Book Description

Now in its ninth edition, Phonics Pathways (with help from Dewey the Bookworm™) teaches students of all ages the rudiments of phonics and spelling with an efficient, practical, and foolproof method. Written in an easy-to-use format, Phonics Pathways is organized by sounds and spelling patterns. The patterns are introduced one at a time and slowly built into syllables, words, phrases, and sentences. Printed in a large 8-1/2" x 11" lay-flat format for easy photocopying, Phonics Pathways is filled with illustrative examples, word lists, and practice readings that are 100 percent decodable. While appropriate for K-2 emergent readers, this award-winning book has also been used successfully with adolescent and adult learners, as well as second language learners and students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia.

1 out of 5 stars Tedious, inappropriate for young children.......2007-09-19

I'm a big fan of phonics and I know this book has gotten rave reviews, but we have found it extremely tedious for the following reasons:
1. There are entirely too many words on each page. My six year old boy is overwhelmed every time I open the book. Looking at the endless lists of disconnected words has actually sent him into tears. He is able to get the concept without so much repetition.
2. The "stories" are just nonsensical strings of words, and bring no innate satisfaction for either of us when he gets all the words correct. It is not that difficult to create sentences that are interesting to read.
3. The quotes of the cute little bookworm are too abstract or involve concepts that a six year old (at least my six year old) cannot grasp without quite a bit of explaining.
4. We were still trying to make this book work when we came to page 116, where plural nouns, singular verbs, the possessive s and Xs were all thrown together. Surely in a book of this page count, these major concepts could have been separated out. (Nouns like "ducks" are included in the same lists as verbs like "hums" under the heading "plurals" -- try explaining to your child why "hums" is plural! Of course it's not . . . .) Much to my son's relief, we will do our phonics without this book.

5 out of 5 stars She covers the basics in an organized, easy to follow fashion.......2007-08-24

Although I am still in the beginning stages of teaching my child to read, I really like Delores HIskes' approach in this book. She starts out with consonants, then blends them with the vowels to teach children the short vowel sounds. All along and along she includes short games which are simple to create and my child really enjoys. I reccommend this book!

4 out of 5 stars It's like a vitamin - very good for you, but rather dull.......2007-06-18

I taught my daughter to read with Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. My daughter was very successful with that, and upon completion I turned to Phonics Pathways to continue her instruction.

That was almost 10 months ago, and over the course of this year we have come very close to working through the entire book.

Pros: Phonics Pathways is very complete. It can take a child that reads nothing up to about a 4th or 5th grade level of reading. It includes more complicated phonics patterns that other books do not cover. It teaches spelling rules and I anticipate using this as a spelling reference as my child gets older. It is very easy to use. We basically read a page a day, repeating if a certain page is tricky. It includes games that could be motivating to some students, although requiring prep on the part of the parent.

Con: Dry, dry, dry! My child loved the zany stories in Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. When we started Phonics Pathways, she wanted to go back to her old book because Phonics Pathways is not nearly so entertaining. While she thinks Dewey the Bookworm is cute, his inspirational sayings don't do much for her. If my child was a reluctant reader, I think we'd have to scrap Phonics Pathways and find something else that was more fun.

This book does work and is a good reference to have on hand, but like most things in education, it will not be the best fit for every child.

5 out of 5 stars Simple, Straightforward and Effective.......2007-04-06

I've taught both of my children to read using this book and I recommend it to other parents all of the time. In just a few minutes a day you can help your child learn to read well and/or solidify their emerging skills. Don't spend a fortune on fancy "edutainment" software programs. Get this instead and cuddle with your child on the sofa and watch their skills grow.

This would also be good for children with dyslexia or adults who need help.

5 out of 5 stars Very Pleased!.......2007-03-18

I've been using this book for my current kindegartner for about a year now. We're up to page 50 as of today (when you can start using readers if you really want to) and I'm just tickled with the progress made. We started out extremely casual and laid back until the last month or two. We've been working with it every weekday for the last month or so. His speech issues as well as his phonics comprehension have dramatically improved in the last 6mo alone! I love how this is a self-contained reading system. It isn't a box of assorted 'things' and it can be used for pretty much an age and any level reader. Fairly straight-forward and easy to use.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars NOT A BEGINNING.......2007-06-13

THIS IS A VERY GOOD BOOK BUT NOT ONE FOR THE "AVERAGE" BASIC BEGINNER. WAS HOPING FOR A STEP BY STEP.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book for Figure Drawing.......2007-03-17

Lots of good excercises for those new to drawing the human figure.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Top 5 figure drawing books in the Classical Tradition.......2004-04-27

When I review DRAWING books, the first question I ask is, "Is this for BEGINNERS?" Because I feel an obligation to the book buyer to provide good information, and also to prevent a beginning student from being discouraged, and feeling that they are defective, or ....just cannot get it.

It does not seem to occur to the buyer that many authors just cannot teach. Instinct seems to suggest that that if book gets published, it must contain credible instruction by someone who knows how to teach, and everyone seems to desire to cash in on the Big Bucks market of HOW-TO-DRAW. It may seem surprising that this is just not so. Perhaps as many as half of all drawing books are not very good for beginners. I know. I've gotten familiar with most of the books on the market, and I know what I'm looking for in good instruction.

I've purchased over 25 drawing books, and own the most popular titles of the HOW-TO-DRAW genre. I rate Famous Artists School's "How To Draw The Human Figure" as one of the top 5 books on figure drawing. At this price it's a bargain anyway. Using the classical method of representing the body as cylinders in basic outline, this book covers not just static models, but representation of the human figure in dynamic motion. I consider this a "must have" book that cuts through all nonsense with no wasted pages.

Why do I consider this book so successful, at only 98 pages, when I call other books of the same size or 20 pages larger a failure as a drawing book? Famous Artist's school focuses only on basic figure drawing, whereas most other drawing books move on to cover other material such as composition, perspective, color etc., which shortchanges the buyer on Basic Figure Drawing. By keeping focus, this book is very useful to any beginner. At this price, it's a bargain also!

5 out of 5 stars Very usefull book for begginers.......2000-11-21

With easy, steb by step method, this book guide you through fascinating skills of drawing a human figure. It also contains basic anatomy, proportions... This book realy offers more value for your money.

5 out of 5 stars Happy with the book.......2006-11-03

Very nelpful in organizing a sucessful play. Eliminates or reduces the 'fine art of forgetting something'.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!.......2006-10-20

This book is very practical and easy to understand. Parts might be a little basic, but they're definitely helpful. This book was recommended for a Directing 2 class in which Directors in Rehearsal (Cole), The Open Door (Brook), and A Director Prepares (Bogart) were all required. Which one do you think I read first, AND w/ the greatest of ease? Great for those just beginning to direct as well as teachers.

5 out of 5 stars I wish...........2002-07-09

I wish someone had recommended this book before I directed half a dozen musicals and learned its contents the hard way...trial and error. While the information is largely common sense, the organization saves the time of having to figure it out yourself. I recommend it highly...especially for school and community theatre.

5 out of 5 stars Everything a director needs to know gathered in one place........2001-05-15

I discovered this book through a fellow theatre professor and was immediately impressed with its scope of information. So impressed, in fact, that I'm planning to adopt it as the textbook for an advanced directing course I teach that culminates with the production of a one-act play.

The authors have covered everything a director needs to know, from selecting the play through rehearsals, peformances, and marketing. This book would be especially helpful for high school/community theatre directors, or those in similar situations where the director is expected to assume some of the responsibilites usually handled by a producer. (The sample forms are especially good for these organizations.)

Although not a substitute for a more thorough book on the pure basics of directing (blocking, composition, etc.), this is an excellent supplement that reviews those basics and enhances them with elements that often aren't covered in directing classes but are faced in production (putting together program copy, for example). Although I've been directing professionally for over 12 years, I immediately ordered a copy for myself after examining it.

4 out of 5 stars THE CHECKLISTS ARE WORTH THE PRICE ALONE.......2000-12-04

While I didn't actually get any practicle directing techniques from this kit, I wasn't actually looking for any either. Anyone who thinks they can learn to direct from a book, shouldn't be directing in the first place. The kit has several checklists and forms that are a great resource for the new and more experienced director. It also serves as a solid outline of what is or should be involved with directing. It won't teach you how to direct, but then again, that's not the intent.

5 out of 5 stars Never Out of Style Tried and True.......2006-09-07

Even though the Famous Artists School was found in many publications when I was a child growing up, it still is hard to beat their tried and true processes from step by step methods to the finished product. If you want simple, comprehensible and easily learned methodology of creating animal form.....this is a must have book. You learn the basic form here and add the individual spirit and media to your subject. I am glad I was able to find the Famous Artist School Step-By-Step Method Books....and for the price it is hard to be without.

5 out of 5 stars How to Draw Animals from the Famous Artist's School Collecti.......2003-04-13

There are many approaches that artists working in the 'furry' or anthromorphic field can take to their characters. Some place animal-like heads on top of what are essentially human bodies (the egyptian god approach) some twist quadrapeds into a bipedal position (and leave it to suspension of disbelief rather than anatomy to keep them walking!) and of course there are the 'taurs. And finally those weirdos that draw realistic animals......
The Famous Artist school's book 'How to Draw Animals' has something for every type of furry artist no matter what their style. I discusses the basics of animal anatomy, deals with many of the mistakes beginners make, does a very good job of showing how the various types of animal families differ and how to repepresent these differences well. The books has hundreds of sketches showing how the various artists approached the issues dealt with in the text,as well as diagrams of actaul muscular and skeltal structures of some common types.. Are you primarily interested in animal faces? There is also a section on how various animal heads are put together and again a good demonstration of how to differentiate them (an importan point, amatuer furry artists can have problems keeping their cats from looking like dogs and vice versa.) as well as how to use proportion to differentiate the members of a common family (emily the greyhound versus jack the bulldog) Finally it discusses how to analyze an unfamiliar animal and place it in a familiar animal family.
Pretty much all the commonly illustrated groups are dealt with, equines canines, felines, birds as well as how to us proportion to say use the same contstruction for a gazelle as for a clydesdale.
All in all I find this book to be an informative and useful one for the furry artist, I think all but the most advanced will finds something of use in it. This and the other famous artist books are commonly available used and can be acquired at cheaply at amazon.com. It is worth adding to the library of any furry artist.
