Book Description
The diverse forms of Internet art and the tools and equipment used to create them are discussedand placed within the wider cultural context.
When the Internet emerged as a mass global communication network in the mid-1990s, artists immediately recognized the exciting possibilities for creative innovation that came with it. After a century of unprecedented artistic experimentation, individuals and groups were quick to use the new technologies to question and radically redefine the conventions of art, and to tackle some of the most pressing social, political, and ethical issues of the day.
Covering email art, Web sites, artist-designed software, and projects that blur the boundaries between art and design, product development, political activism, and communication, Internet Art shows how artists have employed online technologies to engage with the traditions of art history, to create new forms of art, and to move into fields of activity normally beyond the artistic realm. The book investigates the ways Internet art resists and shifts assumptions about authorship, originality, and intellectual property; the social role of the artist; issues of identity, sexuality, economics, and power; and the place of the individual in the virtual, networked age.
Throughout, the views of artists, curators, and critics offer an insider's perspective on the subject, while a timeline and glossary provide easy-to-follow guides to the key works, events, and technological developments that have taken art into the twenty-first century. 200 illustrations, 100 in color.

A Pathbreaking Resource.......2004-06-03
This book offers the very best of the World of Art Series' reference-based scholarship. Parallelled in the series only by the contributions of Hans Richter and Roselee Goldberg (most likely because Greene shares with these scholars the distinction of being a firsthand participant-observer in the phenomena she describes), this book is a wonderfully comprehensive and readable introduction to an arcane, subterranean art history. This will surely be considered the guidebook for a largely uncharted territory in contemporary art.
About the book.......2004-05-22
I read an article about this book/author in a recent issue of Time Out New York. At first I didn't think I would be remotely interested in the subject matter. It seemed pretty random. But the article really piqued my interest in the field. After reading the book INTERNET ART, I think internet art might be the most intriguing contemporary art practice out there. This book has a great balance of insider experience, 20th century art history, and handholding for novices (which I am). A really good resource.
Fascinating new field.......2004-05-22
I am an avid reader about contemporary art and I found this book pushed buttons and raised questions I had never even thought of... it's clear that the internet is a defining medium, especially for younger generations, and this book helped me think about the net in a more critical and expansive way. I love the World of Art series and recommend its titles to those trying to get their minds around art and art history. This book was great and I especially liked author's use of the non-net art examples including Tiravanija, Valie Export, and Cindy Sherman.
Books Are Not Net.Art.......2004-05-11
In the end, for all its fury (and New Mediasts and Anarchists worked side-by-side in the 1990s) revolutionary art was caught in contradictions. It could not or would not break free of the forms of bourgeois media culture as a whole. Its content and method could become transformations of the hierarchial media but, while net art remained imprisoned within the social spectacle, its transformations remained imaginary. Rather than enter into direct social conflict with the old media it criticized, it transferred the whole problem into an abstract and inoffensive sphere where it functioned objectively as a force consolidating all it wanted to destroy. Revolt against push media became the evasion of push media. Marx's original critique of the genesis of religious myth and ideology applies word-for-word to the rebellion of bourgeois network art: it too "is at the same time the expression of real distress and the protest against real distress. It is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, just as it is the spirit of a spiritless situation. It is the opium of the people" [Marx, Contribution to the critique of Hegel's "Philosophy of Right"].
Book Description
The Digital Divide refers to the perceived gap between those who have access to the latest information technologies and those who do not. If we are indeed in an Information Age, then not having access to this information is an economic and social handicap. Some people consider the Digital Divide to be a national crisis, while others consider it an over-hyped nonissue. This book presents data supporting the existence of such a divide in the 1990s along racial, economic, ethnic, and education lines. But it also presents evidence that by 2000 the gaps are rapidly closing without substantive public policy initiatives and spending. Together, the contributions serve as a sourcebook on this controversial issue.

Digital Divide and the Social Impact.......2003-01-24
A serious study of the social impact of those who have access to new information and communication technologies and those who don't, have to consider this book to analyze the importance of the technology adoption in the economic and cultural develop of all countries. The book represents a force guide to anyone who studies the paper of the government to spread technology benefits to all and the social impact of this hard work.

This attractively packaged two-volume set attempts an almost impossible task: to present the art of the entire world, from vibrant cave paintings dating back 30,000 years to the creative trends of the late 20th century. Though the arts of Europe are the most thoroughly analyzed, respected scholars in several specialized fields cover other cultures with cogent essays. A more unusual feature is the space devoted to art created by women, such as the late-Renaissance painters Sofonisba Anguissola and Lavinia Fontana--the latter was invited in 1560 to be an official painter at the Spanish court. Relationships between the art of different cultures are emphasized and, while each section can stand alone, each is shown to fit meaningfully into the overall development of the world's artistic heritage. Beautiful images grace the production's 1,200 pages, not only well-known icons but a wealth of lesser-known gems are here, carefully chosen to demonstrate the points made in the text. There are many delightful surprises among the illustrations, many of which are in color, printed to high quality standards in Japan. For instance, line drawings explain technical details, from "Lost-wax Bronze-casting" to "Elements of the Skyscraper." A vast amount of information is presented, but it is very well organized and easy to access, and an extensive glossary answers many questions. Marilyn Stokstad's Art History is a true tour de force, and its light and humanistic approach is a refreshing change from previous encyclopedic art-historical studies. --John Stevenson
Book Description
"The scope and depth are unparalleled," raved Midwest Journal when Marilyn Stokstad's Art History appeared in 1995. Booklist wrote: "Stokstad's sense of the grand continuity of art through time and across oceans make this an exceptional, thoroughly enjoyable survey."
Now this landmark work, with its unique perspective on art in the context of the period in which it was created, is thoroughly revised and updated with heavily reworked sections on the Renaissance and Baroque periods and on Modern art. The exciting changes also include: a completely new design providing greater clarity in the narrative and boxed materials; larger illustrations with a greater proportion in full color; and hundreds of new pictures including recently restored artworks and monuments.
With its fine cloth binding and ribboned slipcase, this authoritative family reference on world art and culture is a luxurious and significant addition to any home library.
1,295 illustrations, 914 in full color, 1,312 pages, 85/8 x 111/2"

Art History Vol. I.......2007-08-22
This book was great! The major ancient civilizations were covered. The photos and drawings are fantastic. Lacking are the non-European civilizations (such as African art) in the amount of information provided. Some civilizations are a mere one or two paragraphs in length before a new topic is introduced.
Excellent Art Historical Survey Book and Source for Further Reading.......2007-05-14
Although large and weighty, the book is beautifully packaged and binded. The quality of the text is certainly worth the cost. Stokstad's Art History briefly covers the history of art from pre-historic to contemporary early 21st century art. The types of art range from medieval to roccoco with several chapters covering non-western art (Chinese, Japanese, African, Pre-Columbian, etc..). In addition to the wide range of material, the author provides a text that is an excellent source of definitions for art terms and a substantial bibiliography. Although it is only a survey of a variety of art, the bibiliography is an excellent source for locating other texts for further reading on the topic of your interest.
Most importantly, the cd-rom that comes with the book contains both a study guide and the images of the excellent illustrations which are found throughout of text.
Absolutely Fabulous-A Must Have for ANY Art Historian!.......2007-04-25
I was instructed to buy this book for my art history class here at Concordia College. I initially cringed at the price, but after purchasing the oversized book I was amazed at what I saw. The glossy, large pictures are surrounded by information that you wouldn't find anywhere online. It's written intelligently, but you don't feel as though you were being spoken down to. The images are high quality and can be accessed on the CDRom, and the information is extremely useful and easy to understand. I didn't feel like I was reading a textbook when I used this book, in fact I found myself reading some of it for fun (as nerdy as that might sound). All in all it's a fabulous book that any student or art historian should at least take a look at. It's worth the price!
One thick book........2007-02-23
This book is chocked full of good art history information from the cave paintings in Lascaux to pieces from the early 2000's (nothing from the early 2000's that I'm familiar with, but there is a bit included). There are plenty of good pictures included in the book, and the CD-ROM seems like it would be really helpful for studying slides for art history tests, although i haven't done that yet. This book is pricey, yet its a good reference book for all those into art and art history. (plus its fun to look at even for those who aren't really into art (a good coffee table book after you've forgotten how much it cost??)) Well written material so I would recommend buying it if you are serious about art history.
Art History (Study Guide).......2006-03-01
I am very satisfied with the item, and it delived so quckly.

book price.......2002-02-21
This 93 page paperback book which is apparently free when bought as a bundle with an art history text book has a suggested retail price stamped in the upper right corner...Typical of many introductory internet books way to much space is devoted to explaining how the internet works, so that there is only about 10 useful pages of information. A far better book is available for [more money] but I don't have the exact title. With so many great internet sites for museums and bibliographic sources available it's too bad that almost nothing was included. A check for Nihonga style painting did not show anything...

Book Description
The 22nd International Free Electron Laser Conference and 7th FEL User Workshop were held August 13-18, 2000 at Washington Duke Inn and Golf Club in Durham, North Carolina, USA. The conference and the workshop were hosted by Duke University's Free Electron laser (FEL) Laboratory. Following tradition, the FEL prize award was announced at the banquet. The year 2000 FEL prize was awarded to three scientists propelling the limits of high power FELs: Steven Benson, Eisuke Minehara and George Neill.
The conference program was comprised of traditional oral sessions on First Lasing, FEL theory, storage ring FELs, linac and high power FELs, long wavelength FELs, SASE FELs, accelerator and FEL physics and technology, and new developments and proposals. Two sessions on accelerator and FEL physics and technology reflected the emphasis on the high quality of accelerators and components for modern FELs. The breadth of the applications was presented in the workshop oral sessions on materials processing, biomedical and surgical applications, physics and chemistry as well as on instrumentation and methods for FEL applications. A special oral session was dedicated to FEL center status reports for users to learn more about the opportunities with FELs. As usual, the oral sessions were supplemented by poster sessions with in-depth discussions and communications. The FEL physicists and FEL users had excellent opportunities to interact throughout the duration of the event, culminating a Joint Sessions. The year 2000 was very successful being marked by lasing with two SASE and one storage ring short-wavelength FELs, and by the first human surgery with the use of FEL, to mention but a few. The International Program Committee and chairs of the sessions had the challenging and exciting problem of selecting invived and contributed talks for the conferences and the workshop from the influx of abstracts mentioning new results and ideas. The success of the conference was determined by these contributions. Scientists from 15 countries gave 70 talks, presented 176 posters and submitted 146 papers, which are published in the present volume of proceedings.

Book Description
The emergence of the Internet has had a profound impact on society in general and on library and information services in particular. The Internet is widely used in various library and information operations including information selection, organization, preservation, processing, presentation, and delivery. The literature on the Internet and library and information services has emerged since 1990 and covers a great variety of issues. Since 1994, publications on this topic have grown dramatically. While literature before 1994 tends to be primarily descriptive, more recent works are analytical and provide valuable information on the use of the Internet in libraries. Though the amount of literature on the Internet and library and information services has exploded, little effort has been made to organize this vast body of information. This book is a research guide to the most important books and articles published on the Internet and library and information services in 1994 and 1995. The volume begins with a comprehensive essay that identifies and highlights the issues, trends, and challenges faced by library and information professionals today, as they incorporate the Internet in their work. The annotated bibliography that follows cites more than a thousand books and articles on the Internet and library and information services. The entries are grouped in topical sections to facilitate use, and the extensive indexes further allow the reader to locate specific information.
