Travel Philosophy.......2007-09-30
As Potts mentions at the outset of the book, this is not a travel encyclopedia. His intention is to elaborate on why it is that we travel, and better acquaint you with the philosophy. Potts is not shy about quoting other people and you will find a lot of references to other writers. If anything, this book will provide suggestions about what travel philosophy books to read. Also, this is a good book to re-read at different points in the planning of your journey
An Interior Guidebook for Exterior Travels.......2007-07-26
Excellent resource for finding out the why of travel and exercising your imagination and discovery muscles as you go. There's some good practical information here, but it's mostly about orientation... how you orient your mind, expectations and attitude as you go forth and engage the world. It's not a bad recipe for every day life at home, actually.

if, in your heart, you are a travlin' man (woman)... then this book is like a religious soul reading the bible or koran or buddha books ... just pick a chapter and verse and be reassured you are on the right track..... or path or road...we traveler's know (mostly) why we do what we do... but it sometimes helps to remember we are not alone .... still the best book of it's kind!!!!!

I was hoping for more of an updated version of one of Ed Burns Vagabonding books. This was a bit annoying and preachy with little substance, but always a good topic, and not much out there on this kind of travel.

I would have like to have seen photographs of the beautiful west front of the Chatsworth Stable. Also, some of the blueprints did not reproduce well. I think it would have been a more pleasing read if these were clearer. Instead of angles of the rooftops, it would have been nice to see the whole stable.

The concepts and ideas in this book are covered very well.
Where other references and text books only scratch the surface and do not give engineers guidance in more challenging applications, this book helps tremendously.
This book will also help engineers undertand the mechanisms and failure modes of anchoring which is required now in the United State's International Building Code.

This book is about doing discourse analysis. Its focus is on method, but the method is embedded in a wider theoretical perspective on social life, in the view of language as action, in the recognition that the social world revolves around talk (and writing). Can we reconceptualize such traditional concepts as attribution and personality in discursive terms or shed light on applied topics, such as sexual abuse and legal adjudication?
Doing Discourse Analysis: Methods for Studying Action in Talk and Text draws on conversation analysis, critical discourse analysis, pragmatics, and particularly, the discursive approach developed in social psychology. The book presents examples of actual discourse analyses, covers procedures of data collection and strategies for data analysis, and addresses issues of reliability and validity or the scientific warrants for discourse-analytic work.
This book provides both the practical steps for doing discourse analysis and the theoretical justifications for these steps. It is an essential book for students and researchers undertaking discourse analysis.

This is the most spectacular book for you if you like lots of HUGE clear photos of TONS of gothic cathedrals. There are MANY pages of history and other information about the making and restoring of the cathedrals. A MUST HAVE for any gothic-history lover.

I first discovered this book in the library and I checked it out several times because I just loved looking at it so much. The pictures are so breathtaking, it increased my resolved to go to Europe and visit all these incredible places first hand. It's a great thourough book for anyone who is new to Gothic art forms as well as a visual reference for people who are already familiar with the style.

Having borrowed this book over and over from the library, I really had a hard time parting with it when I last returned it. The photographs are splendid, a joy to look at. Since it also qualifies as a reference book, I looked it up ..... to but [buy] a copy but was certain price would be ... more than in was. Now I'm about to by my third copy --it is an amazing bargain.

I found the book superb. As a lover of Gothic arquitecture, I buyed it recently and I found lots of great color photographs, really interesting texts as they have been written by german experts, and more surprising, with an excellent price/quality ratio. After buying this book, I have completed the series buying the books dedicated to Romanesque, Baroque and Renaissance. All of them are really fantastic.

I have been looking for this book for ages! I have had all of the other books for a while and thought that "Gothic" was beyond me. Now I'm glad that I kept looking. I know that there are other books out there on the Gothic period, but none of them are as well-done as this one. Usually you would spend twice as much to get a book of this caliber in your library. The photographs and text perfectly compliment one another. This book delivers far more than I ever expected.

AN ASTONISHING BOOK..........2001-10-11
As a confirmed Firenzephile,I thought I had already purchased and read all the current books on this perfect city, but have now discovered that one of the very best was still waiting for me.
With R. W. B. Lewis' The City of Florence as the best book with which to prepare for a trip to Florence and the Eyewitness Guide to Florence and Tuscany as the best travel guide, I would suggest this very pleasing, square volume as the other book to take with you. ( I am in danger of getting into list-mania here!)
This book is arranged by sections of the city, beginning with a fold-out map of each area followed by photographs, diagrams and essays on each notable monument and what it houses. Furthermore there are interesting and manageable additions concerning history, architectural terms, information on artists, other notable persons, a time line and more.
I have lived in Florence and can assure you that the photographs are splendid and the information inclusive,well researched and concise. While certainly being perhaps the world's most intimate major city, it is also one of overwhelming richness and density (this is why there is included a charming essay on Stendahl Syndrome-don't miss it!). To have made so much information manageable is quite a remarkable feat.

A great little book chock full of beautiful color photographs on every page! On a tour of Italy, little time was spent in Florence, and this book clearly showed me what I missed. Now I know I will HAVE to go back. A great value.
