Book Description

The CMOS technology area has quickly grown, calling for a new text--and here it is, covering the analysis and design of CMOS integrated circuits that practicing engineers need to master to succeed. Filled with many examples and chapter-ending problems, the book not only describes the thought process behind each circuit topology, but also considers the rationale behind each modification. The analysis and design techniques focus on CMOS circuits but also apply to other IC technologies.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Every designer in my company has this book.......2007-09-17

This is by far the best book for analog designer. The only thing I wish to see is to include some simulation examples such as: AC analysis, noise analysis...

Also, as the technology moves to sub-micron, long channel approximation is no longer accurate. I wonder if author can comment on how to size the transistors for fewer spice iterations.

Maybe we will see them in the 2nd edition.

5 out of 5 stars Grown appreciation.......2007-06-02

The more my knowledge grew, the more I have appreciated returning to this book as a reference compared to any of the others. Razavi's explanations are lucid and directly to the point allowing me to quickly recall/re-understand concepts that I either once grasped and forgot or never really understood in the first place.

3 out of 5 stars It is OK. There could be better ones.......2006-11-12

I have used this book in a graduate class. It is good and very rigorous. It has good amount of examples and plenty of end of chapter problems. It is a good treatment of the subject. However, it might be hard as introductory.

2 out of 5 stars Disappoiting.......2006-03-07

The book is too theory-oriented; not suitable for engineers. I felt disappointed.

And the chapters on PLL and switched-cap. are too common-sense! No use at all for practising engineers...I don't want to recommend this book -

5 out of 5 stars Great book........2006-01-29

Difficult Side
Read Sedra/Smith book before trying this one. It is really hard to follow. It's hard to differentiate between small and large signal analysis, since author uses the same notation for both. Watch out!

Good Side:
Book is on CMOS analog ICs, so it's specific.
Book is very thorough. Behzad Razavi explains the function of each resistor in a circuit. Book teaches on a high level. Author put in much effort.

Book Description

Liquid markets generate hundreds or thousands of ticks (the minimum change in price a security can have, either up or down) every business day. Data vendors such as Reuters transmit more than 275,000 prices per day for foreign exchange spot rates alone. Thus, high-frequency data can be a fundamental object of study, as traders make decisions by observing high-frequency or tick-by-tick data. Yet most studies published in financial literature deal with low frequency, regularly spaced data. For a variety of reasons, high-frequency data are becoming a way for understanding market microstructure. This book discusses the best mathematical models and tools for dealing with such vast amounts of data.
This book provides a framework for the analysis, modeling, and inference of high frequency financial time series. With particular emphasis on foreign exchange markets, as well as currency, interest rate, and bond futures markets, this unified view of high frequency time series methods investigates the price formation process and concludes by reviewing techniques for constructing systematic trading models for financial assets.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars modelling financial instruments.......2007-03-08

The book gives an indepth statistical modelling of important financial events, that have time dependency. It is suitable for the financial analyst who wants a semi-empirical approach.

For some quantities, like foreign exchange data, there is a comparison between fully empirical results and various theoretical models. What is investigated are such behaviours like scaling laws, for the absolute returns as a function of frequency. Here, it has been empirically observed that scalings do exist for FX rates.

Whenever possible, the book gives rigorous results, often encapsulated in theorems relating to distributions of independently distributed random variables. The reader should have a background in statistics, with the equivalent of several years of undergraduate courses.

5 out of 5 stars good analysis on data error........2007-01-16

Many type of error the book list are frequently occur in FX data.
This book give good guide on how to filter them.

3 out of 5 stars From the experts in the field.......2002-06-06

Michel Dacorogna and the team at the former Olsen & Associates are well-known experts in the field of foreign exchange rate data analysis, and their book provides us with a vast, useful source of information. Unfortunately for students and other beginners, the book is written like a compilation of papers and review articles, the opposite of pedagogical, and with an awful choice of 'computerese' notation (MA(t,n)=sum(EMA(t',k)... etc) that makes Boudhaud-Potters look easy in comparison. More to the point, even their noncomputerese notation is difficult to follow. I hope for a very different second edition written pedagogically for students of this growing and important field. On the positive side, data analyses are performed using logarithmic returns, not price increments. Workers in the field who consult this text will find it helpful.

5 out of 5 stars For the new millenium...that's what we need........2001-07-23

The book covers a wide range of topics related to high-frequency data in Finance. There is a very detailed approach to tackle a huge amount of data and to deal with its based stylized facts. The book triggers the reader's desire to update his knowledge in the field of finance.

5 out of 5 stars More Than An Introduction.......2001-05-28

This one of the few books on high frequency finance is a most welcome to the literature. The book is useful not only for people who are new to the subject but also for researchers in the field since it is a most uniform treatment of many topics. From adaptive data cleaning (chapter 4) to intraday and weekly seasonality (chapter 6) and real time trading models (chapter 11), it covers a broad range of topics specific to high frequency financial time series analysis. Chapters on volatility modeling (Chapter 8), forecasting (chapter 9) and correlation and multivariate risk (chapter 10) are enlightening especially for risk exposure analysis and risk management purposes. Finally, the the extensive bibliography is a precious source for those who would like to explore certain topics in detail. I highly recommend it for practitioners as well as researchers in the field.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars This is a hastily compiled collection of lecture notes (or summaries of a Ph.D. student's thesis).......2007-03-31

The best thing about this book is its table of contents. In second place is the preface. And then it's all downhill. If you want to buy a list of topics in electronic communications, with brief summaries that explain absolutely nothing whatsover in any great (or even little) detail, and you really have no other use for your hard earned $100.00+ dollars, then please go ahead and buy this book.

If however, you value your cash, and would rather buy a book that rather than insulting your intelligence, at least attempts in good faith to teach you something, then please, don't fall for the marketing ploy of the title "RF Microelectronics". Because there's very little "RF" and even less "Microelctronics" in this text. Here's a taste of the marketing ploy from the very first line of the preface:

"The annual worldwide sales of cellular phones has exceeded $2.5B."

Do I see dollar signs in your eyes? I thought so. Don't fall for the trap. If you want to learn a thing or two about RF electronics theory as well as detailed explanations of what the job of each individual component (like a capacitor here or a resistor there) in a communication circuit is, then buy:

Modern Electronic Communication (9th Edition) by Gary M. Miller.

The Miller book's 9th edition is coming out soon. Even with 992 pages of text, it costs only $60.00.

I believe Razavi's book should never have been published because frankly, it's not a book at all. Why it's still in print (though stuck at first edition for nearly 10 years), is completely beyond any sane person's comprehension.

2 out of 5 stars Content seemed great, but not explained in detail. .......2007-03-04

When I first bought this book, I was very hopeful. The book seemed to cover a lot of relevant material, in a concise fashion. When I tried to read it however, I found it a little bit too much on the concise side. I have read very complicated books with a lot of math before, and I could follow them easier than this "easy" writing style. Almost every subject is covered in other books in more detail and better. Sometimes it's nice to have a simpler book which is an introduction, and that is what I was hoping for, but this just didn't do it for me. I donated the book to the library, as I felt I would never really get too much out of it. This didn't stop me from buying Mr. Razavi's "Design of Analog CMOS ICs" and I liked his tutorial in the IEEE Phase Lock Loop book he edited. I know he can do a better job.

This is a repeat of a previous review I did. Since then I also read Mr. Razavi's book "Design of Integrated Circuits for Optical Communications" which was also concise but very nicely explained and I learned a lot from it.

5 out of 5 stars A good book for novices.......2006-08-06

Although it is a little bit old and there are so many other books on the subject, I still think that it is one of the bests. This book gives you a good basic knowledge of wireless circuits and systems. It's a good reference to look at too. In general, all books by BR are good, he is an incredible writer. His books are always very good to start with when you don't really know anything about the subject. As you get to know the subject more and more, you will know the value of the book and will discover more practical stuff in it. I totally recommend this one and all his books.

3 out of 5 stars OK book, but buyer beware.......2004-09-23

This book covers a good deal of material in a very hot area. However, coverage is uneven with occasional mistakes. The book seems to be collected in a hurry some lecture notes. For example, the formula for the relationship between jitter and phase noise given at the beginning of the book is wrong (even units do not make sense) and is not the same for the expression given in the PLL chapter (it makes more sense).

I believe a good book on the field is yet to be written.

At last, a good RF book. Sure, it's not perfect, but it puts the others I've read to shame.

Yes, a book that doesn't consider 30MHz "really high". That's progressed beyond vacuum tubes. Hell, it even discusses them newfangled ICs. In fact, digital radio is probably given more coverage than analog! This is modern pro quality, not stuck in 1970s tinkerer's-land.

The most shocking thing is the complete omission of Smith charts. Though after reading this, learning to use these charts should be a lot easier.

Also, it's quite hilarious (or sad) when the author starts to discuss the enclosed Puff program, and the tone of the work jumps back about 20 years ("the program will work with CGA and EGA, but **VGA** is recommended because the text can be smaller", etc)!!!

A fair bit about layout and PCBs is discussed, though I would have liked even more detail. Also, some sort of summaries or decision trees would be useful for the more complex design areas like matching networks.

When I order from Amazon I expect prompt and accurate shipments.
This met those expectations.

5 out of 5 stars you will be happy to have this book.......2007-01-18

It is a great invaluable book, it is an anatomy of the wireless building blocks and should be in the library of all engineers interested in the RF field but if you are a beginner or advanced engineer this book may not fulfill your interests, this book covers a lot of topics in between these two levels. even if you are a beginner buy it for future refrence.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview of wireless design.......2006-02-17

Complete wireless design was a very useful book in developing an understanding of wireless systems, filters, matching circuits, microstrips etc...

For those who have a sound knowledge in Electronic engineering and wish to develop their knowledge in RF design, this is a great book to start with. If you have already studied RF or have a modest knowledge within this field then this probably isn't the book for you (could be used as a reference).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on Wireless Design.......2004-05-10

Circuits and Wireless Communication designers and Enthusiasts....ENJOY!

A true one-of-a-kind guide to wireless "design". It guides you through the design process step-by-step. The author presents design procedure for every circuit that make up a complete wireless system. He also provides design hints, tips and tricks. Primarily for Electrical Engineers and circuit and electronics enthusiasts, this book is a must for its primary audience. There's so much valuable information and experience in this book you won't find anywhere else.

The book is not intended for people with no electronics or circuit design background. People without such background will find the book difficult to follow and comprehend. Communication designers and engineers, however, will be extremely delighted with this book.
I'm greatly thankful for the author for his excellent book.

4 out of 5 stars Needs an update... but still a must for every RFID professional.......2006-05-19

Book provides a solid foundation for RFID physics and the fundamental concepts. It gets really boring at times because of its staright forward approach and technical jargon. There is no other book in the market that capture RFID in such a depth; however the book is requires a immediate update to incorporate EPCglobal standards and other recent developments in the RFID industry.

4 out of 5 stars RFID (RF Coupling in the Near field).......2005-04-07

RFID is a well written book. It covers hardware, regulations,
and RFID applications.
What I like about RFID is that it explains rF devices
in the near -field. Almost every other book I have read is about RF far-field.
The knowledge is useful in understanding the sources of noise in lab equipment caused by high frequency induction fields.
(These signals go right through the usual metal enclosures.)
Its useful.

4 out of 5 stars Good collection of concepts.......2004-04-16

This book has a very good collection of most of the concepts related to RFID and is very useful especially for beginners in RFID. I gave only 4 stars as I was dissappointed not to see any examples for any or almost all the concepts explained. For what it costs, I think it makes sense to add some examples liked to some important concepts.

If you are an Engineer looking to understand the history, technical aspects, implementation, standards and details of RFID systems, this book provides an excellent introduction for you.

The chapters are well laid out and paced. The author explains the most common devices and systems available in the market, their technology and concepts quite well. Most of the RFID related standards have been covered along with relevant examples. The author covers such things as the hardware design specifications for devices, software requirements, and some basic RF concepts that are required to understand Transponder and Receiver designs.

If you need specifics about recent products however, you might want to research for other sources of information because this book does not cover vendors and products in detail. For readers without technical background, the book introduces the concepts well; but some content might not be relevant because of the [technical] nature.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have book.......2007-04-03

Many alternative health books are written haphazardly. Nenah Sylver's books are written professionally. Simply stated, her books speak to years of dedicated study and hundreds of hours of diligent research. Dr. Sylver's incredible resources have quickly become the standard reference guidebooks for sauna therapy and rife treatment. In fact, without Dr. Sylver's books, much of the information related to these topics would be unknown and unpublished to the public in the U.S. and abroad.

I highly recommend Nenah Sylver's books. They have contributed greatly to my healing journey, my writing, and my big-picture knowledge of alternative health treatment options.

If you haven't already, check out Nenah's other book: "The Holistic Handbook of Sauna Therapy."

5 out of 5 stars The most complete information.......2006-11-16

If you want to understand the various types of equipment related to Rife technology, this is the book for you. It is complete, giving a thorough explanation of each variation on the technology, how the various pieces of equipment can be used, and details about both the original and subsequent developers. The author does not provide a list of manufacturers, which would probably be outdated quickly. She does make herself available for reasonable questions if readers don't understand something in the handbook -- a real rarity in this impersonal age.

5 out of 5 stars DEFINITIVE TEXT ON RIFE.......2005-12-31

This book isn't just about Rife or Rife machines. It is extremely comprehensive. It gets into how to live a healthy life, not just how to use a Rife Machine. Neneh has done a great service to humanity with this book. I consider it to be the definitive text on Rife Technology to date.

5 out of 5 stars For all Rife advocates - a must have book!.......2005-12-12

When one becomes 'hooked' on healing frequencies and has access to the Internet, one can't help but Google all over the place searching 'bio-energetic frequencies', 'Rife frequencies', 'frequency healing', etc. Such is my dilemma (or my delight). I have found Dr. Silver's wonderful book here at Amazon.com.

Dr. Silver toiled for ten years to put together this book which I consider a tour de force and/or virtuoso (I can't imagine a fitting superlative). I think every Rife Machine user ought to own a copy of this wonderful book. Not only does she give a short Royal Rife history, but also information about how to use a Rife device, protocols, do's and don'ts, detoxing, etc....plus, she presents a 200-page Frequency Directory which is 10 times more informative than the CAFL. In other words, it's everything a Rife Machine user should (and must) know.

My wife and I love, love, love this book! We have a Rife machine and we use this book like a Bible. We are dependant on it to identify frequencies for various family maladies which we then program into our Rife machine and have had good success! I am in awe of this book. That she could so diligently and carefully research all this data and present it so scholarly, skillfully, and artfully makes her a real hero in our household.

With our Rife machine, documentation, and Dr. Silver's book, I feel omnipotent -- like there's no malady we can't tackle here at home.

Sincerely,

rsp, Los Angeles

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2005-06-26

Having read The Holistic Handbook of Sauna Therapy by the same author (there she spells her name "Nenah Sylver"), and really liking it, I thought how could I go wrong? It's a little pricey, but I figured if it's half as good as the other book, I'd get my money's worth. Well, I was totally blown away.

The author begins with a comparison of holistic healing and Western medicine. I found the distinctions important, and there was a lot I didn't know or hadn't thought of before. For instance, drinking water can influence the outcome of clinical trials. And by denying patients the right to participate in their own medical treatment, you actually make them worse. (Which is what Western medicine usually does. Two grandparents and an aunt died in hospitals. They weren't too sick when they went in but they got sicker the longer they were there.)

The chapter on Dr. Rife gets into the history and how his technology worked. I never knew about a machine that could kill microbes but was safe for people and animals. Rife cured cancer and other illnesses in the 1930's and for a couple of decades after that. Use of his machines would have continued had it not been for the interference of the medical industry. "Industry" is the operative word here, they didn't want anything to interfere with their sky-high profits.

Apparently a number of machines are made today that are similar in principle to Rife's original device, and easy for the average person to operate. We learn how in great detail in chapter 4. The technology is good for cancer, liver disease, all types of infections, even diabetes and MS. Chapter 5 alone is quite an education. In addition to frequencies for microorganisms and conditions from A to Z, Dr. Silver (Sylver) explains how the body works and how to troubleshoot symptoms. I learned a lot about medicine just from this chapter alone.

Chapter 3 deals with all types of holistic therapies. Food (she has columns on "yes" and "no" foods, and explains genetic engineering in a way that anyone can understand), nutritional supplements, oxygen, melatonin and the brain and sleep, bodywork, water, etc., all in one handy place. She also warns us how mega-corporations are trying to seize control of our food and water. Chapter 6 mentions studies on prayer and distant healing--a bit esoteric, but there's some practical advice here too on how to deal with the dying and death, and some dynamite political commentary. Clearly, this lady is on the ball.

Like in her other book, the good Dr. provides extensive footnotes and a lengthy bibliography. It's fun to open up this book and read at random, since every page is full of interesting tidbits. After reading her other book, I started saving up to buy a sauna. Now I can't decide, I'm thinking a Rife machine might be better. But in the meantime, I can certainly spring for a 100 dollar colloidal silver maker, discussed in one of the appendixes (it's cheaper than either a Rife machine or a sauna). And I just got rid of my microwave, never realized how dangerous it was.

It's sad to think that this technology has been with us for almost 80 years, and hardly anyone knows about it. But if you read The Handbook of Rife Frequency Healing, you'll be ahead of the game. Even if you can't buy a Rife machine (yet), you'll learn enough about how to keep healthy to keep you busy for the rest of your life.

A very interesting and very well written book. A great deal of examples give a good feel about useful implementations and the limitations of concepts.

4 out of 5 stars Good for principiants.......2006-11-10

The book it is very simple, to them than are beginig to wireless or microwave systems. Easy to understood and not make a deep mathematical analysis.

2 out of 5 stars Introductory Material. Little Technical Details.......2002-01-19

This book gives brief introduction to many important aspects of RF and uW engineering. There are very little mathematical derivations and technical explainations. I'd suggest buying Microwave Engineering by the same author (David Pozar) which is an excellent book on the subject

5 out of 5 stars Great RF book.......2001-01-01

This book covers a wide range of knowledge needed to get started on RF engineering field. It covers background theories in wireless technology, transmission lines, antennas, filters, amplifiers, mixers, oscillators, some modern modulation techniques, and also transceiver architecture.

Although this book does not provide in depth coverage on those topics, it still provides enough background for begineers to get started in radio design with discrete components. Many practical examples are given including low noise amplifier design and practical filter transformation (Kuroda transformation) into microstrips.

One great thing about this book is its completeness from transmitting end to receiving end, which provide readers with better overall picture on what is needed in RF design.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book for those familiar with the subject.......2007-08-30

As a 3rd year graduate student in the field, I find Prof. Lee's Design of CMOS RFIC's to be excellent follow-up text for those who have the requisite background in circuit analysis and design techniques. This book assumes the reader already has intimate familiarity with the methods of circuit analysis, so it does not spend much time on the basic stuff, like deriving the response of standard circuit topologies. The discussion in the text is instead focused towards developing an intuitive understanding of the systems described. Instead of giving a dry mathematical treatment, Prof. Lee focuses on explaining the mathematical results derived and gives usually insightful comments on their importance and where they come from. The chapter on RLC circuits particularly reflects this. The second edition is well expanded from the first edition and includes an excellent treatment of LNAs, oscillators and phase noise in particular. The complete system examples are very good for helping the reader see the "big picture" and why individual circuits are designed the way they are.
Those not already familiar with circuits will be confused by this book however, because it takes for granted that the reader has an intuition for circuits and systems. Without it the reader can't really understand and appreciate the intuitive gems that Lee offers. All in all, this book needs to be on the desk of any integrated circuit designer. It sure is for everyone in my research group!

3 out of 5 stars Not a bad book.......2007-03-04

This book is fun to read. The language is informal and at high school level. Not your typical design book, but it can be used as a bed time story :-)

3 out of 5 stars This is a "Cookbook" or "For Dummy"........2007-02-23

This book is written is in "cookbook" or "for dummy" style: easy to read, a little verbose, not mathematically rigid. I gave it 3 stars because I think it is still a good book, however, unsuitable as a textbook for first-time learners.

This book is good for professional engineers who have the background to take on the cues from the book text. The new Lee-Hajimiri phase noise theory is supposed to be an important part of the book, however, I understand it better after reading it, but still do not know how to calculate a phase noise using it for a specific circuit. B. Razavi's RF Microelectronics is better in terms of this in the first few chapters, but later on he just did the same by leaping forward on details.

The best textbook for first-time learners and students, IMHO, should be written with plenty of examples and step-by-step mathematically correct solutions. It is true that the examples may be too simplied or ideal compared with real circuits, but I gain confidence and essential skills to do more detailed work later.

I learnt R. Schaumann's "Analog Filter Design (2nd ed)" this way using the companion solution manual. The solutions gave step-by-step procedures and I think I learnt more from them than reading the text. I have yet to find a good RF Circuit design book on the market.

1 out of 5 stars No circuit analysis at ALL.......2006-08-03

This book was used for an upper level graduate course at my university. Unfortunately, all of the homeworks used questions from this textbook, and we were not able to complete ANY of them using the analysis (or lack there of) covered in this text. We struggled to find answers in this book, but eventually found the answers using other textbooks or notes we gained from other professors and classes.

This goes to highlight the troubling situation in RF analysis: There is NO good textbook that covers this area, but there are many textbooks that are good in certain aspects of RF design. Lee focus's entirely too much on theory and intuition, and never enough on actual practice and calculations. At one point, to get away from actually deriving an answer (which my class has become convinced that he does not know how to do) he simply says "since this is not a book on circuit theory, we will not go into the derivations here but leave it to the reader". This kind of attitude is not acceptable when learning electronics, and the kind of "trial and error" practice promoted by his kind of teaching will not produce any real engineers without the aid of another textbook or course.

2 out of 5 stars Lee's disdain for rigor is antithetical to the competent practice of engineering.......2006-07-29

Professor Lee's disdain for rigorous analysis, explicitly stated in numerous places in this book, sets a poor example for his students and the engineering community.

On p. 72 we see the most explicit statement of this attitude: "The fussy reader will note that, strictly speaking, the integral is improper. We don't worry about such minor details; we're engineers. Thus, the integral of sine is cosine and that's that."

In this particular case, the result obtained is correct, so Dr. Lee's neglect of rigor hasn't resulted in an error. It demonstrates an attitude, however, that is inimical to the competent practice of engineering, in which rigorous mathematical analysis plays a very significant role. When rigor is discarded, the results will be correct some of the time, but they will also be incorrect some of the time.

An example where the lack of rigor I described leads to an incorrect result can be found in another of Dr. Lee's publications [1]. Here the authors observe that for a certain feedback system with two loops, one of the error signals has the form e=X/(1+H(s)), which looks a lot like the error signal for a single loop, e=X/(1+T(s)). The authors conclude that H(s) must be an "effective loop transmission" describing the stability of the two loop system, which a more rigorous analysis shows to be incorrect.

While intuition and rules of thumb are certainly useful in engineering, Dr. Lee makes a fetish of these shortcuts. His style lacks the rigor that one would expect from a engineering textbook, and then adds insult to injury by making the bizarre claim that the rigor is unnecessary.

3 out of 5 stars Better hands-on experience.......2006-02-07

You can find a lot of written stuff about RFID on the Internet for free. When you try playing with the real readers and tags and try to write your own RFID application it becomes clear that the practice is far behind the theory. A narrow (and inexpensive) shortcut for matching both is so called "PIRF" (platform independent radio frequency API). It is Java based and runs on both Windows and Linux platforms. The Lite version comes with some of TI developers Kits. There are some examples on how to use it and it works fine with a number of RFID readers (mostly TI ). Anyways, it is useful for you first clash with RFID to have it on your side.

4 out of 5 stars discusses business issues; especially concerning privacy.......2005-12-28

As Sun gropes around for a next Big Thing in technology, this book tries to suggest that RFID might be it. The text is written at a management level of discussion. You do not need to be in IT hardware or software to benefit from the book's explanations.

The authors discuss the business implications of RFID deployment. Not just in the background of a supply chain, but also at a mass consumer level. To wit, there is a careful airing of the privacy issues that might arise if RFID tags can be used for tracking people and their purchases. And different countries have different policies towards these issues.

The conclusion is broadly positive for an eventual ubiquitous deployment. Prudently, the authors desist from suggesting when that might be.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2005-07-30

The information presented in this book is very basic and entry level for those who have not a clue about RFID. All information are available almost every where on the internet, they just gathered them in a book form. The book explains stuff that every body knows when implementing a technical project, like selecting vendors, implementing projects, etc.

Recomended only for those who have never implemented a technical project (not even RFID).

5 out of 5 stars RFID Field Guide .......2005-06-09

This is an excellent book for a company evaluating Radio Frequency Identification. It is a great reference for both a project manager or a person in the trenches, who is doing the implementation. Its focus is evenly balanced between the business issues and the technical issues.

The authors provide an overview of RFID, including historical context to set the stage. They follow through with key concepts about RFID and as well as EPC standards and dedicate most of the book towards implementation related issues, including project management and cost-benefit analysis. Each chapter begins with a set of questions which I found quite useful. The authors successfully tie the lessons learned from other deployments and the historical technology adoption trends into the book to make some interesting predictions about RFID as well as provide a road-map for the practitoners. The variety of examples sprinkled through out the book as well as the detailed case studies in the back of the book drive home the points.

This is a must-read for anyone thinking of evaluating or deploying RFID. The corresponding web-site (www.rfidfieldguide.com) offers a comprehensive list of RFID vendors as well as informatin on the basic and advanced RFID classes offered by the authors.

5 out of 5 stars RFID Field Guide by Bhuptani & Moradpour.......2005-06-07

RFID Field Guide provides a focused analysis and resources for those who seek to capitalize on RFID-derived business opportunities. It is not an RFID primer nor a theoretical treatise as much as a guide for those who must act today on RFID. Of the 3 sections (I: What is; II: How to Deploy; III: Path Ahead), this book is focused on the latter two issues. Having worked with both authors, I can hear their Java & Jini market development experience throughout this book. These are not techies who are fascinated by technology. Rather, Moradpour and Bhuptani believe that RFID will benefit the business processes of some companies more than others. This book stems from their significant experience with platforms, technology innovation cycles and managing ecosystems. In this respect, I found the book unique from other books answering the "big" RFID questions.

Two criticisms of the book include the surprisingly non-quantitative nature of Chapter 7: Cost-Benefit Analysis. I expected the financial analysis behind some RFID deployments or even some good projections on the Wal-Mart mandate (although the case studies in the appendix are good). And, second, the authors frequently plug a URL for more information (www.rfidfieldguide.com). I found the site disappointingly bare of updated data or even links to other good sources. Perhaps they will add to this site in the near future.

As for this coming from a Sun-Prentice Hall Press, the analysis has almost nothing to do with Sun's technology. That said, at Sun we often say that RFID will fill more databases and storage than any human-keyed application (think Web URL strings and navigation data for everything connected to the Net).

In sum, Bhuptani and Moradpour have provided a seasoned structural analysis that can be used to drive real-world RFID deployments as well as challenge practitioners to envision and prepare for an "RFID-enabled world."
