5 out of 5 stars Kid's Love It.......2007-01-22

I gave this book as a Christmas gift to my friend's daughter. She reports that her daughter (age 3) LOVES the book and requests it on a daily basis. They enjoy the simplicity of the stories and the colorful pictures.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-01-06

My daughter loves the book and the pictures are great. She is 5 years old and she is starting to try and read it on her own. Great book!

5 out of 5 stars My Little Pony Storybook Collection (My Little Pony).......2006-11-04

My 3-year-old daughter received this book for her birthday and she loves it. She really likes the colorful illustrations and will "read" her book independently, retelling the stories.

5 out of 5 stars My girls loved it.......2006-07-30

My girls, 3 and 5 really like the Little Pony toys and books overall. They pick out the one story they want to hear by looking at the index in the front. They enjoy the pictures and trying to identify the pony with their name.

The 5 year old is beginning to read and the pictures that are substituted for the words in the story help her to "read" the story. My only qualm is that the pictures should have the word that they represent underneath them. This would help to reinforce her reading skills.

The stories are cute and have a simple moral message.

4 out of 5 stars My daughter LOVES this book!!.......2006-01-26

I purchased this book for my 4 year old daughter as a christmas present. She has asked me to read this book every night since then. She loves the colors and she adores every pony, in the opening of the book the first story is "Meet the Ponies", she has never asked me what the names of her little ponies were before this book but now she almost has most of her ponies names memorized! And she has alot of them! She also told me that she thinks that the ponies are very good friend to each other. She says that they are never mean and they always ask to help their friends. I feel that this is a very good lesson for my daughter to learn. Even though some of the stories are a little pointless you do learn one key thing and that is that friends are very special and you should try always to be a good one.

Book Description

Fueled by anger at the death of his two brothers in World War I, 16-year-old Edward abandons his ailing father on their farm and leaves Canada to enlist. After proving that he can tame any wild horse, he's is sent to Jordan to fight with the Cavalry.

Luckily, his horse is the extraordinary Buke; in battle, a trooper's horse is the key to life and death, and his true companion. In the harsh desert, Edward is grateful for the camaraderie of his tent mates, Cheevers and Blackburn, and letters from Emily, a nurse he met at base camp. As they close in on the enemy Edward finds that the glory and noble vengeance he seeks is replaced by the horror of war and the realization that he must fight not only to survive, but also, to kill.

5 out of 5 stars Historical fiction at its finest.......2007-07-30

Arthur Slade dedicates this novel to the memory of the five Slade men who served in World War I, his great grandfather, grandfather and great uncles. The dates of the youngest one jump out at the reader, "Private Percy James Slade, 1897-1918 (KIA.)

If my memory serves, I do not think there is a village or town in France and England that does not have a memorial to the fallen of The Great War. World War I does not loom as large in the memory of Americans. In Megiddo's Shadow, Slade takes the reader to a lesser known front of that war, to Palestine in the Middle East.

Sixteen-year-old Edward Bathe leaves his farm in Saskatchewan, Canada and joins the army after receiving the news that his beloved older brother Hector has been killed in France. All he wants to do is get to the front and kill the Hun who took his brother's life but upon arrival in England he is transfered to the Fifth Imperial Remount unit to break horses. He chafes at the assignment but does meet a horse who will be part of his future when he is reassigned to the Lincolnshire Yeomanry. Slade describes the role of these units on his website :

"Yeomanry were different than cavalry--they were trained to be foot soldiers and mounted soldiers. The idea was that they could ride quickly to their destination and dismount and fight. Or they could charge. They were even taught to get their horses to lay down, so they could use them as cover. The regiment was also trained to use the sword or lance in a charge."

Edward and his horse, Buke become part of the British Expeditionary Force in Palestine. The description of desert warfare is unforgettable.

"A month later, in July, I was sent to hell...

...We fed and watered our horses, working through the night because the day would be too hot for us to lift a finger. As the sun rose, it revealed a desolation only the Devil could've dreamed up: a low, flat valley of white marl and salt, spotted with swamp, stony plain, patches of dense scrub, and a thin layer of dry grass. The land had never know rain. Lumps of dried flesh--dead camels--lay here and there as though dropped from the sky, a sky that had never seen a cloud. A hot breath of wind drove the salty dust into my eyes. Occasionally, a thirteen-pounder gun would roar just to let the Turks know that His Majesty's troops were still here."

Very much a classic boy-goes-to-war novel in the tradition of The Red Badge of Courage (Tor Classics), All Quiet on the Western Front or Fallen Angels, Edward experiences the comradeship of soldiers, a first love and the grim reality of warfare. He faces the loss of those he loves and his faith in God as he struggles to find meaning and survive.

Slade relates his grandfather and great uncles' true stories on his website. They are as gripping and heartfelt as the novel and are very much the inspiration for this book. The letter Edward and his father receive about Hector is taken almost verbatim from the real letter the Slade family received about Percy Slade.

Moving, emotional and wrenching at times, this is historical fiction at its finest. I will be reading more of Arthur Slade's writing in the future.

5 out of 5 stars A well told story for any age.......2007-01-22

A sobering story, well told. It follows the journey of 16 year old Edward Bathe, from the Canadian prairie, who joins the army to fight the Huns in France in 1917. Instead, he finds himself in the cavalry on his way to the Middle East. The story is well researched, full of details about army life, and also chronicles the emotional turmoil and growth of Edward. There are a few twists in the story and Slade's writing propels the reader forward. While intended for the young reader, Megiddo's Shadow was very much enjoyed by this 'mature adult'.

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

An samurai of superb skills, because of political reasons, goes his own way, and takes his kid with him, partly to stop him from being murderered.

Along the way, of course, you will get all the sword slinging, head slicing samurai action you could want.

A grim, uncompromising and violent man, this is not your fluffy kids manga, so worth a look from that point of view. Not too many of those around in English, with an art style that is more likely to appeal.

4 out of 5 stars anime.......2007-02-19

I like this book. It is well written and one can see where the cause is comming from. Unfortunatly I would recomend seeing the DVD, since these are awesome martial arts film. These books also explain some questions that are left unexplain in the movie (or the english caption in the movies)since my Japanese is limited to a few words.

1 out of 5 stars But is it art? .......2007-01-11

First, I have to admit, I'm not a big manga fan. Though I love some anime onscreen and dig the comics, this is not what I had in mind.
Found out about Lone Wolf through a parody in Usagi Yojimbo and if that's enough to make me a wannabe just stop reading, cause I really hated this little book. The artwork was so gritty and coarse that you could barely tell what was happening and then everyone was dead. Wasn't difficult, wasn't artistic, just some blurs and then everyone is dead again. Plot? Near as I can tell its a guy and his kid who kill everyone they meet. That's it.
Takes a lot to make me not finish a book, especially a comic. I made it maybe 15 pages into this one.

5 out of 5 stars Re: Lone Wolf and Cub.......2006-08-03

One of the best pieces of literature I've ever read. The fact that it's a "comic" book kills the chance of it being read by a much larger audience. Most people who wouldn't give comics a chance would be surprised at how much they would like this story.

The story is as tragic as they come. Honor and revenge take Ogami and his son, Daigoro, down a path that no child should ever have to live or experience. The hardships of the child touched me the most.

If anything, the story is very educational. Kozure Okami's research and insight into Edo was very thorough. I learned alot about that time period. It was an excellent learing tool.

I you get the first volume, you'll never stop until you get all 28 volumes.

4 out of 5 stars Great story and artwork. Too bad about the size........2006-07-20

There's no doubt that this is a great series with excellent stories and artwork. My only complaint is about the 6" by 4" size. One of the consequences is that the text is very small and bound to induce eye strain in readers (especially those who are over the age of forty).

this book was awesome!
they really could make a movie out of it
if u like horses and a little bit of history then u will like this book!

5 out of 5 stars Exciting historical fiction.......2005-12-09

I have read this story with students average age 14. Their response was total involvement in the plot and the character, Hannah and her horse, Promise. They did not believe at first that the book would be interesting, since they thought it would be "ho hum" history. The cover illustration suggests it might be another Paul Revere Midnight Ride to Lexington and Concord. Wrong! The main historical event is the lesser known "Salem Alarm." The author weaves fascinating historical events into a plot that today's kids love. Not a bit boring! In fact, one student said, "It was like watching a movie in my head." Kids LOVED this story and rated it a 10/10. Did I forget to mention that I loved it, too?

5 out of 5 stars A spunky young patriot in colonial Boston.......2005-07-03

Joan Harlow knows how to catch the excitement of an historical event and weave a believable story and characters into it. MIDNIGHT RIDER, is the account of fourteen-year-old Hannah Andrews who rides her horse from Boston to Salem in 1775 to warn the colonists of a British raid. Hannah, originally from Salem, has been indentured by her scheming aunt into the Boston household of General Gage, governor of the colonies. As a servant she finds herself in the midst of not only family secrets, but angry clashes between colonists and British troops. She sneaks out to secret meetings of Patriots and one day overhears General Gage's plan to seize colonial munitions stored in Salem. Hannah, siding with freedom-loving colonists knows what she has to do. She risks her life and that of her horse Promise to ride through a snowstorm to warn the people of Salem about the raid. Joan Harlow captures the character of this spunky girl who reflects the grit and determination of colonial America to gain independence.

This is one of my favorite books. Yes it certainly is an adults book but it has a great story line. I only hope that Barbara Moss write a sequel. Great book!!!

5 out of 5 stars In and Out.......2007-08-05

This is a wonderful book esp. if you are a educated jumper rider. I can't even put it down and have recommended it to many of my other horse friends. The story line and details are right on... it sounds like it is written by someone who has "been there and done that" in Wellington and on the nitty gritty jumper circuit as well as climbing to the top in the horse competition world. I can't wait for another book written by Barbara Moss regarding any story line on the competitive horse world with its background in Wellington and Europe.

3 out of 5 stars Loved the horsey talk, hated the characters.......2007-06-27

Jerico Brandeis is a Grand Prix level rider who has set his sights on quaifying for the Olympic team and running his training/showing business. He is a cocky, and arrogant personality who has loads of psychoanalyisis to get through. He also has some serious difficulties with women and definitely waffles between viewing them as objects to falling desperately head over heals in love with them. While I agree that this is very stereotypical of trainers in this industry, that's just it... it's a stereotype.
Of course such a self involved individual needs a roommate; welcome Starbucks; this is a character that I think is supposed to be a foil/comedic relief for the story. I hate this guy; he is a former Starbucks employee/ photographer who has the brain of a pea and the looks of a male model. Come on!
Now we get to the conflict. Much of the drama in this book arises from him crossing over professional lines; as in having an affair with his main patron's wife, oh, and getting caught at it, then doing it again and getting her pregnant when the spouse is STERILE (DUH!). This book was pure soap opera drama in the human relations department with a little porn thrown in for flavoring.
The only redeeming value in this book is the depiction of the horses, the jumping and the actual mechanics of the show jumping industry (which was still a bit stereotypical) In terms of the descriptions of the riding and show jumping component, I felt that the book did a good job in giving us a glimpse into that world. Jericho's career was sped up a bit for the sake of the plot line, but you do get a good idea of how hard it is to make it in that world.

    5 out of 5 stars Second Book.......2007-06-15

Any word yet on a second book for the series?

    5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down.......2007-03-15

The story sweeps you along. Horses, adventure and romance (yes, and sex)combine with intriguing characters, humor and plot twists to produce a great story. I can't wait for her next novel.

I think any child between the ages of 8-13 will get a big kick out of this book. My two sons both enjoyed it immensely (Huh?), and have started crafting their own lists (leave dirty rolled-up socks all over the house; including the refrigerator).

The story is reminiscent of Andrew Clements "The Landry News," but the characters are a little more fleshed out, and overall it's a little more sophisticated.

I look forward to reading this to my 2nd grade students at the end of the school year, and imagine it will provide us with a great writing topic to conclude the year with.

I really, really like this book alot. I enjoy funny things and like to clown around, and I really liked the humor and some of the funny things the main character, Sneeze and his friend, Hiccups did together. I thought it was really cool the way Sneeze tried to stand up for himself and earned the money to go his invention convention. I would definitely recommend this to a friend and could so see me and my friends doing some of the silly things the characters do.

4 out of 5 stars 101 Ways to Bug your Parents.......2007-01-24

In this compellingly funny book author Lee Wardlaw helps the main character, Steve "Sneeze" Wyatt, find an amusing way to keep the fans begging for more excitement. The reason that it's so funny is because Steve, Goldie, and Hiccup say and do. 101 ways to Bug your Parents follows the journey of the young Steve "Sneeze" Wyatt as he desperately tries to get to the Invention Convention.

This book isn't directly about bugging your parents so if readers are just looking for a list of ways to annoy their parents this wouldn't be the book for them and it will be a waste of time and money. This book is about a boy named Steve "Sneeze" Wyatt, who wants to become an inventor and gets invited to this invention convention, he needs $250 to get there. So he gets an idea. What if he sells a list of 101 ways to bug your parents? In addition to writing the list he also gets a side job of working at a golf place called Gadabout Golf. He fixes up the windmill and all the extra cool golf course stuff.

When Steve brings in the "Nice Alarm" to school he tries it out on his best friend, Hiccup. Supposedly it wakes you up nicely with a pat on the shoulder but instead it karate chops Hiccup in the nose. Hiccup comes up and says My Nose but Wardlaw spelled it "By Dose," because if you hold your nose and talk it sounds funny but different. This is what makes Lee Wardlaw such a phantasmagorical author. She does an excellent job in making the readers feel like they're right next to Steve in his journey to the Invention Convention.

4 out of 5 stars The Life Saving Horse.......2007-04-20

What would you do if your horse saved you from the frightening death of drowning? Then what would you do if that horse was taken away from you? That is exactly what Alec thought of in the fictional book The Black Stallion written by Walter Farley.

Alec was on a ship back to his homeland, when the ship got in contact with a glacier. No one even thought of about saving that horrible, kicking, horse in the stables. Though Alec knew it was the right thing so he went into the stables and saved the horse. As they jumped off the ship, Alec was too weak to swim. So the stallion swam miles with Alec at the end of the stallions lead rope, until they saw land. They were stuck on that island fighting to survive as their friendship grew between them. One day a ship came and saved them. In a couple of days they would be at home. The stallion was named The Black and was kept in an older barn behind Alec's house.

I couldn't put this book down. This whole series was amazing. Anyone who loves horses would love these books. This book made me happy, nervous, and sad. It also made me cry. I think everyone should experience these feelings when you read a book.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Book & the movie was a masterpiece.......2006-12-17

This book is a must-read for any child. When I was young I read lots of Jack London books and I also read the entire Walter Farley Black Stallion series. Walter Farley's books are written in a very simple style, easy for young readers to understand. The movie is a timeless classic & was so well done. Some children will find the movie slow (no talking during the whole island sequence) but if your child appreciates beautiful images, and is horse-crazy, they'll love the film. I now own a black Arabian stallion of my own...so be careful, Black Stallion books can cause a lifelong horse addiction!

5 out of 5 stars A Book That Has Been Special To Generations Of Children.......2006-07-08

Strange in a way that I loved this book so much when I read it in fourth grade, because, ironically, in real life, horses kind of scare me. I think Walter Farley's book is magical and I hope others who read it find as much meaning as I did in the story of a boy named Alec Ramsey, who survives a shipwreck and befriends a magnificent black Arabian stallion. Yes, this enduring classic is basically a fantasy, but sometimes it takes fantasy to create a book that is capable of touching the human soul in the exact way this one does.

3 out of 5 stars Quality of the Black Stallion.......2006-04-15

I greatly enjoyed this book when I was younger, and I still like it. However, in recent years I have come to realize how prejudicially obsessed Walter Farley was about Arabians. Even in his book The Great Dane Thor, the horses only briefly mentioned in the book were Arabians. He didn't seem to realize that there were other breeds in the world. For instance, he had the Black's daughter, Black Minx run in the Kentucky Derby--a race exclusively limited to Thoroughbreds.

In recent years, I have also realized Farley's poor writing stile. Not only did he not do research, but he presented his views as FACT, not opinions. For instance, ALL horses are intelligent, but especially ARABIANs; ALL horses are more sensitive than people and can find water by smell in a desert...or land in an ocean. Among horses, Farley stated on no uncertain terms that Arabians are by far the most superior, and that among Arabians, The Black was king.

I don't know about you, but I'm kind of tired of that. I'd like to see the Black lose a race or two, or sire a dud colt. The Island Stallion was the same--in fact, when the Black met Flame, the fight between them was a draw because they were both FLAWLESS Arabians, so perfect that neither could beat the other. It was a satisfying end when I was little, but now it annoys the fire out of me. I have read most of the series, and it is always the same: The Almighty Arabian wins out over man, nature, or other horses...and here is one once-avid reader who is sick of it.

How would you feel if you were the only one to survive a boat wreck? What if you had to live on a stranded island with no vegetation or wild life; just a small pond and an untamed horse.
Thirteen-year-old Alec Ramsey is on boat back to his home-land, New York City, to see his parents. But his plan changes when his boat wrecks. He is forced to live on a deserted island with a wild Arabian stallion. He comes to love and gain the horse's trust and they become friends. He comes to call the horse The Black. As their trust blooms, he gets to ride The Black. When he does he is nearly thrown off due to how fast The Black can run. Will they be saved? And if they are will he get to race The Black.
The Black Stallion is exciting, and thrilling. It was hard for me to even put the book down. I believe if you love horses that you will not be able to put the book down either. I would suggest the book to ages 8 to 12. Remember if you like this book a lot there are plenty of books that Walter Farley has written.

5 out of 5 stars Good but not my favorite.......2006-12-27

THis was the third Phantom Stallion book I had read and It was good, but it's not my favorite. Ryan Slocum is in love with Hotspot's foal, Shyboots. When Linc says that he is going to destroy the colt because he's a "Mongrel" Ryan takes action. He talks Sam into hiding Hotspot and Shyboots with him.
Of course just a few hours later Linc shows up accusing Sam of stealing his horses.
Ryan left to go to San Fansico with his mother and twin sister, leaving Sam holding the bag. Sam takes Sherrif Ballard up to the place where they hid the horses, but they are no longer there!
All in all it's good. I recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good book.......2005-06-24

This book was pretty good, I liked the story but I thought it was a little too made up. Like things couldn't happen that way in real life. I just read Rusty the high flying Morgan horse and that book was a lot better. It seemed like it could really happen. I like the phantom books but I also like the morgan series cause the stories are more real.

5 out of 5 stars Another Very Exciting Book in the Phantom Stallion Series!.......2005-06-12

I really enjoyed reading this book because it keeps you guessing until the very end. When two horses turn up missing, you have several possible suspects, and you never know for sure who is telling the truth. If you love horses and mysteries, this book has both.

3 out of 5 stars Okay, but not great.......2005-04-29

I do like the Phantom Stallion series a great deal, but I was disappointed in the last couple of books. In the book before this one, the author left a lot of things unfinished and I was hoping that she would pick up where she left off. In the last book, the dangerous hunting dogs were still on the loose, Linc Slocum was in trouble in the mountains, and Blaze the River Bend Ranch dog was missing. I wanted to hear where Blaze was, how Linc was helped, and what they did to catch the dogs.

Instead, the story just picks up with Blaze back (never once even mentioning that he was missing), Linc being his normal "evil villain" self (which is getting more and more extreme with each book), and they mention once that the dangerous hunting dogs were sent back to Louisiana. But how did all this happen? How did they catch the dogs again, where was Blaze, and how did they manage to get Linc out of trouble? We don't know because the author says nothing.

The book itself is not bad, but it did get off on a bad note with me because all the problems and issues that the last book left open were more or less forgotten and she just charged into another story. The story is about Shy Boots, the colt of Apache Hotspot and Diablo, mentioned in the second book of the series: Mustang Moon. Apparently Ryan, Linc Slocum's son, is very fond of him and is trying to protect him from his father who wants to get rid of the little colt. Ryan gets Sam to help at the same time as the HARP program on River Bend starts up again. However, Ryan goes from being a sort of shy guy that is rather competitive with Jake, to being a total and absolute spoiled brat all the of the sudden. I mean, honestly he was never really unusually nice or anything in the other books, but he was polite and not nasty or anything. In this book, he is all the sudden being a manipulative jerk and thinking he can pay for anything he wants, etc. and gets Sam into some trouble through this. Because of Ryan pushing Sam into doing something not so smart (she means well, but acts on a bad idea trying to help), Hotspot and Shy Boots disappear. Shy Boots ends up being sold to a petting zoo, but Ryan rescues him with Sam's help, though he still acts like a brat. Hotspot ends up running wild with the Phantom (huge surprise there, not trying to be rude to the author, but I saw that coming a mile away). There is the brief intro of the character, Karl Mannix, who is supposed to be working for Slocum, who ends up (like all the people who work for Slocum, except the Kenworthys) being a crook who is responsible for Hotspot and Shy Boots being missing, though he is not actually caught at the end of the book.

The book itself is not bad. I love the author's writing style and descriptions, but if you are hoping to have some of the loose ends of the last book taken care, you will be a little disappointed. If you really enjoy the series (as I do), I do recommend reading it because the story is a good one and Sam develops (at least a little) into a stronger, smarter person in this book. I liked it, but it was not quite what I was hoping for. Still, for the die-hard fans who own all the books (like me), then it is a nice addition to the story line.

My 7 year old daughter found this series while we were in London this June. Naturally they were a hit since horses and princesses are two of her favorite things. It also helps that there is a little mystery thrown in. She reads them from cover to cover in one sitting. And she often re-reads them when she is finished. The stories are appropriate and interesting and the characters are loveable.
