excellent service.......2007-09-26
The service is faster I received the book in 3 days before the promise date..Very good service...
Very Useful For Beginners.......2007-05-15
This is a very useful book for beginners. The topics are contemporary, the pictures are engaging, and it's not overwhelming for new students who don't want to be scared away. I have book number 4.
Side by Side: Student Book 1, Third Edition.......2007-01-04
Excellent book for beginning English students. The material is presented logically, leads to great discussion topics and is useful for real life encounters.
I love "Side by Side".......2006-09-12
I was from China and started my life in the USA as a graduate student in Engineering. Although I took the TOEFL before I came to USA, my English is not good enough to express myself clearly and accurately. I decided to improve my English about 4 months ago and started to borrow some ESL books from local libraries.
About 2 weeks ago, I found four "Side by Side" books (Book 1 to Book 4) from a local library and borrowed them. Now I am working on the Book 3 and I have enjoyed every book. I believe that "Side by Side" Book 1 to Book 4 will make very good textbooks for ESL (or ESOL) programs.
SIde By Side Book 3.......2006-08-07
My wife and I have been using Side By Side since living in Japan as ESL teachers 1987-89. We used the first edition way back then. My wife still is active tutoring English to Japanese in our area of the USA and this is an excellent series for English learners. We would recommend it to anyone from any culture.

exelent.......2005-09-28
This book is very complete. You can find almost everything that you need to learn.
The book missing the content.......2005-09-02
The pages of the content are ripped off. The pen writtings are all over the book. It is in a such bad shape that sometimes it is hard to make out the words. I have received the book in awful condition, even for the used book.
Good book, but with errors and no apparent support........2001-11-15
I'm a college ESL instructor, and am a bit frustrated. This book has some good exercises, and is very good, but it DOES have errors, and no web site or phone number is given for support. In these Internet-intensive days, a support web site should be a given! I've got to correct students' homework now, seeing if they found the 8 grammatical errors in the given paragraph; I can only find 7! I wish there were someone to contact.
The best book I've ever read..........2000-04-15
This book let you catch the most important thing easily. What's more, you would be suprised at it's detail which makes you understand the tricky things... Whenever you are stuck, it will give best help.
Customer Reviews:
Very easy for beginners.......2007-08-24
This book has helped my wife a lot in understanding the english grammar beside her real life english course. The audio CDs are very practical way to practice both listening and writing. I strongly recommend it for any english learning beginner. No need for any instructor.
Azar is great!.......2007-08-14
The best grammar series around! I like all the books in the series and have used them in my different levels of ESL classes in several international schools. Good for middle and high school students, as well as adults. Some can be used with younger children as well, although the content is sometimes for older students. Excellent workbooks, too!
For teaching ESL.......2007-01-30
Azar books are a must for any ESL teacher. Can be used in the classroom as a textbook or as a guideline to the teacher for lesson plans.
Customer Reviews:
Great resource.......2007-03-14
This is a fantastic resource for literacy instruction. The author provides lots of practical tips and techniques for each approach as well as the theory behind each one. It's easy to read, too.
Substantive, responsible, engaging, and practical.......2006-11-06
This is a fantastic book. It is intelligently written and engaging. It is far more interesting to read than, for example, Reutzel and Cooter's "Teaching Children to Read: From Basals to Books," which is stultifying by comparison. Gunning does not insult the reader's intelligence. This book is rooted in the research and, apparently, in considerable experience and thought on the author's part. Full of wise, useful, and detailed practical advice. Highly recommended.
this is a great book .......2006-03-23
This is a great book that will help future teachers and parents to teach their children literacy. It has information about how to help children to understand reading and how one can help them to learn. This book has good information for anyone who wants to become a better reader. The only thing that I dislike about the book is that the chapters are long, but it is worth it.
Very useful text.......2006-03-16
This is a very useful, and up to date text. I'm in an education program right now that focuses heavily on literacy. This text book has become my bible! This text even carries complete lists of children's books to use for teaching certain ages and subjects!
I love this book and I'm sure I'll be using it for years to come!

Customer Reviews:
great book.......2007-09-24
Simons is certainly an environmentalist, and I love that about him. This is the first text book I have enjoyed reading. He makes excellent points, though it isn't all totally workable. Generally a great book.
Great overview of landscape architecture.......2007-06-05
This is really THE seminal instroductory book to landscape architecture. It's not really specific enough to be a true reference book, but it covers such a vast range of topics that it would be unrealistic to expect it to be. Instead, Simonds did a fantastic job of summarizing an amazingly broad field one subject at a time. Still, it is not so broad that the reader will fail to see the trees through the forest. It does include a lot of very helpful illustrations and explanations about such topics as spatial relationships and how they create different environments (and subsequently a particular design might be appropriate or inappropriate depending on the circumstances). But that is just one small sample of the kind of valuable lessons this book is filled with. I often start with this book when I approach a subject that is new to me because it gets me on the right track. In that sense, it's not just for beginners. And the 4th edition contains much-needed updates of the outdated photographs that are in the 3rd edition.
Customer Reviews:
Great explanations, many exercises, answer key.......2006-07-30
As a teacher of many grade levels and English fluency levels, I found this book very useful. It has perhaps the best explanation I've read on "perfect" tenses. My ESL student couldn't understand why he should use a simple past tense versus a present perfect tense, and this book helped him.
The book features many useful charts on major and minor grammar topics. I find the charts very effective and easy to learn and teach. There are also plenty of exercises in this book, too.
I've used the book with 5th graders, 12th graders, and ESL adults. I highly recommend it. It's very well organized and quick, quick, quick to use in the classroom.
Book Description
A revised and expanded version of the highly successful and innovative pronunciation text for intermediate to high-intermediate students of North American English. The Clear Speech, Third Edition, Student's Book provides learners with visual representations of important pronunciation features, such as voicing and syllable length. It features a reordered table of contents, a greater emphasis on listening recognition, and more coverage of vowel sounds. It also contains a Student Audio CD, so students can practice many of the exercises on their own.
Customer Reviews:
CLEAR SPEECH.......2007-10-01
THIS PROGRAM IS GOOD FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO LEARN ENGLISH. IT IS A GOOD WAY TO LEARN A PERFECT ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION. TRY IT.
A great book for non-native speakers.......2007-07-23
The book starts from clear listening tests which made sense. Introduction to syllable(s) and sound(s) by listening to the CD is very useful, plus the pics show how the lips change when the alphabet vowel sounds are being said.
Improved my English. .......2006-07-22
"Clear Speech" is the best. First, I use the text book & CD at a college, and I brought the Class Audio CDS for self-study at home. You need it, because CDs coming with Student's or Teacher's books don't include all listening dialogs.
Clear speech-teacher edition.......2006-03-17
The product contains mainly the answer key for the acutal student exercise book, and if you don't have that to refer to, it's not as useful. The teacher editon should contain the student workbook for easier reference. There is a CD that comes with it but again without being able to see the corresponding exercises in the student workbook, you feel as if you're working blind.
Good for speaking AND understanding.......2005-05-09
Clear Speech is a well-conceived pronunciation text that, in my experience, students have found very pleasant to use. It covers individual sounds, as well as speech rhythm and intonation, in a very fluid way. It can help instructors teach ESL students to pronounce well not only word by word, but also to arrive at more natural-sounding sentence flow. I have found that the exercises in the book benefit students beyond their own pronunciation, and actually help them to understand native English speakers better. The third edition is a vast improvement over the previous one, because it guides students in deciphering English spelling and provides more practice in specific, troublesome sounds. The new edition also includes a practice CD, which is something many students using the second edition often wished for. The graphic simplicity of the book is a huge advantage over other pronunciation texts available. All in all, I think Clear Speech is one of the best - if not THE best - choice for teaching pronunciation.

Customer Reviews:
Nicht sehr gut.......2006-12-08
I was frustrated with this book because it lacked explanation for important grammatical concepts. I was in a class room and still found it difficult to use this book. My teacher, a native German speaker, was continuously pointing out flaws/mistakes.
Bad experience.......2006-07-16
This is not a textbook you will want to learn a foreign language from. It lacks a decent amount of good examples when introducing a new concept and is almost like the workbook, 75% of the chapter seems like a big exercise. I was very annoyed by this book.
Not very good.......2006-04-05
Too overpriced, doesnt do a very good job of teaching at all even in a classroom setting. Half of the excercises are just guesswork because explanations in the book are minimum to non-existant. This book was definitely not worth the price. Probably not even worth free.
Great for class, terrible for self-study........2005-08-01
Really, there's one thing to say about the Na Klar series... it's virtually worthless if you're trying to learn by yourself. In a classroom setting, with proper instruction, a ton of listening CDs, and lots of supplementary work, Na Klar can be a valuable tool. But at that point, a box of flash cards wouldn't be much different.
Before taking my first German class, I tried to open the book on my own to ge a head start on the class. I barely got through half of the introductory chapter before I was completely lost. Mass sections will provide, for example, a German conversation and simply say "Now that you understand what's been said" with absolutely no helpful explanation- save a wordlist at the END of every chapter... hence my flash card comment- 90% of your time with this book will probably be spent memorizing those all too sparse wordlists.
Of course, if you're like me, this book was required for a class and there wasn't exactly much you could do about it. If you're in that boat as well, you absolutely MUST get the lab/workbooks and all related listening CDs that accompany Na Klar. In fact, you'll find that nearly all of Na Klar's guide to proper German pronunciation is tucked away in the lab workbooks that you might never bother to check out since they're not referred to at all in the central book. Of course, the listening CDs with the lab books are also mostly worthless as (for example) you'll be asked to differentiate between long and short vowel sounds spoken by people who don't display any appreciable difference between the two at all. Still, SOMETHING to listen to is better than nothing (there are answers in the backs of the workbooks for most exercises), and despite there being absolutely no reference to the listening CDs throughout most of the main or lab books, the CDs play a crucial role throughout Na Klar's curriculum. You'll be largely lost through whole sections of the books if you don't check out that chapter's CD to see if you're missing related materials- again, materials that are absoltuely necessary to the book but aren't mentioned at all during said parts.
For the price of this book, this is all very ridiculous. But if you read this far, it's probably required for a class. At least you've saved money shopping online.
For those of you who aren't bound to this book by a course list, basically anything else you can get your hands on would be a better idea- especially for the price, most especially if you're learning outside of a classroom alltogether. I reccomend the "Idiot's Guide to..." and "...for Dummies" books. Despite the names, they're quality books that cost under a quarter of Na Klar's overly hefty fee, and will probably produce similar results.
So...
-If you're stuck with Na Klar, get the supplementary materials (break out the credit card!), and always scan them for correlation, as Na Klar often fails to mention when one material will help (or is necessary for) another.
-If you're not stuck with Na Klar, it's easy to find better books. In fact, you could easily buy 2-3 cheap beginner's German books at your local store for well under under Na Klar's price and still have some cash left to buy refreshments as you crack them open to see which suits you best. You could probably even nab a book on useful phrases (a la the hilarious booklet "Scheisse!: The Real German You Were Never Taught in School") with the money that you're still saving versus buying the Na Klar supplements.
Top notch for class, not self teaching.......2004-12-18
Im a German major who just finished my first semester of German. I got an A, partly thanks to this book.
I have been teaching myself German BEFORE taking the class with some success actually, using a number of different resources (books, cds, sites, etc.)
And from experience I can say that this text books is top notch IF you have a german teacher to guide you through. Otherwise you will be lost at some point (in the early chapters most likely.)
So if you're thinking about teaching yourself German, this isn't the book for you.
Otherwise, I say "Go for it!" Great texts, pictures, dialogues, activities, etc etc.

Customer Reviews:
Superior Organization.......2003-07-19
I've been using Reading Reminders all summer to plan my sophomore reading class strategies next year. I love the organization of this book. Links to related sections are easy to find. Burke gives wonderful examples of so many worthwhile lesson ideas, like dense questioning, making connections, and repeated reading. There are dozens more. I can hardly wait to give my students the reading survey and to run off all the graphic organizers in the appendix!
As a 16-year teacher, I am often disapointed by workshops on reading that are really aimed at the elementary grades and "retrofitted" for high schoolers. This book is a high school teacher's dream.
Superlative.......2003-01-07
As a 26 year veteran of the high school English classroom, I am thrilled with Jim Burke's latest book, Reading Reminders. It has come at a perfect time as well since, like many schools in our state, we have adopted a reading goal as part of our school improvement plan. Not one of the teachers in my department has a reading endorsement or any idea of how to teach reading. So this book has been incredibly helpful to us all (as well as to colleagues in other departments). It is so practical, so well-researched and thought out! It also reminds me of some of the best practice I engaged in when I started teaching but have somehow forgotten over the years. I also appreciate how easy it is to use - you can start implementing the strategies immediately although I think it is most effective to read it through beforehand to appreciate how beautifully it aligns with what is overall best practice in teaching English. Having done a great deal of research lately on this subject, I have not found any materials to equal this book.
(I also give his English Teacher's Companion to all of our new English teachers. They invariably rave about it.)
Want instant results from your students?.......2002-09-12
Without a doubt, this book (and anything else by Mr. Burke) is a must have for any teacher of Reading or English. How Mr. Burke finds the time to put together such wonderful resources is beyond this mere mortal of an English teacher, but I would be lost without Reading Reminders. I literally put some of the strategies to work the day after I bought the book. Several of my collegues rushed out and bought it after seeing the results I was getting. If you have struggling readers, this book will breathe new life into them--and you!
10 Star home run.......2002-08-21
The books description "Do you have a minute? That's how quickly this book will help you improve your students' reading skills. Designed to be read on the run and make every minute count in your classroom, Reading Reminders features Jim Burke's one hundred best techniques for teaching reading, complete with tools and tips on how to implement them. " is a start.
What this book does is teach the facilitator be they public, private or even homeschooling how to get a students attention as well as how to inspire the student to do more than simply read words. I especially like his recommendation on silent reading and how to orally share what one has read and what the author has attempted to convey. This is really important since many students see reading as a chore and end up buying abbreviated books that skim the book and little else. I believe the book can be a valuable tool for parents as well, and that the student whose teacher has read this book, will become a student who also reads quality books for pleasure.
A must have!.......2001-12-22
Today's language arts classrooms wouldn't look the same without the influence of Jim Burke. In Reading Reminders, Burke is able to offer us a concise, easy-to-use book full of strategies and methods that can be used every day. Best of all, the book's table of contents and index are user-friendly, making this an on-the-desk reference. Each page is one "reminder"--a tip on how to complete a task to ensure student success. The next time you're preparing a lesson, a simple thumbing through these ideas will give you several tricks that can be used to spice up your instruction. Highly recommended!!
