knitting .......2007-09-30
This is a great book for knitting even if you are not a fan of Harry Potter. The book will teach you step-by-step how to knit a sweater even if you have never made one. I suggest that you buy first an easy learn to knit book because this book goes a bit beyond the basics of teaching stitches and techniques. They assume that you know most of the basics. The book captures the spirit of Harry Potter well and really imitates the clothes from the movie. A must for a Harry Potter fan!
A must-have for Potter-fans!.......2007-09-14
Lovely book with charming patterns, I want to knit them all! Written with humour, gives a good read and many new ideas for knitters of all levels.
Great Buy!.......2007-09-07
Lots of wonderful patterns. A few that don't exactly follow the books or movies, but almost all do, and they are fantastic patterns. Good instructions, detailed, easy to follow for the most part. Nice yarn substitution information, great photos. I am so very glad that I have this book!!!
Not as charmed.......2007-09-05
It's an ok book. Many of the patterns can be found ( for free ) on the internet. Can't really say much more. Kinda blah.
Very Disappointed.......2007-09-02
I thought this book would be packed full of several Harry Potter designs but sadly is isn't. I have seen much better patterns online at various websites. I could be wrong here but where are all the different scarves, hats, and sweaters at ? Again if you are thinking this book is packed full of Harry Potter knits, you will be sadly disappointed.

A must have for your library..........2007-01-08
A fantastic reference book for beginners to experts. This is one book I have not regretted purchasing as I still often refer to this book for ideas. Potters will find well presented, practical information and photos for most types of surface decoration.
Scratching the Surface............2007-01-04
This book is very useful, has clear illustrations and instructions. I am a ceramic teacher and plan to use the book and some of the decorating techniques in my classes.
A must-buy for beginners.......2006-07-12
This book serves as a very good starting guide for beginners. It is so comprehensive that almost all the techniques for surface decoration are covered. It should be unparalleled if further enriched on the glaze part.
Best Guide we've seen so far.......2006-01-31
My husband and I have been doing pottery for many years and we're always picking up books to get new ideas. This one is the best we've seen in a very long time in regard to variety, unique ideas, and information provided. We highly reccommend it for anyone from beginners to experts.
This book includes everything!.......2005-09-16
this is probably the best & most informative ceramics book i have bought (and i have bought lots!). It gives great detail on every decoration method and even includes some great yet simple glaze recipies! Definitly the book i am most happy with of all the books on ceramics i have. Sure, some of the work used for examples would not be to my taste but the method is there and can be applied to anything you design yourself. On saying that there are also some pictures of really nice pieces, but i guess it covers everyones taste. A highly recommended buy at what i consider a great price for what you get! Enjoy! your 'bible' of surface treatments!

THE best book on clay.......2007-06-07
This is the best book to start with and never part with if you are a clay artist.
Definitive reference book.......2005-10-07
Everything you ever wanted to know - and more - about clays and glazes. If you just want a quick introduction to the topic, you should skip this book. If you want a well-written, very thorough, and very clear explanation of basic ceramic principles, this is it. If you want to go even further, delving into the intricate complexities of specific clay and glaze formulations, that's all here too.
book was used for school.......2005-09-29
this book is quite informative of clays, glazes, colorants, temperatures and many little details that a ceramicists needs in order to experiment and produce different effects with various materials. this books is very helpful and easy to read..
Very good textbook for the ceramics course I'm taking.......2005-09-24
Very good book that's being used for text in my husband's ceramics class. A good book for anyone having questions about pottery, clay ans glaze
An amazing text.......2001-01-21
This is a great introduction into clay and glazes for anyone with even the slightest interest in the medium. It's easy to read and gives tremendous amounts of information. I'll be referring to this text for years to come.
Amazon.com
Revised and updated, this classic potter's volume explains everything from preparation through firing, with stops along the way for detailed coverage of working on the wheel; coiled, slab, and pinch pots; mold making; slip casting; and glazing and decorating. The comprehensive text ranges from basic (wedging and kneading, beginning wheelwork) to advanced (spray glazing, raku firing). The no-frills design of the book packs almost too much information on a page, but the instructions are clear and thorough, the photos (more than 450, all in color) are straightforward and helpful, and the stunning examples of work by contemporary potters provide additional inspiration.

Great book.......2007-03-08
Very informative with great step-by-step photos also. This book is really good at showing a wide variety of techniques and including historical information that is really interesting.
A good overivew excellent for beginners.......2006-07-14
This book is a nice addition to any beginner potter's library. It is not in depth but offers a wide variety in information that is useful and helpful. It is most definatly in my 'top 10' of pottery books.
Great for beginners!.......2005-08-21
I'm new to pottery and found this book to be informative. I also found many creative ideas that sparked my own creativity.
Pretty book, but shallow.......2005-03-21
This is a very pretty book, and it does cover a breadth of material, but it's very shallow. An entire book could be devoted to each chapter. It provides a good overview of what can be done with clay, but in the end, I have to turn to other books to get more than a cursory understanding of individual processes.
For all pot throwers.......2003-02-19
What a great book for all of us clay lovers. Not overwhelming yet offers information on about everything you need to know. I've had this book for several years and I keep getting out again and again.

Brilliant!.......2007-07-25
What could be possibly more erotic than knitted undergarments? My wife enjoyed labouring at them immensely and they kept her busy while I was at the greyhounds. The only flaw is that the stitching patterns are occassionally a little on the complex side which meant that my wife had to simplify somewhat. This left the seams rather weak, and my wife has mixed emotions about my inadvertently ripping her woolen bloomers off with my teeth (after seven solid weeks of knitting!). Still, she wasn't complaining at the time!
My chief criticism would be that the book is too one-sided, in providing nothing but underclothing ideas for women. Let's have a sequel with some sexy cross-stitch patterns for Y-fronts please!
Naughty is Nice.......2007-07-13
This book proves not all knitters are straight-laced, even if some of the other reviewers are.
I've got the Gidget bikini in progress and I'm very pleased both with the designs in the book and the way the patterns are drafted.
A must-have.......2007-05-24
This is an absolute essential for every spirited knitter's bookshelf. I've made a couple of things from it, but my reason for counting this among my must-own books isn't actually about the patterns. I love the sheer attitude it has, full of fun, unapologetic, sassy femininity. And I really enjoy the photos - the models she used are real women, in so many aspects. They're tattooed and they curve and they're imperfect, and they represent quite a spectrum (heck, she has her own mother modeling the Mrs. Robinson - one hot mama indeed!). Even if you never knit a single pattern, it's worth the price to leave it on your coffee table.
From a more technical viewpoint, the patterns are fun and well-written, and she does have some good tutorials about short rows and shaping. Sizing tends to run small-average, but most patterns are fairly easily modified for more ample bodies. Any skill level can find a project in this book. She also uses a variety of yarns from both the LYS and the mass market chains, so there's something for every budget, even if you aren't into substituting. A few unusual notions are called for (D rings, rubber balls, etc), but they're easily found.
Disgusting and stupid.......2007-04-26
This book asumes that you are a sick Sado Masoquist, the whole theme of the book is not romantic or sexy is more like "sick". It has patterns for knitting cords to tie your parther, etc. It lacks class and it is stupid. Like some else said it is extrange... it is more for weird people.
I am glad I did not buy it. I check it out at the library, looked at it in the parking lot and went right back inside to turn it in.
Great patterns.......2007-04-14
This is a great book if you're looking for something easy and eye-catching to knit.
So far, all I've had a chance to knit is the flogger and one of the lingerie patterns. They both came off without a hitch. The directions are clear, and the pictures are great. (And unlike other knitting books, I haven't come across any mistakes in the patterns.) I'm in the middle of knitting the garter belt and opera gloves in this book, and they're shaping up wonderfully.
Some of the patterns are a little silly (like the mermaid tail and the nurse hat), but most of them are lovely and sexy.
Book Description
A brilliantly written, lavishly produced volume on an important yet little- known clay artist.
Misunderstood and unappreciated during his lifetime (1857-1918), George Ohr, America's archetypal artist-potter, pushed the form of the vessel beyond mere function to the point of abstraction. Today the genius of this radical and sophisticated artist has finally been recognized. His thin-walled, paper-light pots, labeled grotesque in his day, are now seen as a tour de force of delicacy and restraint and a stunning exploration of the plasticity of clay. Ruffling, twisting, tearing, and collapsing his fragile pots, Ohr anticipated much of what we take for granted in contemporary art and ceramics.
Stunningly illustrated with 140 color images of his most important pieces, this landmark volume, winner of the George Wittenborn Award for outstanding art books from the Art Libraries Society of North America, presents the first major study of Ohr. Beautifully woven together, the text and images confirm a judgment the Mad Potter once passed on himself: "Unequaled! Unrivaled! Undisputed!" he wrote on a sign outside his shop, "Greatest Art Potter on Earth!"
Other Details: 240 illustrations,140 in full color. 10 x 12" trim size. First published in 1989.

the most amazing book of pottery I have ever seen!.......1999-11-18
this man was a a head of his time. i have never seen anythig that has come out of the 1800's that looked any thing like this. The photography is great and the biography is good , but the pottery is the best i have ever seen he had great form and great glaze you could not ask any more from a potter
The most unique and most copied potter in the world........1998-10-10
This book has marvelous images of just some of the fine works that George Ohr created. The summaries of his life are correct to some extent but it failed to provide any deatails of his offspring or how they may have carried on the innate artist abilities, this is why I only give it four stars.

THIS BOOK SHOULD HAVE A WARNING LABEL.......2007-07-26
This is the worst book ever written on North Carolina pottery, or Southern pottery generally. THIS BOOK SHOULD HAVE A WARNING LABEL! It is packed with misinformation and inaccuracies. There are some nice pictures, but otherwise it is poorly researched and poorly written. Examples: 1. On page 51, writing of J B Cole: "He was quick to switch his kilns from wood to oil and gas." Actually, Waymon Cole converted the wood kiln to kerosene in the early 1950s, about 10 years after J B Cole died, and the kiln was rebuilt for propane in the early 80s. 2. Two pages (9 and 65) feature a picture of a very nice pair of Waymon Cole floor vases, described as "circa 1940." They are clearly from the 50s or early 60s. 3. Page 65: "[C C Cole] ran a pottery production shop but was not himself a potter." Charlie Cole was a potter, but he gave up turning after he lost a finger because of a snake bite. 4. Page 68: "[Dorothy & Walter] Auman pottery was hand-signed 'Seagrove, NC' or 'Seagrove Pottery' on the bottom." While I haven't seen every piece of Seagrove Pottery, NONE of the many hundreds that I have seen were so marked. 5. Page 11, speaking of the Great Wagon Road and early settlers: "This slow stream of people rolled down the Great Wagon Road from Philadelphia, coming south to the Catawba Valley . . . ." Actually, NO! There is an illustration on the same page showing the Great Wagon Road entering North Carolina at the wrong place and from the wrong direction and running to the Yadkin River, which is accurate. That branch of the Great Wagon Road actually came from the Roanoke Valley and was also known as the Carolina Road. The western branch of the Great Philadelphia Wagon Road, called The Great Road, ran to the Holston Valley and into northeast Tennessee, but NOT to the Catawba Valley! There is a very clear and traceable relationship of early redwares beginning in eastern Pennsylvania, then moving into western Pennsylvania, then into the Shenandoah Valley, then to central NC by way of the Carolina Road and to southwestern Virginia and northeastern Tennessee by the Great Road western branch. No such relationship exists with the Catawba Valley potters, who are generally considered to have come from South Carolina, bringing with them the alkaline-glazing technique which was completely absent in Virginia, Tennessee, and central North Carolina. 6. They also have Asheville labeled as "Asheboro" in the illustration on the same page. These samples reflect a serious, fundamental lack of knowledge of the history of North Carolina pottery.
Beautiful Book on North Carolina's Historic Pottery Region.......2007-05-07
This beautiful volume documents the history of Seagrove, NC, a hotbed of notable American potters and potteries dating back to the eighteenth century. It's written in a lively and readable style, not bogged down in heavily academic jargon.
As the traditions continue into our own time, the reader is brought into the present by the stories of contempory potters. Some, such as Ben Owen III, are living heirs to many generations.
The book is lavishly illustrated by dozens of photographs of both historic and recent pottery from the area. Also included is a helpful guide to ninety craftsmen currently throwing pots in and around Seagrove, such as Jugtown Pottery, one of the South's most revered potteries.
Seagrove Potters.......2007-01-04
This is a very thorough and informative review of the pottery concentration that I first encountered over 36 years ago on site, including how long the potters and their families had been there in the Seagrove/Plank Road area. Recommend acquisition of this book (and I've bought another as a gift already) to anyone seeking good information about these potters and their excellent work.
Excellent Work!.......2006-11-20
Charlotte Brown puts together a compelling study of the pottery of the the Seagrove community. The text reads like an interesting story that frames the evolution of Seagrove pottery in appropriate historical & geographic context. For experienced or novice potters and collectors, Brown's trained eye and writing skill offer new appreciation for the art form. The photography is stunning and the quality very high! I was amazed that the book was so affordable, and you better believe a LOT of people on my Christmas list will be quite delighted this year!

Robin Hooper.......2007-05-12
I thought this book was great. Robin gave very good background history of his life in ceramics and his views on what he created on his long career.
I loved the pictures and his instruction on how to be the best in what you make. I have read the book cover to cover a few times and have still learned more after a second and problably a third look.I have tried a few of his ideas and had fun which I think ceramics is all about.
The Best.......2007-03-24
Although much of this book is a compliation of his former books, it encompasses his personal and professional history as well as his philosophy, recomendations on style, and insights about pottery, designs and life.
Every potter, and colector of pottery shoud read and own this book.
A terrific addition to any potters library.......2007-03-19
This book is great. Robin Hopper shares his unique background with the reader and the thought processes that have gone into shaping his life and career. His down to earth approach to doing the work he loves so much was a joy to read. The technical information in this book and the way he presents it with illustrations and examples is great. The experienced potter as well as the beginner will enjoy this book.
Robin Hopper's "Lifetime of Works".......2007-02-08
I am a potter. I make pots. I make a bunch of pots. I am always open for improvement, assistance, and suggestions. And I am very glad I added this book to my personal library!
Robin Hopper writes very simply about the various stages of making pottery. He profusely illustrates his techniques with photos and drawings, making the book itself a work of art. It is a pleasure to read, and an inspiration for all potters who want to learn to be better at it.
Hopper offers tips on every phase of making pots, from sketching, through preparing the clay, to making glazes. His examples are beautiful, and the descriptions are clear and concise.
If you're in one of those inevitable "slumps," I suggest Robin Hopper's "Ceramics: A Lifetime of Works, Ideas, and Techniques" to break you out of the clay doldrums and into new territory.
Pottery.......2007-01-23
I have several of Robin Hopper's books and I have enjoyed them all immensely. I am able to find any type of info I need from these books. Well laid out, good explanation and very very useful information for a home studio potter. Cheers, Cheryl

Nice Pottery Overview.......2007-09-19
This is a very nice overview of a variety of techniques and some rather complex projects. While it is well illustrated, it isn't for the beginner. I've been turning and hand-building for a couple years (spare time hobby) and there are many projects in this book that I admire but don't quite have the skill set to try to emulate.
I do come back to this book every few months, and always learn something new from it.
If you have other Warshaw pottery books, you may notice the same photos/projects appear in this volume.

The Best.......2003-10-01
This is the best book concerning a single pottery company that I have ever read. The scholarship, research and photography set this book apart from all other similar books. Not only is there an exhaustive history of Cowan and his company, but the material concerning the Cowan artists (many of whom have had outstanding careers apart form their work at Cowan) makes this an outstanding contribution to the history of the arts and crafts and early art deco movements.
