Customer Reviews:
A MUST have for any art fan.......2005-01-31
I recently purchased Spectrum 9, 10, and 11. These books are absolutely wonderful, and I would recommend them to any artist or fan of fantasy/sci fi art. They are extremely well put together, of high quality (reproduction wise), have a large number and variety of artists, and contain some of the most beautiful works of art I have seen. Some of the subject matter can be disturbing or somewhat sexual in nature (certainly nothing explicit, but not exactly innocent either), so I wouldn't recomend them for the very young (12 or under?) if you are a parent. These books are worth every penny and highly recommended.
Sweet dude.......2004-07-04
This is a wonderful book and I would recommend this to anyone interested in sci-fi/fantasy art. This book is even better than it's predessesors also. I think anyone who enjoyed the other spectrum books will enjoy this.
Drop Dead Gorgeous!.......2004-04-16
Sci-Fi and Fantasy artists have always seemed like illustration's poor step-children, often ignored (and sometimes sneered at) while the historical and Western painters wore the mantel of respectability. Thank goodness Spectrum came along to point out to the naysayers that Art is Art and that the practitioners of "fantastic" art are as gifted as anyone working today (if not better).
Spectrum 10 is chocked-full of beautiful and imaginative work by veterans and fresh faces alike. Personal favorites include the previously unpublished gallery paintings by jillion-times-Hugo-winner Michael Whelan, the Expressionist-flavored space ships by John Berkey, the monsterously proportioned toy robots by Eric Joyner, and the fantasy scenarios of Paul Bonner. There's art for films, paintings for books, sculptures (which I personally enjoy seeing), and work from comics; serious, mature pieces followed by wonderfully whacky and whimisical images. There's really something for everyone. It's fun to go through the book and compare the judges' selection of award-winners in each category with what *I* think should have won.
And thank goodness someone has finally acknowledged Michael Kaluta (#10's Grand Master Award recipient) as one of the most worthwhile illustrators working today. Kudos to the Spectrum Board!
About the only downsides are the occasional typos and several pages with cramped lay-outs, but all-in-all a must-have book for anyone with an imagination--and at a bargain price at that!
AN EMBARRASSMENT OF RICHES (That's a GOOD thing!)........2003-10-30
I've been picking up the Spectrum collections since # 7 and I've notice an improvement both in quality and variety in the artwork presented.Within its 176 pages you'll find 300 plus reproductions. The book is divided into seven sections displaying work from advertising, book, comics, dimensional, editorial, institutional and unpublished sources.A cornucopia of styles and approaches grace SPECTRUM 10's pages. From the photo(sur)realism of Paul Bonner's watercolors portraying Orks and Minotaur to Kinuko Y. Craft's Pre-Raphaelite inspired BEAUTY AND THE BEAST to Brom's patented creepy/sexy gothic leather bound babes to Peter d Seve's delightful character studies in pencil for Disney Studios' Treasure Planet you'll find an eclectic cross section of SF/fantasy/horror illustrators working today. Jon joster (winner of the Gold Award in the comics' category) is my favorite here with his retro robots and expressive compositions.Only one thing irritates me in this book, and the only reason I gave 4 stars out of 5: these are the resin statuettes of comic book characters found in the "dimensional" section. These kitsch saturated figurines have no other purpose than to serve as "must haves" for pathological collectoholics and slightly mar this book for me. (Sorry about the soapbox spiel-guess I'm now assured of getting a good number of "I did not find this review helpful" votes.)Dispite this one caveat I highly recommend this beautiful book to anyone who appreciates fine illustration.

This book is going to make Frank Frazetta fans very, very happy. Icon: A Retrospective by the Grand Master of Fantastic Art Frank Frazetta is a comprehensive look at the work of one of the world's most influential fantasy artists. Frazetta's entire career is covered, from his earliest work on L'il Abner to his unused poster art for Quentin Tarantino's From Dusk Till Dawn; from his powerful interpretations of Robert E. Howard's Conan character to his whimsical Hollywood parodies. More than a hundred full color prints of Frazetta's most representative work are collected here in a single handsome edition, along with photographs of the artist and his studio, quotes, and testimonial biography.
The subject matter of Frazetta's work is familiar--brawny warriors, buxom enchantresses, and terrifying monsters--but he manages to infuse them with a rare charisma. His figures are sublime, at once naturalistic and hyper-real, and his vivid use of colors startles the eye again and again. Incredibly, this collection manages to do justice to his decades of award-winning work. Icon is a must for the serious Frazetta enthusiast. --Brendan J. LaSalle
Book Description
The incredible paintings of Frank Frazetta have brought him worldwide fame, legions of loyal fans, and scores of imitators. His darkly dramatic Conan the Barbarian oils and the equally powerful and erotic compositions for the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs have become the ultimate standards of excellence in the fantasy and adventure field. Icon was Franzetta’s first major retrospective in his 55-year career. Lavish full-color reproduction on deluxe art paper showcases over 65 major finished oil paintings, 25 drawings, and other pieces. This new softcover edition contains 32 new pages of additional, never-before-published art and photos. New material includes paintings of Woody Allen and Peter Sellers; concepts of Clint Eastwood for the movie poster to The Gauntlet; original concepts for the Conan book cover paintings; and character drawings for the Broadway production of Li'l Abner.
Customer Reviews:
Frazetta was the best.......2007-07-15
I read Edgar Rice Burroughs novels as a teen and will never forget the impact of the Frazetta covers. His heros, the settings and the creatures were so wild and vivid; plus I think he definitely set my ideals of feminine beauty for life. This collection is a must for anyone who wants a good biography of F.F. along with some great reproductions of his best work.
The cover came off! .......2007-06-26
Frazetta is great and this book is swell... however (as one other reviewer also experienced) the cover came off my book after I had it for only one week! I couldn't believe it! To credit of the publisher they did send me a replacement. I think I will buy the sequel now. Too bad it's only available in hardcover, but at least that way the cover is much less likely to fall off. As for the third book, it seems to be completely unavailable except to those who are willing to pay over a hundred dollars for it!
See For Yourself.......2007-05-16
Words cannot describe the beauty and passion in Frazetta's work; This book is filled with amazing art, from the original sketches to the final product; Lots of personal photographs and insightful narratives help to make this a satisfying package, but the artwork alone makes this book a must have. From his early career doing comic books and movie posters, to the grand scale of his fantasy art, this is a book that is sure to excite any and all who have a shred of creativity within them. Totally inspiring book!!!
Icon: A retrospective by the Grand Master of the Fantastic Art.......2007-02-08
Quite a volume if you a Frank Frazetta fan. You might even discover some hidden facts about Frank or artwork that you hadn't seen before. It is very complete.
Fantastic!.......2007-01-10
If you like adventure you will love this book. It brings out the kid in you through the warrior and fine art. The illustrations are great to sit down with and not only look at but to get the pencil and paper out and try to imitate. Wonderful!
Book Description
Carlos Huante was born in East L.A. in 1965. Besides chilaquiles and Yerba Buena (mint tea), Carlos grew up on stop-motion monster movies. Since that time he has pursued his passion for the arts by creating some of the most
original monsters and characters, for both film and animation, ever seen.
Monstruo is a collection of Huante's personal, original work featuring a wide range of monster and character designs, from simple pencil sketches that magically capture the gesture of his subject, to full-color digital and traditional media paintings.
Customer Reviews:
highly recommended.......2007-05-30
Even if your not into sci-fi this book will impress. It is a mix of hand made and computer rendered illustrations that are top notch. The hand drawn images are wonderfully revealing. Would make a great technique scource book for any artist.
Amazing...........2005-11-12
This is a book of the most amazing, top-quality illustrations of monsters and heros. Every time I page through it, my hear skips a beat out of excitement. If you love graphic novels or illustration, you MUST see this book!
Book Description
This lavishly illustrated book features the work of today's best-selling creators of fantasy and science fiction art. From the popular and well-regarded Spectrum annuals, over 100 artists are represented, chosen from a jury of award-winning professionals. The introduction is written by Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Lee Stuart, and some of the artists included are Michael Whelan, James Gurney, Don Maitz, Thomas Blackshear, and Frank Miller.
Customer Reviews:
Great book, a little hard to read.......2006-02-25
This book and the work is great, but the type is a little difficult. It's the only reason I'm rating it a 4. I love this annual.
Spectrum Series.......2005-09-12
Anybody who is interested in Sci-Fi or Fantasy artwork should be a big fan of this series. Spectrum 1 is actually a reprint of the original. The reason that I won't give it 5 stars is that since this was the first, it's format is that of a directory of illustrators. For an even better experience, pick up books 9-11, they're worth the cost.

what is this thing?.......2005-07-11
This book is totally weird. The pictures have nothing to do with
anything. I was not inspired, my mother in law, an accomplished
painter, saw nothing of interest. Check this book out carefully before
you buy it, because it may not be what your looking for
My favorite of a fabulous series.......2005-03-06
These are truly spectacular collections: I have most of them and this is my favorite. Always count on finding many works that are stunning, breathtaking and thought-provoking. Potential buyers should be aware that there is usually some nudity and sexuality, and a few of the pictures in any collection will horrific or even grotesque. It is hard to imagine a better buy in representational art for an extremely varied collection of gorgeous, powerful, witty and clever works.
Fantasy............2003-11-28
This is a great book and so are the other 9 in this series. I have them all and I haven't been disappointed with any of them. The book contains artwork that can be seen on book covers, magazine covers, CD's, Video Game Packaging and Comic Books to name just some of the ways this artwork is shown. I recommend this to anyone who is a fan of Fantasy, Roll Play and other venues of the imagination. This book will be one you won't get tired of looking at year after year.

Customer Reviews:
Overall decent cover art.......2007-08-17
There are a lot of good covers here but overall I am not that impressed. It seems like the author included a lot of covers that I would consider, just very different and excluded a lot of classics. Odd.

Book Description
Letters have a mysterious and cabalistic quality that has inspired artists through the ages. Calligraphers, painters, and engravers have never ceased to shape and decorate them, using them as a starting point for limitless dreams and fantasies. The illuminated initials of medieval manuscripts, ranging from Romanesque exuberance to Gothic excess, paved the way. Here were not only Biblical scenes but also mythical beasts and human figures that were direct precursors of the zoomorphic and anthropomorphic alphabets of the Renaissance and later. With the invention of printing, the inventiveness of artists knew no bounds. Ornamented letters presented historical and mythical events, romantic landscapes, trees, flowers, buildings, clowns, devils, children, and every kind of animal. There was, indeed, no subject that could not be put to the service of the animated alphabet. Hugues Demeude shares his passion for the decorated letter in a succinct historical text and a vast range of beautifully reproduced examples from the eighth to the twentieth century, from sacred illuminated manuscripts to mass-produced postcards. Lovers of art and design will relish the decorative profusion, which includes examples from the Corbie Psalter and Les Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, and the work of artists such as Albrecht Drer, Hans Holbein, Lucas Cranach, Honor Daumier, and Kate Greenaway.

Book Description
Pomp and circumstance, epic fantasy, travel, romance, meditation, history, satire, erotic intrigue: books throughout history, from papyrus to paperback, have used images to reinforce words. Manuscripts and printed books have been illustrated in every Western artistic style, and the artists represented in this classic survey range from ancient Egypt to modern Manhattan, from the Master of the Leaping Figures to Henri Matisse. Among the byways of this vast artistic field are the fiery manuscript Apocalypses of the early Middle Ages, fable books and songbooks, and the ornate records of baroque court life. Perhaps the artistic peak of printed book illustration was reached with the delicate engraving technique used in the eighteenth century. After 1800, as book production became more industrialized, many illustrators continued to produce superb work for a wide readership, but others turned back to craft processes to recreate the medieval tradition of the book as a precious object. Both the mass market and the minority of bibliophiles have survived into the twentieth century; and on many fronts, from botany to fiction, from poems to physiology, illustration is still a vital and developing art.

Urgência do material.......2007-01-09
Good day! Necessary of this material with urgency, and already I am counting as certain the presence of it for the beginning of the lessons. Therefore soon I will have to make another bibliography purchase new.
Book Description
These are collections of artwork by a new generation of manga artists appearing on the manga scene after Graphic-sha began publication of its "How To Draw Manga" series. Within each volume is featured especially created artwork by carefully selected leading young artists currently active in the Japanese manga and anime art scene. Also included are designs selected from amongst published works of the artists. In the second half of each guide, the artists offer tips on creating artwork. These black and white pages present not only the completed designs, but also rough sketches, thoughts at the creation stage, and comments by the artist. With a collection of illustrations, comments by each artist on each piece, as well as the artist's sources of inspiration, each of these volumes is a must have for manga fans.
Customer Reviews:
I wish I could rate this higher........2005-11-06
The artist, Koh Kawarajima and his crew are very talented and are remarkable at what they do. The art in this book is very well done with innovative designs, vibrant colors, and astonishing backgrounds. The style of the manga in this book is my favorite, big eyes, long hair and cute faces. There is about 64 pictures not including the pencil drawing rough drafts in the back. I wish this is all I could say about the book, but it isn't.
The reason I can not recommend this book is this; girls that show too much. Most pictures are rather modest, but some go too far. A few pictures have girls that are barley clothed and some that aren't clothed at all. Some are intentionally sticking their butt and some are about to "fall out" of what they are wearing. Some are in bathing suits and some are in their underwear. This is typical for manga I'm sorry to say, and I can not advocate this for anyone.
