Customer Reviews:
Wow, making paper is easy!.......2000-04-05
This is a very informative and fun book. I never thought making my own paper could be so easy. It's not too technical and you can find everything you need to make paper in your own house! I highly recommend this book. Enjoy!
Customer Reviews:
Well worth the money.......2004-07-28
The two things I like most about this book is its thoroughness in the techniques it shows and its easy to understand and follow instructions. Not only does it give step-by-step written instructions, but it also shows you pictures at each step, unlike some craft books that only give you a picture of the final project. The book also contains a variety of projects, and they are decorated in different styles. Most other craft book only offer one style, such as very -artsy- (i.e. colorful) or very -country-. There is nothing wrong with these styles, but it is nice to have a variety of inspiring choices, such as this book provides. I reccommend it to both the beginner and more experienced crafter.
Excellent Resource for those who want to make books or paper.......2003-02-16
Altho' I am somewhat of a beginning artist, I want to use my form to make books and embellished items. After comparing this book to others, I found this WELL worth the investment -- even at full price. I can hardly wait to get started! It covers very basic techniques to more advanced, "artsier" stuff, and makes it simple enuf to follow along and figure it out. Complete with great photos and simple instructions...if you're interested in making books or paper, this is a great resource...
Excellent Book.......2003-01-03
I have 5 books on making photo albums and books. I love this book. The book describes how to make paper and then get's into how to make books. It is by far a useful resource to own. A+++ in my book.
Book Description
This valuable reference covers everything, from the basics to more advanced techniques like shaped sheets, embossing, laminating,
and watermarking. Included are extensive step-by-step instructions
on processing pulp, building papermaking equipment, and making paper-based projects like cards, lamp shades, and sculpture.
Customer Reviews:
Useful, basic guide.......2007-05-23
I checked the Papermaker's Companion out of the library just for some basic information about paper making. I found myself referring to it so often that I renewed the loan. And again. Finally, I broke down and bought my own copy. The recipes and instructions are clear and fairly comprehensive. The book contains at least a basic explanation of everything from using recycled paper to making your own pulp from plants and leaves. The projects are interesting and clearly explained. This is a good reference book for experienced paper makers and a good beginner's guide for those just starting out. Although it does contain a few projects for kids, this book is more appropriate for older teens and adults.
Excellent for beginners and beyond.......2007-01-18
Finally, I found a book that isn't about pretty pictures and way out there techniques. This book is about making paper. Helen gives you all the nuances necessary to make paper on your own. This is a comprehensive, information-packed book that is THE must-have for any beginner or even intermediate. Too many books show us beautiful photos of great art work but neglect to give us those finer details that would make our efforts a success. This book shows you how to succeed.
Great for first time papermaker........2007-01-06
I received this book as a gift and I really like it. I am a brand new papermaker and was able to use this book right away and make a recycled paper batch that looked great. The details about making a mould and presses really helped. I recommend this book not only because it has the basics but it also has intermediate concepts.
perfect book for beginners.......2006-06-15
This book assumes you know nothing about hand making paper. It explains each step and gives you the terminology.
Lives up to its title.......2006-01-01
This book contains probably all the technical information you will need to make your own paper from any number of materials -- whether you are starting by recycling paper from your waste bin, or going out into the wild and harvesting the plants yourself. Diagrams are included for most equipment, from simple deckles to elaborate vacuum presses. Included also are the most extensive instructions I've ever seen on how to do large-scale casting, via armature and otherwise. If you are seriously interested in papermaking, you cannot go wrong with this book.
If you are already making paper and looking for project ideas, there are a few, but that isn't really the point of this book. Includes an index and resource guide

Book Description
Handmade paper has a unique texture and an individual quality that makes it not only a surface to write or print on, but also an object of beauty. With a small investment in equipment (or the supplies to make it from scratch), a small harvest of backyard weeds or garden plants, and the guidance of papermaking expert Helen Hiebert, anyone can make exquisite papers right in the home kitchen.
Hiebert’s basic papermaking techniques, laid out in illustrated step-by-step instructions, make it easy to blend and shape a variety of organic papers from such common plants as hosta, milkweed, and thistledown, as well as the more unusual pineapple, yucca, and seaweed. She describes how to collect, harvest, and process the plant fibers and then create sheets using both Western and Japanese techniques.
Inspired by the community of papermaking artists she is a part of, Hiebert features profiles of papermakers from around the world, highlighting their individual tips and techniques. She also includes project instructions for using handmade paper to create one-of-a-kind cards and envelopes, multi-paneled lampshades, and accordion-fold books. There are also instructions for embellishing techniques such as adding flower petals, creating collages, and dyeing with richly colored walnut shells.
From plant to finished paper, the simple completeness and beauty of
Papermaking with Garden Plants & Common Weeds will appeal to craftspeople, gardeners, environmentalists, teachers, and anyone who enjoys creating from nature.
Customer Reviews:
The children's book that isn't.......2007-01-14
This book was listed under children's books, albeit via an Amazon link. We bought it as a gift for a 10-year old. A children's book it isn't; it is designed for a serious adult hobbiest. Since we bought it with several other items using SuperSaver, returning it would mean paying shipping, etc. It's just lying on the sofa; we will give it away or throw it away.
Inspiration for everyone.......2006-08-04
Helen Hiebers 'Papermaking with Garden Plants and Common Weeds' is a richly illustrated guide to papermaking. It takes you through the whole process the making of the tools, to harvesting, treating the fibers, couching paper and using the paper for different projects. There is never just one way of doing things, but a basic instruction and then suggestions for several other ways of doing the same.
Helen Hiebert is conscious of safety and points out all things dangerous and risky and how to protect yourself.
This book is a joy to read and a great handbook for making paper.

A one-stop resource for the history and technique of this ancient craft. Want to know when the first paper mill was established in your state or Country and what was used for raw material? Look it up in the detailed chronology. A must have book for any paper aficionado!
very informative.......2002-08-27
Everything you've ever wanted to know about papermaking and more. This book has a lot of detailed information about the history and techniques of papermaking all over the world, but is so detailed it can be very tiresome. Definitely reads more as a textbook than light reading.
An Essential Historical Primer for Papermaking.......2000-10-18
"Dard Hunter is still recognized as the world's foremost authority on paper and papermaking. This is the classic work on papermaking, used as a text and reference in classrooms, museums and libraries." More historical than how-to, you'll find just about every aspect of papermaking covered in this book. Over 320 illustrations show actual pages from rare books and scrolls from every corner of the world, scenes of past and present-day papermaking, tools, materials, and watermarks. A two-page map illustrates the text to trace the 1000-year journey of papermaking from China to Europe, and a chronology of paper and paper related developments over 4500 years.
Customer Reviews:
Great book on Marbling.......1999-09-01
What keeps this from five-stars is that I have not seen any other book as comprehensive as this one.
The history portion seems exhaustive, and I began to keel over with the descriptions of what happens when you marble (the paints form a 'lip' with the carragheenan to prevent them from blending together), but the color plates are worth the price of the book alone.
There are facsimiles of old German marbling swatch books (which I'd love to get a copy of).
This book is for those who love marbled paper (and fabrics) and who want to know about the history. Might not be the best First Book on marbling, but the process is best learned in a classroom setting, IMHO.
Customer Reviews:
One of the Best Books on Papermaking by Hand.......2005-04-02
Packed with inspiration, how-tos, details, instructions & great images. A must for every papermaking and papier maché library - pulp painting, pulp spraying, sculptural techniques with paper. Wow!

This wonderfully illustrated book examines the history of papermaking and also outlines step-by-step instructions for creating distinct handmade paper.
A wonderful resource book for any paper enthusiast!
Delight yourself making handmade paper.......2000-05-11
One of the most interesting books I have ever seen. This is a very important book for all the people who makes handmade paper. In this book we can find since how to make a papyrus sheet, one of the most antique techniques of making paper, till paper sculpture, a very actual and sophisticated work. The explanation about the way to do is simple and detailed, and the photos are very clear, so we can compare the final results when we try to experiment what author proposes.
A great source for creative use of papermaking techniques.......1998-08-24
This book is one of our favourites - we have nearly 30 books on the subject ! There are plenty of photos of processes and enough information to get anyone with a creative bent well on their way. Photos of a range of artists' works give additional inspiration and a good glossary gives the beginner a sound grasp of papermaking terms. Definitely recommended as a book all aspiring papermakers and paper artists should have.
Artisticamente bien presentado, una gran ayuda........1998-07-28
