Book Description

Introduction to Counseling provides an overview of counseling and the helping professions from the perspective of art and science. The second edition has been reorganized into three sections: An overview of counseling and the counseling process; developing a personal approach to counseling from a multicultural perspective; and special approaches and settings. The book stays true to its original focus by using the concept of art and science as a unifying theme. The new edition also revisits the topics of multicultural counseling and diversity issues such as gender, culture, and sexual orientation in each chapter, communicating how multiculturalism can be integrated into all aspects of counseling rather than being viewed as a separate entity. For anyone interested in counseling and related issues.

Book Description

This new textbook is based on a successful 15-year approach to teaching aircraft flight mechanics at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Intended for junior-level students presented with the material for the first time, the book clearly explains all the concepts and derivations of equations for aircraft flight mechanics. The material progresses through aircraft performance, static stability, aircraft dynamic stability, and feedback control. The chapters present real world applications and contain problems.

Each year the Academy's students are placed with industry, NASA, and Air Force labs and test organizations during the summer immediately following their junior year. The hosts are asked to provide feedback on how well the students are prepared in the fields of flight mechanics and aerodynamics. Each year, the student reviews are outstanding, illustrating the excellent quality of the authors' approach.

    Book Description

In recognition of the tremendous variation across children and language, the fifth edition of this readable book devotes much more space to individual developmental differences and cultural differences. Discussion of other cultures has been included wherever possible. In addition, the sections on bidialectalism and bilingualism have been expanded to reflect more accurately the realities of everyday life in the United States. Developed within a chronological framework, every aspect of syntax, morphology, semantics, phonology, and pragmatics is examined. For anyone interested in language development.

This book gives comprehensive detail on how language is normally developed. Its very easy to understand

3 out of 5 stars Good info, hard read.......2007-01-04

This book is chock-full of vital information on the subject. The issue is that it is not an easy read. The words are small and it seems as if the info just goes on and on and on with no page breaks or chapter reviews often. But because of the good content, I've decided to keep the book instead of selling it back.

4 out of 5 stars Too much information.......1999-07-22

This book is packed with an incredible amount of information on language development making it a good resource. However, this incredible detail is confusing for students taking their first course in language development.

    Book Description

This accessible introduction to the structure of English, general theories in linguistics, and important issues in sociolinguistics, is the first text written specifically for English and Education majors. This engaging introductory language/linguistics textbook provides more extensive coverage of issues of particular interest to English majors and future English instructors. It invites all students to connect academic linguistics to the everyday use of the English language around them. The book’s approach taps students’ natural curiosity about the English language. Through exercises and discussion questions about ongoing changes in English, How English Works asks students to become active participants in the construction of linguistic knowledge.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to English linguistics for undergraduates.......2007-03-05

This book is an excellent introduction to English linguistics for undergraduates majoring in English or education in the United States. The selection of topics and the level of detail at which they are presented are just right. The writing is lively and engaging and somehow stays coherent despite the astonishing breadth of material covered.

Because the book focuses on American English, it is arguably not appropriate for linguistics majors, who need to be exposed to lots of languages, and who need more detail. Still, I'm considering adopting this book, supplemented with extra material and problem sets, for my introduction to linguistics course, because it's so much better than existing linguistics textbooks. My only complaint is the hefty price tag.

    3 out of 5 stars Answer Key.......2007-01-31

I need an answer key for this book!!! Is there anyone with help?!

5 out of 5 stars Great for future English teachers.......2006-01-24

This book is a great text for both English majors and future English teachers at the college level. Curzan and Adams explain exactly how English works, while making it fun and interesting. The text is relevant and incredibly helpful in aiding you to become not only knowledgeable, but proficient in the history of English and its everyday use. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a fantastic read about the English language.

    ASIN: 1563473429

    Book Description

With more than 4800 copies of the previous edition in use, this best-selling, comprehensive text documents the fundamental theoretical developments in astrodynamics and space navigation that led to Man's ventures into space. It includes the essential elements of celestial mechanics, spacecraft trajectories, and space navigation, as well as the history of the underlying mathematical developments.

The material presented in the text represents a 25-year evolution in course material developed by Dr. Battin. Former students who benefited from this material include three of the astronauts who walked on the moon.

The text format offers flexibility for the user. Chapters are largely independent of each other and may be read or taught in any order, offering the opportunity to organize an undergraduate or graduate course that meets the needs of students having various levels of background and preparation. Further, the book covers more subject matter than is covered in a single course of instruction, thereby motivating students to stray from the beaten path of the classroom.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars From a Student of Astrodynamics.......2003-07-05

The following comments refer to 1987 edition. Some of these comments were communicated to Professor Battin, who, very kindly, acknowledged them.

The book by Richard H. Battin, Adjunct Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, covers essential mathematical background needed to work with astrodynamical problems. Topics covered include hypergeometric functions, elliptic integrals, continued fractions, coördinate transformations as well as essentials of two-body-central-force motion.

The author's way of discussing these topics with historical introduction and personal narrative makes the book interesting to read. There are minimal typographical errors, probably, because the book was, personally, typeset by the author. However, there are a few omissions and oversights. For example, on page 172 captions are given for Fig. 4.15 and Fig. 4.16, whereas the actual figures are missing (The author has rectified this omission in the 1999 edition). In addition:

    a) On page 7, it is stated:

    (DELTA)r[VECTOR] = v[VECTOR](SUB)g x s(SUB)g/v(SUB)g

    where

    s(SUB)g = (INTEGRAL)v[VECTOR](SUB)g dt

In this equation, a scalar on the left-hand side is equated to a vector on the right-hand side. The equation should be modified as:

    s(SUB)g = MOD[(INTEGRAL)v[VECTOR](SUB)g dt]

    b) On pages 10-11 it is stated: "If you want to drive a vector to zero, it is sufficient to align the time rate of change of the vector with the vector itself." This is not true, in general, but only if time rate of change is negative.

    c) On page 13 the author tries to show that constant in the equation:

    [(DEL) x v(SUB)c]/(RHO) = constant

vanishes by the following argument. "The demonstration concludes with an argument that the fluid is converging on the target point r(SUB)T so that the density in the vicinity r(SUB)T of is becoming infinite. Hence, the constant is zero." There are 2 problems in this line of argument: (i) The statement, "Hence, the constant is zero" is true, only if the numerator is finite. B = infinity, implies A/B = 0, only if A is not equal to infinity. Otherwise, one has to apply l'Hospital rule; (ii) even if the constant is supposed to be zero, this does not imply that the curl is everywhere zero. A/B = 0, where B = infinity does not imply that A = 0. In fact, a could have any finite value.

    d) On page 109 equation of motion in a frame of reference moving with acceleration -a(SUB)1 is written as:

    m(SUB)2[a(SUB)2 - a(SUB)1] = ...

Since the frame is noninertial (accelerated) Newton's second law, F = ma, is not applicable in his frame.

    e) On page 223 it is stated: "When we compare Eqns. (5.57) and (5.58), it is clear that we must have

    sinE = SQRT[6(E - sinE)/sinE]."

This is not the only choice for sinE, which reduces (5.58) to (5.57) in the limit E tends to 0. The word "must" is inappropriately used here.

I would recommend this book very strongly to anyone seriosly interested in learning astrodynamics.

Cataloging and Classification is also a name for the course that covers general principles of bibliography, cataloging, and indexing, that is required for students working toward degrees in Library/Information Science. Of the few texts available for the course, Lois Chan's Cataloging and Classification is the best because the author is the most widely known and respected authority in the field and the text contains complex, difficult information that is presented clearly and in an organized understandable manner, and provides exercises to reinforce the concepts.

If you find yourself needing to learn how to catalog, this is the book to teach you! Dr. Chan walks you step-by-step through the cataloging processes. This book explains the steps of AACR2R2, MARC, Dewey, and LC. Not everyone can take one of Dr. Chan's cataloging classes in person, this book is second only to that.

5 out of 5 stars Picture of what you 're doing really matters........2000-10-11

I have been using this book for almost two semester because this is one of our primary reference in our cataloging subject. Our subject includes Descriptive Cataloging and Non-book materials cataloging.

Everytime we are asked to do some cataloging, I always prefer to have read first this book before doing some cataloging exercises because this gives me clear picture of what really am I going to do. The examples are there, and the corresponding catalog entry are there sited clearly.

I can't forget when we were given a problem to catalog the compact disc that we brought in our class, I don't know what to do with that CD, and then I went to our library that time, and borrowed this book, and there I found clear explanation of what was to be done first in cataloging that type of non-book material. When I've seen the example, I just compared it with our compact disc(music CD), and I gathered every little bit of information that are needed in my catalog entry. And at last, I've done my work.

The book gives layman explanation, you can't find here straight rules, there's an explanation for every technical terms that the author used. The book covers not oonly descriptive cataloging, but also, non-book materials cataloging. The book is very down to earth, you will find yourself just as reading simple mathematics. When I read the book everytime we have an exerice I just always find myself looking for the significant information in the chief sources of information and just plugged it in my catalog entry and I'm finished as easy as that.

This book in short doesn't just set the rules in cataloging, it gives understanding how every rules in cataloging are being used. Now I'm on my third year of my Library and Information Science degree, and still I'm using this book as my primary reference because this book really gives me picture of what I am doing.

3 out of 5 stars Poor on evidence and reasoning.......2007-09-12

Not bad for an introductory text. However, short on the following: it does not present argumentation as a process. Or, at least it is not entirely clear on it. The process is lost in the details. Second, it has poor chapters on reasoning and evidence. It does not really explain what evidence is for. For example, the chapter on evidence (after a brief definition of evidence) begins with a statement that evidence can be found in the library etc. It completely misses the point of the importance of evidence. Later in the text it returns to some of the important points but treats them rather poorly.
The part on reasoning is very poor. Although a knowledgeable person could easily distinguish what is proper reasoning and what can serve as a rhetorical device, that may not be clear to a beginning college student.

    5 out of 5 stars A Quality Product.......2006-03-20

This is a great intro to argumentation, and is useful to people of all ages and degrees of experience.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction.......2007-01-15

Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) in Education has an excellent information part from different approaches and methodological part important for all educators and administrators, who wants to improve and develop policy, implement and provide critical evaluation.

"CDA in Education" edited by Rebecca Rogers contains different approaches to research based on cultural/human, political/economical and social-historical sciences.

I recommand the book for graduate students as well as for the Ph.D students in educational sciences.
