Required Supplement to LabVIEW Documentation.......2007-10-01
This book fills in the yawning gaps of LabVIEW 8.xx's documentation and ambiguous and dense "HELP" sections. For example, as a retread LabVIEW user from over a decade ago, I looked for a simple step-by-step procedure to turn on, write, a single digital line. Just to turn on and off a single LED. The LabVIEW HELP returned many dozens of topics and forced me to read many extraneous topics to come to the conclusion that I was not going to find any help. Then, I tried to use the "easy" virtual instruments already made for the occassion, but the only one found after navigating through a thicket of unrelated virtual instruments was one which wrote a digital port of eight channels and no explanation of how to set it up to write one digital line. LabVIEW for Everyone... solved my problem and a whole lot more. This book is needed by anyone who is not an experienced LabVIEW programmer and who does not have the time or resources to attend training classes and wants to get started as soon as possible. Travis and Kring have created a readable and effective reference source for LabVIEW programmers. It is possibly the only book which addresses recent LabVIEW 8.xx software and truly does make it easy and fun.
A good introduction to LabView.......2007-08-26
While there is a a lot of good information of the NI website, I thought buying a book would be helpful as I needed to learn LabView quickly. I thought this book was very helpful and would definately be a good book for someone new to LabView. My only wish is that it would have more converage on the DAQ part. To me this is not only the key part of LabView, it is the only part that got me confused (and still does) at some points. Some additional coverage would have helped.
The Single Best Overall Book On LabVIEW.......2007-07-03
If you are a beginner to intermediate with LabVIEW, then the 3rd Edition is the single best book on LabVIEW available to you as of summer of 2007. If your budget only allows for one or a few books, put this one at the top of you list. I have read this book cover to cover, twice, and some sections in further detail as well as worked through all of the example code in detail.
I won't repeat the fine comments of others in their reviews. I speak from the perspective of 15+ years of working with LabVIEW, as a beginner in the early 1990s, a Certified LabVIEW instructor in the mid 90s, a small control and test system business founder and owner since the late 90s and an enthusiastic member of the LabVIEW community all during that time. I have bought most of the LabVIEW books that have ever been published as well as the (late) LTR newsletter and this 3rd Edition is the best book I have come across. If I were hiring someone new to do LabVIEW work, I'd give them a copy of this book first. The investment is a no brainer.
A great book for beginners.......2007-04-30
LabVIEW stands for: Laboratory Virtual Instrument Engineering Workbench. Unlike traditional programming languages (Basic, C, C++, Java, etc.), where you have to write text instructions line by line, LabVIEW is a graphical programming language. Here you create a program using a graphical notation; in other words, you interconnect functional blocks (or icons) via wires, through which data flow. LabVIEW is specifically designed for data acquisition (DAQ), data analysis, and presentation of results.
If you have never worked with LabVIEW, you are like me. First you have to acquire the basic concepts. After that you will be able to read and fully understand more advanced LabVIEW books (at amazon.com you will find a lot of them).
LabVIEW for everyone give you those basic concepts. It has 981 pages divided into 17 chapters, 6 appendixes and 1 glossary. The fundamentals of LabVIEW are shown in the first 10 chapters. Advanced topics can be found in the last 7 chapters. There are plenty of illustrations (almost every page has at least one).
In this book authors explain, step-by-step, every pop-up menu, every pull-down menu, every functional block and its applications, etc. To follow those explanations, you just need to have the basic knowledge of your PC's operating system. There is an accompanying CD-ROM that includes a 30-day evaluation version of LabVIEW 8.0 for Windows, which allows you to practice all activities (exercises) found inside the book.
Well organized, best choice I know of.......2007-04-02
Labview is a problematic language. At first it seems so easy, and then something comes up and you can spend a lot of time tracking it down.
This book is well organized and has a lot of good content. Other books I've bought were terrible by comparison. This is written by those who know what they are doing.
However, you still have to get under the hood and practice and learn how to work with the program. The book will help.

Customer Reviews:
Useful and interesting - STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.......2005-02-08
Despite the intimidating name and size of this tome, I found it fascinating to read. It covers everything from light bulb selection to rooftop chiller maintenance. The depth and breath of coverage is amazing.
This is not a hippie guide to backwoods eco-conservation. It is a practical manual, firmly grounded in science and economics that explains different strategies for maximizing comfort while minimizing energy use. In every case, the author examines both the pros and cons of the measure, and calculates the expected payback term. It is so helpful to have a book that is realistic in its treatment of energy conservation. Lots of books outline promising energy saving techniques, none I've read before talk so frankly about the problems you will encounter when you implement them.
Quite technical in many places, the text excels at explaining important concepts that are often ignored in other texts. I have a background in physics, but not until reading this book did I have a good grasp of the operation of absorption coolers or how the spectrum of a light bulb affects the visual comfort of the scene it illuminates. The concise overview of heat transfer mechanisms is more thorough than any thermodynamics textbook I've ever read.
Most important of all is the practical advice that is clearly based on a huge body of real experience. As the book so frequently points out, energy saving measures are useless if they break or are defeated by building occupants. Hundreds of (non-obvious) examples of these failures are given, with pictures.
This book would be great for anyone with responsibility for designing or maintaining buildings of any size. If you are hesitant to pay the high price, find it at a local library. I don't write many Amazon reviews, but after reading this book I felt compelled to strongly recommend it.
Superlative! A must have!.......2003-12-08
Superlative! The ENERGY EFFICIENCY MANUAL by Donald Wulfinghoff is a "must have" for professionals, libraries, facility managers, policy makers, homeowners, and anyone else who is serious about saving energy and cashing in on lower energy bills. It is the ultimate energy saving resource for businesses, industry, and government. PLUS, it will save money and reduce pollution, satisfying corporate bottom lines, policy makers, and environmentalists all at the same time. This book is unique. Highly informative, illustration-rich, and user-friendly, it is treasure trove of everything you need to know about energy efficiency from A to Z. Don't bother looking elsewhere -- the ENERGY EFFICIENCY MANUAL simply has it all. This book will pay for itself almost as fast as you can spot a hot air leak or install an energy-efficient light bulb!
-- Amy Vickers
A secret weapon for the energy auditor.......2003-07-01
As an energy auditor I'd almost call the Energy Efficiency Manual a secret weapon, except it has so many good ideas that I can't help but show it to many of the customers and prospective customers I meet. The diagrams are very useful, as is the self contained but well cross-referenced way in which each improvement measure has been written. For example, talking to the maintenance manager of a hospital, we looked at the diagrams of hot/cold deck multi-zone systems while discussing the pros and cons of upgrading a constant volume air conditioning system to a variable volume system. It is by far the most useful book on energy management that I have ever read (well, in the case of the Energy Efficiency Manual, that I have partially read - its an enormously large book!), and the ratings of each of the measures are particularly useful, along with the practical, no-nonsense approach. The book is extremely well cross referenced and Wulfinghoff has covered an enormous body of knowledge in writing the book. As someone fairly new to the field I'm grateful that he went to the effort of documenting and making available his knowledge and 30 odd years experience in the Energy Efficiency Manual.
Everything you always wanted to know, in plain English.......2001-04-25
I nodded my head in agreement while reading Wulfinghoff's philosophy about energy savings in commercial and light industrial facilities. He distills 20+ years of experience in this field with practical, no-nonsense how-tos to gain energy and dollar savings in a wide variety of facilities and end-uses: lighting, water use, steam systems, space heating, water heating, air conditioning, scheduling, pumps, energy management controls: its all here in a well-written, well-illustrated book.
Perhaps best of all, the author goes beyond theoretical considerations of high-tech efficiency products, with precautions of what works and what might fall short. He also reminds facility managers to be mindful of the human factors that can foil our best efforts. He offers suggestions on how to plan and manage efficiency upgrades complete with information for building operators and occupants, so that the savings persist.
Highly recommended for anyone managing energy use in facilities, ranging from individual buildings to college campuses to government facilities. [I am a local government energy manager myself.]
Provides practical advice for avoiding pitfalls.......2001-02-04
Donald Wulfinghoff's Energy Efficiency Manual is a massive, 1,536-page reference work that is organized to guide the reader quickly to the right information for their particular energy project, problem, or inquiry. The first part of this "user friend" manual has 400 logically grouped activities for improving energy efficiency. each activity begins with Ratings and a Selection Scorecard to help the reader judge the merits and difficulties of that particular activity. "Economics" sidebars estimates the savings, cost, and payback period. The "Traps & Tricks" sidebars provides practical advice for avoiding pitfalls plaguing energy conservation efforts. Energy Efficiency Manual will earn back its cover price over and over again and is an essential, core reference for personal, professional, and community library energy conservation and energy efficiency reference book collections.
Book Description
Created by bestselling author and MIT senior lecturer Peter Senge and a team of educators and organizational change leaders, this new addition to the
Fifth Discipline Resource Book series offers practical advice for educators, administrators, and parents on how to strengthen and rebuild our schools.
Few would argue that schools today are in trouble. The problems are sparking a national debate as educators, school boards, administrators, and parents search for ways to strengthen our school system at all levels, more effectively respond to the rapidly changing world around us, and better educate our children.
Bestselling author Peter Senge and his Fifth Discipline team have written
Schools That Learn because educatorsâwho have made up a sizable percentage of the audience for the popular Fifth Discipline booksâhave asked for a book that focuses specifically on schools and education, to help reclaim schools even in economically depressed or turbulent districts. One of the great strengths of
Schools That Learn is its description of practices that are meeting success across the country and around the world, as schools attempt to learn, grow, and reinvent themselves using the principles of organizational learning. Featuring articles, case studies, and anecdotes from prominent educators such as Howard Gardner, Jay Forrester, and 1999 U.S. Superintendent of the Year Gerry House, as well as from impassioned teachers, administrators, parents, and students, the book offers a wealth of practical tools, anecdotes, and advice that people can use to help schools (and the classrooms in them and communities around them) learn to learn.
You'll read about schools, for instance, where principals introduce themselves to parents new to the school as "entering a nine-year conversation" about their children's education; where teachers use computer modeling to galvanize student insight into everything from Romeo and Juliet to the extinction of the mammoths; and where teachers' training is not just bureaucratic ritual but an opportunity to recharge and rethink the classroom.
In a fast-changing world where school violence is a growing concern, where standardized tests are applied as simplistic "quick fixes," where rapid advances in science and technology threaten to outpace schools' effectiveness, where the average tenure of a school district superintendent is less than three years, and where students, parents, and teachers feel weighed down by increasing pressures,
Schools That Learn offers much-needed material for the dialogue about the educating of children in the twenty-first century.
Customer Reviews:
Schools should all be learning organizations.......2004-08-07
Senge became famous for his book on learning organizations. In this book, he and his co-authors apply those concepts and ideas specifically to educational institutions. While much of their focus is on K12, the ideas and process are applicable to higher education as well. So many management books are really fads with superficial value, but Senge's books are very practical and valuable. This book in particular demonstrates a great deal of passion on the part of the author's for their topic.
Length appeared overwhelming--but well worth it.......2004-03-14
Having been given the instructions to select a book of vision for a reading group in a graduate class, I didn't expect to choose one of over 500 pages. The length, however, is indicative of the power this book has for changing minds about schools and the way to structure them for learning. I found myself often reading passages aloud to other educators and anyone who would listen. Instead of stifling my curiosity, the book inspired me to dig deeper on the five disciplines. A great book for creating a vision of education that includes schools where students are learning. I may purchase another one to loan out!
A great resource book for educators.......2001-08-31
This is an essential book for anyone interested in education. Its comprehensive coverage gives much background, even at the risk of being distracting when you want to follow-up on the leads to so many interesting source-books and links. Though you are told to dip in anywhere, you must read the first section, esp. "The Industrial Age System of Education" by Senge and "A Primer to the Five Disciplines" (Personal Mastery, Mental Models, Shared Vision, Team Learning and Systems Thinking) (pp. 27-93).
The authors consider this book a "prequel" to their other books about learning organizations (p.7). That's true. Though this is the most recent book, you can start with this one and go on to the others for further depth. Some repetitions may only serve well for mastery.
The whole book is very readable and informative. Concepts are clearly explained. It follows the same excellent editing format as The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook and The Dance of Change.
When you get too enthused by so many ideas and success stories of innovations, heed the advice for "The Strategy of Organizational Change". "Focus on one or two new priorities for change, not twelve. Most school systems are already overwhelmed with change. They don't need a new initiative; they need an approach that consolidates existing initiatives, eliminates "turf battles," and makes it easier for people to work together toward common ends." (p.25)
There are just too many passages that you wish to quote. The book is a treasure mine. However, for those (esp. busy administrators) who find the volume too daunting or verbose (592 pages!) and still want to get a handle on launching into transforming their schools into learning organisations, I would recommend, "Ten Steps to a Learning Organization" and start with the simple questionnaire given there.
Well Researched Current Education for all Student's Success.......2001-03-13
If you are an educator, parent or administrator, this handbook will enable you to obtain the crucial, leading edge knowledge in learning styles, multiple intelligences, personal neuro-physiology that enables one to "know thyself." Self-esteem and self-awareness, cognitive learning, including the necessary skills to make one prepared for "life at 21 years old," are also main considerations when teaching students to capitalize on their individual strenghts and wisdom.
Schools that Learn also emphasizes the importance of mastery, synergizing curricula presented, and authentic assessment vs. basing students knowledge purely on standardized test-taking.
This helpful manual is extremely important for educators, administrators, and parents, to read as it combines the aforementioned information and applies it to "building strengths that will be useful in career decision making."
Finally,Schools that Learn emphasizes the importance of keeping a "spirit-filled" outlook while learning, the extreme helpfulness of a mastermind group, accelerated and lifelong education, and of course giving back what you have learned to the community. This "cause and effect" is often forgotten in busy professtional lives, but truly ensures success for those who "get it."
Helps Design the School of the Future.......2000-11-03
SCHOOLS THAT LEARN is both a visionary and practical guide for how schools must evolve to meet the needs of students in the next 20 years. The use of multiple authors and perspectives mirrors some of the changes our schools must make to meet the needs of a new age. As Professional Development Director at a diverse Jesuit high school in San Francisco, I recommend this book to any educator, K-college. Senge's work will help prepare students for an era requiring a strong traditional academic foundation coupled with the need for creativity, and the social, emotional, and intellectual skills to work in high performing teams needed to rebuild our world.

Very Relaxing.......2007-09-28
I enjoyed this book very much. I kept it on my coffee table and would color in it to relax. Now that each page is colored I have moved it to my bookshelf.
Very nice!.......2007-06-12
Out of the half dozen coloring books we bought last year this one was our favorite. Every design felt well thought out and was quite fun to color. My only complaint is that there weren't more pictures to color. This is well worth buying if you're looking for a challenge to your coloring skills.
Great Book!!! Thanks!!.......2007-01-25
This is a very unusal book,...I think I am going to really enjoy this one!!! Thanks again!!! Arcrystal
Just do it!.......2007-01-13
The book sat around for awhile, the markers I used didn't work well with the paper. Then I started with colored pencils, now I'm addicted!
Love It!.......2006-11-28
I ordered 6 coloring books on the same day, and out of all of them, this one IS my FAVORITE. The designs are more than meaningless geometric shapes. They're really pretty!! And the pages are nice and big, and you can tear them out!! So you don't have to worry about that annoying bump getting in the way when you're trying to color.
MAIN POINT the designs are pretty :) I recommend.
Book Description
Due to popular demand, this extraordinary book project by Damien Hirst is now available in a reduced format. This dynamic and provocative collection of Hirst's ideas and obsessions is a powerful combination of text and visual elements. Each piece is set against a visual narrative of drawings, words, photography, typography, pop-ups, and other special effects that make this book like no other. An essay by cult novelist Gordon Burn looks at Hirst's work and the breadth of its impact. Designed by Jonathan Barnbrook, this is a landmark publication that has redefined the fine art monograph. AUTHOR BIO: Damien Hirst was born in Bristol and studied fine art at Goldsmiths College in London. In 1995, he won the prestigious Turner Prize. He has had recent solo exhibitions at the White Cube, London; the Marble Palace, Russia; Saatchi Gallery, London; Gagosian Gallery, New York; and Tate Gallery, London. Gordon Burn is an award-winning writer of both fiction and nonfiction. His book of interviews with Damien Hirst, On the Way to Work, was published in 2002.
Customer Reviews:
this book is a masterpiece by Hirst and Barnbrook.......2000-11-23
What a tour de force! This is one of the most beautifully designed books money can buy. Jonathan Barnbrook created (together with Damien Hirst) a timeless masterpiece of book design. If you want to see what is possible in this medium, you want to own this book. It is hauntingly beautiful, filled with amazing interactive pieces bringing you as close to Hirst's thinking and work as printed matter can get you.
What you are about to experience is a superbly intelligent visual introduction ot Hirst's process united with breathtaking depictions of the results.
A tiny note for the "practical book-user": This book is a work of Damien Hirst's. In such a publication one should not be surprised to find "safety guidlines" on how to successfully "deal with one's own life" - by using a gun. Gun owners might think twice before showing this book to their loved ones. Yet that's another story. Or maybe not, from Hirst's point of view? :*)
The Daring Realm of Damien Hirst.......2000-10-27
Damien Hirst is one of the most creative and influential contemporary artists. This is a wonderful book that examines the whole of Damien Hirst's career and all of his beautifully shcoking ideas. This book itself is an amazing work of art. It contains not only many wonderful full color panels, but it has all kinds of extremely interesting interactive pages that mimic some of Hirst's work. I highly suggest this wonderful book that does justice to this incredible artist.

Patricia T. O'Conner's Words Fail Me is written in the same lighthearted tone as her snappy grammar guide, Woe Is I. This time out, O'Conner tackles the writer's art. "Good writing," she says, "is writing that works." This book is the perfect text for the novice writer who tends to gravitate toward comedic instructors. "Crummy spelling," says O'Conner, "is more noticeable than crummy anything else." Organizing your material "may be a pain in the butt, but it's thankless, too!" "Write as though you were addressing someone whose opinion you value, even if the reader is ... a stingy insurance company that won't pay for your tummy tuck." O'Conner's material isn't new--like many such books, Words Fail Me advocates the use of small words, fresh verbs, and only well-chosen modifiers--but rarely is a primer so amusing. And the clever titles strewn throughout--"Taking Leave of Your Tenses," "The It Parade"--provide added pleasure, particularly for anyone who knows how hard it can be to put a headline on a piece of writing. --Jane Steinberg
Book Description
Whether you are working on the novel that's been in the back of your mind for years or simply facing an increasing demand to write well at work or school, the fact remains: more and more of us are writing more often these days-reports, e-mails, faxes, and newsletters. But despite the increase in written communication, something has been lost-the fundamentals of good writing. Grammar maven Patricia T. O'Conner comes to the rescue with the most painless, practical, and funny writing book ever written. In short, snappy chapters filled with crystal-clear examples, amusing comparisons, and humorous allegories that cover everything from "Pronoun Pileups" and "Verbs That Zing" to "What to Do When You're Stuck," O'Conner provides simple, straightforward tips to help you sort your thoughts and make sentences that make sense. Push aside those stuffy old-fashioned rule books, because O'Conner has written the most accessible and enjoyable book yet for today's writer.
Customer Reviews:
Finally, a real book on writing........2006-08-16
Over the years I have purchased many books on writing, only to find that most of the writing is about how to find a publisher, with very little devoted to how to write. This book is an exception. It covers many of the nuances of writing that slip through the cracks, and is written with humor.
One of the best!.......2006-04-06
Indispensable tool for anyone that writes anything, be it novels, e-mails, memos, or book reports. Get it with "Woe is I" (all about proper grammar) and hit them with a highlighter & notepad handy. Together they may not cover everything writers need to know, but EVERYTHING they cover MUST be known by all writers. Basic rules are forgotten all the time & these 2 jewels read fast, providing easy to remember examples of proper English. Invaluable!
A Nice Book.......2005-09-12
This is quite a nice book, most suitable for those who have not thought a lot or read widely about good writing but who are looking for a broad beginning. The book is light on grammar, and the science of clear writing is not to be found. It improves in later chapters, where examples of good writing are well chosen.
The book labors some points and underscores witticisms, which will irritate readers who read attentively. The prose in many places is unpolished. To that extent, it lives up to its title.
Much better is "Woe is I", Patricia O'Conner's first book.
What a help !`.......2005-08-21
This little book gives the beginning writer many tips on nearly each page. It covers how to organize your writng, it gives basic, but often forgotten use of proper English, it gives the aspiring writer hope for sucessfull entry into the world of published writing. I can't say enough to sing the praises of this basic little book to start a beginning writer get off the ground.
Add to your writer's desk collection.......2005-03-02
Reasons to buy/read this book
1. You have writer's block and need help.
2. You feel that you've confused the many rules of writing.
3. Your writing style bores you.
4. It takes you three pages to explain something that's complicated.
I read "Words Fail Me" for motivation while writing my second book. The best way to move past a writer's block is to lift your confidence by sharpening your writing skills. O'Conner delivers writing confidence in about 20 easy-to-digest chapters.
Patricia T. O'Conner's work is neither preachy nor boring. She speaks to the aspiring writer who may have forgotten some grammar rules while queuing you to times when you may not need to adhere to all the rules in the grammar book.
Her writing is witty and makes grammar fun, for once. It's a neat refresher book to add to your writing library.

Configure the Center Just How You Need It.......2004-03-04
I purchased the whole series. At times different forms call for my attention and the additional selection is definitely appreciated. The variety is quite good. They range from simpler to complex, with open spaces which leave room for my own variations. The author's designs seem to create a sacred space in which the individual's own light can shine, even if all they want to do is simply "color" a bit. I would expect this flexibility to make them accessible to people with widely varying skills: children, many disabled persons, the elderly, the imaginative and the gifted artist, as well and most of us who are somewhere in between. Yet they are undemanding so that no one need miss out on the calm center and its healing.
Everyone's Mandala Coloring Book Series.......2000-09-13
Author, artist, transpersonal psychotherapist and business person all describe what Monique Mandali is, but do not tell you who she is. I've been privileged to meet Monique and I know that she is a seeker traveling her path. Her walking stick is her love for all, especially children. Ms. Mandali offers a series of four coloring books for children and adults. There are three different delights in the original Everyone's Mandala Coloring Book series, each consisting of 22 designs. While the original three books in the series contain designs by the author, the latest (and perhaps greatest) has 25 peace mandalas from children all around the world. The Peace Mandala Coloring Book is very special because the mandalas are designed by children unencumbered by the pressure of adult living. Further, they bring a variety of spiritual as well as geographical cultures to bear.
Monique Mandali has given us something special. Not only do we find drawings to color that can aid in health and serenity...Everyone's Mandala Coloring Book Series is additionally special because they represent the best part of Monique Mandali, her love!
Wonderfully centering activity and a great gift!.......1999-07-06
Volume 2 of Everyone's Mandala Coloring Book has given me even more opportunities to share this wonderful, relaxing experience with friends of all ages - and to enjoy this peaceful, centering activity. Kudos to the author and creator!
A classic among mandala coloring books. Wonderful!.......1999-06-15
Gorgeous designs. I've purchased several copies as gifts for kids as well as older people and am not about to stop buying this wonderful coloring book. Plus I really like the perforated pages for easy removal of the pages. Thanks, Monique!

The Writing Teacher's Sourcebook
ASIN: 0195104161 |
Book Description
With Writing without Teachers (OUP 1975) and Writing with Power (OUP 1995) Peter Elbow revolutionized the teaching of writing. His process method--and its now commonplace "free writing" techniques--liberated generations of students and teachers from the emphasis on formal principles of grammar that had dominated composition pedagogy. This new collection of essays brings together the best of Elbow's writing since the publication of Embracing Contraries in 1987. The volume includes sections on voice, the experience of writing, teaching, and evaluation. Implicit throughout is Elbow's commitment to humanizing the profession, and his continued emphasis on the importance of binary thinking and nonadversarial argument. The result is a compendium of a master teacher's thought on the relation between good pedagogy and good writing; it is sure to be of interest to all professional teachers of writing, and will be a valuable book for use in composition courses at all levels.

Probably Elbow's best book yet!.......2000-02-28
Probably Elbow's best book yet. This is a superb book reconciling the often conflicting dimensions of the writing process--public vs. private, high-stakes vs. low-stakes writing, freewriting vs. crafted writing, etc.--so much so that it has virtually eliminated my 15-year-old case of writer's block. Despite its scholarly appearance, this is a supremely *practical* book on the writing process, that attempts to lower the stakes and make writing accessible to all of us, while simultaneously cultivating the ground for excellent writing and thinking. Highly recommended!

Nice but expensive.......2007-07-26
I thought it was a good book but too expensive for what you get in it. She has another book, Painting Rocks for Kids, that is a lot less expensive and has many fun projects for starting out.

Book Description
"Millions of people want to know the origin of the words they use. Word columns in daily newspapers and numerous books attempt to satisfy their curiosity. Word histories are usually digested like pills: the user is interested in getting well, not in the chemistry of the prescribed medication. Those who send letters to the Editor also want a straight answer without bothering about how "editors" come by their knowledge. Therefore, they fail to realize that etymologies are seldom definitive and that the science of etymology is intensely interesting. Perhaps if someone explained to them that, compared to the drama of words, Hamlet is a light farce, they might develop a more informed attitude toward philological research and become students of historical linguistics rather than gullible consumers of journalists' pap."--Anatoly Liberman Word Origins is the only guide to the science and process of etymology for the layperson. This funny, charming, and conversational book not only tells the known origins of hundreds of words, but also shows how their origins were determined. Liberman, an internationally acclaimed etymologist, takes the reader by the hand and explains the many ways that English words can be made, and the many ways in which etymologists try to unearth the origins of words. Part history, part how-to, and completely entertaining, Word Origins invites readers behind the scenes to watch an etymologist at work.
Customer Reviews:
thorough, but a little self gratifying.......2007-06-29
The author of this book is highly knowledgeable about the origins of words and attuned to the many misconceptions non-etymologists may have about the subject. However, the authors love of word origins seems to impede his ability to discuss them in a clear and concise fashion. So many words are presented in every chapter - even the titles of the chapters consist of too many words - that the reader looses track of the topic in that particular chapter. Thorough, but could be organized (and edited) a bit better.
word origins.......2006-11-05
very interesting to really know the origins of the many words and phrases we use in every day language...I sure have more respect for the phrases being used.
