I'm a clay artist who does hand building...My teacher brought in this book to share with our
pottery class. I and the rest of the class were simply blown away by the originality and brilliance of these clay artists. We spent half the class passing the book around and saying to one anothr "how about THIS one?"
None of us wanted to put the book down and get back to working on our own pieces.

The book is quite reasonable in price and I was so captivated by these beautiful photographs that I went ahead and bought the the other two books in the series which are specific to animals and teapots...The photographs on each page are simply spectacular...memorable....something I wouldn't directly copy in my own work, but much of it is just insipirational...and informative. Description of how the piece was fired...the method for it's execution (whether hand or wheel built). These books are a collection of the most original works I've ever seen. Although I don't build animals of out clay, I'm as thrilled to own each book from this series as I am
"500 Bowls".

This book is beautifully photgraphed, like all the 500 series books, and weather you put it on your coffee table or in your studio, it lights up the imagination and inspires the artist.

It is the simplicity of the bowl on the cover that draw us in, though it is difficult, as there is no cover credit in the edition I own, to find who that artist is. Deep inside we find that bowl and another by potter/artist Judy Motzkin. Patient searching pays off. This elegant little book, with this elegant saggar fired bowl on the cover is a treasure.

I am astonished that anyone could find this book a dissapointment! Only, not,when I read the reveiws that were not too great were written by people who wanted a more functional or traditional result,perhaps...
I like it.Once again,this book opened up an area in my own artistic approach-to "think outside the Bowl"! If you are an artist,or sculptor that has been at it a good 10 or 15 years,as I am,and you need a new vien to tap,this is a great book to get.Mostly,I found it treated the surfaces,interior or exterior,like a canvas.not a vessel to be filled with cereal or mashed potatoes,but as an object,to be viewed,and give the onlooker an "eyeful" It's again,one of the best in the lark 500 books.

I have a hunger for bowls. Objects that can hold other objects, particularly food, fascinate me. This book feeds my hunger with beautiful color photos of more bowls than my brain can hold in one sitting. Bowls that make me laugh, purr, gasp with amazement, and covet. Oh how I covet. Bowls that hold other bowls that hold other bowls...
And for the frustrated potter in me, the information on glazes and firing deepens my appreciation of each and every hemispherical vessel. I'll have this one, and that one, and the little one over there...

I bought this book and looked through it with post its to label all the interesting teapot ideas I was drawn to. When considering this book, I wasn't particularly drawn to the cover teapot and wondered if I would be disappointed in the authors picks, but I wasn't. This is a great visual resource for my classroom and studio.

As someone else has commented, I would have given this book 5 stars if the author hadn't repeated multiple photos of very similar teapots by the same artist.

A beautiful book on contemporary approaches to a traditional vessel.I am not into funtion as I am into form,but what a book! I am glad I bought it.Sometimes,I found that despite my aversion to making utilitarian things,there is so much I do derive from the pictures that I can adapt the notion of form and function to a sculptural work,independent of the notion of tea pot.

But if I were a little teapot, I'd be one of the beautiful ones in this book. There are teapots both plain, and beyond description to fascinate, amuse and amaze you. If you know a little about firing ceramics, and glaze technology, the information provided will deepen your appreciation of each teapot. You may find that some of these artists are in your area, and have ceramics for sale. Or if you just like teapots, there enough teapots here in beautiful color photos to sate your appetite.

For more than 30 years, Dale Chihuly's work, principally in glass (but occasionally including such unconventional media as neon and ice), has challenged traditional distinctions between craft and art. Chihuly's oeuvre is notable for its vibrancy of color, the boldness of its shape and execution, and, in recent years, its studied mimicry of natural forms, from cacti to seaweed and jellyfish. The scale of these blown-glass works ranges from pieces suitable for a coffee table to vast hanging chandeliers that drape from ceiling to floor or shoot up like Christmas trees from below. At times, Chihuly's work is merely decorative, a collection of brightly colored, softened glass forms that resemble melted Christmas tree ornaments, sea anemones, squash, wriggling eels, and other organic shapes. The dizzying abundance of work created by Chihuly himself and his students-cum-assistants at his Pilchuk Glass School, and the enormously successful marketing of this art (Pilchuk, located near Seattle, is open to visitors), has lead some viewers to an overfamiliarity with the work. But art critics Donald Kuspit and Jack Cowart argue for its originality and importance in their introductory essays. (Perhaps overly so: Cowart compares the pieces to Matisse, Turner, and Walt Disney's Fantasia, while Kuspit evokes Freud, symbolism, and T.S. Eliot to argue for the works' seriousness of intent.) Even those readers familiar with Chihuly will be impressed with the capacious variety of form and function--candy bowls to chandeliers--captured in over 280 pages of photographs that exhaustively chart the artist's creations, along with the two essays mentioned above and a biographical time-line. This book is beautiful! I visited the botanical gardens in St. Louis and saw some of Dale Chihuly's work close up. I've never seen anything like it. What an incredible art form this is. This book brings back the same feelings I had while looking at his work in person. The pictures in this book are breathtaking. The great thing about this particular book is that it has pictures of his work located all over the world. Many of the pictures have a location listed and some of them have Mr. Chihuly's comments on the piece and how he felt about creating it. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a general book on his work. I have it on my coffee table in the family room and everyone who opens it up, can't put it down. Every turn of the page brings a "WOW" or "Incredible". Truly a `must have' book for your collection.

Hypnotizing and beautiful.......2001-12-27

I was introduced to Chihuly through a special on my local PBS station many years ago. I couldn't remember his name, but I always remembered that he was the brilliant man with the unorthodox style. His vision and his artistic talents are immense. This book is absolutely mesmerizing and gorgeous with page after page of color photos. From the "Chihuly Over Venice" project to his designs for the set of the opera "Pelléas et Mélisande" for the Seattle Opera. This book truly is a feast for the eyes and the soul. Chihuly is a master of glass and this book proves it.

From the front page to the end this book you will be mesmorized. For those familiar with Maestro Chihuly's work this is a bible, for those that just come to learn about his creations this book is a must have. I feel that Dale Chihuly is one of the most talented artists of this century. His vision and creativity are so outstanding in a world of modern art sometimes too bare and conceptual. The book is an array of picture after picture of Chihuly's work. Splendid details can inspire from a decorator to a fashion designer, every page is a microcosmo of creativity. Noted critic Donald Kuspit has written what is perhaps the best essay about the work of Seattle artist Dale Chihuly. Those familiar with the burgeoning studio glass movement may nonetheless wonder about the use of glass as a medium for art; Kuspit forcefully argues that Chihuly has pioneered a new art form that is in many ways an extension of traditional art and in some ways superior to current art styles. I found Functional Pottery to be a pleasant surprise for the most part, although I was mildly disappointed by the more practical sections of the book. Roughly the first half of the book provides an interesting historical and cultural review of functional pottery, which went beyond what I had anticipated from the title and general description. A portion of the second half of the book focused on the mechanics of particular forms of functional pottery. This portion, which was my particular interest in buying the book, was a little less thorough and extensive than I had hoped. For the beginner/intermediate potter specifically interested in practical advice and detail regarding the mechanics of functional pottery forms, the material in the book, while useful, may not go far enough. I recommend this book as a general overview, keeping in mind that the scope of the book covers a broader range of topics than implied by its title, and that only sixty pages of the book are dedicated to the practical considerations and mechanics of designing and creating functional pottery.

For potters concerned about form and function.......2000-07-04

This book is an excellent addition to my collection of pottery books. This book deals with the more technical side of pottery. This book is for people who have accomplished throwing but want to take it to the next level. The book covers everyhting from history of pottery, to correct proportions, and also has artist bio's. Excellent book, i rate it 12 out of 10.

Pitelka's "Clay:A Studio Handbook".......2005-08-26

I have read several books (library) on pottery and technique and THIS book, for all inclusive information, beats them all. One definitely that should be in everyone's studio. Easy to quick reference. Easy to read and understand. I actually could visualize making forms as I read the text. It gets right down to the molecular events that happen in the kiln, things I didn't know before. Wonderful work!! Take a class, then read this book. You'll want to play with clay the rest of your life.

Perfect studio handbook.......2002-03-15

This book is wonderful. It contains information on everything from properly wedging and centering clay, to how to set up your own studio and select equipment. It's informative without being so academic that it's hard to read. I would recommend it to anyone who is trying to supplement their knowledge of ceramics. I have more hands-on pottery experience than academic, so this answers all the little things I've been wondering about such as "What is the difference between earthenware and stoneware?", "How does a noborigama work?", or "What is the proper way to photograph my work?" This is the perfect studio reference book.

This book had a great chapter on technical information and weather proofing outdoor mosaics. Was extremely helpful in determining which products I should be using on my own water feature and protecting it. Well worth the effort and time to have it sent to Australia for this chapter alone.

Not really a how-to book.......2004-07-29

The book is mainly devoted to showing various projects made by the authors. Very nice and inspiring, as they do wonderful work, but if you are looking for in-depth instructions or practical knowledge, this is not the book. Try Encyclopedia of Mosaic Techniques by the same authors, instead.

Pretty Pictures, But Not Enough Technical Information.......2004-04-05

I purchased this book specifically for technical information on creating outdoor mosaics. I was particularly interested in recommendations for grouting, adhesives, materials, etc. The majority of the book is taken up with lovely pictures and projects, but the technical portion is given the short shift at the end of the book. I'd recommend other books if you are just starting out and are looking for good, detailed information.

Mosaic Workshop Rules.......2002-11-11

Brilliant book written by two of the most experienced mosaicists in the UK. I was so impressed, I attended a Mosaic Workshop course in London in October 2002 which was taught by Emma Biggs. I am now using this book as a reference for the techniques demonstrated on that course, and I thoroughly recommend it. It contains some very specific technical advice regarding weatherproofing. The advice is based on years of experience, so the techniques are eseential to follow to ensure longevity of the mosaic works. I was a total beginner last month, but feel competent and full of confidence with outdoor mosaic now. I certainly recommend this book for inspiration and reference for those who have done a bit of mosaic work.

ONE OF THE MORE HELPFUL BOOKS ON THIS SUBJECT OUT THERE........2007-09-15

I found this work to be most helpful. It provides step by step instructions and is great for the beginner. The book is full of designs for use with Polymer Clay and is quite detailed. The photography is great and quite clear. The text is full of helpful hints and tips as to techniques that are easy to follow. I also enjoyed the great ideas for projects I gleaned from this work. One of the strong areas of this book, unlike some others I have in my collection, is that the author does not assume that you already know something and goes ahead and explains even simple steps. The only weakness I found was that some of the information is just a bit dated as so much progress has been made in this field over the past two or three years. This is not a big problem though as there certainly is no "bad" information. This is a good one to add to your collection as it is nice to have on hand to answer questions as you are working. It is also a very handy book to have if you happen to be teaching a course in working with Polymer clays. The instructions here can be worked into a lesson plan quite nicely. Highly recommend.

Good book to teach canes and give examples.......2005-12-16

The author shows how to make canes and that is pretty much all that is in this book. Not much if you are looking for other techniques.

Im new at polymer clay and this book is just perfect.Ive loaned it out but kept track of it so no one forgets to bring it back too..I really couldnt have learned so much about canning and the craft of beads in polymer clay without this book..ITs a must add to your clay library.Mrs.C.

This book got me into making jewelry. It has everything from the very simple, to complex canework. I've taken many of the examples in this book and made them into my own design. I would definitly recomend this book for anyone, if your just starting out or you already know what your doing.

Colorful projects ranging from basic to challenging.......2000-07-21

Creative Clay Jewelry is one of the many books that attempt to cover polymer clay work from the very basics to quite advanced. While other books are probably more successful at that (Sue Heaser's Polymer Clay Techniques Book, for example), Creative Clay Jewelry has some good projects and solid information, and would be quite useful to the beginning to intermediate clayer.

It's unfortunate that there's no real indication of level of difficulty in the projects; they don't follow any logical progression. Some of the early projects use very basic techniques only - jelly rolls, marbling - which could probably be discussed in the introduction section. However, just a few projects in, there's a geometric pattern that would be quite difficult and frustrating to do as your third or fourth PC project. I'd advise careful consideration when selecting a project from this book.

Dierks does provide a much more detailed ingredient list, including things like findings and clay amounts, which other books tend to skip. She even specifies particular brands and colors, but it isn't necessary to adhere to them.

On a more personal note, I got less use out of this book than most of my PC books, simply because the projects were very bright, busy, and colorful - and that's very far from my style. But for those who love the casual, cheerful look that polymer clay can provide, this book might well be great.

Almost great but flawed.......2007-08-28

This is a book in search of an audience. It starts with some interesting text regarding the history of mosaics as well as introducing the fundamentals of creating them yourself. It then presents a series of projects completed by the author. The projects are mostly top notch and provide a window into the techniques used by this talented artist.

But that is as far as it goes. In the interest of protecting her art the author goes to great lengths to make certain that her projects are difficult to replicate. No where in this book will you find any patterns of original or classical motifs. Pictures containing these elements are intentionally distorted in order to make them impossible to replicate. In some cases (including the cover piece!) pictures of the completed artwork are actually omitted (presumably because they would be easy to copy).

I actually agree with the idea that budding mosaicists should work from their own original ideas and this book is certainly recommended with those constraints in mind, but it could have been alot more. Even some simple classical designs for reproduction would have made this work much much better. Instead the desire of the artist to preserve her "eliteness" gets in the way.

A Grand Mosaic Book.......2006-06-08

I bought this book for the historical effects. After reading during the past week, it has turned out to be one of the best mosaic books I own. The photography is breathtaking. Since buying a stack of mosaic books at an estate sale, I have always been a huge Emma Biggs follower. However, this author is amazing and shows how to use fragments of the materials to create fabulous pieces of art. I'm an instant fan and re-energized.

In my opinion, this is not a book for a beginner. I believe it is short on the necessary basics. But it is strong in displaying many step-by-step photographs to make the 16 projects from start to finish understandable for the experienced. A beginner artist should store the book away for immediate inspiration when the time is right.

Five stars for illustrations and projects; not "how-to" book.......2005-05-27

The photos are breathtaking, full of inspiration for anyone interested in any kind of craft in which pieces are assembled, whether mosaics or quilting or large-scale projects like creating brick patterns in a patio. Aside from books I have about classical art, no other source seems close to providing the rich visuals.

This is certainly not a book to instruct beginners, in my opinion. The "how-to" information is cursory. For instance, a scant half page (and I do mean "scant") describes grouting. Projects, too, are probably beyond a beginner's ability. But the projects are, admittedly, really worth doing, not the kindergarten-looking bits featured in some books. There is a bit of information on cutting: only a bit. Comments along the lines of "with experience, you'll be able to master this technique" suggest to me that this author is more comfortable showing than describing technical aspects.

But what a grand showing this book provides. Many of the color photos are large enough to lend themselves to study in detail and there are a few sequences that show projects in process. Although the book will not provide in depth, specific information and instructions to beginners, anyone interested in mosaic will profit by studying the exquisite photos. The author shows some of this art's beauty that has allowed it to speak from antiquity far into the future. Drink in the colors, patterns, and forms -- and be seduced by the possibilities.

Best Mosaic book I have.......2002-06-19

This book is beautiful. Though, I definitely do not recommend this for beginners or for someone who wants step by step instructions. This book shows her taking some inspiration from ancient mosaics and then altering them for her own use. I have also done the same E.g. the front cover shows the leaves and lizards. I do a lot of paving stones. I simply just did two of the black leaves onto a white background onto a paving stone. Very simple, but gosh it looks great.
This book is more for inspiration only rather than a teaching book for beginners. I still highly recommend it though.

Glosses over basics.......2002-02-03

I have to disagree with those reviewers who have already weighed in on this book. Perhaps they are already experienced in making mosaics. As someone who has not done mosaics before, I was hoping for a little more discussion of the basics. For example, there is a list (and even photographs of) tools to use to cut tile, but not really any discussion on how to do it. Also, the history lesson on mosaics is somewhat brief, with not very many photographs of ancient mosaics.
