Book Description

Welcome to 44 Scotland Street, home to some of Edinburgh's most colorful characters. There's Pat, a twenty-year-old who has recently moved into a flat with Bruce, an athletic young man with a keen awareness of his own appearance. Their neighbor, Domenica, is an eccentric and insightful widow. In the flat below are Irene and her appealing son Bertie, who is the victim of his mother’s desire for him to learn the saxophone and italian–all at the tender age of five.

Love triangles, a lost painting, intriguing new friends, and an encounter with a famous Scottish crime writer are just a few of the ingredients that add to this delightful and witty portrait of Edinburgh society, which was first published as a serial in The Scotsman newspaper.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Delicious slice of Edinburgh life!.......2007-09-24

This book was written for The Scotsman newspaper in serial form, as many of Charles Dickens's novels were. It's not Dickensian, but Smith's view of the purpose of fiction is certainly compatible with Dickens's - "to remind us of the virtues - of love and forgiveness, for example - and these can be portrayed just as well in an ongoing story of everyday life as they can on a more ambitious and more leisurely canvas." That is not to say that this book is dull or moralizing - far from it! Smith's sly wit enlivens each character and scene and makes me think more of Austen than of Dickens. It is no easy feat to write article-length chapters interesting in themselves, that are connected in theme and tone, with a central plot thread which is tied up satisfactorily in the end (at least for me...some reviewers have disagreed). Smith has done it.

The cast of characters here is presumably the one that we will meet in the next two novels of the series, Espresso Tales and Love Over Scotland. Smith has left loose ends for future exploration. These characters may not equal the popularity of his Botswana folks (Mma Ramotswe of the Ladies Detective Agency) but it's a very close call. It's satisfying to watch Pat (the twenty-year old in search of work and love and social life) grow in realizing and acting on her own very good judgment of people and situations. Pat's older sidekicks, Domenica and Angus, are witty sophisticates with a taste for the down-to-earth - Pat probably won't turn out to be like them, but they are an amusing counterbalance for her innocence and honesty.

Bruce - aaaahhhhh, Bruce! Bruce deserves his own paragraph, as he would certainly tell us. No more about Bruce, you gotta read it. Irene, our other over-the-top manipulator, is equally amazing, in a much more intellectual way. I still can't get over the idea of a Stockhausen ringtone...anyway, that's the snobby nouveau-riche side of Edinburgh for you. And Bertie, Irene's son, is right up there with Pat as the most interesting character. We are going to see much more of Bertie, I hope. Matthew, Pat's "boss" (if it is possible to think of Matthew as a boss), will continue to surprise us.

Edinburgh itself is a character in the book. Some of Scotland's poets and politicians appear in this book (the introduction fills us in on who is real and who is not), and as we get to know them and hear some of their poems (courtesy of Domenica and Angus), we feel that we are beginning to know this place, its past and present. Big Lou, the coffee-shop owner who reads Proust, is fictional, but I bet there is someone close to being Big Lou in Edinburgh somewhere. One day I'm going to meet her!

If you like the Botswana series, give this one a try! I'm betting you will be hooked.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Enjoyable Book.......2007-09-22

I picked this (and the sequel) up on my way back from a business trip in the U.K. I've read all of Mccall Smith's "#1 Lady Detective Agency Books" so I thought I'd give this a go.

The book is excellent and an incredible joy to read. I started and finished the book on the 7 hour flight back, and many times laughed out loud at some of the humor and the fascinating characters.

I'll say this - every book I read by Mccall Smith makes me want to go visit the country in which it's set. This is no different. Edinburgh in Scotland is high on the agenda for the next trip.

If you're traveling overseas, buy this first book for the trip over, then wait to get the sequel for the return flight.

4 out of 5 stars makes you want to visit Scotland.......2007-07-29

Good characters, an alluring setting and a good tale make this series an enjoyable read. You will be eager to read the next one.

5 out of 5 stars hilarious.......2007-05-21

This book is absolutely hilarious. The characters, while apparently quintessentially Scottish, are easily relatable to anyone of any nationality in that you sit there and think, "I know someone exactly like that!" You do not have to be from Edinburgh to find this book laugh-out-loud funny. True, there is not much of a resolution at the end, but this book is one of the few instances where the writing is the point, not the plot (which is enjoyable on its own anyway). I can't wait to read the sequel.

5 out of 5 stars A very enjoyable read.......2007-02-22

I really liked this book. It was a joy to read. The characters are interesting and unpredictable. Also, it's been a while since I've laughed out loud while reading a book, but I did so with this one.

Book Description

Ever since anonymous spray-can art began appearing on city walls in New York and Philadelphia in the late 1960s, graffiti has been a ubiquitous presence in the urban landscape, its artists largely unsung heroes. As hip-hop culture spread from America, graffiti became a worldwide phenomenon, emerging in the 1980s as the symbolic artistic language of young people everywhere and one of the most potent influences on youth-oriented marketing and design. With more than 2,000 illustrations by over 150 artists from all over the world and interviews with many of them, this visually arresting book is the most comprehensive survey of graffiti art ever published.

Today's young graffiti artists incorporate a variety of mediums-including stickers, stencils, oils, acrylics, and oil-based chalk-as well as an ever-expanding range of social commentary. This evolution in style and subject matter has earned graffiti the respect of the art world and guaranteed its long-lasting influence on art, graphic design, and style around the world. Great fun for graffiti and pop-culture buffs, the book is also an essential reference work for anyone involved in the visual arts today. AUTHOR BIO: Nicholas Ganz (also known as Keinom, his pen name) is a graffiti artist who has traveled around the world to gather material for this book. He lives in Essen, Germany. Tristan Manco is a graphic artist and director of Bristol-based Tijuana Design. He is the author of Stencil Graffiti and Street Logos.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference.......2007-08-06

I'm an art teacher, and I have this book in my room for ninth graders to look at during "down" time. It is so popular that I have had to repair it with book-binding tape after only two years. Many of the students just enjoy looking at the variety of impressive artwork, and some of them enjoy copying the styles of letters to create their own names or phrases. There are hundreds and hundreds of photos from around the world, showcasing a wide variety of styles. I find it hard to believe that someone could not be impressed with the artwork contained in this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Gift.......2007-07-14

I bought this book for my sister on her birthday and it's awesome... but some of the art in this book is not as spectacular as I thought it would be. The book is very enjoyable regardless.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Concise, Marvelous Photographs.......2007-06-22

I got just what I wanted from this book; a vivid depiction of some of the best works of graffiti in the entire world. I was certainly not disappointed. The art presented here ranges from simple, stark icons plastered in street signs to massive photorealistic portraits on the sides of enormous buildings, and everything in between.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Pictorial Documentary of Street Art.......2007-06-01

Beautiful, glossy images, with many styles and influences...

4 out of 5 stars ohhh.... but I like those slate grey concrete walls.......2007-04-05

To the previous reviewer:

Quote "It just goes to show how brainwashed everybody is into thinking this act of vandalism is an artform"

Of course you are entitled to your opinion, however the sad thing is that you are actually the one who is brainwashed. I guess it is not your fault that years of conditioning have created a closed mind that is unable to appreciate art in forms other than a nice little square canvas hanging on your living room wall.
Try to remove those blinkers once in a while you may be surprised.

peace

OK, as for the book itself.....
Pros: It covers a good spectrum of street art from many countries and is loaded with thousands of photos, making it a great coffee table book. When you open the book and flick through a few of the glossy pages the quality is obvious you really feel like you got your moneys worth.
Pretty good mix of moonlight pieces and the legal stuff.

Cons: The text is pretty minimal and offers only a brief intro to the artists, but I guess most people will be buying this book for the pictures anyway.
I also thought it could have included some larger format pictures considering the page size, pretty minor complaint tho.

Most people will find it a nice gentle intro in to the world of graf art, others a useful reference.

    Book Description

What if there was a secret ingredient that could make every single one of your martial arts techniques better? Not only faster and more powerful, but more likely to slam home to exactly the right target every time. Maybe there is.

Timing is the art and science of ending a confrontation as quickly and efficiently as possible. In Timing for the Fighting Arts, authors Loren W. Christensen and Wim Demeere team up to teach you exactly how to get every last ounce of speed and power out of your techniques. Already strong and lightning fast? Prepare to get even better.

Whether you want to feel safer on the street or emerge victorious in the ring, this book is packed with inside information essential to defeating your opponent:

    * Why many experts say timing is more important than speed

    * How to put the OODA loop and Hick's law to work for you

    * Why timing is both an offensive and defensive asset

    * Which types of verbal distraction can give you the edge

    * Why controlling your opponent's spine gives you an advantage

    * Which tournament techniques really do work on the street

    * How to set up multiple opponents to create timing opportunities

    * Which tricks law enforcement officers rely on to buy time
    * How you can improve your odds against a gun or knife

    * Why timing is one of the most important things you can add to your training

Every one of these concepts is backed up by drills and practice scenarios so you can go beyond theory and put your knew knowledge to work in the ring or on the street where you need it most. If you're ready to take your skills to the next level, Loren and Wim are ready to show you the way.

3 out of 5 stars Good ideas - not so good techniques.......2007-01-04

Not a bad book. it gave me lots to think about in my training.
the concepts contained in the book are excellent - some of the techniques they talk about and demonstrate (in pictures) seem a bit old school. without testing them and practicing them it is all just theory anyway.
    got to practice this stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Turn the autopilot off.......2006-05-01

Yes.. that's basically the main message of this book. Don't fight blindly.

The last chapter is loaded with series of drills that can sharpen your timing and fighting "instinc", while the earlier chapters are full with wonderful information to give you complete understanding of what fighting is all about, and why timing is important.

    Just a word caution,
I often get lost reading those earlier chapters. The authors were very generous in providing us with details and examples that sometime we forget the main theme of the chapter we are reading (also because those details are written in very engaging and absorbing tone).

    Wonderful book.
I am glad that I bought it...

5 out of 5 stars A guide for intermediate to advanced martial artists.......2006-01-13

Timing in the Fighting Arts is a guide for intermediate to advanced martial artists, from boxing professionals to ordinary men and women honing their skills for self-defense. Written by two expert martial artists, both with extensive experience in police work, Timing in the Fighting Arts covers everything from Hick's Law (that reaction time increases the more choices one has - therefore it's faster and more effective to have one simple defense than a dozen complex ones) to improving one's posture to approaching a potentially dangerous person and timing a grab, to "need-to-know" information - and debunked myths - about translating sport fighting to a street situation. A wealth of recommended drills and exercises for physical self-improvement round out this valuable supplementary self-defense resource.

Face it, there are only so many hammers you can fit in a toolbox: they're all useless if the nail pounds you before you can pound it. Plenty of books tell you "what" and "how", this book tells you "WHEN" and if you don't have the opportunity it shows you how to make it happen NOW.

You will learn to create and exploit windows of opportunity in the real world and on the mat. It's not some woo-woo discussion of "timing" over too many cold ones. Techniques and examples are drawn from the experience of the authors BOTH outside and inside the dojo. They have found these to work for them, and you can make them work for you.

Christensen's extensive background as a cop and Demeere's background as both a bouncer (doorman) and ring competitor fit together to present a bigger picture than you might be getting from your dojo alone.

Both authors are long time students and instructors of the martial arts. If you are a dojo enthusiast who is looking for a bigger picture than the one you are getting in school, or looking for an introduction to pragmatic or "reality based self-defense", but find yourself put off by the frequent disrespect for the martial arts, then this book is a good choice for you. It covers similar ground to other books, but the authors do it without feeling the need to tell you that all your training is useless. In fact, they build on your training to help you get more out of it, and it's all done with timing in mind.

You also get pointers to further reading on topics that are covered only in brief and many cool new drills. I like the "statue" one especially, maybe you will too.

Although the back cover states "Easy-to-play arrangements for piano, guitar and voice" this is not at all a beginners book.
Some songs are pretty easy, but overall the level is moderate to pretty advanced. There is quite a variety of "genre" as well I think. Some nice mellow almost ballad like songs, some bluesy tunes, some jazz, a little rock.
I will scan the back cover of the book and upload the image ( if I can ) so everyone can see what songs are included.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Reliable Book.......2007-08-08

This book is a true gem.
Set aside the absolutely helpful thoughts on generating ideas, structure, and the nexus of reporting and writing (all of which are invaluable).
The idea that there is a triad of elements upon which all good feature stories are based is an extraordinarily useful one.
Base a story on action, quotation and narration (i.e. the basic information necessary to the story) and go from one element to the next and so on, building the story block by block, says the author.
This concept alone is the best working guide for a writer on a nuts and bolts level, bar none.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for journalists.......2007-05-06

This book shows the nuts and bolts about good journalism: writing and interviewing techniques, how to get good story ideas, etc. It has a great deal of examples too. Every journalist should read it at least once. The best thing would be to revisit it every two or three years.

5 out of 5 stars ...Horsemen Pass By..........2006-10-01

Cast a cold eye on life on death; horsemen pass by. That's an epitaph. Was it Yeats, or just one he suggested in a poem? How does it apply to Blundell's book? Just this: Here is the one and only worthwhile book ever written for writers. I know, because I that's how I earn my living. Blundell is the best bar none. Throw all the others out. Unless, of course you're another wound-licker who thinks he wants to "learn" to write, in which case, horsemen pass by, and bring on the clowns!

5 out of 5 stars Unique, Refreshing approach!.......2004-06-27

There is a voice in this book, and you can just HEAR this guy as he admonishes writers and drills into their heads the step-by step guide to reporting and writing. The tone is firm with a direct approach to feature writing as the author is adamant that, "reporting and writing can NOT be divorced."

I like the sharp conversational tone; it's like sitting in the classroom. He is very clever with the similes and metaphors to clearly drive his point.

Although this book has made the rounds for years, Blundell offers refreshing ideas and unique insight to writing. He speaks of experience as a Wall Street Journal writer. This is HIS voice, and not a slew of other professional writers churning out a how to book.

I like a quote of his when he tells us that the READER requires specific information and our first priority is to meet that requirement and also that the reader has a deeper and more universal need that has to be met or, he flees. The author said, "nothing is easier than to stop reading."

You won't find the usual writing book addressing topics like these. A sample chapter is Raw Materials - generating ideas; Extrapolation (beyond the event lies a broader, more significant story); Synthesis (assembling promising story ideas from what looks like a junkpile of spare parts); Localization (thinking big); Projection (declining to follow the media sheep to a pasture already overgrazed) and Viewpoint Switching (thinking of a story as a piece of terrain with varying topography).

Also topics titled Shaping Ideas; Story Dimensions, Planning and Execution, Organization, and you get great insight into Handling Key Story Elements that delves into the dreaded leads and endings.

What is interesting in a unique approach to his section titled Wordcraft. He assumes that you the reader already know grammar, syntax and usage. So his goal is to show us how to achieve certain effects at certain places in the story.

You will read some full texts on sample stories that are sprinkled throughout the chapters. Blundell also provides reading material for the writer. He says, "whole forests have died to fill the marketplace with other writing books." One suggestion is Zissner's "On Writing Well."

This is a unique writing book and is meant to read completely. ....MzRizz

5 out of 5 stars Writing as critical thinking.......2002-02-17

One of the biggest mistakes young reporters make is viewing reporting and writing as separate exercises, one following the other. Bill Blundell rightly sees them as one process. Good reporting begets good writing. It begins with critical thinking about your subject, which if done properly brings strong focus and organization to your story. In 20 years as a newspaper reporter and editor I've not run across a more practical, common sense approach to writing than that offered by the Art & Craft of Feature Writing.

From the author of the enormously successful Graffiti World comes this spectacular follow-up, celebrating the contributions of women to contemporary graffiti and street art.

Female writers have always been in the vanguard of the graffiti movement, though often shunted to the sidelines by their male counterparts. This exhaustive volume places them front and center, featuring 1,000 full-color illustrations from some of the world's most prominent artists, including Brazil's Nina, Japan's Sasu, Mexico's Peste, and the Americans Lady Pink, Swoon, and Miss 17. Two eight-page fold-out collages, a fold-out poster jacket, and an authoritative text round out the impressive package. The first and only comprehensive survey of its kind, this book is sure to attract and expand upon the wide and enthusiastic readership that made Graffiti World such a runaway success.

5 out of 5 stars Graff at its Best.......2007-07-17

Graffiti Women is a great book for either the collector, or the first time buyer of street art, also this edition comes with a dust jacket that is also a fold-out poster of art within the book!
Never before has there been a better compiled book on Women artists from right around the world, also includes background and history of Artists.

This book is a awsome graffit book, with writers from around the world loaded w/ there best pics and a lil doc. on them below ,i really dig it it's FRESH! I also own the other book ''graffiti from 5 connitients'' and i would have too say this book is better but they both make a good collection i would deffinetly recomend this too real graff writers that are looking for something that they can hold on too and enjoy for a long time.

4 out of 5 stars A good variety of talented women.......2007-03-21

A really good selection of women involved in the graffiti scene, that documents a portion of each of their work well.
Altho their are a few obvious female writers that are missing from this book, like Misery, Diva or Barbara and Eva 62, the book generally covers a good selection of writers and has some awesome coverage of some of their work!
    An awesome book highly recommended!

    Book Description

This edition retains the basic approach and style that has appealed to readers for over fifty years. The first half focuses on fundamental physical and analytical principles. The second half covers applications of those principles to flow in pipes and open channels, lift and drag, fluid machinery, and compressible flow. The final chapter is an introduction to an array of fluid measurements and the instruments for making them.

3 out of 5 stars Probably not the best for an Elementary Fluids course.......2003-05-24

The title of this book is misleading--there is nothing elementary in this book. Flipping through this book one will probably become intimidated by sheer volume of "difficult math". This book might be of great help in a graduate level Fluid Mechanics course, but the definitions, derivations, and concepts in general are too difficult for an undergraduate. If you have a good instructor, he or she will probably be able to simplify things for you, otherwise the book will teach you nothing. Many of the problems/examples, however, seem to be simple enough and can be solved using simple equations, so one wonders why the text goes in to so much detail using esoteric mathematics. If you are an undergraduate, and your instructor makes you buy this book, be sure to get some sort of supplementary outline book, or else you will probably be lost.

    4 out of 5 stars generally good.......2000-04-05

this is a generally good book. of course, but as textbooks go, this is worth it. the material is as clear as can be, so that makes it a little easier to deal with an otherwise tough subject.

    Book Description

Ask any designer, fashion editor, or art director where the hottest trends are coming from, and they'll tell you it's from the streets of certain cities. And if you ask them what magazine gives the best, most authoritative coverage of these outsider fashion incubators, chances are they'll say Nylon. Nylon here combines its street cred and international expertise (the magazine is read in major cities around the world, and has recently launched both Japanese and Australian editions) to reveal the iconic looks in the seven most fashion-forward cities today: London, Paris, Berlin, Tokyo, Melbourne, Copenhagen and New York. Led by acclaimed editor in chief Marvin Scott Jarrett, Nylon's editors, writers, and photographers cover these cities' trends with the same signature flair, enthusiasm, and eye for the cutting edge that has catapulted the magazine to the top of its demographic. Each chapter opens with an introduction describing the city's particular history, traits, and culture, followed by full-page pictures of each city's stylish residents, showing their creativity in full detail, from Tokyo's famous Goth Lolitas to Copenhagen's casual chic and everything in between. Quotes from each subject tell about who influences their personal style, what they love about their city, and their favorite local stores. Edgy, colorful, and fascinating to look at, Street is a chronicle of diverse urban style that you won't be able to put down.

An awesome book to look at and look at over and over.

4 out of 5 stars I would like to see fashion covered more like this...........2007-04-12

These were attractive people on the street, not professional models (except one but it was just happenstance!) and the clothes they chose to wear that day. I like street fashion more than runway fashion. My only negative thought was that, while stylish, the outfits were very middle of the road. There were very few examples of anything remotely extreme like in Fruits. I would like to see more outrageous fashion, people whith character who are interesting regardless of age or size. I did really like this book and I see something new everytime I look through it.

    5 out of 5 stars Worth Buying.......2007-01-01

I really liked this book. It reminded me of Fruits, but I liked this slightly more because it focused on different countries rather than just one country like Fruits did. Some people didn't really have intresting style, but not everyone does, and that also made me like it. The style wasn't to an extreme; there were cute, but simple outfits, too. I highly recommend this to any fashion lover.

    3 out of 5 stars eh.......2006-10-15

the format is the almost the exact same as Fruits, but the fashion is less interesting. a lot of the outfits are somewhat boring and some of the photography is out of focus. some of the pictures are really good, though.
