Book Description
They dared to risk it all in a skiff of reeds or leather, on a ship of wood or steel, knowing the only thing between them and certain death was their ship. To explore, to seek out what lay beyond the close and comfortable, every explorer had to embrace danger. And as they did so, what arose was a mystical bond, a passion for the ships that carried them. From the very first time humans dared to warp the fabric of space, escaping from the ashes of the third World War, they also created ships. These vessels have become the icons of mankind's desire to rise above the everyday, to seek out and make the unknown known. And these ships that travel the stellar seas have stirred the same passions as the ones that floated in the oceans.
While every captain has wished that their starship could be outfitted in the same manner as the sailing ship H.M.S. Beagle -- without weapons -- that proved
untenable. From the start, Starfleet realized that each vessel, due to the limited range of the early warp engines, must be able to stand alone against any
attack. Thus arose the idea, taken from the days of wooden sailing ships, that every Starfleet vessel must stand as a ship of the line. Through the actions of their captains and crews, countless starships have taken on that role. Here we remember some of those ships and their heroic crews.
In celebration of the fortieth anniversary of Star Trek, here for the very first time collected together are the spectacular images from the highly successful and acclaimed Star Trek: Ships of the Line calendars. Gloriously rendered, each of these illustrations was created exclusively for Pocket Books. With text by Michael Okuda (The Star Trek Encyclopedia), the story of each of these valiant starships comes to life.

Excellent book for those who love Star Trek ships..........2007-09-22
I've been a fan of the "Ships of the Line" calendars for many years. This book is essentially a compilation of those stunning images, with some explanatory captions added. As such, it's a wonderful volume for any Star Trek fan who enjoys "beauty shots" of the various ships shown in the series. It should be noted, however, that these are pieces of original digital artwork. They are not screen captures of the various series or movies, but unique images created for the calendar series (and now, for this book). It was a great value and an excellent addition to my Star Trek book collection.
Ships of the Line (Star Trek) .......2007-09-21
Ships of the Line (Star Trek)was not what I was expecting. I was hoping for a more techincal review of the fleet.
With that said, the artwork was great, although I would have liked more on the ships other than that bad 'Enterprise' series!
The Romulan Warbird was the best pic, in my opinion!

Beautiful book--but know what you're getting........2007-09-19
This is a beautiful, imagination-stimulating, sometimes breathtaking book. But potential buyers should know three things: 1. This book is about half the size of the average coffee table book (FYI, in case you don't read the fine print or easily "get" measurements in the Product Description), so they are not big pictures. 2. This is an *art* book; these are "illustrations," not photographic reproductions from the Star Trek T.V. series(s) or movies. I wasn't familiar with the "Ships of the Line" calendars, so was expecting "real" photos of the Star Trek ships, not paintings. However, some of the pictures are computer-design artwork that very effectively look like photographs. I know it's a matter of taste, by I find these more enjoyable, more evocative.
3. While ships from all five of the T.V. shows are included (not the animated ST), there is of course a favored emphasis on the Enterprise in its various/successive generations. There are only 37 illustrations, so that doesn't leave room for a whole lot else. (Opposing/even-numbered pages are blank, except for a short paragraph of text by official Star Trek history guru Michael Ocuda, which offers interesting commentary, though more impressionistic thatn encyclopedic.) Also, the book's cover illustration is not repeated in the book, so if you get a torn or badly smudged copy, you're out of luck. I was also disappointed that a book called "Ships of the Line" didn't have a single schematic drawing or even a comparative illustration to scale of the various ships (like is sort of done on the cover picture).
Even given all these qualifications, there are at least 10 pictures in this book that really inspire me and excite my imagination; and any two of them, for me, are worth the price of the book.
Disappointed.......2007-09-04
Great art work, but I was expecting the entire book to give us a complete look at rarely or never before seen star fleet ships in various situations. There was a limited look, but mostly that of the series ships we're already quite familiar with. I wasn't too thrilled about the blank left pages as well. Lots of potential for a great coffee table top book. Hopefully we'll get more in a Volume 2.
Another Great Star Trek Photo Book.......2007-08-12
Margaret Clark & Doug Drexler have out done themselfs. This book is packed full of some of the best CGI graphics yet to be published. It's a must for any trekie as it will keep you spell bound just looking at page after page. The book covers all era's of trekdom with graphics of all the major ships we've come to love. It even has a few hints of things to come. The book is graphic intense with very little story, but that ok because some of the graphic will have you beliving that these ship are real. The only short side to this book is it's lack of alein ships as it's cover suggests. There are some aliens ship but none are the focal point of any of the graphics. All in all I would highly recommend this book for anyones library.

Book Description
Starship Spotter was created more than two centuries ago to serve as a reference guide to assorted space-going vessels. Captains of the spaceships of the United Earth Space Probe Agency used this simple paper tool to enable a ship's crew to quickly distinguish friend from foe in the unexplored reaches of the cosmos. When the services were merged to form Starfleet, this paper book disappeared from use. Only recently rediscovered, the newest editions of this book have been the sole purview of Starfleet Academy.
Each year, a new class of Starfleet cadets carefully reviews and revises the contents. The ships displayed in Starship Spotter have been chosen as a tribute to the crews who have served on them and the valor shown, regardless of the ship's affiliation. Although only thirty ships could be included, the cadets feel these ships reflect the noble history of space travel.
We proudly present to you the Class of 2383 edition of Starship Spotter.
Customer Reviews:
Could have been better.......2007-08-12
Each ship listed has basic info, specifications, and a wire-frame view on the first two pages. That is followed by a 2 page full cgi rendering in the black of space.
The renderings are dimly lit and don't show the ships well, unless you only wanted to see engines glow.
Will Not Purchase.......2007-03-12
This was a ill-concieved item and the publishing company was looking for a quick buck. This book debuts a month after Enterprise debuts on television. What were they thinking? Just from the table of contents, it isn't worth the cost or the effort to produce this.
Where's the Breen, The Gorn, The Tholians. Bajoran ships are missing, Ferengi ships are missing. Both Enterprise B and Enterprise C are missing, what a glaring error on the part of the writers and the publisher. Even among those that are mentioned, this book just barely touches on what can be found in the Star Trek Encyclopedia.
This book has nothing to offer the fans or the occasional watcher. It toutes itself as a reference for "Academy Students" of the class of 2383. It's a good thing this is science fiction, because it would leave them with nothing useful to have embarking on their careers.
This really shouldn't have a rating of any stars, but...
Don't go near this book unless you like wasting money.
Interesting Book.......2006-11-10
This book has many important info about some interesting ships seen on the TV series. The graphics are good but are in double page, so sometimes you don't a good overall vision because the division of the pages.
Potential sadly unrealized........2005-09-13
The previous reviews are quite accurate, and should be read before deciding to purchase. For my part, I was overall content with the book, since I was more interested in the ship statistics and some of the "historical" descriptions than the artwork, so the admittedly disappointing nature of the ship renderings did not put me off as badly. However, the omission of key ships (see below) was a major disappointment, particularly galling was the insistence on describing things I could care less about, such as the Midas Array, "worker bees", etc. If one is going to limit oneself to 128 pages and 30 ships, then perhaps a little more common sense ought to have been devoted to selecting which "ships" to describe!
Another problem I had with some of the more exotic alien ships was a lack of information on their statistics, especially the Species 8472 bioship. While one cannot reveal all secrets, having everything listed as "unknown" is more than a little unsatisfying. At the least simply state observed qualities (i.e. maximum warp (observed) 9.46) or something similar.
I also agree that the line drawings of the ships were not as useful as they could have been. I would suggest either replacing or perhaps augmenting them with more standard 3 view drawings (front, profile, and top) as are given in the Star Fleet Technical Manual, for example.
It is my sincerest hope that a revised and heavily expanded 2nd edition will be released. Should the author(s) read this, here are some glaring omissions in need of being added:
- Excelsior class
- Ambassador class
- Constellation class
- Oberth class
- Daedalus class
- Borg cube
- Borg sphere
- Borg tactical cube
- Enterprise NX-01
- Klingon Negh'Var battleship
- K'Vort class cruiser
Very nice and much appreciated additions would be:
- Vulcan ships from Enterprise
- Klingon ships from Enterprise (a number of new designs are in evidence)
- The Romulan ship from Enterprise (the minefield episode)
- Other Earth ships from Enterprise (particularly the 2nd season finale)
- "Kobyashi Maru" Neutronic Fuel carrier
- Freighter destroyed in STIII by Bird of Prey
- Tholian ships
- Kazon ship
In spite of the unflattering reviews, this is a neat little book. For the price (on Amazon, that is), it is not a terribly bad buy. Wouldn't pay any more for it, though! However, there is much room for improvement, and I fervently hope the authors will take it upon themselves to release a vastly enhanced manual in the near future.
Already been done.......2003-12-15
There's plenty of Star Trek websites that feature schematics of starships featured in this book. Most of them provide more information than published. A Google search will turn up these sites and you'll enjoy the lot of them.

Wasted Potential!.......2004-01-27
For roleplaying, I prefer Star Wars - Star Trek can be a bit tedious; still, being a hard core Trekkie for over 25 years, I wanted to give this book a chance. I was hoping that it would be equally useful as an information reference, and as an RPG supplement.
As far as gaming is concerned, it's ok. The books major flaw is that it does not stand alone. In order to use it, you must already own the Narrator's Guide. Practically every section tells you to refer back to the other guide - the only bright point is that it usually gives you the page number. The writers could have easily transferred the necessary information to this volume; but instead, a marketing ploy was used to sell more books.
For a refference: The ship statistics given are pretty good, but in large part, only relevant in terms of game usage. Ships' backgrounds could have been fleshed out a little more, and the graphics style used to depict the vessels appears chunky and angular. I'd hoped the entry quality would be closer to that of the now defunct Star Trek Magazine, or the various Trek technical manuals. Despite all that, as a source of info, my biggest complaint is volume. Sure, they covered "Over forty different starship designs," but they neglected throngs of others. Given that they chose to make a complementary book of nothing but ships, I feel they should have been exhaustive in their efforts.
So, regarding both information and roleplaying, I'd say this book is incomplete. I wouldn't recommend its purchase unless you are heavily into the RPG. It only deserves two stars, but the simple fact that it's Star Trek earns it an extra star.
Very Nice Suppliment.......2003-05-31
Starships is a very worthwhile purchase for narrators that plan on duing heavy-duty starship combat in their campaigns. The expanded construction rules really allow your imagination to take full control and create whatever you so desire, and the book provides a plethora of different starships from major galactic powers (e.g. the UFP, Romulans, Cardassians, Klingons and Borg).
You'll need the Narrator's Guide in addition to this book if you want to create an expanded edition starship because they did not copy over various key tables. It's also a bit frusturating that they did not provide an updated Starship Profile sheet. But overall, I'd say Starships is a worthwhile addition the Star Trek RPG family.

An okay story, competently written........2005-05-02
This is one of Diane Carey's better-written stories; there are few examples of her occasional tendancy to try too hard for "creative" (read: incorrect, sloppy, and/or weird) use of the language, and those that there are are fairly minor. On the other hand, the plot was one of her weaker efforts, and that's usually one of her strong points. Still, on balance, this is a passably interesting Star Trek story, not bad for a slow day with little else to do, but not riveting by any stretch of the imagination.
ST-TOS: The Great Sharship Race.......2002-10-30
Star Trek The Original Series: The Great Starship Race written by Diane Carey is a book, not just about a starship race, but a book about saving a whole planet from the treachery of the Romulans as they show up for the festivities.
The call was made throughout the galaxy, as a friendly race of people called the Rey have contacted the Federation for a celebration. The celebration of so many spacefaring and intelligent races, all to be hosted by the Rey, as a starship race is born. The Federation will send the U.S.S. Enterprise their proud flagship of the fleet under the command of James T. Kirk. Everything should be going fine, fine that is, until the Romulans show up, now the poo has hit the fan.
You can always count on the Romulans for treachery, perfidy, deceit, and insidiousness. Well, you will not be disappointed, soon we find out theat the U.S.S. Enterprise is having engine problems, but that's not a the Enterprise is under relentless attack. But that's the least of Kirk's problems, now, Kirk has to prevent the annihilation of an entire world. Brought to you by the Romulans, this deadly game of cat and mouse will soon occupy the entire crew of the Enterprise.
There are twists and turns throughout this book keeping you well entertained till the end.
F1 in space.......2001-09-14
"The Great Starship Race" was everything I expected it to be.
Shallow story, based on a bad premise. Even the Romulans, who usually are a saving factor, couldn't help the book that is all about racing with spaceships, with a weak plot in there somewhere.
The characters are two-dimensional, and the story goes nowhere, and when you combine this to the ending, wich is about as bad as it could have been...
Well, it was written well, had many exellent scenes concentrating around the dynamics of the characters of the Romulan Commander and his Subcommander, so it wasn't a total failure, and the Romulans still were refreshing, even if they weren't nearly at their best.
And I have to mention that unlike so many Carey books, we actually get a prominent female quest-star, and although she is shallow and suffers from the characterization flaw many female sci-fi characters share: the HPS (Hidden Penis Syndrome), we still have some gender stabilization.
Ms. Carey revealed in a recent interwiev that she had to rewrite almost the entire book, and maybe that is the cause of the utter childishness and naiveté of "The Great Starship Race".
Race to the end.......2000-11-25
Come one, Come all... The race of the galaxy is about to begin... On this starting line you see, a hospital ship, a few freighters, private scout cruisers, Romulans, and the Enterprise.
The prize is a special coin made for the event, and braging rites. There is more then meets the eye, in this race. But what is it...
This is one that you should read to see what even a half powered federation starship can do.
Race to the end.......2000-11-24
A fun time fo some ship of the Federation. The great race, would you be able to beat one of the best ship in Starfleet. The Enterprise, of course there is a catch. The Enterprise has been made to be the equal of a normal freighter. What... Cut the Enterprises abilities down, then add a suprise element of the Romulans into this. What do you have... A really big race... but for what, a price, or to save a race from death. Only you have to read to find that out.

A dissapointing book full of stereotypical characters.......2001-04-09
All in all I enjoy reading these novellas set in the characters' past.
They have some problems, still. First of all, they are way too short.
Secondly: the characters are teenagers. I am 15 myself and that's probably the biggest reason I don't like young characters (in anything).
Why?
Because they act about 3 to 5 years younger than they should (in Wesley Crusher's case: about 10).
The starfleet academy books, in general, have been fairly believable in this field, although the characters still sometimes feel a bit immature.
This particular book uses characters that behave, in my opinion, like people behave when they are about 12 years old. Plus they are complete stereotypes.
For example the teamleader is a young male human who has joined starfleet because of his father. (Has anyone ever joined becase of his/her mother, brother, sister cousin...?)
I bought this book in hopes of a view to the character of Geordi LaForge, but to my dissapointment he was characterized poorly, and didn't even feel like the main character.
The plot was weak, the storytelling predictable... It's barely readable, but dont waist your money on it.
the haunted spaceship.......2000-08-15
I thought is was a little bit dissapointing considering what the plot was in general but for the most part it was good and I really enjoyed the twists that it took in a few places.
oh, ICK!.......2000-03-29
Maybe I'm just too old for this series, but this one seemed worse than normal. The whole ghost idea was pretty dumb in the first place. Don't buy unless you're trying to get all the books like I am.

Not bad, but not particularly good, either........2004-07-17
Pretty standard Star Trek fare; not as much action as we sometimes see, but a bit of moderately good drama, some alternate dimensions, Spock and Scotty's technical know-how is what separates the Enterprise from all the rest, a crackpot villain with good intentions who's sadly misguided, some annoying civilian politicos, and some Klingon bluster. Most of the usual elements of a Star Trek story, mixed together in a slightly new set of proportions. Nothing really exciting.
Caught in the starship trap.......2003-05-10
One of the more enjoyable Trek novels out there, The Starship Trap features some decent Spock/McCoy banter and a story that starts out slowly but picks up to a satisfying conclusion. The highlight of the novel, however, is Kirk's struggle with his own libido as he finds himself trying to charm a woman he dislikes solely because she's a "hottie."
Otherwise, The Starship Trap is typical Trek. There is a brief moment, when the Enterprise finds herself trapped in a universe with different physical laws than our own, for some real science to inject itself, but that opportunity is squandered as Spock solves all problems off-camera. What remains is the usual mindless, harmless entertainment.
Star Trek- TOS: The Starship Trap.......2002-11-19
Star Trek- The Original Series: The Starship Trap written by Mel Gilden is a character driven book. The author writes in detail and develops the charaters over the first 80 pages so, it's slow moving until you get to the surprise.
This book is a Kirk book first and foremost. Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise must prevent the galaxy from all out full-scale war. You see not only Federation ships are missing, but so are Romulan, Klingon and a whole host of other ship are not reporting in or arriving at their destinations.
Now, the mystrey is afoot, as Kirk tries to get to the crux of the matter. There is intrigue at the diplomatic reception as the Enterprise is en route, but the Klingon's intercept the Enterprise and demand answers. But, the crafty Kirk manages to get a truce with the Klingons. There is plenty of suspense, intrigue, skullduggery, and scheming in this book after the character development.
I can't give away any more to the plot or you'll figure out the ending. Read this book as it is vintage Kirk trying to save the galaxy.
not another visiting, anoying, female and critical digitary.......2000-10-23
As you can see in the title, I'm not amused by yet another plotline which features a visiting dignitary-with-pretentions. I was also bored by plotdivises as the hidden political agenda's and well kept secrets, that are used to send the Enterprise on it's mission. That's not what Star Trek is about (IMVHO)
But then, on page 95, the book starts again (or at last) with a surprise and a bang. All at once there is a real antagonist, a real plotline, with tension of it's own, and a danger to avert not only for the Enterprise, but for Starfleet as a whole. And the dignitary turns out to be not half as bad, as she had seemed all these pages.
So: this is not the best of books. Do not recomment it to non-Trekkies, 'cause - after reading this - they'll never believe Star trek is fun. But if you have patience and perseverance, than there's a good chance you'll at least enjoy the second half of the book.
Hijacking starships in hyperspace........1999-12-27
A TOS novel, this story is typical of the later TOS when smaller and smaller plotlines are drawn out and explored. Some sence of a pirate under current.

Easy to Draw.......2000-04-04
An excellent book so that the children learn how to draw theseclassical ships. It's also excellent so that the parents teach them andpass a while with them. Only see the drawings, there are no words, very good acquisition.Add several objects that are not with detail in the TV or the cinema, and that we draw now
