Book Description
Whether a marketing campaign or a museum exhibit, a video game or a complex control system, the design we see is the culmination of many concepts and practices brought together from a variety of disciplines. Because no one can be an expert on everything, designers have always had to scramble to find the information and know-how required to make a design workuntil now.
Universal Principles of Design is the first cross-disciplinary reference of design. Richly illustrated and easy to navigate, this book pairs clear explanations of the design concepts featured with visual examples of those concepts applied in practice. From the 80/20 rule to chunking, from baby-face bias to Ockham's razor, and from self-similarity to storytelling, 100 design concepts are defined and illustrated for readers to expand their knowledge.
This landmark reference will become the standard for designers, engineers, architects, and students who seek to broaden and improve their design expertise.

full of info...dry, but usefull........2007-09-18
This reminded me of an old textbook, having very few visual examples and loads of text. That said I have found it a good read with more information than other similar design books. It is a good book to grasp the whole spread of design.
Key Priciples for Every Designer.......2007-09-11
I loved this book for its illustrations, organization & its selection of principles. It covers pivotal ideas from visual design, interaction design, industrial engineering, an communications design & cross-references each principle to related principles & sources for further exploration. It's hard to image a professional in any design field that would appreciate this uniquely valuable & enjoyable reference.
Resource Supreme.......2007-09-10
This book has great visual examples of the concepts in design. Designers, teachers and commercial art directors should have it on a shelf near by.
No big secrets in this book.......2007-07-22
This book does have some useful and interesting principals of design. However most any person who is thoughtful and careful in designing a human interface will figure these things out without this book. In fact a fair percentage of the principals discussed are painfully obvious to anyone.
One of the Best Books in my Library.......2007-07-19
This is an invaluable resource for any designer. Well-organized and easy to read, with a multitude of cross-references. One of the best values I've come across in recent years.

Visual Grammar (Design Briefs)
ASIN: 1568984480 |
Book Description
The organization of letters on a blank sheet -- or screen -- is the most basic challenge facing anyone who practices design. What type of font to use? How big? How should those letters, words, and paragraphs be aligned, spaced, ordered, shaped, and otherwise manipulated? In this groundbreaking new primer, leading design educator and historian Ellen Lupton provides clear and concise guidance for anyone learning or brushing up on their typographic skills.
Thinking with Type is divided into three sections: letter, text, and grid. Each section begins with an easy-to-grasp essay that reviews historical, technological, and theoretical concepts, and is then followed by a set of practical exercises that bring the material covered to life. Sections conclude with examples of work by leading practitioners that demonstrate creative possibilities (along with some classic no-no's to avoid).
Customer Reviews:
useless.......2007-09-08
I wouldn't recommend this book to anybody. just a fiw bits of information from every area, but nothing specific or useful.
Great value.......2007-09-05
If you're loooking for a good foundational knowledge of type, this is one of the best books for the money you'll find.
don't be deceived by the title.......2007-09-04
not quite helpful with thinking with type as the title suggests. more of a brief historical overview of type and such. does not really help you think critically about type. there are a few other books i would definitely if you're wanting for something deeper about type after reading this book. overall, for the price, it's a decent book to own. i do wish the book talked more about the grid system though.
A disorderly book, some good advice, much confusion.......2007-08-25
This book does not accomplish what it sets out to be, according to the subtitle, "A critical guide for designers, writers, editors & students". It has some interesting examples of unusual designs and has some value for designers of, for example, brochures or advertisements. But the book has limited value for the remaining targeted audience, as far too much of the book is devoted to oddities and strange designs that a writer, editor or student should NEVER even think of using.
The majority of the examples of text settings in the book are unreadable for more than a few lines. No writer who actually wants his or her work to be read should ever want to have the text set in one of these designs.
There are some useful guides on matters such as leading and tracking, but these are lost in the overall jumble. The book merits two stars only because of designers might find it useful. All others should avoid the book.
Good history, but impractical.......2007-08-09
This book is more a brief history of typography than a practical guide for the designer. The author is the scholarly type and in that mode she provides a wonderful analysis of typography's evolution as medium. On the down side, I found the overall tone of the book to be on the pretentious, high-minded side. Practical application of the principles described is not the emphasis.
Book Description
Now in its Fourth Edition, this unrivaled, seminal work continues its long tradition of providing balanced insight and thorough historical background. Under the new authorial leadership of Alston Purvis, this authoritative book offers more than 450 new images, along with expansive coverage of such topics as Italian, Russian, and Dutch design. It reveals a saga of creative innovators, breakthrough technologies, and important design innovations.

My faveorite textbook.......2007-08-01
I didn't want to sell this back to the store it was so good. It is in my library for reference when ever I need it.
Wonderful Book.......2007-03-18
This book is a great comprehensive history of graphic communication from the cave paintings till today. I'm using it as textbook for one of my classes in college and it is wonderful. It is also beautifully designed.
awesome.......2007-03-08
One of the best book I bought on the subject. Buy it. it's a great source of inspiration.
History Of Grahpics.......2007-03-08
I found that this book is well illustrated and more focused on the history of graphics rather than the technique. I purchased this as a school text book requirement but will be keeping the book for my own personal enjoyment. Book is larger than expected and dates from early cave paintins and their symbolic and graphic relevance through some of the early wood and block prints up to Warhol and current used of design and typography.

Cutting-edge concepts, a beautifully illustrated text, and a dazzling array of award-winning design make the third edition of this standout best-seller one of the most highly acclaimed design texts in the world. Customer Reviews:
Favorite Graphic Design Book.......2007-09-21
I just finished reading all but one or two chapters of this book for a class where this was the primary text. I have to say that this book goes everywhere with me and has become a favorite. Compared to the other text books I had this semester (and many others as well), this was a breath of fresh air. The writing was never dry and it never dragged. What I read really stuck with me and I looked forward to my weekly reading. Also having the exercises at the end of most of the chapters is wonderful for a student for further learning that truly is self-paced. I plan on doing most, if not all of these exercises for further practice. I am definitely going to have to look into Landa's other titles as well.
Best G.D. Book out there!.......2007-04-04
Was advised to buy from instrucor as additional class materials and found I love this book! Covers from core information to breaking down new media and cutting edge styles. Would not go without this book if you are interested in learning about graphic design as an art and a science. Great organization and use of information -good for any level designer.
Don't pay retail... GET IT ON AMAZON!
Graphics Student.......2007-02-23
I am taking a night course that required this book. Amazon.com had the best price. The book itself has many beautiful graphic illustrations and the text is fairly easy to read. It is not the total snoozer I thought it would be and has many fun projects to illustrate the points made in the text. All-in-all not a bad course book although this is not something I would have ever picked up for personal reading.
Great for Intermediate Designers.......2007-02-20
This book is a big help if you have been thrust into a job where you must come up with a great design for a poster or flyer. Gives you as many or as little steps as you think are necessary. Good reference.
Great Text For Art students.......2007-01-04
Combining great illustrations along with good information, this text truly delivers what many are lacking in. From print to web design, this book explores many facets of Design.

Graphic Guide to Interior Details: For Builders and Designers (Graphic Guide)
ASIN: 1401867154 |
Book Description
Written to meet the most recent editions of IRC and IBC, this exceptional, full-color fifth edition is designed for beginning, intermediate, and advanced architectural drafters and CAD operators alike. Architectural Drafting and Design, 5E features the basics of residential design through the various types of projects that a designer or architect would likely complete during the actual design process. Coverage begins with an introduction to architectural styles that have dominated the field over the last four centuries, followed by basic design components related to the site and structure. A hallmark of this best-seller is its step-by-step instructions for the design and layout of each type of drawing associated with a complete set of architectural plans, with projects that can be completed using either CAD or manual drawing methods. Readers will come away with the knowledge needed to complete each of the drawings required by most municipalities to obtain a building permit for a single-family residence. Comprehensive coverage also explores the field of commercial drafting, as well as basic materials used for construction, common construction methods, and drawings typically associated with commercial construction.

Great buy.......2007-08-24
Just the book I was looking for. The price was right delivery was fast.
I would buy from Amazon again.
great product.......2005-10-04
item was received in a time manner and in great condition at a cheaper price
thanks, would like to do business again in the future
Great for a newcomer to the architectural world.......2002-09-25
I bought it used (1996 edition)at a bargain rate, in top condition. I'm changing from mechanical to architectural design and the book is priceless for me. It has all the basics, and lots of details. The book is a textbook with assignments and tests. Saves going to class. The focus is on design rather than CAD.
1980's Book.......2001-01-02
I have this book. This book is a poor atempt at up dateing a drafting book to a CAD world. The CAD parts of this book are small and short. They were added to an existing book to bring it into the 1980-90's. The seems to be witten by a school teacher not a practiceing Architect with very little background into what is done in a small Architectal firm. I have not looked at the new addition but here is what it needs, a total rework of the existing material to bring it up to the year 2000, along with a CD-ROM that includes all the question at least one or two full sets of house plans. First a stock set of plan would allow the teacher to due a room addition project, change to a set of stock plans. a second set of plans be unfinished just the outline of the house, and a door and window schedule with blocks of all the windows, other drawing could be started also. It's not worth the ..., when there are up to date books for far less money. A stock set of plan would allow the teacher to due a room addition project, change a set of stock plans. a second set of plans could be unfinished just the outline of the house, and a door and window schedule with blocks of all the windows.
Architectural Drafting and Design.......2000-09-05
This text has the ability to encourage the student in architectural drawings because of its excellent use of architectural designs and actual color photographs which back up the drawings. Clear examples are used to make the drawings come alive to the student. The text is challenging but understandable to the college student. It is creativly written in a clear and concise way. Great work, Mr. Jefferis!

Customer Reviews:
Graphic Designers need to buy.......2007-09-02
Fantastic!!! Just the Color book is worth the price. Every thing in here is a nice simple direction for designers. The information is great if you ever get stumped as to where to begin with any project. Plus it comes in a nice case to keep it all in. A fantastic resource.
Excellent Reference and Resource Combination of Books.......2007-08-23
Though the clasped plexiglass box is quite comely and altogether unnecessary, the contents are well worth the price. I am an independent Graphic Designer and have found these little gems to be of great value not only with ideas but also for technical guidance as well. Don't let their small physical size fool you, every page is packed with helpful info. Plus they have durable vinyl covers and are small enough to take with you and throw in a bag or purse if you want. Krause is a master of design and you'll find a lot of food for thought here.
A great design tool. .......2007-07-16
Just like writers, designers get "designer's block" these books are great for browsing and sparking new ideas. The color index has both CMYK and RGB values, and is great for finding new color combinations. The Idea Index is great for inspriation, and the layout index is great reminder that not all layouts have to be 8.5x11.
Great designer's resource. I highly recommend this boxed set.
Take the plunge.......2007-06-27
After borrowing my friend's book of color designs for nearly a year while redecortating my house, I finally took the plunge and bought the boxed set. I use the colors book the most, but the other two also have interesting combinations and design ideas. They are full of need to know information including how to be aware of what you are saying or emphasizing with your layouts. Wonderfully put together, these books will be useful to the beginner or the ultra experienced. And they come in their own cool box.
midget books for tiny minds.......2007-05-28
These books are so tiny they remind me of a certain appendage of my X husband dennis, and they are just too tiny to take seriously too just like him. They do come in a cute plastic case, but my X husband would use a sock.

Customer Reviews:
Should be a standard in schools........2007-09-23
This book should have be required reading for any graphic designs school. Being a graphic designer myself, I must say that this book is a valueable tool to sellings and building strong brands. It would have been great to have in school.
Truly a great read!.......2007-08-27
I am in the brand-redesign phase with a local brand/identity designer and purchased your book for additional guidance. It is a truly a great read!
Great Client Education book.......2007-08-02
This has wonderfully designed graphics and charts explaining the identity design process. This is a really good client education book, explaining the design process, why they need design, what identity design consists of, etcetera. I was looking for a book like this to explain to clients why they need identity design, what good it does, what it consists of and why their company cannot do without it any longer.
I also think it would be a good book to use to explain to family members, friends and neighbors "what you do." It would be a good book for someone who wants to start their own graphic design business, who is considering graphic design as their field of study, or who wants to convince others that graphic design is important. I recommend it highly for MARKETING professionals and those in ADVERTISING.
You big, giant companies that have lots of mulah can give this away as a gift to your clients, or use this as a book to set on a coffee table in the waiting room or something. But I am going to use it to explain to clients why identity design is important.
This book is not good for teaching graphic designers about creating brand identity. It is stuff we graphic designers were practically born knowing. But if you are a graphic designer who wants brand identity jobs, get it! It will help you turn your potential clients into clients.
The Bible of Branding!.......2007-07-30
I boght this book hoping it would be useful for me in creating a brand for my new company, I must say the book has been a fantastic tool for this purpose!
The book is full of practical examples and shows you in a step by step process how to create and build a brand. If you a building a company and/or launching a product branding will be the key to success. this book is a great tool!
It's just fine.......2007-07-16
Another compendium of conventional marketing advice and wisdom. Better- written than some, more thorough than others. A good beginner's text.

Design demystified.......2007-09-16
Writers who want to improve the look of whatever they write will find some excellent information here. This book will also suit anyone who wants to understand the basics of graphic design. Williams' engaging writing style makes this both an entertaining and useful read. Make sure you do the exercises and quizzes - they're fun and extremely helpful.
Worth the time to read!.......2007-07-17
This book is a quick and nice read. It really helps me have a better concept of the main ideas of graphic design. It is definitely a good investment to take the time to read it. Whether you are a beginning web-designer, or are involved in other types of graphic design, this book will certainly save you a lot of headaches in the future.
Opens a new world .......2007-07-16
I love this book! I've spent quite some time working on a new business card for myself using Williams' clear and basic instructions, and the process has been exciting and fun. I now have a business card that says much more about me and is light-years away from the standard format available at the do-it-yourself places.
If you can tell that your brochure/card/letterhead/flyer/poster looks terrible but have no idea why, do yourself a favor and buy this book.
Very informative........2007-06-25
My professor actually made us buy this book for our Intro. to Desktop Publishing course. I really like it. It has great design info for graphic designers and non-designers alike and has some humour thrown in there as well. I would highly recommend it.
Outstanding Resource.......2007-06-21
Robin Williams is great at creating books that are fantastic at helping jumpstart the creative processes. Beyond the helpful information found in the text, the samples of the work are inspiring. Whenever I have to come up with new ideas for logos etc. I thumb through Robin's books.
I also recommend them to clients to give them a better understanding of what makes for effective graphics and layout design.Equinomics: The Secrets to Making Money with Your Horse Business

A Very Helpful Book.......2007-09-21
I am a Game Art Development student, and this book has been indespensible in aiding in my understanding of the Unreal Editor. Without this book, I'm sure that it would've taken me waaaaayyy longer to get things done than the limited time that I had. Even though the book is more expensive than the game itself, it is a must have for any aspiring modder or game creator.
Haven't Used it just yet..........2007-08-04
I just bought this book, and although It seems like it's going to be great, my major problem is finding either Maya PLE 5.0's registration number, or Maya 7.0 PLE and its registration number.
the Autodesk site only has Maya PLE 8.5 to download and there are only plug-ins for Unreal for Maya 5.0 PLE and Maya 7.0 PLE (note: there is no version for the regular Maya)
So it kind of leaves you stuck with nothing to use. There is also nothing on the net about it either.

Packed full of Useful Information and Helpful Tutorials it writen with the Lamen in mind. and take you into the Skills needed to make almost a full game. The one thing it lacks is the swcripting language section. This lovely, well-written book is concerned foremost with creating beautiful typography and is essential for professionals who regularly work with typographic designs. Author Robert Bringhurst writes about designing with the correct typeface; striving for rhythm, proportion, and harmony; choosing and combining type; designing pages; using section heads, subheads, footnotes, and tables; applying kerning and other type adjustments to improve legibility; and adding special characters, including punctuation and diacritical marks. The Elements of Typographic Style teaches the history of and the artistic and practical perspectives on a variety of type families that are available in Europe and America today.
The last section of the book classifies and displays many type families, offers a glossary of typography terms, and lists type designers and type foundries. The book briefly mentions digital typography, but otherwise ignores it, focusing instead on general typography and page- and type-design issues. Its examples include text in a variety of languages--including English, Russian, German, and Greek--which is particularly helpful if your work has a multinational focus.

Type History not Examples.......2007-08-10
This book makes it sound like it's going to tell you how to make unique typography. However, it just tells you the history of type and typographical styles. In my opinion unless you are taking a class on the history of type this book is not useful for any other purpose.
A great resource.......2007-05-21
As a designer, you can't argue the value of having this book as a resource. Reading through it can be heavy at times but the amount of great information far outweighs anything negative you could say. It's become an important part of my collection and has given me a great perspective when approaching any projects that need a typographic punch. Well worth a purchase and will be for some time.
Hard Read.......2007-05-12
This boks is considered a must buy book for any one in typography or graphic design. I do not enjoy it one bit. It is a hard read, and it loses my interest. It is not good for reference at all and because the paragraphs are so long winded that you could not find what you were looking for. This may be a book more for the advanced typographer or designer, definatly not for a beginner.
Great Typography book -A Must for serious designers!.......2007-04-03
From A to Z, this book covers all aspects of typography. If you thought you knew a lot about fonts, their history, usage, manipulation and every aspect -this book will show you how much you really don't know. A definite must read for the serious type nut.
