5 out of 5 stars Faces of Clay.......2007-01-05

This book is the best instruction tool and reference for everyone wanting to learn to form a realistic bust in clay. I keep going back and further " seeing" forms I didnt recognise previously.Highly recommended for all sculptors.Thank goodness for Bruno!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-12-28

I bought this book during some downtime after surgery and I was thoroughly impressed. My first project was a bust of my daughter and it turned out well enough that the neighborhood kids all wanted their own!

I've been sculpting ever since.

You won't believe how easy, how enjoyable and how little time it actually takes to create your own masterpiece!

Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars IT COULD BE BETTER.......2006-09-10

Bruno Lucchesi's book is interesting though it could be better if it were in colored photos. I also wonder how he removes the newspaper inside after the sculpture is ready - he doesn't show. While making the hair, he doesn't claim the attention to the serious problems of the bubbles which can explode the piece... Despite all this, it's a good book.

The authors, Eric Bean and Jenni Bidner illustrate this book with fantastic photographs and beautifully written compositions of what should be expected by models and what is expected of them. 5 out of 5 stars All the basics of what it takes to become a model.......2005-06-09

It's fitting that art and crafts book publisher Lark Books should then move to a book on photographic modeling, Complete Guide For Models: Inside Advice From Industry Pros: it's a logical transition and offers the power of an art book publisher paired with the expertise of a fashion photographer and fashion editor. Models will learn all the basics of what it takes to become a model for the artist; from posing for commercial print ads to special opportunities for men, women and child models. 5 out of 5 stars I Loved the interview with Supermodel, Carmen Dell'Orefice........2005-06-03

It was really informative hearing from a model who has modeled for 50+ years. I recently saw Carmen Dell'Orefice in a runway show in NYC, and she looks great. Great interview, great photos.

5 out of 5 stars I learned alot from this book.......2005-05-22

I live in a small town in California, and i want to be a model. I always dreamed of going to NYC and being a runway model. I asked a few of the agencies in nearby towns, but they didnt know much about NYC. I got this book, and it answered alot of questions i had about modeling. The modeling schools near me charged alot of money, to take classes, but i learned just as much from this book. I can't wait to go to NYC now.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Still Have Questions........2001-07-18

I agree with the previous reviewer - this is definitely a better book for people making porcelain dolls than dolls from polyclay. I am fairly disappointed and still have a lot of questions. However, it was very helpful regarding sculpting over an armature and gave me some what of an idea of how to then proceed to make a mold from my polyclay piece. I also have Rotraut Schrott's book and I honestly don't find that one all that much more helpful for my purposes. I am really trying to figure out joints and making mold at this point and I am having a difficult time finding a book that will help me as they are all geared towards porcelain. And the polyclay books all assume you are making one of a kind dolls. The pictures are good in this book though and I feel I have a little more grasp on what I'm shooting for now - so I give it 3 stars which to me means average. I wish I had thought twice before buying it. There must be a better book out there.

2 out of 5 stars Guide for sculpting in water clay, not Cernit -Sculpey........1998-08-24

This book shows how to model a toddler doll from head-to-toe as the title suggests, but the sculpting techniques presented are more appropriate for clays used in large masses, i.e. not polymer clays like Cernit and Sculpey. A better book for sculpting young children using polymer clays is Rotraut Schrott's "Making Original and Potrait Dolls in Cernit".

4 out of 5 stars Good starter book.......2002-05-31

Complete and easy read a great place to start.

5 out of 5 stars A very good foundation book.......2002-01-01

I wish I had this book when I first started to sculpt figures in wax. I would have saved myself a lot of time and agrivation. I would have also saved myself quite a bit of money by using good tequniques, and in that respect alone this book would pay for itself. If you are just getting into wax sculpture, this book would lay a very strong foundation from which to build your skills.

5 out of 5 stars Learned more than in 6 months apprenticeship.......1998-12-30

I got this book after making jewelry for 3 years and lost wax casting for 6 months. Boy, did I learn a lot! The projects are truly outstanding. They show a wide variety of techniques and styles. Try each one even if it's not a style you're really big on - I did and found neat ways to do things I wanted to do that I hadn't managed before. I require this as a text for all my apprentices who do casting.

So appreciate that Bruno took the time to produce this book so that those of us who arent able to attend his workshops, have the opportunity to learn.A master of anatonomy who presents the process in pictorial stages we can clearly follow.A must have figure form book.

5 out of 5 stars exceptional.......2006-12-29

both this and 'Modeling the Head in Clay' are the best books I've seen on the subject.

Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars spectacular ecorche course.......2006-08-29

If you are a representational figurative sculptor, and want to learn how to build the human body from the inside out, you cannot have a clearer how-to with pictures treasure book. 360 degree and close-up views are included with each step.

Step by step, the master shows how to build the figure starting with the skeleton, and laying on each muscle, then fatty tissue and skin layer. Serious artists will benefit by getting a medical poseable skeleton, along with the 19th century classic "Artistic Anatomy" by Dr Paul Richer.

Study hard, and do the exercise like you were in class with the teacher. There are no shortcuts, however, the dedicated few will advance exponentially, but only by having the patience and discipline to follow through. It pays to know more rather than less.

5 out of 5 stars I Wish I Could Give It Six Stars.......2001-10-27

This book, along with the other titles in the series: "Modeling the Head in Clay" and "Terracotta," is an excellent resource for beginning sculptors. In fact, if I could buy only one book on sculpting, it would be one of these three (and most probably this one). The book is a walk-though of a single sculpture, which is instructive, but it is also a great reference. Mr. Lucchesi's style is realistic with natural poses, and quite pleasing -- it exudes peace and repose. Ms. Malmstrom has a gift for photographing and describing exactly those parts of the process most interesting to students. The medium is clay, and I'm working in wax, but I have not found this to be a problem. Be advised that it concentrates on the female figure, so an additional anatomy book may be helpful for proportioning male figures.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing book - but not exactly what I thought..........2001-05-21

If this book was actually what I had been looking for, I would have given it 5 stars. However, it wasn't exactly what I had thought. It is not so much a "how-to" book as it is an illustrated diary of the artist's amazing process. This particular sculptor sculpts the entire skeleton, muscular system out to the finished sculpture you see on the front of the book. It's amazing but a little more detailed than I believe a beginner such as myself needs - I was a little daunted by the entire process but also quite in awe. The photographs are tremendous. This book would probably be better suited to students in advanced sculpture.

4 out of 5 stars Not as expected........2006-10-29

I expected this book to offer me assistance in building human forms in clay; that's why I give this book a 4. Instead of advice, I got a gallery book of less-than-realistic art pieces (histories of ceramicists) by: Viola Frey, Akio Takamori, and Luo Xiaoping, among others. I kept the book for what it is. For a how-to-book, I recommend PORTRAIT SCULPTING, ANATOMY & EXPRESSIONS IN CLAY by Philippe & Charisse Faraut.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A True Teacher's Book.......2004-08-17

I have used this book since it's publication and it is a wonderful classroom resource for anyone involved with handbuilding in clay. The examples are authentic--you know they really were made by children. The project ideas are very timely and especially geared to younger children. A must for any visual art library.

5 out of 5 stars Great ideas.......2002-10-23

This book has been very helpful for myyoung children's clay classes. We successfully completed several projects from this book and everyone was happy: teacher, kids, parents. It was fun seeing the older kids come over from their wheels and be jealous of the little kids' projects. The book has also been a source of joy to me since the animal projects we did in class were so much fun, I continued the projects long after class was over.

The writing is clear, sometimes sparse, but the pictures are good. I also appreciated the associated learning that can accompany the projects (or vice versa).

5 out of 5 stars AN IMAGINATION BOOSTER.......2001-11-11

The concise, clearly worded directions are easy to follow. No wasted words; no partial explanations. In the photographs accompanying each project, I like the mix of student and mature work. Also commendable are the explanations of how basic handbuilding techniques can be combined to produce lively ceramic art. All in all, The Great Clay Adventure stimulates the imagination. I highly recommend this book for clay artists, art teachers and school libraries.

5 out of 5 stars NC K-12 Clay Exhibit.......2001-07-08

The past three years I have had the privilege of chairing an exhibition of K-12 student work in clay for the NC Pottery Center located in Seagrove, NC. This year my grant was generous enough for me to present each teacher who participated in our exhibiton a copy of Ellen Kong's book, The Great Clay Adventure. Each receipient was thrilled and eager to begin new clay projects with students.

We at the Pottery Center feel confident that distributing this incredible and inspiring book across our clay rich state of 100 counties will definitely stimulate our next generation of potters!!! Thank you, Ellen Kong!!

5 out of 5 stars At last!.......2000-12-20

I have been looking for just the right book to help me get started doing workshops with children in my small town. Today I came upon "The Great Clay Adventure" and I am delighted. The pictures are clear and colorful, the instructions easy to follow and 'extensions' given at the end of each chapter will enhance the total clay experience. I will add this book to my library and will use it often.

5 out of 5 stars CLAY CHARACTERS FOR KIDS.......2007-07-23

This was my first polymer clay book. I got it because my 8 year-old daughter had a play date with two other girls, and it was raining "cats-and-dogs". I found that, with my supervision, the girls were able to make figures that they were really proud of. No previous practice! But, Oh Oh(!), by the end of the play date the girls were watching mom make figures of her own, and shamelessly ignoring the little ones! That was over two years ago, and polymer clay has become one of my passions. This book is great for introducing the fun and versitility of polymer clay, and is great for kids with adult supervision!

4 out of 5 stars Fun place to start........2007-02-13

My 8 y.o. daughter and I are on cat #3 in her planned family of 5. I agree with other opinions that there could be a little more details, but we're adaptable sort of folks, so we just ran with it and used our imaginations. Other figure books are too detailed in sculpting for kids so I think this is a great place for a kid to start especially as a project to share with a grownup.

2 out of 5 stars Ok for adults.......2006-04-14

It's rather difficult to grasp what the author is talking about, due to the fact that she does not include very many details on how to put the characters together, or how much clay to use. It's pretty difficult for kids since the projects are very specialized and involve A LOT of clay for anyone who's not a "professional" hobbyist. It's good for getting ideas or checking the basics but I would not recommend this book for the projects or for a novice, like me.

4 out of 5 stars Inspirational pc book for kids.......2005-08-15

Definitely a book to own for kids pc artist. You may not be able to recplicate 100%, but this book surely gives ideas to kids.

Let me describe this way. My 7 year old native Chinese boy does not read English (yet), but he manages to create his versions of characters out of the book - just by looking at the pictures.

We're going to build our story scenario out of our creations soon. I'm happy with my purchase.

4 out of 5 stars suitable for all ages.......2004-11-30

This was my first ever polymer clay book I was very pleased with it. It is suitable for the young or the young at heart. (Especially mothers with toddlers/young children, something to do on a rainy afternoon!)

Finding One's Way With Clay is a fresh as it was over 25 years ago when it was first written. It is both an eloquent how-to book as well as a provacative and inspirational look at the relationship between clay and the human being.

5 out of 5 stars It's a Classic.......2002-10-15

After 25 years working in clay, I finally read Paulus Berensohn's "Finding One's Way with Clay". He describes many techniques for pinching pots, and ways to experiment with clay to create new expressions. The steps in making simple or complex hand modeled pieces are clearly explained, and I found them useful in teaching elementary art classes. There's also a thorough chapter on building a simple sawdust kiln.

5 out of 5 stars fabulous book.......2001-03-31

This artist is truly unique. He is the God of the pinch pots. Highly reccommended. There are neat excersizes to use in classes that beginners to experienced ceramists can enjoy.

This book presents an interesting dichotomy: on the one hand it is a seminal publication on sculpting and animal anatomy, on the other is is hopelessly out of date rendering some of the information within of questionable value.

Originally published in 1911 (!) Lanteri was a teacher to Rodin, amongst others, and there is a touching letter from him reproduced at the start. I think one should remember reading this the perspective of the writer - a sculptor of the French 19th century style, moreover a sculptor of monuments from this period - which almost by definition demand a fairly clinical approach. The resulting pieces are of undoubted skill, and I personally am a great admirer of this school of representation, but many will find them a bit sterile I suspect.

The book is subdivided into 18 chapters, beginning with introductory remarks on the symbolism of sculptural representations of animals in disparate cultures. The second chapter is over eight pages of text discussing the horse, mentioning breeds, characteristics and other points with comment on form and movement. Chapter III is on the sculpting of a quarter-scale model of a horse, with supporting diagrams and sequential photos. The next chapter is short, concerning proportions and the next is even shorter, on refinement of the model. Chapter VI is titled "Some Special Points" and here we get to the meat (literally!) with over 30 pages of clear anatomical diagrams showing the muscles and skeleton of the horse in plan and side views. Chapter VII is on general principles with quotes from a number of "men of great artistic value" and includes four views of a sculpted anatomical study of the horse showing stunning mastery of form and detail. The next five chapters essentially deal with scaling up the model to full size using a laborious but obviously workable technique called pointing and chapter XIII is on pointing a relief. Chapter XIV discusses sculptural representation of other animals and XV through XVIII deal with sculpting the lion and then the bull, again with detailed anatomical drawings. The final three-part section, on casting in plaster, rounds out the book and here it really shows its age as I believe that modern materials like casting rubbers and alginates have almost completely done away with destructive casting methods (where the original and then the mould are both destroyed to make the final plaster).

The bulk of the information contained within this books is in the text and herein lies another problem: this is a translation from French into English (and Edwardian English to boot) and the text although it has a certain charm can come across as dry, even aloof. Even when the information is of value, and there is a great deal of importance here, it will be difficult in this day and age for the casual reader to sift through and I have a suspicion that without some formal art training, or at least a fair knowledge of anatomy and/or sculpting techniques, it will prove impenetrable.

In summary, for the serious student interested in monumental sculpture, particularly in this historical context, this is a must-have but for the casual reader and those seeking a how-to on sculpting animals I'd give this a skip. For those interested there is a companion book on sculpting the human figure.
