Golden Classics on 256 pages! A Zeppelin must-have!.......2006-07-26

I only wish this book contained ALL the songs! The tablature is outstanding and truly what any major Zeppelin guitarist fan is looking for. The solos are included, and unlike "Led Zeppelin Complete," this is a reliable, well-put-together arrangement of GREAT Zeppelin songs. The only bad thing about it is that the fabulous maker of the book did not transcribe MORE songs! At $15.72, this is the best deal for classic Zeppelin tabs, BELIEVE ME! "Dazed and Confused" is soooo intricate, giving me MORE than I asked for! And when I flipped to "What is and What Should Never Be," I realized just how much sense this book really makes. Definitely for experienced guitar players with ears "experienced" in the sound of LED ZEPPELIN. This book will help you to better understand the music behind the madness of this quartet. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED--grab this gold before it is gone!!

Zeppelin.......2006-04-15

All I have say is "Wow" this book is incredible. I've been playing guitar for about 3 months now, and I'm a HUGE Zeppelin fan so I decided to get this book. I think I might have bit off a little more than I can chew. I can play the riffs from a few songs, but that's about it. But, as they always say "Practice makes perfect." If you're experienced with a guitar, I would HIGHLY recommend this.

Truly authentic tab.......2005-11-04

This book is for real, unlike the "Complete?" book which is tabbed incorrectly. I've been playing now for 17 years and this book will give you all the intricacies of the songs chosen. With one technical exception: and this is for true authentic players, the tab to "bron-y'aur stomp" is presented as a capoed song in open F. On the Led Zep DVD however, Page plays this uncapoed in open G.

All others seem to be right on. Well worth the money.

I highly recommend this book. And it has the complete solos too.

These tabs are terrific!! I just can't believe that "Over the Hills and Far Away" was not one of the offerings. Worth the money despite this flaw.

For Advanced Guitar Players.......2004-11-17

The book is beutifully designed with the most intricate notes possible. When looking at it, you feel as if an entire orchestra can be created from it. They did a brilliant job with making it as close to the real sound of Zeppelin as possible. However, it is certainly not for begginers. if you are a great musician already and want to play Led Zeppelin, this is the book for you.

Joni's Book.......2007-01-10

This book was originally purchased from a music store in Montreal, Quebec, Canada for my grandson who was visiting from the Czech republic. His music teacher recommended it as a great basic tool for learning to read music and understand the basics of the guitar. With the help of this book he was able to show Joni that in order to be a great guitar player, no matter what type of music, a good foundation in reading music is essential.
After Joni returned home to the Czech Republic, the book was stolen from him. His father sent me the co-ordinates to allow me to easily replace it by ordering it from Amazon. Thanks. (PS, it was on sale at the time and I paid less for this copy than for the original).

Great book for bebinners.......2006-06-27

This book offers enough exercises to obtain a well practiced hand before moving into harder pieces. Other books seem to offer you building blocks, then show you the pyramide, but miss connecting the two. Shearer does an excellent job of helping all the pieces come together.

this is the ideal next book in the excellent Aaron Shearer classical guitar learning books. I like these books a lot. Very good buy for the price.

Better than the more recent "Learning Classic Guitar".......2005-08-25

I greatly prefer Shearer's original "Classic Guitar Technique" to the newer "Learning Classic Guitar," because it is less teacher-dependent and easier to use. This book can almost take the place of a teacher, bringing you step-by-step from basic to more advanced material, giving pointers and using capital letters and exclamation points to remind you of important facts and to keep you from acquiring bad habits. On the other hand, "Learning Classic Guitar" is useless unless you have a teacher, and even then I think that Classic Guitar Technique is a better choice. Even better than either book is Noad's "Solo Guitar Playing."

Good supplement to the newer edition.......2005-07-25

This is a second edition that's been around since the early 60's, I believe (the first edition is from the late 40's but I've never seen it). The more recent Mel Bay edition of Shearer's method goes into much more detail concerning the mechanics of playing. The older edition starts right off with finger alternation on the same string, leading directly to string crossing. The newer edition postpones alternation awhile, beginning with repetition of a single finger on one string followed by one-finger-per-string alternating, leading toward a much larger discussion of alternation and string crossing.

It's a useful distinction as it's easier to focus on the tone and motion of individual fingers before adding the complexity of alternation. Musically speaking, strict alternation is not neccessary nor even desirable in many pieces but flexibility in technique certainly is.

While the newer edition is superior in its discussion of mechanics, the music itself is less satisfying. There is no classical repertoire at all. All the pieces are composed by Shearer or a contemporary composer who's name escapes me. Many pieces are so nodescript in content and technique it's puzzling why more well known repertoire pieces weren't used. There's also an overabundance of duets, which will be frustrating to the student working alone.

While the earlier edition also contains Shearer's own pieces and exercises, there are more solo pieces and at least a gradual introduction of basic Carulli/Giuliani/Sor works. The second volume of the older edition covers higher neck positions while the newer edition remains almost entirely in the first (open) position.

The third volume of the Mel Bay edition on interpretation (along with a cassette recording) is very useful for developing a sense of phrasing and dynamics once you begin playing the easier repertoire pieces included in the earlier edition.

Bottom line: Get both editions and work through them in parallel.

I like this book pretty much. Songs are from the first 5 albums. Tabs are in key with the recordings and the solos are pretty much complete. Worth the price I gave for it, just wish there were more of their later songs.

I just bought the book. It is absolutely authentic guitar tab, with every note transcribed. The only drawback is that when a capo is used, the notes aren't relative to the capo. But other than that, this is an excellent book with all of JT's early classics.

Beginners beware, James uses millions of chords and picking patterns that
make the songs quite difficult.

More than I expected.......2007-04-29

I read Hunter's tube amp book and found his style and focus both unique and useful to those of us who are looking for info that is in many cases, difficult to find in a clear, organized format. Guitar tone is something that is more than just amplifiers and pickups so Hunter covers the effects of first, the guitar then the amps. I'm sure that there is some chance that your favorite guitar or amp isn't in here but many seminal ones are. If you really want to examine the subject; this is the best book yet.

Can't wait for the second edition..........2006-02-28

This is a great book, particularly if you are interested in guitar music pre-1980 or so. I can't help but feel, though, as if something is missing from the book, because so many setups that are now considered "classic" are missing. The most obvious oversight is think is the complete lack of coverage of the Roland Jazz Chorus JC-120 amplifier, one of the most important guitar amplifiers ever manufactured.

A close second is the omission of any information on Mesa/Boogie amplifiers, whose most "classic" proponent would probably be Carlos Santana. If the combination of a Paul Reed Smith guitar and any Mesa/Boogie amp isn't "classic" by now, it never will be! PRS actually play-tests all their guitars before they ship through a Mesa/Boogie amplifier.

It would also be nice to see some bass guitars and amplifiers in here, say, the Ampeg SVT, Trace Elliot SMX, and others. Ah well, maybe if there's ever a second edition...I'm sure if I thought about for a little longer, I could come up with even more examples that should be included.

Understand why your guitar sounds like it does.......2005-09-30

A very interesting book. It takes you an an interesting journey through the history of this little darling of ours, the electric guitar with accessories.
It is not just a description of the classic guitar/amp combos, but an in-depth explanation of which elements in the sound chain that affects your output sound, and why.
Unfortunately most of the readers have already bought their guitars and amps before reading this book, but remember, there's always place for one more combo in your den.

You wanna hear some magical sounds?.......2005-05-23

This is a fantastic book. Dave Hunter is also a great writer. I personally have always dug the guitar/amp combinations of my favorite bands. If you are a "gearhead" this book is a must. Hunter really does a great job covering different generes of guitar music-surf, blues, british sound, jazz, and a fantastic chapter on garage sound. The CD that accompanies the book is killer in both dynamics and sound-goose bumps!!

I'm not the foremost expert on vintage guitars as I currently own only two pre 1965 Gibson Archtops but this book is outstanding. I have been searching for a source to identify my current guitars and Mr. Duchossoir has provided me so much more. Mr. John Sprung's photos are outstanding as well. They cover the different variants from year to year as well as what hardware, from pickguards to volume knobs, tuners, bridges etc. The most complete book I've ever found with history and personal accounts of each Gibson model. A definite must for any player/collector of vintage Gibson guitars.
