Stop the Anger Now.......2005-09-15
I have used Stop the Anger Now, by Potter-Efron, in a private mental health setting for over a year now. Potter-Efron is the cornerstone of my treatment program for anger management along with supplementations from The Anger Control Workbook, by McKay.
One thing I appreciate about Stop the Anger Now is that it is easy to implement along with pre-testing/post-testing from the Aggression Questionnaire (AQ). (The AQ is "Designed to aid in evaluating an individual's aggressive responses and ability to channel those responses in a safe and constructive manner" (Buros Institute, 2000). This is a test (Buss & Durkee, 1957) that has been revised and used for almost 50 years to assess anger.)
I have been impressed with my clients' ability to implement the concepts in Potter-Efron without too much struggle in theory. I have seen measurable successes from using this book (including individual therapy, of course). I highly recommend it as a companion guide to any professional Anger Management program, as well as, self-help in trying to manage anger.

In A Potter's Workbook, renowned studio potter and teacher Clary Illian presents a textbook for the hand and the mind. ok, but quite limited........2006-07-17
Clary Illian presents a decent book dealing with the conception of form in pottery. She details aspects of functional pottery such as volume in relation to function, and little details like rims and bases, handles and spouts.
Overall I think her approach is extremely limited. she mentions only briefly in the beginning chapter that she will be presenting only a functional approach. But even within that approach I feel she takes a very narrow stance.
This book is OK if you want to study how to become a potter who makes functional pots (but not if you want to actually glaze those pots). It will not help you contextualize the role of hand-made ceramics in postmodern america, which is something that I think all ceramists need to think about.
Pros: not just a schematic approach, but a workbook of ideas and concepts, as they relate to functional pottery. Ms. Illian clearly has a deep appreciation of the material as well as a great deal of experience (she worked for bernard leach!).
Cons: reads like journal scribblings. often more white space than words or pictures on the page. very limited vocabulary and conception of clay. many of the sketches and greenware examples (they're all greenware) feel like complete throw-aways.
Best Book for the 2nd Leg of Your Pottery Journey.......2005-09-13
Once you have some skill at basic throwing, this is the book you need! Clary examines aesthetic principles of pottery. If you have wondered aloud just what has happened to your pot as it emerges on the wheel, you can get your answer here. Why does your pot look cumbersome while the person next to you has double the clay and yet their creation is light and airy? If you have pondered the question, you need a course in the matter. There are no colored pictures because the book is about form and not about glazes or other embellishment. No more bowlng pin vases for me. I am on to lovlier pots!
Not what I was looking for..........2005-05-22
If you're looking for a book on technique, which I was, RUN AWAY! This book is about the philosophy of making pots. I found the title misleading; I expected something more concrete (no pun intented). This is a cerebral book; it has its place, and I may learn to love it, but not today. Today I'm just disappointed.
A Must-Read for Potters.......2000-02-10
Clary Illian has given the ceramics community an amazing gift by writing this book. Not only is she thoughtful and clear, she inspires potters (whether beginners or professionals) to make better, more personal pots. Filled with examples -- beautifully photographed by Charles Metzger -- which add flesh to her supurb text. Every potter should consider this must-reading.
A Potter's Workbook.......1999-12-01
I have been teaching ceramics for over 20 years and have been looking for a book like this one to share with my students. I am also a studio artist and have and will find it an invaluable tool when considering the importance of form while I work. Clary Illian is a fabulous potter. She has a great love of the material and her instincts and knowledge about beauty in functionality in pottery is clear and lovely.

Therapist-for 20 years.......2007-07-06
I have used this book in group therapy and the kids love to role play with it. Also, in individual therapy the child usually wants to do more than one chapter (so, I must admit sometimes I cheat and do two!) I hope more of these workbooks are to come!

My answer to prayer about pottery !.......2004-03-13
This book is what I have been looking for for years !
I have taken 6 pottery classes over the last 10 years and I finally got my own wheel and kiln. Now what ? None of the classes taught me how to fire my work (they had me leave it on the firing shelf and when I came back next week, it was done).
This book gives me loads of confidence to start practicing on my own.
Practice is what makes you good at pottery and Practical Solutions for Potters makes it possible for me to dive in with both hands and do my thing. I did fine in the classes because when I ran into a problem (sagging walls for example) the teacher would come along and help me fix it. But as I began throwing pots all by my lonesome, I kept wishing I had an experienced potter to run to when I had problems. This book is the next best thing. In fact, probably better !
I'm a hands-on learner and the plethera of illustrations in this book make it so easy to find answers quickly AND to understand the instructions. It has answers for hand-built, for wedging and centering the clay, for throwing the pieces, for glazing and different techniques, and for firing.
Why did it take so long for someone to come up with a good guide for potters? I don't know. I've probably bought 5 or 6 books before this one and all of them were a waste of money.

I recommend this book for advanced as well as beginner potters.
This book is crammed with useful techniques as well as good,
illustrative photos.
The solutions cover a good spread of problems - but do not cover the basics. I still recommend it as a supplement for beginner potters, as a lot of common problems are explained well here.
For advanced potters, some techniques in this book may be redundant, but there are a lot that should provide some new directions. For example, covered in this book is how to make a good teapot that can pour well - always a good topic to review;
However topics such as: How can i Make More dynammic work - offers some new directions. Or, How can i translate my drawn designs into clay?
The largest sections are handbuilding and throwing, but there are some good sections on decorating. The kiln and firing section was a bit weak - as this is a complicated topic.
I have many pottery books, but find this refreshingly well done.
I do not have to comprise on good subject matter vs good photographs. It's a great book....
Every Potters Book.......2000-07-26
I recomend this book to anyone who does or is interested in pottery. This book has every question to do with pottery and their solution. Every page is filled with color photos and great ideas. I have learned so many things from this book and yet every time I open it I learn something new and useful. It shows how to glaze and decorate your peices in so many different techniques and ways. This book is a great gift for any potter, and a book you are sure to use a life time.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is book #4 in a series of seven. Just like the first three this book is filled with excitement all of its own. It still carries on the plot of Harry's adventures throughout his school year like the other books, but at the same time it has its own original theme. J.K. Rowling's style is full of imagery, which lets you think of the book as a movie. You are not just `reading' the book, you are `seeing' it too. I definitely would recommend this book to anyone who has read the first three. I would also recommend to anyone who hasn't read any of the series to give it a chance. I'll admit I'm not a huge fan of reading, but I could not put this book (or the other three) down.

Goblet of Fire.......2001-07-09
I'm a Polish high school student. My English isn't satisfactory, for me , though my friend don't think so. They were surprised that I'm "losing" my time reading so "capacitive" book. But they haven't even read first three part of HP serie, which could be bought published in Polish language. I've read the first two parts of HP advenures in Polish then I've got the last two from my mom, when I was lying in my bed ill for a week. I was fastinatied with that two books, escpecially with Goblet of Fire. I've not understood everything. The Polish edicion of HP and Goblet of fire is coming on 30 th September out, so I though that after 6 months learning english at school I could understand everything. It was good idea, 'cause now at holidays I don't have to worry about not having time, so I spend last two days reading the forth book again. I think it is the best part of all J.K. Rowlings books and I cannot wait untill 2002 when the 5th part is going to be pusblished. I'll also read it first in English, cause translating it will last for about 1,5 year. Mayby when I'll be studying I can read it in my native language. I think till summer 2002 my English will be so good as I want it to be and i'll understand it for a first time. So, I have one request to Mrs. Rowling and the Bloomsbury Publishing " PLEASE PUBLISH ' HP and the order of Phoenix' AS FAST AS POSSIBLE" Not only people from UK&US are waiting for it.

Learning from Harry Potter.......2001-03-22
I actually know of a class teaching Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in college. Does that make Potter books literature? I can't rightly say, but I will say that the Harry Potter books have dramatically re-introduced literacy into the lives of children AND adults. Furthermore, the series surreptitiously pushes the boundaries of what Americans have considered a long time as being "children's literature." Rowling, not constrained by the coddling nature of our own country's hypocritical and overprotective stance towards children, creates a rich world of evolving characters with deep emotions and clever bits of humor. If Rowling's books can get children, en masse, to read and read well, I say her books practically deserve their own branch of study. How many things have caught the interests of children in recent years without stooping to vapid juvenilia? Our children can handle Harry Potter. We just have to show them.
