Book Description
Ever since anonymous spray-can art began appearing on city walls in New York and Philadelphia in the late 1960s, graffiti has been a ubiquitous presence in the urban landscape, its artists largely unsung heroes. As hip-hop culture spread from America, graffiti became a worldwide phenomenon, emerging in the 1980s as the symbolic artistic language of young people everywhere and one of the most potent influences on youth-oriented marketing and design. With more than 2,000 illustrations by over 150 artists from all over the world and interviews with many of them, this visually arresting book is the most comprehensive survey of graffiti art ever published.
Today's young graffiti artists incorporate a variety of mediums-including stickers, stencils, oils, acrylics, and oil-based chalk-as well as an ever-expanding range of social commentary. This evolution in style and subject matter has earned graffiti the respect of the art world and guaranteed its long-lasting influence on art, graphic design, and style around the world. Great fun for graffiti and pop-culture buffs, the book is also an essential reference work for anyone involved in the visual arts today. AUTHOR BIO: Nicholas Ganz (also known as Keinom, his pen name) is a graffiti artist who has traveled around the world to gather material for this book. He lives in Essen, Germany. Tristan Manco is a graphic artist and director of Bristol-based Tijuana Design. He is the author of Stencil Graffiti and Street Logos.

Great reference.......2007-08-06
I'm an art teacher, and I have this book in my room for ninth graders to look at during "down" time. It is so popular that I have had to repair it with book-binding tape after only two years. Many of the students just enjoy looking at the variety of impressive artwork, and some of them enjoy copying the styles of letters to create their own names or phrases. There are hundreds and hundreds of photos from around the world, showcasing a wide variety of styles. I find it hard to believe that someone could not be impressed with the artwork contained in this book.
Good Gift.......2007-07-14
I bought this book for my sister on her birthday and it's awesome... but some of the art in this book is not as spectacular as I thought it would be. The book is very enjoyable regardless.
Wonderfully Concise, Marvelous Photographs.......2007-06-22
I got just what I wanted from this book; a vivid depiction of some of the best works of graffiti in the entire world. I was certainly not disappointed. The art presented here ranges from simple, stark icons plastered in street signs to massive photorealistic portraits on the sides of enormous buildings, and everything in between.
A Great Pictorial Documentary of Street Art.......2007-06-01
Beautiful, glossy images, with many styles and influences...
ohhh.... but I like those slate grey concrete walls.......2007-04-05
To the previous reviewer:
Quote "It just goes to show how brainwashed everybody is into thinking this act of vandalism is an artform"
Of course you are entitled to your opinion, however the sad thing is that you are actually the one who is brainwashed. I guess it is not your fault that years of conditioning have created a closed mind that is unable to appreciate art in forms other than a nice little square canvas hanging on your living room wall.
Try to remove those blinkers once in a while you may be surprised.
peace
OK, as for the book itself.....
Pros: It covers a good spectrum of street art from many countries and is loaded with thousands of photos, making it a great coffee table book. When you open the book and flick through a few of the glossy pages the quality is obvious you really feel like you got your moneys worth.
Pretty good mix of moonlight pieces and the legal stuff.
Cons: The text is pretty minimal and offers only a brief intro to the artists, but I guess most people will be buying this book for the pictures anyway.
I also thought it could have included some larger format pictures considering the page size, pretty minor complaint tho.
Most people will find it a nice gentle intro in to the world of graf art, others a useful reference.

This book is a awsome graffit book, with writers from around the world loaded w/ there best pics and a lil doc. on them below ,i really dig it it's FRESH! I also own the other book ''graffiti from 5 connitients'' and i would have too say this book is better but they both make a good collection i would deffinetly recomend this too real graff writers that are looking for something that they can hold on too and enjoy for a long time.
A good variety of talented women.......2007-03-21
A really good selection of women involved in the graffiti scene, that documents a portion of each of their work well.
Altho their are a few obvious female writers that are missing from this book, like Misery, Diva or Barbara and Eva 62, the book generally covers a good selection of writers and has some awesome coverage of some of their work!
An awesome book highly recommended!

Philadelphia Murals.......2007-08-16
I love seeing these as I travel around and I thought I had seen all of them how wrong I was, buy the book and see what you have missed out seeing.
It is a great gift to some one new to the city in my view.
Loved it!.......2007-06-05
Beautifully written with gorgeous pictures! A terrific gift or perfect for your coffee table... I had no idea the City's mural arts program was about so much more than art, it is about imroving the lives of the city's youth by beautifying their environment, keeping them off the streets, and providing a constant in often disrupted lives.
Even More Incredible!!!.......2006-12-08
What's even more incredible about this book than the first "Philadelphia Murals" - is that they found even more spectacular murals - enough to fill a second book!!! And the stories that go with these murals are as heart-felt as the murals themselves!!!
Treat yourself to this book - well, both books - it is a present you won't ever regret!!! I wish I could buy them for you - I wish I had enough money to buy them for everyone!!!

The Very Best In VISUAL SOUP FOR THE SOUL!.......2003-03-31
I bought this book for a CHICANO/A studies course that I had and it really sank inside of me. It shows pictures of the beautiful murals that can be found in CALIFORNIA by some well known chicano/a muralists and others by popularly known organizations such as SPARC. Coincidentally SPARC which stands for SOCIAL PUBLIC ART RESOURCE CENTER are also the community artists that pained a 2, 435 foot long "GREAT WALL OF LOS ANGELES" which can be viewed at Coldwater Cyn and Oxnard St near Los Angeles Valley College. Very inspirational as well. These murals are also depicted in the book, but I recommend breathing in the life of the murals on your very own. It creates a sort of "ZEN" between you and history. Very powerful images!
It includes inspirational and pride-filling pictures from "CHICANO PARK" in San Diego, East Los Angeles Ramona Gardens MURALS, murals from BERKELEY, murals from freeway underpasses, and San Francisco. These of course are only a couple of localities, there are more. It is an empowering book that really lets you see what struggles the Latino people have had to overcome. It depicts scenes from earlier pre-colonial struggles to recent political views. It is a book that you will pick up and want to add to your collection. This is a 2nd copy that I own and thought that I would share the knowledge with others. It really makes you want to go out and see for yourself what beautiful pieces of art lay within the urban chaos that we live in.

spraycan art.......2007-04-12
This book is one of the best documentations of world wide graffiti in its early years (mid 80's). Essential reading for any aspiring graffiti artist or art enthusiast in general. This book has served as inspiration to many artist alike.
Graphitte history .......2007-01-19
I gave this a x-mas gift to my 15 yr old son. He loved it
Classic!.......2005-09-21
This book was my first graffiti book i purchased in the middle of 90's and I have enjoyed a lot from the first day I got it. It has lots of graffiti photos around the world and if you dig colorful pieces made with old-school-style, this is a book you have to buy!
A work of major significance.......2004-05-29
As a public art historian, I recently revisited Spraycan Art. I am told that the sales on this book are approaching 200,000 copies. In 1987 it was the first look at the art form as it traveled out of the NYC subways and around the world and although writers today are more sophisticated with their mastery of the spray can and the imagery they create, the book is still very current in its look at the graffiti world and its place in the Hip Hop scene. It is remarkable to me how Chalfant and Prigoff came to know the key writers of those years, both nationally and internationally. Their contribution to the graf world as professional documentary photographers, authors and resource people has withstood the test of time. It is a must read for current writers, historians or just anyone interested in a unique art form created by youth. Interesting that the book named the art for all time.

Product Description
Turning walls of a city into a giant sized painting is an idea that has been kicking around in history for a long, long time. This book documents mural art in both rural and urban Minnesota. These mural have been created by professional artists as well as sign painters and neighborhood amateurs who paint a wall as a group activity. After a recap of the history of mural painting Moira Harris maps out where each of the murals are with the photographic display. Brief biographies are included for the muralists that were known. The United State Information Agency selected Museum of the Streets to be a part of the "Visual Arts USA Exhibit" (1987), representing the best in American Publishing, and was exhibited in 50 countries throughout the world.
Book Description
First published in 1977, Toward a People's Art remains a classic study of the community-based mural movement that produced hundreds of large-scale wall paintings in the United States and Canada. The authors provide a comprehensive discussion of the muralists, the murals' effects on the community, and the funding these works received.
Those interested in art and social change will welcome this new edition, which represents an ongoing faith in the ideal of participatory democracy as the best way to confront the nation's social problems and in the potential of activist art to have long-term social impact. The introduction describes the era-the late 1960s-and a new afterword looks at the 1980s and 1990s and the continuing commitment to the community-engaged process of making public art.
