Book Description

In Volume III, as in Volumes I and II, the classic topics of reading are included--from vocabulary and comprehension to reading instruction in the classroom--and, in addition, each contributor was asked to include a brief history that chronicles the legacies within each of the volume's many topics. However, on the whole, Volume III is not about tradition. Rather, it explores the verges of reading research between the time Volume II was published in 1991 and the research conducted after this date. The editors identified two broad themes as representing the myriad of verges that have emerged since Volumes I and II were published: (1) broadening the definition of reading, and (2) broadening the reading research program. The particulars of these new themes and topics are addressed.

5 out of 5 stars Using Research to Accommodate Instruction.......2000-06-15

An extremely well-written compilation and synthesis of research in the field of Reading. Some areas that are explored include Early Literacy, Motivation and Achievement, Historical Perspectives of Reading Research, Comprehension, and Computers and Reading. The synthesis and meta-analysis of the research provides implications for instruction. A must have for reading specialists, Special Education specialist/teachers, and anyone who has the desire to improve their understanding of the reading process and improve their instruction.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great reference material........2005-12-10

I keep this around for when I'm bored and just want to browse and think about materials, but it's most useful for when you forget things. For instance, when you forget exactly how much dammar resin to soak in turpentine, like I did today. I found the answer in seconds and went back to work. Very, very handy. On the other hand, if you're not doing two-dimensional work, this won't be so handy. This is a great text on painting, drawing, and formal aspects and techniques in those areas.

5 out of 5 stars A great resource for artists.......2003-09-28

This book is an important resource for artists. Ray Smith has a complete knowledge of art materials, and he gives a complete and detailed description of each material and how they are used. It covers a wide range of art materials including paints, grounds, pencils, inks, printing equipment, cereamic tiles, stained glass, and so forth. Also included is information on color, perspective, framing, photography, and exhibiting your work. Basically it's a complete guide to the 2D mediums of art. if you're interesting in 3D arts such as sculpture or pottery, you're not in luck. Those fields aren't covered.

For me, it's interesting to just look through this book and examine the wide range of techniques and materials presented in it. You can find a lot of new ideas to try out. Even if you're an experienced artist, I think you can find something new that you will be excited to try. Check it out. It's worth it.

3 out of 5 stars ADDIT TO LAST REVIEW I SUBMITTED.......2003-05-09

When recommending an alternative text in the last review I wrote of this book, I suggested Robert Gottsegan's book. His real name is Mark David Gottsegan. Apologies for this mistake.

3 out of 5 stars Good but contains some bad advice.......2003-05-09

I agree with the preceding reviewers but must add I found this book to be so general as to require supplementation by other books such as those by Ralph Mayer(somewhat out of date but still useful) or Robert Gottsegan. Ray Smith does offer some very dubious advice in parts of the text eg. he suggests that after priming your support with the traditional lead primer, you should sand it to smooth the surface. This is a TERRIBLE suggestion. Lead is very dangerous when inhaled--it only becomes inhalable when sanded or when used in pigment form. Sanding it is an absolute no-no.Ralph Mayer is a chemist, so his advice on safety issues is a lot more reliable than Mr Smith's. Of all three books, that by Gottsegan is probably the one I would recommend most as it is far more up to date than Smith's or Mayer's.

5 out of 5 stars Get this book!.......2002-01-06

Quite simply this is a fantastic book. The things you can learn from it are amazing. Starting from the very first chapter a very in-depth analysis of pigments, their types, chemical structures, lightfastness, reactions to different types of binders, etc. are given. And that's only the beginning because the next chapters cover different types of oils, resins, glues, starches, gums, solvents, waxes, and additives...and all of this just for the paint in the tubes or the mediums you use with it. Then the author moves on to an in-depth look at various supports (wood, canvas, steel, copper, fiber, etc). Paper and grounds each get its own chapter.

All this before ever discussing the media you can choose to use. The obligatory big four are covered in detail (watercolor, acrylic, soft pastel and oil) but what makes this book such a treasure is the coverage of so many less well-known media. Just some of the media that get their own chapters are pencils and graphite sticks, colored pencil, oil pastel, chalk and conte crayons, charcoal, silverpoint, scratchboard, pen and ink, brush and ink, egg tempera, gouache, encaustic, fresco, dry wall (aka mural) painting, stained glass, ceramic tiles, enameling, and a bunch of chapters on various kinds of print-making (woodcut, linocut, intaglio, lithography and screen printing). There are chapters covering color theory, perspective, painting restoration, making frames, repairing damaged paint films, varnishing, photography, computer art and even a chapter on how to set up a well-lit, well-ventilated artist studio and exhibiting your art. The last chapter gives formulas for making your own paints or pastels. The book finishes up with a glossary, bibliography and an index.

The only things I would've liked to see included but didn't (maybe they'll add them in a second edition?) are chapters on casein, calligraphy and various types of sculpting and glass etching. Even so, that is a minor quibble. Overall, I really have high praise for this book. Definitely give it serious consideration as a reference for your bookshelf.

This book does a great job of going over almost all the facets of starting and airbrushing. One of the most complete books I've seen.

I gave this book to my husband along with a new airbrush & it's been a great help to him, includes info that even the airbrush didn't company give.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Excellence!!.......2005-09-08

The "Ultimate Airbrush Handbook" is exactly what it's title says is! No hyperbole in the title. It covers all aspects of airbrushing, useful to everyone, including newbies like myself. Well worth the money spent!

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Airbrush Handbook.......2005-07-21

Excellent. As the title states the "ultimate". Should be the first book purchased, borrowed or stolen for the enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2005-04-22

I've read other "how to airbrush" books, but this one is the best.
There is something for everyone from beginner (me) to advanced airbrushers.
From masking to freehand airbrushing.

Easy and simple to understand.
Once I received it and started reading it,I couldn't put it down.
So many things I thought I knew, but the book set me straight.

Other people on web forums had recommended this book, wish I had done it sooner.

5 out of 5 stars the end all reference guide for artists.......2007-05-23

If you are searching for a book that will explain materials and tools for the artist this is the first book you should turn to. I have been referencing this book for a decade now and still have a lot to learn from Ralph Mayer, a man who spent his life investigating various techniques of painting.

If you open this book up, you will come across just about any question you might have. For instance, I recently used Mayer for egg tempra painting. In his book he has a few pages regarding the subject, not many, but enough to fully explain the basics and get you started properly. He covers brushes, pigments, paints, from the obscure to the most basic.

One section of the book that I am keenly interested in is his break down of a massive number of pigments where he goes into more detail on each than any other source I have come across.

This is not exactly a how to paint or draw book. This book is intended for those who want to make a serious study of process practices in the correct manner for archival purposes. This is a must have book that should be in any painters studio.

One last item of note: If you have used this book before and found it of interest, I highly suggest that the next time you are around New Haven CT that you visit the Yale 'Ralph Mayer' center. Yale itself has many museums and buildings worth visiting and the Mayer center is just one small highlight. Its staff was very kind when I visited. When I showed an interest in Mayer, they were eager to share some of the more interesting aspects of the collection.

3 out of 5 stars Very good on pigments, but definitely painting not drawing oriented........2007-02-20

While I don't work in oils, the coverage of oils seemed exceptionally deep. Material on pigments also was relevant to watercolor (something in which I dabble) and pastels (one of my major areas). I was disappointed not to find any real discussion of charcoal, graphite, or colored pencils. It would have been nice to get a slight discussion of materials not "professional", such as wax crayons.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for your library.......2007-01-25

This is a must have for your library. If you need to know the why's and the what for's this is the book to have. It covers techniques, materials, safety and much more.

5 out of 5 stars Artist's Bible.......2007-01-12

This is THE bible for fine artists. Chock full of all the information you would want, need to know, or don't even know you don't know. Recommended by my painting professors at the Savannah College of Art and Desing. This is a heavy book - both material-wise and weight-wise. The anchor of your book shelf if you are a fine artist.

5 out of 5 stars Technically Valuable Info.......2006-12-02

I haven't read the book yet, but I play to order it soon, based on the sample pages I read on the AMAZON site and the other reviews. I found the unformation valuable, and I "could't put it down". It seems to be a great book for the curious, obsessively detailed, intelligent readers who just always want to learn more and more details about what they are doing. I suspect the word "intelligent" may be the operative word here because, judging from a single review (by Victor A. Coronel "Armando") who said the book was useless, and the way his review was written, it sounds like it may be just a tad too difficult for Victor to understand, so he found it useless. I hope that other readers can tell by all the other reviews that this is probably the case, and the book may just be a little above the reading comprehension level for some readers.

Book covers all the basics and more. I learned a lot from it and use it as a base for many different types of jewelry that I make. It's well written and can be used by beginners and the more experienced metalsmiths.

5 out of 5 stars The total student guide.......2007-02-22

A tremendous book that covers all of the basics. If you are considering taking a class on metalsmithing, you should consider this book. It is an inexpensive foundation book that covers all of the basics and gives you good information on almost everything. Some of the more advanced details are not covered, but it has so much basic information that can be forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Metalsmith.......2007-01-24

I borrowed this book several times from our local library and finally decided to see if a copy was still avaviable to buy. Its full of very useful information that Ive seldom if ever seen elsewhere. A great book for a hobby metal worker OR professional. Tims explanations on how to carry out various operations and processes are consise and easy to follow. Im REALLY enjoying owning this reference work.
A must for amateur or professional metalworkers jewellers or anyone who likes to "potter " in the shed .

5 out of 5 stars He's the Master.......2006-07-20

Tim McCreight writes a book that is useful for beginners as well as more advanced students of metalsmithing. The information is presented in a manner that is easy to understand. Once you have mastered the technique the book is a wonderful reference tool. This is a must have for your metalsmithing library.

5 out of 5 stars The one book for any art metal/jewelry artist.......2006-03-29

This edition or any of the other versions of this book is a must have. I have seen this book in one edition or another sold in the most different locations with only one thing in common. That is METAL you can use it no matter what you are doing if its with metal you can use this book. I have a large number of books in my collection and find that I use this one to answer questions and get quick info. I would suggest that you get the pro edition at some point as it comes with a disk with some small programs for a PDA and books on the computer only. I own it in three different editions.

For those who value correct grammar, Anne Stilman has written the definitive guide. She holds you to her high grammatical standards, and clearly explains how to follow the rules. There are chapters on "Spelling," "Punctuation," "Grammar," and "Style," and Stilman patiently elucidates the rules of colons, brackets, and plural formations, while gracefully tackling the common misuses of "lie" versus "lay." Her illustrative examples bring the stickiest lessons home. Quoting from Woody Allen, Vikram Seth, Mark Twain, and other likable authors, issues of pronoun choice, parallelism, and ellipses come clear. Although Stilman cuts no slack on errors, she concedes that grammar evolves. While she suggests that you avoid splitting infinitives, she also believes you shouldn't introduce excessive awkwardness merely to conform to a rule that was dogmatically decreed years ago for no particular reasons of clarity or merit.

5 out of 5 stars This book mostly delivers what it promises........2007-03-28

I bought this book because I was looking for a guide to grammar and some of its trickier aspects. This book is direct and fairly thorough. It addresses many of the problems that people have with spelling, pronoun-antecedent agreement, punctuation use, etc. The instruction is concise and nearly always contains both incorrect examples and corrected examples of the particular topics. Some topics even include exercises to test the reader's knowledge.

I would have liked to have seen more exercises, but the book would serve its intended purpose just as well if it had no exercises at all.

This is a great book for brushing up on some of the finer points of grammar.

I work as an editor-in-chief for a website. When I was first hired, I bought this book as a reference for creating and defining editorial standards for the website.

The book is informative, and also incredibly interesting! I'm a huge lover of words and writing, and for me, the background of certain rules were a great added touch.

The book is thorough; detailed; well-thought out and presented. I use it weekly; sometimes daily.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Very basic shapes.......2007-08-15

Like many beginning woodcarving books this book describes the basic cuts you need to practice and it gives some information on wood types. Beyond that, the only reason to purchase this book is if you need the patterns in them.

Being new to wood carving I like the price of the book and I thought I would give it a try. Once I saw the patterns though, I changed my mind and bought another book. This is just a matter of taste but the cutesy mouse and the fisherman weren't what I wanted to carve and I feel that you really need to find carvings that interest you (especially while you are learning) to prevent boredom. Once again, if the patterns on the cover look interesting to you, then by all means get this book (if you are a complete beginner).

1 out of 5 stars Very, very elementary........2007-05-18

After reviewing the book, I returned it. I would guess that there is an audience out there that want to carve cutsey figurines but, ugh! Who would want them around the house? I have several carving books from which I have gleaned useful information but, frankly, this is subject matter deserving of a video demonstration. Until you see how a carver twists, turns, and taps the chisel to accommodate the grain of the wood, I just don't think you are going to get it. Not at least without chewing up a lot of valuable wood as the masters do doubt have.

That said I have to take responsibility for my bad judgement in selecting this book as the author/publisher provided ample glimpses to the interior pages. So, my bad.

5 out of 5 stars Good for the beginner........2007-01-09

A terrific beginner book with lots of variety in types of carving. I've added it to my collection of references.

4 out of 5 stars Good starter book.......2006-08-18

I am a carver -- mantle pieces and such -- and bought the book for a young man who wanted to try his hand at carving. It covers all the basics and even has some great patterns.

4 out of 5 stars I feel better now.......2003-06-27

I have wanted to carve wood for some time, but had no idea how to go about learning. Most of the books I've looked at were either too technical or too advanced for me. Finally, this book has given me the confidence to begin. The discussions are well written at a level that's good for a beginner like me. I read the entire book in about 3 hours and am now going back and starting my first project. The projects look doable and I know what I'm supposed to be learning in each one. Unlike most books, this one doesn't assume a progression from project to project so that you have to do them all--whether they interest you or not. I like being able to focus on whittling or chip work and being able to put off other types until I have a reason to do them.

1 out of 5 stars Just plain wrong.......2007-07-02

Please don't buy this inaccurate text. It has at least one major flaw. The author incorrectly claims that the horizon is always at eye level. It's easy to see that's false. Walk into the Grand Canyon and you'll notice that the horizon is well above eye level.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!... It's my #1 choice in my Top 5 perspective books..........2006-11-07

This is currently my favorite perspective book! If I listed my Top 5, it would have to be: Perspective Drawing Handbook; Perspective Made Easy; Perspective! for Comic Book Artists; Basic Perspective Drawing: A Visual Guide, 4th edition; and then Creative Perspective for Artists and Illustrators. Perspective Drawing Handbook is my favorite because it's clear, concise, slim & to the point. It's very enlightening! In my opinion, Joseph D' Amelio was a genius in his understanding of perspective & his ability to communicate this to others. Because this book is so slim, clear & reasonably priced, I would highly recommend this to anyone & *everyone* interested in learning about perspective-based drawing. Even if it doesn't become your favorite overall, it's certainly worth having in your collection, as perspective is such a difficult topic that it's really best to buy a number of books. And if you're going to buy a number of books, it would help to know which are the *best* while at the same time being reasonably priced. This is at the top of my list! Three-point perspective *is* covered here, although he mostly avoids this term and instead calls this "looking up & down". It's simplistic in its approach, but that's what great teachers are about: taking difficult concepts & making them easy to understand. The writing can be a little stiff, but this book relies mostly on visuals, which is exactly what I prefer! There really aren't that many words here, especially when compared to another book I recently reviewed: Creative Perspective for Artists and Illustrators. If you think Perspective Drawing Handbook is a bit too wordy, than you'd definitely want to stay away from Creative Perspective! Perspective Drawing Handbook: my highest recommendation!

2 out of 5 stars Older text - at times difficult to read.......2006-08-27

Too much text, not enough drawing. I much prefer Perspective: space and design

5 out of 5 stars Slender, but without question the FINEST of all introductions on PERSPECTIVE.......2004-06-29

"PERSPECTIVE DRAWING HANDBOOK" by Joseph D`Amelio

Amelio really packed this book with well-illustrated covering of Perspective in Black & White. Better still, D`Amelio manages to keep text down to the bare essentials, preferring to illustrate the point rather than describe it. Fascinating. Nicely put together, and very concise at 96 pages. I really liked it.

Suggested retail at $8.95 this is a good reference, and eminently affordable. It seemed quite deserving of FIVE STARS for making an obscure subject clear to the general public with a direct, no-nonsense approach. What Stephen Rogers Peck does for anatomy, is what D'Amelio does for teaching PERSPECTIVE.

5 out of 5 stars Indespensible perspective reference:.......2000-06-20

D'Amelio has laid out the basics of mechanical perspective drawing in easy to follow steps with clear illustrations. Readily adaptable to instruction for the general audience and eminently practical with illustrations for many basic and more complex perspective problems, the text is well organized as well as intertaining. I have used this text to teach perspective in high school drawing classes for 15 years.

5 out of 5 stars Pitelka's "Clay:A Studio Handbook".......2005-08-26

I have read several books (library) on pottery and technique and THIS book, for all inclusive information, beats them all. One definitely that should be in everyone's studio. Easy to quick reference. Easy to read and understand. I actually could visualize making forms as I read the text. It gets right down to the molecular events that happen in the kiln, things I didn't know before. Wonderful work!! Take a class, then read this book. You'll want to play with clay the rest of your life.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect studio handbook.......2002-03-15

This book is wonderful. It contains information on everything from properly wedging and centering clay, to how to set up your own studio and select equipment. It's informative without being so academic that it's hard to read. I would recommend it to anyone who is trying to supplement their knowledge of ceramics. I have more hands-on pottery experience than academic, so this answers all the little things I've been wondering about such as "What is the difference between earthenware and stoneware?", "How does a noborigama work?", or "What is the proper way to photograph my work?" This is the perfect studio reference book.
