Amazon.com's Significant Seven
Matthew Reinhart graciously agreed to answer the questions we like to ask every author: the Amazon.com Significant Seven.
Q: What book has had the most significant impact on your life?
A: Peter Spier's book Gobble, Grunt, Growl was my favorite as a child and as a young artist. The only words in the book were animal sounds, but the pictures really told the story. Mr. Spier is an amazing draftsman and while his creatures remained realistic, they all displayed such emotion and fun. He really knows how to set a scene of characters interacting without the use of a single word. All of his books share the same love of natural science, detail and whimsy. They inspired my drawings as a child and continue to now as a professional artist. I wish I could be half as good as him!
Q: You are stranded on a desert island with only one book, one CD, and one DVD--what are they?
A: The book: It would have to be a book with a lot of pictures and a lot of words! DK's Animal: The Definitive Visual Guide of The World's Wildlife could keep me occupied for a long time. The CD: That's tough, because I am constantly buying new music. I have current favorites like The Killers and Delerium, but being a long time Madonna fan, I would have to say her first self-titled album was her best. Its fun and fresh. The DVD: I would probably take one of the discs from The Simpsons: Complete Season 6. Its my favorite show on TV, and that was a brilliant season. I could watch over and over again!.
Q: What is the worst lie you've ever told?
A: Most of my lies are awful since I am such a terrible liar. My worst was back in 1st grade when my family lived in San Diego. My parents took me to the zoo every other weekend and I was a complete animal nut. So one day, I told my friend Rommel that I had a zoo in my backyard, complete with elephants, giraffes, and other wild beasts. He actually believed me! The silliest part of this lie was that I actually brought him over to see my "zoo," which did not exist. Rommell seemed unfazed when he caught my lie; children are pretty forgiving. I was one dumb kid!
Q: Describe the perfect writing environment.
A: To make pop-ups, I need lots of light, inspiration and thumping music! The studio where I make pop-ups is a simple office with large windows and filled with pop-up books in an old building in New York City. Thanks to satellite radio, we listen to all kinds of music (though I am partial to dance music). Being a child of the 80's, I also force my designers to listen to the 80's station almost everyday. We have a very casual, fun environment but are serious about the work we do. When I write, however, I need to be alone. I play quiet, soothing music in a small office at home. The office doubles as a toy room for my massive Transformers and Star Wars figure collections. When I have writer's block, I have plenty of toys to distract me!
Q: If you could write your own epitaph, what would it say?
A: "Thanks for the fun and don't touch my toys!"
Q: Who is the one person living or dead that you would like to have dinner with?
A: My grandpa George, since he died before I was born and everybody in the family loved him so much. He really wanted a grandson but missed me by a few years. I'd like to get to meet him just once.
Q: If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
A: I would like to be able to morph into any form I choose like Mystique from X-Men or Beast Boy from the Teen Titans. Kind of like a Transformer robot that can turn into anything!

Absolutely adorable.......2007-09-22
I purchased this to give to my 4 year old granddaughter for Christmas. She loves Cinderella. The book is absolutely wonderful and is full of wonderful popups on each page. Even some of the corners open up. My daughter and I were amazed at it. The only problem with it, was a small hole on the front of the fold on the book. It's not huge, so I'm not going to return it. I'm sure we will have so much fun reading the book with her.
perfect gift for a little girl!.......2007-08-04
We have given this gift a few times now and it's always a huge hit! The pop-ups are phenomenal and little girls love it!
YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A KID (OR A GIRL) TO LOVE "CINDERELLA".......2007-05-28
Being a huge "CINDERELLA" fan, my niece bought this for ME for Christmas two years ago. Smart girl! (I'm an adult male in my early '40's). Needless to say, this stunning enchanted pop-up book was, hands down, my favorite gift that Christmas. It has earned a proud, distinquished place in my "CINDERELLA" collection of books and DVDS. We take this book out on special occassions, put it on a large table, and are still in awe of its beauty, wonder, and magic.
CInderella: A pop-Up Fairy Tale.......2007-05-12
I got this as a gift for a 5 year old girl that I have babysat for that loves princesses. Not only does she love this absolutely beautiful book, her mother loves it too. I may even buy one for my adult self! The pop-up carriage is truly unbelievably engineered and gorgeous. I highly recommend it!
Fantastic.......2007-04-05
WOW. Can't believe the details in this briliant book. Everytime you look you find some other little detail that gets your imagination going.

The Bestselling Classic on Love, Loss, and Letting Go
In Necessary Losses, Judith Viorst turns her considerable talents to a serious and far-reaching subject: how we grow and change through the losses that are an inevitable and necessary part of life. She argues persuasively that through the loss of our mothers' protection, the loss of the impossible expectations we bring to relationships, the loss of our younger selves, and the loss of our loved ones through separation and death, we gain deeper perspective, true maturity, and fuller wisdom about life. She has written a book that is both life affirming and life changing.

Good for everyone.......2007-05-15
Sometimes we wonder why life is so damn tough and sad and tragic. Well, this book doesn't help to answer those questions or to make it seem any better, but it does normalize all of those feelings, and it does explore all of the normal and necessary losses people experience in their lives. My therapist recommended it to me when my not-good-for-me boyfriend broke up with me and in turn, facilitated some of my personal growth and taught me to deal with some really hard feelings. I learned that losing him was necessary to my own well-being. This book is great for everyone.
Awesome!.......2007-05-12
The title caught my attention and I am so glad I bought it. Its one of the easiest books to read about moving on from losses and helps the reader understand that these losses are indeed, necessary. I have been a therapist for 15 years and have not come across such an engaging and practical book as this one. I myself am a slow reader but got through it in record time. Just do yourself and your loved ones a favor by reading this book!
Necessary losses.......2007-03-20
Great book, but you need to take a break now & then..its heavy going and CAN bring up your "stuff" my therapist recommended it...but even she admits that you need to read it slowly..and maybe a few times. It makes a lotta sense.
Deal With Losses.......2007-02-07
I first bought this book over 20 years ago when I got divorced, and it helped me deal with that event as a loss. Frankly, I hadn't even realized that it even was a loss until I read Viorst's wonderful book. I was able also to reach back and deal with the death of my parents, the losses inherent in growing into middle age, and other things . . . even losing my first girl friend.
Since then I have given this book to numerous friends who have had to deal with losses. I hope that they put the book back into full print as it should be required reading for just about everyone.
Necessary Losses.......2007-01-10
First of all, I am a child and adult psychoanalyst and as it happens Mrs. Viorst (a free-lance writer of, among other things, childrens books) was invited by the institute who trained me in Child Psychoanalysis to be a "lay" student-- meaning not medically professional-to participate in the training which was one of the best at that time in child developmental psychoanalytic theory and practice. It was a committment by this author which spanned several years and a very extensive and intensive experience. this book was a distillation of many elements of that program as seen by this very "clear" competent writer. I have given this book to many people and bought this one to replace one of my daughter's copies. It is an indepth look at psychological developement and especially the mother-child relationship (or Object relationships) and was on the New York Times best seller list for many months. It is still very relevent and well-worth the current new and used price.
Book Description
"The more I read the Bible, the more evident it becomes that everything I have ever taught or written about effective leadership over the past 25 years, Jesus did to perfection. He is simply the greatest leadership role model of all time." Ken Blanchard
Effective leadership-whether on the job, in the community, at church or in the home-starts on the inside. Before you can hope to lead anyone else, you have to know who you are. Every leader must answer two critical questions:
Whose are you going to be? Who are you going to be? One deals with your relationship to Christ. The other with your life purpose.
With simple yet profound principles from the life of Jesus, and dozens of stories and leadership examples from his life experiences, veteran author, speaker and leadership expert Ken Blanchard, guides readers through the process of discovering how to lead like Jesus. It really could be described as the process of aligning two internal domains-the heart and the head-and two external domains, the
hands and the
habits. These four dimensions of leadership form the outline for this very practical and transformational book.

Lead Like Jesus to become a Level 5 Leader.......2007-08-02
Excellent book. One of my "a-ha!" moments was realizing that Jesus is a Level 5 Leader. In Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap... and Others Don't, Jim Collins explains that companies making the leap from good to great had Level 5 leaders in key positions, including the CEO, at the time of transition. He describes a Level 5 leader as a paradox of someone having great personal humility and professional will, having more ambition for the company/team than for themselves, and someone having an unwaivering resolve to do whatever must be done no matter how difficult.
A CEO describing herself as one with big ambition, ego, and drive asked Jim if you can learn to become a Level 5 Leader. He said that the data did not point to anything specific, so those aspiring to reach Level 5 should focus on the other discovered disciplines of becoming a good to great company.
I find Lead Like Jesus answers the question. Among other things it is a wonderful manual for becoming a Level 5 Leader.
Lead Like Jesus.......2007-07-09
This is a great guide for leaders of all forms. Definitely makes you take a closer look at the way you lead and the way you live. As I work to follow the ideas in this book, I find that I am a happier supervisor.
Lead Like Jesus by Blanchard.......2006-07-22
The author defines leadership as influence in a positive or negative direction. Given this definition, Jesus was the greatest
leader of all time. He was firmly grounded in the Rabinical
Judaism of the time. With this background, He took the fledging
Christian community on a Transformational Journey culminating in
His own crucifixion and a fantastic earthquake conincidental with
the Death and Resurrection. The author reminds us that the
ultimate leader serves the community first and not himself/herself.
Leadership comes from a variety of personal sources. i.e.
- the heart is the center of the leadership thrust
- the head formulates strategies and movement forward
- the hands relate to crafting specific actions
- the habits relate to consistency/predictability of actions
Blanchard presents the contrast between the serving leader
and the self-serving leader. The serving leader actively
engages in acts on behalf of the community while the self-serving
leader benefits himself mainly. In providing service, the serving
leader implements specific plans to move the community forward.
This was done very skillfully by Christ in His own time.
Excellent.......2006-06-29
If you want to get a clear prespective on how to relate and treat others and desire personal growth this is the book.
Uses spiritual lessons to seek integrity and commitment in a leadership role.......2006-05-23
If author Ken Blanchard's name rings a bell, it's because he authored the famous ONE MINUTE MANAGER, which became a big hit in business circles and taught everyone the basics about leadership principles. He's back with a new focus, LEAD LIKE JESUS: LESSONS FROM THE GREATEST LEADERSHIP ROLE MODEL OF ALL TIME, and here uses spiritual lessons to seek integrity and commitment in a leadership role. From business to personal life, Blanchard and Hodges focus on four key areas and how they can lend to exceptional leadership, presenting another powerhouse of detail for any who would be exceptional whether at work or at home.

Cure for cancer? End to world hunger? What's left to do after the publication of Felice Newman's definitive guide to lesbian sex? Drawing on a wide range of published sources as well as her own notoriously graphic questionnaire circulated by e-mail--stunning mild-mannered office workers as it reeled across their computer screens--Newman has compiled an exhaustively thorough how-to guide for practices as exotic as play piercings and as pedestrian as oral sex. Along the way, she offers a primer in sexual politics and lesbian manners at the turn of the century. The S/M hanky code is laid out once and for all. There is even a (brief, happily brief) section on celibacy.
Highlights include descriptions of sex writer Tristan Taormino's private consultation with Betty Dodson, the author of Sex for One described as "the mother of masturbation": "I was so excited about this adventure that I nearly peed in my pants," recalled Taormino, "I was going to touch myself for Dr. Betty Dodson!" (In the end, Newman reports, "Tristan earned an A+ in pelvic thrusting, but got a big 'needs improvement' in the breathing department.") Although it sometimes skimps on the details, especially with regard to women's health, The Whole Lesbian Sex Book is so rich, inclusive, and authoritative that it invites challenge. Now inventive lovers can ask each other: "Is it in Whole Lesbian?" --Regina Marler
Book Description
The Whole Lesbian Sex Book was the first-ever sex guide to offer information and encouragement for all women who desire women — lesbian, bisexual, butch, femme, androgynous, and transgender. First published in 1999, it has been lauded for its thoroughness, enthusiastic tone, and creative, nonjudgmental approach to lesbian sex in all its rich variety. Now, five years later, sex educator Felice Newman has completely updated this classic guide. There is new information throughout, up-to-date research, fresh quotes from women who share their personal experiences, a greatly expanded resource guide, new illustrations, and an entire new chapter on sex and partnership.

Womanly Pleasure.......2007-05-10
If you want to be more open with your partner about sex, this book will help. Men will also find plenty here to help them pleasure a woman.
The Whole Lesbian Sex Book: A Passionate Guide for All of Us.......2007-03-10
This was an excellent book. It was well researched, factual, more so than my anatomy class for nursing school. The book discusses all aspects of sexual pleasure with an open accepting point of view. This would be an excellent read for anyone wanting to achieve more pleasure and openness discussing sex with their partner.
Book for both.......2007-02-21
I enjoyed this book, it was both interesting and enlightening. I shared this with my partner and it helped us both with giving us more of an understanding into certain aspects in our life. Good book, not only for women but for men as well to get a bit more of an understanding of women and where there coming from..
This book was featured on "The L Word" on Feb. 4th!.......2007-02-06
There's a reason why Cybil Shepard's character, newly out as a lesbian, is so excited about this book. It's comprehensive, clearly written, and literally contains everything you need or want to know, but may not even have known enough to ask about lesbian sex. Wish this had been available when I came out years ago. Disclaimer: The author, Felice Newman, is known to me -- as a somatic coach and sex educator, who saved our 20 plus yr relationship from LBD (lesbian bed death). As her clients and her readers, we can't say enough about how much she's done for lesbians everywhere and the two of us in particular.

Great wedding shower gift.......2007-06-27
I gave this as a wedding shower gift and it went over very well. Lots of questions for the couple to answer on their honeymoon and beyond.
Great Book!.......2007-02-24
My finacee and I have had this book for a couple of years now and we take it along with us on road trips. It is really great. There are questions that you never thought of asking and they provoke very important conversation....Strongly recommend to couples that want to strengthen there bond.
hmm.......2007-01-23
I liked the concept of the book, obviously that's why I bought it. But, by the time I got to the middle(I've bought this twic for two different relationships), my relationship was broken off. It was just time consuming...
Not very helpful.......2007-01-10
The book didn't really do anything for us. A lot of the questions were just weird and not particularly helpful with respect to building a relationship and getting to know your partner better. I didn't think it was worth the money.
Didn't get very far..........2006-10-28
I saw this book at the store and thought it would be a good idea for my boyfriend and I (2 years)to get to know each other better and communicate better, includung the little stuff. We only got a couple pages in before we had an argument. I plan on using white out on the questions about touchy subjects, especially in the "Before Us" section. What does that really have to do with "all about us"?
Book Description
Have you really thought about your faith? This book examines the role of reason in faith, helping you use your intellect to further God's kingdom.
Customer Reviews:
One of the First Books I Would Recommend to any Christian .......2007-08-26
J.P. Moreland lays out the biblical basis for cultivating a mind, and shows the importance of knowlege and reason in everyday life. This book(or other books like it) is important for the Christian who is skeptical about the role of reason in Christianity. This is surely a needed book for the Christian culture in America today who downplay the value of intellect in the faith.
A Great Challenge For the Modern Evangelical!!!.......2007-08-22
Dr. Moreland presents the reader a challenge to develop the reasoning faculties of the mind. Love Your God With All Your Mind is an inspirational message for intellectual and spiritual growth. It is an important work not only to be read but lived in one's daily life. The message of this book calls us to work our minds, to think, to analyze, to ponder, to wonder, to question, and to place ourselves in situations where we are stretched beyond our current mental capacities bring us. He quotes from philosophers, historians, scientists, and spiritual leaders for the sole purpose to awaken to the sluggishness of much to our current anti-intellectual trends and have us use our minds in our worship of God and in our service to others.
One of the most gripping statements Dr. Moreland's makes is when he addresses his own children, and advises them if their faith in Christianity is no longer credible for them that they should abandon it. I found this to be an intriguing statement from such a man who has given his life to cause of the Christ and the defense thereof. Yet, it also reveals the seriousness he takes this intellectual call, and shows the depth of his faith in Christ as well.
Dr. Moreland offers many methods and resources for developing one's mind. Two of the of the more compelling and practical methods of intellectual growth is challenging ourselves to read books that are little above our ability to comprehend, and to maintain relationships with those people who may often sharply and articulately disagree with our point of views. In doing so our own false and weak ideas will be done away with and refuted or the very arguments and positions we hold to will be strengthened.
His final chapter is an appeal to have the Church of Christ rise up and fulfill its calling to be the pillar and support of the truth (I Tim. 3:15). It directly speaks to the church and its responsibility to train its members to have a reasonable faith and be enabled to address the issues of society through intelligent service and with the compassion of Christ.
Worth your time, money, and effort........2007-05-30
This book is a wonderful book. I will admit that a lot of the information contained within is available in other sources, lectures of his on the Veritas forum, other books meant to be a wake up call for Christians to use their mind (A mind for God by White). So a major decision on wether to purcase this is wether or not you already feel sufficiently awake yet.
This book is directed towards your average lay person, so it's handy to give to someone to express the case for a more intellectual pursuit of God. It also has a chapter where he discusses the nature of the Soul and the Spirit which to me was the reason for buying this book.
I would like to comment to some of the negative comments about this book in reviews. First of all this book is one in a series upon the Christian life, if you felt this book left you cold and didn't cover other areas of the Christian life that's because it has the support of the other books in the series to lean on and can just focus on the one issue.
Secondly, though those arguments wouldn't necessarily work on Phd who debates those issues, most Christians don't run in those circles and don't need that level of argumentation. It's not as though that's even in the ballpark of what J.P. has to offer, if you want higher level apologetics I can't recommend Scaling the Secular City enough (believe me I've tried).
Love Your God!.......2006-10-02
Although I think the word Your should have been left out of the title, this book is all about the hows and whys of becoming a better discipline of Christ. Our "world" is filled with feel-good theology and illogical answers given by undisciplined but well-intentioned Christians.
Which leds me to believe that apologetics are of vital importance to a Christian. Yet, we are failing. We are failing to teach this in church, in our communities and in our homes. Our culture is OUT of CONTROL and we know it, how do we change it? Feel good answers are not the answer. Walking on eggshells so as not to offend those that offend us is not the answer. Logical, solid answers about the Bible, God, Jesus are the answer. We need to not only have a heart for God, but a mind first and formost.
J.P. Moreland provides a way to cultivate your mind for the glory of God; wake up and start know WHY you believe, and HOW you came to that conclusion so that you may be able to LEAD others Christ! People tend to follow others that are confident in their faith, how confident are you?
Love Your God With All Your Mind is one of the books that you should read to become a spiritually mature Christian, able to lead others responsibly to the Lord.
good product, poor packaging.......2006-08-11
I had to read the book twice. The first time my irritation kept getting in the way. Often I would agree with a statement only to be irritated by the "support". For example, the statement he makes on page 90 that our culture's "primary agenda is to be amused and entertained" is well taken. But his supporting details are in a paragraph that makes sweeping (and arguably inaccurate) statements about the origin and meaning of the words "holiday" and "vacation". Rather than being an insightful support to his statement, it seems to be gratuitous rhetoric.
After some time the dust of my irritation settled and I was able to think calmly about his main ideas. All he really wants to do is to encourage the Christian community to value intellectual excellence. I applaud his initiative in doing this. In spite of my critisicms (of which there are many) I came away from the book having learned a lot. I would sum up his message as "Think! Brother, think!". And that's just what I did!

Book Description
Yes, you can have the carbs you love and lose weight-and it's healthier for you, too! Just follow this revolutionary, satisfying eating plan from beloved fitness guru Denise Austin. If you love carbs, you've looked at the low-carb diets that are all the rage and despaired of ever finding a program that works for you. Denise knows the feeling. As an active person, Denise knew she had to keep carbs in her life-they gave her power and endurance for her demanding days. Daunted by low-carb diets, she searched for a diet that would allow her to eat carbs and not gain weight. Instead, she discovered a diet that helped her lose weight.

Low Calorie, Complex Carb, Low Glycemic Diet Book.......2006-05-23
Denise Austin's book, if you follow her plan, will help you lose weight. It comes from keeping calories very low (fewer than 1500 a day), eating complex carbs and protein, and exercising. There is nothing here that a person cannot get off the internet for free or in a fitness magazine from the grocery store. Austin has "daily dozen" exercises, which are a cross between yoga moves and calisthenics, and she says 30 minutes of walking a day is also necessary. Duh. She also points out the the Daily Dozen are really for people who are sedentary and not those who already are pretty fit. Another thing that bugged me was that she "tried" the low-carb diet for ONE day and it made her tried and cranky so she KNEW that it was bogus. Well, I'm not saying Atkins is the way to go, but when I went off sweets for a month I wanted to die either by my own hand or someone else's -- I was so miserable with headaches and mood swings that I thought I was hitting early menopause, yet no one would tell me that I should keep eating Hostess Ding Dongs if they make me feel better.
My biggest complaints about the book are the repetition (most of the book seems to be filler) and the way the author frequently refers to her "fans." It just got on my nerves, but that is a personal dislike and other readers may never even notice it.
Lots of info, not enough good recipes.......2006-03-16
Denise is great with providing a ton of useful information in this book. The recipes weren't as appealing as I thought they would be. I read the book for the first couple days that I had it, but haven't opened it since. The recipes really did nothing for me to actually attempt to make them.
If anyone eats 1300 calories..........2006-01-21
you are going to lose weight. I don't care what you eat. I was initially attracted to this book because I agree that eating "no carbs" is a gimmick and nutritionally unsound. But to claim that diabetics can eat small portions of white flour and sugar is like telling an alcoholic they can just have one glass of wine. Irresponsible!
Yes Carbs and yummy foods even my kids like eatting!!!.......2006-01-17
I borrowed this book from the library as I wasn't sure if I would like it. I like Denise Austin and use her tapes but I wasn't sure about her diet, plus I was considering the glycemic diet as well. I liked the fact that this diet is very simliar to the principles followed in the glycemic diet, except it uses the glycemic load of the food (a more updated version based on newer studies), which allows more foods I personally like and are extremely health beneficial to be eaten like watermelon, pineapple, etc. This diet doesn't leave me feeling hunger or having cravings like other diets I have been on. I have read the entire book and have been following the diet plan for 11 days and have lost 7 lbs in the first week! I like it so much I am going to buy the book something I never do, because this diet suits me so well.
I tried south beach and did lose 30 lbs while on it (which over the course of the holidays was regained), but now finding myself being a single mother of 2 children, I wanted less time consuming recipes with afforable foods that my children would like eatting too, this plan has that.
If you don't want to or can't cook all your meals Denise gives you guidelines for substitutions, eatting out, how to maintain once you reach your goal weight. She does suggest you follow her plan as written for the first 28 days but she is reasonable and even advises if there is something you don't like, have a food allergy, or is simply not to your taste substitute it with another meal from the plan you do like or with a food from the substitution list.
Denise also gives guidelines for exercising which is stressed as key for life long health, steady weight loss, and maintenance.
The only thing that would of made this book better is a shopping list for each week of the plan since she would like you to follow the plan exactly during that time. I understand way she didn't after the first 28 days you can mix and substitute rendering the lists useless, but it still would of been nice.
That said I would highly recommend this diet to anyone who loves carbs and enjoys cooking healthy tasty meals.
antiquated.......2005-10-20
I have read a few of Denise Austin's books. Frankly, I think her methods are a bit antiquated. The Glycemic Load index that she bases her entire book on is really just a reinvention of the glycemic index diet. Despite the fact that the glycemic load is an improved version of the glycemic index it simply isn't enough to base an entire book on. Frankly, books that do this better are the LA SHAPE DIET or WINNING BY LOSING. All in all, I think Denise is outdated and derivative. Wouldn't waste money on this one.

beautiful book.......2007-01-10
Wonderful story and a pleasure to read over and over. Makes me teary every time, very touching. Rhythm of the story seems to help my son go to sleep.
Heart-warming Story.......2006-11-29
This book is a great family read. It covers three generations on a family farm. This illustrations are awesome. Patricia MacLachlan has written a great book for young children along similar lines as her Sarah, Plain and Tall series. I would recommend this book to anyone.
Definitely In the Top 5 of All Children's Books.......2006-08-24
Almost everyone else has said it already--this is as good a book as you can read to your kids. Not, contrary to what an isolated review suggested, stilted at all. Just beautifully evocative of a family living complete and joyful lives, with their ties to the land still unbroken.
Touching, beautiful, full of love.......2006-06-05
I love this book! I bought this book for my son (then 3) when I was expecting my daughter. Admittedly, this is MY favorite book. My son would much rather read something silly than poignant. But this book is GORGEOUS! The illustrations are achingly beautiful. The love in this multigenerational family leaps off the page. There is a home birth, love of the land/ nature/ farming, and sibling love. The boy in the story is taught by his mother, father, grandfather and grandmother about "all the places to love." The story closes with him teaching these things to his new sister. Every once in a while, my son asks me to choose the books I like best for our reading and I always choose this one. Don't get me wrong, he likes it too (he's now 5) he just doesn't usually choose it. You won't regret buying this book!
Passing on the things we love.......2006-04-17
I am not only a Book junkie, I am a grandma who wants to pass on the Passion. I fell in love with this book not only because I grew up in rural Michigan, on a dairy farm, with my grandparents up the road. But because this book captures the love and family bond that I want to pass to my grandchildren. Mike Wimmer did an exceptional job of bringing this lovely story to life. I Dare you to read this out loud to any child you love .. and not shed a tear!

A Good Defense.......2007-08-19
Recommended reading for guys who don't want to be manipulated by this sort of behavior.
Glad I read this book.......2007-03-21
Glad I read this. I think most men know that most women do this stuff unconsciously. The authors seem to brand all men the same suggesting that these manouvers are guaranteed to work, while not taking into account the men out there who have high standards and high character. Men have a lot more power in attracting women... (hot chick with ugly guy, but never the opposite). Women have looks, hence the need to use this book.
Reading Material.......2007-02-20
This is a book for those of you who don't remember the rules or just want one book for everything. I love it and even bought some for friends of mine and they also love the book.
I am a feminist and I love this book.......2007-02-08
I am a feminist and I love this book. I have read it several times and flipped through it about 100 times. To me this book is more about SELF RESPECT than anything else. Living your life, keeping active, doing good work, helping a cause, etc. are things this book actually encourages. The book puts men in the proper persepctive: they are wonderful additions to our lives, NOT OUR REASON FOR LIVING!
Every woman that I have talked to about this book ends up agreeing with most of it. I too was skeptical about it...until I read it. It's the things your Mother told you...that you didn't want to hear at the time. And after going through one failed "relationship" after another finally decided that maybe Mom was right. Since reading this book I have had no problem securing the kind of relationship that is healthy for me. And for my male friend.
Men that are critical about the book are basically angry that it teaches women self respect and puts a roadblock in their way of getting a woman in bed as fast as possible. I have talked about this book with my male friends and they too agreed with alot of it, and the only one that disagreed has the reputation of being a "playa" amoungst my circle of friends. That alone speaks volumes.
The book is one of the most important books written about dating in the last 10 years and imo is still very relevant. And until the day that MEN decide to change and liberate themselves, it will remain so.
Be very careful what you wish for- you just might get it!!.......2007-01-22
I was torn as to what rating to give this book. I finally decided on giving it a 5 because I asked myself this question: Does this book deliver on it's promises. After over a decade of experiences in both using and NOT using the RULES, the answer is unfortunately or fortunately (depending on your attitude on the subject) a resounding YES!!! Hence I gave it 5 stars. HOWEVER BE FORWARNED-
Over a decade of doing the RULES (and sometimes not) has taught me that the techniques work too well in that you will attract men who don't deserve your attention AS WELL AS men who do. You see, the RULES works because it feeds on the male ego's attraction to competition and "winning". So yes- you will attract more men and get more attention, but this will not only include attention from the great guy who finds you interesting and intriging, it also includes the shmuck who's always up for a challenge and due to a hurt ego or repressed self esteem issues, needs to prove to himself that he can succeed at getting someone who's somewhat unnattainable. The difference is that when the great guy "catches" you he knows he's lucky to have caught you and wants to keep you all to himself. When the shmuck thinks he has caught you however, he feels he has proven to himself that he's cool and therefore no longer needs you. He didn't want you... He wanted what you represented. The winning trophy. Meanwhile all the other girls who were pining for him overtly, but he wouldn't pay any attention to them because after all - they definitely wanted him- end up being saved the trouble of knowing him in the first place. This happened to me a couple of times using the Rules. It actually ended up ok, because once I figured out what they were doing I began using the rules to manipulate them into giving me lots of money. You'd be AMAZED how easily it works just using what this book teaches you. A guy will do ANYTHING to prove to himself he's still got IT!! Even give you everything he has!! Since they didn't have a problem manipulating me into wasting my precious time I had NO problem manipulating them while dating other guys. But that's just me. Is that what YOU want? Probably not. And the truth is that while my anger made me feel justified at the time, I really am not proud of it now. What's interesting is that the techniques in the book are wonderful gifts to the nice guys but end up only mere manipulation devices when used w/ the wrong guys. Only those with plenty of RULES experience would really understand what I mean by that, but basically when you follow the RULES the nice guy (the one you want) is attracted to an 'essance' of you that is coming through loud and clear while you live your life the way you want. Mr. Wrong is only attracted to the mere challenge and to the idea of "winning" you so he actually becomes like a puppet and you all of a sudden find yourself holding the strings while he dances for your approval in the hopes of his false trophy. The book delivers, but a book called "The List" is a good companion for it and in fact a step above it if you're looking to get married.
Why I like this book:
1. Regardless of the critisism the book recieves for being Anti-feminist, it's in reality the most pro-feminist book I've ever encountered.
2. It teaches women not to pay much attention to men. Live your life- only better than before. Take care of your body, Do well in school, Be as happy as you can be, join groups, have fun on the weekends, work for that promotion- Oh, and there are these creatures called 'men' walking around and when you do these things they're going to notice you and want to talk to you and spend time with you.. You can if you want to. If you bought this book you probably do want to, but the point is to go about your day like you don't care whether they call or not. If you do care pretend that you don't, because the truth is, you shouldn't care anyway. After all, don't you have a promotion to go after? If he doesn't call, forget about him cause you have your own thing to do anyway. Someone else will call and then you get to choose whether he's worth your time or not. That ladies, is what this book is REALLY about. Those that think otherwise are too bitter to see it in the right light. And even those that hate it and have TRIED it will tell you it works. The only question is to what cost?
In my experience, The RULES are a great guide for women who want to date. It basically tells you in more detail to give yourself everything you deserve (healthy lifestyle, rich personal and profesional life, etc..) and the men will follow. It tells you not to divulge your life story in the first few dates (good advice. He hasn't EARNED the PRIVILAGE of knowing your personal shi* at that point yet.) And to not be exclusive to any one guy until you have a ring on your finger which is a pretty Pro-feminist idea considering it's pretty much what guys have been doing for centuries...and often even WITH a ring already on their fingers. The book says, that no boyfriend is worth your all your time- only a HUSBAND is. Every other guy is roadkill in your life path just there to help you have a good time. Pretty empowering for women actually. Like I said before though, it works a little too well as the techniques will attract Mr. Right AND some MR. Wrongs that want to know they got the girl that's 'hard to get' and pad themselves on the back for "winning". It's a good buy and it'll keep you busy on Friday nights, but for those of you that are really looking to get a ring on your finger I highly recommend you check out "The List".

Regency rake Alasdair Reginald Cynster, better known as Lucifer, is determined to avoid the epidemic of marriage that has claimed the rest of his male relatives. He leaves London for the Devon countryside and a quiet visit with an elderly friend, but gets the shock of his life when he stumbles on his friend's body, is coshed on the head by an unknown assailant, and wakes to find himself being tended by the lovely Phyllida Tallent. Entranced by the beautiful lady and her quick mind, Lucifer soon finds himself conspiring with Phyllida to solve the murder even as he grows daily more involved in the lives of the residents of Colyton. For her part, Phyllida had resigned herself to choosing a suitor from the unprepossessing noblemen living in and about Colyton. The sophisticated, handsome Lucifer takes her by surprise and shakes the foundations of her world. Neither Lucifer nor the willful Phyllida had planned to fall in love, but destiny clearly intends otherwise. If the unknown murderer has his way, however, neither of the two will live to enjoy a happy ending to their tale.
Stephanie Laurens deftly combines a strong mystery plot with a breathtaking love story in this, the latest Bar Cynster story. Lucifer has the charm, character, and powerful personality that readers adore in the Cynster men, while Phyllida perfectly balances him with quick wit, courage, and a strong will of her own. All About Love is sure to be a hit with devoted fans and new readers alike.--Lois Faye Dyer

Very Enjoyable!.......2006-10-23
ALL ABOUT LOVE is a very enjoyable read! The mystery is a great bonus to the love story of Lucifer and Phyllida!
Last of the Bar Cynsters.......2006-04-04
This is the last of the Bar Cynsters series but there are still several in the Cynster series after this. This is Lucifer and Phyllida's story. When Lucifer goes to visit his mentor Horatio he finds him murdered in his own home. Bending over the body, Lucifer is knocked unconscious and taken in by local magistrate and his daughter Phyllida. We discover she was also in the house searching for a friend's missing letters when Lucifer discovers the body. We later find the murderer was also in the house and thinks Phyllida can identify him because she saw his hat. There are several near misses on her life and we realize Horatio's murderer is now after her. Lucifer makes it his mission to protect her and also realizes she is his mate. He pursues a relationship with her but it kind of takes second precedence to the investigation.
This is a pretty good book, but I think it is more of a mystery than a romance. I kind of like the fact Ms. Laurens always includes a whodunit in her romances but I think the chemistry between the hero and heroine is missing from this one. Even the whodunit kind of lacks the excitement of her previous books. All in all, this book is entertaining and of course, if you are reading the series you must read this book.
Hot Love Scenes.......2005-06-02
`All about love' by Stephanie Laurens is a terrific historical romantic mystery. The basic story is about a solving a murder and the romance of the strong-willed female (Phyllida Tallent) and the man who never wants to marry (Alasdair Cynster aka Lucifer). The romance is very heated and descriptive. This is # 6 of The Bar Cynster Series but can stand-alone. If you enjoy romance based around the historical England than you will enjoy this book. I would also recommended `A Loving Scoundrel' by Johanna Lindsey same style but better.
Not a bad ending for the Bar Cynster series.......2004-12-14
This is the 6th and final novel in the Bar Cynster series.
As typical of the previous five books, Lucifer is on the run after finding himself the only unmarried Bar Cynster. He decides to visit a friend, but ends up finding him murdered. After being struck on the head by Phyllida, he ends up in her family's care. They make a pact to try and find out who killed his friend and the romance begins. Lucifer decides that Phyllida is the wife that he wants, while Phyllida is of course not keen at first on the idea, although she's not against fooling around with him. Hey, this is Stephanie Laurens, what else can we expect?
Phyllida reminds me of Demon's wife, Felicity. They are so much alike that we see an instant rapport between them when they first meet, when Demon and Felicity come for a visit and stay to help them with the murder case. Lucifer is, of course, sexy and confident (no surprise there). One of my favorite scenes in this book is when Phyllida sneaks into the Manor and Lucifer catches her. Lucifer does this Zorro-thing with her clothes and then tells her "I've always wanted to do that". I thought it was hilarious. The other highlight of the book is Lucifer's proposal in the garden. The first time a Bar Cynster does the proper thing - priceless!
Although the spark between the two is not as electrifying as that of Devil and Honoria, they still make for a good story. Besides, I have to tell myself that nobody compares to the Duke and Duchess. Oh, and let me mention that I love how Laurens' finished the book with the gathering of the Cynster clan, with a highlight on Devil and Honoria. It's great to see their romance still sizzles! A very good ending to the Bar Cynster.
I hope there's more Cynsters coming soon!!.......2003-12-01
I just love reading books about families, especially when you know that there's another book awaiting you that has the same family in it! The Bar Cynster series is no exception, and Stephanie Laurens has created yet another great pair of lovers. Of COURSE, he has no intention of marrying, and of COURSE, she is headstrong and intelligent, and of COURSE they wind up in bed together before the wedding. It's a Cynster book, isn't it?? Nice attention to detail, fun plot, and of course, good little "naughty parts" to keep your attention ;-)
