Book Description

For more than a generation, critics and scholars have been revising and expanding the customary definition of American art. A tradition once assumed to be mainly European and oriented towards painting and sculpture has been enriched by the inclusion of other media such as ceramics, needlework, and illustration, and the work of previously marginalized groups such as Native Americans, African Americans, Latinos, and Asian Americans. Now, in a brilliant combination of original scholarship and synthesis, Frances Pohl's Framing America provides the first comprehensive survey of this new, enlarged vision of American art. Here are the many strands of North America's history and visual culture: the first contacts of the Spanish with the Aztecs and other Native Americans; the post-Revolutionary definition of nationhood; the visionary feeling for landscape and nature; the images of social and military conflict of the nineteenth century; and the tempering of the twentieth century's heady plunge into modernism by the Depression, World War II, the Cold War, and the culture wars. Framing America's consistent presentation of the resonance between art and history offers a coherent sense of the evolution of a new, generously defined conception of American art. Pohl's account is an adroitly inclusive fusion of many themes. Her discussion of the early definition of nationhood includes the traditional painters of the grand manner, West, Copley, Trumbell, and Stuart. But Stuart's portraits of George Washington, for instance, are also viewed in relation to portrayals of Washington in wood carvings, embroidery, and the vogue for "mourning pictures" after Washington's death, which create a domestic counterpoint to the more institutional portrayals. Pohl's description of the great landscape tradition of Cole, Durand, and Church shows how the optimistic assertion of a sublime sense of the American nation was accompanied by a sense of loss as the nation expanded westward. As our appreciation of the rich cultural diversity of American life has grown, our sense of American art—its sources, its motives, its possibilities—has become more varied too. Fresh and contemporary, Framing America embraces what our history can tell us about our art and what our art can tell us about our past and present. 665 illustrations, 337 in color.

5 out of 5 stars Good overview.......2007-02-28

This is a great book for a survey course in American art or for someone who wants to get into American art and just wants a general overview. The text is written in a very approachable manner, and the images that are included are of excellent quality and represent some good instances of characteristically American works. I used this book for an art history course in American art that was of a very limited time period, but the book is essentially written to cover everything in American art fairly broadly, from colonial times to the late twentieth century. A good read, and a good deal.

1 out of 5 stars Very little value for money.......2007-09-09

I found the book of very little value. Most of steel structures these days gets calculated and drawn up by computer. The assembly of the computer generated panels are dead easy and far cheaper than doing it by hand. More time should have been spent discussing the various options regarding cladding, insulation, utilities etc.

5 out of 5 stars Steel-Frame House Construction .......2007-01-16

Book was very informative and easy to understand. In plain english, I recommand this book to any one who is interseted in Steel Frame Constrction.

5 out of 5 stars Useful for beginners.......2005-09-27

Simple but with all the stuff one needs to start building steel framed houses. Pity there isn't a version with metric measurements.

5 out of 5 stars Answered My Questions..........2005-07-23

While it was not the book I expected, it does cover the topic of framing your house in steel very well. It even answers the question of "How do I hang a picture?" :-) This book is for the DIY with a small house or for professionals who want to switch to working with steel. From start to finish, it is framing in steel.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book to Teach Old House Framers New Tricks.......2002-10-16

If you want to build with steel this book not only shows you how, but also gives you manhours for your estimates!

I was impressed with the size and scope of the information here. From the types of tools needed for working with steel, to laying out the project, bacing, and construction of steel walls, roofs, even curved walls, and different types of insulation. It is well-written, and contains a CD-ROM for estimating -- complete with a database (one of the few I could find) of steel building materials and estimated manhours for installing the materials. All this for the low price of this book.

I've framed with wood for most of my life but after I've read this book I feel that I'm ready to try steel. After all, it's termite-proof, it doesn't burn too well, and offers value. I guess as more wood-framers that read this book, the more competition I'll have.

5 out of 5 stars Roof Framing by Marshall Gross.......2006-09-23

I probably have 6 books on the steel square from as far back as 1904. They are wonderful examples of just how ingenious workman were at that time. They relied on the steel square for all of their framing problems. Mr. Gross adds his modern day interpretation using the calculator and the result is a very good treatise on framing from an expert. Each new chapter builds on the last and he encourages the reader to build models as your skills progress. Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book for Your Construction Library...........2006-06-26

I rated this book at 5. It clearly explains the mathematical operations needed to configure various roof types. The Texas Instruments Calculator TI-35 used by the author to walk you through the steps,I acquired via Ebay for $7.50.The TI-35 is no longer manufactured. But Office Depot carries the new Texas Instruments BA-II which also has the necessary function keys for about $32.

3 out of 5 stars Tough to get through.......2006-01-18

I'm 125+ pages into the this book ... I agree Mr. Gross certainly knows his stuff, however this is one of the most difficult books I've ever read on ANY subject. On the plus side there are nice illustrations. Generally speaking the material roughly builds progressively.

On the negative side? I've spent hours on a single page. The problem? The book was not properly edited. Period. There are many places where terms are used but not defined. Other places terms are defined but not ILLUSTRATED. Many of the illustrations don't point out important concepts. Some references in chapter 3 says skim over chapter 4, hardly the thing I like doing (reading out of sequence). There is hardly ANY repetition in the book and to me, repetition is a reader's best friend. Readers need to be re-assured and reminded. It's not a bad thing.

I'm extremely type A, so when things aren't defined when used or are out of sequence, it causes me a problem. Yes, eventualy when you read, and re-read, and re-read and press onward, eventually yes, you get to 'see' what the author intended. I just think it shouldn't have been that tortuous.

I too found that the text on backing angle is apparently not correct. I think this book could be great if only it was formatted better and edited. I'm hoping to eventually plow through the entire book but honestly it's a ton of work. I've read through other construction books in a fraction of the time.

Part Deux...

I'm finally through the book, all 400+ pages. My initial assessment of this book still stands. The author is clearly a master roof cutter. He knows roof cutting inside and out. Some information presented is almost an epiphany. However the book suffers greatly because it did receive a comprehensive edit (and that's not the author's fault). I had great difficulty reading this book and not because the material was that complex, but because the book wasn't edited FOR THE READER. I can look beyond (no pun intended) the 4 POINT fonts used in some illustrations, the out of sequence (with text) drawings, the numerous, numerous times that the keystroke sequences were shown for calculating the tangent and secant of angles. The thing that slowed me down was the assertions made in the text that didn't have a well developed drawings, clear `proof', or much (if any) in the way of explanation. If you don't really care about knowing WHY something is the way it is, then you'll probably get through the book fairly quickly. If you really want to know why something is the way it is, then you'll probably spend lots and lots of time figuring things out. And what makes that so frustrating is that a brief explanation could have saved me (the reader) a ton of time. Reading this book was a ton of work and for a good part, needlessly so.

3 out of 5 stars all math.......2005-12-20

I hoped that this book would help with design of the roof of an addition I am building. It does not. I need ideas, rules and details for typical roof designs, this book is nearly all math. Since I am designing on CAD, I don't need to do or understand the math.

5 out of 5 stars The Best!.......2005-08-16

this book makes understanding the geometry of roofing so simple. i would highly recommend this book for any DIY type project. build roof systems as esy or as complicated as u want. all u need is this book a measure tape and a calculator.

Book Description

A painting wouldn't be the same without its frame. In fact, it can be as important as the art it surrounds. Yet the picture frame is the Cinderella of the art world, beautiful, hardworking, and frequently overlooked. The Secret Lives of Frames, inspired by the hundred-year history of Lowy, the premier fine arts services atelier in the country, celebrates the extraordinary art and artistry of the frame. In chapters such as The Making of a Framer and a Frame, The Lure of Antique Frames, and New Designs for the New Millennium, magnificent edges of all kinds come to life in vivid detail. Their history, so colorful and varied, is interwoven with the history of Lowy, an old-world company started by the legendary New York framer Julius Lowy, that marries the finest of traditional craftsmanship with new and inventive framing, restoration, and conservation techniques. Fascinating stories about frames, a lively historical survey of their evolution, and behind-the-scenes views of Lowy will transform readers into knowledgeable insiders who understand how to make their own framing choices. The Secret Life of Frames includes vintage photographs illustrating Lowy's colorful history and extensive photographs of frames and framed works of art in splendid real-life settings.

I bought this book as a gift for my husband, whose family has been in the picture frame business for over 40 years. I really bought it for the photographs, which are truly outstanding. They illustrate the beautiful, hand-carved frames of long ago, when gold truly meant genuine gold leaf. This book is almost a history of frame-making.

AT LAST! Design, construction and UBC requirements combined in one building system. Tired of books that treat wood design and construction methods as separate theoretical subjects, failing to weave them together like they are in the real world? Design and Construction of Wood Framed Buildings, by Morton Newman, not only bridges this gap, it also cites UBC requirements and constraints every step of the way. Each phase of design and construction is illustrated by one of 350 AutoCAD-generated details or explained with an example calculation. Detail drawings also interpret the intent of the Uniform Building Code. And you'll find all the information organized in the same progression in which you work - general requirements, building design loads, design examples and assembly techniques.

3 out of 5 stars A good book for the beginner........2002-02-14

This book is a good book for the beginning woodworker, or someone who wants to make a few frames for their photos.

It offers step by step instruction for building standard mitred frames, cutting mats and glass, and construction techniques.

If you want to simply make some traditional frames this book will definitely help you out.

On the down side the book hasn't been updated since 1958 and as such it's woefully out of date. It uses and describes all hand tools, some of which are not even available any longer.

There is no information about the benefits of a power mitre saw, radial arm saw, or any other power tool which would greatly help in making frames.

Additionally I was hoping that the book would outline some non traditional frames, such as mortice and tenon jointed frames. It did not, only standard mitred frames.

Overall I would recommend this book for someone totally unfamiliar with frame making. But if you have a basic understanding of woodworking and understand mitre cuts then this isn't the book for you.

Excellent book for the beginner (me!). Clear and concise. Excellent step-by-step instructions with photos for each and every step. This book covers all aspects of frame construction, painting, mats, glass-cutting and usage. A great book to trigger your own ideas to create custom frames.

Drawbacks: Original publication is 1958, and the tools and techniques used are pretty old (e.g., use of a hand saw and miter box versus an electric miter saw or radial arm saw). Photos are all black and white, so some detail is missing.

ASIN: 0865715084

Book Description

Many natural building methods rely upon the use of post and beam frame structures that are then in-filled with straw, cob, cordwood, or more conventional wall materials. But traditional timber framing employs the use of finely crafted jointing and wooden pegs, requiring a high degree of craftsmanship and training, as well as much time and expense. However, there is another way . . .

Timber Framing for the Rest of Us describes the timber framing methods used by most contractors, farmers and owner-builders-methods that use modern metal fasteners, special screws and common sense building principles to accomplish the same goal in much less time. And while there are many good books on traditional timber framing, this is the first to describe in depth these more common fastening methods. The book includes everything an owner-builder needs to know about building strong and beautiful structural frames from heavy timbers, including:
the historical background of timber framing
crucial design and structural considerations
procuring timbers-including different woods and recycled materials
foundations, roofs and in-filling considerations
the common fasteners

A detailed case study of a timber frame project from start to finish completes this practical and comprehensive guide, along with a useful appendix of span tables and a bibliography.

Highly illustrated, this book enables "the rest of us" to build like the professionals and will appeal to owner-builders, contractors and architects alike.

Rob Roy is a former contractor with 11 previous books to his credit. He has been utilizing timber framing techniques for the past 25 years in the construction of homes, as well as in the numerous outbuildings at Earthwood Building School which he founded in 1981 with his wife, Jaki. He is most recently the author of Cordwood Building: The State of the Art (New Society, 2003).

3 out of 5 stars Not enough info, spam.......2007-07-12

While this book does cover the general building process, I feel it does not go into enough detail. While talking about timbers and larger pieces of wood, the charts in the end are all for regular 2x wood. There are so many references to other works where info can be found, that the whole read felt like one large advertisement (many for the author's other publications). Needs more detailed sketches, diagrams, and important detail pictures, and less useless pictures taken from too far away to be useful.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource!.......2007-06-10

The book is very informative and helpful. Rob Roy's writing style makes it easy to follow. Not having any experience in building,(being female, that happens) I could still understand all of it, but a little background (even building a doghouse!) might have helped in truly getting the most out of the material.

5 out of 5 stars Rob Roy is a powerhouse proponent for alternative building!.......2004-12-29

This book is written in a very easy to follow style. The concepts all come across as clearly and the illustations do. There is loads of informative content for the alternative builder who is concerned with incorporating natural building methods such as straw bale construction, cordwood masonry, and cob building into thier home. What makes this book stand apart from other texts on the subject is its emphasis on the use metal fasteners to achieve a strong well built frame. While most other timber framing books use joinery that requires a high degree of craftmanship this book uses simpler techniques that the non-professional can learn quickly. It is great for the "do-it-yourselfers" out there that want a book that makes sense! Highly recomended.

3 out of 5 stars Some great nuggets of info but..............2004-08-22

Some great nuggets of info but fails to deliver the "How-to" that the title hints at. I was dissappointed and am now looking for a "cookbook" or "how-to" style book.

I can not recommend this book.
