this was a big hit........2007-08-24
I gave this to my 15 year old nephew for his birthday. I worried that it was too childish for him...but he loves it, and it turns out to be perfect for him. He says he is addicted to the book...and that it has given him more ideas for original doodles and art.
A great book to enhance the artist in everyone!.......2007-08-23
Me and my kids are still enjoying this book. It sparks everyone's imagination! What is even better is the size. It is huge and very well made. We are enjoying it so much. We are looking forward to getting Dribbles !
Scribbles giant drawing book.......2007-08-09
I was looking for some unusual type of book to keep 2 kids busy in the back seat while on a short trip by car other than the usual coloring books....took a chance on 2 different scribbles books and I was so happy I did....the books really helped to keep the kids busy by using their imagination and skills on drawing.....I'm glad I stopped by Amazon.com to see what was available.
Brilliant coloring book to stimulate creativity.......2007-05-13
As others have no doubt noted, this is not your standard coloring book. The author encourages creativity by requesting you help finish or modify pages as you see fit. My 4-year-old daughter enjoys the book quite a bit. But here are a few *nitpicky* details that some might want to consider before purchasing:
1) The book is thick/heavy, so can be unwieldy to use if you're not at a table. It's also a little tough to get the book to stay open if you're a little one.
2) I tried to remedy some of the above by tearing out pages for portability and ease of use, but many/most of the projects span two pages. So unless you're committed to taping or stapling pages together (I'm not), tearing them out doesn't really help.
3) Finally, to get the most out of this book, the recipient would ideally be able to read. It's not always obvious what you're supposed to do on the pages, and it might be frustrating for a pre-reader (and his/her caregiver!) to constantly ask, "what does THIS say?"
In sum - it's a fantastic book that would be suitable for many ages... I just offer these tidbits in case you're thinking about buying one for a preschooler.
Not consistent.......2007-02-03
My daughter (age 3) enjoys "playing" in this book, but the things that she's asked to do are not consistent. For example, one page is just for zigzag lines and then the on next she is asked to draw clothes on 5 people. One is too simple, the other too complex.
There is a lot that she can do (and it's a REALLY BIG book), so it's still getting 3 stars.
Oh, and I was a little shocked to see the instructions of "draw a dead person" on one of the pages. I think we'll be skipping that one.
Book Description

Love it!!!.......2007-10-01
I have no idea what the naysayers on the other reviews were so disappointed about. This book has wonderful variety, excellent descriptions and layout. If you can't find something to use on your craft project you aren't very creative. Wonderful ideas and examples of how to apply to different mediums. Would recommend to any crafter looking for non-copywrited patterns and designs of all types, age ranges and genres of dragon lore. I will be looking to purchase more of the author other works, from tattoo art to celtic patterns.
Great Book of Dragon Patterns.......2007-09-05
I really liked the Dragon Art in this book and they show how to draw the dragons. Images can also be copied or traced for other craft projects. Would recommend for ages 10 and up.
Gift for 13 year old.......2007-08-10
When this book arrived at my home I flipped through it, and got hooked on the details on the creatures. They say you should learn something new everyday and that day I discovered there are many different kinds of dragons and other magical creatures. My Granddaughter, who received the book as a birthday book says she can now do the drawings for the "Dragon" book she's writing.
Dragon Pattern Book.......2007-03-23
Very nice collection of dragon patterns, nicely done. I would recommend this book to all who are interested in dragon drawings or patterns.
Great Book of Dragon Patterns.......2007-01-18
I bought this book as a Christmas present for a grandson. Both the grandson and I are very pleased with it.

A must have for any Star Wars Library.......2007-04-12
This is my favorite Star Wars book since "The Ultimate Visual Guide" came out a year or so ago. The books is a good introduction to drawing, and even provides helpful suggestions about different tools professional artists use to make their work look so great.
I'm a novice drawer myself, but that's ok because the book can be used by artists of all levels who want to draw better Star Wars works of art. It gives you basic advice about how to draw the human figure, and, once you are ready, more advanced suggestions to really give your work a professional, comic-book quality look.
I'm really looking forward to using this book, along with the Visual Dictionary series from DK to start drawing Star Wars again, and drawing Star Wars better than ever. In my experience, everything from DK is top notch, especially their Star Wars series. You seriously can't go wrong, the quality of work they put into their products is simply amazing.
worth money !!.......2007-03-09
Very nice book, worth the money, good explained "how to", hard to find in shops, but Amazon deliverd
very quick.Thanks
You can draw yes! But some work is involved........2007-02-20
I have taught drawing classes at our public libraries in my city. Some of the topics were Star Wars related. Although this book has a wealth of information and the artists are really first rate it is my experience that pre-teens and young teens may have a tough go of some of the practices and trying to imitate the artists of the book. It is somewhat of a drawing crash course and I have found trying to tell students "practice and most of all have fun" does not really communicate the time it takes to make a polished drawing as shown in the book. I am not saying it is bad but it is also not a step by step book exactly. Case in point: Jabba The Hutt. The book shows a build up from basic, to middle, to detailed stage. I have found students will have a lot of problems with the middle phase because they look so great in the book. The break down into smaller steps is needed. Since the publisher is aiming this at kids I think parents and teachers should be aware that yes it will teach them to draw Star Wars but it may be more work involved than a standard drawing-for-kids book would be like. I recommend the book but be prepared it is not exactly easy. I also would warn parents and teachers that the spiral bound pages are easy to get snagged and tare. A little extra care is needed in turning the pages but this also allows the book to stand up with the hardback binding and it also allows the pages to lie completely flat. Well worth the asking price for any Star Wars fan young or old.

Fun for kids.......2007-09-22
These books are great for art projects with kids. My class is making a gift for the school using these art ideas.
Ed Emberly is my hero and has been for over 30 years.......2007-05-19
When I was fresh out of college many moons ago and I have literally no experience or ability to draw even a stick man and that is the truth, a friend of mine at church was a kindergarten teacher and she referred me to the Ed Emberly drawing books and oh my. Happy happy day for me. ANd I used these with my now grown kids. They go step by step and start with like a circle and then add the ears and he creates so many fun books. The thumbprint books of his are fun activities to do with your children that any age loves, it is just too much fun, pretty soon the neighbors will be dropping in because they heard of the Emberly fun going on at your house. All of his books are marvelous, just get one and you will be sold !!!!!
GREAT BOOK WITH FUN IDEAS!!!.......2007-02-28
My kids age 8, 5 & 2 1/2 all love making the figures from this book. It really inspires them to be creative & the drawings are easy to follow!! My 2 yr old can make his own cards with his own fingerprints.(We made thank you cards with colored ink & these cute ideas) I helped him finish off the pictures, but we all have a fun time!
Ed Emberley's COMPLETE drawing book.......2007-02-06
This book gives a thorough selection of holidays, themes, and a wide variety of thumbprints to choose from. There are step by step sections for the beginner. The examples provide good color ideas as well.
In addition to using ones' thumb, the book encourages pinky finger prints, or even using just the tip of any finger. A great first thumbprint book!
Great book, great gift!.......2007-01-15
This is a fun gift for kids and teachers. I even gave a copy to a fingerprint examiner and she thought it was a great gift. Brought a smile to her face, I think.

Customer Reviews:
Wondering which breeds are in here?.......2007-06-27
I bought this book hoping there would be a picture of a weim or a similar breed. I got lucky, there is a weim! It does look incredibly easy to follow, but I know what dog lovers want to know: is MY breed in there? so here's a list:
The book is divided into "groups". The Hound group has Afghan, Basenji (sitting), Basset, Beagle, Black & Tan, Bloodhound (sitting), Borzoi, Dachshund (smooth), Greyhound (running), Irish Wolfhound (running). The Terrier group has Airedale, Bedlington, Bull Terrier, Cairn, Dandie Dinmont, Wire Fox, Kerry Blue, Scottish, Sealyham & a Westie (sitting). The Working group is actually the CKC working & herding combined, and has Malamute, Boxer (running), Rough Collie (running), Doberman (play bow), GSD (head shot), Great Dane, Mastiff, OES, Corgi (Pembroke), St. Bernard (lying down), Samoyed, Sheltie, Standard Schnauzer. The Sporting has Cocker (looks like American, is "sitting pretty"), English Setter (head shot), Golden Retriever, Irish Setter, Pointer, Weim. The Irish, Pointer & Weim are on point. The Non-sporting includes the Toy breeds: Bichon, Boster Terrier, Bulldog, Chow, Dalmatian (sitting), Lhasa Apso, Standard Poodle (continental cut I think), Chihuahua, Pomeranian, Pug, Yorkie. All the breeds which can have cropped or natural ears have cropped ears in these drawings.
Dog Lines .......2007-04-08
This was the ideal book for me! Thanks to this book, I can draw better than I ever imagined possible!
Ames' provides good, clear instructions. Beagles, basenjis, bulldogs and Germans shepherds are fun to draw. Any dog with a curly tail is fun to draw. Readers are also treated to a brief history of each breed on the bottom of each page.
Now, I wish there was a book (or maybe there is and I just don't know about them) of drawing classic cars. How to draw a 1964 Ford Falcon - how cool is that!
"Draw 50 Dogs" of the terrific Draw 50 series.......2002-10-13
I must admit that for me it takes a bit of work to draw realistic and 3 dimensional pictures. But using the 'Draw 50' books are so very, very easy to use! Lee J. Ames's drawing method is simple with the step-by-step instructions which are easy to follow. For kids 9 and older, "Draw 50 Dogs" by Lee J. Ames is great for drawing in your scrapbook, onto your notebooks, on cards, etc.
As the title says, this book includes instructions to draw 50 dogs; all of the 50 are different breeds and types. For me I love the portraits though I also love to draw dogs running or posing. My favorite pictures to draw are most probably the 'Irish Wolfhound', 'Cairn Terrier', 'German Shepherd Dog', 'Cocker Spaniel', and 'English Setter'. The book has another nice touch which is at the bottom of each drawing, there is some information on that dog including a brief history of the breed, average weight and height of the dog, and coat and color of the dog. Extremely helpful especially if you are thinking of coloring your drawing afterwards or would like to know how big to draw the dog when putting it in a background. My only complaint that there isn't a picture of a papillon to draw which I would like to (the reason? I have a papillon for a pet!).
Of course all of the "Draw 50" series are great, be sure to check them all out! The books I want are "Draw 50 Athletes", "Draw 50 Cats", "Draw 50 Cars, Trucks, and Motorcycles", and "Draw 50 Famous Faces".
Great book.......2000-12-27
I agree with the other reviews, this is a great book in the series. If you have an interest in drawing or know someone who does, you'll find these books to be very useful. My daughter had brought some home from the library & asked for me to buy them. They go step by step with you,in no time you'll have a wonderful picture!
Draw 50 dogs.......2000-09-08
This wonderful step-by-step drawing book has great illustrations like the Yorkshire terrier(My favourite). Lee J. Ames, author, is very kind as I had e-mailed him many times. Hope you like this book too...

A clear (and gorgeous) presentation.......2007-10-02
As a beginning student of design, I've been looking at a number of texts. This is the best I've come across so far. The concepts are presented concisely and in a well-organized format. The illustrations are superb, drawing from a number of crafts, media, and styles. The tone is friendly and encouraging. Recommended highly!
Easy Reading Design Education.......2007-08-07
This book is a very good choice if you are looking to broaden your horizons in design. There are lots of pictures for examples, and the text is easy reading.
Well-written guide with a wide range of aesthetically pleasing examples........2007-01-09
The book is well-written and the examples include some stunning and unusual pieces of art and craft (including painting, photography, pottery, needlework, quilting and more). It is an excellent introduction to design for beginners (artists, craftsmen and art-lovers) but even intermediate readers will find it useful.
A Great Resource.......2006-08-17
This book is a great resource. It is packed with exciting, richly varied visuals and clear, informative exercises that will enrich daily appreciation and application of principles of good design all around us. As a professional artist and teacher, I enjoy this book for myself as well as share it with my students. Design! is a great resource for the student or professional.
A pleasant reading.......2004-10-15
True! Design is everywhere you look but if you don't understand what you are staring at then design is useless. Fortunately, Steven Aimone's Design! will open up your mind and guide you to see the purpose of design. What are descriptive, narrative, emotive, utilitarian, and decorative of designs? What are the elements of design (lines, shapes, textures, colors, etc.)? Why are a certain elements arranged they way they are? Why is design space important? If you're unclear about the answers to these questions, this book will help you straightened out.
As someone who gets involved with web design as a passion, I had no prior training on design. While my classes at La Salle were too busy shoving down Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, and other software programs, the fundamentals of design were not part of the curriculum. One of our art professors realized the important of the missing part and tried to cover it but the class was not as successful as it should be. The hands on assignments she gave us (the black squares exercises) were definitely on the right track but most of my classmates thought they were kindergarten because the theories were missing. If she had this book to accommodate her assignments, the class would have been a huge success; therefore, Design! should be a required textbook for any Art 101 or Introduction to Visual Design classes at colleges and universities.
Design! is not only an invaluable design inspiration but an enjoyable reading as well because of its easy to read approach and clear visual examples. I recommend this book enthusiastically to anyone who designs for a living or pleasure and to anyone who simply enjoys and appreciates the aesthetic qualities from the work of art.

Coloring With Thread: A No-Drawing Approach To Free-Motion Embroidery.......2007-09-26
I bought this because I became interested in thread embroidery. Its a truely goregeous book with easy to follow instructions and wonderful photos. Her work really looks like 3D photography. I learned a lot just by reading it. A true enjoyment.
Splendid Read and "How to".......2007-03-05
As one reviewer says, this is a must have, must keep how to publication. As I read the introduction, it occurred to me that I could follow the directions and learn free-motion stitching, by which I have been terribly intimidated.
Ms. Fahl takes you from a first-class introduction to several practice exercises and projects -- all designed to allow the reader to become thoroughly comfortable with the process. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful, and the instructions are clear and well-written.
I use self-learning books all the time, and this is one of the best I've ever read and used. Learning how to draw with thread has been the most fun my sewing machine and I have had together in a long while.
Do yourself a favor and buy this one. It's surely a keeper.
A must have, must keep!.......2006-03-24
I enjoy traditional quilts and quilting methods, from hand quilting to stitching in the ditch. But I love free-motion quilting and have recently begun learning free-motion embroidery. Coloring with Thread by Ann Fahl is a fascinating and informative addition to this ever-evolving art form.
Embroidery is decorating or embellishing the surface of fabric with thread. And machine embroidery is the decorative stitching that is done with a sewing machine. Note: When you quilt, you sew through all three layers of a quilt. Machine embroidery is not seen on the underside of the bottom layer of fabric.
Coloring with Thread offers the reader a gallery of quilts to view, with their development by the author. It also includes instruction to help learn the process of machine embroidery, tips and techniques that will help make the sewing easier and more fun, tools and essentials, and actual projects that are easy enough to do that even a novice will be thrilled with the results.
I found the portion about stabilizers and hoops and the advantages and disadvantages of each to be helpful. The tips for bobbin thread selection and thread success should be marked for reference. And the practice exercises allow beginners to become familiar and comfortable with the process of machine embroidery.
Armchair Interviews says: If you're interested in learning about machine embroidery, Coloring with Thread is a must have for your library. And while this is a great book to learn from, the reader will also be thrilled looking at all of the spectacular quilts that are included.
How to create embroidered fabrics.......2006-03-19
Ann Fahl's COLORING WITH THREAD: A NO- DRAWING APPROACH TO FREE-MOTION EMBROIDERY tells how to use any sewing machine with feed dog drop to create embroidered fabrics. From a student gallery of works by students to step-by-step project instructions packed with color photos throughout and color sidebars of tips and tricks, COLORING WITH THREAD provides a fine new approach to creating enhanced fabrics.
Excellant resource for thread work.......2006-03-08
Ann Fahl does an excellant job of putting together an interesting book explaining thread work. It is full of information on needles, threads, cloth, etc. A very good resouce to have on hand. And an inspiration to try to new machine work in quilting.
Book Description
Greene & Greene furniture, widely recognized as the finest expression of the American Arts & Crafts movement, is presented here for the first time as working shop drawings. Featuring accurate front, side, and top views, complete cutting lists, and comprehensive section and detail views, these drawings offer today’s woodworkers a unique opportunity to reproduce the rare furniture line, which has often been photographed but not presented in such detail. Including introductory chapters on both the Greenes and the Halls, an extensive discussion covers suitable woods and finishes and provides solid technical information on how to make such characteristic Greene & Greene details as proud ebony plugs and splines, breadboard ends, and cloud lifts.

Greene & Greene for the master craftsman.......2007-05-07
This has to be the most beautiful book in the series of Arts & Crafts style shop drawings from Robert Lang, and I have them all. I have to say, almost every piece in this book is one where you have to decide that you are going to devote between 6 months and a year of your life to making. I have not yet made this committment, but I already see how reading this book has influenced some of the details on my other work. Gorgeous color plates of these masterpieces are included and everything is printed on archival quality glossy paper. Drawings are clear and descriptive text is concise and well written. Overall I recommend this to any student of Greene and Green (and Peter and John Hall, the craftsmen who actually built most of these pieces for them!)
Shop drawings book review.......2007-02-16
This book is a welcome add to the many showing the arts & crafts furniture designs. The text and drawings are first rate and guide you through the design process. The author certainly has done a complete investigation to put together this fine review of the many arts & crafts furniture era.
What it says it is.......2007-01-29
"Shop Drawings" is little more than it says it is. It would have been nice if it were more but it doesn't claim to be. If you have a background similar to Mr. Lang's as I do with drafting, then there is all you need to reproduce the Greene and Greene designs, at least from a dimensional stand point. You will however need to figure out the details on your own or reference some of the magazine articles on reproducing the Greene and Greene furnature. As Mr. Lang states in his book, it's not a how to guide. It's still a very good and informative book however and one you will want if you have visions of building some of this unique furnature.
What???.......2007-01-20
The two previous reviews by "experienced" craftsmen are laughable at the very least.
A book of shop drawings is that. And this one is one of the best. It is not a tome for beginners or for those who do not have the ability to infer and who do not have spatial orientation necessary to derive results from DRAWINGS.
The two previous reviewers must be very unhappy individuals to have to be led by the nose so much.
As to this book. If you truly are a woodworker, this is a fine reference work. Not only that but it also deals somewhat with the philosophy of woodworking. That is always a good touch.
Short on substance and details.......2006-12-12
Having purchased two other books of this nature by Mr. Lang, I placed myself on the waiting list at Amazon and waited months the get the book in my hands. I did not hesitate to break it out of the packaging and dove right into it. The first forty-five pages were dedicated to the history and other background information necessary to get a good understanding of the Greenes' design concepts and the practical methods used by the Hall brothers to construct the pieces. I was very disappointed with the scant number of details that one might expect from such a technical manual. There are a few photographs that show some of the processes (most of us know how to use a shoulder plane) but what was lacking were drawings to reinforce or to make clear some of the principles Lang was trying to describe. The book read like a series of essays rather than a substantive, technical manual with supporting details.
The actual measured drawings are just that as they lack certain pertinent construction details. I am a fairly skilled woodworker, having started the craft at the age of fourteen and have continued until today, even after a successful career in architecture; and what I have concluded is that this book was hurriedly put together to meet some preset deadline. It is my opinion that if more time and thought was given by the author to the details it would have resulted in a much better book.
So I am sorely disappointed with the contents and the lack of detailing and would not recommend this book to anyone but very experienced woodworkers. Mr. Lang has missed the mark this time and what a pity.

Good Choice!.......2007-09-16
I am very glad that I ordered this book. It has very detailed illustrations to help me get a handle on drawing my fairys.
One of the better Disney tie-ins.......2007-08-22
This step-by-step drawing book illustrates ten different characters -- the fairies Beck, Bess, Fira, Lily, Prilla, Rani, Tinker Bell and Vidia; the sparrow man Terence; and Queen Clarion. Best for older elementary-school to early high-school kids, it has easy-to-follow illustrations but goes into lots of intricate detail. Budding artists can use it to create full figures as well as portraits, each in four steps. The sections for Tinker Bell, Rani, Beck, Fira and Vidia also show how to draw portrait details such as shoulders, hair and eyelashes. Throughout the book, sidebar sketches display details such as noses, lips, eyes, clothing and wings, and show both proper and improper techniques. The book itself is printed on quality gloss paper stock, and nicely illustrated with soft floral backgrounds and leafy borders.
One final note: The female figures here all share the impossibly tiny waists common in cartoons and, for that matter, fashion illustration, but they don't have exaggerated bustlines or hips. And though the faces have plenty of personality -- Vidia bears a striking resemblance to Meg, from Disney's "Hercules" -- there's no cleavage, and none of the skirts or dresses shown are very high cut.
-- By Julie Neal, author of The Complete Guide to Walt Disney World.
