Introduction.
"Jenkins is one of us: a geek, a fan, a popcult packrat. He's also an incisive and unflinching critic. His affection for the subject and sharp eye for 'what it all means' are an unbeatable combination. This is fascinating, engrossing and enlightening reading."
Cory Doctorow, author of Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town and co-editor of Boing Boing
Henry Jenkins's pioneering work in the early 1990s promoted the idea that fans are among the most active, creative, critically engaged, and socially connected consumers of popular culture and that they represent the vanguard of a new relationship with mass media. Though marginal and largely invisible to the general public at the time, today, media producers and advertisers, not to mention researchers and fans, take for granted the idea that the success of a media franchise depends on fan investments and participation.
Bringing together the highlights of a decade and a half of groundbreaking research into the cultural life of media consumers,
Fans, Bloggers, and Gamers takes readers from Jenkins's progressive early work defending fan culture against those who would marginalize or stigmatize it, through to his more recent work, combating moral panic and defending Goths and gamers in the wake of the Columbine shootings. Starting with an interview on the current state of fan studies, this volume maps the core theoretical and methodological issues in Fan Studies. It goes on to chart the growth of participatory culture on the web, take up blogging as perhaps the most powerful illustration of how consumer participation impacts mainstream media, and debate the public policy implications surrounding participation and intellectual property.
Book Description
The book publishing industry is going through a period of profound and turbulent change brought about in part by the digital revolution. What is the role of the book in an age preoccupied with computers and the internet? How has the book publishing industry been transformed by the economic and technological upheavals of recent years, and how is it likely to change in the future?
This is the first major study of the book publishing industry in Britain and the United States for more than two decades. Thompson focuses on academic and higher education publishing and analyses the evolution of these sectors from 1980 to the present. He shows that each sector is characterized by its own distinctive `logic' or dynamic of change, and that by reconstructing this logic we can understand the problems, challenges and opportunities faced by publishing firms today. He also shows that the digital revolution has had, and continues to have, a profound impact on the book publishing business, although the real impact of this revolution has little to do with the ebook scenarios imagined by many commentators.
Books in the Digital Age will become a standard work on the publishing industry at the beginning of the 21st century. It will be of great interest to students taking courses in the sociology of culture, media and cultural studies, and publishing. It will also be of great value to professionals in the publishing industry, educators and policy makers, and to anyone interested in books and their future.

Report on a Revolution Underway.......2005-08-25
While mostly concerned with the university presses this book investigates the changes that the digital revolution has brought to book publishing.
This includes:
The rise and fall of the (...) and its thoughts of e-books.
The advent of the super on-line stores with all but infinite inventory - amazon.com and barnsandnoble.com.
The advent of the super chains - (...)
Print on Demand publishing.
With all of these changes underway, the total book output (conventional printed on paper editions) has continued to rise. In 2002 there were 147,120 new books published in the U.S.
Books covering the printing industry in depth do not come around very often. This book represents new research into a revolution that is still in process.
Book Description
The first major illustrated survey of this exciting, new, and experimental field.
Building on the traditions of art history and using advanced technologies, digital artists push the boundaries of artistic expression and explore some of the most urgent social, political, and biological issues facing humankind today.
Traditional activities such as painting and sculpture have been radically transformed by digital techniques and media, while entirely new forms, such as Net art, digital installation, and virtual reality, have emerged as recognized artistic practices, collected by museums, institutions, and individuals the world over. All the diverse forms are featured here: digital prints, sculpture, and interactive installations; DVD and CD-ROMs; digital animation and video; Web sites and software art; new media performance and music. Bruce Wands presents an overview of the main characteristics of each category and discusses in detail specific works selected by a panel of curators as the most important of their kind.
Quotes, statements, and other texts from digital artists, curators, and theorists of new media appear throughout the book to provide further illuminating insights.
An introduction traces the history of digital art from its tentative beginnings in the 1960s to its full emergence in the 1990s, while the final chapter speculates on what the future might bring for this rapidly changing art form. A reference section includes a year-by-year time line of milestones in digital art, both artistic and technological, an extensive bibliography, a glossary, and a list of artists' Web sites and online art projects. 250 color illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
great book, well done.......2007-05-30
THis book is very well done, very nicely printed, everything - well worth the money. - the only thing I didn't like was the fact that it didn't share anything about how the artist created the specific piece (i.e. what programming language or software was used, etc)
the pieces enclosed were just fantastic, and I'm glad I bought the book.
Wands Greatest Work Yet.......2006-09-30
After reading this book and experiencing the incredibly well produced and expertly printed visual images it is clear that this book is one for the times. It is one that can be opened and opened again and again never losing its constant appeal. Very well worth the price and I highly recommend it to everyone.
A recommended pick for any art library........2006-09-24

A useful reference for any student.......2002-04-22
As a writing teacher, I find this book very helpful in explaining research and documentation to my students. It presents basic research books, web sites, and indexes in almost every discipline, which makes it easy to send students working on any topic to the right starting point. There are dozens of books which explain documentation, but this is the best source I've seen for actual research tips.

Book Description
Digital Currents explores the growing impact of digital technologies on aesthetic experience and examines the major changes taking place in the role of the artist as social communicator. Just as the rise of photographic techniques in the mid 1800s shattered traditional views about representation, so too have contemporary electronic tools catalyzed new perspectives on art, affecting the way artists see, think, and work, and the ways in which their productions are distributed and communicated.
Margot Lovejoy recounts the early histories of electronic media for art making - video, computer, the internet - in the new edition of this richly illustrated book. She provides a context for the works of major artists in each media, describes their projects, and discusses the issues and theoretical implications of each to create a foundation for understanding this developing field.
Digital Currents fills a major gap in our understanding of the relationship between art and technology, and theexciting new cultural conditions we are experiencing.

Customer Reviews:
Terrific Guide for Beginning Pointe Dancers, Teachers & Moms .......2007-07-04
This is a great book for teachers or pre-pointe or pointe dancers. Causes you to slow down and really think about what you are teaching and when a dance should go on pointe. My Moms always ask when their daughter will be "ready" Now I have some recommended reading when the simple answers I give are not quite enough for some dancers and parents.
Excellent Resource For Returning Ballerinas.......2007-05-13
The Pointe Book: Shoes, Training & Technique Second Edition
I purchased this book because I am getting back into ballet after several years out due to non-ballet related injuries. I found a lot of useful information, but there were a lot of things that I also wished that the book had included, or had talked more about.
If you have absolutely no experience in ballet, or are not taking any training or don't have an experienced ballerina handy to answer questions, this book is going to be a bit confusing. It is excellent for giving you contact information and company and product reviews for ballet gear providers. However, I did notice that the information contained in the book on some of the companies and their products, particularly regarding pointe shoe sizing, differed markedly from the information provided by the company/manufacturer on their on websites. I would not rely only on the information contained in this book if you are going to purchase pointe shoes using this information. If you are going to order via the internet or mail order, please take the time to either visit a store for a personal fitting, or else contact the manufacturer via telephone, e-mail, or look over their website. Just by chance, I had recently purchased a new pair of pointe shoes by one of the makers listed, and had I used the book's size guide, I would have purchased shoes that were no where near the correct size.
It is an excellent resource for those that are taking class and have instructors to turn to for further explanation, or those that have some degree of en pointe experience. I do wish that the dance sequence sections had been a little more detailed; that section was a big disappointment as I found it was not anywhere near as marvelous as it had been billed.
Overall, there's just no real substitute for an en pointe class with a real, live, knowledgeable instructor in front of you to answer questions. Yet, I wouldn't just write this book off, and I don't think it was a waste to purchase it. It does highlight some good points and information, but it could be a whole lot better--and more complete.
Everything you need to know.......2006-02-27
A really thorough guide to every pointe shoe there is out there, a great history of the technique, and lots of advice on pointe work. A great purchase for anyone interested in pointe work, but there's perhaps so much information on different shoes that it could be confusing for beginners.
A remarkable manual and examination of ballet dancing .......2004-11-13
Now in a new and expanded second edition, The Pointe Book: Shoes, Training, & Technique is a remarkable manual and examination of ballet dancing pointe shoes, and the methodologies used by professionals. Choreographic experts Barringer and Schlesinger apply their years of knowledge and personal experience in the world of fitting and training with pointe shoes to matter-of-factly present how dedicated and athletic individuals achieve remarkable feats of grace and balance. Packed with detail, The Pointe Book is as comprehensive as can be covering everything from different types of shoes to the hazards of learning to walk on one's toes to resources for help with pointe-related injuries and much more. Highly recommended for anyone with a professional or casual interest in the world of ballet.
The pointe book.......2004-07-30
I have found this book very interesting to read, and somewhat helpful. The book is American based which means that not all the information is relevant to an Australian reader such as myself. The second half of the book presents detailed pointe classes which are very helpful, but if you are not familiar with all the terminology you will need a ballet dictionary to use the information. Over all I have found this book interesting and helpful from a student point of view but also think it would be a good read for anyone who loves ballet.

cute.......2006-12-11
this is a cute product and my kids love it but the game pieces are made out of thin cardboard and easily torn. We only have Iza left.
If the pieces were made out of sturdy plastic it would be way better.
The best Dora product I've got for my kid so far.........2006-07-03
This is the best Dora product I have got so far. I think it is also the best electronic toy for 4yrs kids also. It got 5 games in this products. They are mainly mazes and climb-and-slides type games. The product is quite compact, durable and in good quality. My 4yrs old boy can play it for quite long time ( many weeks ), without breaking it into pieces yet, compare with other board games he played. Its too bad that there is no other compatible products/toys in the market.
