Book Description

The diptych––comprising two hinged panels that can be opened and closed like a book––was prevalent in Netherlandish art and depicted subjects ranging from secular portraiture to religious personages and stories. This lavishly illustrated book, the first ever to examine this painting format, examines approximately forty Netherlandish diptychs from the 15th and 16th centuries. Featuring magnificent works by Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden, Hans Memling, and Hugo van der Goes, among others, the book covers a wide variety of topics, including painting techniques, workshop practice, and the art market in the Netherlands of the time.
With fascinating discussions on each of the featured paintings, Prayers and Portraits reunites a number of diptychs that have long been separated. Essays examine the works in the context of contemporary texts and religious practices in northern Europe, incorporating new technical information and research. They also offer invaluable insights into the social status and aspirations of the sitters.
The exhibition is organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, and the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp, in association with the Harvard University Art Museums, Cambridge.

5 out of 5 stars Man and God.......2007-08-11

This is a beautiful book, replete with high-quality illustrations and in-depth studies of all the works displayed in the 2007 exhibition it illustrates. It is a treasure trove of information on early Flemish painting, stressing technical as well as stylistic details, recalling the historical context of every work and showing how the image of man was, little by little, superseding that of god.

This book is destined to become a collector's piece. Undoubtedly one of the best recent art publications, as far as illustrations and scientific research are concerned.

    Book Description

This volume is one of several that examine the National Gallery of Art's distinguished collection of decorative arts. The group treated here is composed primarily of works acquired from the Widener Collection, and amplified by holdings acquired from the Kress family. Included are more than
eighty Medieval, Renaissance, and historicizing objects in a wide variety of media, encompassing metalwork, stained glass, enamels, ceramics, and jewels. Among the highlights are a Limoges reliquary chasse, a Mosan lion aquamanile, thirty-eight pieces in a cohesive group of Italian maiolica, three
of the very rare French pottery objects known as "Saint-Porchaire," and, the centerpiece of the collection, the Suger chalice, an ancient sardonyx cup to which the Abbot Suger added a bejewelled golden setting in the twelfth century.

Like other volumes in the Systematic Catalogue of the National Gallery of Art Collections, Western Decorative Arts includes a thoroughly researched entry for each object, together with an artist biography, up-to-date bibliography, and a technical analysis.

    Book Description

The first three decades of the sixteenth century represent, visually and intellectually, the most exciting phase of the Renaissance in Venice—when Giorgione and the young Titian, together with Sebastiano del Piombo, Palma Vecchio, and others, were working alongside the older master Giovanni Bellini. This beautiful book presents an innovative survey of sixty Venetian Renaissance paintings of the caliber of Bellini and Titian’s Feast of the Gods in Washington and Giorgione’s Laura and Three Philosophers in Vienna.
Unlike previous surveys of the period, this book refrains from dividing up the artists represented and instead explores the interrelationships between them. Through a series of thematic sections, the authors trace the rise of secular subjects—pastoral landscapes, female nudes, and romantic portraits—and the transformation of religious ones as well as innovations in style and technique. Cutting across genres, the book also focuses on the overarching themes of music, love, and time.
Featuring essays by leading scholars, detailed entries on some of the most renowned pictures of sixteenth-century Italy, and revealing technical information, Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, and the Renaissance of Venetian Painting is an essential volume to own.

5 out of 5 stars The Renaissance at its finest........2007-01-11

A must for the student and lover of the Renaissance and Venice in particular.

5 out of 5 stars High water mark of renaissance painting.......2006-07-29

This remarkable show (and catalogue) is a summary of Venetian painting from 1500 to 1530, allowing a side by side comparison of the work of Bellini, Giorgione, and Titian in what was one of Venice's astonishing high water marks of artistic creativity.

Once you have been bitten by the bug, these paintings are with you for good. Seeing this work firsthand, one can't help be seduced by the ravishing, luminous beauty light and layers of glazing that makes these paintings unique. The stillness in some of these works suggest the real subject here is light and color -- something these Venetians seem to have captured like no other group of artists.

The reproductions in the catalogue are quite good, and there are a very generous amount of close detail shots of the paintings too -- something particularly useful in illustrating the intricacy of detail in Giorgione's work. The essays are interesting, but my favorite is one I almost missed after the technical photographs of xrays in the back: an essay which describes how the Venetian painters were at a remarkable crossroads of shared experimentation in color including glassmakers, creators of fabric dyes, and other tradesmen that contributed to a new world of color effects in paint. For example the painters would use finely ground glass mixed into the oils to give the glazes a more bright, refractory quality.

This is a captivating show and a great catalogue to accompany it.

As the title suggests, this book is a wonderful guide to the spiritual approach taken in the conception and planning of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. It shows the cultural approach to the collections within the museum, and in the design of the museum. It provides a window into the Native American culture. It also provides a brief history of the Mall, and its design. I wish I had read this book before I had visited the museum. Now, I will just have to return and pay more attention, this time, to the design elements of the museum, the entrance to the museum, and the grounds surrounding it, as well as the collections.

    Book Description

Few individuals have exerted as profound an influence on 20th-century American art and culture as Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946). This luxurious two-volume boxed set is the definitive catalogue of the Alfred Stieglitz Collection of Photographs at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, the most complete Stieglitz holding in existence, donated to the gallery by his widow, artist Georgia O'Keeffe.

Numbering 1,642 photographs, the collection represents the full range of the master photographer's work-from early studies made in Europe, to views of the majestic New York skyline, to incomparable intimate portraits of O'Keeffe. Coinciding with a major traveling exhibition and providing complete scholarly apparatus and a chronology, this sumptuous volume demonstrates how Stieglitz absorbed the most advanced artistic concepts of his time into photography and transformed the medium forever.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A lot of enjoyment and learning.......2007-03-22

For this collection O'Keefe chose the best print of every mounted photo in Steiglitz's collection at the time of his death. I just flip through ten or twelve pages a night. As another reviewer said, they are small. But I just get close and enjoy. This is an unparalleled opportunity to fathom the mind of a master. If you want Steiglitz to be your teacher this is the way.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding set, fine quality reproductions.......2005-11-01

This is a major contribution to the field of artistic photography and art history, and frankly, I am not sure what the previous reviewer was looking at or for when giving this award-winning set one out of five stars (it was rated "outstanding art publication of the year" by the Art Libraries Society of North America in 2002).

Greenough's 2-volume set is a standout in numerous ways. For starters, it is the first retrospective work that has attempted to establish some kind of chronological order to Stieglitz's photographs (many of his major works were never dated previously). Why is this important? Stieglitz was extremely influential not only as an artist but as a technician, introducing new photo cropping and printing methods at a time when photography was just starting out as a field of study. Without dates for his photographs, it had previously been impossible to determine for certain whether Stieglitz was employing (or improving upon) techniques that were already out there, or if he was forging ahead into unknown territory.

The scholarship undertaken here is impressive: in addition to the dating of all the material, Greenough provides copious notes about the images, including invaluable information about the reproduction process. There is a detalied appendix, bibliography, index, and concordances, as well as information of other Stieglitz photographs in other collections.

Apart from the scholarship, however, what makes this set standout is the quality and quantity of the images. There are over 1600 photographs in this set, and only about a third of them had ever been reproduced before. Many of the images here are print variants that Stieglitz produced from the same negative, showing how he experimented with printing (using carbon, platinum, gelatin silver, and palladium among other materials) as well as cropping/orientating/mounting of his prints. These images give us a more complete picture Stieglitz's thought processes in terms of his art, his experimental nature, and the methods he employed in presenting his vision to the world.

    Book Description

The National Gallery of Art in our nation's capital houses one of the foremost collections of European and American painting in the world, covering more than seven centuries of art-from Byzantine to contemporary-and numbering more than 3,000 works. This sumptuous volume gathers together some of the greatest art in the world, nearly 400 masterworks of the collection, from Leonardo da Vinci's Ginevra de' Benci to Jackson Pollock's magisterial Number 1, 1950 (Lavender Mist) .

The model for this volume is John Walker's National Gallery of Art, Washington (1984), hailed in its time as a landmark publication. The new book features stunning reproductions and enlightening commentary by John Hand for a new selection of works, including acquisitions of the past 20 years by artists such as Cézanne, Degas, Matisse, Newman, Rothko, and Van Gogh. Shown together with the masterpieces from the Gallery's core collections-by Botticelli, Corot, Giotto, Goya, Homer, Manet, Picasso, Raphael, Rembrandt, Renoir, Rubens, Titian, Van Eyck, Vermeer, and many others-the entire group testifies to the growth and remarkable quality of the nation's art collection. AUTHOR BIO: John Oliver Hand is curator of northern Renaissance paintings at the National Gallery of Art. Earl A. Powell III is the director of the National Gallery of Art.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent selection of works, excellent reproductions.......2007-03-17

I purchased the earlier book by John Walker very inexpensively (used) and was disappointed to recieve it musty and in bad condition. Nevertheless I found the book enjoyable enough to throw that one away and try again with this edition at a much greater price. It was worth every penny spent on both. The selection of works displayed and the quality of the illustrations are both excellent. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is that many of the illustrations are half page in size even though the entire page is devoted to them - to waste so much space instead of making the illustrations larger is sinful.

4 out of 5 stars Good Survey of Paintings in the National Gallery.......2004-10-19

This book presents a survey of paintings in the National Gallery, Washington DC. It more or less replaces the old volume written by the late John Walker, the former director of the institution. That book was out of date and didn't include paintings which have been acquired over the last several years. The new book brings the gallery's holdings up to date. The reproductions are very good (but not great) and the commentary is better than average. Unlike the Walker book, this book is a bit more selective and doesn't try to include the kitchen sink. My major complaint is that the book is a bit thin when it comes to the museum's superb early Italian paintings. There is also too much space devoted to what is essentially contemporary work which has not truly stood the test of time. For example, 10 pages (!) are devoted to the dull Barnett Newman. Another problem is that the book doesn't discuss the condition of the artwork. I'll wager that many of the paintings reproduced in this book which look virtually brand new are in fact heavily restored and "touched up" by the gallery's conservation department.

      Book Description

The National Gallery's collection of seventeenth-century Flemish paintings, although numbering fewer than sixty works, is exceptional in quality. At its core are major examples by the two greatest masters of the period, Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck, artists whose renown extended to Italy, Spain, Germany, France, and England. The large-scale history paintings and the portraits that Rubens and Van Dyck painted of their aristocratic patrons once commanded spaces similar to the grand, wood-paneled galleries in which they now hang. We are fortunate to be able to exhibit these old master paintings to such good effect. The collection also contains choice smaller-scale still lifes, genre scenes, and landscapes by other important Flemish masters, including Osias Beert the Elder, Adriaen Brouwer, Jan Brueghel the Elder, and David Teniers the Younger. Many of these paintings benefited from recent conservation treatment during the preparation of this catalogue, and the resulting new technical information is published here for the first time. The extensive commentaries also include new information about provenance, and about the style, dating, and the place of these paintings within the cultural milieu in which the artists worked. The catalogue also includes artists' biographies, an appendix of artists' signatures and monograms, and a general index.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Adventure in D. C........2001-04-16

Grandma is taking a little girl and her brother to the National Gallery of Art. As they walk in, the little girl hands her balloon to a nice photographer to hold for her, since balloons are not allowed inside. But as the three begin their tour of the gallery, the balloon comes loose and sails away..... You Can't Take a Balloon Into the National Gallery is a creative and inventive picture book that will entrance and mesmerize youngsters of all ages with its busy, expressive artwork, great attention to detail and famous Americans hidden in the pictures. The Preiss sister's marvelous and clever pen and ink illustrations, with bright color used only to highlight the chaos of the balloon's trip, parallels the tour inside the gallery, as life imitates art and art imitates life. This book includes a wonderfully detailed map of the balloon's route through D.C. and an answer key full of fun facts and historical notes for their hidden faces, at the end. It's impossible to open this book without finding something new and exciting that you've never seen before. For hours of fun, You Can't Take a Balloon Into the National Gallery is an adventure that will delight and amuse everyone in the family.

      5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!.......2001-03-10

As I have just written in my 5-star review of "You Can't Take a Balloon to The Metropolitan Museum,": The really good news is that the Preiss sisters HAVE written another book and are working on a third. The second in this series, You Can't Take a Balloon to The National Gallery, is also fabulous. In fact, it is so good that, up until 2 weeks ago, my 3 year old would point out about twice a week that we had not been to the "Natural Gallery" when I asked her what we should do that day.

The only thing that changed since then is that I took her and her 1 year old sister to Washington last week, using the book as a guide book. If you think you like these books now, try using them as a template for a trip with your children! WOW!!!!!! What a wonderful way to get them ready for a trip and what a wonderful thing to carry the book with you, comparing what you are seeing to what you have read!!!! How great to go back to the hotel and see what you have seen and are going to see!!!! How great to get home and have an instant scrap book!!!!

With this experience behind us, we also can't wait until next Spring when You Can't Take a Balloon to The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston is scheduled to come out!

5 out of 5 stars Wild Adventure is key to Life and Learning.......2000-08-02

A profound success on many fronts. I'm totally taken by its creativity, cleverness, and messages. This book has adventure, drama, historical details -- I love the "Faces from History" part (plus the learning within them), as offered ever so playfully! At the same time, "You Can't Take A Balloon..." is warm and filled with great joy. If all learning was presented so refreshingly, we'd have a different world!

      5 out of 5 stars Art On a Child's Level.......2000-07-17

      This book is brilliant!

The method of walking through the National Gallery of Art and through the streets of our nation's capitol has brought both into our home at a level that can be shared with my children.

        Book Description

The National Gallery of Art collection of Italian fifteenth-century paintings, the finest in any American museum, has not been published in its entirety since the 1979 Catalogue of Italian Paintings by Fern Rusk Shapley. In addition to Leonardo's Ginevra de' Benci and the Adoration of the Magi by Fra Angelico and Fra Filippo Lippi, paintings by Domenico Veneziano, Castagno, Sassetta, Mantegna, Giovanni Bellini, Perugino, Botticelli, and Ghirlandaio make this a book of major masters of the Renaissance.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-27

One word will suffice - 'excellent'. In scholarship, clarity of writing, illustrations and design, it is excellent. The price is also unbelievably good for a publication of such quality. If I have a quibble, it is that it is too heavy for easy handling. Perhaps two volumes would have been better. But that is nothing compared with what is! Congratulations to the whole team who produced it. Nothing better in the world today.
