5 out of 5 stars gerat book for any designer.......2007-03-22

this book is an awsome book for any designer intrested in improving their presentations, the book is very thorough and deals with a wide range of subjects....very recomended!!!!

4 out of 5 stars It's well written.......2007-03-10

It is a very handy book, but this edition is leaning more towards photoshop capabilities. The tips it gives for computer rendering are nice to know but I think it's sacrificing a bit of the hand rendering information which I would have liked to see more of.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-02-20

I am an Interior Design major and my professor recommended this book for the use of Prismacolor markers. It gives you great advice on how to render (coloring using the Prismacolor markers to show colors and shadows) and different techniques so you can get the effect you want.

3 out of 5 stars Good Reference Book.......2007-02-08

This book is a great reference book if you'd like to learn historical techniques used in rendering, such as diazo printing, as well as for basic guidance using Photoshop for rendering. However, I highly recommend using the 3rd edition along with a current Photoshop tutorial, or other rendering software for utilizing current digital techniques (all of the outdated Photoshop instructions have been removed from the 3rd edition).

5 out of 5 stars Only Book Of Its Kind.......2007-01-10

I'm thrilled that I finally have a book that tells how to digitally as well as manually color architectural and landscape drawings. It gives tips on using a scanner to get drawings or photographs into a layer of Photoshop and then how to manipulate the layers including opacity and filters. The technics for using markers and colored pencils to achieve realistic wood, rocks, leaves, water, and chrome are outstanding. Includes great tips on paper colors, and what to include or leave out of a drawing to give it visual punch. The entire 414 pages are drawings and tips specifically dedicated to the needs of architects, landscape architects, and interior designers though any graphic person would find tremendous value in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book.......2007-06-05

It's really hard to say too many things about this book. Even older editions of Color Drawing are great, but this newest one goes above and beyond the call of duty. In an age when a lot of books get re-released as new editions with few substantive changes, Color Drawing breaks the mold by updating the techniques with current technology (i.e. Photoshop). It's great to see that the author and publisher realize that pure hand-drawing and rendering is quickly becoming a thing of the past and that the practitioners of today and tomorrow need to have excellent computer skills too. This book is full of very useful tips for combining Photoshop with hand drawings to create great effects. So even if you have an earlier edition, do yourself a favor and buy the new one anyway because you will learn a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Color Drawing: Design Drawing Skills and Techniques for Architects, Landscape Architects, and Interior Designers, 2nd Edition.......2007-01-06

This is an excellent resouce for the study of rendering. After detailing the elements of color and design, it describes, step-by-step, how to achieve many finishes both interior and exterior. It is both instructive and informative.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource.......2007-01-03

This is the standard for rendering in architecture and interior design as far as I am concerned. It will most definitely become a required textbook for my classes in visual presentation in the years to come. Doyle takes you step-by-step into the process of rendering with marker, color pencil, and pastels. But he doesn't just spoon feed you the recipe for each material rendering, he presents the basis for a process that allows you to render virtually any material not found in the book.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT rendering help.......2006-02-25

My rendering skills have improved HUGELY scince recieving this book. It helps with marker, colored pencils, pastels, how to treat light, etc. My renderings look amazing and it is a great reference for when I'm not sure how to treat a surface/object. I would absolutely recommend this book.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Do It!!!!!.......2007-08-17

If you are buying this book because it is required text for his talk, do youself a BIG service and get your refund immediately. He promises to deliver how to teach you graphics in 7 or 12 days, depending on the location, and he will not deliver. He takes your money, teaches, perhaps what equates to two days of real teaching and continously tells you how privileged you are to learn these things from him. The remaining time is spent on his non-stop blathering about non-related ideas like his philosophy, websites (like myspace), etc., etc. He wastes your valuable time and your hard earned money. Be forewarned!

5 out of 5 stars rendering techniques are easy to understand.......2007-01-17

it is avery fantastic book im very happy to have it its educational and a very paowerful reference for rendering, it is time saving and easy to apply, wonderful colour schemes, i recomend this book to all architectural renderers & architects as well

2 out of 5 stars Awful.......2006-01-11

I bought this book and disliked it so much that it was the one and only book I have ever returned to Amazon. It was terribly dated which would have been acceptable if the content was there but it wasn't. Save some money AND get what you're looking for in Color Drawing: Design Drawing Skills and Techniques for Architects, Landscape Architects, and Interior Designers by Michael E. Doyle. That's what I replaced it with and I love it!

2 out of 5 stars Description misleading.......2005-10-23

I just want to emphasize to someone interested in purchasing this book...there is NO verbal technique given on how to render any drawings. There is a drawing only...with a description of paper, medium, etc...but no "how to" on reproducing it. I am a professional artist and I was hoping to learn from this book how someone else might create a drawing with certian papers, paints, etc....but, there is no information of the steps taken...just the end result.

3 out of 5 stars No techniques, just references.......2005-09-21

Overall, a feeling of disappointment. The title claims techniques but there is absolutely no guidance, no comments, and no insight for the reader. This is a picture book filled with a collection of renderings with minimal captions noting materials used and acknowledgements. Flipping page after page the reader begins to recognize the styles of the recurring artists. This book may help you identify a style (although dated) to pursue but it ultimately becomes the reader's burden to try to reproduce selected rendering through trail and error.

2 out of 5 stars Gives us a bass.......2001-07-06

I believe that Douglas Dawson is a sincere teacher, but I found this book to be a litany of rules, tricks, and gew-gaws for obtaining effects -- without a governing vision. (Contrast the similarly-named "Capturing Radiant Color in Oils" by Susan Sarback, which is above all a book about seeing and reporting what you see, and in spite of its title the most helpful book I have found for my approach to pastels.) Some of Dawson's rules are in the category of "duh!" and others make no sense. His points are usually illustrated by his own work, including landscapes (quite interesting), cityscapes (often dramatically lit but oddly unmoving), and portraits (sappy, sentimentalized, and including a few real bodice-rippers). The old saw says, "give a man a fish and he eats for a day; teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime." Dawson gives us a bass, and not a very fresh one.

5 out of 5 stars Pastel beginner from Dallas digs Doug's book........2000-10-09

The book starts with Dawson explaining the difference between the handling of lines--drawing--and the handling of shapes--painting. He then explains and illustrates two pastel painting techniques: working from big to small shapes and working from shape to shape. Then he combines drawing and painting to launch into ways of being creative with color and light. The book ends dealing with backgrounds, depth, and finding new ideas.

Appropriate to an art instruction book, there is an abundance of illustrated examples, step-by-step pictorial demonstrations, and very stunning completed paintings. The book was easy to read, and Dawson's thoughts, examples, and techniques are very easy to follow.

I like this book very much. The most valuable thing I learned from reading Dawson's book was how to turn my drawings and paintings into works of art.

Containing some 300 illustrations and minimum text, this is the most complete guide and study of color rendering of interiors ever compiled. Gifted teacher Wei Dong visually instructs readers step by step in every rendering technique, and provides hundreds of examples of common elements found in residential and commercial interiors. Remarkably broad in scope, from concept sketches to fully executed presentations, Color Rendering is also exhaustive in its coverage of the materials, finishes, and objects found in interiors.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great for students!.......2007-09-07

I am a senior interior design student and this book was recommended by one of my instructors. It gives good, very basic step-by-step instructions for rendering common building materials with different mediums (watercolor, color pencil, and markers). One issue that I did find was that some of the illustrations don't exactly follow the written instructions, but because of the format, that's a pretty small issue. This is a book that I'd recommend for beginning design students, but more advanced students may find this book a little too basic.

5 out of 5 stars Color Rendering Tips.......2001-12-14

I was introduced to Wei Dong's book in an Interior Design class on Presentation Techniques. It is an excellent book for all but the most experienced Interior Renderer. It focuses on the use of color markers and comes complete with practice exercises that help build your skill and confidence. I highly recommend it!

2 out of 5 stars dissapointment.......2001-11-16

i recieved this book this book in the mail and had been eagerly awaiting its arrival. i don't know how else to express it other than i was very dissapointed. i have see Michael Doyle's fist edition of his Color Drawing and my original intent was to buy the second edition of that, but when i saw this book with its raving editorial review i decided to try this one instead. i mean who could turn down a book with a review like "the most complete guide and study of color rendering of interiors ever compiled" and "exhaustive in its coverage" i thought that this book was going to be wonderful. i think that i might have found it useful if i had never even picked up colored pencils and markers before. There was very little rendering of total interiors just objects or things that might go in an interior. If you are really looking for a complete source then i really wouldn't recomend this book, only a just starting out beginner might find it useful.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Referance Book.......2001-03-10

An excellent reference book for all designers. It gives great advise and tips for all forms of rendering both interiors and exteriors. The step by step instructions were not as informative as they could have been, but overall an excellent book for any designer.

5 out of 5 stars Halloween Fun.......2004-05-04

All of Emberley's books are wonderful. The Big Orange Drawing book specializes in things that are orange so a lot of it is Halloween themed. I loved working through these books as a child and still have some of the Halloween decorations I made from this book.

5 out of 5 stars learn to draw the easy way.......2002-12-03

This book is from a series of 4 books from Emberly are the easiest books on drawing there are, period. Anyone young or old can learn to draw some great critters and vehicles from these books. ANYONE! These are a great first step. All of his Big Color books are great, (They are a series, each named after a color). Famous for the easy way it shows you how to draw step by step, what appears to be a complex Haunted House, but it is simple when you do it his way. This book includes a number of fun ideas including robots, tiger, military ships, Halloween holiday drawings, and more. He even shows you how to make yours unique rather than a copy of his drawings. You can be the doodle hero of your classroom or office after using this book. He does it simply using very simple steps, lines, and basic shapes to start you off. My favorite in the series would be the Purple Book, because I am partial to the pirate ship instructions.

If you want to move up from here and learn the terminology of what you are doing, and really become an accomplished artist, the next step after these are the terrific books by "Jack Hamm".

If you just want to have some fun, get this book!

5 out of 5 stars ~*~ Ed Emberley is the man ~*~.......2002-09-18

I am a 21 year-old artist. I forgot all about Ed Emberley until a couple of weeks ago. Emberley was my first artistic inspiration and I developed an interest in art through the direction of his variety of juvenile instructional books. I highly recommend these books to any children who express an interest in art. His series of books are EXTREMELY simply to understand and children at any age can grasp his artistic expertise.

5 out of 5 stars HIGHLY RECOMMEND ALL OF ED EMBERLEY'S DRAWING BOOKS!.......1998-10-14

Believe it or not children's drawings end up looking much like Ed Emberley's. Line by line and shape by shape the Halloween related objects take form. Our other family favorite was Emberley's "Big Red Drawing Book". Absolutely love these books!

Book Description

Though every picture may tell a story, in this colorful caper the pictures are the story! A child's hand puts a brand-new drawing pencil to paper, sketching first a feathered head, then a sleek winged body...And suddenly the sketched bird lifts its head and flies off the page. What follows is a delightfully magical tale of art run amok as each newly drawn object becomes real, and fair game for the antics of the mischievous bird. Colorful chaos ensues as the resourceful bird takes pencil in beak and begins to reveal its own artistic talents. The beautifully detailed pictures invite children to observe carefully and tell the story themselves as the mesmerizing plot leads them to an astounding surprise ending. Along the way younger children will be introduced to the concept of color (eight are featured), older ones will discover the fascinating interplay between art and imagination, and all will be inspired to reach for their own drawing pencils.

5 out of 5 stars Illustrator's Magic. .......2006-01-11

"Magpie Magic" by April Wilson, sub-titled, "A Tale Of Colorful Mischief", Dial Books, New York, 1999.

The words in this book stop with the copyright page. Then, the entire story is told in colorful illustrations by April Wilson. The magpie, a black and white bird, first is drawn, and, with a backward glance, flies off the paper. The illustrator's hands attempt to catch the wayward bird, who soon returns to eat the luscious, red cherries that also pop up off the paper. The orange balloon is soon popped, too, but then the magpie helps the hands to draw with the yellow pencil. The story continues through the colors of the rainbow, green and then blue, and finally, to a purple (violet) cage into which the magpie is lured with more bright red cherries. A brown lock is drawn to secure the cage and the brown key is erased.

But! The magpie has seen how the gum eraser works, and uses it to escape from the cage. The bird then creates mayhem until the illustrator erases most of magpie with the white gum eraser. The magpie struggles to re-constitute itself , and does so using every color of the rainbow. A most colorful story, indeed!

5 out of 5 stars Not just a children's book.......2002-03-22

I originally bought this book to give to my then 3-year old granddaughter. Then went back the next day to buy one for myself. It has given me pleasure every time I open it.

The 36 full page drawings are beautifully done and there are so many stories to be told and embroidered about each of them.
With the book on your lap, all the drawings are approximately life size, so there is an immediacy to the stories you will "write" about the pictures. As you tell the story, it is almost as though you are also drawing the pictures yourself.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book.......1999-12-31

I purchased this book for my 3 year old daughter for Christmas. It was one of two books that we had borrowed from the local library over the course of the year that we wanted to keep. (My wife tends to borrow about a dozen or two books a week as the library is right next to the preschool.) It was wonderful to provide my daughter with the chance to tell the story herself. The drawings and story line drew her in. The editorial reviews do a good job of describing the book, so I won't. This is one of two books out of the hundreds that we have borrowed that we elected to purchase, so my high rating isn't just inflated. ("The Lion and the Little Red Bird," by Elisa Kleven was the other.)

4 out of 5 stars A delightful "wordless"story. The pictures tell it all!.......1999-09-22

A gift of a magical box of colored pencils produces some surprising situations. Your child will tell his own story from the emotions that are implied by the beautiful illustrations. You will see at the end of the story how the magpie "reinvents himself" to suit himself!
