Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

In his highly acclaimed text, Robert Hughes points out that the reality pursued in Freud's paintings goes far beyond naturalism. It is both startling and disconcerting, producing some of the most powerful and moving visual images to have appeared in the last thirty years.

Freud—once dubbed "the Ingres of existentialism"—has almost single-handedly redefined the figurative painting of our time. No other living artist possesses his ability to paint the texture and thinness of skin over flesh, and his distinctive portraits have a haunting quality that makes them impossible to forget.

This volume, with over one hundred superb reproductions of his greatest paintings, pays tribute to one of the most original and accomplished artists of the twentieth century.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars images.......2007-08-23

Freud's work primarily through photographs of his paintings. However, the text is weak on chronology, development and current status of his painting technique. ...A good intro for the person who is not familiar with his work.

5 out of 5 stars Lucian Freud.......2007-05-30

The printing quality of this book is very good. I can see clearly the brush movement of the painter. The book size is also good enough to view photo's details.

5 out of 5 stars A definitve monograph.......2001-06-29

Every great artist deserves a great biographer: Bacon had David Sylvester, Giocometti had Sylvester AND James Lord, and Lucien Freud has Robert Hughes. Hughes' generous text is richly detailed and captures the mood of Freud's heavily impastoed works with turns of phrase that become as important as the art. To see the change in Freud's technique and approach to the figure from his early works to his current larger than life theatrical style is jolting. Always commited to portraiture his paintings have grown from the tightly surfaced, tiny but well known head of his friend Francis Bacon, to his current full figures as viewed from bizarre vantage. His brush technique has become more coarse and in doing so he is creating figures that, while monumental, feel as thogh they pulsate on the canvas. Freud is one of the important painters of our time and this book justifies that position on every level. A scholarly - yet pulsatile - study of a modern genius.

4 out of 5 stars "Fascinating Freud Figures".......2000-02-23

Any book containing the work of Lucian Freud, I feel, writes itself. Not as an insult to the author, but as a testiment to the painter himself.

The full page color photos do justice to this great man, as well as a book can.

The author does an acceptional job of sumarizing and analyzing the painter's Life and work.

Great Cats is a beautifully illustrated travelogue of one man's unusual adventure. In 1993, soldier-turned-award-winning-artist Simon Combes set out to observe and paint the nine great cats of the world in their natural habitats. Combes circled the globe to accomplish this feat, braving blizzards and blowguns. He breaks his account down into three three-cat sections: Cats of the Jungle (Thailand's Clouded Leopard, Venezuela's Jaguar, and India's Bengal Tiger), Cats of the Snow (Siberia's Siberian Tiger, Mongolia's Snow Leopard, North America's Cougar), and Cats of the Plains (Kenya's Cheetah and Tanzania's Leopard and Lion).

Combes's skillful sketches and photographic paintings are matched only by his fresh and engaging commentary. As a gifted artist, Combes is very perceptive, and he employs this talent both on and off the canvas, making wry and sometimes hysterical observations of the human subjects he encounters. The cats, however, are given only reverent scrutiny, and anyone who is drawn to the power and beauty of these regal creatures will find Combes a kindred spirit and capable guide. One of the most thoughtful additions to the book is an information box for each cat, detailing its behavior, habitat, population status, and principal threats. Combes gravely notes that the most serious threat to each of the cats is human encroachment on its dwindling habitat. --Paul Hughes

Book Description

Adventurer and artist Simon Combes had a life-long desire to paint the nine great cats of the world in their natural habitat. This commitment to accuracy sets him apart from his very able competition in the world of wildlife painters. Not content to study only zoo specimens and skeletons, Simon Combes studied the animals in their own worlds, full of battles, starvation and the competition in nature where truly only the fit survive. Already famous for his African wildlife paintings, Combes set out on what became a three year, three continent journey through the plains, jungles and snow to find the jaguar, cougar, lion, cheetah, snow leopard, Siberian tiger, clouded leopard, Bengal tiger and African leopard.

5 out of 5 stars Review of painters' secrets from Giotto to David Hockney........1999-10-10

Positively eye opening! As a watercolorist making the transition to oil, I received many wonderful insights that helped me confirm the direction I want to take with this difficult yet rewarding medium. Great for anyone starting in oils or who has painted for years and just wants to see "how the other guy's doing it." One sour note, however, in the inclusion of Jackson Pollock -- a "spasher," not a painter. Overall, the best book in my studio library. Please, dear publisher, print some more copies of this wonderful book!

    Book Description

When Monet falls and injures his leg, young Frederic Bazille entertains the sufferer by painting his portrait in bed; when Monet is penniless and his mistress pregnant, Bazille buys a painting out of charity. But Bazille dies in the Franco-Prussian War, while Monet lives on to become a great master and to enjoy a productive and prosperous old age lasting well into the twentieth century. This story, which stretches from the 1860s to the 1920s, is just one of a vast number of intriguing narratives that weave through this unique diary of the Impressionist movement. From the rise of Manet as the most controversial artist of the mid-nineteenth century to the record-breaking prices achieved at auction in the late twentieth century, the most important artistic events, exhibitions, and sales are chronicled, as are the artists' personal lives: their relationships, children, allegiances, political activities, passions, obsessions, hatreds, and quarrels. Carefully selected extracts from the artists' private letters and diaries, and from reviews and studies, allow the reader to hear the voices and opinions of the time. Contemporary historical events--political, economic, social, and cultural--are recorded in parallel with the artistic developments. A huge number of images of all kinds--paintings and drawings, photographs, posters, book jackets, letters, and even caricatures--reveal the splendor of the great masterpieces and the reality of the world in which they were created. The Chronicle of Impressionism is a complete record of the artists and their times, tracing the story of Impressionism as it unfolds. This is the one indispensable guide to the movement that, more than any other, has shaped the path of modern painting. Over 400 illustrations, 203 in color.

        Book Description

An award-winning team again join their talents
When summer ends, a family pack their suitcases and bid the big blue house farewell. All seems quiet. But soon the leaves change color; then comes the snow. A cat creeps into the house and curls up in the woodbox. A mouse tucks himself into a cupboard. When spring comes, the garden awakens, and by summer the house is bustling with human life once more.
This unusual story about a summer house that welcomes all sorts of guests in the off-season celebrates the rhythm and cycle of the seasons, and reminds us all that we share our world – even our homes – with other living creatures.

... and no one's there to hear it, then what happens in a summer home during the off season? The premise for this book is certainly an interesting one. Who wouldn't wonder what goes on in an empty house? Actually, the house isn't entirely empty. No human is in the house. But at least one mouse and one spider are busy at work. We can also expect the typical creaks and groans of the building, the dripping of a leaky faucet.

What disturbs me are the stray cat with the run of the house and the bird in the attic. I'm obviously considering this from an adult viewpoint and an animal lover viewpoint. How did those animals get into the house? The nooks and crannies that they found to get inside would also be available to any other animals of their size. Then why aren't more cats and birds (or destructive squirrels) inside? While I'm almost grateful that these creatures have a safe and protected place to spend the winter, I'm worried about them. What are they eating? Is the kitty using the kitchen floor as a litter box, or does she always go back outside to do her business? Why does she curl up in an uncomfortable wood box near the stove, which probably isn't turned on? The family didn't irresponsibly leave her behind, did they? What about the bird in the attic? Is she able to fly in and out? How much whitewash is on the floor beneath her perch? The author doesn't speculate on any of those realities.

When good weather and the summer residents return, there are also baby birds and kittens on the scene. (Aha! There must have been a second bird and a second cat, somewhere along the line.) The birds will be fine, of course. (Is the whole brood living in the attic? Egad!) But what will become of the kittens? Will the humans adopt them? If so, will the arrangement be just for the summer, or will they take them home at the end of the season? Or are they doomed to be strays like their Mom? Is someone in charge of shooing all the birds from the top floor? What a trial that could be. We see a happy family at the end, ready to spend another summer in their favorite place. What we don't see is anyone cleaning up the mess in the attic or getting the sofa reupholstered because it was used for months as a scratching post.

Again, I like the premise of the book. At the same time, I'm troubled by its presentation. Savvy youngsters and parents who are cat and / or bird owners or appreciators may be just as uncomfortable as I am. Obviously, to make the story more intriguing, there might have to be something bigger than a mouse in the house. But there are consequences that go along with that decision. Wouldn't someone have to prepare the house for human habitation for the summer? Fix the holes, tidy up the place? Maybe I'm asking too much of a children's picture book. I wanted to like this book, and I'm finding it difficult to do so.

5 out of 5 stars BOLD, BRIGHT IMPRESSIONISTIC PAINTINGS.......2005-07-28

Anyone who ever owned or dreamed of owning a summer home will be attracted to "The Great Blue House." However, the talented team of Kate Banks and Georg Hallensleben offer a different take on vacation homes. The magic in this story is not found in the good times the family has during the warm months, but rather on how the house awaits their return through the fall, winter and early spring.

When the family leaves, "The gate is locked. The windows are sealed tight. In the yard the grass lies flat. All is quiet in the great blue house. Or is it?"

There are noises inside the house - a faucet drips, a cupboard door swings open, and a mouse nibbles at crumbs. As the days grow cold frost covers the windowpanes and we're invited to "Listen to it buckle and crack." Soon, a stray cat has found a new home in a woodbox inside the house, and high in the attic a bird hides from the cat.

After winter, rain comes and spring arrives as the bird builds a nest and the cat "settles into a secret dream." When the family returns in the summer they're delighted to find fledglings and baby kittens. Summer and life return to the great blue house.

Hallensleben's double page paintings are bold, bright, Impressionistic - quite beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars A book to facilitate conversation.......2002-11-11

I like this book very much. In a one on one setting with an interested child, the stories and illustrations in this book will provoke lots of questions and explanations. Most of the Bible stories are about lesser known women, such as Deborah and Abigail, who deserve to be better understood. Be sure to preview this book before reading it with a child. There are two paintings (of Judith and Salome) with beheaded men which may be disturbing to some younger children. Cranach's painting is of a nude Eve. One of my favorite paintings in the book is Caravaggio's of Mary and Martha. He contrasts them by showing Mary in very simple clothing and Martha in an elaborate dress. This lovely book provides a wonderful avenue for teaching both Bible stories and art appreciation. The stories are retold in a straight-forward, simple and engaging way.
