Favorite Graphic Design Book.......2007-09-21
I just finished reading all but one or two chapters of this book for a class where this was the primary text. I have to say that this book goes everywhere with me and has become a favorite. Compared to the other text books I had this semester (and many others as well), this was a breath of fresh air. The writing was never dry and it never dragged. What I read really stuck with me and I looked forward to my weekly reading. Also having the exercises at the end of most of the chapters is wonderful for a student for further learning that truly is self-paced. I plan on doing most, if not all of these exercises for further practice. I am definitely going to have to look into Landa's other titles as well.
Best G.D. Book out there!.......2007-04-04
Was advised to buy from instrucor as additional class materials and found I love this book! Covers from core information to breaking down new media and cutting edge styles. Would not go without this book if you are interested in learning about graphic design as an art and a science. Great organization and use of information -good for any level designer.
Don't pay retail... GET IT ON AMAZON!
Graphics Student.......2007-02-23
I am taking a night course that required this book. Amazon.com had the best price. The book itself has many beautiful graphic illustrations and the text is fairly easy to read. It is not the total snoozer I thought it would be and has many fun projects to illustrate the points made in the text. All-in-all not a bad course book although this is not something I would have ever picked up for personal reading.
Great for Intermediate Designers.......2007-02-20
This book is a big help if you have been thrust into a job where you must come up with a great design for a poster or flyer. Gives you as many or as little steps as you think are necessary. Good reference.
Great Text For Art students.......2007-01-04
Combining great illustrations along with good information, this text truly delivers what many are lacking in. From print to web design, this book explores many facets of Design.

Book Description
Read the Prose. Study the illustrations. And apply what you have learned to design your own pages. It's easy with Basics of Design; Typography and Layout for Beginners! This heavily illustrated, compact guide is ideal for readers with no graphic design or art education background who need to create first-rate visual page designs. Entrepreneurs challenged with designing their own business cards, and administrative assistants suddenly put in charge of producing newsletters and fax cover pages, are just two examples of readers who benefit from the information in this primer. Its uniquely conversational tone - combined with numerous "before" and "after" illustrations- provides everything needed to design pages as effective as those of professional designers. Part One introduces readers to important design principles, as well as how to use color and images to add impact to designs. Part Two concentrates on the basics of typography. Part Three features a number of common design projects of the variety frequently assigned to non-designers (.., company business cards, fax cover letters, graphical and statistical reports, and more). To further aid readers, each project is accompanied by a brief listing of some of the special considerations involved in that type of visual page design. The final chapter of the book lists useful design books and resources for readers interested in advancing their typography and layout skills.

Using Book for Graphic Design begin class.......2006-02-23
There are just enough illustrations. The chapters are setup in a way to support teaching a begining Graphic Design class. Exercises, a mini quiz and examples are built into each chapter-subject of good basic design.
Book lays flat when going through the pages and the binding should hold up through many page turning days.
A complete disappointment.......2005-10-25
The book contaings a whole lot of reading but very little illustration. I do not understand how the author anticipated to convey design, layout and typography by writing about it only. A book like this must be full of illustration. To write about design without illustrating them is an oxymoron. I would definitely not recommend this book for beginners.
Excellent Primer on Design.......2005-09-28
This book takes you through the basics of the page design process, focusing in each chapter on one of a number of themes such as contrast, repetition and alignment (and several others). I'm not an expert but have designed pages off and on for some years and this book was a breath of fresh and inspirational air. It is clear, useful, has loads of examples and, above all, it had an instant impact on my page designs from CV to web page to software interface to data sheet. Highly recommended. As comparison, I bought another book at the same time on typography, didn't learn a thing about design, and set it aside having suffered pages of historical theory.
The perfect starting point........2004-09-13
There is not much mistaking the purpose of this book judging from the title. It is for beginners, and it delivers admirably. Graham takes the reader step by step and in a very systematic way through the basic tenets of graphic design. Each chapter deals with a specific aspect of design and how the reader can use it to communicate more effectively. Graham gives plenty of examples of what to do as well as what not to do and the text is well illustrated, though it could have used more examples in color. That is a small criticism though and one that does not really detract from the book in any way. The beginning designer will come away from this book with a firm foundation in design and with skills that they will utilize for the rest of their career. If you are looking to learn about graphic design then this book is the perfect starting point.
Coherent and Accessible.......2004-02-19
A friend of mine recommended this book as a solid introduction to graphic design. The author, Lisa Graham, covers the principles of design effectively and even throws in some unexpectedly funny explanations that really make the point. For example, the beginning of the Balance chapter is hilarious and made me realize that a page really can make a person feel weird, if it isn't designed using the design principles. Once I read that balance chapter, I realized that many of her illustrations also were surprisingly humerous, and reveals what must be a delightful sense of humor.
If you buy this book, keep in mind that the humor is used to support the points Graham makes, and is not the sole focus of the book. This is after all a design book and makes some serious and informative points.
Perhaps what is most effective about this book is the thorough explanations she gives on why a design works and why it doesn't work. This is a refreshing change from many other introductory design books that I looked at where the primary focus of the text seemed to be to show off pretty pictures. Pretty pictures are nice, but WHY do the designs work? WHY don't they work. Basics of Design tells you why, and in such a wonderfully understandable way that you remember, and easily apply what Graham teaches.
Good job Lisa. When are you going to write more books on graphic design? I'll be sure to keep an eye out for more of your work!

Awesome book.......2007-06-08
I found this book extraordinarily helpful. A great resource of information presented in a way that anyone can understand and grasp. Every page is full of text and pictorial descriptions. Great for the visual learners. I also think this book would be helpful for an educated graphic designer looking to expand their library. The other four books in this basic design series are similar in the quality and delivery of the goods. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in graphic design.

Good for New-Be's.......2007-03-26
Would have given it 5 stars, but its a bit too basic for my needs, although the title "Basic Model Railroad Track Plans" should have given that away. I was more interested in the track plans then the "Basic" part.
For those interested in getting into model railroads, this may be a good place to start, it helps you with the basics, but if your just looking for layout ideas you may want to pick up something else.
Great starter book.......2007-02-21
There is a lot of information on the web and in many books on
model railroads -- too much for any one book. This book is a great
source of basic information on getting started (laying track, cork,
wiring, etc.) that helped me get started. With clear pictures and
great explanations, this gives you enough background to start and
to read from more complex sources as you need.
Some Nice Ideas in Small Spaces.......2006-08-30
The two biggest problems of any model railroader are lack of money and lack of space. This book nicely addresses both of those problems. The first is addressed indirectly because small layouts cost less than those that take over large buildings. These are mostly intended to fit in small areas, 4'x8' usually, and they are well though out, interesting and cost effective.
In addition to the layout ideas, the book begins with tips for putting a layout together. These are invaluable. They will be known by people with experience in the hobby but many neophytes don't know them; they are useful for all.
If I have any real complaint it is that I would have liked to seen photos of the actual completed layouts instead of just the schematics and rational. Still, it's a good book.
A recommended resource book for model railroaders.......2002-04-13
Basic Model Railroad Track Plans: Small Starter Layouts You Can Build is a superbly presented collection of detailed plans and layouts for amazing and vibrant finished results. From models of St. Paul Central to Valley Forge Central, these scaled-down railway s reflect locations across America. The informal and practical text offers useful tips for dedicated hobbyists and color illustrations combined with detailed three-dimensional diagrams help to clearly explain the methodology of construction. Basic Model Railroad Tarck Plans is an excellent and recommended resource book for model railroaders.

Coffee Table Book.......2003-01-25
This book is supposed to explain "what makes a design's layout compelling" (it doesn't), show "myriad ways type can be used" (definitely not, most of the time the author doesn't even tell you what type face is being used), and demonstrate how to use "color to get the message across" (yes, there are some nice examples here but no CMYK or RGB color guide).
More often than not, this book resembles a coffee table book-- nice images, little information, weak analysis, and nothing noteworthy to learn. Basically, you buy this book to just flip, flip, flip, and then you are done with it. Still, it has a couple of nice images to look at, and maybe give you an idea or two, so it gets 2 stars. But don't buy it if you are seeking inspiration or if you want to learn to design.

Yikes !.......2003-08-30
I'm relatively new to the world of graphic design, but I'm quite comfortable with desktop publishing and computer graphics. I found this book to be a mish-mash of ideas and concepts that confused more than educated. I found over 20 terms introduced in one chapter with no follow up definition or description. The author jumps from one subject to another aimlessly; like going from a discussion on papers to handling a client's budget (she calls it the "Budget Ogre")in the same paragraph. Don't waste your time on this book.
Excellent for beginners.......1998-03-05
This is a somewhat simplistic, but very good book for beginning designers. There are a lot of good samples and the author talks you through the why's and wherefore's. I wish it had more specific information on how to accomplish these designs using more standard software (like Pagemaker). Oh, well, it's still a good book.

Mounting Optics in Optical Instruments (SPIE Press Monograph Vol. PM110)
ASIN: 0070592543 |
Book Description
A complete optical systems design course for general optical engineers! The "first cut" design of an optical system -- anything from a telescope to a complicated VR helmet -- is usually not done by a specialist but by a more general optical engineer. This book details the basic design principles and techniques for doing so in a clear, concise, "low-math" way that such generalists will readily understand -- and appreciate. Practical, step-by-step coverage includes succinct equations, simple diagrams, and clear explanations. The chapter on selecting stock lens (to test a concept or to prove out a possible finished device) should be especially useful.
Customer Reviews:
First step into the art of optical design.......2006-06-07
This book is a good introduction to the art of optical design. It is an excellent first read for any student who wants to learn practical optics, avoiding heavy math and focusing mainly on real-life examples following simple reasoning backed up with essential formulas and calculations, which illustrate how to derive a preliminary design, before starting any optimisation with some optical software. Nowadays anyone could do optical design using powerful package like OSLO, Zemax or Code V, it is so easy to ask the program to find a solution for you, but without understanding the basic principles, it is just an illusion that one can really design an optical system.
If one really wants to invest time into optical design, at least they should cover fundamentals, and this book gives this foundation in a concise and comprehensive form (200 pages book is not a formidable brick). In terms of practical use, it is similar to Donald C. O'Shea's book "Elements of Modern Optical Design", which also contains a lot of sample calculations, yet examples given in both books are very different. "Elements of Modern Optical Design" covers more about exact ray traces and third order aberrations (which can be done with the use of an optical software), whereas "Practical Optical System Layout" covers mainly paraxial calculations and focuses on optical elements and their combinations to reduce particular type of aberrations. A deeper treatment of aberration theory can be found in "Modern Optical Engineering" book by the same author, and in particular for lens design in his outstanding, but more advanced book "Modern Lens Design". Of course one may read introductions in Mellesgriot catalogue about different optical elements and their usage, but to get a systematic coverage of various concepts for optical design, this book is a good start.
Incomplete........2004-09-24
This book is not complete enough for what it claims to be. A full time lens designer might find it useful as another opinion though.
A sort of back to the future II.......2003-10-17
The book title is quite interesting: PRACTICAL OPTICAL SYSTEM LAYOUT AND USE OF STOCK LENSES? Did we get what that announces? Unfortunately NO.
It seem than that book is not enough different or even not a complement to be read before, at the same time or after the first Warren J. Smith book ¡°Modern Optical Engineering¡±.
I was quite interested by the last chapter: Getting the Most: Out of ¡®Stock¡¯ Lenses. But I did not find a little number of graph advice or what ever extra stuff than present in the first Smith¡¯s book.
Without comparing page per page PRACTICAL OPTICAL SYSTEM LAYOUT is a sort of ¡°Modern Optical Engineering¡± without substance. I sincerely don¡¯t see what sorts of professional who have advantage to read that. Maybe some college Biology teacher? But I don¡¯t think so.
PRACTICAL OPTICAL SYSTEM LAYOUT seem to be half the way between a equation book like Schaum¡¯s and what ever you find at the beginning of any optic manufacturer catalogue (like Linos, Mellesgriot and Edmund who you get free by post or by the net).
Let¡¯s proof what I said with some example. First of all: if find a mistake at page 168 for the shape factor (k=c1/c1-c1) obviously without sense (but that proof nothing). Second like during all my science education in Smith¡¯s throw away lot of difficult concept without giving you some order what is the most important, what that concept mean! What is MTF, what is Coma, why we can¡¯t use first order optic to design what ever you want. Such simple question need a lot of word, lot of phrase, a lot of paragraph, a lot of example, a lot of graph and a lot of pages.
In conclusion, this ouvrage is for me a big deception. And author fail to teach you the ¡°first cut¡± of optical design.

Too old and too basic.......2004-06-09
This book would have be good as a 101 primer in the early 90s but now the images are too outdated to be useful. I ended up returning the book and buying a new book called "Bringing Graphic Design In House" which has twice the informatiuon, offers basic design tips as well as technical tips about getting jobs printed etc., and has templates for every kind of business document (letterhead, brochure, websites etc.) It's a much better deal.
Making a Good Layout (Graphic Design Basics) by Lori Siebert.......2002-05-07
I am very satisfied with this transaction. The seller shipped the book on May 1 (as promised). I received it on May 6. It is in very good condition (as stated).
Basically Good.......2000-05-17
Although this book is basic and concise, it is very well organized and visually appealing. The principles and elements which are discussed in the book are applied to its design and content. The information is sound, but it simply introduces the topics without much elaboration. It covers the design elements and principles, layout, logos, brochures, etc., and has quality examples to illustrate key concepts. This book provides a good introduction to the subject of graphic design.
Basic Indeed.......1998-04-19
There's no effort to hide the fact that this book is basic, but perhaps it's too basic. The authors scurry through the full set of design principles, but often move too fast and touch too superficially to allow for real learning. Deeper analysis of the basics, substituting thoughtful examples and exercises for the many one-liners, would make this more helpful. On the other hand, it's probably useful for the part-time desktop publisher who needs to browse three "sample brochures" before four p.m. and couldn't care less about theory.
