Book Description
In Finding Sanctuary Abbot Christopher Jamison, host of the BBC television series "The Monastery," suggests the teachings of St. Benedict are a tool for everyday lifefor those who are religious and for those simply searching for spiritual guidance.
"The Monastery" involved five non-monks living the monastic life for forty days while TV cameras tracked their progress. The sight of monks responding thoughtfully and helpfully to ordinary people's struggles was a surprise to millions of viewers who had presumed that monks were "out of touch."
St. Benedict wrote his Rule for monastic living 1,500 years ago when he was abbot of Monte Cassino, the monastery that sits atop an inspiring mountain to the East of Rome. The name, "The Rule of St. Benedict," often misleads people into thinking that Benedict wrote "a book of rules." In fact, he wrote insights for Christian living, with practical suggestions for daily practice. The insights still guide people today and many of the rules have been adapted to local conditions as Benedict requested.
In every generation monastics integrate modern realities and the wisdom of the Rule in a new fusion. That fusion is the spiritual energy enabling monasteries to be places of sanctuary today as they have been for centuries. And that sanctuary can be recreated in the hearts of people of good will. This book explains how St. Benedict's wisdom can be applied to busy modern lives, and how sanctuary, peace, and insight can be achieved by people living inside and outside of monasteries.

Finding sanctuary.......2007-08-07
This is an excellent book for those who are looking for healing from the modern lifestyle.
finding monastic peace for lay persons.......2007-01-03
Jamison is Abbot of the Benedictine monastery outside London that was the location for the surprisingly popular BBC TV series titled "The Monastery." He imparts commentary on the seven virtues the monastery's spiritual regimen centers on. "Before we can take the step into the sanctuary [of the peacefulness coming with higher spirituality], we have to find the doorway and that doorway is virtue," writes Jamison. The prized virtues are silence, contemplation, obedience, humility, community, spirituality, and hope. The daily regimen of the regular monks involves practicing them and seeking them to attain increasing levels of spirituality. The TV series followed five lay persons temporarily taking part in this regimen to gain better understanding of the spiritual life and how to grow in spirituality themselves.
An instruction book for mindful living in the benedictine tradition........2006-12-26
This is a wonderful book on the rule of Benedict. Abbot Jamison does an excellent job in conveying a simple message of the realistic application of Benedictine spirituality in everday life. I finished the book in about 4 days, and I intend to re-read it again. A very thoughtful, peaceful and inspiring read. I highly recommend this book along with Mertons "New seeds of Contemplation."
Absorbing Benedict's Insights.......2006-11-28
In this work, Christopher Jamison, abbot of a Benedictine monastery near London and host of the acclaimed BBC documentary series The Monastery, offers monastic steps for "people of all religious beliefs and those with none." Few will be able to simply read this book, but instead will find themselves absorbing it.
Jamison explains that the Rule of Benedict is not a rule book at all, but "a book of insights about Christian living, with some practical suggestions (rules) about how to put those insights into practice." Jamison's book is organized into seven steps for overcoming the busyness of modern life in favor of finding sanctuary: silence, contemplation, obedience, humility, community, spirituality, and hope. In each chapter, he compares current cultural attitudes to Benedict's views on the topic, gives examples in monastic life, and suggests applications for the larger world.
In the chapter on humility, the abbot explains the discipline involved in separating our desires from our actions. If, when I am hungry, I wait before eating, he writes, the link between desire and action is slowed, and I learn to be more reflective in my response to desire and to contain my desire.
In the section on sacred reading (lectio divina), Jamison provides a model that is much more personal and less technique-based than that often used in groups. He defines lectio simply as God's speaking to the reader as "you," and your being moved to address God in response. At the end of the book he shares a personal lectio divina example based on the parable of the prodigal son.

People magazine declared that "[Nora Roberts] is at the top of her game," and there's no greater evidence of that than these three novels. From the horse farms of Virginia to the rugged beauty of Montana to an island off the coast of Georgia, these novels showcase Nora Roberts's talents for intense drama, vivid characters, and fast-paced suspense.

Love all of Nora's romance books.......2007-02-25
You can never go wrong with a Nora Roberts romance novel and this is just one more great one in the list.
beware small type.......2007-01-15
i haven't finished reading even the first of these three books, but I am struggling to read the small, serifed type. I don't usually have any problems reading normal type, but something about the font and size of the type, combined with the large book is making this read a bit of a struggle for me.
So far, really like the characters and very typical Nora Roberts writing.
Very Good Reads.......2007-01-14
If you are an avid reader as I aa and a Nora Roberts fan too, you can't beat these three great books combined in one volume.
I am certain that you will enjoy these three earlier works by Nora Roberts.
Great vendor.......2006-11-14
This book was in great condition. The delivery was fast. Thank you for your prompt attention.
True Betrayals/Montana Sky/Sanctuary.......2006-08-31
Truly a great grouping of three story lines. Each one kept me on the edge of my seat and reluctant to put down until I completed it. Descriptions of location and events put you right there. I can't wait to read more of this author.
Book Description
More than half a century after Einstein first described the energetic unity of the world in his famous equation, E=mc2, we are finally beginning to understand the spiritual and mystical implications of his discovery. Sanctuary: The Path to Consciousness is about the miraculous possibilities that emerge when we see the universe as a matrix of frozen light, the spiritual manifestation of our intuitive consciousnesses.
In this remarkable novel, you will find a new energetic model of the body, the spirit, and the nature of the physical world. It points the way to unlimited possibilities of absolute, eternal transformation, and you will find out that it is readily available now!
After reading this book, you too can take advantage of the techniques of energetic Quantum-Consciousness Evaluation, and be able to identify and remove subtle-energy imbalances to attain and integrate physical, emotional, and spiritual harmony!

Can we trust AIM?.......2006-12-02
Over the last 5 years or so, I have learned a great deal about "vibrational therapies" and have applied some of it directly to my patient base. I know they can work and I realize why they must be supressed and ridiculed by "the powers that be". This is why I bought this book and read it in a single sitting. Although written as a fictional story, the technology "Max" uses exists and can get fantastic results, but what bothered me is the lack of recognition from the authors that "Max" did not invent anything new. At best, he might have simplified the techniques through better computer technology. Passing him off as some sort of brilliant, innovative health guru serves economic interests more so than the truth here. I know exactly what system "Max" uses in the first half of the book for diagnosis and treatment, and the general term used for distance healing via a "witness" (which he does in the latter half of the book) is called Radionics and was "discovered" and used with great success on people, animals, and plants/crops back in the 1930s and probably even earlier. But, of course, none of this is mentioned or acknowledged in the book.
What "Max" does is quite real and this is the ultimate value of the book if it can open people's minds up and turn them on to "vibrational therapies". However, paying AIM a bunch of money and sending in a photo and hoping that someone does something of value to it in California is questionable. And the fact that it is endorsed by the Hollywood turds makes it even less viable in my opinion. My advice would be to research the technology in the book and ultimately buy your own machine (total cost is about $24,000 USD which would include the top-rated type of machine, the flight to Europe to get it, and about 7-9 days worth of hands-on training while there). Become the mysterious "Max" of your neighborhood!!
Happy vibrations.
POWERFUL - I LOVED IT!!!!!!.......2006-11-16
This book was referred to me from Amazon where other people that order the same kinds of books I order - also ordered: Sanctuary, The Path to Consciousness. This was about 1 1/2 years ago. I got the book, feeling a little reluctant that it was written in a novel format, but when it was delivered, I started reading, and didn't put it down for a day - until I was finished. It's an easy read. I had to know more about the current energetic balancing program the minute I finished reading the book. I have spent over 20 years studying different modalities for healing, - and understood much of the information and technology described in the book. You tend to "get" these concepts, or you don't. I got it. It is transforming. One of my mentors, Dr. Wayne Dyer writes one of the forwards to this book and has helped others get connected with this self-healing technology described in the novel. The book leads you to the technology available today. GET THE BOOk - Transform your life!!.
phenamenol!!!!!!.......2006-11-07
This book is amazing. You will be amazed by the main characters and their discoveries. It makes you think about your options in life and that the information you are given is not always the most accurate. It is a definite must read if you are one of those that believes there is more to life than what we are told and taught.
Must read!.......2006-08-13
This was a eye opening book that kept me coming back for more. The concept of this book was something I had never heard of before, but I became very open to all the ideas it had to share through the story being told. I highly recoomend this book.

Sanctuary???.......2007-08-06
What a Sanctuary!!!Where damaged people live and rape and murder going on. I had started this book and had the TV on Lifetime and lo and behold the Lifetime movie was Sanctuary. Okay so I watched it and not impressed but decided to finish the book. The book is tons better than the movie. However I had to skim the murder/rape scenes. Okay so I'm sqimmish! I'm wondering how many books can have this same scenario of the damaged people because their parents did show them love and etc, so they can't love and they shove people away from them. I have read several Nora Roberts books lately with this scenario. I'm reading Hidden Riches at the moment and same scenario. I think that is why I liked her newest book "High Noon" because she got away from that formula and had 2 strong people come together. The hero could have been damaged because of his childhood but didn't let it. I like this formula much better. Getting back to Sanctuary, it's an okay read but probably not one I would read again. Yesterday Lifetime showed all of Nora Roberts movies based on her books and there was not one as good as the book. Even the actors playing the parts weren't right to me after reading the books. I wouldn't have pictured them as the movie does. The one playing Nathan in Sanctuary didn't even come close to what I pictured reading the book. There were characters left out and the Mother was murdered by Nathan's father not his brother. Well as they say, it's based on the book;that's about all!Anyway, if you have seen the movie, read the book; it's better.
The formula is getting old..........2007-07-27
I used to enjoy Nora Roberts' books for their wry humor, interesting characters, and snappy dialog. But her plots have been growing more and more formulaic: Tough, gorgeous heroine with a successful professional life and a ton of baggage obstructing her relationships is stalked by a serial killer whose acts become more and more savage as the book continues, often to the point of being ridiculously over the top. The heroine's friends and family are slowly killed off before she finally realizes what is going on, leading to a surprisingly anticlimatic finale. For me to truly consider a book a mystery, it must be a challenge to deduce the culprit. I have been able to deduce the killer's identity so early on in these books that I'm just left to focus on the romance, and though Roberts still can write one heck of a steamy passage it gels uneasily with scenes of stomach-churning brutality. As in "Blue Smoke", I found the murder scenes in "Sanctuary" to be overdone to the point of tastelessness (and Roberts seems to have an off-putting fascination with rape and quasi-rape throughout this book). I'm also not one easily satisfied with the "he was crazy, that was why he did what he did, there's no logical reason" hook that these works hang on.
It seems as if Roberts is trying to write for the broadest market possible; she is losing me as a fan in the process.
Extremely Disappointing.......2007-03-29
I had high expectations for this novel. First, it is written by my favorite author, Nora Roberts and was given a four-star rating by Amazon reviewers, and second I discovered there had been a TV movie made based on this book. All this being said, I was looking forward to indulging in an excellent novel. I was gravely mistaken and very much disappointed. The story revolves around Sanctuary, a beautiful old Southern mansion (bed and breakfast) on the grounds of Little Desire Island off the coast of Georgia. Cottages inhabited by vacationers surround the main house on the island with its beautiful gardens, beaches and wooded areas. The Hathaway family own and run Sanctuary. Brian and Lexy are the resident owners, along with the help of their mother's cousin, Kate and father Sam. Jo Ellen Hathaway left the family business to make a name as a renowned photographer but as the story opens, she is getting photographs from an undisclosed source of her dead mother who disappeared some 20 years ago and the family never even thought she could have been murdered. They figured this loving wife and mother of three just walked out on them and stood by this belief, resenting and revolting in her memory. This method of guilty until proven otherwise was the first element that really didn't play right for me. Jo Ellen needs to get back to Sanctuary (after she suffers a breakdown as a result of the stalker and his photos) to try to find comfort and resolution with her family although none of them have ever been able to bond since the disappearance of their mother. The story goes on and on describing the secondary characters, Kirby Fitzsimmons (resident island doctor), Nathan Delaney (gifted architect, revisiting the island after spending one summer's childhood vacation), and Giff Verdon (island handyman) and really leads to very little action. I found that a big part of the excitement for the characters was drinking multiple cups of coffee morning, noon and night, smoking their cigarettes and relieving frustration with random sex. Two events posing undefined logic were the disappearance of everyone's fun-loving, great-to-be-with friend, Ginny - never really expounded upon and somewhat just left out on the line to dry and the reference to the questionable disappearance/death of Kyle Delaney, Nathan's brother. In this instance, Nathan and Jo Ellen start discussing the fact that possibly he could be alive and then the story drops. Even the ending didn't satisfy my need for that Nora Roberts thrill I am accustomed to enjoying. Being an avid Nora fan and knowing what great work she is capable of, I would not recommend this novel. Sanctuary could very likely turn the reader off to the extremely talented works of author, Nora Roberts, a/k/a J.D. Robb. Stories like "The Villa" and "Honest Illusions" are definitely worth reading as well as all of the J.D. Robb "In Death" series. Go out and get her latest in the series, "Innocent in Death," for a true taste of her talent.
Awesome book - pulls you in and doesn't let go!.......2006-07-27
I adore Nora Roberts books, particularly the Key Trilogy and Montana Sky, which even my husband enjoyed, but Sanctuary is by far my favorite, and has been for years. I do, however, prefer audio CD's and MP3's because of a long commute to work (and an absolute loathing of morning radio shows), neither of which are available in this title. I can't figure that one out - books published earlier are available in both CD and MP3, but not this one. Big time disappointment, I wish the publisher would rethink that.
Dreams Sometimes Do Come True........2006-07-12
We all seek sanctuary at one time or another, from family problems, childhood fears, career woes, personal nightmares all tempt us to run away and hide. J. E.'s mother had disappeared when she was only seven years old; something she could never forgive the most important person in her young life. My mother died when I was seven, so I can relate. But there was no sanctuary for me. It was just life, and I could never forgive her for leaving me behind like Jo. She grew up feeling that she had been abandoned. Only after her dream twenty years later of returning to the empty family inn named Sanctuary on the island of Desire in Georgia, and seeing herself on the other side, did she realize that her mother was dead.
Enter the stalker in her life with the pictures to prove he sometimes was close enough to touch her elbow. One photo in particular shows her long-lost mother naked and dead. Who took that picture and when? She returns "home" seeking answers to this quandry only to discover that he had followed her there. Growing up, I'd always been told I looked like my father as I had his dark brown eyes. But, at the funeral of my maternal grandmother after I was married with three children, my kinfolk all raved about how I was the spitting image of Lettie's photo which hung over her mother's bed. Even though she had beautiful, sad blue eyes and a lighter brown hair than my dark brown, I was about the same age then as she before the cancer took her away from us. I tried for years in vain to obtain that 5X7 photo.
Jo was the image of her dead mother and she was in danger as Brian closed in for the kill. Thank God, Nathan was there to protect and save her from the evils lurking in the Sanctuary. Nora Roberts was the first writer to be inducted into the Romance Writers of America Hall of Fame. Her stories keep one riveted to the page more than the mystery thrillers do.
Book Description
There are approximately seven million horses in America. Each year, over seventy thousand are abused, abandoned, and fated to slaughter by callous and irresponsible owners. With a heart as big as a pasture, author Melanie Bowles takes some of these horses into her sanctuary called Proud Spirit. Here, horses that arrive listless and broken find a home where they finally know safety.
The bond between horse and caretaker does not happen overnight. It hangs by a fine thread of trust that the author earns with endless patience and a full commitment to the well-being of the horses in her care. The horses, some of which have suffered severe abuse, astound her time and again with their ability to trust, return the love they are given, and enjoy the companionship of other horses.
You will meet a whole stableful of remarkable horses:
Dusty, a Thoroughbred who recovered from severe injuries to reveal a rambunctious personality and a knack for stealing hats;
Maddy, an old mare, and Dancer, a gallant Appaloosa, both of whom had been isolated for years but whose ecstatic first acquaintance at Proud Spirit was, mysteriously, like the reunion of two soul mates;
Annie, a little sorrel mare who will break your heart with her weary kindness and who found peace and compassion, at last, under an old oak tree in a pasture at Proud Spirit;
Wrangler, a Miniature whose premature separation from his dam turned him into a tiny tormentor. His rowdy innocence helped Marshal, a huge Palomino gelding with neurological trauma, become playful and engaged as he educated Wrangler in horsy manners. Horses of Proud Spirit is an homage to the spirit of these alluring creatures and a moving memoir of lessons learned in compassion, strength, and loss.

. . . knowing this story.......2007-09-21
Melanie and her husband, Jim, are to be commended for all their work with these wonderful, great, grand animals - HORSES! Horse lover all my life, but never worked with them although had one in early teens. Worked summer of '06 on horse slaughter bill which I got involved with while doing research on horse book I am writing - story of Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner of 1966 - Kauai King. Have been to rescue farms and send money as I have it to help support. From all the reviews of this book, Melanie, besides being a good woman with a tremendous heart, she must be a good writer also. I am going to order this book, but must admit that it may be a while before I read it. I am sure there will be lots of new stuff I will learn about, but the "stuff" that, at this time, I do not want to know more about, is how man has abused the horse - I, all to sadly, KNOW THIS STORY. I thank Melanie for her courage in writing this book, for herein, (and books like hers), lies any and all hope for better treatment of our wonderful horses - the love and respect they deserve, the rescue when this is not given. Again, to Melanie and Jim and all like them, all those special souls out there in this hard world, who when they hear of an abused or neglected horse (or any animal for that matter) will go and get them, bring them "home" in their arms as if these massive creatures were no more than a kitten and give them safe harbor and peace - THANK YOU! Shelby Staples - Virginia
If you think you love horses.......2007-08-11
If you love horses or even think you love horses, read this book. Sue can break your heart and heal it again on just one page. A great book for kids and adults, just starting with horses. Sue takes readers with her as she grows from rank beginner to one who not only loves horses but learns to understands and appreciates their amazing minds, hearts, and spirits.
Great book for animal lovers.......2007-07-05
I thought this book was really good, especially for people who love horses. The stories in each chapter are very interesting and different from each other, so you don't leave off on a chapter wondering what will happen next.
Great book!.......2007-06-27
I am involved with a horse rescue here in Michigan & bought the book after seeing the tv show about Proud Spirit on PBS. I can identify fully with this book - I was an inexperienced horse person & was thrilled to find out that the author was too when she started, and is from Michigan herself! The book is an easy read & will stir up emotional reactions from any animal lover. I have cried while reading this book several times - please keep in mind that I do horse rescue, so I've witnessed some of these things firsthand. The book is so well written in my opinion that you feel like you're there.
A Special Book by a Special Person.......2007-06-09
The Horses of Proud Spirit is really three stories in one. First, it's Melanie Sue Bowles' story as she tells us about her experiences with some of the first horses who came to live at Proud Spirit. We follow Melanie's progress from pure novice to knowledgeable caregiver, and she tells of her experiences just as if we were sitting on a porch, swapping horse stories with friends who are nonjudgmental because at one time or another in the course of our own learning process, we've been in Melanie's shoes. Melanie becomes our friend on the very first page of The Horses of Proud Spirit, and that's because she has the ability to make us feel her horror and disgust at what humans do to horses, whether out of ignorance or pure malice.
In what I consider the second story within the story, Melanie tells us the tale of each horse, unfolding the sequence of events in her comfortable, down-to-earth manner, even when the events are tragic. We rejoice with her when the outcome is good and weep with her when a horse is lost.
The third story is ours, the reader's, because if we've been insulated from the terrible things humans do to horses, Melanie opens our eyes to reality, so perhaps, if faced with signs of abuse, we will be quicker to take action. For those of us having cared for an abused horse (and hopefully, never as many as Mel and her husband, Jim) we share our understanding of what she goes through with each horse.
Depending upon whether you're new to horses or an old-timer, you'll either learn what's right when it comes to being responsible for the care of a horse, or, like what happened with me, Melanie's story brought back warm comforting memories of horses I've known in my lifetime.
You will enjoy The Horses of Proud Spirit and the way in which Melanie tells her story. You will turn the last page and wish she would tell you more. You will also use up one or more boxes of tissues by the time you close the back cover. And, you will never again take your horses for granted.

The Dragons Tamed.......2007-03-08
Sanctuary (2005) is the third Fantasy novel in the Dragon Jousters series, following Alta. In the previous volume, Kaleth escaped to the Bedu and learned to become a Mouth of the Gods. The Blue People also helped Kaleth find the Lost City, which they renamed Sanctuary. Later, Kiron and Aket-ten took the twins Marit and Nofret to the desert edge to rejoin Kaleth in his Sanctuary.
Kiron and Aket-ten spread dust into the winds to blight the tala plants throughout Alta and Tia. When the tainted tala wore off, the drugged dragons shed their riders and escaped into the wild. Kiron and his wing outfought Kashet and took Ari with them to Sanctuary.
In this novel, a great sandstorm hits Sanctuary and all the dragons take shelter within a large building. All the dragons have been told of the coming storm and the younger ones are very nervous. Only Kashet and Avatre are unconcerned, having prior experience with such desert storms. The winds scream and roar around the building and through the cracks, but eventually all -- human and dragon -- fall asleep.
When they awake, Sanctuary has gained two major additions: a great manor and a temple complex. The gods have prepared the city for new arrivals, for Lord Ya-tiren, his family and the household servants appear shortly thereafter. They move immediately into the manor.
The temple complex has outbuildings that can be altered into dragon pens; with lots a work, each dragon will have a sandpit of its own and the rider will have private quarters next to the wallow. No more shared sleeping arrangement for the dragons or barracks for the riders.
Other refugees trickle into Sanctuary over the next few weeks. Among there are a contingent of Tian priests and priestesses. They are fleeing a few strangers who have ousted the previous advisors to the Great King and have started inviting gifted priests to the royal court. The bodies of some of these guests have turned up in the river.
With the Tian priests are Haraket, Baken and the few remaining Tian dragon boys. Soon the priests of Thet have worked the magic that keeps sand wallows heated throughout the night. They even create a cold room to preserve leftover meats from the hunts.
Kiron initiates a search for nesting dragons. While most escaped Altan dragons returned to the swamps, many of the fleeing Tian dragons settled into the desert around Sanctuary. Kiron has the Bedu and dragon boys looking among the hills and tells his riders to keep an eye open for nests while they are hunting.
In this story, Kiron finds a long lost city in the hills near Avatre's hunting grounds. As he is showing the city to Aket-ten, they also discover a nesting dragon nearby. After some consideration, he decides that the dragon is Coresan, the mother of Avatre. The dragon also seems to recognize him as her former dragon boy.
When Nofret decides that she needs a dragon of her own, Kiron and Aket-ten introduce her to Coresan. As the eggs hatch, Nofret provides food for the hatchlings. Eventually, Coresan accepts Nofret as a strangely misshapen dragon and even leaves the fledglings in her care.
Highly recommended for Lackey fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of dragon taming, evil machinations, benign conspiracies and a touch of romance.

Slow to start..........2006-11-06
This book is a bit slow to start and has a lot of set-up going on (which makes some sense given that it isn't the last book in this series). It also requires the reader to remember a lot from the previous books, so if it's been a while since you've read those you might want to go back. Once you get into it, though, it gets better and is worth the read.
Meh.......2006-10-03
When Lackey is at her best she produces entertaining stories about sympathetic characters, set in well drawn imaginary worlds, which do a fantastic job of pulling the reader completely into the story while reading.
At her worst she produces overly preachy stories with overdrawn characters and contrived plots.
This third entry in the Dragon Jousters series is unfortuntely one of the latter. Our heroes are noble, pure of heart, selfless, brave, philosophically introspective and able to do no wrong. The villains are all sleazy, power hungry, totally amoral child murderers, and there really aren't many characters that fall in between. The plot happens, but I found it difficult to care how the books ended.
The previous two books in the series were entertaining, following Kiron's journey from an abused serf to a respected dragon boy, to a leader and a rebel. In this book he is back to following other people's lead and doing what he is told. He does, however, spend a great deal of time in philosophical musings about the situation and various people's relationships.
The saga ends.......2006-06-27
Sadly, the tale of Ari and Kiron (Vetch) ends here. When all is said and done, you can imagine what will happen next. The colors come alive in the mind as Mercedes Lackey describes the events of the story. It is another outstanding read!
A satisfying continuation of the series.......2006-06-17
I had been afraid that Lackey would not continue this series past "Alta", and I was extremely pleased that she did. I found Sanctuary, the city, interesting and thought the adjustments the dragon riders and others living there had to make were plausible. I was very glad to see the reappearance of characters (including dragons) I had liked in "Joust", and I liked the way Lackey handled the issue of tensions between Altans and Tians. I was particularly satisfied by the answering of questions from earlier in the series, such as why it was important for Ari to join the group in Sanctuary.
I did miss the rich development of characters that "Alta" had, and I was disappointed that there was a mix-up of two characters, with Gan being the beautiful character in this book. The story did tell what happened to the families of some of the riders, but I also wanted to know about the others. However, this series has become one of my favorites. I have enjoyed "Sanctuary" a number of times already, and I look forward very much to "Aerie" when it comes out.

Sanctuary.......2007-09-08
This isn't really the type of book I would read if the author wasn't highly recommended... it seems like everyone who comes into the library is a Beverly Lewis fan. So I figured, why not try something by her? And I did...
I'm not usually a religious person... but I like the way this book portrays faith. The characters talk about their beliefs but don't do it in an annoying way; they don't shove it down the reader's throats. Instead of trying to force me to believe, the book simply opens my eyes.
That being said, this wasn't a completely religious book. Beverly Lewis is known for her Christian works, and this is no exception... except I actually enjoyed the story. It wasn't really all that (at least to me... someone more spiritual than me would enjoy it) but it's still a good read.
In true Beverly Lewis fashion.......2007-06-05
(Part of The Postcard/The Crossroad series)
She has the perfect life: a beautiful house on the water, a loving husband, and her painting. And after spending years looking over her shoulder, Mellie thinks she's finally safe. But then that perfect world is shattered. When she's out with a friend and spots "that face," Mellie knows she has to run.
Leaving her house and husband behind, Mellie finds herself in Amish country--at the home of Lela Deninger, a single Amish woman with a room to rent. Mellie's husband is truly lost without her and can't figure out why she left. With the help of a close friend, he discovers that he is closer to the answer than he realizes. As Mellie waits with Lela for a phone call that will tell her what to do, she finds herself connecting with God in a way she never thought possible. Then when she finds out a depressing truth about her husband, Mellie realizes her true Sanctuary is in the Lord.
I truly enjoyed this book and read it with ease. Lewis has a wonderful way of drawing the reader in and holding their attention!
The author was born in the heart of Amish country--Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She didn't start writing about that area until her children were in middle school, with her first book published in 1993.
New York Times bestseller Beverly Lewis is a very prolific writer. Once again she has taken her enthusiastic fans deep into the world of the Amish. Her adult fiction includes: Annie's People series, Abram's Daughters series, The Heritage of Lancaster County series The Postcard/The Crossroad series plus her youth fiction, The Cul-de-Sac Kids series, Girls Only (GO!) series, ages 8-13 and Holly's Heart series and Summerhill Secrets series ages 11-14.
Armchair Interviews says: Beverly Lewis does it again.
Sacrafices.......2007-01-19
I liked this.It was once of the first ones I read.I passed it on to my daughter immediately and we were hooked on her books.Nadia Rehmani
Good book.......2005-10-20
This is not one of my favorite books by Beverly. Only because it is hard to follow. One minute you are reading about Melissa and then the next chapter you are reading about Ryan.I also dont understand why everybook that Beverly writes is about the Amish. I really like her books. But I with that she would write something that doesnt talk about the Amish
Too formulaic for a usually good author........2005-03-23
Realizing that Lewis's books can often be preachy, they are still mostly enjoyable with well-drawn characters and good plots. This one is sub-par for Lewis, however. The plot is contrived and the preaching comes very heavy-handed. I found the Christianity to be inserted in odd ways and conversions less than believable. I usually love Lewis's work and her Amish characters in particular, but this one was definitely not her best work. Perhaps it was the influence of her husband? I'm glad I've got the newest in the Abram's Daughters series to look forward to or I'm afraid my interest in Lewis would end with this one.

crimes against humanity.......2007-07-27
They say a picture's worth a thousand words, but no words can describe, let alone explain, the horrific crimes against humanity documented in this photographic history of lynching in America--and not "just" hangings, but burnings, castration, mutilation, and sadistic tortures like cutting unborn babies from their mother's womb. Nor do the four introductory essays (pp. 7-44) and the notes to the 98 photographic plates make for easy reading. This is a significant if revolting part of American history, even if high school history courses never mention it.
"In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century," writes Leon Litwack, "two or three black southerners were hanged, burned at the stake, or quietly murdered every week. In the 1890s, lynchings claimed an average of 139 lives each year, 75 per cent of them black. The numbers declined in the following decades, but the percentage of black victims rose to 90 percent. Between 1882 and 1968, an estimated 4,742 blacks met their deaths at the hands of lynch mobs." These are only the documented cases, and they don't include the "legal lynchings" of perverted "justice," or private posses on "nigger hunts."
Some lynchings were done in isolated and remote areas by psychopaths. But as this volume shows, they were not only public events but public spectacles that were advertised, described by lurid media headlines ("colored man roasted alive"), and attended by thousands of voyeuristic spectators. They were carried out by and celebrated by leading citizens, state and federal congressmen, and leaders in business and church. "Our American Christians," wrote the anti-lynching activist Ida B. Wells, "are too busy saving the souls of white Christians from burning in hell-fire to save the lives of black ones from present burning in fires kindled by white Christians." There was no due process of law in most of these lynchings, nor any attempt to hide the identity of the executioners. The US postal service was happy to mail commemorative post cards with pictures of lynchings. Trains provided free services to the spectacles. Yes, there were lone dissenting voices, but far too few. For a narrative history of lynching see Philip Dray, At the Hands of Persons Unknown; The Lynching of Black America.
Does the Job--We All Need to "See" This Book's Pages.......2007-07-04
There are enough reviews here so that my summative review is not necessary. I will only say that this is a powerful book, and it reminded me of General Eisenhower's order that all those living in the vicinity of the death camps be marched past the stacked bodies so they could see what their abdication of morality had allowed to happen.
This is mostly a book of photographs. If you want deeper text, including a spectacular (unintended pun)chapter on "Looking" and how it was the crowds that validated "spectacle lynching," then you must also buy Imagery of Lynching: Black Men, White Women, and the Mob. The title is misleading, but the content of that book is not--that is the deep academic and psychological review that complements this book.
If yoy only wish to buy one book, of lasting value for generations, buy this one. If you can afford two and want to study the underlying social and psychological environments that allowed whites to treat blacks as if they were animals, buy both.

Gruesome.......2007-07-03
The pictures alone in this book tell a tragic story of the inhumanity this country had to offer. I have not been able to look at more than a few pages at a time. Yet, it is important that i keep trying to remember the hatred that existed and was easily passed down to future generations. Now, I have my own "future generation" who can one day understand his history and how it applies to modern society.
Very important book.......2007-06-08
This is a very important historical document for U.S. history. The author has chosen a few lynchings and gathered photos, postcards etc. of the victims, and of the spectators/bystanders/perpetrators. The collection of many photos for each incident (of the lynching, of the victim while still alive posing for a studio portrait etc., and the reporting of the individual histories) humanize each victim by telling a bit of their personal story, and thus underscore the utter horror of these lynchings. But what is particularly important (and thus, chilling) are the photos of the crowds gathered around the lynched victims, and the expressions on their faces (or some of the photos showing literally thousands of people watching) --there is such a range of expressions that seem so familiar (from disgust, anger, to pride and simple curiosity). These photos are chilling because they remind one of how easiliy mobs can form, that these lynching mobs are cut from the same fabric as one's contemporary neighbors, and these photos recals how in Nazi Germany, the atrocities of the holocaust were made possible by the support and complacency of the everyday person.
There is a profound emotional tension between the photos which effectively cause one to empathize with the lynching victims, and the photos which depict the normalcy, the everyday quality of the mobs surrounding the victims. They remind me of how dangerous society can be....
Terrorism in the United States.......2007-05-15
Not taught in the schools and not publicized internationally, the reality of citizenship or living in the United States of America has been full time terrorism if you are one of the victims or intended to be victims portrayed in this book

Just Introduced to Beverly Lewis novels.......2007-08-06
I received this book as a gift some time ago & put off reading it, thinking it was geared more toward female readers than male readers. I suppose that's true, but it doesn't matter much. I started reading The Postcard & finished within a few days. Now I have started reading The Crossroads at first to see what happens to the main characters next. This book is a good read, not even close to what I imagined it would be!
What A Book!.......2007-01-19
This was another one of her terrific books. She always writes in such a way that you can't wait to read the next one. Nadia Rehmani-writer of Sharper Than A Two Edged Sword-that can be found right her also on Amazon.
Book Description
For readers who want to go beyond feng shui to the next level of home enhancement, this beautifully illustrated book looks to the mythology and psychology of the home, while showing imaginative and practical ways to use light, color, and sound to give any living space a welcoming and relaxing ambience.
Designing and arranging spaces that improve the quality of life-spiritually, emotionally, and physically-can make a home, be it a spacious house or a single room, a refuge from a stressful world. Readers will find the process of improving their home to be simple and fun as they follow the book's formulas. For example, the "Loose Living" chapter shows how people with no sewing skills can enhance a room by swathing and draping furniture in fresh fabric as an instant cover-up for a battered sofa-or use fabric as an ally to filter the light atmospherically or conceal a dismal view. The "Found Objects" chapter shows how finds from junk shops, flea markets, and other secondhand sources can be transformed into treasured keepsakes. Instructions for arranging the home to attract success and energy and clear clutter painlessly are among the many easy-to-implement tips presented.

Great approach, with a bit of everything.......2005-02-21
This book pulls together a variety of spiritual concepts - feng shui, goddesses, purification/smudging, creating altars, use of stones and crystals, aromatherapy/scents in the home, and colors. It's really a great overview. Activities like spring cleaning and decluttering are covered as are specific rooms like bedrooms, kitchen, etc. There are some terrific photographs throughout the book which really inspire. I like that the author put all of this together into one book. I have other books that talk around all this - one on feng shui, one on crystals, one on potpourri, etc. This book ties them together and I feel like now I can go back to those other books and apply them better.
One of the best "sacred space" books I've read.......2001-02-13
This book was a real "find" for me. I have several books on feng shui and space clearing, and this one was intuitive, yet practical at the same time. It is spiritual but loaded with remedies for clearing one's space on this earth while we are here! I never thought to talk to my house, yet it makes perfect sense! It reads almost like a novel and is just full of information. I wish I could go home from work now and continue with the "read"!
Great Overview of different spiritual aspects of home.......2000-03-30
When I first looked over this book I did not get into it. But as I began to buy new furniture for a new home and pulled together my tastes and sytles (The Domain Book is great for that!), I found this book to be a wonderfully insightful book that helped me to consider Feng Shui and blessing my home and many other spiritual and tangible aspects of this place called my home. I have ordered a second one today for a friend.
No pictures, but lots of good info........1999-08-27
This book is a good introduction to lots of new age stuff (and common sensical stuff, too) relating to homes. Alexander gives recommendations of other books if you want to dig deeper into a particular topic.
Lots of information but not enough pictures.......1999-06-26
I enjoy reading, but I am a very visual person and was disappointed in this book because while it offers suggestions that make sense, it takes longer to get through the book since it is practically all words and very few pictures for inspiration.
