horses or has trouble interpreting the meaning of equine body language and sounds. Although, it was well written, and made some excellent points, it seemed quite basic and I didn't come to any new revalations about horses that would help or change my relationships with them.

2 out of 5 stars States the obvious and strays off-topic........2004-04-16

I was rather disappointed with this book for several reasons. First and foremost, the bulk of the book does not, as the title would have us believe, focus on the body language of horses. A couple of chapters devote themselves to brief descriptions of horse behavior under different circumstances (when happy, angry, frightened, bored, tired, hot, cold, hungry, thirsty, etc.), but the largest sections of the book concern curing problem horses and training foals. At the end there is a chapter on observing the body language of racehorses in order to pick winners, and two appendices on how to buy a horse.

Not only does the book stray from it's purported topic, but the information that IS given about equine body language is so basic and obvious that any true horseperson would already know it, and any aspiring horseperson could learn it all in a matter of a few weeks spent around the creatures. Of course a nervous horse will work up a sweat, a bored horse will get mouthy, and a horse that is irritated by a fly will swish its tail and twitch its skin. There are really only two forseeable uses, in my mind, for this book. The first is as a reference for those who know next to nothing about horses and wish to learn. The second, a slightly different version of the first, is as a guide to non-equestrian racegoers in order to pick winning horses on which to place their bets (and this is not surefire or guaranteed in any way, since pre-race behavior is only one of many factors that determines the outcome of a race).

The book is also considerably old, and a bit dated. It was written and first published in 1980, more than two decades ago. While the basic behavior of horses hasn't changed in that time, much else in the horse world has, including attitudes toward the care and training of horses. There are now many more effecting training methods than those presented here, and one passage in the book even alarmed me. Though they pronounce it a "dubious last resort," the authors nevertheless included the following method for "[teaching] manners to a resistant horse":

". . . dramatic effects are obtained by striking the animal over the poll bone with a fragile wine bottle filled with a slush of sand and warm water. When the bottle breaks and the warm, moist substance dribbles down its head, the savage horse becomes a trembling wreck. A gestured threat to repeat the treatment is usually enough to terminate subsequent misbehavior" (pg. 49).

While this is the only place in the book where the authors propose such blatantly inappropriate methods, I nevertheless cannot give a vote of confidence to anyone that would condone striking an animal with a wine bottle to elicit compliance. In addition, the authors make a great many generalizations about equine behavior and do not allow much leeway for differences in personality. As any person who spends much time around horses knows, one can be vastly different from the next. I said earlier that this book had two conceivable uses, but even for those I would not recommend purchasing this book. There are other books out there on the behavior and training of horses that are more current, more accurate, and more effective.

3 out of 5 stars Great introductory book.......2004-03-12

I took a chance on the book when I saw it in a discount bin, and glad I did. The major fault I find with the book is that it never gives more than a paragraph or two of attention to any of the individual animals. It does cover a wide variety of animals, and tells more about the hardships the group had to undergo instead of the individual acts of heroism. My recommendation is to pick up the book (the authors percentage of this book goes to a statue fund for war animals) and use the information found in it to do more research on the subject on the net or through other books..., some of which are mentioned as great references within this book.

          Book Description

Amazing real-life tales of animals — combined with delightfully surreal illustrations — make for a captivating book of a different stripe.

Whoever heard of a horse who lived in a house (while its owners lived next door)? Or two donkeys who had a marriage feast? Or an official spying cat who was wired for sound? These stories and many more — all quite strange, all very true — come from newspaper reports around the world. With paintings by Kathy Osborn hinting at magic realism and journalist Gail Ablow’s wonderfully witty text, this fascinating collection has much to say about creatures ranging from hippos to humans, who may in fact be the strangest animals of all.
