Book Description

Is it really possible to change the structure and function of the brain, and in so doing alter how we think and feel? The answer is a resounding yes. In late 2004, leading Western scientists joined the Dalai Lama at his home in Dharamsala, India, to address this very question–and in the process brought about a revolution in our understanding of the human mind. In this fascinating and far-reaching book, Wall Street Journal science writer Sharon Begley reports on how cutting-edge science and the ancient wisdom of Buddhism have come together to show how we all have the power to literally change our brains by changing our minds. These findings hold exciting implications for personal transformation.

For decades, the conventional wisdom of neuroscience held that the hardware of the brain is fixed and immutable–that we are stuck with what we were born with. As Begley shows, however, recent pioneering experiments in neuroplasticity, a new science that investigates whether and how the brain can undergo wholesale change, reveal that the brain is capable not only of altering its structure but also of generating new neurons, even into old age. The brain can adapt, heal, renew itself after trauma, and compensate for disability.

Begley documents how this fundamental paradigm shift is transforming both our understanding of the human mind and our approach to deep-seated emotional, cognitive, and behavioral problems. These breakthroughs show that it is possible to reset our happiness meter, regain the use of limbs disabled by stroke, train the mind to break cycles of depression and OCD, and reverse age-related changes in the brain. They also suggest that it is possible to teach and learn compassion, a key step in the Dalai Lama’s quest for a more peaceful world. But as we learn from studies performed on Buddhist monks, an important component in changing the brain is to tap the power of mind and, in particular, focused attention. This is the classic Buddhist practice of mindfulness, a technique that has become popular in the West and that is immediately available to everyone.

With her extraordinary gift for making science accessible, meaningful, and compelling, Sharon Begley illuminates a profound shift in our understanding of how the brain and the mind interact. This tremendously hopeful book takes us to the leading edge of a revolution in what it means to be human.

4 out of 5 stars 'Focus & Attention.".......2007-09-29

This book is based in part on an Oct.2004 meeting bewtween the Dalai Lama & a group of western neurologists & psychologists to discuss the mutability of the human brain. The main positives of this book are that it is meticulously researched, & yet concise. But, despite the title it is not a self-help book. One should not expect any life altering experiences. This is a history of neuro-plasticity, a cerebral trait discovered by neuro-scientific experiments some twenty years ago. The books central message is that the brain/mind can change when we want it to. The techniques of mental discipline can be learned, & our negative traits reduced. Here eastern philosophy & meditation meets western neuro-science. When the reader is interested in the latest developments for treating dysfunction & depression, or in the mental deterioration brought by aging this is a good place to start. Basically, the adult brain retains much of the plasticity of the developing brain, to change the circuitry that weaves neurons into the networks that allow us to think, feel, dream, remember, & suffer. Some findings show that changes can occur by certain mental activities: like learning a language, or playing a musical instrument. To a degree, the neuro-science does blend with the buddhist belief that our reality can be created by our own thoughts & projections. I have learned that meditation can truly help alter ones feelings, especially in dealing with grief & depression. The book explains in detail how various experiments, training methods, & therapies can change the adult brain. It has shown a remarkable ability to cope with unexpected changes, like blindness, recovering from a stroke, etc. The crucial changes in the brain can willfully overcome neural problems like dyslexia, etc by changing its own circuitry. However, the book does not actually answer all of the questions it poses. I was also a bit taken back that the Dalai Lama would condone animal testing? His statment that the larger human community would benefit from the experiments felt expedient to me. Still, this is a four star book for all the data it contains.

5 out of 5 stars Surprising science: new about neuroplasticity. .......2007-09-06

For nearly a century, scientific dogma held that the brain is immutable, fixed by genes and early upbringing. Wall Street Journal science writer Sharon Begley recently visited the frontiers of neuroscience and returned with a news flash: The dogma is wrong. Researchers have discovered that the brain remains plastic, lifelong. This creates new frontiers: Stroke victims can rewire their brains using challenging exercises; deaf people can repurpose dormant auditory cortexes for other tasks; and blind people can begin to "see" patterns of Braille dots using a seemingly dead visual cortex. Suspecting that they were on to a general pattern, researchers soon looked for similar changes in "normal" brains. Working repetitively on your golf swing, playing the piano or learning a language, they found, also change your brain in lasting, important ways, as does practicing compassion toward others. Begley arrives with heavyweight friends: a foreword by the Dalai Lama and a preface by Daniel Goleman of Emotional Intelligence. If you want to understand how the brain keeps working, and how to make yours do more of what you want it to, we think you should start here. Your brain will thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Change your Life.......2007-08-23

Reading this book will change your life by providing scientific proof that humans can change their brains through meditation. The book is readily accessible to the non-scientific/technical reader and the sections involving the Dalai Lama are fascinating. Those interested in neuroscience, meditation, improving one's quality of life, or in the mysteries of the brain will enjoy this book. Educators and parents will also will find this book as inspiration because it suggests a radical new approach to educating and developing young minds.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding our brain.......2007-07-12

Personal renewal through understanding how the brain works is a subject I am very interested in. This book gets you into the science behind this most promising area of new understanding. It is a subject we all need to know more about - science has learned so much about it in the last 15 years - and this book is a very good place to begin your study of this most important developing area of knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars stunning.......2007-07-05

Train your Mind, Change your Brain is a fascinating look at new discoveries in neuroplasticity and their relation to Buddhist practice. Probably the most salient thing with which I came away from this book is the sense of man's self-determinacy and ability to improve himself. In the age-old debate between heredity and environment, the book highlights new discoveries weighing in heavily on the side of environment. Victor Frankl would be proud.

While the information given is often in relation specifically to Buddhist meditation practice, there is very little material here that is not directly applicable to the contemplative tradition of any religion. For that matter, most of what is presented here does not posit religious beliefs at all - for instance, how exploitation of neuroplasticity can correct dyslexia, help people recover use of paralyzed limbs after strokes, etc.; and how continued research into neuroplasticity may help reverse the mental/neural effects of aging.

Begley writes in a very accessible way - the book was quite readable even for a layman like me. It does help to have a basic knowledge of the principles of Buddhism before starting with this book - I'd recommend reading The Art of Happiness by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Howard Cutler as background.

5 out of 5 stars Showing Our True Colors.......2005-03-05

Mary Miscisin's book was outstanding! It was a fun and easy read, yet full of informative and interesting ideas about people and how and why they act the way they do. Having been an educator for many years, this is THE book I could have used long ago to better interact with my students and their parents. The book's content makes easy what Myers-Briggs tries to do. I would recommend it to anyone who has a desire to deal more effectively with children or adults.

5 out of 5 stars Color Me Satisfied.......2005-03-04

Easy to read, full of wisdom. I never could figure out how to use Myers-Briggs. I can use this everyday with everyone I meet. Useful for all ages, both sexes. Entertaining presentation helps emphasize a language of Colors that is non-threatening, non-emotional, and constructively wonderful

5 out of 5 stars Life-long Learning!.......2005-03-04

As an educator with 30 years experience in the classroom and in coaching, I wish I could have read Mary Miscisin's book 30 years ago! I would have been a much better teacher and coach because I would have had a much better understanding of my students and athletes and how to more effectively communicate with them based on their colors. I couldn't put the book down because I kept meeting past students as well as people I know now represented in Miscisin's creative and stimulating examples. "Showing Our True Colors" was so challenging and packed with information, yet so simple to understand and implement. Every parent, teacher, and coach ought to read the book. It is a must for couples and anyone who wants to communicate more effectively. Where was this book when I needed it? Oh, yeah, I still do need it today. Thanks Mary!

5 out of 5 stars Easy-to-Use Reference Guide.......2004-11-16

Miscisin and company do an excellent job of taking a complex topic, stripped it of the "psycho-babble" that can turn you off (or at least give you a headache) and presented it in a fun, easy to use guide on different styles. As a Human Resources professional. As a person who just wants to know more about me and those with whom I interact, it's been of phenomenal help. Most helpful is the section on "when colors fade". It has provided insight into how to manage and assist people who are in the middle of burnout and are heading downhill personally and professionally. Read it because it is interesting and informative. Hang on to it because it is because you'll keep referring to it.

I just bought this this book to send to my daughter who is a freshman in college. My mom bought an early edition for me when I went to college, and I bought an inbetween edition as a 30 year old. This is an essential reference for women of all ages. I love that it has informed intelligent women about their bodies since its first publication.

I just got this book and wished I'd had it in my teens, twenties, thirties, but thankfully now in my 40's I do. I bought two copies used. The 1984 edition and the 1998 edition. Now after reading the reviews for the 2005 edition I am going to get that new. The 2005 edition is the 8th edition and in 35 years has never gone out of print.

Truly a wealth of information and a treasure to have found. This is the kind of book you can flip thorough and start reading on any page and find something of interest. They even have their own internet site containing information about this book and related books.

The book is lavishly illustrated with drawings and photographs (including in the 1984 & 1998 editions an iconic one by Tee A. Corinne of a disabled person making love in a wheel chair).

The subjects cover every issue that a woman can encounter -

4 out of 5 stars Incredibly useful.......2007-01-16

I love this book and I sent it out to all my family and friends as holiday gifts this year. I love that it shows many taboo issues as normal, because they are.

The only thing that upset me was that they never explicitly suggested that the reader use at least two methods of birth control. They almost implied that if your one method didn't work, you could just get an abortion. I felt that they should have been adamant about the two-or-more method particularly after reading how often a method would fail in every one hundred uses.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource........2007-01-12

Provides a comprehensive, straight-forward, open-minded approach to all issues of women. Purchased to update my former copy, which I used as a resource when I taught high school students.

William Buhlman's books are the bomb diggity! I absolutely loved Secret of the Soul and Adventures Beyond the Body. Very well laid out books, easy to read and understand; and best of all, they contain personal experiences from people all over the world. By far the two best books I have read on the subject! Well done Bill!

5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating and Wide-Ranging Exploration of the Out of Body Experience.......2006-11-07

I've read a large number of books on Astral Projection and this one was completely different for its range of topics. The author sent out a survey and received first-hand accounts from 16,000 people who have had various degrees of out-of-body experiences from accidental to controlled, from enjoyable to unwelcome. Buhlman lets the stories speak for themselves, and categorizes the experiences by subject: meetings and messages beyond the body, childhood OBEs, combat- and trauma-induced experiences and transformational experiences. Buhlman also discusses what can be expected from an OBE and what benefits there are.

Chapter 6 was unique in the entire literature of OBEs: could alien abductions be unexpected out-of-body experiences? Buhlman does a masterful job of analyzing the reported experiences of alien abductees and drawing parallels to the sensations of OBEs.

His "Brief History" of OBEs is an eye-opening re-examination of descriptions of the mystical experience, synthesizing historical and biblical accounts from the Egyptians through the Greeks and Tibetans, to the Christian and Sufi mystics, including Swedenborg, Yogis, Aborigines, Native Americans and Shamans. It's all too brief, serving to point the way for the reader to research further, but does argue for the ubiquitous OBE in our religions and spiritual paths.

Chapter 8, "A New Vision of Death and Dying," is another unique feature of this book in the Astral Travel library. OBEs are not dealt with as simply enjoyable anomalies in consciousness, but as life-changing spiritual experiences demanding a transformation of our definition of reality.

The "Art and Practice" section of the book deals specifically with the sensations the practitioner will feel when attempting to leave the body. The trance state is discussed, and the all-important vibrational phenomena are revisited throughout the book until they are pretty much memorized. Very few other books on Astral Projection are so detailed in their descriptions of what you can expect to feel when trying to leave the body. They may tell you what to imagine or visualize, but then you do the practices and then feel/see/hear things and wonder if you're on the right track. For example, the paralysis and vibrations that frighten many people are the very signals of an imminent OBE!

Many different visualizations are offered, and readers can choose the ones that appeal to them, or the ones that they find easiest to work with: climbing, floating, rocking, rotating, rotating, and so on.

Other techniques that may aid the reader in leaving the body are discussed briefly, from drumming and medicinal plants to meditation and brain-wave technology. A chapter on trouble-shooting is very helpful for those experiencing fear or distractions.

Like anything, Astral Projection can be learned through practice. No book can guarantee an OBE; that depends on your motivation and power of concentration, not to mention your ability to persevere through failure and learn from your mistakes. But "Secret of the Soul" is a wide-ranging and fascinating read even for earth-bound souls.

4 out of 5 stars Both book and CD was fantastic !!!.......2006-09-10

This book is one of the best OBE books. You looking for OBE techniques ? You can found more than 20 in this book !!! You looking for protection techniques while OBE ? O yes, you can found them here. How about to guide some one whose dying ? You can found it here too. About similarity OBE with Alien's abduction ? Yup, it's here too....
I also will review CD version of this book. It's contains 4 CD : 1. The Christos Technique (you can find it from other OBE books). 2. The Energy Body Technique (similar with Denning-Philips and Crowleys.. transfer your consciousness to astral body). 3. The Rope Technique (read Astral Dynamics by Robert Bruce !). 4. The Shaman / Bird Technique (you can find it in Adventures Beyond the Body..the best, number one.. OBE book!). If you like practice with guiding.. this is for you. The sound (background) strong enough to direct your mind to non physical realms.

5 out of 5 stars Just OK.......2006-02-27

I enjoyed Buhlman's first book more than this one. At times, the information really drags.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on astral projection!.......2005-10-25

I have read several books about astral projection and found "The Secret of the Soul" to be the most practical and useful. I liked the personal stories combined with the wide selection of easy to understand how-to methods. Most other books teach only one approach for initiating out-of-body experiences and are really limited in their scope. I think this book is a must read for anyone interested in the topic.

I would like to say that in addition to reading "The Secret of the Soul", you should read "Adventures Beyond the Body" - William Buhlman's first book. There is such a wealth of knowledge and experience in these two books.

Book Description

The Mayan Calendar may well provide the basis for the understanding of creation. In this extraordinary publication, Carl Calleman shows us how the Mayan Calendar combines science and sprituality to unlock the secrets of the universe and provide clues to the future of mankind.

1 out of 5 stars Masonic Propaganda.......2007-09-20

You have to love Masonic propaganda. The roots of all this Mayan/Atlantean "mysteries" lies in 19th century creators of the New Age movement, most famous of which was the Freemason Mrs.Blavatsky.

Masons are putting together a One world government (taking shape under European Union, and the coming Rockefeller-sponsored North American Union)...which needs a one world religion. Its easier to control people if they all believe the same religious nonsense that you feed to them.

Masons invented communism (look up Marx and Mazzini), and succeeded in killing about 200 million people, but it didn't work in wiping out Christianity, which was its original intent.

So they try to invent new religions, fuse Christianity with all sorts of New Age concepts (like this book)...etc...but so far they've failed to come up with anything that would catch on.
Maybe they are still experimenting...

It will still take a few more decades to bring about one world government with continental "unions"...so they have plenty of time to pitch ideas to people and see what works. By 2013, the Mayan Calendar will be long gone and forgotten...

I get a good laugh out of those reviewers who consider this a "scholarly" work, when in fact almost none of the ideas presented can be scientifically corroborated.

2 out of 5 stars A Bit on the Technical Side.......2007-07-30

Textbook style, in-depth analysis of the Mayan Calendar and the formation of the civilization itself. Devotes very little to the prophecy as it realtes to our present day. Not an easy read.

5 out of 5 stars deeply compelling.......2007-05-14

I am so appreciative for this book and all the work it represents. Speaking for myself, I feel so benefitted by the perspective of a picture this big, this ancient and this relevant to events throughout time itself. I have been interested in the Mayan Calendar in times past but never have I been so "grabbed" and held inthralled by the potential of evolving consciousness. What a gift at this timie of so much shifting that all can feel but few can identify sufficiently to draw up a map for living. This book inspires to bend and flex in all the right ways and not to fear but to accept that what is coming will look, feel and be very different from what we are used to.

1 out of 5 stars DiaGnosis: This is an invention, and not the Maya calendar.......2007-02-18

Extracts from the online disgnosis2012 (dotcodotukslashcalldothtm) review that also apperars in the book Beyond 2012:

Swedish researcher Carl Johan Calleman noticed that since the tzolkin can be used as a map of the 13-baktun cycle, it could theoretically also be applied to the larger cycles that have been found on a few stelae, (a stela or stele is an upright lab or pillar with an inscription or sculpture and the plural form is stelae) such as stela 1 at the Coba - a ruined Maya city in the forest sixty miles east of Chichen Itza in the Yucatan. Then he noticed that if this is continued upwards, a cycle is discovered that is close to the scientifically accepted age of the universe. To explain this further, we must first look at the extended version of the Long Count calendar.

Twenty kin or days is one uinal (20 days); eighteen uinals is one tun (360 days; twenty tuns is one katun- 7,200 days (about 20 years); twenty katuns is one baktun - 144,000 days (about 400 years); twenty baktuns is one pictun - 2,880,000 days (about 8,000 years); twenty pictuns is one kalabtun - 57,600,000 days (about 160,000 years); twenty kalabtuns is one kinchiltun - 1,152,000,000 days (about 3.154 million years); twenty kinchiltuns is one alautun (about 63.08 million years); twenty alautuns is one hablatun (about 1.26 billion years); twenty hablatuns is about 25.2 billion years.

What Calleman realized is that thirteen hablatuns would be equal to about 16.4 billion years, which is close to the usual estimate given for the age of the universe; about 15 billion years. If the pattern of the 13 x 20 Sacred Calendar or tzolkin encodes larger sacred cycles, such as the 13-baktun cycle, he reasoned that a whole cosmology of 13-unit cycles, rather than twenty-unit ones, could be represented in a nine-step pyramid form, such as the Pyramid of the Jaguar at Tikal, Guatemala, or the Temple of Inscriptions at Palenque, Mexico (the one that conceals the tomb of the ancient Maya ruler, Pacal). In this way, the top or ninth level would represent a 13-uinal period, while the bottom or first level would represent a 13-hablatun period.

So, the topmost layer represented the 260-day tzolkin of thirteen uinals. The next level down would be a 260-uinal cycle of thirteen tuns. The next level down would be a 260-tun cycle of thirteen katuns (this is a cycle normally known as the Short Count). Under this would be a 260-katun cycle of thirteen baktuns (this is the familiar 13-baktun cycle). Below this would be a 260-baktun cycle of thirteen pictuns, and so on. In this way, we would have a nine-level pyramid, where each layer is structured like the tzolkin, but twenty times larger than the layer above.

This is a very intriguing idea, showing how the development and evolution of the universe could be encoded into the structure of the Maya calendrical systems, from the creation of the universe until its final consummation at the end-point. At the junctions of each level of the pyramid, humanity gains another "frame of consciousness", and although Calleman says that speculation on the consciousness that will be accessed at the "summit of the pyramid" would seem to be "almost pointless", he does indulge the reader a little. It will be an end of time, in which no more calendars are needed:

"...the attainment of a time-less cosmic consciousness, and an experience of unity with All-That-Is in its fullest sense, a disappearance of the line dividing life from death. Although many that live today have had temporary experiences of such a cosmic consciousness, these have only been temporary, due to our limiting frame of consciousness. At the end of Creation this may no longer be so and the eternal life may in fact manifest as a time-less cosmic consciousness."

If this sounds familiar, maybe that is because it is based on "several ancient scriptures" that turn out to be mainly the Book of Genesis and the Book of Revelation.

Calleman supports the True Count, as opposed to the Lounsbury correlation, but he realised that his theory would be much neater if only the Long Count had ended on the day 13 Ahau in the tzolkin, instead of 4 Ahau. Incredibly, he decided that the Maya had got it wrong, and says that although he still agrees with the True Count of the tzolkin, the correlation between the Long Count and the tzolkin was wrong. This is something nobody had questioned before, since there has never been any doubt of the tzolkin - to- Long Count correlation; it was set by the Maya and wherever a stela shows the Long Count, it shows the relevant tzolkin date. Previous arguments had concerned how the calendars relate to the Gregorian calendar, not how they relate to each other. Calleman criticized Arguelles for creating his own New Age Dreamspell count, yet has not seen the parallels to his own creation. In fact, he says in reference to later "invented" tzolkin correlations, "Such disregard of the calendrical knowledge of the Classical Maya is not likely to lead to truth", but this applies equally to his own invented Long Count correlation. The result of the change in correlation means that Calleman sees the 13-baktun cycle as starting on June 17th 3115 BC and ending on 28th October 2011.

There is a problem, however, because dividing by twenty works fine until we get to the level beneath the summit of the pyramid, when we find that thirteen tuns is 4680 days, and a twentieth of this is 234 days, not 260 days. Calleman admits this, where he refers to "The short universal cycle of 2011, probably totalling only 13 x 18 = 234 days, but possibly 260 days..." Two diagrams on p.77 of Calleman's book differ on the length of this last cycle - one says 13 x 20 days (260) and the other says 13 x 18 days (234). If the tzolkin level (the Universal Underworld) is shortened to 234 days, so that the pattern (of each level being a twentieth the size of the one above) is retained, then the tzolkin as the key 260-unit "filtration pattern of divine light" is unable to form the top level of the pyramid. Alternatively, if the 260-unit tzolkin is retained as the top level of the pyramid, so that each level consists of 260 sub-units, then the top level will be only an eighteenth the size of the level below, whereas all other levels are a twentieth the size of the level below. Since both solutions lose the symmetry of the pyramid, Calleman is clearly undecided as to which is correct. This brings the validity of the whole pyramid construct into question.

If Calleman had stuck with the Maya Long Count correlation, the idea would have remained an interesting concept, but the idea that the tzolkin "ends" on the day 13 Ahau and "begins" on the day 1 Imix is, in fact, "based upon a misconception of the tzolkin calendar" due to modern conventions in representing it, according to John Major Jenkins. Therefore the alteration to the Long Count was not necessary, and Calleman could have presented the idea without resorting to inventing his own correlation. Calleman now has quite a following, and supporters are presenting his theory as "The Mayan Calendar" or saying, "The Maya say..." when they should say, "Carl Calleman says..." His book is titled The Maya Calendar: Solving the Greatest Mystery of Our Time, but his solution is being taken as the genuine Maya Calendar, when it is an attempted explanation that got out of hand and ended up "massaging" the facts to fit the explanation. Amazingly, José Arguelles has written the introduction to Calleman's sequel book, just as several websites are attempting to combine the theories of Arguelles and Calleman... and even Jenkins. It seems that people are so wary of throwing out the baby with the bathwater, that they have poured all the water into one bath, inadvertently drowning the baby.

5 out of 5 stars Judge Only for YOU..........2007-01-12

Do not take the words of anyone else - especially when it comes to this book. If you want opinions, read ALL of the reviews on this book, not just the negative ones which seem to display most prominently.

I do not know what standards Mr. Jonathan Jett-Parmer thinks this book does not meet, nor does he state what his qualifications are in the subject material. He tells of the the relevance of Dr. Calleman's other works and their apparent qualifications which DO meet with the standards of Mr. Jett-Parmer. However, he does not provide any reasons for such assertions and apparent contradictions.

If he would be so kind as to update his review I think we could all benefit from a more detailed explanation for the opinions he has every right to express.

I would not be surprised if it took most people six months to a year of effort before the material in this book began to sink in and feel like one was learning it, instead of being confused by it. The reason is that it addresses using a calendar other than the one we all share worldwide - the Gregorian calendar. The calendar itself, no matter which one we used at any point in the past, present or future, is the basis for our conscious reality. That is why the book seems like it is not as easy to comprehend as perhaps other readers would expect. I know that I felt dumbfounded and walked away from it several times.

The reason it because the idea that we would use a calendar other than the one we know worldwide is truly a shock to your senses. We don't know how to even think about a calendar other than the one we know. Think about it: have you ever thought once about using another calendar?

I guarantee you have not - not to replace the one we all sharez. How about a year that was not 365 days per year? What about a year that was actually 360 days per year? The same as 360 degrees in a circle? Don't worry - because in this book there is no either/or with the calendar: There are 17 in total, one called the Haab that tracked the solar orbit of 365.2421 days per year and is more accurate than the Gregorian.

On solar orbit, why is that meaningful to our planet, besides the seasons, planting and harvesting to grow food? Why are we so obsessed with how accurate ANY system is in precision timekeeping of the Earth around the sun in a year? I think down to 4 decimal places is good for me.

Would it make sense to have alternatives to try and see if an even 360 day per Galactic Year system would be more likely to relate to other systems in the galaxy and universe? Is it safe to say that, at the very least, the time it takes our little planet to go around the sun in a year means nothing to anyone not on our planet? Why would it? IT ONLY MATTERS IN THIS LITTLE SOLAR ORBIT.

The rest of the universe is based on spherical shapes and sizes, of varying ellipses and precessions and so on, but they are all ultimately 360 degrees round. In the span of thousands to millions to billions of years and years it is the mathemathical relationships that deterine the flow of evolution. That does not mean that Keplers Laws or Newtons Laws are no less important - just that they are only important if what you use them for is relevant - like landing on the surface of a planet. Or putting a sattellite into orbit. Or blasting off from the surface of the planet.

But tracking the progress of our evolution, over 16.64 billion years ago until now, and culminating on October 28, 2011? That is mathematics, and the planets and orbits REPRESENT how it all works together. But the celestial mechanical motions from one day, month or year don't matter in the grand scheme of things. And besides that, if this book is wrong, then there is nothing to fear. Right?

but I am an expert on this book as well as the books by Mr. John Major Jenkins and Jose Arguelles: Jenkins and Arguelles are BOGUS disinformation based on unprovable assertions. This book is based on mathematics and makes no claims that are not verified. Are there assertions and deep thoughts as to the meaning of the math and how that should be interpreted? Of course. As with any book, on any subject, especially a subject as controversial and difficult to comprehend as the Mayan Civilization, if someone is asking you to ignore something for no apparent reason, or they make spurious claims that seem 'fishy' then wonder more about why they are working so hard to close your mind. Keep your mind open at all times, judge for yourself and of any books on the Mayans BUY ONLY THIS BOOK. It is not perfect, but it is the closest to the Truth that we have right now. Thank you.

Book Description

With The Measure of Our Days, Dr. Jerome Groopman established himself as an eloquent new voice in the literature of medicine. In these eight moving portraits, he offers us a compelling look at what is to be learned when life itself can no longer be taken for granted.

These stories are diverse--from Kirk, an aggressive venture capitalist determined to play the odds with controversial chemotherapy treatments; to Elizabeth, an imperious dowager humbled by a rare blood disease; to Elliott, who triumphs over leukemia and creates for himself a definition of success--but each, in the words of Maggie Scarf, "transmute the misery of terrible suffering into a marvelous celebration of the sweetness of human life." Far from medical case studies, these are spiritual journeys of questioning and self-awareness, embarked on by the physician as well as the patient.

5 out of 5 stars Touching and thought-provoking.......2007-07-07

As a nurse who has worked in Oncology, I have found this book very interesting and thought-provoking. It brought back many memories of patients and similar situations. Could anyone ask for a physician any more compassionate than Dr. Groopman? Something for all in the medical field to strive for.

5 out of 5 stars The most touching book on relationships between a good doctor and his patients..........2007-04-14

I don't remember why or where I bought this book. I think it came highly recommended to me, as I have worked in HIV research and bioethics for the disabled for years, not as a job, but because it is what I care about. I think I accidently put this book up to sell, thinking it was another book on these same issues I had read years ago. When I got it out to send to another reader, I realized I hadn't read it. I can read quite fast when necessary and after the first few pages in this book, I realized I did not want to send it until I had read the whole thing. So I read it in one evening, and I am so glad I did.

After just undergoing a horrendous couple of years with my own personal physician who threw medication at me in hopes something would help (and he just made things worse), I needed to be reminded there are outstanding and wonderful physicians out there still who see their work not as a way to make money but a way to make a living and provide for their families while still doing the most they can for humanity. I'd read Groopman's work before. He is a very prolific writer, as well as a physician and researcher into HIV and cancer. I don't know how he does it. The man must not sleep ever, and that also earns my admiration. His patients are not easy ones. They are the more difficult ones, and he see his job as being to give them the most time he can possibly squeeze out of their conditions. And that time he gives them, he makes them as comfortable as possible and as able to continue their life's work...this is what is meant by providing people with chronic illness and even illness whose end result is death with a quality of life equal to that, or better than that, than the life they had lived before. Why? Because they know their time is limited, and they seek to fill their remaining time with the most they can stuff into it. EAch of these individuals have different ideas of what constitutes a meaningful life, and each of them learn something from Groopman during their time under his care, and their stories not only taught Groopman something, but in this book they teach the reader something.

I'd always been one of those people who didn't want to undergo chemotherapy for a cancer that would end in death anyhow. But now I understand from Groopman why you would prolong your time here, as long as it could be done in such a way as to achieve my goals and those for my family and friends, and give something back to others as I have always wanted to do (but often had to put to the side while I raised my family).

This is one of the most compassionate books I have ever read. I hate to send it away but at the same time, I want others to read it. It teaches us to put into practice our religious beliefs rather than just spout them. It isn't enough to say 'this is what I believe.' Groopman teaches us that we can put our religious beliefs into daily practice and do the most good by doing that. I would definitely recommend this book as required reading for all students in all medical fields, even research...as we too often lose sight of the very human faces that we are researching for. By putting a human face on these usually unseen people it forces us to work harder and with more focus on moral behavior, whether as researchers, or as medical personnel in daily contact with those who are suffering. Our job is not to judge, but rather to alleviate suffering... Groopman is an outstanding example to all of us, and I hope to incorporate his teachings in my own life and my own work...

5 out of 5 stars Departing into darkness.......2006-06-27

If Sherwin Nuland hadn't already written "The Way We Die," Jerome Groopman could easily have used the title for this book. Dr. Groopman specializes in cancer, blood-disease, and AIDs patients, so he is very familiar with the way we die. His emphasis in this book is more on the spiritual aspect of dying, although there is also plenty of physical agony and degradation in "The Measure of Our Days."

If I had to sum up the book's theme, it would be: patients who love and are loved struggle hardest to live, sometimes way beyond the point where physicians have given up on them. When they finally do die, their deaths are more fulfilling (easier? better?) than those who die with full wallets and empty hearts.

That sounds kind of hokey, like "Love Story" as written by a doctor, but Dr. Groopman handles the theme very effectively. He's even slightly more optimistic than in his book "Second Opinions," although no one in "The Measure of Our Days" dies as romantically as Ali McGraw. Just the opposite. Most of Dr. Groopman's patients in this book die after extensive chemotherapy, surgery, and physical therapy--the whole painful and nauseous armamentarium of modern medicine (If it hasn't yet struck you how closely physicians resemble the monks of the Spanish Inquisition, you've probably never undergone chemotherapy. Both wield their instruments for our own good).

"The Measure of Our Days" speaks like a modern day Koheleth (Ecclesiastes):

"A man may have a hundred children and live a long life; but however many his days may be, if he does not get satisfaction from the good things of life..., then I maintain that the still-born child is in better case than he. Its coming is an empty thing, it departs into darkness, and in darkness its name is hidden..."

Change 'get satisfaction from the good things of life' to 'love' and I believe you will understand Dr. Groopman's measure of our days.

5 out of 5 stars inspiring tales of truth and human dignity.......2006-05-10

An excellent book of choice for anyone looking to find meaning in the field of health care, who feels swept away by torrents of robotic practices of academic medicine and scientific prejudices.

5 out of 5 stars The Measure of our Compassion through the measure of our days.......2005-12-05

It takes a special person to care for others. Compassion for people comes in different ways and Groopman finds an excellent way to blend both: medicine the way we know it and kind and considerate way to offer care and hope.
This book is a great reading for anyone.
Highly recommended!

Book Description

Pia Mellody creates a framework for identifying codependent thinking, emotions and behaviour and provides an effective approach to recovery. Mellody sets forth five primary adult symptoms of this crippling condition, then traces their origin to emotional, spiritual, intellectual, physical and sexual abuses that occur in childhood. Central to Mellody's approach is the concept that the codependent adult's injured inner child needs healing. Recovery from codependence, therefore, involves clearing up the toxic emotions left over from these painful childhood experiences.

4 out of 5 stars If you know you're not crazy but at the same time you think you are ...........2007-07-30

When a few month ago a person who I felt and thought was most important to me came into my life and my husband disagreed, I was thrown into a huge personal crisis. Little did I know much less understand that the heart of the problem lay in my co-dependence. I was very lucky because through friends of mine I found a therapist who knew about and taught me about co-dependence. Suddenly all of the contradictions - which seemed to indicate to me that I must be crazy - started to make sense. To supplement and deepen my understanding my therapist suggested reading Pia Mellody's `Facing Co-dependence'.

Pia Mellody herself is a recovering co-dependent and that she knows from personal experience what she's talking about is very evident in her book. In part I she starts by describing co-dependence and explaining very concisely where it comes from. What she calls the 5 core symptoms are: expressing appropriate levels of self-esteem, setting functional boundaries, owning and expressing your own reality, taking care of your adult needs and wants and experiencing and expressing your reality moderately.
In part II she explains what she thinks are the five natural characteristics of children and how functional homes deal with them. While functional parents will help their children to develop these characteristics properly dysfunctional ones will not. I don't have children but still I found it very interesting and helpful to read Pia's description of how a child will be treated in a functional home. It's a very helpful part of the book no matter whether you use that information to compare your own childhood experiences to what it should have been or could have been or whether you use it as your guideline to treat your own children functionally or for both.
Dysfunctional parenting forces the child to defend itself against painful or threatening experiences by developing dysfunctional behavior patterns that are often continued into adulthood because (a) they worked so well when they were needed and (b) these children were never taught to behave functionally.
In Part III Pia describes many forms of abuse and explains how they relate to her understanding of co-dependence. It's amazing how many of our acceptable parenting techniques are detrimental to our children rather than pedagogically valuable.
When reading this part of the book I again felt very strongly that even if you are not a co-dependent it cannot hurt you or those around you for you to become aware of the information in Pia's book. You may save a life or two!!!
Part IV is about recovery. And the key to recovery is to acknowledge the parts in ourselves that never grew up and to assume the role of a functional parent and do what our parents were unable to do: show ourselves the fallacies in our thinking/feeling and offer alternatives. We have to be our own parents.

Pia says that even after working as a therapist for as long as she has, she still isn't 100% healthy 100% of the time but she measures success by how long it takes her to recognize dysfunctional behavior/thoughts in her life and the amount of time it takes her to deal with them in a functional way. I've found this honest assessment encouraging and also discouraging at the same time. It's encouraging because it let's you easily and quickly see progress but it's also discouraging because the fantasy of every being completely free of this disease is squished. *sighs* Oh, well... I matter! I am enough! I don't have to be perfect. Not even perfectly functional. (lol)

So, who should read this book? Everybody! That's my answer to that question.

4 out of 5 stars General tips aimed at a specific problem........2007-07-15

The good thing about this book is that it identifies a problem that few popular selfhelpbooks target indepth. The only other book that comes to my mind is Robin Norwoods bestseller: "Women who love too much". It deals with a certain aspect of codependency, although Norwood doesn't use the word codependency as far as I know.
The thing I liked less is the authors personal approach. She wrote this book from her own perspective. It has fire because of that, but I feel it lacks objectivity, statistics, links to other empirical studies. What worked for her need not work for someone else.
The author's emphasis on the belief in a Higher Power as an important part of the recovery process is, to my Dutch atheistic eyes, something that makes the book very foreign.
Pia Mellody gives common sense advice on how to deal with the problem, but the advice is rather general. She often gets listy, offering rather abstract checklists.
All in all, a good book, but it wasn't the one that helped me most. I liked "an Adult Child's guide to What's Normal" slightly better.

5 out of 5 stars a great start to unravelling.......2007-06-30

this is a great book for any who, like myself, want to know not only the "how to" of fixing unhealthy repeatitive themes in our lives, but the "why" and "where" of how it all came to be in the first place. she goes over the various types of abuse that encompass far more than the obvious physical beatings and sexual molestation but emotional, intellectual and spiritual as well, and describes how people who are neglected or abused in these ways develop into adults. for those who are steadfastly seeking healing, an accompanying workbook "breaking free" offers exercises for self-exploration and growth.

5 out of 5 stars MUST READ.......2006-11-30

This is the first book on codependence that really relates to me. It's like reading my life story and it helps to understand why I am like I am. If your childhood was more about taking care of your parents than them taking care of you, this is a must read.

4 out of 5 stars codependency recovery.......2006-11-12

This book is fabulous. I am recovering from being codependent. It has been a struggle but I am very proud of the work I have done. This book has helped me understand so much about the problems of codependency. I highly recommend it.

Book Description

Courageous Souls explores the premise that we are all eternal souls who plan our lives, including our greatest challenges, prior to birth for purposes of spiritual growth. The book contains ten true stories of people who planned physical illness, having handicapped children, deafness, blindness, drug addiction, alcoholism, losing a loved one, and severe accidents. Because very different life challenges are often planned for similar reasons, readers who have not faced these specific challenges will nevertheless see themselves - and their motivations as a soul - in these stories. As readers come to realize that they themselves planned their lives, suffering that once seemed purposeless becomes imbued with deep meaning. Wisdom may be acquired in a more conscious manner; feelings of anger, guilt, blame, and victimization are replaced by acceptance, forgiveness, peace, and gratitude.

2 out of 5 stars not credible.......2007-09-30

I got to p. 300 and started reading another book. I found this book painstakingly slow to read, the information provided by the mediums: farfetched, and the conclusions drawn by the author, hard to swallow. Often, when mediums are tired, their accuracy rate diminishes. I never heard of any of the mediums used in this book. Robert Schwartz makes everything so complicated when the subject matter is really quite easy to understand. The book just doesn't flow easily and it's not a page turner in my opinion. I'm a believer, but this book really is a waste of time and money. Read Journey of the Soul by Michael Newton, PhD. Instead of using mediums, he enters the superconsciousness of his clients and elicits information from them directly about their experiences on The Other Side.

5 out of 5 stars An Empowering Way to Reframe Painful Challenges in Our Lives.......2007-09-17

It has been said that asking oneself the question, "Who was I before I was born?" can teach us the most about our true spiritual identity -- yet few of us have been so enlightened as to have heard the full reply. COURAGEOUS SOULS takes this starting point one step further by exploring just how we may have crafted our entire life around all of our life circumstances -- both the high and the low points.

What sets Robert Schwartz's book apart from other books about spirituality, reincarnation and the afterlife is his organized use of intuitive readings as companion pieces to accompany the various life stories he includes. These intuitive sessions provide a deep sense of interconnectedness and unconditional love shared in our lifetimes which we sometimes lose sight of, as well as insights into how we continue learning life lessons from one life to the next. The stories include descriptions of people who have experienced tremendous suffering who are greatly inspired and relieved to see an underlying sense of purpose and meaning to all they have gone through.

COURAGEOUS SOULS is an exceptional book for anyone interested in exploring the true nature of their spiritual identity, who is willing to keep an open mind regarding the value of some of the most painful challenges we humans face in our lives on Earth; this is highly recommended reading for anyone seeking to reframe and find deeper meaning from the painful challenges, setbacks or hardships in their lives.

5 out of 5 stars Some of life's challenges explained........2007-09-06

.
Before I even finished reading this book, I ordered more and had them sent to my friends. This book is amazing.

Told through many soul journies, Robert Schwartz brought in the talents of true mediums who were able to discover decisions that these people made before they were born - again. He did not use just one medium, but several, and they are listed in the back of the book. The individuals who shared their stories are also listed with email addresses -- and if they are able and have the time they will answer your questions.

This book came to me at a time I really needed to be reminded of my own experiences through many lives and the time between our next life. The stories are beautiful because they are able to explain why certain tragedies happen to a person.

I highly recommend this book, especially to those with open and searching minds.

5 out of 5 stars Why Human Challenges Exist!.......2007-08-28

Courageous Souls is highly recommended to anyone trying to understand the suffering, tragedy or loss that has caused them to question life, death and/or God. And who among us is not inflicted by such challenges and questions in our lifetime? In my eight years researching life after death, spirituality and life purpose, I have discovered no better explanation of why human challenges exist than what is so eloquently written in Robert Schwartz's book.

5 out of 5 stars Book Review.......2007-08-24

"Courageous Souls: Do We Plan Our Life Challenges Before Birth?" by Robert Schwartz is probably one of the most important books of our time, if not the most important. Here Robert explores the spiritual mysteries of why life paths sometimes seem difficult, challenging and perhaps even impossible. He explores and answers that deeply troubling and ever-present question of, "Why do bad things happen to good people?" Through the service of mediums, clairvoyants, trance channels, i.e., those we have come to term in general, as "psychics," who can connect with guides, angels, and the higher selves of those who have courageously stepped forward to be included in this fascinating subject matter, we discover many surprising truths. These truths can then, in turn, be applied to our own lives and experiences. This book has the potential to be life-altering for so many and comes forth at a time when everyone questions the real meaning of their existence here. The information contained in this book is beyond valuable. In addition, the author's innate compassion and his thorough approach of getting to the heart of the answers of the great mysteries of life, shines thorough like a guiding beacon for all. This is a must read for any who consider themselves on the spiritual path and also to those who are still searching for the path. - Dyan Garris - Author, Psychic, New Age Recording Artist.

4 out of 5 stars Pearson Explores Archetypes for Personal Growth.......2007-08-10

Carol Pearson, co-creator of the Pearson-Marr Archetypes Indicator, explores 12 archetypes "to help us find ourselves and transform our world." Transformation, in this case, seems to be an inner journey of revising our self-concept, deepening and enriching our ideas about others, and gaining new insights, rather than a program for material engagement with outer circumstances.

Purchaser can take the Heroic Myth Index (HMI; I am not sure how this differs from the PMAI, a proprietary instrument) to find out what archetypes are strongest in you. It is an interesting activity. The description of each archetypes tells about its spiritual journey. Self-growth exercises are proposed at the end of the chapter. As well, Pearson includes useful background information about achieving inner balance. The writing is sometimes a bit stodgy, and I prefer more examples. This is outweighed by Pearson's credentials as a professional whose research has contributed to our understanding and use of archetypes as tools for personal understanding and growth.

5 out of 5 stars Bringing understanding and intention to relationships.......2007-01-29

It's easy to forget the good things and focus on the problems. This is a delightful book that reminds us to seek the best in each other and to live with the intention to create a great relationship.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent (and enjoyable) guide to understanding and developing the archetypal energies in your life.......2007-01-19

This book is based on Carol Pearson's extensive study and experience of the archetypes (i.e. magician, lover, caregiver, warrior, fool, destroyer etc.) a little Jungian psychology and her personal and consulting experience. The reader can do a survey in the back to see which archetypes are most active in their life (I found the survey in the back to be fairly accurate) and then read about those archetypes, how they express and there's some guidance for the development of each archetype at the end of each chapter in the form of practical exercises. There's extensive examples and discussion of each archetype drawing from a number of perspectives and sources including popular culture, movies, other author's work and a discussion of the different levels of development of each archetype including the shadow side, addictions and compulsions of each.... some of which you may be (intimately) familiar with!

This book begins with some general discussion and background information, an outline of the Soul and the Self and how growing through the archetypes can be related to the hero's journey, which is then followed by an in depth discussion of each archetype. If you're interested in self development, you may try looking at doing some of the exercises around the archetypes you don't have much awareness or development in. Many people would find this quite challenging, for instance, for the person who takes themselves too seriously (I'm talking from experience here!) could spend a week taking nothing seriously and exploring the archetype of the fool, and how the expression and experience of that archetype can enhance one's life.

If you've read and enjoyed Pearson's other books or have an interest in archetypal energies, or just an interest in exploring your own character, then this is a great and easy place to start. This book also includes notes in the back with references for further study.

Pearson has made work with and the study of the archetypes her life work and you will learn much from a study of this and her other works.

5 out of 5 stars An easy-to-read yet rigorous entry point into self analysis.......2000-01-23

As a software developer and mathematician presently in my early 60's, ever since I can remember I have always been long on technology and short on "people" knowledge Yet from my early adolescence I remember my dad telling me how important it is to know oneself. While I always agreed with this good advice, whenever I explored my soul, I seemed to fail to come up with meaningful, non-judgemental answers - possibly because my questions themselves were not thought provoking.

Enter Ms Peason and her "Heros Within" book. Her brilliant, accessible review of the 12 archetypes that define our personalities suddenly provided me with a new handle - a key to a better understanding of myself and others. What I particularly appreciated in her book was its combination of a rigurous, scientific treatment of the subject, couched in a language both accessible and devoid of academic circumlucutions. I would reccomend her book to anyone who wants to understand himself/herself better and/or redefine his/her professional and personal life.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Tool for Self-Definition.......1998-11-30

I'm a Creator and a Magician!--who wouldn't be happy to have learned that? I'm also a gardener, a teacher, an artist, an adopted grandmother, a community worker, and I have a lot of other roles in life. Because I read this book, I recognize my strengths and my inclinations better, and I know what to emphasize in my work and in my relationships. I'm glad I read this, and I'm giving copies to others who are unsure about their strengths and how to apply them. Thanks!
