Book Description
As the Web evolves to incorporate new standards and the latest browsers offer new possibilities for creative design, the art of creating Web sites is also changing. Few Web designers are experienced programmers, and as a result, working with semantic markup and CSS can create roadblocks to achieving truly beautiful designs using all the resources available. Add to this the pressures of presenting exceptional design to clients and employers, without compromising efficient workflow, and the challenge deepens for those working in a fast-paced environment. As someone who understands these complexities firsthand, author and designer Andy Clarke offers visual designers a progressive approach to creating artistic, usable, and accessible sites using transcendent CSS.
In this groundbreaking book, you’ll discover how to implement highly original designs through visual demonstrations of the creative possibilities using markup and CSS. You’ll learn to use a new design workflow, build prototypes that work well for designers and all team members, use grids effectively, visualize markup, and discover every phase of the transcendent design process, from working with the latest browsers to incorporating CSS3 to collaborating with team members effectively, and much more.
Written and edited by Web design and CSS luminaries Andy Clarke and Molly E. Holzschlag, Transcending CSS: The Fine Art of Web Design
• Uses a visual approach to help you learn coding techniques
• Includes numerous examples of world-class Web sites, photography, and other inspirations that give designers ideas for visualizing their code
• Offers early previews of technical advances in new Web browsers and of the emerging CSS3 specification.

Great Buy --- Best web design book yet.......2007-09-06
I haven't been involved in too many designs as I am more prone to actual development coding (backend scripting). However after taking a new position that has me waist deep in both worlds I knew I needed to start spending more time understanding design aspects, process, progression, concepts, etc. This book saved the proverbial "day" for me.
Andy Clarke's masterpiece gave me an indepth view of so many different areas of web design it was hard to put down and not re-read immediately after finishing it the first time! I constantly refer back to this book for inspiration. It was written in a way that helps trigger your thought processes about how his examples and concepts pertain to your own work or work you might want to do in the future.
Excellent read and I look forward to reading more work from Clarke.
Good book, but frustrating at times........2007-08-24
Altogether this is a great book, especially the design theory, grids, workflow, and css principles, but the part where you jump into the hands on coding is poor, missing files from the download section of the site, plus parts of the coding examples that seem to tell you too input some css rules, then 2 pages later those rules are not there anymore without telling the reader, very confusing, you find yourself searching around the internet for support, but to not much avail, in the end I just gave up on the hands on section on this book, and just read the other parts, but these parts are good enough on there own to stop me from returning this book.. such a shame too, was really enjoying the writing style of Andy Clarke, seems the proof readers let him down :(.
Way more than pretty pictures........2007-08-15
"Transcending CSS" is its own example of the next evolutionary step in writing about web design. Created for designers, by designers, they are not stingy with the code needed to develop the beautiful, functional layouts. I bought this book as a "reward" for launching my first CSS-based design for a client, and it's already paid for itself by showing me how to develop my CSS skill set for current and future clients.
This book isn't really viable in today's world.......2007-08-11
This book I thought was a pretty nice, awesome looking book, and it is...
...Until he starts getting into the new CSS standard, which really doesn't help anyone on today's browsers, therefore isn't a really viable solution for now. This will be a great book in like a year or 2, but for anyone who really wants to be able to design CSS for websites in all browsers (Explorer, Firefox, etc) then this is not your book.
This guy should have stuck to the current standard, he would of been much better off.
Brilliant.......2007-08-08
I was pleasantly surprised when I read this book. It advocates a content-out philosophy that I hadn't expected from an author with a background in design, although I'm well aware of Andy's long-standing commitment to web accessibility.
As expected, the graphic imagery and the layout of the book is quite stunning and very inspirational. But that was only to be expected.
Anyone who creates web sites should read this book, especially those with a design-centric view of the process. Andy Clarke shows us that it is possible to have the cake and eat it too: you can create visually stunning sites that are semantic, standards-compliand and accessible.
Book Description
Karel Marten's work occupies a unique place in the present European art and design landscape. While working in the tradition of Dutch modernism, he maintains distance from the main developments of his time: from both the practices of routinized Modernism and the facile reactions against it. His work is personal and experimental, while at the same time publicly answerable. This book presents Martens graphic design oeuvre in reproductions of startling fidelity, and described in informal captions. Printed on uncoated paper and Chinese-bound, the book itself has a compelling tactile quality. For this long-awaited second edition, twenty-four pages have been added to cover Marten's most recent work.
Customer Reviews:
beautiful presentation.......2002-12-02
This book presents a compilation of work from a contemporary Dutch graphic designer/typographer, Karl Martens. It also displays some work from his students. The written portion is quite minimal (as it should be). Most of the book concentrates on the visual, presenting both the raw, unfinished processes and sketches to the finalized, published work of Martens. If you like typography, book binding, page layouts, grid structures, you will love looking at this book. The book itself has a handmade feel to it. it even looks like the text and pictures are printed on inkjet printer and the pages are folded odd and even pages to make double sided spreads. I recommend this--to especially students and faculty at RISD.

Book Description
In the tradition of Persepolis, In the Shadow of No Towers, and Our Cancer Year, an illustrated memoir of remarkable depth, power, and beauty
Danny Gregory and his wife, Patti, hadn't been married long. Their baby, Jack, was ten months old; life was pretty swell. And then Patti fell under a subway train and was paralyzed from the waist down.
In a world where nothing seemed to have much meaning, Danny decided to teach himself to draw, and what he learned stunned him. Suddenly things had color again, and value. The result is Everyday Matters, his journal of discovery, recovery, and daily life in New York City. It is as funny, insightful, and surprising as life itself.

great little gem of a book.......2007-09-23
love it, love it, love it !!!!
a wonderful inspiring little book.
perfect smaller size (6"x8") to carry along with your sketchbook to keep you encouraged in your drawing.
I expected more.......2007-04-08
I suppose I had some misperceptions of this book. I was assuming there would be more inspiration that would cajole me into journaling and artwork. I also thought is was he who was disabled - it was his wife. There was little mention of how his wife's diability figured into the whole pictue of his life. As a disabled person, I thought there would be some insight into overcoming disability to do what you want. I do however, love the way he draws and journals. In the end I saw this as a simple journal that anyone might have done. I still have his other book and I have higher hopes for that.
loved it!!.......2007-02-27
i loved it! i recived the book for valentines day and finished in a day...its very intresting to examine dannys drawing and learn about his life in nyc..
Interesting and sort of sad.......2007-01-30
Interesting story about the author's evolution into an artist. The entire book is made up of his sketches and writings during a particularly challenging time in his life. It is essentially his private art journal copied and put in a book.
Couldn't put it down! Great Book!.......2006-09-16
This book is actually the "textbook" for the pen and ink drawing class that I am taking. I bought it ahead of time and read it in 2 days! I had a hard time putting it down and now that I am finished I keep going back to it to discover the clever ways Mr. Gregory depicts life in the big city and abroad. What he has to say ranges from being dramatic to funny and interesting. He takes the every day things we take for granted and makes them into something worth taking a second look at. I am thinking of buying all of the books he writes.....This is good stuff!
Book Description
Our special today is a tasty treat called May I Take Your Order? Brimming with classic restaurant menus from the roaring '20s through the fabulous '50s, May I Take Your Order? is the first book to feature this hot new collectible and design resource with hundreds of color reproductions. Author Jim Heimann showcases 250 original menus from all kinds of restaurants, including roadside diners à la Route 66, theme restaurants (travel, Western-style, celebrity eateries), five-star restaurants, nightclubs, bars, and cafés. With menus and vintage photographs from some of the greatest dining establishments of the era, this survey of a popular artform offers an uncommon perspective on design in the early half of the century -- as well as a glimpse of prices and culinary preferences of yesteryear. From the elegance of Art Nouveau to playful Art Deco designs to the ultra-modernism of the late Ô50s, this is an exciting new y'nd for artists, designers, and restaurateurs looking for ideas and inspiration.

Good reference.......2003-04-09
As a designer, I consider this a must-have as a visual reference, though incomplete because of it's general lack of interior art. I suspect the cover art is prevalent because of it's appeal to collectors. Well-designed presentation by Jim Heimann. Glad to have it, but I want to see more.
Excellent historical book inspires journey down memory lane!.......2001-02-16
As the author of "Restaurant China, Identification & Value Guide for Restaurant, Airline, Ship & Railroad Dinnerware, Volume 1 and Volume 2," I was delighted when I received this excellent historical resource. The 1000+ priceless photographs, along with difficult to document dates and locations are most appreciated. In addition, it is a pleasure to simply page through Jim Heimann's books and imagine life as it was in days gone by.
Great Book..........1999-01-16
I thought the book was great, but I was hoping it would show more of menu interiors rather than the covers/exteriors. While folks can show you excerpts from text...it's a bit harder when you are buying a book for the images.

ripoff.......2003-01-24
Disappointing:- very bad quality reproductions of Wllies drawings and photographs, they are blured and lose much of the detail. Many amateur drawings clearly not by Willie.Only good pics. are on the cover.
An Inspiring Magazine.......2002-09-01
Bizarre is clearly the basis for much similar modern writing - you can see its influence in many places today. However, it is of more than historical interest; a lot of it is enjoyable reading even today, and some of the bondage pictures - even in murky black and white - are magnificent. I have been inspired and encouraged by it to lace my corsets tighter and wear shoes with higher heels. Of course, after half a century some things have changed; we would no longer encourage teenage girls to smoke or countenance cruelty to horses for example. (We might not even want to encourage the caning of children, but in modern society ill-treating horses is probably considered a worse sin!) However, if this sort of thing appeals to you, buy these books.
For the curious, for the informed...........2001-09-15
.... I would suggest you pick this up any way you can. As Eric Kroll says in the intro to the books, John Willie was one of the pioneers in fetish photography and drawing. Now everything comes off well, but a lot does. Even more interesting though are the letters that Bizarre received over the limited time that it was in operation. A constant source of interesting ideas and points of view....
Go back in time to Fetishville,1948.......2000-08-19
John Wille's magazine "Bizarre" is reprinted in two hardcover books that come in a slipcover package that measures 8" x5 1/2" x 4" thick. It's full of his drawings and photos of corsets, high heel fetish shoes, pin ups of the era and page after page of women in bondage and they are just loving it. Its sort of kinky stuff: tiny waisted women who love being tied up but the people who enjoy reading about such things will love these two volumes and will want to add it to their
collection along with their DVD of Bettie Page and some pictures of Ashley Renee and Darla Crane.
Extreme 1940's fashion for women.......2000-06-14
This collection of two hardcovers is a real conversation piece. Both editions are full of B&W/color photos, illustrations, comics, advertisements, and cartoons. There is a heavy slant on bondage, restraint, and domination.
This is a facinating look back into 1940's women's fashions and attitudes which were a step beyond the norm.
The two editions are hardcover and come boxed.
If you like this, I also recommend EXOTIQUE which is also published by Taschen.

The man who created the imagery of the band, Pink Floyd, from the 1970s on brings his art and memoirs of the recording and production of the groundbreaking album Dark Side of the Moon. The added new prints will be the collector's choice.
Customer Reviews:
Perfect Companionship For Listening to Floyd.......2005-02-25
Storm Thorgerson is the artist who designed the bulk of Pink Floyd's artwork, and "Mind Over Matter" is a combination of memoir, scrapbook, and gallery. With the possible exception of Led Zeppelin, no British rock band of the 1970s paid closer attention than Pink Floyd to the potent magic a well-designed album cover could lend to music the album contained. Much like Zeppelin, it's almost impossible to think of Pink Floyd's music without imagining the incredible visuals on their album covers. In essence, Thorgerson is almost an adjunct member of the band.
Graphic artists will appreciate this collection because Thorgerson's almost Magritte-like graphic style is also perfectly and endlessly adaptable to the commercial marketing. Casual Floyd fans will get a kick out seeing so many classic Floyd images reproduced at much larger than CD size. More serious Floyd fans will savor Thorgerson's behind-the-scenes insights regarding the band. (I was surprised to learn that Thorgerson leans more towards Gilmour than Waters). Throughout, the author discusses his designs in a very straightforward, conversational, non-pretentious way. As a bonus, he also includes graphics from Floyd tour books, posters, and DVD clamcases.
Given that so little video footage exists of Floyd, this oversized hardcover collection provides the perfect collection of visuals to leaf through while you're listening to "Dark Side of the Moon" for the umpteenth time.
A "Beautiful" Mind.......2002-03-25
I absolutely knew I had to purchase "this" book the second I saw the book cover. Storm Thorgerson is utterly amazing, eyecatching & perhaps a bit eccentric (aren't most true artists?) I loved reading about his ideas/how he came up with them & how he laid them out in the end, and after reading this book, I now want to check out other material on him as well. Pink Floyd is indeed legendary as are the works of Storm Thorgerson. A Fantastic view of Unimaginable Talent. Check it out.
Very good, but not a true graphic artists compilation.......2000-09-24
As a music fan, there are two things you want to add to your experience, a songlist compilation and a biography. Anything more is really too much, but in the case of groundbreaking album cover art, and knowing Pink Floyd's history of employing visual effects in their shows, a book like this is necessary, especially since albums are gone now, and the tiny graphics you get on a CD jewel case don't compare with the stuff promoters used to jam into album jackets. This book is a trip into Storm Thurgeson's head, not necessarily Floyd's. The difference is not much since Storm was a boyhood chum, and listened so well to his employer's ideas, instead of pushing his own. That's one reason the band was so successful musically as well, was Hypnosis' reliance on the members' themes. This book is not a graphic artist's design book, though I wish it were, but it would be tons bigger. It covers 30 years (and not even all the Floyd's covers (for instance, The Wall)). But you will appreciate the fact that Storm operated more under impluse as a designer than by today's modern design houses which try to render graphics in a production line style...can't be done. The author's bylines give us insight if not in technical process, then in the intellect process, and it's good fun knowing this guy was a friend to the Floyd for a LONG time, even having to uncomfortably stand in the middle of relationships for the 'Is There Anybody Out There?' live Wall issue. All in all, I'd give 5 stars for the artwork and presentation, but lose half of one for lack of technical explanation. Enjoy!
A Mindblowing Journey.......2000-06-22
What do you get when you cross art and the greatest rock band in history? A materpiece! If I had the chance, I would give this book a million stars!
Storm Thorgerson, mastermind behind most of Pink Floyd's album artwork, has compiled almost all of the rare, unusual, interesting, and familiar pieces. It also includes stories on how they (the art) came to be (which, by the way, sheds a light on the innovative genius of the band). It goes from the early years of Syd Barrett to the post-Waters era. This book is a must for any Floyd fan, especially one who is interested in the history and progress of the band.
storm and po: applause!!! the eye of hipgnosis.......1999-07-20
a wonderful book for any album art fan, or a floyd fan...i am both. Storm is captivating in his art, and it is art. Great insight into the band also, as written from a close friend perspective.
Customer Reviews:
Very Impressed.......2007-08-02
I am thoroughly impressed with this book. Its scholarship is impressive and helpful in my preparations to study medieval history at Oxford. And the thoughtfully written bibliography and through indexing of the manuscripts illustrated assist further studies. Even though it's not on my official reading list and is certainly not a light nor compact book, I'm packing it and taking it with me.
But, as scholarly as this work is, if one simply wants an attractive coffee table book on the subject, this can certainly be one. If one wants a very readable, engagingly written, well illustrated introduction to illuminated manuscripts, this is for you as well.
There is even some helpful guidance on collecting the more available manuscripts such as Books of Hours. And as the Fellow Librarian of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge and with his 25 years experience in evaluating manuscripts for Sotheby's, Dr. De Hamel's knowledge is not just theoretical.
Yet the price is extremely reasonable for a book of this quality.
A Joyous Entry for Anyone's Library.......2007-04-20
Simply a treasure in print, Christopher De Hamel's work on medieval manuscripts is an enjoyable and fact-filled romp through the Middle Ages as if no "darkness" in the period ever existed. Focusing on a descriptive narrative that is as delightful as it is informative, the text leads the reader from one interesting setting to another, belying the breadth and scope of its coverage. One meets the educational reformers in Charlemagne's court, the scribes of the cathedral schools of Laon and Chartres, the workers in English scriptoriums, and many others in this highly researched, but clearly and engagingly written book. The reader feels as if he is simply touring the European countryside from one location to another and watching the patient and unrelenting work of scribes, copyists, and illustrators as they seek to develop the most enduring artifact of the period. Underpinning the entire work is a series - no, a PLETHORA - of beautifully reproduced and highly detailed medieval manuscript reproductions, many of them full-page, to the extent that one finds himself questioning why the text doesn't cost three times the price. A rarity in that it contains both outstanding prose as well as stunningly reproduced photographs, this text should be in every medievalist's (and art lover's) own scriptorium.
Fabulous book and indispensable resource!.......2006-04-26
I loved this book! I used it for a graduate course on Illuminated Manuscripts, and it was one of the main textbooks we used, but I used it often after the course as well. I really enjoyed reading it, and found that it was unlike most of the typical text books I had formerly used. For any art history student, it is an outstanding resource. For anyone who loves illuminated manuscripts, book arts, or the Medieval period in general, this is a wonderful resource. It is a book that I consider an indispensable resource in my personal library. It is very well written and easily accessible for anyone. Although some of the terminology may be unfamiliar, it isn't so esoteric that it is beyond the scope of general understanding. It is clearly one of the best resources on the subject that I have ever come across!
Frrom someone who should know..........2001-03-15
Chris DeHamel works researching books for Sotheby's. That is all he does, and his numerous books on the subject show his mastery and command of the subject. Everyday he goes to work, he is getting time to research, free of teaching committments that fetter the ability of other scholars to pursue their writing. His research and ability shows in this beatiful and well-written book, which is an excellent introduction to the history of the book and to the processes and culture surrounding the book as an object. His book progresses, chapter-by-chapter, through the different groups that books were designed for, describing where and why they were made, and the special challenges of each. Chock-full of photographs of lavish manuscript writing and art, this volume is not only an extremely suitable textbook for art history and history classes dealing with the book or commodity-culture, but also is a great personal or coffeetable volume, and supremely reasonable at the price it is provided at, considering the cost of so many art texts.
Spectacular teaching tool.......2000-12-30
This is the first illumination book I encourage my students to purchase (with Drogin's history of calligraphy). This is an entirely reasonable price with abundant color and b&w pictures.
Unlike many tretises on the topic, this doesn't limit you to post-1200 Anglo-French. This gives you a true oversight of western european illumination of the entire span of the middle ages (spanish, moorish, greek, latin, etc...)
Added to the benefit of examples, de Hamel doesn't subject you to the same pictures you've seen in every other 2-bit book (yes, Victoria, other books existed before 1200 besides the Book of Kells).
The text is thoughtful without being dry and boring. This is written for an audience which is expected to appreciate the subject, without assuming you've devoted your life to it already.
Walk, do not run, to get this. A must for anyone who is learning how to illuminate.

Book Description
Aimed at the cigar aesthete or those admirers of "puros", as they are proudly revered in Cuba, this book gives the history and evolution of the cigar band. During the 19th century, when gentlemen wore white gloves at social gatherings, tobacco often left dirty stains on their hands. Therefore, they insisted that their suppliers cover a portion of the cigar with a protective layer. And, the cigar band was born. These bands became the armorial signet of manhood. A mark of social status and of beauty, many artists began lending their talent to the creation of these commemorative symbols. This collection of bands tells the story of the last 150 years, from the general of the War of Secession, the Presidents of the United States of America to the delicate flowers reproduced by craftsmen.

Book Description
A step-by-step guide to the design and analysis of CMOS operational amplifiers and comparators
This volume is a comprehensive text that offers a detailed treatment of the analysis and design principles of two of the most important components of analog metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) circuits, namely operational amplifiers (op-amps) and comparators. The book covers the physical operation of these components, their design procedures, and applications to analog MOS circuits-particularly those involving switched-capacitor circuits, and analog-to-digital (A/D) and digital-to-analog (D/A) converters. Roubik Gregorian, a leading authority in the field, gives circuit designers the technical knowledge they need to design high-performance op-amps and comparators suitable for most analog circuit applications. In this self-contained treatment, which is loosely based on his well-received 1986 book, Analog MOS Integrated Circuits for Signal Processing (coauthored with Gabor C. Temes), Gregorian reviews the required basics before advancing to state-of-the-art topics and problem-solving techniques. This valuable guide:
* Clearly explains configuration and performance limitation issues affecting the operation of CMOS op-amps and comparators
* Details advanced design procedures to improve performance
* Provides practical design examples suitable for a broad range of analog circuit applications
* Incorporates hundreds of illustrations into the text
* Concludes each chapter with problems and references to advanced topics, useful in textbook adoptions
Introduction to CMOS Op-Amps and Comparators is invaluable for analog and mixed-signal designers, for senior and graduate students in electrical engineering, and for anyone who would like to keep up with this essential technology.

Comprehensive treatment of op-amps and comparators........1999-05-27
This book focuses on two most important components of analog design: op-amps and comparators. A lot of new developments in recent years are covered in this book. It is very useful for any analog designers. I just feel two chapters which cover data converters could be more detailed and complete.
