A "Must Have" book.......2007-01-03
The "Art of Portrait Drawing", a hard cover beautifully printed book, is a fine addition to any beginning or intermediate artists library. Joy Thomas is a highly skilled artist and the book is filled with "hands on" demonstrations and practical tips on approaching this subject. Personally
I find portrait drawing/painting to be an extremely challenging and intimidating task. Indeed there are many "celebrity" artists in the top galleries who couldn't paint a good portrait if their life depended on it.
While this book may not be the definative work on Portrait Drawing, it is very well done and well worth the investment.
Sound Advise for the Intermediate.......2006-09-20
The author works from life and covers most the kinds of things you'd want to know about successful portraiture. The step-by-step was most interesting to read as she takes you through a process and how to resolve some issues you may run into. It doesn't offer a lot to beginners because she assumes you know how to see and do basic drawing and toning. I'd say this is a book for the intermediate artist who needs to reenforce existing knowledge with some very useful tips you probably never thought of, particularly for drawing from life.
I only have a few small critical things to say here. Although she reviews some basics on composition such as the golden ratio, she doesn't actually seem to practice them much in her examples. For example, she shows you how to "center" the head and says the "full face" portrait is the most common. Well I've heard alot of arguments against centering and full face views so it seems a contradiction to talk composition then not practice it in reality. I believe the 3 quarter view is most common, and you do not want to center the head for reasons I can't give here because it is too detailed. But perhaps she didn't want to overload the reader with composition theory since that's a much more complex issue.
But this is very worthwhile to read and she seems to have done a great job with the structure and language of the book.
Thomas' Portrait Drawiang.......2006-06-29
I just watched the video that comes with this book. I would higly recommended both. As a beginner it was inspiring to watch an artist actually doing the technique described in the book. I can only imagine that if someone has more experience, it would be very usefull to see someone highly skilled perform their technique. I have read many books on this subject and find this to be the best.

Even if you never picked up a brush. Or didn't know how to read. Anyone could get an idea from this book. Maybe it's boring to others. Maybe because he does everthing step by step. So that you can make your own creations. I have never used oils in my life. But I wanted to learn. My Grandmother was a great artist. But when she could teach me, I was to young. When I was old enough, she passed away. I hope she can look down and see. I really did enjoy what she made. Now, I can make something beautiful too. I bought this and the red cover book. Super
An Abundance Of "Happy Old Trees".......2006-08-01
Good old Bob Ross! I used to watch his series in high school and his shows were great. This book conveys their tone and has the added bonus of giving us his finished landscapes to look at as long as we want. I got this book so I could see the paintings, but under his step by step instruction I've also tried my hand at creating my own---and making art this nice isn't as easy as Bob makes it look! Whether you want to use this as a how-to guide for your own time in front of a canvas, or you simply like Bob Ross' artwork, this is a friendly visit with everyone's favorite PBS guru of oil painting.

I found this book full of ideas and gives the brain the chance to see Beauty in this sometimes sad world.I have found that each book I have bought, including this one, gives the artist a sure fire way of producing something...even though I now tend to use imagination .Simply illustrated and easy to follow,you will be happy to follow Bob in his Wonderful Lessons.Excellent and instructive for the beginner and the established painter.
Did Van Gogh have a 'fro?.......2002-05-30
It is ironic that the best recommendation for this book comes from someone who gave it one star! Study this book and you will be able to do what Bob does... Serious growing dynamic artists will surely look beyond this book but maybe they should at least take a peek. If Van Gogh had been as loved and/or recognizable in his time as Bob Ross was, he probably wouldn't have cut his own ear off. As a nearly elderly weekend painter I heartily recommend this book. I think my only visual handicap so far is that it's time for new bifocals though the visually verbose would certainly disagree.

I checked out this book from the library because, as an adult, I felt I didn't know enough about paintings to appreciate them fully when I visited an art gallery. This book briefly covers a large number of aspects of art including color, perspective, portraits, and landscape. The paintings used as examples are many and varied and they are beautifully reproduced. I learned many things but as I read, I came up with many more questions the book did not answer. However, I am a 36-year-old college graduate. I believe that the book is quite informative for its recommended age group: 9-12. I am getting a copy for my artistic nephew's tenth birthday.

Good Book for Any Acrylic Painter's Bookshelf.......2001-12-05
If you've never done acrylic painting but would like to try pick up this book. The author does a good job of pointing out some advantages of acrylic over oil while making the important point that neither should be seen as superior to the other. Oil has certain advantages for certain techniques and acrylic has others. They should be treated as two separate mediums, not one as superior or inferior to the other.
Once she finishes showing some of the properties of acrylics there are discussions of preparing various surfaces and laying out a palette for the demonstrations that follow. Unlike most books this one doesn't provide a chapter covering color mixing, composition, values, etc. These things are discussed within the flow of the step-by-step demonstrations. The subject matter for each of the paintings range from still lifes to landscapes to seascapes to florals. You get lessons in painting moonlit skies, sand, pebbles and debris on beaches, oceans, waves, shadows, reflected light, trees, ferns, wildflowers, etc. It is interesting to see the variety of surfaces used for these demonstrations. Everything from canvas to hardboard to rice paper is used. Several chapters detail some beautiful textural techniques that add variety and interest to the background of the subjects.
If you are just beginning to learn how to paint I would recommend one of the Jerry Yarnell books first. Then, once you're comfortable with acrylics get this book (and other acrylic books) to see the wide variety of ways this unique paint can be used.
JUST ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL.......2001-12-03
I own approximately 40 painting books, and I'll have to say this is one of the best. The illustrated paintings are just beautiful. Penney seems to emphasize beach scenes, gardens, and flowers. There are demonstrations that actually give you the exact steps and process. With her "Still, Reflective Water" beach scene there are 13 illustratons, as she progresses to the finished painting. I paid full price through North Light, and I am very pleased with this book.

As I have said before with Bob's white cover book. Bob has a step by step approach. His books are wonderful. If you have never picked up a brush or know how to read. You can follow his book. The book gives you that little push to design & make your own master pieces. He was a great great guy.

Bob Ross' wet on wet technique is perhaps the easiest method of landscape painting commercially available today. This book is a step by step (albeit black and white steps) instructional guide to painting 60 different paintings in the Bob Ross style.
Anette Kowalski has been on Bob Ross' Joy of Painting at least once to paint flowers. She has regularly contributed to the other twenty or so books Bob Ross has written. This is primarily an instructional guide using photographs. However, there is an insufficient amount of time spent on technique. That said, this book is excellent for viewers who have seen Ross' show or have painted at least a few paintings to understand the basics of painting as Ross does.

I found this book a little bland compared to the other ones...some of the work was lacking details or seemed flat in comparison,but I think they all have the basic details to help anyone on the way to produce a little gem.Simple and yet the end results can be worked toyour satisfaction.
The best teacher I ever had........2002-01-22
I just wanted to say that I started watching Bob Ross on tv and got interested in the wet-on-wet technique around 1990 or 91. I sent for paints and some of his books. How anyone can ever say anything against this man , is beyond me. I even miss his little squirrel! I haven't painted for about seven years now. I'am retired and have the time now. I live in West Virginia, moved from Ohio. This is beautiful country here. I'am sure getting the urge to start back in painting. I need to get new supplies. Please send me a catalog.
