Customer Reviews:
Very Poorly Written.......2006-08-22
This book is very poorly written. It also does not adequately discuss estimating materials.
Broad Outlook on Interior Products.......2000-06-21
This book is a good reference for anyone who is currently designing or building a luxury home, but for a general education on construction interiors, this is not the book. There are many references to the latest products, which include both color and feature description that will be quickly outdated. Most of the discussion centers around materials that would be used in an affluent home rather than your typical family residence, and product descriptions focus on the unique product, not the typical. Dimensions for comfortable clearance and layout hints are useful for residential layout, but the commercial references are very limited.

Customer Reviews:
This is a great resource book.......2007-09-28
I bought "Haley's Hints" after seeing it highlighted on one of the fundraising shows on PBS. We're already using lots of the tips in the book, and loving them. The only problem we encountered was actually finding the water softener (or washing soda). It does not mention any brand names, and most stores I checked didn't know what I was referring to. One other note of interest that I've discovered through trial and error...when it says use salt, use iodized salt...NOT sea salt. Apparently the iodized version has a critical component missing in natural salt.
Great Buy!.......2007-09-16
I purchased this book after seeing a segment on PBS. This book is filled with simple tips on how to organize your home. Several tips have become quick favorites. This book led me to purchase Haley's Cleaning Tips which have really been useful. I even purchased a copy for my mother who has enjoyed learning new tips.
Haleys Hints?.......2007-09-14
I was looking forward to getting this book especially after watching the PBS special, but I was so disappointed. I was really looking for good products for cleaning products(which I haven't found yet). I think that if he transcribed the show that he does for PBS and sells that he will have a much better book. I would only recommend this book if you already have some good home care books in your collection. This is not a particularly good choice for the modern family.
WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS.......2007-09-06
Great book for practical, efficient hints of all types. Lots of short cuts too. We all can use Haley's Hints in our busy daily lives.
Disappointed in Takoma Park.......2007-08-19
I was hoping for helpful housecleaning tips, as both my husband and I work, and we could use some help. I think the editor and publisher should be embarrassed by this book. I am currently on page 344, the last possibly useful hint was on page 286 (save orange peels and use them for kindling - worth a try?)
Hundreds of the tips are badly out dated. When was the last year that the U.S. Postal Service allowed string on packages? Or how about this travel tip - wear lace up shoes to the airport (page 349).
Another good airplane travel tip from page 349, "Drink a glass of water every hour for dehydration". Is the editor paying any attention?
One or two percent of the tips in this book pertain to pantyhose. If you don't have lots of old pantyhose lying around (enough to hook your own rugs out of, for example), this is not the book for you.
Many of the tips are so bad that it's hard to know what to think. How about this, from page 307 "Take an old toothbrush and remove the bristles. File the other end to a point and you'll have an economical letter opener!" How long would that take? Has anyone in the entire history of the Earth actually used this tip?
I wouldn't have taken time to write a bad review, except that there many tips that start with "They say that...". I don't care what people say, I paid for tips that are worth my time to read and to try out! For example, on page 275, "They say that tulips last longer if you put a few pennies in the bottom of the vase". I think it's very poor workmanship that the book contains so many ideas that author has not bothered to test.
It's a shame because there are a few good tips buried in these pages, and with better editing the book could be worth while.

Another Gurstelle Great!.......2007-04-24
I just received this book in the mail and was so excited that I did a quick scan to see what I could "put together" NOW! There were so many fun things to do in this book. Very inventive. I love the way Gurstelle gives praise to the past by creating a steam cannon designed by DaVinci (which was inspired by Archimedes). I can't wait to build even more!

Excellent Reference.......2007-03-29
This book was to replace my old book that had been borowed and not returned. This book is a "must have" for anyone actively involved in the pipelining industry. While some of the homemade fittings cannot be used in code piping it can and has solved many problems during my 30+years of cross-country pipline cnstruction.

Book Description
Full of rare photos of Yamaguchi himself doing katas as well as showing exercises, postures and throws. Hundreds of fine detail line drawings depicting the katas as well as complete analysis of each kata by the founder make this an invaluable asset in the learning of this style.
Customer Reviews:
GojuRyu Karate Do Kyohan - You need your reading glasses for this one!.......2007-07-15
This text is full of information. It relies heavily on graphics to convey the various movements that form the essential Kata and fighting application of the Goju Ryu style.
This is a work that will benefit those of you who have been training for a few years as it requires a knowledge of several higher Kata and a more than basic understanding of goju ryu techniques. It is always good to read the wisdom of a master of our style and Yamaguchi does have some important messages for the thoughtful student of Karate. However, you will have to work your way through short paragraph after paragraph of ideas to find a thought that will grab your attention!
Unfortuneately the print and graphic images in this edition are too small for old eyes and if you are over 50 you really need some magnification to be able to read the text and interpret the graphics.
great book!.......2006-09-19
This book in wonderful, from the box, the glossy cover, high-quality papers, and most importantly, its content. It has many very beautiful and very clear drawings (I didn't count but I would guess that they are 1,000 or so) and some wonderful historical photo of Gogen Yamaguchi performing Kata.
This book covers history, basic, exercise, and kata of gojuryu karatedo as taught by Yamaguchi sensei. If you are practicing goju ryu karatedo, this is a wonderful reference, and I believe that anyone who is practicing karate of any style or just general martial arts enthusiasts will treasure this book. It's also cheaper to get it here from Amazon.
Beautiful.......2006-02-23
The hardcover book is in superb condition, including a hard case book box, a certificate with the print number of the book and gold-leaf edged pages. Content wise it is certainly a must-have for a GoJu Ryu student, or even any martial artist for that matter! I can't wait to begin my reading! :D
Could only run second to a book by Miyagi himself!.......2003-06-06
This book could only run a second to a book by Miyagi himself! Yamaguchi Gogen Sensei gives us the absolute guide on the karate system founded by Chojun Miyagi. Even the class structure is there. From Junbi Undo (preparatory exercises) to basics, kata, kumite, Hojo Undo (supplementary exercises)this book is traditional Goju Ryu Karate all the way.
Put together in a very logical step by step way many of today's martial arts writers should take from Yamaguchi on how to write a karate instruction manual.
As is always the case, no matter how well the words describe the techniques or how well the pictures show them, there is no substitute for an actual teacher. Why? Because you cannot explain proper breathing, timing, tempo, focus, weight distribution, balance, and the many other aspects of techniques and kata without actually seeing them and doing them in person. A qualified karate instructor is always needed. This book is great for any one beginning their journey in Goju Ryu karate. It is perfect for the seasoned practitioner also. It is packaged perfect for the collector item that it is. I always use it for reference and have this deep respect for the writer for he is one of the original masters of Goju Ryu Karate and the founder of Goju Kai (Japanese Goju).
I highly recommend this book and anything that you can get your hands on by Morio Higaonna. A word to the wise. The paperback edition listed for this book refers to the title To Te Jutsu. Be careful. It is not Gogen Yamaguchi' book but rather Gichen Funakoshi's early vershion of Shotokan. Buyer beware of this. Buy this hard cover. You will not be disappointed.

The Ashley Book of Knots takes us back to a time when knots saved lives and put dinner on the table. Whether out at sea or in a pioneer cabin, knots were a part of daily life, one that is nearly lost today. But in this attractive, well-organized archive of more than 3,900 different knots--presented through 7,000 illustrations--the art of knot tying lives on, both as a historical reference and a reservoir of handy knowledge.
Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive, well illustrated, and fascinating.......2007-09-21
This is an excellent book for flipping through. It is well illustrated, and the descriptions of the knots are full of great information. I have encountered a few knots that I couldn't tie based on the words and pictures, but the vast majority of them are clear and can be mastered with a few minutes' effort.
My only real complaint is that, with the book alone, it is difficult to look up a particular knot by name. However, since the Ashley Book of Knots is the standard reference, Google is extremely well suited to overcoming this limitation. For example, the index doesn't mention Monkey's Fist, so I googled "monkey's fist ABOK" and didn't even have click any links before I found the correct number (2200).
All told, this is a great book and I'd recommend it highly.
Get knotting..........2007-09-05
As a self proclaimed 'knot enthusiast', I'll challenge that you're not a REAL knotter till the 'Ashley Book of Knots' is on your shelf! I've had hour apon hour of fun reading up and then trying all but the most difficult knots shown in this veritable encyclopaedia.. It makes a great talking point with dinner guests too!
THE One Source for Knots.......2007-08-29
I do decorative knotting and collect knotting books. This should have been one of my first purchases. This book has amazing historical and useage information as well as excellent drawings. The 620 pages are almost totally covered with how-to drawings and explanations of the knots. All the knots are numbered. When a new knot is introduced that is similar to a previous one, it references that number. Some of the names of knots are not what I've seen in other books, but I don't see that as a problem. If I could only buy one knot book, this would be it.
Try the square knot first.......2007-06-27
This is a fantastic book of knots. I would caution though that it is not an unstructional book with step by step details on how to tie the knots. If you have a basic understanding of knots you can figure out how to tie most of the knots in the book and with some practice and research you could get to where you could manage to tie anything I'm sure. This is a book that I thought I would add to my library but it seems I take it everywhere with me as I am fascinated with the different knots that I can continue to learn and teach to others.
The Final Authority on Knots.......2007-06-27
This is the ONE. The bible to sailors. The final authority to marlinspike seamanship and knot work. Worth every penny!

Customer Reviews:
Great for beginners.......2007-08-15
This book touches on all the subjects for beginners to learn about flipping. I got a LOT out of it. Basically, you need a lot of help, and a lot of people around you, and if you get that, you have a good chance of succeeding. Good luck with financing tho...it's very tough right now. You really need money to make a go at flipping houses!
Great Resource! A must read for anyone interested in Flipping houses........2007-04-09
Sebastian Howell explains the art of flipping houses in easy to understand and honest tone. She uses this book to lay out step by step all the things to consider and how to go through the whole process of flipping a house from, "Is this something I might want to do" to Depositing the money in the bank. Not only does she cover the whole process from beginning to end, but she covers all the options available to you at each stage. In doing this she covers the pro's and con's for each option and which people they would be best for and which people should choose another option at that particular stage.
I've read several other books trying to research if flipping is something I could do on the side. Howell puts flipping into perspective for those wanting to do it as their full time job as well as those not quite ready to give up their 9 to 5 jobs. Overall this is a very informative book and a definite resource for those just starting and those who are trying to make the decision... "To flip or not to flip?"
reasonable good.......2007-03-14
I just bought serveral similar books here. I would say this is the good book worth to reading. The good point is that it does tell something you may not know about flipping, not just giving you some basic ideas.
All you need to know to get started!.......2007-03-13
You've seen all the shows on television that shows the audience how easy people make money flipping houses. But, I'm sure that you've wondered, just like I have, just how possible is it? Well, Sebastian Howell has laid it all out in black and white. The author has described the process in universal terms, meaning you could apply her principles to any geographical area.
This book is easy to understand and deals in both the basics and the more complex material. It starts off with simple explanations and moves on to understanding the market and the business of making money through buying and selling houses. It gives clear definitions of the legal terms and the jargon that you'll come across in the industry. The author also clearly explains the various people you will associate with and their roles on your team. I really appreciated the examples used in the book. They help to clarify the material. The section covered on financing is comprehensive and understandable with tips to pulling it altogether.
One the most beneficial sections in the book is a complete list of what to look for in a `flippable' house. She gives clear instructions of what to take note of, what can work and what might cause some problems. Once you've found the ideal property, she leads you through the negotiating process. She deals with renovating properties and then moves the reader onto the selling process. The added bonus to the book is the comprehensive index at the back.
Well written, interesting, and fun to read........2007-01-09
Fast Real Estate Profits in Any Market by Sebastian Howell
This is an extremely well written and interesting book. One reason I found it credible is that it gives lots of warnings to be cautious, yet details how success in the real estate business is possible. So it's balanced. Another positive comment is that the book explains terms well, so that a complete novice knows what's going on. It's thorough, but never becomes tedious. The book explains that flipping is not only a means to an income, but is very satisfying on other levels. Restoring an old house is a creative endeavour, and providing buyers with a home they love is richly rewarding on an emotional level.
The way this book is written appeals to me and is in sync with my learning style. It's very linear, and discusses the process of flipping step-by-step. It explains clearly the pitfalls you may encounter along the way, and how to address them.
The book includes sample documents, and a comprehensive glossary.
I really can't find a reason to give this book fewer than five stars out of five. I have never even considered a career in real estate, let alone flipping, but I found the book very interesting.

Illuminating the comical confusion the lowly comma can cause, this new edition of Eats, Shoots & Leaves uses lively, subversive illustrations to show how misplacing or leaving out a comma can change the meaning of a sentence completely.
This picture book is sure to elicit gales of laughterand better punctuationfrom all who read it.
Customer Reviews:
Oooh, so close........2007-09-20
I thought this book was a lot of fun and could be helpful to someone who is struggling with comma placement. I wish I'd had this when I was in elementary school! However, I'm only giving it four stars because there is one example (maybe more, but I'm no expert) that is flat out wrong in its comma placement. Hello! I didn't notice any mistakes in the sequel, called
The Girls' Like Spaghetti. That one has the same format as this one, but is about apostrophes. Very cute!
Not only for kids for also for young adults.......2007-09-10
I am and English teacher in Mexico City and I bought "Eats, shoots & leaves" to use it with my students (25-30 y.o.) who were careless with their punctuation. After reading it they finally understood in a clear and fun way, how important punctuation is. They all enjoyed the book. I do too! It's a great tool for this purpose. I fully recommend it.
Uses humor to get the point across.......2007-08-13
As a teacher of students with learning disabilities, I am always looking for something to teach needed skills in a new way. By the time they reach high school, students should have learned grammar and punctuation rules - but all too often haven't. I suspect this is partly because of the way they have been taught in the past, and I have found that presenting the information in a new and often humorous way helps students assimilate learning they have missed in previous years. I have used the original Eats, Shoots and Leaves in class, and the pictures in this version will be even more useful.
Great book for children of many ages.......2007-06-09
I ordered this book thinking it might be too young for my 9-year-old daughter. However, when it arrived it was pored over by not only my 9-year-old, but her 13-year-old brother as well. The copy I sent to my sister's children (ages 5 and 7) was also well-received.
I recommend this book as a fun tool to teach and to re-enforce proper comma usage. It is a subtle and pain-free way to influence your child's writing skills for good. Buy the book. You won't regret it.
Who would've guessed that punctuation is fun?.......2007-05-13
This book was a best-seller in the UK and is good reading. It comes in a number of versions, including one with less text and more graphics that seems to make an impression on students in their early to mid teens. All versions are well written and enjoyable.
Book Description

A most.......2007-08-31
I rebuilt my bathroom and completely renovated the shower. This book was my bible. Of course I had other references and ideas to use, but pretty much kept to this book. I had it there by my side while constructing everything from the shower pan, shower walls and tiling it all. Sure I could have done it without this book and my wife would have made me hire a professional to redo my job.
Not to brag, but with the advice from this book people think that a professional DID remodel my bathroom. There is so much satisfaction in doing it yourself and to get a the results as good (and sometimes better) as a pro...
An excellent overview.......2007-06-22
John Bridge has put together an excellent reference for the experienced and novice tile setter alike, and if you're looking to learn the basics to put together a project for the first time, this book is a must read. John's light, conversational style makes the book a quick read, and as mentioned in another review, the online forum on the author's website is also an invaluable reference.
Highly recommended to those who need a to learn the ABCs of tile.
Tile Your World.......2007-05-13
I bought the bookas a gift for a friend who is quite interested in home renovation technique. She was thrilled by it and judging by her reaction, it must be an informative and well written book.
Everything you need to know!.......2007-02-13
This is the ultimate book for tile setters and for those who want to be tile setters. John focuse on all of the little things that the amateurs don't. focus on. The actual tiling itself is the last thing he focuse on. He will teach you the science of laying different types of tiles. You will learn everyting from floor deflection to room layout to determing the square footage and much more. I even learned of a new underlayment product made by Schluter that does not transfer cracks to the tiles due to structural movement and also a waterproofing membrane to use in shower tile installations! I have learned so much Thank you.
Great book for me - Novice/JOAT.......2007-02-06
We recently built our new home & I used this book & Setting Tile (Fine Homebuilding) to do all the tile work. One of our best & proudest features is the masterbath I built with lg garden tub and oversized corner dual head shower with dual niche all tiled together - We love it. I can't believe I was able to do it all with friends & family and alot of sweat/work.
Saved thousands over best few estimates. I see why the labor is so pricy now....
Recommend both books.

As a software engineer working in embedded applications environment, I needed to pick up digital electronics fundamentals fast. This book was extremely helpful, and enabled me to better understand the often-cryptic datasheets of microcontrollers.
Crystal Clear.......2002-08-24
When I took digital design class, I struggled to find a book that is easy to understand. I tried to read several books, including Roth's book, all of them are hard to understand. Thankfully I bought Floyd's book and his book is the best digital design book I have ever read so far.
1.) It has lots of colorful diagram that clearly illustrate the topics in each chapter.
2.) Each topic has its own exercises, and each exercises has solutions provided at the end of each chapter. Doing the exercises improves my understanding of the subject.
3.) Lots of examples in each topic. If you read and understand the examples, you can do the exercises.
4.) It covers some digital technology, including the PLD.
5.) Once you finish reading this book, you will be ready to read advanced digital design book.
Good job Mr. Floyd!
