5 out of 5 stars I would HIGHLY recommend !!! Perfect starter book........2007-07-18

This book has GREAT, VERY USEFUL material in it. It is not overly detailed, but very usable. It should help any Church understand the outline of what it needs to do with visitors and greeting those visitors.
Most every basic thing is there to get started. I especially liked the idea of developing "Teams" who are responsible for different things. SO, overall, it is a perfect starter book. I would love to see the writer do a Part 2 edition where he would give more details, especially details on how to read visitor's body language so that you know whether to be just cordial with them or very friendly (personable).

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2007-01-30

I am currently working through this book with our first impressions person at Parkway. For us it is helping us see the church in a new light. It really isn't brain surgeon ideas...but it allows our teams to expand their sight with the church.

Sometimes people get comfortable or can't see the church larger than it currently is...this book is a great tool to open the eyes of your teams...

Also Mark is great and doing this stuff at one of the greatest churches to date...

4 out of 5 stars "First Impressions" makes a lasting impression.......2007-01-12

First Impressions - Creating WOW Experiences in Your Church is a very easy to read book that has a significant number of useful ideas which can be used and modified for use in the church environment. Many of the suggestions are common sense but not easy to implement. Using the suggestions will put you closer to the customer - in your church. To look at practices in the church from the point of view of customer service will not please all church goers, but it makes sense when we stop to think that everything we do at church "speaks" - it sends a message. Are we sending the messages we want to send by having that pile of clutter in the corner? When we great newcomers, do we immediately sign them up to serve on a committee? - it could scare people away. This book provides many ideas and observations worth considering. I do recommend this book to you.

4 out of 5 stars A Welcome "Welcoming" Book.......2007-01-05

Very helpful and many ideas on how to make your church more friendly to guests. I recommend it.

Book Description

Escaping the rat race and the lure of gold-digging women, wealthy businessman Vance Banning moves to a small, rural retreat, telling the townsfolk that he's an out-of-work carpenter. All he wants is peace, quiet and to keep away from women. So the last thing he needs is a charitable neighbor--especially a beautiful, gracious and persistent neighbor of the female persuasion--but there's something about Shane Abbott he just can't ignore.

Vance is certain his cover story will stop his lovely neighbor from getting too friendly, but Shane is determined to break down his resistance. Vance has been burned once, so only a fool would fall for the same innocent act twice. And he's no fool. But he has no idea how relentless Shane Abbott can be when it comes to giving a helping hand--or a loving heart.

He needed to simplify his life and mend his broken heart. She was searching for a place to finally fit in and a man who could love her for who she was. Together they discover that all they really needed was each other, and that love is the greatest Christmas gift of all.

5 out of 5 stars Nora Roberts is the greatest!.......2007-03-09

Nora Roberts books are always good reads. No matter the genre, no matter whether she writes as Nora Roberts or as J.D. Robb, she's a terrific writer.

3 out of 5 stars Not Very Impressive.......2007-02-09

Shane Abbott has inherited her great-grandmother's house and decides to turn part of it into a combination antique store/museum. The house needs a lot of work and she decides to hire her next door neighbor, Vance Banning, to do the work because she thinks he is a carpenter. Initially Vance tries to avoid Shane, but there's an attraction between the two of them he can't resist and he reluctantly agrees to help. Vance is increasingly attracted to Shane and she makes it clear that she is attracted to him, but Vance has been keeping some secrets from Shane and wonders how he can tell her the truth about himself and his past. As Shane wonders what is going on with Vance, her less than loving mother reappears in her life and further threatens the relationship between Vance and Shane. Vance can only hope that the love between the two of them will hold up through all their troubles.

"First Impressions" was the first book by Nora Roberts that I've read and, while it had it's moments, I didn't really like it. Shane is a spunky enough heroine, determined to make a success of her new business. She's a well-developed and well-written character, a bit flawed but lovable, especially with her tendency to giggle at the wrong time. But Vance is not well developed at all. Roberts tries, but Vance's struggles with his business success aren't very compelling. Shane's mother, Anne, has no redeeming qualities at all. She's a cardboard character and comes across like a villain in a Disney cartoon. The romance between Vance and Shane moves quickly, too quickly; within a week of meeting him Shane says she's in love with Vance and going to marry him. There's a nice scene in the book when Shane's car gets stuck in the mud and Vance helps her to get it out. It was funny and romantic and the book could have used more scenes like that. The final conflict between Vance and Shane is too contrived as Vance had plenty of time and opportunities to tell Shane about himself.

"First Impressions" was not very impressive.

4 out of 5 stars Nora Roberts never disappoints........2007-01-29

A great, fun read. Nora Roberts does a wonderful job breathing real life into her characters. They are interesting, have interesting professions and/or positions and play well to us commoners' fantasies. They have intelligence, spirit, good sense of humor and totally engage the reader. For some reason, I almost felt like this story ended too soon. It felt like there should have been more. Of, course, I NEVER like to see a good book end. It's almost like a friend moved far away. I'm still hoping Nora will turn "Three Fates" into a trilogy as good as "Born in Fire", "Born in Ice", "Born in Shame". I anxiously await her next novel.

5 out of 5 stars on time and a great read.......2007-01-20

This book was highly enjoyed by my mom. It was one of her Christmas gifts. I really am happy that I ordered it. This is one of our favorite authors.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Perfect story!.......2007-09-22

This is one of the best written books I have ever read. I couldn't put it down! Then, half way through the book I found out that the author lives in the same town that I work while stationed in the UK with my hubby! Which intrigued me even more to know that I could run into him anywhere. Being both to New York and London plus knowing a little background into the other places this book takes you, it is with such accuracy that I was amazed that this was written by only one man. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars False Impressions.......2007-08-29

Do you think you know how the art world works? Well, think again and then read False Impressions. You'll find a banker with a new way of building his collection.

A famous Van Gogh painting is up for grabs after the North Tower is destroyed in the 9/ll attack. The offices and papers of the bank that had a lien against it were destroyed but the banker was still determined to establish ownership.

But Anna Petrescu who had acted on the banker's behalf suddenly found herself without a job and wasn't sure why. Her firing made her suspicious of her ex-boss's intentions regarding the painting and she decided to take matters into her own hands.

At the same time, FBI agent Jack Delaney has been assigned the case being build against Anna's ex-boss and she comes under his watchful eye. He wonders whether she's acting for her ex-boss or herself when she takes flight for England to visit the owner of the painting.

A well-told, complicated tale of people moving in one direction, but each with his or her own purpose. The plot thickens when a new player begins to also follow Anna on her rather involed trip to Europe.

Anna is aware she is being followed, and takes steps to frustrate the person behind her, without realizing who he is or that another person has joined the chse.

Author Jeffrey Archer has used his vast imagination in creating complex characters and plots that meld together in a tale that will keep you reading. Plenty of action without the usual shoot-'em-ups, set in a series of well-drawn backgrounds with lifelike characters who live the story.

At times, the hair on the back of your neck will seem to rise when the villains you will love to hate come on the scene while you will will be hoping all the good characters come through the story with a whole skin.

Highly recommended as a story filled with all the things that make a fun read. You're sure to enjoy this book. I really did.

3 out of 5 stars Deadline Writing?.......2007-08-20

When I first saw "False Impression" in the bookstores, I was thrilled, as I like Jeffrey Archer's writing style. Even though this was a fast read, I was somewhat disappointed. This was not the same Archer I was used to.

Though Archer's master way of writing hasn't changed, "False Impression" has a weak and predictable plot, fuelled by sensationalistic fillers. The cover of the novel would have us believe that "False Impression" is on par with "The Da Vinci Code", whereas unfortunately it doesn't even have the "The" of "The Da Vinci Code." Similarly patterned, "False Impression" has us follow a Romanian living in New York, running through Romania, England and other places, followed by a merciless assassin. Oh yes, the Romanian is a survivor of 9/11, for good measure.

The book gets three stars for readability and Archer's reputation only. Save your money, and buy an older Archer.

4 out of 5 stars Good story line using 9/11 NYC.......2007-05-26

Set against the backdrop of New York City on 9/11 this is a good story and would make a good movie.

2 out of 5 stars Just Okay.......2007-05-26

I am a great fan of Jeffrey Archer. I've read many of his books and generally find them spellbinding. But "False Impression" is just okay.

Like most Archer novels, the story moves along at a good clip. The "twists," however, are obvious. I was disappointed that there was never a surprise -- some shocking turn of events. I expected more given the other Archer books I've read.

If you're in an airport looking for something to pass the time on the plane, this will certainly do. But if you're looking for a thriller with masterful plot twists, then move on to something else. This book will only disappoint you.

1 out of 5 stars A Muslim Revert to Christ responds!.......2006-01-08

This is an interesting book. Lang is sincere, no doubt. I found the usual missionary work from Islam to be quite bold and strategic in scope. The Muslim may use Ahmad Deedat's (he died last year having suffered from a stroke after attacking Christ- May God have mercy on his soul) many effective books to confuse the Christian who may not have had a good chance to research difficult topics like the Trinity (a favorite subject for Muslims to attack using it as mathematical formula to refute Christianity!). Coming from Islam, I found the Lord in the Qoran itself. I too struggled for a long time but discovered that Jesus is the Spirit of Allah, His prophet and His Word. If Allah had created His Word and His Spirit then there was something wrong with divinity itself for God could never be without His Word and Spirit.-

This comes from the Qoran:

"[4:171] ...... Christ Jesus the son of Mary was (no more than) an apostle of Allah, and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a spirit proceeding from Him...".

Jesus saves. The Qoran is a revised Syriac apocryphal series of Ebionite and other heretical writings predating Islam. Even its title Qoran comes from Aramaic, which means Qorowo or sermon in a Church...

Say (0 Muhammad): "He is Allah, (the) One. Allah AsSamad (The Self-Sufficient Master, Whom all creatures need, He neither eats nor drinks). He begets not, nor was He begotten; and there is none co-equal or comparable unto Him." Ikhlaas 112: 1-4

AsSamad is a plurality from Hebrew and NOT Arabic. Here it is again God is one God is a Triune God.. Samado in Hebrew means a plurality usually 3.

3 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2005-11-17

I read this book as well as Lang's "Even Angels Ask" after a Muslim girl I was seeing bought them for me. (In order to continue the relationship, I would have had to convert to Islam which I was open to and considered.) I read these books with the hope that it would provide some insight on what it was like to be an American convert as well as deal with some of the troubling aspects of Islam that, due to my cultural upbringing, I had problems with. On the first point, Lang delivered and provided some honest insights on the difficulties he had in becoming part of the Muslim community. I found these reflections invaluable and very helpful in demonstrating the myriad difficulties an American convert faces.

As far as addressing the troubling aspects of Islam, (the treatment of women, the irrational prohibitions on food, the concept of jihad, the non-separation of church and state, anti-Semitism, and general intolerance of non-Muslims), he failed to provide any adequate justifications or explanations. His attempts at justifying the treatment of women were inadequate and akward and only strenghthened a rational opposition to the treatment of women in Islam. In reading, it seemed that the subject caused him a bit of discomfort. His anti-Jewish feelings were apparent and disturbing and did nothing to assuage my impression that Islam is inherently hostile to Jews in particular. All of his other attempts to explain Muslim beliefs and practices that conflict with American values also left me unsatisfied.

In the end, I have to admit that the book was helpful to me in that it made it clear that Islam was not a worldview to which I could subscribe. The book did clarify many things for me which made it more clear that Islam was in conflict with my values. I appreciate Prof. Lang's attempt to share his experiences and thoughts on his conversion and am grateful that, thanks in part to his book, I was able to avoid making the mistake of converting to a faith which would have made me profoundly unhappy.

3 out of 5 stars What if.......2004-12-21

5 out of 5 stars Different prespective about Islam.......2003-07-12

Dr. Lang a professor of Mathematic of KU gives an account of his conversion. He gives a very unique prespective of ISLAM.The books is probably directed at American Muslims, but this book is great if someone wants to learn about Islam, Muslim or non Muslims

    Book Description

They are all infantrymen; none were commissioned officers. One is a German-speaking artist whose sole record is nineteen stunning watercolors that cover a year’s enlistment. Another is a free black from Syracuse, New York. Six are from slave states, one of whom was a Unionist. Drawing from the more than 60,000 documents housed in the privately held Gilder Lehrman Collection, Robert E. Bonner has movingly reconstructed the experiences of sixteen Civil War soldiers, using their own accounts to knit together a ground-level view of the entire conflict. The immediacy of diaries and the intimacy of letters to loved ones accompany the humor of an anonymous cartoonist from Massachusetts, the vivid paintings of Private Henry Berckhoff.

All reproduced for the first time in The Soldier’s Pen, the documents and images that Bonner weaves together, providing context and explanation as required, powerfully re-create the day-to-day lives of the soldiers who fought and died for Union and Confederacy. Not since the 2000 publication of Robert Sneden’s paintings and papers in Eye of the Storm has a collection of original Civil War documents so evocatively captured the war.

    Book Description

Loosely based on the beloved Pride and Prejudice, Debra White Smith’s First Impressions weaves a spell–binding, modern–day tale on the challenges and rewards of love.

Eddi Boswick has just settled in Texas to establish her law practice. Joining a local theater group, she is thrilled when she is given the role of Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice.

William “Dave” Davidson III amassed a fortune in the computer industry but leads a quiet life on his ranch. On a dare he tries out for the play and lands the role of Darcy.

Sparks fly each time the lawyer meets the rancher. When Eddi uncovers Dave’s secret will her heart soften? Will Dave’s fear of “being tamed” keep him from discovering love?

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Creative Writing 101.......2007-08-30

Ms. Smith has her strong points - modernizing character and plot for one. All six of the books in this series kept me reading to the end because of the really smart plots loosely based on Austen's novels.

However, the writing style is textbook "how to write a novel" language to an extreme that it at times takes you out of the story to say "people don't talk that way!!!". Creative writing classes teach rules that are meant to be broken, but Ms. Smith writes on a basic level that is simplistic and too clearly novel-speak. In one page, a car is referenced 3 times. Creative writing rule: don't repeat words. Time to break the rule: when saying car 3 times is less distracting than saying car, vehicle and automobile. A more skilled author uses language that is so deft the reader is unaware of it. Ms. Smith doesn't accomplish that, and it is at times quite annoying.

    4 out of 5 stars TJH.......2007-08-24

Really liked this modern take on "Pride and Prejudice. Looking forward to purchasing other books by this author.

    4 out of 5 stars P & P with contemporary issues.......2007-04-10

Ms. Smith's modern version of P&P is tightly wound, starting with the tornado literally forcing Eddi (Elizabeth) and Dave (Darcy) together to the proposal onstage in the middle of the Texas version of P&P, one will find well-developed characters and many similarities to the original. Ms. Smith's religious beliefs, especially those on abortion, were more pronounced than they were in her book Possibilities. Religion was not an "issue" directly discussed in the original, other than to make fun of Mr. Collins. I did not care for the "sermon" in the middle of this story. It seemed out of place, but it did not destroy my overall pleasure in the book.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for P&P Fans.......2006-12-01

In a way this book is predictable, because you know the P&P plot, but with the modern retelling, I loved wondering how the author was going to craft each relationship and conflict. The way the author weaves the modern story into the script from the original is fabulous!

5 out of 5 stars A very good Christian Romance!.......2006-06-22

I really enjoyed this book! I love the " Pride and Predjadice " story and I love Christian romantic fiction, so I thought it looked like it would be worth buying. I wasn't wrong-its a really good type of this kind of book. I haven't read any others in the series yet but I plan to. I would recomend this book to anyone who is looking for a good Christian romance.

A year in France in 1950 for the Littell family was not exactly A Year in Provence with Peter Mayle. No lovely scenery, no edible delights, not even good wine. But the Littell's French adventures are certainly entertaining. Put an inept American housewife in a country entirely devoted to cuisine, and in the working-class city of Montpellier, "which made Cleveland look like Paris," and you have the makings of a madcap comedy with a heroine who might well have been Lucille Ball with two small children. Based on the writings of journalist Mary W. Littell and written in her voice by her son John, who was 4 years old when the Littell's went to France, the book follows the family of four from one quirky adventure to another. Mary, who is a failure at learning French, survives in her strange new home by speaking like Tonto--using simple words in the present tense, or in English and loudly when all else fails, and by buying up all the canned food in the city. She's a one-woman sideshow when she shops and accidentally starts The Great Mayonnaise War when the league of French housewives tries to teach her the best way to make mayonnaise (half insist on using a fork, the others declare spoon is best). Little John becomes Mary's interpreter (of French and French ways) while 15-month-old Stephen rarely stops crying. Mary's husband Frank reads his small children Great Expectations and is the world's most outrageous teller of historical tales. He also makes a scientific search of 52 bars. Being 1950, there's much cocktail drinking and the parenting is a bit archaic. Mary never does learn to cook, but, fortunately, she does learn that love and affection work better when parenting than yelling. French Impressions is a fun romp through a vanished way of life--both American and French--with a fabulous and witty storyteller. --Lesley Reed

    Book Description

One steamy morning in the summer of 1950, Mary and Frank Littell-with their two young sons in tow-left America for a small working-class town in the South of France, where they spent one hilarious, unforgettable year. Filled with fascinating details of expatriate life, French Impressions is a riveting account of their (mis)adventures abroad.

    "Charmingly related...amusing." (Publishers Weekly)

    5 out of 5 stars Superb surprise!.......2003-11-02

This delightful little book has long preceded the more recent popular genre of Frances Mayes, Peter Mayle, and other American ex-patriots living abroad and by far outclasses them in its originality and fresh outlook. Written from a 1950s memoir, this book captures the true adventure it was like to live abroad in a foreign country that was NOT used to seeing Americans among its midst. Mary Littell's humor and quips turn seemingly ordinary scenes and transactions in the southern French town of Montpellier into sparkling, humorous, unforgettable moments. This was a delightful, charming, and completely addicting book - I could not put it down! I have enthusiastically recommended it to family and friends.

5 out of 5 stars Laugh Out Loud Fun.......2002-01-19

If you're a traveler, a closet traveler, or even an avid bookworm, you're going to love this book. I've read my share of travelogues, and this one is at the top of the list. Fun to read. Hard to put down. Heartwarming. Enjoy!

    5 out of 5 stars A College Student's Perspective.......2001-10-25

This book was given as a present and with most presents you don't find out how good they are until you unwrap them. I had no idea what to expect when I picked up this book. For two reasons, the first one being, I'm a college student and there is no FUN in reading. The second one being a bit more personal. This book is about my grandparents who I never had the privilege of meeting. But unlike others I was able to learn what they were like through the voice of my grandmother in this book.
A book truly is a present you can open again and again. Not only was I able to learn more about them but I found myself laughing out loud many of times. This really is a wonderfully well written book about a very great family (not that i'm biased) and you will find yourself not being able to put this book down or even controling how loud or hard you laugh. It is a must read for everyone of all ages.

    3 out of 5 stars It's too bad.......2001-05-25

the way this book turned out. I really wanted to like it, & expected to. The writing was good & the use of the diaries & letters well done to facilitate the story, but I just didn't enjoy it, although I did finish it. Right away I was surprised to read that they took jars of baby food & disposable diapers along. I was born in 1947 & so remember the 50s quite well. I had a baby sister & there were lots of other babies in the neighborhood at the time & my memory is of canned baby food in that era, not glass jars. Nor did I ever hear of disposable diapers for sale during that period; in fact, when my first child was born in 1967 they were uncommon, expensive & hard to find, so that seemed odd.

Afterwards I decided it was the father's personality that most put me off the whole book. He really came across as patronizing & completely horrible imo. In real life he might not have been as totally obnoxious as he seemed in the book; I certainly hope not, for the sake of the others in the family.

    3 out of 5 stars A Year in Montpellier.......2001-03-09

I like John Littel, the son, for loving his mother so and for (the idea of) writing this book. Sadly for me, I did not always enjoy reading it. I was frustrated with it. And I found myself so annoyed at the husband! Here is a woman married seven-plus years, and she still can't tell if her husband "is kidding or not." Here is a couple that never seemed to speak with one another. It's dated, one might say. But, I don't think so. His constantly telling her how stupid, slow-witted, and ineffective she was -- and her skipping over it -- drove me nuts. I have been to Montpellier; it was wonderful visiting it again. But I suffered for this woman, and her inability to ask for and obtain any parenting help at all. Maybe that's how some families operate: in France or not. Now that I've made my points: read the book if only for the swan chapter. It is very funny. And Mary does get the last laugh re her friend-in-the-park, but I don't want to give it away.

    Book Description

Americans have long been fascinated with European views of the United States. The many Chinese commentaries on America, however, have remained largely unavailable to the English reader. Land without Ghosts presents for the first time selections on America from Chinese writings over the last 150 years. Included are extracts from the travel diaries of nineteenth-century diplomats, a first-hand account of blacks in 1930s Alabama and of the young white Communists working to organize them.

This is a collection of essays about Chinese impressions of America over the last 150 years. We know what Americans thought of the Chinese when they first arrived -- this is a rare opportunity to learn what the Chinese thought of Americans. Topics include helpful suggestions concerning American ettiquite, essays on American women, black Americans, and the various problems in America (too much traffic, excessive consumption, etc.). This book will allow the American reader to examine his/her own society from a different perspective.

      Product Description

Printing was the most widespread, and competitive business of nineteenth-century America. Every city had not only its big presses for printing catalogues, books, and newspapers, but also countless smaller presses for printing small jobs - the pamphlets, posters, handbills, stationery, cards, and tickets that gave the century so much of its color. Several of the names we now count as giants of the publishing industry: Scribner, Doubleday, George Houghton of Houghton Mifflin, and Donald Brace of Harcourt Brace started out not as publishers but as small-job printers, running their own shops and working humble, everyday, manually operated presses.

This complete, definitive, and richly illustrated survey of small nineteenth-century printing presses, written by a former curator at the Smithsonian Institution, is the first history of these lovely, useful, and prodigiously varied machines. There was, in those days, a small printing press for every purpose. And there were innumerable boys and men eager to make their fortunes by investing in one, printing for a local clientele, and, with luck, building a printing or publishing empire.

What the desktop computer is to today, these small iron workhorses were to the nineteenth century, and this book, which catalogues, describes, and illustrates over a hundred small printing presses and their makers, giving machine specifications as well as patent information, is a mine of previously undocumented printing history. No one seriously interested in the story of American printing can afford to be without it.
