5 out of 5 stars A Wealth of Ideas.......2007-07-02

As a beginning bench jeweler this series of books have given me product information besides the obvious design ideas. e.g. ultraviolet cement - not something I had been exposed to in class yet, but a marvelous material for pave work.

2 out of 5 stars Too Far Out for me.......2007-07-02

The photos were beautiful, but I wish I had paid attention to the word in the title: Contemporary. I had hoped there would have been some good silver or gold artsy types of earrings for inspiration. I found most of these to be geared toward a very limited market.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!!.......2007-05-15

I was extreamly impressed with not only the content, but the quality of the photos. It is hard to find jewelry books that display true art and inspire. Most of them are just cheesy "artsy-crafty". I would definatly by this book again and any of the same collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent design guide.......2007-05-13

500 Earings provides a wide vision on contemporary jewelry and design. It is a must have for any jeweler.

4 out of 5 stars 500 Rings.......2007-05-13

I liked many of the picture of the earrings. Many of the pictures where way out as far as design. It would make sense to let the really far out designs, have there own book. I like art jewelry, but unfortunately, much of the far out designs, are not marketable. There were many designs that are very different and still marketable. I would have to say I feel the same about the other books in this series.

If you can count on one thing from "Madea" Mabel Simmons, star of the smash hits Diary of a Mad Black Woman and Madea's Family Reunion, it's that she's got something to say. Now the beloved, sharp-tongued, pistol-packing grandmother has her own book-part memoir, many parts hard-won, hilarious, straight-up in-your-face words of wisdom.

4 out of 5 stars Funny Book.......2007-08-11

Good Advice with a lot of humor sprinkled in. Very good book. Next a cook book I would love to have that Sweet Potato Pie recipe.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Make a Black Woman take her earrings off was excellent.......2007-08-09

This was an excellent audio book. Done in the voice of Madea the hardcover could not have matched it. Some of the language did get a bit much, but the content advice, humor, and reality were both entertaining, informative and inspirational as well as giving some real life reality checks. I hope Tyler Perry continues on.

5 out of 5 stars Another hit!.......2007-07-25

what more can i say! this book had me in stitches! i would bust out laughin and people would look at me like im crazy..but what she says is true for the most part. great book...A++++++++++

3 out of 5 stars Funny, but predictable.......2007-07-17

For those of you unfamiliar with Mabel "Madea" Simmons, this book will have you rolling on the floor laughing, or nodding your head in agreement with some of the sage pearls of wisodm Madea (via Tyler Perry) shares. But for those of us who are die-hard Madea fans, this book is a "burnch" (as Brown would say)of regurgitated lines and material from TP's hit plays and movies. Not that it didn't make me smile; I had plenty of happy moments reading this. But as soon as I read one sentence, I knew exactly what was coming in the next three paragraphs. This book is a great intro to people who have only seen the movie adaptations of TP plays, but for those familiar with the material, try borrowing it from the library.

Incidentally, Tyler Perry's email newsletter states that there is a movie version of "Why Did I Get Married?" coming out starring Janet Jackson and Malik Yoba, as well as a film version of "Meet the Browns" (starring Angela Basset and a rumored-to-be Jennifer Hudson), as well as a sequel series of "Meet the Browns" (a follow-up to "House of Payne"). TP is a busy guy.

With precisely 35 canvases to his credit, the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer represents one of the great enigmas of 17th-century art. The meager facts of his biography have been gleaned from a handful of legal documents. Yet Vermeer's extraordinary paintings of domestic life, with their subtle play of light and texture, have come to define the Dutch golden age. His portrait of the anonymous Girl with a Pearl Earring has exerted a particular fascination for centuries--and it is this magnetic painting that lies at the heart of Tracy Chevalier's second novel of the same title.

Girl with a Pearl Earring centers on Vermeer's prosperous Delft household during the 1660s. When Griet, the novel's quietly perceptive heroine, is hired as a servant, turmoil follows. First, the 16-year-old narrator becomes increasingly intimate with her master. Then Vermeer employs her as his assistant--and ultimately has Griet sit for him as a model. Chevalier vividly evokes the complex domestic tensions of the household, ruled over by the painter's jealous, eternally pregnant wife and his taciturn mother-in-law. At times the relationship between servant and master seems a little anachronistic. Still, Girl with a Pearl Earring does contain a final delicious twist.

Throughout, Chevalier cultivates a limpid, painstakingly observed style, whose exactitude is an effective homage to the painter himself. Even Griet's most humdrum duties take on a high if unobtrusive gloss:

I came to love grinding the things he brought from the apothecary--bones, white lead, madder, massicot--to see how bright and pure I could get the colors. I learned that the finer the materials were ground, the deeper the color. From rough, dull grains madder became a fine bright red powder and, mixed with linseed oil, a sparkling paint. Making it and the other colors was magical.
In assembling such quotidian particulars, the author acknowledges her debt to Simon Schama's classic study The Embarrassment of Riches. Her novel also joins a crop of recent, painterly fictions, including Deborah Moggach's Tulip Fever and Susan Vreeland's Girl in Hyacinth Blue. Can novelists extract much more from the Dutch golden age? The question is an open one--but in the meantime, Girl with a Pearl Earring remains a fascinating piece of speculative historical fiction, and an appealingly new take on an old master. --Jerry Brotton

Book Description

History and fiction merge seamlessly in this luminous novel about artistic vision and sensual awakening. Girl with a Pearl Earring tells the story of sixteen-year-old Griet, whose life is transformed by her brief encounter with genius ... even as she herself is immortalized in canvas and oil.

Download Description

Chevalier transports readers to a bygone time and place in this richly imagined portrait of the young woman who inspired one of Vermeer's most celebrated paintings. "Girl with a Pearl Earring" is the story of 16-year-old Griet, whose life is transformed by her brief encounter with genius, even as she herself is immortalized in canvas and oil.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A work of art.......2007-09-09

After watching the movie a couple of months ago, I decided to read the novel on which it was based. I'm a big fan of visual arts and I couldn't wait to read it. Tracy Chevalier's subjective descriptive style really kept my attention. Elegant, clear, detailed... I could see, hear, feel and smell as Griet did.

The book is about Griet, a girl from a poor family in Delft, Netherlands, and the changes that take place in her. After living all of her life with her family, she's sent to work as a maid in the house of a famous painter to help support her family. At the same time she begins to realize (as others already had) that she's turning into a woman and struggles to deal with it.

At her new home, she has to learn how to deal with each of its inhabitants and still be herself. She finds relief when assisting her master with ink and the paintings, even though it endangers her position in the house. I did like the end of the book, although its resolution felt rushed.

Chevalier's details on light and shadow and color and shape are delightful.

4.5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Skillful fiction.......2007-08-28

If you have ever seen "the Dutch Mona Lisa", or the "girl with the pearl earring", by Vermeer you will have been struck by it's tenderness. Maybe it is misplaced to say so about a naturalist like Vermeer, but you get the feeling he must have liked this girl. However, nobody knows who she was or why he painted her in such an un-Vermeer-like pose.

Perfect fiction material then, and Chevalier has not wasted the opportunity. The book tells the story of a 16 year old girl in the 17th century Dutch town of Delft who becomes a maid in the Vermeer family. We follow her struggle to keep her dignity in a house full of strife, culminating in the event of her being painted (she, a maid!). I usually like first person narratives, but this is one of the best I know. The historical setting is (to me, a non-historian, but Dutch and knowing Delft) completely convincing. The story is plausible, satisfying and well composed, and the prose has a soft touch that somehow accords very well with painting itself.
The one flaw, for which I deduct a star, is that the protagonist is implausibly mature and confident for her age and social status. Another reviewer on this page remarked that the book reads better when you the girl looking back after the facts on her younger self. This is true, but a writer should not have to rely on goodwill like that.

The book reminded me of "Memoirs of a Geisha", in storyline (although it is less brutal), the ease with which the writer makes fiction feel like reality, and the way in which it makes you wish things will turn out well for a small girl in a big world.

5 out of 5 stars Chevalier is wonderful.......2007-08-23

Tracy Chavalier is a master at having art history come alive and incorporate within it a beautiful story.

4 out of 5 stars Words of Art.......2007-08-10

I think what makes this book so appealing to me is the fact that I was able to see a rare Vermeer collection a few years before I read this book and studied art in college, to really make me appreciate the story. One does not have to have any background in art (it simply enhanced the read), but if you're looking for beautiful words, an unconventional love story, and historical fiction --- I think this just might be the book for you. It's not a nail biter, but you certainly absorb each word and paint a picture of the story in your mind as you read. THe movie is quite good as well, but I'm always a fan of a book before the movie. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2007-07-19

This book is absolutely gorgeous. Chevalier paints with words as Vermeer painted with paint. Her prose and descriptions actually take on the same quality as Vermeer's paintings, luminous, quiet, and very strikingly beautiful. The character Griet is complex and interesting. The descriptions in this book are breath taking. Read this!!! Oh, and I am a teenager. Teenagers will love it too.

5 out of 5 stars Simple Solered Jewelry & Accessories.......2007-09-02

I recently purchsed two soldered pendants at a craft show and desperately wanted to find out how to make these myself. I found this book and it is a wonderful, comprehensive, easy to understand book on this technique. Immediately was able to make my own with complete confidence. Highly recommend.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I thought. No sterling silver...........2007-08-06

I purchased this book with the idea of learning how to do some simple sterling silver soldering. This book has no information on how to solder silver. It describes stain glass soldering techniques which uses a much lower temperature solder. Since I only work with sterling silver I sent the book back. However I must say that it is a very nice book. There are a lot of nice projects which look relatively easy. So if you want to make interesting jewelry that does not use semi precious or precious materials this could be it.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Delightful book!.......2007-07-22

This book is simply fabulous! The details and descriptions make a seemingly challenging craft easy to master. The girls at Simply Swank are simply divine! So accessible and personable! True customer service! Check out their website for more goodies and instruction. The DVD that they have provides a ton of practical information on how to solder with ease and I can't wait to try out my new Simply Swank soldering kit to make all the gorgeous jewelry and decorative accessories in the book and more. The possibilities for this new idea are endless. Definitely a great book to have in your collection whether you are a jewelry artist like me or a scrapbooker, or someone who enjoys making decorations, like Christmas ornaments. Many possibilities from this one simple craft!

5 out of 5 stars Learn to Solder - the Right Way!!!.......2007-05-22

Of all my books on metal - this is absolutely the best one I have! Directions and instructions are very clear and understandable. There are some great projects to practice with and build your confidence. The use of this excellent book has improved my skills considerably. I am so glad I found it!

4 out of 5 stars Simple Soldered Jewelry & Accessories.......2007-05-20

Concise instructions, excellent close-up photographic detail. My only disappointment is that mixed in with the jewelry that wowed me was some that was just ok. But, I would recommend the book simply because the techniques are sound and easy to understand. And, there's some very cool and imaginative jewelry in this book.

Book Description

The process of designing jewelry has never before been explored in a book. It has taken the combined talents of three top jewelry designers, including a profess who teaches the skill to jewelry students, to create this beautiful and practical step-by-step format. Starting with a fully illustrated discussion of design principles and metal and stone rendering techniques, this volume then presents progressive detailed sketches and finished drawings of many varieties of ring and earring designs. From such drawings the manufacturing jeweler can assemble the objects themselves. This book teaches one how to create those drawings. "It is a book that I have searched for, in vain, for many years. It is both the first and undoubtedly the best, and will remain the best for many years. This book is destined to become the bible of the designer, the guide of the artisan, and the companion of the jewelry lover." Samuel Beizer, Chairman, Jewelry Design, Fashion Institute of Technology, New York.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Great for Artists, not so great for jewelers.......2004-09-16

The good: This book has absolutely drop dead gorgeous illustrations of fine jewelry created using precious metals and precious stones.

The bad: The book is targeted primarily to those who have excellent drafting or drawing skills, with very little to no instruction provided in developing the skills needed to execute the concepts in the book.

The "artistic values" are presented as matter of fact axioms, with no support or explanation. In other words, this is not a "how to do it" book at all. It's a lovely presentation of jewelry design illustration, but there is no teaching here, and no hints on how the illustrations might be actually rendered in metal and stone.

Nice "idea book" for manufacturing fine jewelers who render metal from drawings, but of little to no value for small scale artist jewelers with no drawing skills who render pieces via improvisitory skills and spontaneous arrangement of physical objects.

5 out of 5 stars A Springboard for Successful Wire Wrapped jewelry!.......2007-09-15

I have been designing jewelry for 12 years. There is always some elusive technique that I cannot find really good tutorial for. This book offered an excellent tutorial for wire wrapping briolettes. A great book for beginners with courage and moxy. A terrific book for intermediate skilled artisans. Whether you like the pastel colors used in the tutorials or not, the skills demonstrated in the book are a terrific springboard for developing your own individual style of artistic expression in composition that will render long enduring quality work-which is as it should be. The projects, with very little imagination, have room to personalize and augment into a design that is more than the initial project offered. All projects have an elegance and grace that are missing from many of the other books in my reference library. I highly recommend this one.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful projects to inspire you.......2007-06-02

This book has some wonderful projects to inspire the buddinhg jeweler, with easy to follow instructions, I would recommend this book to have in your library and use as a reference.

4 out of 5 stars Teen's Review.......2007-02-03

I LOVE beading and this book was a very nice one. I looked through over 20 bead books to find just the right one of my favorite two. I like that the instructions are in depth but not too complicated. The pictures are really helpful and motivating. I feel like I am capable of creating anything in this book. For absolute beginners, I think some of the projects are too much especially for those who have little patience. I thought that some of the pieces were gorgeous but a couple of them I really dislike.
For You if...
you have patience
you've had a little experience in beading
you have the supplies (all the plyers, some beads, etc.)
you're easily inspired
you want a book that uses a wide range of tecniques

Not For You if...
you're just starting beading
you don't want to make jewelry
you want something REALLY different
you're looking for strictly an inspirational book
you don't like transparent beads and light colors (they use a lot of those)

4 out of 5 stars Beautifully Georgeus.......2007-01-10

M.T. Ryan beautifully combine stones & materials that give the 'bling' and elegance effect on each of the projects. With step by step pictures & instruction, this book is a DO for beginners. For intermediate level, you'll find another insight in combining material, choosing colors and experimenting more in using georgeus chunky stones!

4 out of 5 stars Beaded Jewellery.......2006-11-09

A very nice book - great instructions and pictures. Most of the jewellery is made with wire as opposed to thread. Beads are certainly easily obtained from any good bead shop. I would recommend to anyone who likes working with wire.

2 out of 5 stars Expensive .......2007-08-03

Same two techniques used repeatedly in the same way throughout the book: Right-angle weave and "Coraling Technique" (actually branch fringing), both can be easily found on internet. The 10 projects are all the same with some alterations (which are presented as "different" projects). In my opinion there was no need to publish a whole book (more accurately a 45 pages booklet with large pictures-good for visual learner- but for obvious reason to fill the pages) on just two techniques at such price.
I could give the book 3 star, but the price bothers me since you can find a lot of books with many different projects at the same price.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Jewelry.......2006-03-17

Varvara has done it again. Her books are clearly illustrated and the projects do not fail to be beautiful. The techniques are surprisingly easy and success is possible even on a first try basis. Most of the projects are made with 11 seed beads. The projects are beautiful, easy and very gratifying.

3 out of 5 stars Fancy Branch Fringe.......2005-12-17

The pieces in ths book are gorgeous and frothy, but not anything I'm likely to wear. Her 'Coraling Technique' is really just branch fringing taken to extremes; quite beautiful extremes.

It's a nice book (45 pages) to have in my beading library but I wish I'd spent my money on something more diverse.

4 out of 5 stars Coraling Technique: Step by Step Instructions for Making Ten ORiginal Design Necklaces, Bracelets & Earrings..........2005-09-15

I have loved the coraling technique since I started with it a few months back. I was so excited to have found this book and couldn't wait to order it. In fact, I have now ordered her other books.

The book is beautiful with very clear instructions and wonderful ideas. Varvara is such a great artist.

Book Description

There is an inexplicable magic about earrings, unmatched by any other kind of jewelry. Uniquely, they move with a life of their own, voluptuous yet pure, cold yet provocative. Earrings have been worn since prehistoric times; ancient civilizations offered earrings to their goddesses, and today they remain the most demanding and rewarding exercises of the jeweler's art. Daniela Mascetti and Amanda Triossi, both experts from Sotheby's, are themselves under the spell of earrings, and their erudition does not disguise that this book is as much a romance as a fine piece of art-historical research. The authors relate how the fashion of wearing precious earrings spread from ancient Egypt to the Classical Greek and Roman worlds to Byzantium. Techniques in the cutting of gemstones and diamonds, perfected in the eighteenth century, allowed earring design to evolve towards its most stylish and glamorous, and the book covers every period and style up to the present. The great names among designers and international jewelry houses--Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Harry Winston, Bulgari--are represented in dazzling displays of precious and semi-precious earrings. Illustrations range from Rococo flowers and long, heavy girondoles thick with diamonds and emeralds to chaste Neoclassical disks and the delicate nodding sprays of the late nineteenth century. A wide-ranging study that will be a rich source of inspiration and delight for collectors, designers, and fashion lovers, this is a feast for the eye and a revelation of the wonders that artistry can create.

5 out of 5 stars A Focused Treasury of History of Design.......2007-01-07

As as jewelry designer, I am continuously researching the history of design. In building a library of references I have been very selective in my acquisitions for inspiration and research. This book is a wonderful history of design with exceptional photographs and bibliography. The section at the back with biographical annotations of designers of note is as precious, for me, as the photos and text of the book. I highly recommend this one!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book.......2005-01-12

Beautiful book with very pretty pictures! I was very pleased when I received it and I highly recommend it to antique jewelry fans!

5 out of 5 stars A True Delight for Antique Jewelry Collectors.......2000-05-08

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Pedestrian.......2007-08-20

I've gotten two-thirds of the way through this book and I'm not sure I'm going to finish it. "Why," I ask myself, "am I reading this unromantic, pedantic, academic book? Nothing about it works, from the telling of the tale in the first person to the unlikely possibility that Vermeer needed help with his subject matter. Lusterless and Pedestrian.

2 out of 5 stars Over rated!.......2007-08-03

This slim book does not deserve the praise heaped upon it. How absurd to imagine a young maid, without any background or instruction in art, will explain to the master-painter Vemeer how his paintings might be improved. Griet sees the flaws in the paintings and wonders why Vemeer does not correct them - yeah, that's plausible. Not once is Griet wrong in her criticism/suggestion on how the painting might be improved.
Unexplained in this lame plot is why Griet's situation is so precarious - the master instructs her to mix the colors - but if his wife finds out Griet is carrying out his instructions, there will be hell to pay! But why? And why is the other servant so jealous that Griet is mixing the colors?? The extra work doesn't sound fun.
One of Vemeer's daughter's torments Griet for no apparent reason (other than to create plot "tension") - oh no! Griet might lose "everything she has" - but what she has is nothing but a low paying, hard working job as a maid. And losing the job is no big deal anyway, she can go marry the butcher's son who lusts after her. (What an anti-romance the courtship of Griet by Pieter is - how dull, how devoid of passion, - their "dates" consist of Pieter groping her body in an alley!)
Usually "literature" that is this weak in plot makes up for it with beautiful prose, but the prose in this novel is merely workmanlike. This is no masterpiece. I was glad the book was only 288 pages in the hardcover edition.

A fantastic book, pure delight. Perfect from the first page to the last: consistent quality. A book one cannot leave aside.

5 out of 5 stars A Winner.......2007-03-05

One of the best books I've read in a long time. Read it in a couple of days. Beautifully written. The story is subtle yet beckons to be read so it can unravel itself to a perfect ending. I would highly recommend it. I felt like I was wandering the streets of Delft. The descriptions were amazing. Chevalier did another great job. I also recommend The Lady and the Unicorn.

4 out of 5 stars Which of the "Vermeer books" to read?.......2005-09-19

Art lovers, and particularly Vermeer lovers, have had two "Vermeer novels" available for the past few years, Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier and Girl in Hyacinth Blue by Susan Vreeland. Both are short, both are well written, both involve a hypnotizingly seductive Vermeer painting, and both tell of the influence of the painting on the lives of the main characters. As for which is better, that may be a matter of taste, though Girl with the Pearl Earring has had the lion's share of publicity, especially after the production of the film. Many readers will be interested in reading both novels.

In Girl With A Pearl Earring, author Chevalier focuses her literary microscope on Griet, a maid in the Vermeer household who becomes an assistant to the painter. Griet is a young woman who maintains her integrity despite the turbulence and social pressures to which she is subjected in the household. Life in Delft and in this family during the time of the painting is replete with petty jealousies, economic pressures, class distinctions, religious differences, and political and social uncertainty, and Griet has to navigate her way through this milieu. It is through her character and domestic situation that one comes to know Vermeer and his painting.

The second Vermeer novel, Girl in Hyacinth Blue, on the other hand, is not a "character novel." Here the author does not concentrate on one character or even the painting as an end in itself. Instead, Vreeland takes a broader, more global view, using the history of a hitherto undiscovered Vermeer painting to work backward from the present to the painting's inception in Delft. The "story" here is a careful tracing of themes--the relationship between personal love and responsibility to mankind in general, the role of art in the lives of ordinary people, and what constitutes lasting value both in art and in human interactions. In seven or eight chapters we see how the painting has affected the lives of its various owners.

Ultimately, comparing these beautifully wrought novels is like comparing pearl earrings to hyacinths. Both are gorgeous; each is unique. Girl with the Pearl Earring is more accessible and more popular, while Girl in Hyacinth Blue is more complex and literary. Lovers of Vermeer are encouraged to read both--and enjoy. Mary Whipple

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2007-03-22

This is a wonderfully funny book to share with young girls. It's a perfect book to teach persuasion-if you're a teacher.

5 out of 5 stars Great persuasive book!.......2001-12-04

As a teacher, I am always on the lookout for a great book that demonstrates the type of writing I am teaching. In this case, EARRINGS is a wonderful example of persuasion. The little girl is trying to convince her parents that she is ready for pierced ears, but her parents (like myself) are stubborn. She uses every form of persuasion, from begging to making deals, to get her parents to relent.
I use this book when introducing persuasive writing, to my fifth graders.

5 out of 5 stars Earrings a wonderful tale.......1999-12-09

My sister really enjoyed this book and we checked is out of the library so much we had to but it for Christmas. A cute tale for all little girls to read.
