Book Description

What works in education? How do we know? How can teachers find out? How can educational research find its way into the classroom? How can we apply it to help our individual students? Questions like these arise in most schools, and busy educators often don't have time to find the answers. Robert J. Marzano, Debra J. Pickering, and Jane E. Pollock have examined decades of research findings to distill the results into nine broad teaching strategies that have positive effects on student learning:

* Identifying similarities and differences.
* Summarizing and note taking.
* Reinforcing effort and providing recognition.
* Homework and practice.
* Nonlinguistic representations.
* Cooperative learning.
* Setting objectives and providing feedback.
* Generating and testing hypotheses.
* Questions, cues, and advance organizers.

This list is not new. But what is surprising is finding out what a big difference it makes, for example, when students learn how to take good notes, work in groups, and use graphic organizers. The authors provide statistical effect sizes and show how these translate into percentile gains for students, for each strategy. And each chapter presents extended classroom examples of teachers and students in action; models of successful instruction; and many "frames," rubrics, organizers, and charts to help teachers plan and implement the strategies.

This booklet provides vastly more instruction on the nitty-gritty of what teachers need in the classroom. Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars Marzano is a must read........2007-09-10

I wish I would have heard of Robert Marzano my first year of teaching. This book explains the research behind the classroom instruction and gives you ideas of what you should do. This is a great book to have with the "Handbook for Classroom Instruction that Works".

5 out of 5 stars Great resource!.......2007-05-12

After hearing so much in teacher in-services about "Marzano strategies" I decided to check out his work myself. I was struck by the simple fact they are not his strategies as people talk about. Instead, they are research supported strategies that he and other authors/researchers have compiled and shrunk down into some user-friendly nuggets. The book is very easy to read, provides ample sources of real research, and is practical. The layout is great and the content superb. It is an excellent resource for teachers looking to improve their instruction based on reliable and somewhat traditional methods.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Resource for Educators.......2007-03-17

Provides tangible ideas that any educator can take into the classroom. I would also recommend any book by Kelly Gallagher.

5 out of 5 stars Marzano's Classroom Instruction That Works.......2007-01-09

An excellent text for the first time teacher. Provides techniques and examples to assist in implementation of the techniques. Gives you more teaching tools for your toolbox. Easy to read, taking one chapter at a time. I highly recommend the book.

Book Description

Exemplary teacher research has established that explicit teaching plays a vital role in the K-8 classroom, with particular benefits for struggling readers. This book is a practical resource for explaining reading to students who do not learn to read easily. Identified are 22 major skills and strategies associated with vocabulary development, comprehension, word recognition, and fluency. Ways to explain each skill or strategy are illustrated with abundant concrete examples, which teachers can use as starting points for developing lessons tailored to the needs, strengths, and interests of their own students. The book also shows how to move from the teacher's explanation to the student's independent use of new concepts, and how to embed explicit teaching within a context of rich, engaging literacy experiences.

5 out of 5 stars Analytical explanation of reading.......2007-01-04

I am a tutor for third and fourth graders (employed by the school) and have found this book to be priceless in explaining the strategies of reading to 8, 9 and ten year olds - my target audience. The book is structured well and offers many examples of how to help struggling readers learn the "secrets" of good readers. After looking at several other 'Reading Comprehension' books, I chose this one based on the TOC and the foreward. It has proven to REALLY help me clarify each objective and teach the invisible process of active reading to my students. I'm very excited about the book and what it has to offer. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2006-02-20

I bought this book last year from Amazon, after being recommended it by a resource literacy teacher. It is very helpful to me, a classroom teacher. I would recommend it as great value for any teacher. I recently had the pleasure of hearing G Duffy speak at a day's conference here in New Zealand. He was so clear, so able to show the recent history of the teaching of reading, and how we might go about showing students the skills of comprehension, and what good readers do. In this book, G Duffy helps teachers model what good readers do. He is realistic and down to earth.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Literacy Coaches.......2005-05-04

This is a wonderful book to use while working with teachers in your building. Use it as a resource for yourself or share it with teachers to support what you are saying or modeling in their classrooms. After you have identified the strategy or skill the students are having trouble with, locate the skill in the index. Then read through the pages as Dr. Duffy describes the conceptual understanding that must be in place for the students to learn the skill. He also outlines how to introduce the skill, model the thinking, scaffold towards independence, apply it in reading and writing, and determine how to know if the lesson was successful. Some topic categories are vocabulary, comprehension strategies, word recognition, and fluency.

5 out of 5 stars Individual chapters cogently provide examples.......2003-10-14

Gerald G. Duffy is a former classroom teacher and professor emeritus at Michigan State University. He draws upon his many years of experience and his considerable expertise in Explaining Reading: A Resource For Teaching Concepts, Skills, And Strategies to provide the reader with a solid guide for aiding in their teaching literacy to students who are slow to absorb the skill. Individual chapters cogently provide examples and ideas for explaining vocabulary, teaching word recognition, comprehension strategies, and a great deal more. Explaining Reading is highly recommended as an excellent and detailed advice guide -- especially for classroom teachers and home schoolers involved in a literacy instructional program.

      This book presents the concept of ethical knowledge as it is revealed, as it is challenged, and as it may be used in schools. The book combines empirical expressions of teachers' beliefs and practices with a discussion of the connections between the moral dimensions of schooling and applied professional ethics in teaching: The Ethical Teacher is for teachers and teacher educators and for those who conduct research about their worlds.

      This market-leading book provides comprehensive coverage of behavior management concepts and techniques and presents them in a versatile and practical manner for teachers. This new edition has been shortened and streamlined and chapters flow step-by-step through an actual behavior analysis, using classroom-based examples and practices firmly grounded in research. Content is presented in the order of decision-making by: 1) a teacher who has a student exhibiting challenging behavior in class; or, 2) a student who needs to execute a behavior-change project. The text covers: identifying target behavior, collecting and graphing data, functional assessment, experimental design, arranging antecedents and consequences, generalizing behavior change and discusses the importance of ethical considerations in using applied behavior analysis in the classroom. Inservice Teachers and Special Educators.

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars For Advanced Study.......2007-10-01

      I am currently taking a Graduate Level Advanced Behavior Analysis (ABA) class at a local university. This book was a requirement for my class and this class is required for graduation. This class was my first Special Education course and this book is definitely not for someone who doesn't understand reward/punishment with regards to behavior. The book is comprehensive but should not be used for someone looking to "gain a little insight" into ABA. This book encompasses all of ABA. If you are ABA certified, this book will help you "refresh" on the information you've already learned.

      4 out of 5 stars Good for Special Educators.......2007-03-08

      I had to buy this textbook last year, as I was getting my teaching endorsement in Special Education. It is a good text, although mostly only useful if you are studying this for ceritification (I haven't used since I've been teaching).

      5 out of 5 stars Teach yourself to teach kids!.......2006-07-20

      This detailed how to book offers a variety of technical interventions and some neccessary theory surrounding Applied Behavior Analysis. It also presents a variety of explanations and examples for classroom use. I really enjoyed the read and highly recommend it. My students also found it usefull!

      5 out of 5 stars For learning about ABA and relating to school you cannot beat this book..........2006-05-13

      My title states it all. The 7th edition trumps the phenomenal 6th edition in it's inclusion of IDEA 2004/NCLB concepts. It is well worth the price difference between this book and most ABA books.

      4 out of 5 stars technical lingo.......2006-03-17

      The only thing I really did not like about this book was it had a lot of technical verbage that tends to put one to sleep. The examples and scenarios were helpful in presenting the content.

      2 out of 5 stars overpriced textbook.......2007-09-18

      The paper of this book is of mediocre quality. I splashed some water on a corner of a page and wiped it immediately; yet the page shriveled and the print faded nearly to illegibility.

      The content itself is reasonably organized, but doesn't break any new ground.

      5 out of 5 stars Classroom Management for Middle and High School Teachers (7th Edition).......2007-06-11

      I found this book to help a lot in preparing a behavior management plan. This was an area I felt school was weak in my studies at Georgia State. State has a great program, but this was an area I needed more help at. This book is filled with great examples of how other teachers have handled problem situations. Was worth the money.

      5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-01-10

      This book contains a lot of information that is particularly useful for new teachers. It also provides useful examples of how to best set up and maintain your classroom and students. Great book.

      5 out of 5 stars A must read for all entry level teachers.......2007-01-03

      This book is written in a common sense manner. The authors take the reader from the planning stage to implementing then they show you how to maintain management in the classroom so that the teacher will have a successful year. The authors also included nice case studies and checklists to better prepare you for the upcoming school year. I definitely recommend this book to all teachers or education majors.

      5 out of 5 stars Nice tool for new teachers........2006-03-28

      This book is a practical resource for new secondary teachers. The authors discuss classroom set-up, student resources, and behavior problems. There are many ideas ready for application in your own classroom and no boring or unnecessary narratives that most classroom management books have.

      5 out of 5 stars Easy Read.......2007-07-31

      This book was easy to read and gave excellent examples and case studies. it was short and to the point and didn't drag on an idea. It was also informative in that it gave you when it was the author's bias or actual studied facts.

      5 out of 5 stars Graduate student review of Program Evaluation.......2006-03-14

      This book is used as a text book in my graduate class on evaluation in Instructional Technology. The book is clear, easy to understand, thorough and a good "primer" on evaluation.

      5 out of 5 stars The best evaluation survey text.......2005-02-24

      This text surveys evaluation theory and practice in a manner that is easy to understand and teach. It's appropriate for undergraduate or graduate work in performance evaluation. The authors do an excellent job of reviewing the history and key literature. They also briefly explain popular methodologies and discuss different approaches, such as objective and holistic. The book includes case study material that highlights processes, advantages, drawbacks, and potential problems of evaluation efforts. The authors avoid consulting hype and focus on building the evaluation body of knowledge. An update with Fitzpatrick listed as the first author is now available and also is excellent.

      5 out of 5 stars All models evaluation book.......2000-08-05

      Even though it is not an Evaluation Manual which sometimes comes in handy for conducting evaluation studies, it is a very good book. I have used it for my Masters Program (at Universidad del Valle de Guatemala) and found it very useful both for the theoretical and for the practical parts.It covers all major models tracing their origins. I plan on using it for my Doctoral Program, at Universidad de Costa Rica.

      4 out of 5 stars Very Thorough.......2000-02-05

      I've been using this book as a resource for evaluating programs at our college and for my doctoral research. The book is well organized and contains several examples and paradigms with which to evaluate programs in both govermental and corporate settings. Expensive book but one that you'll keep handy!

      5 out of 5 stars Classroom Assesssment Review.......2006-08-07

      Excellent book! Angelo was very clear and concise in guiding teachers through the assessment process.

      5 out of 5 stars CATs for the classroom.......2005-08-14

      The text was used in a course through UW Stout and it is a very good resource for methods that can be used to assess learners progress towards a goal. Great tool to have on the bookshelf!

      5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2004-08-03

      Cross and Angelo is a classic text that all professors should have in their teaching and learning library. The techniques are concrete, simple, and powerful. This is not a theory book but truly a handbook of techniques that will not only improve your teaching but more importantly improve your students' learning.

      4 out of 5 stars Sourcebook Of Best Teaching Techniques.......2002-07-24

      Although the title is certainly somewhat misleading, this is a good sourcebook of the best teaching techniques culled from a wide range of instructional situations. There is something here for everyone in every situation, elementary ed, high school, community college, and yes, those of us at universities too.

      I can't imagine many educators who will not find something to improve their teaching effectiveness in this book. A great advantage is that each technique is presented individually so that you can literally pick and choose and then try them out without having to read extensively to understand the potential for each.

      If you teach (this is my 25th year teaching college), I recommend two books once you have spent a few years at it and want to continue to improve your effectiveness....this one and Nobel Laureate Richard Feynman's "Six Easy Pieces"

      4 out of 5 stars Both more and less than I expected.......2001-10-18

      The rating of 4 stars I'm giving this is a combination of 3 stars and 5 stars. Some of the techniques presented are worth the 5 stars; the lack of actual forms or examples as administered is the 3 stars. There are many examples of each technique, but all are given as narrative descriptions, not as copies of the assessment form or handout.

      One thing potential buyers should be aware of: THIS IS NOT A BOOK ABOUT GIVING TESTS. If you are looking for how to write tests, how to test your students, how to design exams, try James Popham or something similar. This is a book full of ways to survey your students to determine whether they are ready to learn, whether they are ready to absorb more information, whether they are understanding the material - but not tests.

      Let me give you examples of the techniques I found immediately useful:
      Technique #1: Background Knowledge Probe. This is to be given at the first class meeting, to see whether your students know what they're supposed to before they start your class. Here's how I administered it: I teach a course called "Quantitative Applications Software." It's mainly about using Microsoft Excel and related spreadsheets, and it's primarily for business majors to fill their core computer requirement. I prepared a survey form which had about 20 questions in all, with three columns to check off: "Know how to do this" (have studies it, remember it, can calculate it), "Have heard of this" (the concept is familiar but I don't remember how to figure it) and "Not familiar with this." The items to rate were divided into 3 categories: math knowledge (Square roots, exponents, order of operations); business concepts (compound interest, present value, mortgages, multi-state sales taxes) and Excel concepts - which is what the students would be learning, but some already know (built-in statistical functions, calculating loan payments, setting up invoicing systems, working with multiple files.) The students filled out this survey anonymously, so no one had to be embarrassed, and then after scanning the surveys, I announced that people who were unsure of the math concepts could get tutoring, people who knew all the Excel concepts might be able to test out of the course, and for everybody else, I would have an idea of how much time to spend explaining background math before introducing an Excel function.

      Technique #25: Student-generated test questions. Students have to generate both questions and answers. This allows you to see what they think is the most important material they've studied so far, whether they've done only the homework or also studied handouts and their lecture notes, and whether they can organize their thinking. This one should be done only after you've already given the students at least one exam or a few quizzes, so that they know the length and difficulty of questions you expect.

      On the other hand, many of the techniques are not very useful for my subject area - some are writing-intensive and don't fit in with a course that is mostly hands-on lab work; some require students to list pros and cons of something - not necessarily feasible in a course where there's a fixed minimum of material that MUST be covered, whether the students like it or not. More useful, I suspect, for classes where there are issues and current events and discussions, than for computer science basics.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars Different Brains, Different Learners.......2005-08-28

        A great book for teachers as well as parents. It helps to understand what is or may be happening in the brain. I like the recommendations given on ways we can help alleviate stressful events under given conditions.

        2 out of 5 stars Lacking.......2003-01-21

        This book lacks the depth it seems to promise. Some of the illustrations are lacking. There is not enough meat to help anyone with special needs learners. I would suggest you look elsewhere. I was greatly disappointed since the majority of work by Jensen is wonderful.

        5 out of 5 stars Essential reading for all teachers.......2001-09-10

        Eric Jensen knows the needs of busy teachers and has the gift in helping them to utilize up-to-date knowledge in brain studies. Here it is applied to identifying 10 types of different learners: 1. impulsive ones with ADD, 2. resigned with learned helplessness, 3. challenged reader with dyslexia, 4. argumentative with oppositional disorder, 5. frustrated with learning delayed, 6. hyperactive, 7. with auditory-processing deficits, 8. out of control, 9. the demotivated with chronic threat and distress, and 10. depressed and troubled.

        You are given a pre-test and a post-test of 10 unique students to see if you can identify the patterns of symptoms rather than isolated behaviors. There are many color-prints of corresponding brain-images and graphic charts that facilitate learning. Brief summaries of treatment methods, supplementary resources on books, websites and organizations are given on each type. All teachers should acquire such general background knowledge so that the unqiue needs and gifts of students can be respected.
