Great grasp, small package.......2007-07-13
History of Modern Art is a well sructure resource textbook for students who are seeking information about Contemporary and/or Modern Art History. Great grasps of information on every page is a journey through space time and the people who made this possible in the 20th century . You will never find a better textbook on the market.
Awesome book.......2007-02-06
I used this book in college for my two course survey of Modern Art. I absolutely loved the book and when I found out there was a hardback edition I had to have it. Let me tell you, getting it for 66 bucks is a STEAL! I saw this book brand new in a brick and mortar store and it was 110 DOLLARS! If you are at all interested in 20th Century Art I highly recommend this book as a general overview. This was one of the FEW books I read in college and actually enjoyed it.
not delivered in time..........2006-03-02
something wrong while it's handling... and it didn't deliver to me in time, so I just refund instead of keep waiting.
engaging!.......2005-10-10
As a student of Art History, I applaud this book for its diversity and comprehensiveness. There were portions of modern art history that I did not look upon favorably, but now have a great appreciation for after reading this text. It sometimes references pictures that are not in the text itself, but the book is generally liberal with visual references.
I'd reccomend this for any student or art history buff who wants the big picture on art in the modern era.
invaluable.......2005-05-18
I've had this book for 20 years and still constantly pick it up and use it.

History of Modern Art has long been recognized as the authoritative, encyclopedic history of painting, photography, sculpture, and architecture from the mid-19th century, when modern art emerged, to the present day. Revising author Marla F. Prather's contributions to the new Fourth Edition include:
More biographical information about each artist.
An entirely new chapter on Cubism.

More than 30% new illustrations and text and nearly twice the number of color illustrations as in previous editions.
A culturally diverse selection of artists and a much broader selection of works by women.
Chronological reorganization of the text, an updated bibliography, and a complete index.
Marla F. Prather is curator of 20th-century art at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
The late H. H. Arnason was a noted art historian and museum administrator.

History of Modern Art : Painting, Sculpture, Architecture & Photography.......2006-09-07
This is the best art history book around; I got it in college in a course by Dr. Donald Kuspit at S.U.N.Y@ Stony Brook I have this book from 1990 and still to this day I use it as a reference. There is no stone left unturned with this book about modern art. I suggest it for all artists, students and professionals who are in the art field and for everyone who wants a good book on this subject. It is the best one out there!

Best book on its subject.........2003-05-19
"History of Modern Art" is, in my opinion, the very best general overview of modern art (i.e., the last 125-150 years or so) published to this date.
Although it is intended to be a textbook, the format and writing make the tome sufficient as a great general reference and a very good read. The illustrations are excellent, although I wish there were more color reproductions.
Anyone who enjoys fine art should have this book in their personal library.
Get yourself a BIG dictionary........2002-12-31
I just completed a 20th century art course here in Southern California with this book as the chosen textbook. I would consider it at the medium to advanced level. It was much cheaper on Amazon than the college bookstore or the museum store! Like the title of this review suggests, the authors were pre-occupied with their knowlege of uncommon words in the English Language. I would never encourage the "Dumbing down of America" but the word usage in this book is to the point of distraction. The new Oxford Essential Business and Office Dictionary makes it a point in it's forward to point out that usage like this is superfluous. Er, I mean needless. The reproduction is outstanding and the physical structure is very good. I have every intention of making this book part of my permanent collection. And yes, agreeing with the other reviewers above, it is heavy. But hey, with a few extra sit-ups and one or two extra laps and you'll be just fine.

How to read modern art.......2002-07-13
Since first published in 1968, this book has widely used as textbook. As a text, artwork could be explained in various ways. Gombrich¡¯s ¡®Story of Art¡¯, for example, focuses on the interaction between the visual art and its time. Since the book deals with the entire time span of Western visual art, that kind of approach would be better suited to inform readers what and how was the artwork in those times. So distant from our time is it that it¡¯s hard to understand the meaning of the work without referring historical context of the work. All the text presume its reader (or audience). And reader or audience reads the text according to the established convention of the time. The conventions to read the work were so different from ours. But when it comes to the contemporary art, things are more complicated. Robert Hughes¡¯ ¡®The Shock of the New¡¯ follows the line of the contextual explanation. Hughes paints not detailed picture of modernism but overall characterization from bird¡¯s eye view. Thus he didn¡¯t touch all the works canonized. It¡¯s more adequate to make a consistent impression of modernism. However, this book was intended to inform the reader the encyclopedic knowledge on Western visual art from the 19th century to postmodernism. Moreover, the coverage of the book is not restricted to the painting but includes sculpture, architecture, and photography. With that kind of coverage and time span dealt with, one can¡¯t benefit from time¡¯s filtering out like Gombrich¡¯s. to be a coherent text as a history, the author cannot but take the view that ¡®artwork tells itself¡¯. The accounts of this book is focused on teaching the reader how to listen to the voice of artwork. With in-depth analysis of distinguished works one by one, you could learn how to listen. But you can ask: to get such an eye, should I swim through heap of paper (yep it¡¯s bulky) and thousands of pictures? As for art, you can take pleasure with art as much as you know classics. Therefore, the encyclopedic approach of this book is reasonable. And that, it¡¯s not boring at all to follow through explaining artworks one by one. Like other arts, visual art has its convention to interpret text which varies from age to age. One should learn how to read it. This book is a good guidebook to practice and learn how to read artwork. With closing the last page, you could overview the history of visual art since the 19th century and enjoy viewing artwork. And that, you could boast your good taste to your friends ;)
A very informative, but ponderous tome.......2001-08-31
I like the previous review that said this was a metric ton of a book. Yes, it is -- I carried it around for a semester when I was taking a 20th century art class. Lots of color plates and tons of black and white illustrations, and it is printed on very high quality paper (which is why it's so heavy.) It provides a good, reasonably readable survey of what was going on in art from just before the modernist movement up to almost the present day. If you want to acquaint yourself with a broad survey of modern art including all the media, this would be a good one to consider.

Stanislav Libensky and Jaroslava Brychotova: A 40 Year Collaboration in Glass (Art & Design)
ASIN: 0295982152 |
Book Description
Stanislav Libensky and Jaroslava Brychtova have spent almost fifty years refining the art of casting large sculptures made of delicately colored glass. Their achievements have won them a place among the leading artists working in their medium. The Inner Light gives special prominence to the most recent work of this celebrated team. Libensky and Brychtova have mastered the complex technical and aesthetic demands of glass, using the materialís unique properties to create works on a par with the best of modern sculpture. Their work uses changes in surface treatment, the dynamics of intersecting planes, and the presence of voids within the sculptures to control the way light is held, transmuted, and radiated in the presence of the observer.
Robert Kehlmann places their aesthetic in the context of the Czech intellectual and artistic climate that played an important formative role in their development, with particular attention to the influence of Czech cubism. His essay takes a close look at their latest body of work, which utilizes monumental forms to probe issues relating to life, death, and the afterlife.
Two interviews provide further insight into Libensky and Brychtovaís creative process. Kehlmannís conversation with art historian Jiri Setlik, a close friend of the artists, gives a personal perspective on their work. Setlik is vice-director of the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design, Prague, and has written extensively about Libensky and Brychtovaís work. A lively interview with the artists themselves provides yet a fuller sense of the collaborative process behind their luminous and mysterious sculptures.

Book Description
The Museum of Modern Art houses the most important collection of 20th century art in the world, and the Painting & Sculpture department forms the core of its holdings. The masterworks from this department have fundamentally shaped the way we think about modern art. Over the years, these paintings and sculptures in the Museum's galleries have served as a walk-through textbook for countless art history classes and for other visitors. Now, on the occasion of its 75th anniversary and the opening of its newly expanded building, the Museum is publishing this 500 page catalogue devoted solely to the masterworks of its core department. The volume opens with an introduction by John Elderfield, Chief Curator of the Department of Painting and Sculpture, which traces the history of the Museum, focusing on its acquisitions. In 8 subsequent sections, anthologies of texts drawn from the Museum's archives and publications offer varying perspectives on specific artworks and on modern art in general. Modern Painting and Sculpture offers the reader a new perspective for anyone interested in modern art.

BUY WHILE STILL AVAILABLE AND AT AMAZON'S PRICE........2006-01-21
The extensive review by 'Spikey" is a most complete evaluation; so I will add only a little more:
I downrated this excellent book for the following reason: Unless one is writing a doctoral thesis on the 'day by day' and 'item by item' development of the rebult MOMA, he/she does not need 61 pages of detail. Perhaps this could have been published in a $1.00 (!) paperback; or condensed into half that amount of pages (and heavy coated paper at that!)
I differ with the previous reviewer in his/her unhappiness with the comment/evaluation of each displayed item: I have never seen another 'art/picture' book whose comments were other than the author/editor's. So reading someone else's comments on the work involved (even though reproduced from previous presentations) is unusual and valuable. Also many of us have not been able to see those previous exhibitions and do not have the associated brochures.
The comment on the lack of many scuptures is discussed in the book: Most are too large to be photographed.
By all means, buy the book -- especially to see (unless you live in the NY area) what has been accomplished by rebuilding the MOMA, and the more extensive art now able to be displayed.
Get it while you can, this is probably a limited edition..........2005-02-28
As part of MoMA's 75th Anniversary, this volume presents the very best of the Painting & Sculpture Department. The organization of this volume is quite different from most other art texts - the collection is broken into six eras, and further divided by the major artistic movements which define and represent it. A visual of each work discussed is presented separate from, and after, the descriptive text. This may or may not be helpful to all - those who like to read about and see art at the same time will not approve of this organization. Those who wish only to see the collection might appreciate the ability to view clear and vivid images grouped together. This "image only" crowd may also enjoy the juxtaposition of seeing Edward Hopper, Jacob Lawrence and Diego Rivera on successive pages - the entire book is full of these sequences of artists and movements.
I will say I was surprised to learn the descriptive texts were actually reprints from previous MoMA exhibitions. Although I was briefly confused, and slightly disappointed by this, I can say that the statements selected were excellent choices. For example, an anecdotal essay about a piece by Balthus reveals the reasoning for the artist's decision to alter the painting.
This book speaks volumes for MoMA's Painting & Sculpture Department, but by no means could it even come close to defining the entire collection. What I can say is that I get a very good sense, or a rough outline, as to what it means to view the collection. Despite my overall admiration for this book, I feel it could have done a better job presenting sculpture. Either this book does not depict as many pieces as possible, or sculptural pieces within the collection lack diversity; it appeared that most sculptural works were discussed in the final two sections (eras) of the book. I have no complaints otherwise and consider this book a quality piece and gain particular insight and understand from being able to see some familiar, and not so familiar, works placed side by side for the first time.
Just a note, the copy I own has a little insert admitting "Errata," although I doubt this book will see more than one hardback printing, see if your copy acknowledges errors on p. 328 and p. 441.

Book Description
This book focuses on representations of work in American sculpture, from the decade in which the American Federation of Labor was formed, to the inauguration of the federal works project that subsidized American artists during the Great Depression. Restoring a group of important monuments to the history of labor, gender studies and American art history, this book analyzes key monuments and small-scale works in which labor was often constituted as "manly" and where the work ethic mediated both production and reception.

Book Description
Artists discovered and explored the artistic and practical applications of photography at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries. This stunning book explores the highly individual ways some of the most influential artists of the period put this “wondrous new medium” to use in their painting and sculpture and shows how they enfolded photographs into their creative processes.
Paintings, sculpture, and photographs by such artists as Bonnard, Brancusi, Degas, Gauguin, Khnopff, Moreau, Mucha, Munch, Picasso, Rodin, Rosso, Vallotton, von Stuck, and Vuillard are discussed and reproduced. The book also includes an array of photographs by great masters (Steichen, Nadar, Muybridge) and lesser-known figures.
Customer Reviews:
Photography as the Painter and Sculptor's Intermediary.......2000-08-31
I first became aware of the impact of photography on abstract art when I commissioned a portrait. Expecting to be told to sit, instead I was encouraged to strike poses that meant something to me. The artist followed me around with a Polaroid camera. We discussed what the camera was showing, and tried different poses. Eventually, I found one we both liked. Then he made copies of the Polaroid and began using a marker to crop and adjust the work. Later, when the painting was finished, I could see a memory of the Polaroid but the actual painting was quite different in image and execution of color and materials. When I asked about this, the artist told me he had first trained as a photographic artist and liked to work back and forth between the two media. Very interesting.
With that experience, I was delighted to see this fine work on the impact photography had on Symbolist artists around the turn of the 20th century. This is a catalogue also for a traveling show that is just about to close at the Guggenheim in Bilbao. The closest location to me was Dallas, so I would have missed the show otherwise.
The catalogue is much more heavy duty than most such efforts. It is dominated by essays rather than by images, although it is generously illustrated.
The subject is well-chosen because these artists were heavily interested in expressing the interior essence of the subjects rather than their outward appearance. Dorothy Kosinski's opening essay on Vision and Visionaries is a wonderful summary of the show. After introductory essays by Elizabeth Childs on The Photographic Muse, Douglas Nickel on Photography and Invisibility, and Ulrich Pohlmann on Photography as a Study Aid, each artist has an essay describing his use of photography. In order of appearance are Moreau, Degas, Rodin, Gauguin, Khnopff, Rosso, Mucha, Munch, von Stuck, Vallotton, Bonnard, Vuillard, Brancusi, and Picasso. Some of the artists may be unfamiliar to you, as they were to me. But it's a good excuse to learn about them.
What I learned from the book was a greater appreciation for the creative process. For example, I might admire a figure in a painting, but seeing it in the context of a photograph of the model makes me appreciate it more. Because this way I can see what the artist added, which gives me clues as to what the artist wanted to express that I might have missed. And the transformations are quite substantial and impressive.
Naturally, not everyone used photographs simply as models. The sculptors tended to use photography also to display their work in more powerful ways. For example, the lighting effects on Rodin's and Brancusi's finished works are quite stunning . . . adding elements that would be unseen otherwise.
I was equally interested in the use of x-rays and microscopic pictures to reveal what cannot be detected by the eye, and expand the range of images that can be considered. Photography of motion also picks up elements that can never be posed otherwise, like a rider on a racing horse.
Photography also became a form of communication for these artists. Gauguin used photographs to keep in touch with Paris in both directions while in Tahiti. Picasso was able to carry around with him the classical examples that inspired him, without needing to revisit the original. These references also communicate to us more about what he had seen and wanted to portray. It expanded my understanding of his early works to see these connections. His classical roots are much deeper than I had realized.
Interestingly, the artists usually tried to keep their use of photography a secret. Some even railed against photography, while using it in private to assist them. Many of them eventually learned to make their own photographs, but many relied on the talent of fine photographers to help them.
The question that kept running through my mind was how artists are using the Internet now in ways that will not be documented and understood for another 100 plus years.
Enjoy this wonderful and thought provoking book that will expand your access to art!
A solid, informative survey of artistic explorations........2000-03-03
Dorothy Kosinski's Artist And The Camera: Degas To Picasso explores the ways in which influential artists from the period put a new medium to use in painting and sculpture. This accompanies a traveling exhibition but stands alone as a solid survey of artistic explorations at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries.

Great Reference Book.......2003-03-19
very useful reference book for inspirational creativity.
A Classic.......2000-07-23
This book is a "must have" for any fan of French art deco/art moderne style. It is beautifully researched and written. The wonderful photography only made me long for more.
exquisite book, a must.......1999-11-25
There was nothing written on this true master of Art Deco metalware, and this book is as comprehensive as a book can be on an artist. Written with respect, admiration and love for the Art Deco style and the metal craft. Cannot be surpassed. Nothing missing, nothing redundant.
Extraordinary overview of the artist, the man, and his time........1999-06-23
The author has produced a comprehensive work covering this great Art Deco artist and the exciting era in which he flourished. Joan Kahr's tremendous depth of knowledge and understanding comes through on every page of this beautiful book.
Covers it's subject from every perspective........1999-05-21
I am a practicing metalsmith of 35 years. This much needed book covers it's subject from every perspective. It will become a valuable asset to historians, collectors and craftsmen. My only critique is that Joan did not include a picture of Brandt's stamp and other ways of varifying his work from fraud.

Customer Reviews:
An impressive and fully rounded presentation.......2001-06-07
Roy Lichtenstein is one of America's premier "pop art" painters and print makers. His style is instantly recognizable and powerfully influenced the popular culture of the last thirty years. Roy Lichtenstein: Interiors is an informative, wonderfully illustrated introduction and analysis of his "interior" paintings -- many published her for the first time. Robert Fitzpatrick is Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and effectively collaborates with Dorothy Lichtenstein, the late Leo Castelli, Sidney B. Felsen, and Cassandra Lozano to present an impressive and fully rounded presentation on the life, work, and artistic innovations of Lichtenstein. Roy Lichtenstein: Interiors is a very highly recommended addition to personal, academic, and community library American art history collections.
Blends social commentary with caricatures.......2001-05-18
Roy Lichtenstein has a distinctive pop art style which blends social commentary with caricatures: Interiors profiles many of his drawings of structures and space, with occasional people included in the sketches. Full-page color drawings accompany surveys of Lichtenstein's works and achievements.
