Book Description
Val's Blog "A tremendously useful field guide specifically written for developers down in the trenches...waiting for the killer solution..."
Web users are getting tired of the traditional web experience. They get frustrated losing their scroll position; they get annoyed waiting for refresh; they struggle to reorient themselves on every new page. And the list goes on. With asynchronous JavaScript and XML, known as "Ajax," you can give them a better experience. Once users have experienced an Ajax interface, they hate to go back. Ajax is new way of thinking that can result in a flowing and intuitive interaction with the user.
Ajax in Action helps you implement that thinking--it explains how to distribute the application between the client and the server (hint: use a "nested MVC" design) while retaining the integrity of the system. You will learn how to ensure your app is flexible and maintainable, and how good, structured design can help avoid problems like browser incompatibilities. Along the way it helps you unlearn many old coding habits. Above all, it opens your mind to the many advantages gained by placing much of the processing in the browser. If you are a web developer who has prior experience with web technologies, this book is for you.

Shines over the rest ..........2007-04-23
Somehow I got hold of my first book on AJAX: Head Rush Ajax (Head First) and sure it gave me an intro to XMLHttpRequest - but that's all it did. I browsed through the informal/conversational writings of the book in one evening. And wondered, is there all to it? The current web-world is spinning around Web2.0 and AJAX technology - there must be more than that. Then I went back to the store and picked this book up - I am glad I did. It covers many more areas that an AJAX programmer must equip himself/herself, topics relating to MVC pattern, working with the server side programs and performance, security, as well as the basic topic: building standalone RIA using CSS, DOM and DHTML.
This one definitely shines over the rest on the topic, however, for a hands-on programmer (that's me), I would appreciate more code samples will help.
Good At What it Does--But Not About AJAX.......2007-04-04
Finally, I am so happy to see what some other reviewers say. This book is not really that much about AJAX. I feel that I have wasted my AJAX budget. Sure, there is lots of valuable stuff here but the percentage of this book that is about AJAX proper.
I would say that 5 of the 13 chapters are about AJAX but that of course means that 8 are not at all about AJAX. At the same time, I got "Pragmatic AJAX" by the always funny Ben Galbraith. If you need to focus on AJAX--read Pragmatic AJAX.
Ajax in Action.......2007-03-12
It does more than introduce ajax to the reader. It also covers a little bit of programming methodology and some things to keep in mind when writing even a simple application. Overall it is a good book, but not if you are new to programming and especially if you are new to JavaScript.
It's About Web Architecture... Buy it for that reason.......2007-03-05
I also will agree with the comment: "Principles of Web architecture and design... and a few words about Ajax". However, I find it to be an incredible book. It goes in depth about the Model View Controller, Design Patterns, and Refactoring. All terms that I did not know in depth. I actually skipped over a lot of the how-to AJAX stuff and read about the design theories. I can't wait to read it again.
The Appendix on how JavaScript works is worth the price of the book alone. NOW I understand how that crazy prototype works.
Incorrectly named and promoted........2007-02-27
I agree with one of the reviewers (D. Klebanov) who suggested to re-name this book to "Principles of Web architecture and design... and a few words about Ajax"
I wanted a book that focuses strictly on Ajax functionality. This book is often vague and verbose and lacks unity.
It feels like the Authors took the Ajax concept and stretched it onto the set of many different topics. Some topics are pertinent to Ajax others are just subtly related.
I did find a lot of useful information in this book, but for the most part those things had nothing to do with Ajax. Just general strategies of web development. So I give it 2 stars because it is well written, although rather verbose. But really this is like ordering an apple and getting an orange and then trying to write a review on how oranges are also good.

Book Description
Prototype and Scriptaculous are libraries that extend standard Ajax. They make it easier to program Ajax and provide powerful features like drag and drop and animation. In this book, developers learn by playing and see how the libraries work in the real world.
As experience with Ajax increases, developers want the standard Ajax capabilities they repeatedly use to be preprogrammed for them--and that's exactly what Ajax libraries do for them. They reduce the pain of handling cross-browser inconsistencies, they add useful language features, and provide sophisticated functionality. Of these, Prototype is the most popular JavaScript and Ajax framework for low-level user interface features such as animation, drag and drop, and pre-built widgets. Together, they free the developer up to concentrate on building the application. They make a rich user experience easy to achieve.
This book guides the reader through the Prototype and Scriptaculous libraries feature-by-feature. In just 350 pages, readers will find over 100 small working examples to help them explore the libraries. As well, they will develop a web-based image gallery that teacher them how to use Prototype and Scriptaculous in the real-world.
Customer Reviews:
Top-notch tome.......2007-06-25
Javascript has exploded onto the web development scene in the last few years, and powers much of the web 2.0 and Ajax revolution. Every web developer now needs to know how to do common Ajax tasks. Thankfully, Prototype and Scriptaculous In Action makes it both easy and enjoyable.
This is a comprehensive book. The size (510 pages) was initially intimidating, but Prototype and Scriptaculous In Action is exceedingly well written and a genuine pleasure to read. The thorough and thoughtful organization of the book provides some real structure to the discussion, making complex subjects easily digestible. This is the defacto bible of Prototype and Scriptaculous, and these days I turn to this book more than anything else on my shelf.
The book is divided up into four multi-chapter parts, any of which could stand on it's own as a definitive guide. The chapters are full of useful examples, and there's strong emphasis given to migrating existing sites to Prototype and Scriptaculous, which is a major plus. You could turn to any section of the book and immediately see how to inject some new behavior into your existing application, but if you take the time to read from cover-to-cover you'll be rewarded with some deep understanding of both the libraries and Javascript itself.
I'll summarize the four parts of the book:
Part 1, Getting Started, introduces the Prototype and Scriptaculous libraries, focusing heavily on Prototype and Ajax. There's a lot of information on re-designing an existing site for Ajax. Two full chapters are devoted to Prototype's Ajax features. You can get up and running VERY quickly after glancing through these chapters. There's also a lot of depth, and consideration is given to the pervasive effects Ajax has on architectural issues and the new ways that an application will have to manage HTTP traffic.
Part 2, Scriptaculous Quickly, covers effects, controls and drag-n-drop. This is hands-down the best Scriptaculous documentation currently available, anywhere. The core effects are explored and tweaked, and there's lot of very practical examples demonstrating some of the niftiest stuff, like running effects in parallel versus sequentially. And the drag-and-drop coverage is incredibly clear, making it easy, almost trivial, to implement. The Scriptaculous coverage is indispensable, and you'll return to it again and again if you implement Scriptaculous-enabled pages.
Part 3, Prototype in Depth, explores Prototype's Javascript-oriented features. There's a fantastic chapter on functions contexts, and the discussion of closures is one of the best I've seen. There's a lot of information about Javascript fundamentals, and how Prototype can be used to implement inheritance, address arrays, and manipulate the DOM in the browser.
And finally, Part 4 Advanced Topics, has two unrelated chapters. The first chapter overhauls an example app, giving it a Prototype and Scriptaculous makeover. The last chapter is about integration with Ruby on Rails. Prototype was initially written as the Ajax interface to Rails, so there's some strong integration.
As a long-time enterprise web developer, dealing with Javascript has always been a chore. But now I actually (gasp) look forward to tasks that involve Javascript. I'm a convert, and I have Prototype and Scriptaculous in Action to thank.
Excellent.......2007-05-22
I wrote a longer review that Amazon has apparently lost. Oh well. This is an excellent book, very well written. The authors are the rarest kind of technical author: they can actually construct prose that is pleasant to read, not deadly boring, but which works well as a reference book later. The book's organized thoughtfully--it's certainly much more than just an API reference. There's also quite a lot of general advanced Javascript information here, too.
There's at least one other book on these libraries in production from Pragmatic Programmers. If you're considering that, I strongly suggest downloading the sample chapters of both books and comparing. The Crane book is much more appealing to me (not to mention it's available now, not in six months).
Basic libraries coverage with a good example application........2007-04-19
This book lacked detailed coverage of the programming techniques and advanced topics of prototype and scriptaculous. The authors covered the basics by discussing only the API's of the libraries (more attention was given to scriptaculous API's, even though its usage is obvious and prototype API's are more extensive). With 500 pages and the libraries as the title, I expected details about the inner workings of the API's and discussions about its usages/ applications. Instead, 150 pages were devoted to verbose repetitive coverage of scriptaculous' API, which could easily have fitted into 50 pages at most. ALL of the info on scriptaculous could easily have been read online at its wiki site - the book provided no further insight (ch. 5 is especially useless)! Prototype's coverage was decent, but lacked details on several parts of its API. Although prototype and scriptaculous are tightly integrated with Rails, there was only 1 chapter devoted to its discussion, which served more like an overview than a usage guide. Based on content on the libraries alone, I would give this book 3 stars. However, if you're in need of an example application, then it may deserve 4 stars. This book provides a good example of applying prototype's ajax and scriptaculous web 2.0 techniques to a photo gallery website. It shows the advantages these libraries have over plain javascript and dhtml. The extra 100 pages wasted on scriptaculous would better serve Rails' RJS templates or a more complete/ thorough discussion of prototype. Of course it can be argued that the book is not titled, "Prototype, Scriptaculous, and Rails in Action," but it should be.

A must for invitations!.......2005-01-10
I run a small stationery and invite business (Quite the InviteTM) and have found this to be an invaluable tool for my business. This book covers all possibilities. Not everyone has use for this book, but anyone who does lots of entertaining or needs to make sure their invites follow protocol, this is a must.
the definitive guide to elegant stationery.......2003-04-18
A lovely reference book on formal and semi-formal stationery, calling cards, and the proper wording for invitations. Filled with enthusiasm after reading the book, I went into my local stationers to price some of this fancy stuff and concluded that I was better off with a computer and printer. Not that I wouldn't love engraved letter sheets, monogrammed notes, and house stationery, but it would run into the hundreds of dollars. And that's just for the letter sheets and engraved envelopes! However, it's wonderful to press my nose against the window and dream about spending my children's inheritance on engraved correspondence cards!
The sections on the content of one's correspondence were the weakest part of the book. The four-line formula condolence notes did not strike me as particularly consoling, for instance. "Miss Manners' Basic Training: Communication" and other books specific to letter writing give much better tips on how to compose meaningful messages. But Crane's remains the lofty goal for elegant correspondence.
A desk reference with attitude........2000-12-27
As someone who got really intrigued by parchment and fancy fonts when I got married, I'm rather surprised that the only version of this book still in print is the "Blue Book of Wedding Stationery." After all, one can have a hoity-toity paper fetish without being engaged.
After a few years of hunting, I found a used of this book in a small used bookstore in downtown Seattle, and I may never give it up. Even though the editor (Feinberg is not credited as the author, and there's an introduction by Stanley Marcus) is bossy, unrelenting on some conventions and is essentially pushing Crane's engraving trade every step of the way, I'm still drawn in by the ellegance of "proper" social stationery. It's easy to take Feinberg's advice with a grain of salt: he seems to resent popular etiquette mavens who state that an extensive "stationery wardrobe" is not necessary, and that the most formal invitations are handwritten.
The introduction of this book gets into the history of paper-making and engraving, and the beginning of each section gets into either the history of the custom being described or stories behind that particular piece of social stationery.
I'm a tad disappointed by the section on calling cards -- a small fluffy book I saw on the subject once got a bit more into detail on what it meant if a particular corner was folded -- but the fact that Feinberg addresses the subject at all wins a point with me.
Other topics covered are the basic "stationery wardrobe" for both men and women, invitations to various occasions, wedding stationery (of course), greeting cards and announcements, "professional stationery," forms of address and a brief history of Crane's. The book includes an occasional example of famous social stationery, such as a 1942 Christmas card from the President and Mrs. Roosevelt.
I've been online for ten years, but I still love sending and receiving paper letters. "Crane's Blue Book of Stationery: The Styles and Etiquette of Letters, Notes and Inivitations," snooty though it is, nurtures that love like few other books have.
Chapter headings include:
1. The Essence of Etiquette
2. Social Stationery
3. Invitations to Social Occasions
4. Wedding Stationery
5. Greeting Cards, Social Announcements, and Social Correspondence
6. Business and Professional Stationery
7. Calling Cards
8. Appendix

Abundance Course, Release Technique and Going Clear.......2007-09-16
There are some people that figure they are going to read a book, once, and somehow get all that they can from it. I've witnessed those that have the same attitude towards other courses and learning experiences in their life.
Letting go of you mind and neurosis is just not going to be that simple a job. This book is very detailed, short and to the point. I also have the Abundance Course, and have spent over 100 hours working with it. My time investment in this type of practice is conservatively well over 3500 hours. It is not to be taken lightly, or that is exactly what you will get out of it.
The Biology of Emoitions, www.gocure.com, Frontal Lobes Supercharge, www.neilslade.com, and www.selfhelprecovery.com, are free and inexpensive resources that I recommend to get fully versed in the brain, neurosis, and methods to find your path to letting go.
Both the Release Technique and the Sedona Method sites have tons of free to inexpensive downloads to start one on the way to clearing the neurosis. These alone can account for at least a hundred hours of releasing, if one is willing to do the necessary work.
Both the Abundance Course and book, as well as the Sedona Method are based on the techniques and prior work of Lester Levenson. The Abundance Course is more body oriented. The Sedona Method, Hale Dwoskin/Lester Levenson, is more oriented to releasing from the neck up.
One has to learn how to feel the feel of releasing and letting go. They are just feelings, and are not you, so you can choose to let them to. The above mentioned resources can aid in getting the gut feel to this process, and use the Sedona or the Release Technique.
The real power to this is repetition, or the Repeat Technique, which is not mentioned in either of these methods. That means that you can release on an abuser, simply by repeating the name. One can get more from the releasing course, by repeating the phrases over and over, and/or repeating the recordings that lead you to release. It takes repetition to unlock the deeper charge on events in the life. It takes repetition to peal away and discharge, one by one, each event to the anchor or core at the beginning of the chain of events that are connected to each other.
This book is an excellent way to learn how to do this. It shows exactly how to take apart the mind on a piece by piece basis, and to start the tears to rolling that will discharge the neurosis. It is simple, yet it does take time and dedicated work.
If you don't plan on working, and spending a lot of time, then keep your apathy, grief, fear, lust, anger, and pride. Go read Tony Robins, and be motivated for a few minuets. Then go back to sleep.

Not abundant at all.......2007-09-03
Don't believe every review you see. They are written mostly for people that never reviewed anything else and during a very short period of time. Very fishy indeed... I have tried to read the book. An absolutely bore. Don't waste time and money in that. I also purchased the audio. Very good for sleeping. It's all hot air.
The Abundance Course: The Lazy Way to Riches, Health and Happiness.......2007-07-26
This book by Larry Crane is most valuable. Clearly written, it guides the reader to feel, accept, and release the blocks to abundance by totally allowing the feelings that are wanting to be accepted.
Thus, I practice giving myself 100% approval instead of mistreating myself by disapproving of whatever I am feeling and pushing the feelings back into my subconscious where they wreak havoc.
This is the roadmap to courageousness, acceptance, and finally, to peace. The practices still the mind as the feelings are allowed, embraced, and ultimately released, leaving me free. It is a simple, constant practice that works absolutely.
Spiritual Without Being Spiritual.......2007-06-01
I was skeptical about this at first, thinking it was just another New Agey "get in touch with your feelings" type of thing. I went beyond my doubts and discovered that the Abundance Course is right on. It's spiritual without being preachy or advocating any kind of religion. Basically, you're cleaning up your mental, emotional and spiritual garbage in an easy way, which allows more goodness to come to you.
In just a couple of weeks, I have seen huge changes manifest in my life since working with the Release Technique, from financial gains to improvements in relationships. Here's an example: One of the beginning goals was to manifest $100 or more by releasing only. Five days later, I received an unexpected check from an unexpected source for $113. That's just the beginning of what we can do by releasing. I intend to make this a lifetime practice and look forward to many gains on all levels as a result.
To me, the point of life is to be the best that I can be. The Release Technique taught in this book certainly provides a great tool to get on the right path. By releasing, you can attract abundance in ALL areas of life, whether it's spiritual enlightenment, quality friends, money, health, you name it.
At this point, I am convinced that any other abundance or self-improvement course is simply a detour to the final destination. Larry Crane's Abundance Course propels the serious reader along the straight and narrow path to goal achievement. Instead of dwelling on the "ifs," "buts," and "whys," enjoy your abundance today by learning and applying the Release Technique.
I recommend this to just about everyone I know, both online and off line, because results happen FAST -- and that's what we're all looking for!

These ten classic stories from four of America's greatest authors of the 19th and early 20th century were selected for their literary importance as well as their dramatic oral qualities. The stories include Mark Twain's "The One-Million Pound Bank Note," "A Visit to Niagara," and "A Mysterious Visit;" Stephen Crane's "The Blue Hotel;" Ambrose Bierce's "The Eyes of the Panther;" and Jack London's "The Love of Life" and "To Build a Fire."

Negative, negative, negative.......2007-06-11
I bought this selection because of the title, which credits the stories to Mark Twain. I would have loved ten of his stories! Unfortunately, the selections for inclusion (other than Mr. Twain's) were some of the poorest examples of American literature that I have read. They weren't even good irony; they were just depressing. I'm sure there could be a great collection of American short stories; these were certainly not that.
Wonderful! .......2007-05-12
I bought this and a few other books on CD for my husband who has a bit of dislexia (sp?) and has trouble reading. He was so engrossed in the stories that if he were near the end of one, he would sit in the driveway and listen until it was done. So then, by proxy, I know all of the stories and it seems like a wonderful 'read'. This is a perfect gift for someone who enjoys fine adventure literature by fine authors.
Successful Gift.......2006-12-13
I purchased this for my father along with a selection of other audio books. He reported that he liked this one the best. Apparently the selection of stories was excellent, and the reading was clear and expressive.

Customer Reviews:
this was the book..........2007-07-31
This book changed everything. I was too young to read it, according to the librarian in the paper crane filled library. I wanted to know what the older kids knew, what they found out by reading this book, and why they folded paper cranes and hung them everywhere. This book, for me, was like a starter course in compassion and a glimpse of a larger world, and the real significance of history. I would reccomend this book to everyone. Like all truly great children's literature it can affect you if you read it as I did, at six years old, and it can affect you just as deeply if you read it as an adult.
The book that I refused to not finish.......2007-06-05
This book of Sadako gave hope, love, happiness and sadness into my eyes and heart. The discriptive paragraphs and emotional pictures kept me hooked. I don't know of anyone on earth who would have so much hope and faith in herself. Sadako set a goal, and tried her hardest to finsih, it, she was so determined, poeple finished her goal for her. I admire Sadako and all of her faith and hope. Not for one second did she lose hope. But now I know of the disease, and how much Sadako was admired.
Sadako .......2007-04-11
I liked the book Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes .In the story Sadako makes the relay team, but when she is running she gets a dizzy spell. So her parents take her to the hospital and she has leukemia .From reading the story,I learned that there was an atomic bomb and leukemia .After reading the story,I felt sad because one day Sadako was making a paper crane and she fell asleep and never woke up. I would recommend this book to my friends because it teaches friendship.
Sadako.......2007-04-11
I like the book, Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. In the story, Sadako is a very good runner she loves to run. One day Sadako was running she started getting dizzy. From reading the story, I learned that when you start to feel dizzy or something you need to tell someone and don't give up hope. After reading the story, I felt sad because she died. I would recommend this book to my friends because it teaches about how to be abgood friend.
Sadako and the Thosand Paper Cranes.......2007-04-11
I loved the book Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. In the story Sadako
loves to run. She ran in the relay race. Then she felt dizzy spells. She kept them a secret. The dizziness came from the radiation from the bomb.
Then Sadako got leukemia and she was preparing for death. From reading this story I learned that when you are less fortunate, your life is harder like Sadako's. When you are fighting for your life, you seem hopeless, but there is always hope. After reading the story, I felt sad because Sadako fought for her life and she died a hero. I would recommend this book to a best friend because it is a good book about hope.

Good reference for addressing envelopes.......2002-07-20
I think this book is most useful for it's explanation of how the envelopes for wedding invitations are addressed (i.e. who's name goes first, what do you write on the inner envelope, etc.) I even found out how to address one to an Archdeacon! It also has helpful Q & A sections.
An etiquette book with an attitude........1997-08-13
From the very beginning of the book, the author has a chip on his shoulder.
Basically, Feinberg works for Crane's Stationery. Okay, fine. However, he almost immediately feels the need to discredit any etiquette maven who has said that you don't need a complete set of obscure, engraved stationery to generate proper correspondence.
However, if there's something wedding-related that you want to do in style, there's a good chance that he'll have an answer for you. Wedding, shower and party invitations; thank-you notes; reaffirmations of vows; etc. If you want to do it with engraved stock, he'll happily give you the proper way to do it. And if you happen to get that stock from Crane's, all the better, right?
Granted, the author is still a stickler for
wording conventions and will give you a flat-out "No" on many current standards. Examples abound, and I believe there's a section on how to address certain political figures.
This book could be a handy reference to hand around between couples as more and more of your
peers marry. Concise with a good index, the author's execuction, if not his motives, are presented quite smoothly.

Uninspired Origami Book.......2003-12-19
The tittle says "ultimate" but the contents are far from it. There's a modest selection of traditional models and several weak original models. The diagrams are clear and easy to follow. This book is geared to the beginner but is so limited in it's scope and quality of artistic expression that it does nothing to kindle an interest in origami." Origami Treasure Chest" is a great book for beginners, with loads of fun models.Try "Easy Origami" by Montrol for similar models, or better yet get Honda's "The World of Origami", perhaps the best origami book available.
Great starter book with easy and more complicated projects.......2001-12-10
Easy step by step instructions. Color pictures for each step with written descriptions. Comes complete with 2 sizes of paper in many colors and one pre-folded example. Starts with simple folds, includes action projects and more complicated folds. Explains the basic folds, and common bases such as Kite, Bird, Waterbomb and more. Lots of fun right from the start.

Real trading strategies for making a killing in today's volatile markets
Advanced Swing Trading reveals the strategies used by George Soros, Warren Buffett and other high-profile traders to reap whirlwind profits in today's volatile markets. With the demise of day trading, traders are searching for new methods of exploiting the unprecedented volatility of post-9/11 securities markets. The most successful of these methods so far has been swing trading, a powerful technical approach that allows traders to profit from shorter-term price moves, ranging from several days to a couple of months. In Advanced Swing Trading, veteran trader and leading trading coach, John Crane clearly describes his original Action/Reaction swing trading system. With the help of numerous real-world examples, Crane clearly delineates his system and shows readers how to use it to consistently to gain big returns in even the shakiest of markets.
John Crane (Loveland, CO) is the founder of Traders Network, a firm providing brokerage service and educational training products for smart investors. His monthly columns have appeared in Futures Options magazine, and articles about his trading strategies have appeared in Barron's, Consensus, and The Wall Street Journal.

utter rubbish.......2007-10-03
Utter rubbish IMHO. I am not anti technical analysis as I trade from price action and volume cues but this book seems to be a compendium of lines drawn on charts after the fact. I threw it away.
Are you for real ?????????????.......2006-12-11
Wow it is sooooo obvious that all thease reviews were submitted by the same person!! i bought this book, this is one of the worst books ever about trading (i have read alllllot of books) it seems if the author hired a 4yr old and asked him to make a trading method. The method that he talks about can be obtained on any trading forum for free. As for the method it self it is not worth the price of the book at ALL!!! and most trader's even if your new to trading probably allready know it.If your looking for a profitable method look elsewhere.
An interesting twist on fibo expansions or "measured moves".......2005-02-27
Mr Crane's book is well written and practical. If you enjoy charting you'll like just practicing with the Andrew's pitchfork and reaction lines. However, the main faults with the methods he mentioned are that the rules are too rigid to be accurate the majority of times, and the prospective use of the methods is quite a bit harder than the retrospective use.
The author mentions in his intro that he stumbled on a "repetitive, predictable pattern" that was the basis for his method. I believe that this was basically the "measured move," or the 100% extension of A-B-C swings. His charting technique with Andrew's pitchfork tries to predict this, but it is excessively complicated and only accounts for 100% measured moves. In my opinion, a fibo extension tool is far easier to use and allows traders to see the 61% and the 161% extensions as well as the 100%, which are just as useful. The time element of counting days, I think, is even more unreliable in practice. But, then again some measured moves are symmetric in time and price, so occasionally they work.
Bottom line, an interesting book, but not one that will likely have a very high predictive value.
a good idea but not a good system, needs more improving.......2004-10-11
It can't be a good trading system since market can't be predicted precisely. How can you define a swing or a hard mid term drawdown? or even to know the trend is over. No body knows. Nevertheless, he offers a very good idea to help trader how to predicate the market behavior. It is still worthy to study, but can't work as a trading system. It's too rigid to trade with this system.
Not the Holy Grail!.......2004-08-26
I really wanted to like this book. I've read it twice and spent some considerable time in revisiting the examples trying to become familiar with the author's methodology. However, there seems to be an operative disconnect between the espoused theory and the demonstrated practice.
First - the negatives. The author's thesis is that it is possible to predict market turning points in advance by identifying a reaction swing, counting backwards to a prior turning point, and then projecting that periodicity forward to derive a reflective, future turning point. But the author does not precisely define how a reaction swing is identified, or how one reaction swing is to be considered while another is to be ignored. The examples in the book do not address the reasoning involved for practical application of this method. This theoretical shortfall diminishes the utility of the reaction swing concept.
Second - the positives. Although this method was suggested before in Roger Babson's action-reaction theory (1910s), the Wetzel Market Bureau's "Course in Trading" (1930s), and Alan Andrews' course (1960s), it was not so thoroughly developed as it is in this presentation. Also, there are a number of interesting trading systems (set-ups) offered which might prove to be useful.
All in all, this book is akin to the photograph of a holy grail as compared to THE HOLY GRAIL. It is an interesting book that presents some time-honored concepts - with a few unresolved issues. More interesting (and usefully profitable) are the Wetzel and Andrews courses.
