Customer Reviews:
I guess it depends on what you mean by serious.......2007-04-08
When she says serious... in the last few pages she tells you about becoming a full time artist, pros and cons kind of thing and options. She gives suggestions of places you can look into to show your work, but does not tell you how, just where to go. She does however say to go to the library to find out more or the internet. I guess most people don't know that, to me it is obvious. But hey, now you know and you didn't have to buy the book!
The artwork in the book sucks. It lacks depth and looks flat. Sure there is color, but it all seems to have the same pressure to it. Some may be better than others, buy my eyes don't want to look at it long. So, a tip that I know in becoming a serious artist is that if you actually want people to buy your work, you will want to create something that captures the attention of the viewer and keeps them there. The more they look at your work or the longer, the more likely they will buy it. The only one in there that looked pretty cool was the monopoly picture.
It's odd, she shows some basic examples of creating the illusion of 3D using tonal values from light to dark as well as discussing form, volume and space... but does not fully carry it through in her own work.
I just think if your going to learn from an artist, you would want to learn from someone who can give a good example. Why not learn it the right way the first time? There are too many other books that could do it better for ya. Check out books by Ann Kullberg, Janie Gildow, Gary Greene, Vera Curnow, or even Bernard Poulin. These artists have books for beginners and advanced, check them out and find the level best for you. They are better examples to follow. And if you want to start selling find a book strickly for that. Though Ann Kullberg, in "colored pencil portraits step-by-step has a section where she explains how she sells her portraits.
Are you kidding?.......2007-03-30
How did this artist ever get this published? The artwork in this book is so amateurish I did not even want to read what he/she had to say. I don't want my pieces to look like theirs. It looked like junior high artwork. The proportions of animals were totally incorrect, color wasn't eye catching, pieces looked like crayon drawings. This must be self published. I returned the book I didn't even care that I lost my shipping costs, I would never look at it or read it again.
Not for beginners.......2007-02-06
I think this may be a fine book for more advanced artists. There was little help for true beginners, even"serious " ones. There was much philosophy and opionion, but little practical help.
THE book on Colored Pencil........2007-01-25
If you can only have one book on colored pencil, let it be this one. I had to buy another one when my professor saw it. It is another book that I read with pen and highlighter in hand. I couldn't just read it I had to study it.
The only book you need.......2006-10-29
If you can only buy one book on the art and craft of colored pencil, buy this one! If you have a hundered books on art, I'd still say: you need this one! Bet Borgeson is well known for her intelligence, wit, humor, and her refusal to "talk down" to the reader or student. Page for page, there is more useful information in this book than in any other art book on my shelves -- and most of it is invaluable for artists working in any medium. From the basics of "getting started," to the philosophy of an artist's life, this book is jam-packed with useful and thought provoking information. Its richness and quality call to mind Richard Schmid's _Alla Prima_ or Rex vicat Cole's _ The Artistic Anatomy of Trees_, two of my other personal favorites. I love this book!
Book Description
More than 40 step-by-step sequences show how to master pastel painting and develop your own individual style. Eight projects show the whole process of picture making, from planning to completion.

Beginners start with this!.......2007-07-12
This book is incredibly helpful with demonstrations, suggestions for colors, layering options, and beautiful illustrations with various styles shown. The only thing that would have been even more helpful to this book was a little more information about paper and pastel suppliers and the difference in quality between them. I'm still giving it 5 stars though!
A Solid Introduction to Pastels.......2006-01-21
This book is full of beautiful photos of pastel drawings in different styles and using a variety of techniques. There is plenty of information on selecting pastels, properties of different hardnesses of pastels on different textured papers, blending techniques, storage and care of materials. Techniques are illustrated step by step with plenty of photos to clarify the instructions. Overall a good book for the pastel novice.
Great book for the novice Pastelist.......2000-08-12
I bought this book in order to teach me everything I needed to know to get started as a pastelist. I am very pleased with the content of this book. It offers the beginner a way of getting started, from choosing the right pastel colors to learning different pastel strokes and techniques. It also offers different styles (which I found very helpful). Other books seem to be written in a text-book format - but this book is written step-by-step, and makes you feel as if pastel is something you CAN LEARN!
An excellent book for someone who learns step-by-step.......2000-04-06
I started in pastels by just jumping in headfirst. The magazines and books that I read gave info for artists who already know basic terms and techniques. Ms. Harrison's book gave me a structured way to learn, all the way from the basics to more advanced topics, with presentation of alternative ways to experiment and develop MY interests.

Guaranteed Success.......2000-02-22
As a 1st Grade teacher, I have a wide range of reading and handwriting abilities. Keeping them all motivated can be a challenge. I have yet to meet a child, however, who will not jump at the chance to draw. I have the Draw Write Now series and am anxiously awaiting Book 7. No matter what the child's level, they can experience instant success in this program. The step-by-step directions are clear and easily understood. I find that after the writing and drawing, the students are motivated to extend their lesson with other reading and writing experiences, as well as with a variety of art projects.

A Real Educational Book - that I loved!.......2006-09-26
Hazel Harrision has created a wonderful art instruction book that delivers more than I realized it would. Drawing, watercolour, oil & acrylic and pastel - just some of the sub areas of this book. It really will teach you somethng. I thought I was kind of an artist and after going through this book I found how much I did not know. I really needed this book.
I highly recommend this book as a gift to any budding artist in your life. No matter on little or how much they know - this book will be of value. It really is one great teaching tool. It is like taking a class on art.

He succeeds in encouraging development of competence and increasing satisfaction for amateur artists using the simple materials of paper, pencil, and eraser. Concentrates on fundamentals: how to hold a pencil and compose a drawing; and creating the illusions of depth and distance.” —Kliatt.

Didn't help me much........2001-10-19
First off the author isn't much of an artist and he doesn't even try to teach you anything. It is just a bunch of the guys work with a comment for each. It says on the back of the book that it teaches you how to hold a pencil properly which it does not do. The book is pretty much all based on composition not sketching. I'm sending this one back.
I have just finished reading "The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" and I totally recomend it. It took about a week to go through. After that week I was about 5 times better than before. No joke, I was totally suprised.

Step-By-Step With British Pastel Painters.......2000-11-17
I enjoyed this book quite a bit and am somewhat sad to see it out of print now. I bought it only a while ago from Amazon when it was still in print. Perhaps it will return to print again someday.
Each chapter shows demonstrations from various UK pastel painters using different techniques and/or subject matter. One of the odd things is that many of the pastel paintings definitely LOOKED British to me. I don't know what it is but apparently a lot of Brits really like rather drab, dull colors (well, drab & dull to me anyway seeing as I'm from bright, sunny, and in the summer, blisteringly hot Dallas). Maybe it's something to do with UK weather. The landscapes in particular always look like they're painted on a cloudy, overcast day. Go figure...
One chapter demonstrates using pastel for tonal studies (the artist's subject was a landscape). Another chapter demonstrated using pastels for moving water or clouds. Still others for architectural paintings, portraits, wildlife or demonstrating how paper texture and color can change the end result of the same subject.
Practically all of the demonstrations except one are executed in a "painterly" style. That is, a loose manner that showcase the beauty of each stroke. The final demonstration showed one artist who prefers to use pastels in a very tight and highly realistic manner. One of the ways he achieves some of the sharp edges and high definition is the use of mechanical drawing aids such as clear plastic rulers and/or templates to mask out some areas.
This book is most useful to beginner or intermediate pastelists. Advanced pastelists would probably enjoy it more for the paintings shown than for any instruction it holds. The only downside I can think of is if you wanted to learn more about painting in a high definition or realistic style. In that case you'd really only find the last chapter helpful. Overall, I found it to be helpful for my own attempts at learning pastel painting and I think it could be for other beginners as well.
