What fun!.......2007-06-27
These are classic books that expand imagination. How could you not love them? I especially like how they encourage kids to draw without making it *too* detail oriented. (Alot can be achieved with a few simple lines!)
Every child WILL love to create and draw!.......2002-07-30
As a child who loved to draw - but was all "thumbs" in drawing - Emberley's Thumbprintbook was an amazing gift. Suddenly, I could duplicate the art in a drawing book and then go on to create my own shapes and creations. As I got older, I moved onto his other wonderful art books (such as Red, Puple, Orange, Green), but my thumbprints always remained my favorite.
This is a simple but enlivening art book for preschool and elementary school aged kids. I used it over 25 years ago and it is still a huge success with kids today. Don't miss it!
Thumbodies are the best!.......2002-07-30
This is one of the most simple and entertaining art books to be found for the younger set, or those who just love to doodle. I am fourteen, and I still enjoy pulling this book out to create thumbprint pictures with my siblings. All you need is an ink pad, some paper, and a pen to begin making the fun characters Mr. Emberley presents here, leaving the kitchen table much cleaner than it would be after finger painting. And since the pictures consist of your thumbprint and a few simple lines and dots, children can begin trying to make these as soon as they are able to grasp a pencil.
Once you get started, the possibilities are endless, both on and off of paper - we recently made a T-Shirt for a friend's new baby with our thumbprint drawings all over it and the words "Thumbody loves you!" Like in all of Ed Emberley's books, the images shown are only starting points to encourage additional creative ideas to come forth from wee Picassos everywhere. I would highly recommend this for all toddlers.
FOR ANY CHILD AFRAID OF ART............2001-08-30
For any child afraid he or she cant draw well.... just buy them this book, and watch how much pride they have in what they can accomplish. This book is very basic and shows little characters you can make with a thumbprint (or circle or blob) but dont let your "limited adult imagination" think that is just a few things... there are TONS of things you can draw!!!!!! and they are very easy. I think this is a perfect first drawing book...or for a child who is already convinced that "I cant draw" i hear kids say that and i think its so sad.... this book is really a positive thing :)
A great one for younger audiences........2000-11-28
All the Emberly books are worthwhile, and this one is definitely skewed toward the younger side of the 4-8 age group. Even younger than four will enjoy this. If they can hold a pencil and draw dots and lines, they can make drawings. In fact, younger kids might enjoy just making the thumbprints and watching you turn them into people and animals.
Older kids may grow tired of it quickly but that's okay, becuse the Green, Orange, Red and Purple Emberly books are for them!

terrific simple ideas to inspire.......2002-05-12
I teach art to elementary students and have used many of the
wonderful ideas in this book: making a truck out of an envelope, drawing catepillars, making crayoned paper snowflakes, and a loopy snake paper sculpture(big hit with the students). The price is great for all of the inspiring ideas.

Ed Emberley's Halloween Drawing Book by Ed Emberley.......2001-05-30
My son's favorite holiday if Halloween and he loves to draw. He is always trying to get me to draw him pictures. Before we got the book I could hardly draw a stick figure, now my 4yr old son and I can draw great pictures. We have already enjoyed hours of fun with this book.
Excerpts from the Big Orange Book.......2001-03-06
OK, I'm a big fan of Emberly, as should be apparent to anyone who's read any of my other reviews, but the salient detail about this book was left out of the other reviews: It consists entirely and only of excerpts from the Big Orange books. You don't really need this if you have the Orange book.
Perhaps worse is that it's not even =all= the Halloween material from the Big Orange book, so even if you wanted to get it because your kids were fighting over who got to use the orange book, this may not help. It contains none of the monsters from the green or purple books, and despite the color of the cover, there are no red pictures. Just orange.
This might be a good book to introduce someone to Emberly's work, though around Halloween, being cheap.
A fun filled book for children of all ages.......2000-12-06
This book is a true inspiration for children of all ages. It evokes creativity and aids in the developement of artistic skills- besides, it's just fun! Any child will have many hours of fun with this book!

Customer Reviews:
My son loves this book!.......2003-12-30
My son got this book for Christmas last year when he was 5 yrs old and still likes to draw from it. This is a great stencil book for boys that love trucks and construction equipment, encourages those fine motor skills. I only wish that I could find more similar to this to add to his collection.
Even keeps my highly spirited child occupied.......2001-12-30
My son, who loves trucks of all kinds, received this book as a gift. Because he is only 3 1/2 years old and can't keep still for a minute, I didn't think this book would keep his attention for very long. I was wrong. He loves this book. I worked with him on doing the stenciling for awhile, and then he just started doing it on his own. There are some trucks with parts that are quite intricate and even tricky for an adult to stencil, but that doesn't matter. When he saw the parts he stecilled, he was very excited about what he accomplished. Coloring in the finished products are fun too. There are ten stencils in all and each stencil page describes in quick detail the various parts of the equipment. When you turn the stencil page, it overlaps the real picture of the truck and is followed by a brief description of it. I think as my son gets older, he'll even enjoy it more. This book is quite a unique gift for a boy, or girl for that matter. I highly recommend it.

very cute.......2007-01-09
This book is VERY cute, just as the cover conveys. There are lots of good ideas for a young girl wanting to draw ballerinas and princesses. The stickers are a nice added plus. My daughter who is 6 is enjoying it. I think girls 4-8 would enjoy it.
Great for Girls Who Love To Draw Princessy Things!.......2006-12-27
My 8 year old daughter LOVES this book. She immediately started following the directions for drawing "Princesses in Gowns" and had instant success. The step-by-step is not bogged down with extra explanations that might be of great interest to older children, but would just be taking up space for kids who want to dive in and draw. There are plenty of variations on each drawing to give kids the idea of improvising on the basics, both in the poses of the figures and in the embellishment on clothing, hair, etc. My daughter considered a few of the author's variations for gown embellishment, then pulled out one of her K.Y. Craft books for more ideas, because, as she put it, she had finally drawn a princess with a gown that was good for decorating. There is a whole page of hairstyle ideas, all kinds of inspiration! Great springboard for creativity!
There are also paper-cutting activities, stickers, hints to help when using other media (paints, felt tip pens, etc.), and everything is kept to such a simple level that even a child who thinks she can't draw or has been repeatedly told in school that she is not good at art can look at these with confidence, try them out, and get wonderfully rewarding results! My daughter loved to draw until she went to public school. These books have let her have back her love of drawing.
I have tried the Ed Emberly books (good, cute, just not very girlish), the Draw Write Now program, and a long list of others. I have been trying everything for the past few years to help this child overcome the feedback she received from teachers ("too slow, never finishes anything, not using the right colors, not using enough colors, poor handwriting, poor drawing, uses stick figures," etc.) beginning in kindergarten and continuing up to the present. She loved drawing and wrote little stories almost daily before entering kindergarten... then it all ground to a halt when she started hearing that she had to hurry up and that she wasn't very good at it. This book gave her back her love of drawing. I have already ordered more by this author and will continue to buy books written by Fiona Watts. They are very good for my little girl's soul.
A pretty, flashy book...BUT ! ! ! .......2006-12-16
I bought this book for a 7-year-old niece who loves to draw. This is a bright, pretty book with a sparkly cover and extremely cute pictures of princesses and ballerinas, BUT I was disappointed in the actual drawing instruction the book offers.
The written instructions are often mediocre ("Draw a circle for a head. Add her face and ears. Then draw the bodice and skirt of her dress. Add little shapes for the toes of her shoes"). The accompanying how-to-draw diagrams are only 2" high by 2-1/2" wide, which is much too small. Like my niece, I think most children will skip over the diagrams and their accompanying text and go immediately to trying to copy or trace the large color pictures instead.
The book also lacks any discussion of drawing basics, such as body proportions, basic shapes used in drawing (circle, triangle, oval, etc.), and sketching lightly first so unwanted lines can be easily erased. These things are assumed rather than discussed or pointed out directly. The book also does not really encourage creativity or originality; the idea here is to copy the pictures shown in the book.
As stated earlier, this is a very cute book, but you might want to be aware of lack of real "how to" information.
Great for Little People Artists.......2006-11-10
We purchased for our daughter's 8th birthday. She loved the previous drawing books we had bought and this brought just as much enjoyment. The directions are easy to follow and produce great results.

Office Doodle Notebook: Sketch, Scribble & Monkey Around Without Getting Caught
ASIN: 1579907679 |
Book Description
The teacher is droning, the students are moaning, and every minute seems like an hour. And next comes the tedium of study hall. Yawn! There's only one thing for a kid to do: grab this entertaining follow-up to last season's Don't-Get-Caught Doodle Notebook, an absolute lifesaver for the child drowning in dullness. On the surface it looks exactly like an ordinary red marble composition book. But inside it's totally subversive, with oodles of doodles to complete, amusing multiple-choice questions to answer, and comic caricatures lampooning the “bored of education” and adults in general. And if the teacher should come around to see? Easy--just turn to the fake class notes in the middle of the book and no one will be the wiser!
