Dr.Malloy's book reflects the common problems an engineer would face while designing a plastic part. His book takes all the possible design problems that one might not even expect. He deserves 10,0000000**********'s.

    5 out of 5 stars A "must have" for design/manufacturing engineers.......2000-02-12

I teach Product Design Engineering at Ohio State and I can honestly say that Bralla is absolutely the best single reference for working designers and manufacturing engineers that I've found. An incredible compendium of useful info on just about any manufacturing process you can think of, and plenty you HAVEN'T thought of, plus chapters on Design for Assembly, materials, economic considerations - you name it. The book is a bit pricey, but considering the amount of useful information packed into it, it's a steal. Bralla far exceeds McGraw-Hill's regrettably low standards for their handbooks - this one is a keeper!

    Book Description

This illustrated fabric dictionary explores the fascinating and satisfying characteristics of the multitude of fabrics available today. Comprehensive lists of fabrics for many uses are given, and over 600 names and terms are illustrated and/or explained. It provides a place for actual fabric swatches, and gives information about mounting swatches. Cerlox binding allows the book to lie flat when open. A comprehensive overview starts the book; it explains how to use the glossary, fiber families, fabric weights, and end-use categories. A section called “Fabric Files” follows, with notes on mounting swatches, alphabetically-listed fabric files, and references and resources. This book is an excellent resource for use on the job for those in textiles, textile marketing, and the fashion industry because of its clever layout and wealth of information.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Wonderful Reference.......2004-03-13

Fantastic book! One that is extremely useful and one that I take everywhere with me. Perfect for new designers acquiring fabric sense. I know several firms where this book is a staple reference guide. A+++++

3 out of 5 stars Good Text, But No Color.......2000-06-28

I was a little disappointed that all of the pictures were blackand white. In order for this book to be useful to me, I would have topay [approx. $20.] plus shipping and handling to get the actual swatches used in this reference book.

The text seemed to be very thorough and all fabric types are covered. For the price, I would have expected color photos of the swatches since it is difficult to judge texture from black and white. If you don't mind investing [more money] for the swatches, you'll be happy with this book.

    Book Description

    • Exciting medium, new formulations: perfect for crafters at all skill levels
    • Award-winning, best-selling author with great crafts credentials
    • First book on resin that provides detailed techniques and varied super-appealing projects

Resin jewelry is made from liquid plastic that magically turns solid when a hardener is added. Pretty cool! The popularity of these resins for jewelry making has soared with the introduction of easy-to-mix, low-odor products, ideal for crafters. Now best-selling author Sherri Haab shows how to put the miracle of modern technology to work making necklaces, bangles, bracelets, pins, earrings, and rings. Projects range from simple to sophisticated, from Bakelite-style heart pins to faux amber earrings to glitter gem bracelets, from scrimshaw bracelets to cloisonné pins to transparent resin necklaces backed with gold leaf. Packed with tips on tools, supplies, finishing, and creating special effects, including ideas on combining resins with polymer clay, The Art of Resin Jewelry is a beautiful and practical introduction to an exciting craft.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Safety first.......2007-09-21

You must use protective gear when using resin products but the precautions are worth the results. Sherri shows you how to use epoxy, polyurethane and polyester resins to imbed candy, flowers and found objects to make jewelry elements. You can make imitation amber by including bugs and vegetable matter in resins and make amber's "sun spangles" by mixing in gold or bronze leaf. It's pretty exciting to see how Sherri uses a combination of black polymer clay, very fine glitter, Pearl Ex(tm) powdered pigments and Envirotex Lite® epoxy to make a light-weight cabochon that looks just like dichroic glass.

When using resins, use NIOSH-approved protective gear (respirator and nitrile or butyl gloves) and keep away from food preparation areas. Always read the resin product's Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) prior to using it. When drilling or sanding resin pieces, you must wear a dust mask. Other than standard beading tools and findings, an embossing gun will come in handy to get rid of air bubbles during the resin's drying process. You can use ready-made rubber molds or use Sherri's techniques to make your own molds from an existing piece or your original polymer clay sculpture.

If you already enjoy working with polymer clay, working with resins will expand your creativity and this book will help to get you (safely) started.

4 out of 5 stars Choice of art pieces.......2007-09-09

This book is a wonderful resource for anyone interested in making resin jewlery. Its in depth and as always Sherri Haab explains in detail just "how to" do it. My disappointment is with the pieces of jewlery she chose to create. There are only a few that I would duplicate. That said if you are wanting to learn this medium then buy the book.

4 out of 5 stars Great all-round resin jewellery book.......2007-02-10

I am really happy with this book. It has a great selection of projects and lots of different types of resin jewellery. Lots of pictures. I haven't made anything yet but it seems really easy to follow.

5 out of 5 stars this book is great.......2007-01-10

Sherri Haab can always be relied to to produce great books with funky projects that you actually want to make. Can't fault this one at all - fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book For Inspiring Artists.......2007-01-10

I am speaking on behalf of my company (Fibreglass & Resin Sales), we sell this book to many customers, although some of my staff have also purchased the book. It has great, handy ideas for those who love their crafts, and even those who are new in the craft world! If you interested in Resin Art, I would recommend this book to get you going!!!

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very Effective Tutorial.......2007-09-10

This is the best tutorial for any software I have ever found. You don't realize the brilliance of it until you have gone through at least a few of the lessons. It's interesting because they don't explain "This is what you are about to learn" -- they just tell you how to create projects. But, after a while you realize you ARE learning! I understand what another reviewer has said, the presentation isn't great. It is clearly a laser-printed book with a hand-written CD. But the projects in the book are professional. What you create looks fabulous, and if the objective is to learn the software, then they achieve that with flying colors.

      1 out of 5 stars Color Please?.......2007-05-02

For nearly $80 I expected a little more. It looks like someone used a copier to make copies of the pages and then spiral bound it together. It looks like something I could have done!
Then I get a burned CD that's been handwritten on? Honestly I don't think it's much to ask that for $80 the book at least look like it was put together professionally. Other than that I have not gone through the content but I am extremely dissapointed in the presentation of the material.

5 out of 5 stars Quark is Easy to Learn.......2007-03-21

I came here specifically to write a good review about the QuarkXpress
training book from Noble Desktop. It's great! I'm not sure why the
gentleman below didn't learn how to put together a book, since this
workbook has step by step instructions on how to create a 120-page
book! And it's amazingly easy. Quark is a pretty easy program, I just
needed someone to walk me through all the steps without having to
figure them out myself. This book showed me how to do simple things,
but also major things like a magazine cover, a few different magazine
articles, a poster, and of course the 120-page book. I highly
recommend it, and I plan on getting Noble Desktop's InDesign book as
      well.

3 out of 5 stars QuarkXpress 7 Step by Step Training.......2007-02-19

If someone wants to learn QuarkXpress for the purposes illustrated, this is a good way to accomplish a first time get up to speed ability. If on the other hand, if one wants to learn the program for the purpose of putting together a book, as I am doing, this product will only be a waste of time. I have found an array of eBooks that give me what I need without having to learn all the features of this extraordinary program, and believe it or not, I am now suffering from the program not wanting to export to pdf. So, I have abandoned QuarkXpress, and I am now using Adobe InDesign now for my DTP needs.

5 out of 5 stars Great intro to Quark.......2006-12-13

The text book here presented as well as the hands on class are very clear & consice, taking you truly step by step through the learning process. They only thing better than this book would be taking the class in person at Nobel Desktop's facility in New York City. Both the book & the class are worth every penny and minute of your time. Great investment in your future as a graphic designer!

Well written and easy to read and comprehend. Emphasis is on understanding basic principles, not on detailed mathematical analysis and proofs. It was last updated more than 20 years ago, but is remarkably current. It is the textbook for the university level music technology electronics course I teach.

If you want to know how to design stuff that works without getting bogged down in the kind of math that gives most people the sweats, BUY THIS BOOK.

Yes, some of it is showing it's age, but even those bits have an enormous amount of clever design insights and very cool solutions to non obvious problems.

In short, whether electronics is a hobby or a career, you cannot do without this book on your shelf, preferably close at hand.

3 out of 5 stars Helpful? Reference, yes. Teaching/learning, no........2007-06-01

I've used this book for two quarters at ohio university in physics 272 and 273. Other than the fact that the lab courses doen't do much in the way of actual teaching, this text and it's sarcasm is awful.
It does ask a lot of questions, but as a teaching text for an introductory set of labs, it is terrible. You may think I'm just too stupid to benefit from sarcastic questions with no material in the text to answer them, but if that is the case, you are probably some nerd type that knows very little in the way of education.
I'll be selling this set of texts, which is unusual, since as a teacher, I generally keep all my texts for future reference (even my introduction to particle physics by Das, and my quantum mechanics text by Ira Levine)...save money and use google, or wikipedia you will find more detailed answers.

      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-03-09

This book came well recommended and has not been a disappointment. It is not in the style of anything written by the ARRL for learning LRC and RF material, nor had it been presented as such.

The information is very detailed and very complete. Some areas are a little devoid of extensive material but the reader should be easily guided to finding material that will complete their education.

I found nothing that was inaccurate and that says a lot for any technical publication. It covers most of the basics and does it very well. If you are looking for extremely detailed information in any particular subject, this is not the book for you.

Do not omit this book from your library. It is a de facto standard and deserves a lot of respect.

        Book Description

The first textbook on the design of FRP for structural engineering applications

Composites for Construction is a one-of-a-kind guide to understanding fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) and designing and retrofitting structures with FRP. Written and organized like traditional textbooks on steel, concrete, and wood design, it demystifies FRP composites and demonstrates how both new and retrofit construction projects can especially benefit from these materials, such as offshore and waterfront structures, bridges, parking garages, cooling towers, and industrial buildings.

The code-based design guidelines featured in this book allow for demonstrated applications to immediately be implemented in the real world. Covered codes and design guidelines include ACI 440, ASCE Structural Plastics Design Manual, EUROCOMP Design Code, AASHTO Specifications, and manufacturer-published design guides. Procedures are provided to the structural designer on how to use this combination of code-like documents to design with FRP profiles.

In four convenient sections, Composites for Construction covers:
        * An introduction to FRP applications, products and properties, and to the methods of obtaining the characteristic properties of FRP materials for use in structural design
        * The design of concrete structural members reinforced with FRP reinforcing bars
        * Design of FRP strengthening systems such as strips, sheets, and fabrics for upgrading the strength and ductility of reinforced concrete structural members
        * The design of trusses and frames made entirely of FRP structural profiles produced by the pultrusion process
