    Book Description

Fine art quality, black-and-white prints are within every photographer's reach with the techniques illustrated in this digital image editing guide. Taking advantage of the control and reproducibility that the digital darkroom offers, this handbook teaches photographers how to fine-tune images with contrast and exposure levels, crop and rotate images for dynamic results, and remove flaws such as dust and scratches long after the photograph has been taken. Instruction on techniques that simulate traditional hand coloring and tinting and add special effects such as frames, infrared, and lighting and lens effects helps photographers realize their artistic vision. Screen shots and images guide readers through the presented techniques, allowing photographers to gauge their own results and anticipate the effects of the outlined corrections and enhancements on their own images. A gallery of the author's work provides inspiration for simulating—and improving upon—the chemical-based darkroom experience.

3 out of 5 stars Not for my top shelf.......2007-02-10

There is no doubt that the author, Maurice Hamilton, made a great effort to produce a technical book about the finer points of using Photoshop to produce black and white images. It is technical and 'dry', and a hard slog. He explains (at length) some of the detailed procedures, tips and methodology which go to making fine prints. But, the book made me think of some of the Hollywood epics where the idea is grand but the director and the editor let the cast down. I don't care for the high price-low quality production of the book, either. Not that worthy and informational books must be slick and glossy; but for me they must be attractive and 'feel' good. I will keep this book in my reference library, but I do not count it in my '20 best photography books' list!

5 out of 5 stars Preserving the art of monochrome.......2006-08-14

Film photographers have long savored black-and-white photography for its stark alternative to realism, and the stripped down, minimalistic approach to creating an image. Digital photography threatened to push black-and-white photography to extinction, but, thankfully, artists like Hamilton have preserved the spirit of the medium and extended it through the use of Adobe's flagship image editor.

The author shows you the proper way to create monochrome images while preserving -- or enhancing tonality. He explains that a good black-and-white image isn't simply a color image that's been desaturated. I also liked the exploration into reproducing traditional darkroom techniques in Photoshop. This is a must-have book for any serious black-and-white worker.

5 out of 5 stars my photographs have improved with the help of this book.......2006-05-20

I consider this book to be in a class with the best books written on photography.
I especially appreciate the Ansel Adams quote and the way that Maurice Hamilton lets his own gallery speak for itself. The emphasis is not on showing off his own work but rather, on helping the reader advance their own art. My work has improved significantly since my first reading and I will read sections over several times.

Bravo Maurice and thank you, Linnea Nereim

5 out of 5 stars Nice Fine Art Book.......2006-04-22

This is a very nice fine art photography book dealing with black and white. The author is obviously very well versed in Adobe Photoshop and his expertise is evident through his writing. The inforamtion is well presented and clearly stated. The images are well done and have a broad appeal to both a professional and amateur.

    Well worth the money

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2006-03-22

Intrigued by the glowing review of this book by Garth Leach at The Daily Shooter.com, I acquired a copy and experimented with several of the black and white conversion techniques described.

Like Garth, I found this book guided me toward the creation of outstanding black and white images. This book seems geared toward the intermediate Photoshop user but should also be helpful to novice users.

5 out of 5 stars As Serious As They Are Hilarious.......2006-11-22

Being a political cartoonist must be nice. Like comedians, they can basically ridicule people with impunity while the subjects of their mockeries, if they complain, look like they have no sense of humor. What a deal. In this, the third collection of Cox and Forkum's works, the artists are at the top of their game. The drawings themselves are extremely good and very powerful while the commentary is cutting and direct. Of course, a good political cartoon is something more than just a good drawing about a relevant subject. It distills not only a large topic, but often an entire aspect of a cultural zeitgeist, into one picture that says it all. Using that standard, there are many, many good cartoons in this book.

Although the cartoons are fresh as of this writing, spanning from November 2004 to October 2006, one is struck by how often, even with only a bit of time in retrospect, they got it right. To take a couple of my favorite examples, John Bolton portrayed as a bull tapping on the window of the United Nations china shop absolutely hit it on the head as to how Bolton has actually acted as U.S Ambassador there - and let us all be very thankful for it! Continuing with the same theme, portraying Bolton as Darth Vader scaring the wits out of a couple of fleeing donkeys (Democrats) perfectly captures the Left's feelings of intimidation regarding the man and the ideas he represents, as is currently being demonstrated by Democrats in their attempt to prevent Bolton from returning to the U.N. despite having done an excellent job there.

As Cox and Forkum acknowledge, the big events between their last book and this one that makes political cartooning all the more relevant were the worldwide protests over drawings of Mohammed. Maybe political cartoonists do not have the cushiest job after all. Cox and Forkum devote an entire section to the controversy and appropriately recognize it for what it is - not simply a disagreement, even a nasty one, about a few cartoons; but rather an attempt by Islamists to impose their views on everyone contrary to the standards of the Western Enlightenment.

The section on the Mohammed cartoon controversy is just one of the special sections of the book. Equally interesting was the section on the Iranian cartoon contest regarding the Holocaust. Cox and Forkum entered a drawing with a hidden message in an attempt to jab at and make a significant point about Iranian President Ahmadinejad. Too bad they lost but it was a nice try.

Despite the seriousness of the messages, BLACK & WHITE WORLD III is laugh out loud funny time and time again. Often the best way to illuminate a grim situation is to ridicule it and few can beat Cox and Forkum at that. A great job.

5 out of 5 stars These guys are great.......2006-11-21

Their work should be syndicated all over the country. They provide sharp, biting commentary that cuts through the BS the media tries to force on us. They also happen to be very good artists.

5 out of 5 stars A Black and White World View.......2005-12-21

Batman: Black and White vol. 2 is a work of passion and dedication to a character by the artists and authors represented in the book, and their love and fire for Batman shows in every detail. Originally printed as back up stories in Gotham Knights #1-16, these stories which are between 6-8 pages are entirely in black, white, and gray. They encompass a vast variety of the aspects of the Batman, and decades. Almost every classic Batman villain makes an appearance at some point in the graphic, and there is a story to suit almost any taste, from grim and gritty to bright and cheerful.

This is the perfect gift for anyone into Batman in any way, and the perfect thing to buy yourself if you've ever liked Batman in the least. You'll be bowled over by the brilliance of this book.

    Highest recommendations to everyone!

5 out of 5 stars The best batmen ever!.......2005-10-08

I was distressed to seee the reviews pegging it half a star short of a must-own status. Here's my contribution to send this marvellous effort to its rightly earned position.
Might as well add that i do not agree with anyone who says that the eight page space provided to the individual writer artist teams was insufficient .No amount of space wil ever be sufficient for an artist/writer to showcase his talent in its entirety. That is why we have to see them work their magic and reveal themselves in their best form under the constraints provided. An eight page oppurtunity to do what the individual artist always wanted to do with this iconic character, paint him in the very colors he felt suited the caped-crusader best. The keen detective, the confused avenger, the derilious idealist...Black White and Grey of it all.Though i agree some of the stories are mediocre in script ,but there are enough gems to outglitter everything else that isnt ten by ten.Take my word for it.

3 out of 5 stars A piece of Batman History........2005-10-05

In my Astro City: Local Heroes review, I may have been a little harsh on what is, overall, a great series (even if I stand by my review of that particular trade), saying that Astro City shows the limits of the viginette format, and Batman Black and White proves true, except with Black and White, writers get about eight pages. It's just hard to make a great graphic novel with the short story format like Batman Black and White.

This book is a series of unrelated black and white stories featuring various artists and writers. I think the idea is very good, and it is a great way to peep other talent. Katsuhiro Otomo wrote a great, if forced, Batman story, and so did Matt Wagner, of course, Paul Dini's Two-Face story is the best of book, many other stories are really interesting and may be read again (depending on your tastes, most of the stories are noir, some are humorous, like Gaiman's excellent Black and White World, and some are dark, like Brain Bolland's story). But the stories take about 5 minutes to read, and you probably won't find yourself engrossed in them like you did the first time. It's a great idea though, and the trade features some extras like art and blurbs about each of the writers and artists. However, the book isn't phenonimal, it's good (but unfortunately hampered by it's format). I could reccomend this to someone who wants to fill in a Batman collection for the sake of having one, but that's about it.

With all that said, I really do like this book. I'm not trying to put the book down, I'm just trying to put the book in perspective. I don't think it should get five stars or a must own reccomendation. This book should get priority over some Batman books, and even some other trades, but not top priority.

5 out of 5 stars A 5 star collection of black and white Batman stories........2000-01-18

Seeing the Dark Knight in black and white is what made me give this book 5 stars. The black and white artwork was awesome! I must admitt that the short stories were just average, however the artwork saved the short medicore stories.

Well worth the discounted price I paid for it from Bud Plant Comic Art. A solid 5 star read.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful collection of stories.......1999-07-11

This hardcover collects the excellent 4-issue miniseries from DC Comics. Contains short stories (some serious, some not) by some of the best writers and artists around, plus covers, sketches, gallery, tipped-in plate by Jim Steranko, and a cover image by Jeff Jones. The covers are on art board stock, giving it a very unique appearance. Also includes work by Corben, Simonson, McKeever, Timm, Kristiansen, Toth, Windsor-Smith, Ross, Stelfreeze... that should be enough to get your attention! The only problem I had with it was the brief appearance of Lobo in the Gaiman/Bisley story - can't stand that character.

This is a very useful book that enriches the art of black and white photography in a digital age.

    4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-03-15

I learned a few things reading this book, about infared photography and such, but a lot of what he writes about is more technical, I wanted some tips, ideas and maybe inspiration. I recommend it to anyone looking to go professional. He covers portraiture a lot, which is helpful since people can sometimes be very hard to photograph well! I love the mini photoshop tutorials placed randomly throughout the book, also. Pick this up! Look me up on on flickr, (lovedecember) =]

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book........2007-02-15

This book is great for teaching you about black & white photography. Gives you all the info you need to take the picture and how to manipulate in photoshop.

Black & White photography is really hot right now. But there is a right and wrong way of doing it. In this book Patrick Rice walks you through all that you need to know to produce AWESOME black & white images that your clients will LOVE.

    1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2006-12-07

This book lacked information on most of the things one would expect given the title, such as exposure response of digital cameras, contrast control, grain control, lighting, and digital manipulation. It contained a lot of images which often were not tied at all to the text, lacked captions, and were boring. Some of the images seemed to be examples of what not to do, but were not labeled as such, given one the impression that the author was proud of these crummy pictures he took. Two things that were covered in some detail were making ragged looking borders and infrared b/w photography - both gimmicks. In all, there wasn't a great amount of text and little to help the reader improve his photography.

5 out of 5 stars Great Pictures and Lots of Information.......2006-05-04

I found this book to have really great pictures and lots of useful information. In addition to the author's fine photography, the senior portrait work by Leonard Hill and the wedding work by Dennis Orchard weas just incredible.

The information on making a quality black and white digital photograph was well written and easy to understand. The extensive explanation of digital infrared photography was very informative as well.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone looking to become better at digital black and white photography.

It is worth the money if only to use the pictures as inspiration when photographing your next portrait or wedding client.

The main problem with this collection of tales from BATMAN: GOTHAM KNIGHTS is that many of the artists don't understand that drawing for B&W is different than for color. While these short stories exhibit more storytelling experimentation than most mainstream comics (and the lack of adherence to strict continuity is refreshing), the first two volumes are much better.

4 out of 5 stars A look at the real nuts and bolts..........2007-09-19

I've read several game design books, including Mike McShaffry's Game Coding Complete. While reading architecture and design is good and many of the books reflect the author's experience on several projects, Game Developer Postmortems provides the actual triumphs and stumbling blocks each game project went through.

A quick read and the best way to get insight into these projects without actually having worked on the teams, it's a book I'd recommend to anyone looking to understand game design projects.

5 out of 5 stars Experience, distilled, in a bottle........2007-08-20

Love this book. Each postmortem is full of advice about designing, producing, and shipping a video game - advice from the developers themselves - allowing YOU to learn from THEIR mistakes. Techincal gaffes, hiring snafus, political missteps, project management mistakes; anything that can go wrong in a software project HAS gone wrong in one of these stories.

When you get to the end of this book, you'll feel like a battle-hardened veteran that can take anything a project throws at you; and most of minefields mapped out are surpisingly appicable to ALL software development, not just video games.

Beware: this book may have you rummaging through discount bins to find the games mentioned- good or bad, you feel affection for a game once you've shared the trials and tribs of the creators.

5 out of 5 stars This Book has a Soul.......2007-02-10

A few books come my way which have a story, some technical relevance, and a soul. I read somewhere else (sorry, can't recall) that sometimes we don't find good books, they find us. This is a good book that found me. I like it. The style, the contents, the production, the concept - the 'soul'. If you are moving to that 'analog to digital' phase in your photographic life, buy this book. And see what develops.

3 out of 5 stars Should show 4 stars, This book will challenge your thinking.......2006-02-13

First off let me say that there should be 4 Stars up there and not 3, but it won't let me change it. This book is not a manual of how to do B/W photography in photoshop. Instead its about the options, and new roads that being able to do such things, creates. This should be required reading before anyone enters that tired old, digital vs. film debate. This book shows how digital is really just another tool to the photographer and how it can liberate the photographer and expand their horizons. It challenges you to think rather than opinionate and at the same time offers many good photos that might help inspire your own work.

1 out of 5 stars Very little "hands on" digital B&W photography.......2005-09-01

This book has very little actual information about producing digital black & white images. Mostly it's a discussion of the author's transition from film to digital, and the benefits/differences of digital. There isn't much actual information on Photoshop techniques and other means of producing digital B&W photos, and what there is is very basic and can be found in countless other books/magazine articles/web sites. As well, the photos are not very inspiring, and certainly do not illustrate anything specific to digital photography. A much better choice for an introduction to digital B&W photography is Barry Thornton's "Elements of Transition."

2 out of 5 stars The best of intentions but too rambling and not very clear.......2005-07-21

Despite my high hopes for this book and the fact that Mr. Epharums is a talented photographer and print maker, and I trust had the best of intentions, this book is just not very good. The approach the author takes is inconsistent and confusing: at times he's rambling when you want simplicity and clarity; at other times he's sparse when you're hoping for detail.

For starters, the sections covering how to work with Photoshop are not very clear. And the figures and much of the text are so painfully small that they're almost useless. This is especially obvious when he covers duotones. I like what he's achieved, but he doesn't give much to learn from.

In another part of the book he offers his "guiding principles," a series of one-liners that I assume are supposed to convey a Zen-like teaching about his approach. Instead they left me baffled. Consider the phrase "A precision of feeling." It sounds nice, but what does it mean, (speaking of precision)? Or the phrase "Let the accident participate" which is accompanied by photos of boats beached at low tide. Again I was baffled: does he mean an accident in something he did in taking the photo or in working on it in Photoshop, or did he mean the "accident" of the beached boats (which were beached on purpose)? Again, a nice Zen-like sentiment (and believe me, I can get down and cosmic with the best of them), but not useful in learning about photography or about digital black and white image-making.

This touches on the essence of what's wrong with this book. It is trying to be both a guide to digital black and white printmaking and at the same time, a book about Mr. Epharums' approach and philosophy to image-making. Not that this can't be pulled off, only that he doesn't do it in this book.

I think that this book could have worked, if the author had partnered with a good Photoshop teacher, and if he had worked with a compassionate but ruthless editor, to keep the book on track and the ramblings at bay, and if he was committed to clear examples of how to make these types of images. But that's a lot of if-ing on my part.

What redeems this book somewhat are the images: they are wonderful, and do give one inspiration as to what is possible with digital image-making; just don't look to this book to show you how.

    Regards, David

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but more philosophy than practice.......2005-07-01

I agree with the earlier reviewers. This is a very personal account of one man's transition from the traditional darkroom to digital. It concentrates on the effect of that change on the process of making black and white photographs. It is not a "how-to" manual, and, after some initial exploration of this transition myself, I don't agree with some of the author's statements about Photoshop and what he did and didn't find useful. A really good "how-to" is Amphoto's Guide to Digital Black and White Printing by Schaub.

    3 out of 5 stars I haven't even read it yet but..........2006-06-03

It's amazing, I've just read the reviews. First I came to Amazon searching for a graphic novel newly published by Kyle titled "Nat Turner". I couldn't find it but came across this particular novel. When i read the reviews I'm blown away, how ignorant and blind we really are. To abstract
    1. How dare Morales equivocate between unfortunate periods of American history such as Tuskegee (which stands out out as a particular abberation in the overall American character) and the unthinkable, almost infinitely EVIL Nazi concentration camps? "Truth" is a comic book, but the real life Nazi's were worse than any super-villain ever dreamed of being. It is impossible for the human mind to truly comprehend what happened there. Morales displays a total lack of understanding of what this country is about and he essentially gives the Nazi's a pass because from this story they're *not really any worse than we are*. Utter rubbish. And I say that as a black man who is painfully aware of what happened at Tuskegee.

    2. Captain America is a paragon, a perfect symbol of what America can (and maybe will eventually) be, much the same as Superman over at DC. It's escapes any rational sense to corrupt his origins, thus eroding the single thing that makes him more special than a hundred other costumed geeks.

    and
Truth - Red, White and Black must be understood in the context of the time it was written - during the buildup to the Iraq War. Marvel under Bill Jemas had published other books critical of the United States Military - including Marvel Knights Captain America, some Avengers storylines, some Punisher comics, and of course Jemas' neopacifist manifesto "411" (with only two of three issues of that comic published, not long before Jemas' departure from Marvel).

Prior to the invasion of Iraq some argued that the present war effort is every bit as important as the war against Nazism. Perhaps to undermine that neo-conservative moral argument, Truth - Red, White and Black presents the U.S. as little better than Nazi Germany - including the U.S. Military's roundup of Black GI's, the mass machine gunning of hundreds of these unarmed enlisted men, and the transport of the remaining victims to horrible human experimentation labs run by a sadistic racist doctor. All this done with the express approval of the President of the United States under the administration of viciously racist white officers and soldiers. The parallels to Nazi mass murder, transport of victims and the barbaric experiments conducted by Nazi Dr. Mengele are inescapable. These parallels are actually much stronger than the purported allusion to the Tuskegee Experiment.

and this though it doesn't spoil the ending for me as I can't figure out what he's expressing, the ending or a blend of reality and fiction:

So on to my biggest problem: the ending. As writer Robert Morales shows us, the creation of Captain America harbors a horrible secret. So how is it that Steve Rogers, THE Captain America, knew nothing about it when it's apparent that prominent figures such as Malcolm X, John Lennon, Alex Haley, Nelson Mandela, Muhammad Ali, Spike Lee, etc., were obviously VERY aware of the truth? Perhaps I'm misinterpreting the ending? It was very touching, but it makes no sense.

First this is a work of fiction, and history shows us that people of color in N.America have had historically very little to do with the writing of speculative ficiton and even when we have, it wasn't read by many of us (people of color and others). Check W.E.B. Dubois's Jesus Christ in Texas for a glimpse. Second comics historically have had great value in disseminating ignorance and fear amongst greater society. Superman is one of the most ignorant caricatures used to build up the imbalance of white male patriarchal affirmative action in this country. That may go over many of those who reads this heads. Third if we weren't allowed to express our opinions and give voice to how the characters were written and add the balance of our story (as people of color and citizens though still then 1/3 citizen on paper) to the development of Captain America, Superman, et.al, then if we have the ability to do so now...IT'S ABOUT DAMN TIME. How could Spike, Muhammad speak on something when they weren't even born then, and to think about it one would say that Langston, Zora, Dubois would have known about it (this secret), but remember it's fiction and its in the hands of it's creator's who at the times from 40's to still present don't think about us (people of color, women, so called minorities in this country but majority in the world) or even write us close to how we look in our 3-dimensional lives except if it's to make a quick dollar for the corporation. It's a comic but it spells great potential to push real valid ideas in the minds of the new generation who is so caught up on the newest level of brainwashing (leading many down the road of conditioned patriachy: war, perpetuating the military state, violence against self and others) by videogames which is no different now then comics then. One can see and experience themselves in a world of color and frame that moves as the player (then reader) progresses.

If issue was only about the artwork I wouldn't even write this but once I start reading, the same rhetoric I hear from people I study, work and live with about a subject that I've had 20 years of issue (Captain America) since reading comics about age 11 or so, I chose to leave my mark. Yes it is okay to hate America, it isn't about one unfortunate experience as one reviewer wrote but the entire history that this country is based on (genocide, mass murder, destruction of natural resources and massive earth life for greed and capital, slavery, rape, pillage, massive destruction and desired genocide of other cultures globally and the oppression of the feminine in every step taken since the first European {not indigeonous persons that we refer to as Vikings etc set} foot on this land, need I say more) and I pray we (the few that remember) can continue passing it forward so that at some point the disease that this country is and what it stands for and supports finally is vaccinated or/and burned out of this planet. Regarding the cat that has issue with the "Nazis not being any worse than we" well the Nazi's were supported by America's elite just as the Taliban was, just acknowledge the truth or read something more than comics dude, damn is it that difficult. Thus I'm greatly appreciative of this work though I've not read it yet and the Nat Turner work. Yes, I "may" have some issue with the story after reading it, but if it's (potential issue) as drastic as what (the reviews) I've read, which I can't possibly foresee, then well, I'll read before I write in the future.
Peace no more editing, I'm done

The parallels to Nazi mass murder, transport of victims and the barbaric experiments conducted by Nazi Dr. Mengele are inescapable. These parallels are actually much stronger than the purported allusion to the Tuskegee Experiment.

Tuskegee involved a U.S. Dept of Health "study" of men infected with untreated syphilis (surprisingly, sponsored by an African-American institution with the cooperation of some Black medical professionals). The subjects of the study were not infected with syphilis by the U.S. Government. However, as the study progressed and a cure was developed in the form of penicillin, this cure was denied these men, who were completely mislead. This was a horrible thing, and years later President Clinton apologized for it. However, if Morales wanted to draw a real analogy to Tuskegee he could have crafted a story with African-American volunteers to the super-soldier program, who were not told of the life-threatening risks involved in the experiments or even lied to. Instead Morales paints the U.S. Military and U.S. Government of WWII as morally equivalent to Nazi Germany.

The whole storyline besmirches what was once a wholly positive patriotic story of Captain America's origins. With a strong hate America message.

The comic book series in interesting as a sign of the times in which it was published, and the initial portrayals of the characters is good. For these reasons you may wish to add it to your collection. But when it falls into the rut of ugly polemics it falls flat on its face.

Look, I appreciate the talents of those involved here. Kyle Baker has drawn a lot of comics I'ven enjoyed over the years, particularly. But I can't approve of this story because of the above reasons, and I cannot recommend it.

    5 out of 5 stars Empowering.......2005-05-20

Many folks here just don't get it: the TRUTH about TRUTH is that its an allegory for the TRUTH that diasporan Africans in America have been both the innovators and the guinea pigs for and in America for some time now.

Given the extension of the COnstitutional franchise by things like Abolitionism and civil rights, not to mention the Tuskeegee experiements, it makes eminent sense that both the first test subjects were black, and that the first, best Captain America sprung from that heritage.

This work of storytelling is great, in every sense of the word; it rightly throws an art form sorely lacking in compelling stories of non-whites (even BLACK PANTHER - under Priest - is told from the perspective of the white male observer, however humourously!) that make sense.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it !!!!!!!.......2004-09-11

It's worth reading, just for the end of the book, the FACTS that this story was based on. Let's find out about the TRUTH !!! I don't really care about the comic book itself, it's what's behind the curtain that matters. We're not talking about a comic book, we're talking about History ! Read it and start to seek more infos about its subject, if you're not scared ...

    1 out of 5 stars useless .......2005-11-28

For the price of this book with a cd, it is absolutely not worth it. The images are scanned (very crappy job of scanning by the way). They ARE NOT vectors, they're flattened. You have to use a tracing tool yourself in the illustrator or photoshop. Images are very good though, but I would buy just the book without the cd.

1 out of 5 stars Book is cool - CD is worthless.......2005-11-28

The designs in this book are very interesting and useful but the images on the CD are jagged and the EPS files are NOT scalable. This is fine for aspiring designers but any professional will definately not be happy.
