Book Description
From initial concept through to finishing touches, for the first time, Boris and Julie give an in-depth description of how they paint their masterpieces, taking the reader through every stage of the creative process. As well as teaching the main techniques, the premiere fantasy-art team shows the reader how to use a wide variety of media to create a whole range of different types of painting, and explain how they create the effects for which they are so renowned, such as Julie’s legendary “metal flesh,” with its mix of fluidity and hardness contrasting with the sensual softness of the skin. Illustrated throughout in full color, the Practical Guide to Fantasy Art includes step-by-step photographs that Boris and Julie have taken as they’ve worked as well as a selection of their finished art appealing to art students and fantasy-art admirers alike.

Great Help........2007-01-04
Truly helpful and a Great Help with learning textures and techniques from professional artists. Certain pictures of Boris Vallejo's and Julie Bell's work are shown in a step by step process that you can follow in your own works. If you are not interested in learning how to paint this book is also a great collection to admire, either way you will not be disappointed. It's truly helped me with my digital painting I cannot wait until I have the free time to practice the techniques shown in the book.
genuine sham.......2006-10-06
The claim that step by step the artists reveal their secrets is a sham, they reveal nothing, and their text is just airy rap about nothing. The artwork must be their left overs, including several pages devoted to a tedious ad campain for a fruit juice. In addition there are several ridiculous repeated images just for fill out. A shoddy and hastily book put together for self promotion. It's amazing how two such capable fantasy artists dont have the IMAGINATION to put together the genuine article. Buy this only if you are a die hard fan with no sense of discrimination!
Boris/ Bell rulez!.......2006-03-15
painting technics and a lot of work, and coposition tips. Its not for beginners , but essential!
Boris reveals more but not all.......2006-02-25
I'm hungry for Boris's painting technique. The first book of his was enlightening but skipped the critical part of his process, rendering the final product. This book gets closer to revealing his and Judy's magic but still left me wondering how many things are accomplished. It is an essential book for anyone fascinated by Boris and Judy's painting technique just don't expect to be shown how they do everything.
great tips.......2006-01-22
This book could help any artist; no need to have an interest in Fantasy. Lots of good tips and the art is great. I found it inspiring and anxious to try out all the good advice.

Book Description
This unique book presents solid composition and design instruction with an emphasis on fun and creativity. The first half of the book focuses on traditional realism while the latter examines more experimental art. In both cases, the underlying lesson is that good composition and design is the underlying foundation of any successful painting, whether super-realistic or non-objective.
Author Pat Dews illustrates this concept by showing, step-by-step, how successful painters in a variety of styles and mediums (including watercolor, water media, pastel, collage and more) use these principles to create gorgeous works of art. A few of the artists sampled design while they paint, always experimenting, using various techniques to decide what will work before committing to a final composition. Others design their compositions before they start painting. Some combine the two approaches. Readers will discover that they can compose beautiful paintings while being as creative as they want to be.
Pat Dews is a signature member of AWS and NWS and is a very popular workshop instructor. She is the author of Creative Discoveries in Watermedia. She lives in Hobe Sound, Florida.

Have enjoyed using this as a reference after observing her in a demo.
Dews is not a good painter.......2006-11-23
Gorky was famous for saying :" I am not interested in poor art for poor people." This is the worst of the 'how to books'. It is simply dumb art for dumb people!
very involved.......2005-10-27
the book teaches a lot, and it's great to read how to finish started works. however, you need a background in abstract work to understand her lessons. I have no such background, and her descriptions of the works in progress confused me. as well, her projects require a lot of specialized art supplies - inks and pigments and stuff that I don't have lying around. the projects also require a lot of space - easels w/ full sheets of watercolor paper, storage for scraps, etc. if you want to spend the $$, go ahead. I'm in a dorm and don't have the background, space, or $$ to do the projects.
A Must For Your Art Library!.......2005-07-16
if you are interested in composition and design, this is a must for your art library. clear, consice, immensely readable, pat dews acts as your personal guide! while her focus may seem in the "abstract vein", there is something for everyone here, no matter what your interest is. warmly written, i found myself reading every word. now that's something for a visual book! her explanations, photos and critiques were helpful and made me want to run to the studio to start my own wonderful discoveries!
Well Worth Waiting For!.......2003-06-19
This is one of the best art instruction books that is now available. It is an excellent follow-up to Creative Discoveries in Watermedia published in 1998.Creative Composition & Design is a workshop in book format. Pat Dews warm positive attitude comes across on each page. The book is very well designed with excellent color photographs of art that will inspire you to create. The tips that are listed on various pages are very helpful. The section showing how different artists work on design and composition is an excellent way to gain additional ideas for your own work. The critiques shown of student work places you right into the workshop experience. You will see how paintings are resolved. You will learn a lot from this book and return to it often.I highly recommend this book-it was worth waiting for.If you are unable to attend a workshop with Pat Dews this is the next best thing. If you have been fortunate enough to take a workshop with Pat Dews this book will act as an excellent follow-up.

Not only does her book explain what to do in a clear, easy-to-follow manner, it explains why.

Best Airbrush/Custom Painting Book.......2007-07-08
This would have to be the best book I've read about custom painting and airbrushing on cars/bikes. The book is great for the beginner (like me) who wants to know about airbrushes, suitable paints, and the techniques to start creating a custom paint job.
How To Master Airbrush Painting Techniques .......2007-02-02
Very comprehensive. I felt the author was having a personal casual discussion with me about what I wanted to learn instead of just documenting technical information and techniques. Teaching painting techniques in writing must be a tough task, but I think the author did a good job.
This book is a great buy!.......2007-01-19
I'll start off by saying I keep picking up this book over and over. The Troubleshooting chapter is so detailed. It covers nearly every problem I have ever had with an airbrush. I have other airbrush books and none of them have this much "fix it" info. That one chapter has saved me so much time and stress.
The rest of the book is great also. One of the learning chapters has a really fun exercise that was so easy but gave me really cool results.
The book is very easy to follow and the examples in the book can be applied to almost any airbrush project. She uses a common sense approach that takes away the complications that come up when I'm trying to learn a new technique.
And unlike my other airbrush books, it has lots of photos. The example chapters have many photos that cover each little step.
It also tells how to get great ideas to airbrush.
And I really appricated the way she also tells how to deal with how to not get discouraged when things go wrong. How to deal with the stress that comes from trying to be be artistic.
I have another of JoAnn's books and while I enjoyed that one, I like this one better.
It is also a large book with nearly 200 pages. I feel this book was a great buy.

Good advice, well organized.......2007-05-03
I was very impressed with this book. The side tabs make it easy to go directly to the section you want. Advice was excellent and well presented.
Extraordinary watercolor, great teacher.......2007-01-03
A beautifully printed hard cover book by an extraordinary watercolor artist. The book is filled with outstanding examples of landscapes, cityscapes from all over the world. In addition to being an inspired World class watercolor artist, Robert Wade is also a great teacher, the book is filled with practical advise and hands on lessons on color mixing, painting people, skies, glazing, location painting and many other subjects.Just to be able to look at his outstanding paintings would easily justify buying this book.
Understanding Watercolor.......2006-11-04
Excellent handbook for the serious watercolorist. Robert Wade has a great approach to some of the more difficult aspects of painting with watercolor. He is brief, to the point, yet his explanations make sense! Enjoyable reading and a great reference tool.
I wish I discovered this earlier!.......2006-08-13
What a wonderful book with terrific instructions and insights. Replaces 20 books in my collection which don't come close to the wisdom this book provides.
My favorite watercolor book.......2006-06-25
I have a library of over 60 watercolor books, and this is by far my favorite. I also own all of Wades's tapes, and his new CD. I find them to be an extension of the book. I took a workshop from a famous watercolor teacher who had us doing wash on top of wash. She must have gotten the idea from Wade as he has a section on just that topic. He covers washes on top of finished paintings that changes the character of the painting completely. A fasinating book that I return to over and over again.

The best companion for an artist.......2006-07-28
As a fine arts professional and art teacher, I've bought hundreds of drawing and painting books extracting the best.
In Tim Deibler's "Capturing the seasons in Oils"I have extracted almost all the parts of the book soo useful they are!
The book have treasures of basic and indispensable topics as in Chapter 1 "The four key elements of painting" - explaining Shape, Value, Color and Edge ( The edge part its wonderfully detailed).
In "Painting methods" Tim not only describes the techniques but shows the thing with terrific illustrations!
In "plein air painting" You have a fine selection of equipment and delightful titles as "I'm outside, Now what?"
On the last part of the book you have precious step by step demonstrations with detailed materials as paints, brushes and other supplies in little tips boxes.
A clear up to the beginners and the advanced!
If you buy this book I'm sure that by itself it will be your best companion and instructor for long long time !
EXCELLENT!.......2006-02-18
I have greatly enjoyed all the works by this artist. His instructional video of this title is right up there at the top of all art videos. I've never seen an artist paint so fast and loose, and tie it all together into such inspiring pieces. His mastery of color and how he does his mixing is exciting and quite unique. Never seen anything like it.
Worth every penny!!
Sloppy.......2006-01-29
Too Loose and sloppy
Tim's DVD by the same title is especially bad. The production is good but Tim's technique is quite sloppy even for quick studies.
Better choices would be "14 Formulas for Painting Fabulous Landscapes" by Barbara Nuss and "Painting Better Landscapes" by Margaret Kessler other notable publications by Gregg Kreutz, David Leffel and Richard Schmid would be a wise investment.
Beautiful and colorful.......2005-10-05
I was very inspired by the vibrant paintings in this book. This book has a compilation of a large number landscape paintings created by the author. The artist has demonstrated the steps required to create different effects and seasons using various techniques. Some more detail into these techniques would be excellent. For example, how to create the look of branches of trees against the bright sunlight.
A solid painter.......2005-02-16
OK so a lot of books by this publisher are kind of lightweight but this is a nice exception. Tim Deibler has a lot of painting and color knowledge and shares it in this book.
His palette is spare but he gets miles out of it. He really knows how to mix color and he brings a freshness to each work. He's not one of those painters that keeps repeating the same color formula.
This is a well done book with exceptional color reproductions.

I would recommend this book to anyone serious about attempting to paint their own car and getting the job done right.
5 Star Painting Tips.......2007-03-26
I found this book to be very informative, especially in the details that you can't get in conversations with experts. something about writing them down. Thank you very much. I just successfully painted my old truck

Good Book,with current info.......2006-11-03
Good book filled with current info on correct painting procedures. This book is very useful for all levels of body shop personnel or just a backyard painter.
how to paint your car.......2006-07-27
Typical over load on words pertaining to auto body shop repairs and prep for painting,"but lacks in information on painting a car. Out of 159 pages of print there is only 6 pages that actually decscribes anything that ressembles painting. I wish i had known this before i wasted my money. I would not recommend this book.

Very useful.......2006-10-12
This book presents some fine instruction and some fine illustrative paintings. The best part, for me, is that Ms. Lewis shows many color mixtures used to achieve many of the specific colors shown in her paintings. You can learn from this book.

Add collage watercolor for intersting & beautiful results.......1999-10-25
This book delves into the fascinating technique of adding collage elements to watercolor paintings. Basically, this is adding bits of paper of various shapes, textures & colors to the surface to enhance the painting over them.
Experimentation to develop a personal style is stressed here. Basic principles of texture, layering, contrast and color are explored first. Then you see how these elements are incorporated into finished paintings.
The author is an accomplished master of this technique. Many examples of his work are shown in progress & completed. He emphasizes throughout how artists of any level in any medium can apply these concepts to their work.
Whether or not you decide to emulate Brommer's work, this book is a great springboard of ideas and ways of looking at the painting process. It is filled with solid and helpful ideas.

Customer Reviews:
How Does He Make a Living ?.......2007-04-11
In the opening of the book, the artist mentions that he dropped out of art classes because of his instructors. I think he should have continued his art classes. I don't know if his paintings are meant to be just illustrative and are not real representations of what he does because I've seen his work before and it's not comparable to what is in this book.
If I had to pay for his instructional teaching, then I would demand my money back. The only reason I haven't returned this book is that I misplaced the Amazon invoice and packing materials. In all honesty, I must say that my first oil painting I ever painted turned out better than anything this artist has in his book, and that was without any previous or prior knowledge, and I don't consider myself to be a great artist.
Painting is like common sense - you either have it, or you don't.
A small epiphany!.......2004-02-08
I have read a good number of books on painting and this one is head and shoulders above the rest. I experienced an immediate improvement in the quality of my painting after reading this book.
Some of the things I found valuable were Goerschner's explanation of how he achieves color harmony through the use of four "grays," the role of dynamic and static shapes in a composition, and his annotated "paint-on" critiques.
This book contains complete and well rounded instruction -- I can't recommend it enough!
It's just OK.......2002-10-03
It's more suitable for beginners. There is not much information. There are some good suggestions. The book title attracted me. It's pretty basic.
Finally -- a "freeing your creativity" book that works.......2002-01-07
I've been painting off and on for 50 years. This book is the best I've read, bar none, on how to free up your artistic creativity. I've read it through twice and keep it handy as a reference. The ideas within are expressed with simplicity and great skill, making the book a delight to read. The book is definitely a keeper. I highly recommend it for any serious oil or acrylic artist.
Energetic and Inspirational.......1999-12-05
I am using this book (along with Kevin Macpherson's "Fill Your Oil Paintings with Light and Color" and Charles Sovek's "Oil Painting -Develop Your Natural Ability") as a foundation for my self-directed study in oil painting.
Goershner's understanding of design and color, and his enthusiasm and clarity of teaching makes him a must-read for serious students of painting. My hope is to become as masterful as he is in his paintings: he manages to intrigue the viewer immediately, and uses superb compositional and color methods to elate and inspire, and leave the viewer wanting more.
Through step by step examples in the book, he explains why his paintings work so well, and how you can develop the same competence. I particularly enjoyed his critiques of 12 student paintings which he then improves and explains why they now look so much better. What a superb way to learn!
I've definitely become a Goershner fan and will be working with this book often.
