Informative for all levels of Vintage Buyers & Enjoyable.......2006-02-06
Virtual Vintage covers the world of online vintage fashion. If you are new to buying and selling vintage fashion online, its a great place to start. If you are not new, it still had plenty of tips that I didn't think about before.
The book is much more than online vintage fashions. It also goes into detail about what to look for from different designers, periods, etc. It has chapters on how to repair and care for your vintage fashions. The back of the book includes a directory (with summary) of online retailers to check out.
I found this book easy and enjoyable to read cover to cover rather than just as a reference. The authors write in an informative yet enertaining way.
The only negative thing I would have to say is; when will there be an updated version??? Some of the online sites and eBay information is dated, as is to be expected in a virtual world.
The Best of ANY Book of Its Kind!!.......2002-11-29
A WONDERFULLY fun book -- to read, to refer to, to give as a gift to alll your girlfriends! Endless information, up-to-date resources, very knowledgeable and savvy and the only book you need about vintage on the net. I hope it gets a new edition every other year or -- knowing the net -- EVERY year; I'll keep every edition, because none will ever be obsolete. These authors know their audience, know their subject, know their territory. A book you'll read again and again and never, ever, finish. :->
One of the best of its kind.......2002-11-28
Virtual Vintage stands out from most other books on the vintage-resale-thrifting topic -- even though it is geared to the online market. First, the writing is both excellent and entertaining; I found the book hard to put down.
Additionally, the authors also offer some good tips -- laced throughout the text -- on HOW TO WEAR some of this old stuff. As much as I love vintage fashion, and have collected it for several years, I am often at a loss as to how to WEAR some of the pieces, or how to incorporate my vintage "finds" into my real-life wardrobe. So far, few books actually address this issue, and tend to focus instead on buying, selling or simply "collecting" vintage fashion.
This book is thorough and carefully put together -- like a great outfit. I hope the authors write more on this topic, and maybe put together a how-to guide to vintage fashion.
Kudos!
The Best On-Line Fashion Guide.......2002-10-02
Usually I don't "read" antique guide books, but a couple of pages into this one and I was hooked. In Virtual Vintage you'll find common sense tips on buying and selling vintage on-line, the A to Z of navigating eBay (I learned several new tricks) and lots of design and fashion tips. The book presents useful info including international size conversion charts, how to remove stains from clothing and must-see Hollywood films for clothes lovers. It was so well done I wanted to learn more about Virtual Vintage's two women authors and how they came to write this surprisingly literary guide book.
Virtual Vintage has a section that rates many of the dot com vintage sites for content, ease of use and return policies. Virtual Vintage is considerably more user friendly than most other antique/collectible guide books that I've seen... I am also fond of the book because it gave my vintage site a great review! I will certainly recommend this book to my web customers.

Book Description
The Algorithmic Beauty of Plants explores mathematical models of developmental processes and structures of plants, and illustrates them using state-of-the-art computer-generated images. Plant models which grow, interact with the environment, produce flowers and fruits, and finally die, have an immense intuitive appeal of "bringing life into a computer." In front of a graphics monitor it is easy to forget the underlying mathematical formulae and simply look at plants growing, self-replicating, responding to external factors, even mutating. Without compromising the mathematical rigor of presentation the authors have tried to preserve this "touch of magic" accompanying in their research. The following areas receive particular attention: methods for the modeling and rendering of plants which are suitable for realistic image synthesis; the scientific potential of computer graphics in the visualization of biological structures and processes; the relationship between control mechanisms employed by li- ing plants and the resulting complex developmental sequences and structures; and the relationship between developmental processes, self-similarity and fractals. The formalism of L-systems are adopted as the primary mathematical vehicle used to express developmental processes. The notion of L-systems was conceived in 1968 by Aristid Lindenmayer as a formal model of plant development. Its exceptional elegance was promptly recognized by mathematicians, who soon developed a comprehensive theory of L-systems. However, only recently has computer graphics revealed the full potential of L-systems applied to plant modeling. Although the focus is on the original results of joint research led by the authors, a survey of alternative methods for plant modeling is also included.

All the detail you need to produce your own graphical plants.......2007-03-19
The beauty of plants has attracted the interest of mathematicians for centuries. Plants have many conspicuous geometric features such as symmetry in their leaves, rotational symmetry in their flowers, and then there are the interesting helical arrangements of pine cone scales. This book examines two factors that organize plant structures and therefore contribute to their beauty. The first is the simple elegance of the rules which describe plant development in relation to time. The second is self-similarity as characterized by Mandelbrot.
This book applies the basic idea inherent in recursive graphics programming to modeling natural organic phenomena to the greatest degree of accuracy possible. This book uses L-systems, which is a method of specifying rules that enables very complex ideas to be expressed in a very exact way. The book contains no information on specific programming language implementation. However, the L-system specification is given in enough detail that an implementation of a basic L-system compiler should be attainable by most programmers with a talent for efficient algorithms implementation and sufficient motivation. All of the graphics are done using either two or three dimensional turtle commands, which are also easily adapted to fit into whatever compiler you choose. Efficient display routines will require some work, and as most of the algorithms described produce very large amounts of data, speed is very important for all shapes apart from the most basic structures.
The results of using an L-system is quite impressive. The book contains many photographs of computer generated trees using L-systems that are almost identical to their natural counterparts. The book is very well written, with lots of examples and many illustrations. It starts off as quite easy reading, but by the time it reaches sections on the simulation of internal balancing of cellular structures, the math gets very complex. Although you need an interest in artificial life, graphics, and fractals to find this book interesting or even just comprehensible, you probably also need some skill in the analysis and design of algorithms to make any of the ideas contained in the book a reality. The table of contents is:
1. Graphical Modeling Using L-systems 1
2. Modeling of Trees 51
3. Developmental models of Herbaceous Plants 63
4. Phyllotaxis 99
5. Models of Plant Organs 119
6. Animation of Plant Development 133
7. Modeling of Cellular Layers 145
8. Fractal Properties of Plants 175
A. Software Environment for Plant Modeling 193
B. About the Figures 201
C. Turtle Interpretation of Figures 211
Excellent and beautiful book........2000-04-21
The color plates are quite extraordinary. Knowledge of math helps, but the book pretty much starts at Ground Zero. It is quite useable for those wishing to implement the plant modeling systems described (which is why I purchased it).
Book Description
Nowadays, not only has much Hollywood animation and game design become informed by the Japanese manga aesthetic, but these works are increasingly done by computer applications.Indeed, Photoshop and other 3D software have become detailed and versatile enough to be an ideal tool to successfully render the nuances of the human figure and face. How To Create Virtual Beauties is a must-have volume for those working in such fields, a comprehensive guide to rendering beautiful characters through computer technology that allows not only for exquisite rendering of complex forms, but also allows for saving, editing, re-editing, animation and manipulation of the created artworks.

Remarkably simple.......2005-09-27
I'm a student of fine arts with an interest in digital imaging and decided to buy this book. After using it in just the first week I had learned techniques save 4+ hours on shading problems, texturing cloth (in 2d), when to properly use anti-alias and not, as well as more than 10+ techniqes.
The 3D is really easy, rather time consuming, but worth it in the end. It uses examples from Lightwave, but can easily be converted over 3Ds Max or Maya. It was a rather quick read and I wish they would have had more artists than the 3. The slight complaint I have about the book is it has some parts aimed at fan boys. I'd rather have information on how to recreate images than some eye candy

A must for teens!.......2003-04-20
Virtual You! will take teen girls on a journey that will change them from the inside out. Within the pages is an inner "makeover" that will have outward results. Girls are encouraged to step out and trust God with every area of their lives. This fun, interactive book dicusses love, purity, relationships, personal make-up - everything girls need to grow into Godly women. Jimmie Davis' friendly and conversational tone gives girls the feel of receiving guidance from a long-time, trusted friend. The contemporary format and language makes it especially appealing to teens. This book is a must for teenage girls and would be a great small group study.
Great Resource for Teaching Teen Girls.......2002-10-10
As a teacher and leader of teen girls, I'm excited to see an interactive study like Jimmie Davis'Virtual You! Often it is difficult to find a book that challenges teen girls to think on a deeper level without being so tedious that they lose interest. Virtual You! provides a great balance. The computer theme used in the book is perfect for today's youth, who spend untold hours online. This book does a wonderful job of encouraging girls to think beyond the immediate regarding matters of dating, sex, and marriage, among other things. Virtual You! is a great choice for a small group study for girls.

Gelernter's lyrical rant on the critical role of beauty and aesthetics in computer technology comes just in time. Computer engineers and designers, who create software that is bloated with seldom-used features and that intrusively draws our attention to it rather than the task at hand, could greatly benefit from the pursuit of what Gelernter calls "deep beauty," the marriage of power and simplicity.
Gelernter suggests that the dichotomy between art/beauty and science/technology has led to inadequate academic training of computer-science students. He points out that the greatest minds in science and industry have always pursued beauty. "Machine beauty is the driving force behind technology and science," he says, and yet "beauty bothers us." Somehow it's perceived to be softer and less rigorous to train computer scientists in art, music, architecture, and design. However, Gelernter sees these disciplines as closely aligned with the mathematics and science that are the foundation of technology. Because of this lack of aesthetic education, much user interface has been poorly designed.
Gelernter's persuasive arguments are far-reaching as he casts a shrewd eye on everything from postmodernism to architecture to the nature of beauty itself. This short, often witty book is written by someone who has paid a price for his opinion--Gelernter was a target of the Unabomber and was critically injured in a mail-bomb attack in 1993.
Customer Reviews:
Beauty is truth- so far as I can understand it .......2007-05-08
This book finds Beauty in a place where it is not ordinarily thought of as being- in the design of machines. It attempts to show how beauty 'drives the computer revolution' "how lust for beauty and elegance underpinned the most important discoveries in computational history and continues to push research onward today." As Gelertner defines it beauty comes of the combination of 'simplicity and power'. And the experience of it can be found even if one is not an engineer . He gives examples like hitting 'with one graceful hammer stroke ' a nail into a board, or making a beautiful catch in baseball, with ease and grace. He says that in such beautiful actions there is no 'superflous motion'. He gives examples from a wide variety of fields to illustrate this principle. "Vigorous writing is concise" he says quoting William Strunk".
If I understand him 'beauty' is a kind of rightness in the way a thing is done or designed .
This seems to me an interesting definition though of course far from an all- encompassing one of 'beauty'.
However when Gelertner began actually comparing computer programs and designs, Apple vs. Microsoft for instance. I did not really get what was going on. I did not have the knowledge and experience to really understand or evaluate this.
Marriage of simplicity and power.......2007-03-10
As David Gelertner points out, most of us implicitly hold that scientists and artists are radically different by craft and by the very nature of their work. In fact, the scientific and artistic personalities seem to overlap more than they differ. Beauty and simplicity are the ultimate defense against complexity, and all the greatest discoveries are usually both simple and powerful - they are beautiful. Whether it is software, or product design, or even theoretical physics, best solutions have an aura of elegance and beauty that is often overlooked by our schools and colleges; as David Gelernter points out, our sole focus on analytical reasoning is leading us down the wrong path, and we need to address this issue on an emergency basis.
Wonderful reading.......2004-06-05
I am reading Gelernter in backwards order, also recommend Muse in the Machine
The Mirror Worlds Companion.......2002-03-14
What is beauty? Gelernter, in a work that is more an
essay than full-blown book, does a wonderful job of
drawing the reader into exploring that question. He
asks, "...could a mathematical proof, scientific theory,
or piece of software be 'beautiful' in the real, literal
way that a painting or symphony or rose can be beautiful?"
The answer, according to Gelernter, is a resounding "Yes".
Machine beauty, a simple elegance that resonates in its
observer, is the subject of the work. But, how might one
sense this? Gelernter offers this: "You might experience
something resembling machine beauty, even if you are no
scientist or engineer, when you drive a nail into a
board with one clean, graceful hammer stroke." Precisely!
"Deep beauty, 'resonant beauty' in which many types of
loveliness reinforce one another, is a principal topic
of this book" according to the author. He then explores
the following two claims: (1) "...machine beauty is
the driving force behind technology and science", and
(2) "... machine beauty bothers us. We act as a society
as if our goal were not to nurture or celebrate it but
to stamp it out."
Gelernter, a computer scientist and sometimes artist,
applies his many observations to the sad state of today's
computer software. "The hell with mathematics; let's
teach of our programmers about beauty" he exclaims!
There are long running comparisons between the WinTel
PC and Apple Macintosh in the work. It isn't a "sales
pitch" for one or the other; just a set of observations
on how the emphasis (or deemphasis) of beauty and
elegance drove both efforts.
The work is easy to read yet fully researched. A "Notes"
section appears at the end of the 144 pages of prose to
provide all of the references to the other works Gelernter
drew upon. I thought the effort made to keep the meat of
the book uncluttered was well worthwhile.
This book is an excellent companion to Gelernter other
work "Mirror Worlds". Read Mirror Worlds first and then
eat this for dessert--you won't be disappointed.
The machine may be beautiful, but . . ........2002-03-12
The author seems to have started out with a premise I have held to since I read "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" when I was in college. My first computer teacher, Ted Nelson, turned me on to the intrinsic beauty in things computerish with his enormously quirky "Computer Revolution/Dream Machines". My wife is a designer and I am in computers. We have had many long conversations about the false division drawn between art and science. So I thought I might have found a new soulmate when I picked up this little (176 pages) book. Too bad it wasn't so. Oh, Gelernter seems to be going the same way initially, even if I found the prose, and especially the examples, a little rough. But he just couldn't hold me. I found him spending too much time defending from his soapbox rather than illuminating. He seemed to be trying to write the textbook for a college course he wants to teach instead of reaching out to the reader. I don't think I could wholeheartedly recommend this book to my personal friends, so I can't recommend it to you either. Maybe next time.

Virtual Beauties 2020: The Ultimate 3d Graphic Collection.......2005-09-12
Unimpressive. They just aren't beautiful, nor realistic. Sure the cover girl is gorgeous but that's it. If this is what passes for beauty in Japan... well I can find many many more beautiful and near photo realistic 3D graphic program generated beauties all over the internet. 2 stars for the cover girl. 1 star for the rest. Rip off.
Nice Quality Digital Pinup Girls.......2004-03-02
This is a great galley of Japan's most talented CG artists. The book is filed w/ high quality glossy photos of the cutest CG girls ever created. Each artist has a one-page bio with their thought, history and contact information. There are also short sections with pointers on how to model and texture.
The only thing keeping this from 5 stars is the fact that the instruction should be more in depth. If you are looking for a how-to book, go for Femme Digitale or some of the program specific books. Otherwise, a great photo collection.

WHAT IS SEXY IN CYBER-SPACE? DIGITAL BEAUTIES PRESENTS A VIRTUAL HAREM TO CHOOSE FROM
The first book in TASCHEN's new series on digital culture focuses on the beauty of cutting-edge computer-generated females. Not a technical "how-to," DIGITAL BEAUTIES celebrates the artistic achievements of today's hottest character designers, without using distracting technical jargon.
Here you'll discover an international digital beauty pageant of sexy CGI women in a full range of techniques: Lara Croft-style action adventurers, surreal fantasy Amazons, biker-chicks as gleaming and tough as the hogs they're draped over, wide-eyed rock-and-roll pixies, and more.
Even on the printed page, the three-dimensionality of some of these images is so lifelike it's hard to believe they're 100% computer generated.
Featured in DIGITAL BEAUTIES is the work of over one hundred artists, with biographical and contact information, and most importantly, multiple examples of their astonishing work. Four to six pages are provided for each, and the result is a mouthwatering guide to the ideal woman from cyberspace.
Customer Reviews:
Simply Awful.......2007-07-21
The thing that occurred to me while perusing the digital beauties in this book was that 90% of the "artists" paid to be included. With the exception of 3 or 4 of them, they don't even measure up to talented amateurs. There is one guy that is embarassingly bad. I won't mention names.
If you want the cream of this crop, screen capture the book cover and let the rest go. Don't waste your money... I'm sorry I had to give it a star at all.
Picture Book.......2005-05-12
A book of digitaly created female pictures and the artists who created them.
Some brilliant work, but mostly disappointing.......2002-10-04
I purchased the book hoping to use it as a reference for my freelance pursuits in 3D human modeling and texturing. Some of the artwork offers stunningly realistic renders, and others close-up insights on modeling techniques. Examples are those by Robichaud, Dean, Koch, Stahlberg, and several Japanese artists.
However, I was disappointed to find that most works were created by the consumer-level Poser software, for which pre-made 3D models are readily available and simply need to be "posed"; there is no original creation of 3D models on the artist's part. Moreover, the Poser works in Digital Beauties rudely show the mediocre rendering capabilities of the software - the models are often defined by jagged edges. In short, the best works in the book are those with original modeling and attention to detail, not those primarily intended provide erotic gratification for the viewer.
The book itself was well-conceived and attractively designed. It could be condensed and even more appealing by excluding the less-than-professional artwork.
Pictorial collection of the most beautiful female 3d models........2002-02-04
Top artists of the globe bring you the best in 3d female character creation. A must-have!
Digital Beauties.......2002-01-30
If you are interested in the cutting edge of computer graphics this book is for you. It is full of images created using computer graphic programs. There are so many wonderful images to look at and study for the technique...a wonderful collection of digital art from around the world....
Book Description
For centuries scientists have tried to understand the growth and development of multicellular organisms. More recently, with the help of mathematical models and computerized simulations, they have discovered algorithmic patterns and models that seem to describe the dynamic processes in which organisms grow, reproduce, and respond to external factors. In this fascinating and beautifully illustrated book, Hans Meinhardt explains and illustrates these structural growth patterns in the case of sea shells. The book delightfully conveys the intuitive appeal and the "touch of magic" in this research. A diskette packaged with the book contains a program that allows the reader to run the simulations on a PC. New patterns can be generated interactively to provide an insight into the process of biological pattern formation.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent reading.......2006-01-05
I've been collecting shells for many years but i never thought of the complexity and perfection of their patterns! This book describes in a simple way the mechanisms that produce the surface decorations of shells. It takes reader in a fascinating trip in a world of algorithmic shapes and colors!
Sea Shell Math.......2002-06-03
This book describes, using a computer, The geometry involved in the building of seashells and in particular the surface features. It shows the how and why of surface decorations found on several species of Mollusks. This is probably the only book to treat this subject and do so extensively expertly and comprahensively.
very thought provoking and visually stimulating.......2000-07-26
I came across this book at the Rhode Island School of Design library. As an artist I found it surprising that what I had considered to be just a beautiful pattern was actually an imprint of the pressure and movement of the waves upon the seashell. This insight was very thought provoking for me. Perhaps to biologists this is a normal and natural thing - but for an artist this kind of scientific approach with beautifully illustrated pages is a deeply moving experience. This book will definitely make you think twice about the objects that you take for granted - whether it's visually or scientifically. I strongly recommend this book for those who like intellectual challenges and who like to look at the world with fresh new eyes.
