A new era in art.......2007-09-27
Not only was l able to correct old bad old habits, l have learnt an incredible amount from this art instruction book. Highly recommended to both beginners and accomplished artists.
Fun & Useful.......2007-07-14
I'm an artist (or, rather, used to be). I consider myself an illustrator, but haven't painted in a long time. This book is great, as she discusses mixing colors, selecting brushes, using the medium and so on. This is a fine book!!!
Artistic Masterpiece!.......2007-05-07
This book IS the oil painting course I've always wanted. I've taken a oil painting course at my local community college, but did not recieve the detailed instruction this book offers. I highly recommend it for the beginner painter. I also recommend Color Mixing Recipes by Walter Foster. It really helps you to get the color just right. It has an index on everything from apples to wet sand.Color Mixing Recipes
great starter but you'll need more books.......2007-04-09
This book was a great starter book and was exceptionally helpful in learning where to start and how to mix colors. It also provides a few step by step classes to get you started. It is a true beginners book, but you'll be looking for new inspiration after you've spent some time with it.
Amazingly good!.......2007-03-23
I would encourage anyone interested in purchasing art books to go to your local library and check some out before you purchase. That is what I did and that is why I bought this wonderful book. Her presentations are very clear and easy to understand. She has carefully constructed lessons, just as if you were taking a class. I like the structure. I like the fact that there is a whole lesson spent learning to use the brush to achieve different techniques. Each lesson takes me about 2-3 hours to complete, but when I am done I feel I have actually made some progress. The lessons build on previous lessons so you actually can see progress from week-to-week. Finally I am sticking to a schedule and actually painting instead of just thinking about it. The practice is what brings the improvement. Her book just makes it easier.

The Ultimate Basic.......2003-03-28
Anyone interested in ONE-Stroke painting (Bless you Donna) must have this as basic reference material - a wonderful gift for any you know who have gotten into this form of painting.
My painting frenzy.......2002-06-27
I bought this book as part of my efforts to learn Dewberry's methods. It has numerous tempting projects, clearly written instructions, and an understanding of its audience's needs. Dewberry's method is the easiest I've ever tried, and the results are outstanding with just a little practice and concentration. I am very grateful to Donna for introducing the world to her painting techniques and I look forward to more books like this one. I have more projects lined up now than I'll be able to finish in a year, but I'm sure I'll complete them and be gratified with the results.
not for beginners.......2001-12-28
The book is very good but not for the beginner, it did not go in to enough detail with the strokes.
Donna Dewberry Onestroke Painting Course.......2000-06-20
this is an excellent book for absolute beginners. There are photographs of brush strokes, excellent instructions and worksheets for practicing strokes. Some of the patterns need to be enlarged. There are several projects for different surfaces including wall murals, fabric painting, benches, signs, stepping stones, pots and vases. Tons of ideas and a variety of flowers in this easy to learn technique.
Easy! Easy! Easy!.......1999-06-08
Yes, that's it....easy methods for the artistically inept person to get beautiful results. Easy to follow instructions, combined with great photos makes learning this new craft a delight.
Thanks, Ms. Dewberry!

excellent beginners book.......2004-10-21
Fabulous book, written especially for beginners who know very little about painting, but also has EXCELLENT pointers for those who are good painters, but love those extra tips.
I've got this one at the top of my shelf and I've underlined, bookmarked pages, etc. It really is an excellent read, but most of all, it has really easy-to-follow instructions and doesn't leave you confused.
If you're just learning to paint, then you really have to get this book. You just have to. It is written SIMPLY and is EASY to read and the book is really thick and hardback and will last a really long time. Well worth the money and something you can use as a reference too.
great book.......2003-06-23
This is a great, comprehensive painting guide for anyone who is interested in getting into oil, acrylics or watercolor painting. It shows all the basics needed including the materials available and needed and it also shows (at least to me) some advanced techniques. Great for any beginner and maybe even intermediate painter. The only complaint I have to make is that I would have liked that the book covered other kinds of painting too, such as glass painting, but I guess it makes sence that they didn't really get into that since it seems to me that it is a classic kind ot painting school.
A huge resource for anyone painting anything!.......2000-11-12
I am very pleased with the work I have created using this book. I had a lot of questions about watercolor and oil painting. Most of the other books I purchased and studied left a lot of the beginner things out....like how to actually mix colors well. The format is wonderful as well, you can go from one exercise to the next a really get some techniques under your belt. The approach to demystifying the products needed for each media was fantastic. You are shown what each product is for and when you might use it. The instuctions in the book include clear step by step pictures...so you don't start feeling lost halfway through the exercise. The best part? There is no rigid rules, the dialogue is personal and encouraging. You flip through it and start itching to paint!

Translated from the French, trompe l'oeil means "deceive the eye," and The Art of Illusion by English artist Janet Shearer shows you how to paint trompe l'oeil murals in your own home. These illusionary murals are surprising "visual jokes" meant to deceive the viewer. As Shearer counsels, "The joke is only effective if you do it well." Projects range from smaller, more focused studies, such as an amusing trio of guinea hens perched above a doorway, to complex, large-scale designs such as a set of spacious, elegant arches that open onto mysterious rooms. You can create fabric or stonework impressions, and even employ trompe l'oeil effects upon furniture. Shearer covers design, perspective, preparation, and equipment before introducing techniques of mural painting. This book will prove a delight not only to interior designers, but to anyone who seeks the challenge of creating bold, imaginative visual effects in their own houses. --Mary Ribesky

Excellent.......2007-07-19
Janet Shearer is a fabulous artist, who is not intimidating in her instruction. She is willing to share her techniques and is very encouraging in her belief that her student can do the same type of work. She does not take herself seriously which adds to the fun of it all. After reading her book, a person just wants to learn more. But most of all, one comes away with a confidence that with practice, one can paint a mural approaching Shearer's quality.
Excellent.......2006-07-03
Very well done and once you get into the actual step by step photographs it is excellent.
For Adventurous Beginners to Advanced Painters.......2005-12-23
I enjoyed this book even though it was much more advanced than my own skill level. I still plan on attempting some of these projects. I'm not going to let a little thing like skill stop me! LOL. Actually, I read a faux painting book that recommended practice on a piece of board or the walls in your garage before trying a new technique, so my garage will probably be covered with various murals and faux techniques.
I first plan on using a projector to get the basic outline and proportions correct then to use the instructions in this book to get the shading and paint techniques just right.
I've taken some classes in the past, watercolor, oil, etc. but I am not artistically gifted. I thought the author did a good job in the prep chapters on equipment, basic instructions, preparation and design/perspective. After this review, she begins several projects. It would have been nice if the first 1-2 projects were at a beginner level and progress to more advanced. I think her murals are very nice even though about half of them are not my own style (several animal/country themes). The photography was great and I though the photos of the steps were clear though it did not take you through every brush stroke. I do think this book is targeted to the intermediate and advanced artist OR for an adventurous beginner.
Start here to become a mural painter.......2005-10-22
Janet Shearer is a very talented mural painter. Her book is wonderful for explaining all you need to start your mural painting journey. She has done fascinating murals: The Monk, Tuscan View, The Arches and others. what the book won't teach you is how to draw...
Realy a must have book for wanna be mural painters.
I have it too.
A must have for artist and beginners alike.......2005-07-20
I am a decorative painter and this was my first book on murals, many followed, but this remained a favorite. It gives You step by step instructions-for less advanced painters, yet it is sophisticated for real artists looking for inspiration, new ideas.
Well, it won't teach You to draw, but if You have any kind of art training,You'll learn easily from this book.Mural painting is not something You learn overnight, but this will be a useful tool
that will answer many of Your technical questions, and grow with You for years to come.

Masterpiece Art of the Greatest Places on Earth.......2006-05-13
This "coffee table" style book works for me because of my passion for golf and my love for famous golf courses. Linda Hartough may be the best landscape artist I've seen in rendering these classic courses with the precision of modern day photography.
What I really got out of this book was a memory recollection of playing a majority of these courses. Looking at these paintings I was thrown into the distant memory of playing Pebble Beach, Olympic Club (Lake Course), Carnoustie, St. Andrews (Old Course), Royal Lytham, Royal Birkdale, and Royal Troon. It was like de ja vu all over again!
Also worth checking out are the Augusta National paintings. This might be her finest work. I especially liked her work on hole #'s 10,11,12, and 15. Augusta is the best course in the world. Second to none.
If Linda Hartough ever publishes paintings of the century old courses of Ireland, in particular the courses designed by Old Tom Morris and Alister Mackenzie; I will buy it. I would really like to see her render and paint the "classic" Irish courses of Ballybunion, Lahinch, Ardglass, Royal Portrush, Newcastle, and Royal County Down. Those classic links style courses are some of the finest on the earth.
Art and golf combine for hole-in-one..........2003-07-18
Hallowed Ground is a beautiful book, capturing spectacular locations from the greatest courses in both America and the United Kingdom.
Included in this hardback collection of art by Linda Hartough is the fabled 7th hole at Pebble Beach, and many holes from Augusta National's Amen Corner. Pieces on each course by Jaime Diaz highlight battles that have taken place on the fairways, and give life to the paintings as showdowns on 18th greens are described.
What makes this book interesting is that when you see the life-like paintings and read about the classic golf that has gone on in that scene, you are able to put yourself in the picture. It is amazing to be able to watch the final round of the 1981 US Open just by reading this book.
To a true fan of golf, or anyone who loves a good coffee table book, Hallowed Grounds is a perfect edition to your collection. Buy this book today, and put yourself in the picture!

Terrific!.......2000-05-09
I was fortunate to have the Golf Channel on a few months ago. Linda Hartough, the artist featured in this book was on with a few of her originals. I immediately purchased the book. After browsing the book 3 or 4 times, taking in her breathtaking artwork, I decided to read a few of the writings by Jaime Diaz on some of my favorite courses. The writings are as enjoyable as the artwork. This book should become required reading for anyone playing the game, especially for golfers new to the game. They would gain a greater appreciation for golf. Thank you Linda Hartough and Jaime Diaz

The Best I've Seen.......2000-03-24
I just ordered a copy; it was out-of-print a month ago. I borrowed a copy for two weeks and it looked like an excellent book, considering that it was in Japanese, of which I can read maybe 2%. Most watercolor books teach a really stiff technique that is very literal ("First I put an underwash of Alizeran Crimson in the water areas and cobalt blue in the sky...") and totally out of touch with the art world of the last 50 years-- the kind of painters who show in County Fairs and Best Westerns. Smith's style is very loose and expressive, he has a wide variety of interests and subject matter, his images are contemporary, he's fun, and some of his landscapes are wonderful. What I like especially is his ability to present fine detail, yet leave a lot of spontaneity of gesture, and really allow the wateriness of watercolor do its thing-- he lets the watercolor meet him halfway without excessively controlling it. That's a man I can learn from. I learned a lot from chapters on tools, and foundational techniques like wet-on-wet. I bet I'll learn even more when I can read it in English.

A wonderful book.......2006-06-09
I bought this based on a handful of Internet recommendations I found, but I worried that it would be yet another generic oil painting book that touched on everything and taught nothing.
It's a wonderful book. It does indeed cover just about everything, but it doesn't just touch on subjects, it covers them in depth. Important subjects, very readable and understandable writing, I'd have to rate this a must have. If you're to have one book on concepts then this is it. Get others with painting demonstrations if you want, or if you need to explore a particular topic in great depth as your skills improve, but start with this one.
Chapters: 1) Basic Structural Drawing 2) Linear Perspective in Cubic Objects 3) Learning Shape Awareness 4) Understanding Values 5) Translating Values into Light and Shadow 6) Modeling the Four Basic Forms 7) Various Light Directions 8) The Behavior of Cast Shadows 9) Basic Color theory 10) How Color Functions in Realism 11) Complementary Color Sequences 12) Light, Shadow, and Texture 13) Color Perception and Harmony 14) Analogous Color Sequences 15) Advanced Color Theory 16) Composition 17) Design 18) Advanced Painting Techniques 19) Color in Landscape 20) Practical Concerns for the Artist
I feel like I can be a teacher of art after reading this!.......2003-03-06
Found this book in my local library and dind't want to return it. I don't really like Gloria Foss's paintings, but she is an amazing teacher. Very well structered, clear, very detailed, covers everything that seemed so confusing to me before. It gave me so much confidence, that I feel like I can be a teacher of art now. It's expensive, but it's the only book you need. It covers media, tools, drawing, perspective, color theory, 3-dimensional shadowing, composition, design and everything is easily understandable. The chapter on design gave me more information than a course in interior design that I took.
I'm buying it!.......2002-07-15
I got this book out of the library among many other techniques books in various mediums on painting, composition, drawing, color theory, and this one is the best and most clearly comprehensive one I've read. Pricey, but I am buying it as a reference book.
Excellent reference book for beginner or advanced........2002-05-20
It's not often one finds a book that is this usefull. Filled with good advice and examples, color and B&W, that would be usefull to beginning or experienced painters. This book refrains from trying to teach a particular style of painting. Rather it covers subjects of interest to all painters in oil. I am primarily an acrylic painter but that has never detracted from the usefullness of this book. There are chapters on structural drawing, perspective, modeling, basic and advanced color theory, composition and design, color in landscape, even "Practical concerns for the emerging artist." The color theory chapters are particularly good, with examples and exhaustive color tables to help one learn one of the most difficult parts of painting, the use of color. One may or may not like Foss's style of painting, but this book is designed to help you learn the techniques that will allow you to find your own style.
Teach yourself to paint.......2000-11-08
The writter has successfuly bring a live a classroom lesson as well as a complete guide to deal with oil painting. I've read a few other similiar book and this book had demostrate a true dedication to education than just oil painting for hobbies. I had a wonderful time reading it and learning to paint. I hope to own a copy of this book as my own.
